A WORD FROM TOK DALANG Ever heard off the expression “the more you travel the more experience you gain” or at least something like that? Anyway, the point is that have you ever stop and look back at what you have done up until this point of your life and ask what have I gained from it? Did it make me better or worse? In short, the life you choose to thread has been a journey, a travel, from point A to point B (being your goal or death). And during this travel we make tough decisions that change our course of life, our identity. Sure some decision-making might turn out to be wrong, but it made us wiser and stronger nonetheless. Travelling in this sense is about the definition of self. Things that you do that defines you, as a person. If your life has been nothing but boring empty void and bleak, go out there and make a difference because you can (but not until you read this magazine first though). In conjunction of this month theme, I thought I write something deep (hence the introduction bit). Definition is really a wide subject, I would say, even I have problem to think of something to write for the magazine. However that seems not to be the case for the writers and columnists because they come up with really wonderful piece of work (bravo guys). I guess, theme like this attune people to be creative in a way. So readers go on, read, it’s prepared especially for you! This issue around we tried to do some improvement and hoped you like it. The crew has got a better picture of how to give the magazine a definition and made some changes accordingly (I’ll let you be the judge of that). Also not forgetting our dear contributors, Wayang Kulit thank you. We are humbled by your amazing works and expect the refreshing flow of ideas never stop. Lastly, I would like to invite the rest of you out there to send in any piece of work that you would like us to publish in Wayang Kulit to skin. film2011@gmail.com (come on don’t be shy). As always we are also opened to any suggestions and constructive feedbacks. Thank You. Yours faithfully, Elex Morpheous MAJOR GENERAL OF THE FIFTH UMANITAS LEGION

Japan’s Perilous Time As some of us might know, Japan has been struck with earthquake, tsunami and a nuclear contamination, a series of events of one leads to the other. It has been seven weeks now since the disaster happened. Indeed it is a trying time for Japan as the rest of the world watch, read and listen helplessly from the news able to do nothing. As aids flew in from all sorts of channel, the catastrophe victims’ pain and lost and hurt were comforted slightly. The road to recovery ahead will be a struggle for Japan but eventually and surely she will definitely walk again. The urban ballet

Win Chan

“It all started with some videos of Bboy Lilou (one of the famous bboy). When I first stepped into it, my hot blood is flowing when the tune “James Brown – Get on up” was played (I don’t know the song name when I was fresh, what I heard in the lyric is just “like a sex machine” :-D). My body rocked to the beat. From that moment, I know this is the thing I want to do for my life.” ~Stitch~ The slang “bboys or bgirls” in a commercial perspectives, is often known as breakdancers. Why would it known as breakdancer? Why break? From a hilarious youtube clip that I had watched, Doug Curlee, a reporter, said on a news report back in the 80s’, “It’s called breakdancing... I think I can understand while watching it, it is entirely possible that something might have been broken in it when doing this, or at least seriously dislocate it.” (from the clip 80’s Footage of Breaking in Harbison Canyon, San Diego). As bboys no one would deny this fact that they sometime get injuries when they dance. However, the word “break” don’t have the connotation of dangerous, the “break” is defined as the break of the record which is the instrumental section or interlude during a song. But, how the dance got started?

The History Here is a very brief history about bboying. (I guess I don’t have to write a long history because you can get it on google search anytime, it will be the same thing) Bboy is one of the four elements in hip hop culture. The four elements are ‘rap’, ‘graffiti’, ‘bboy’, and ‘dj-ing’. The sub-culture movement originate from Bronx, New York City. The term “B-boy” or “B-boying” was created by Kool Herc who was a DJ spinning at block parties in Bronx back in the days. B-Boys means break boys and they were called so because they dance to the break part of music. Later, by repeating this break part done by the DJ, “breakbeats” was born.

However, it was not until late 60s or early 70s when people started a sort of b-boying. Their dancing was called “Good Foot” from James Brown’s record of the same name. The Good Foot was the first freestyle dance that incorporated moves involving drops and spins, and resembled the beginnings of breaking. After that, the culture was brought to another level by a dedicated youth who trained hours and hours a day, later known as Rock Steady Crew. They became the pioneer of bboying. At the same time, a few crews were born along with Rock Steady Crew. As a result, the culture movement became stronger and it spreads around the world. *****James Brown – The Good Foot*****

The Brain Behind The Dance. Just like any dance, Bboy has its foundations and basics. It consists of top or up rock, footwork, spinning moves (power moves), and freezes. For me, a bboy is not a just a person that able to spin their body or stand in a upside down position. But one has to equip with top rock, footworks and freezes plus personal flavors, power and dynamic to express themselves along with the music. On top of that, Bboying is a dance style which is very unique to individual where different people has different style. Some people might be full with funky and groovy top rock or footwork, some might be dynamic with the spinning power moves and some will have intricate flexible freezes or movement.

I realised one unique part of bboy is we never dance to look like somebody. We dance to define ourselves. Although everyone learns the same foundation moves like top rock, six steps, baby freeze and windmill, later ones will based on the foundation moves to explore the way their body works. The individual is freely and creatively develop the personal flavour and moves through the concept of rhythm, space, complexity, balance and pattern.

Dancing is an imaginative story telling with our body movement. We usually start our story with top rock, footwork, spinning moves and end with a freeze. Usually the freezes expressed full stop or question mark in a sentence. Bboys express their story in a circle whether is a cypher or battle. Basically, cypher is a open circle where bboys step in one by one to do their styles. On the other hand, battle circle is the coliseum where the bboys are like warriors/ fighters battle for their title. A battle usually involves one on one or crew versus crew. When the dance battle is going on, it is like a question and answer session where your opponent set a theme and question with his or her set, then you have to answer the set to express that your set is funkier, more stylish or dynamic than him/her.

I would like to say, the pumping beat from my heart inside my ribcage, it tells me to be the one that I want to be. I always improve my skills with practice and more practice, at some point I realised lots of it comes naturally as I listen to the beat. I am making it looks easy. I am making the moves from hard to easy, while adding up my bruises layers by layers and tearing up my muscles pieces by pieces. I know it made me stronger from day to day. I went from Lilwin to Stitch, a stronger burning hot blood from my heart flows the passion to be the one I want, without fear. In the circle, I am myself, I am bboy.

Have you ever find the need to be inspired?Well, you are in luck for here at Wayang Kulit™, we publish some of the best work of poetry for yours truly!

Her feet were throbbing, aching from the long walk and wandering, her journey was a perilous and lonely one, on the plane of wealth and glory, happiness is all she wants. Her bones battered and frail, broken from the so many times she fell, the pains and tribulations that follow her fragile body, most could not even spell. Her worn out eyes, are barely open, Yet her desire were not to keep them shut, in a dark tunnel now she walks, with aching feet and broken bones, with tired eyes still open wide, because she is sick of falling, sick of wandering, her eyes were fixed, staring... eyeing for the light at the end of the deep, black tunnel, where she believes, a greener pasture, a brighter sun, and a clearer sky, were always there, always welcoming. -For those who fall but still keep standingFeeling inspired already? DEFINE YOURSELF WITH STYLE AND FASHION! Both fierce and mysterious, a contrast for flowery and sunny spring but fabulous for the opening of this season, introducing FATIN ZAKARIA! Black is authoritative and powerful; because black can evoke strong emotions, too much can be overwhelming. Black represents a lack of color, the primordial void, emptiness. It is a classic color for clothing, possibly because it makes the wearer appear thinner and more sophisticated.

Pictured here wearing her own black jumpsuit with gold neck embellishment

HOW THE COLOR BLACK AFFECTS US PHYSICALLY Makes one feel inconspicuous Provides a restful emptiness Is mysterious by evoking a sense of potential and possibility

Inspired by famous hijab fashionista, Hana Tajima

FATIN’S PERSONAL FAVOURITES THAT DEFINE HERSELF:

• Chanel Coco Mademoiselle eau de parfum • A watch by D&G • Ralph Lauren’s polos and shirts • Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger jeans collection • A pair of Dolce & Gabbana shoes • Handbags!!

P.S: She is currently addicted to Baby Johnson talcum powder and L’oreal lip gloss!

Transform herself to fun and chic look for playing in the sun

A pair of killer heels, a must-have for a woman. Black Oxford Booties, a distinct choice of footwear for sunny spring, creates a great fashion statement

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT BLACK • • • • • • •

A black cat crossing one’s path is considered bad luck in many cultures, except in England, where spotting a black cat is considered good luck. Black implies weight -- people will think a black box weighs more than a white one. The color black is associated with sophistication and power...tuxedos, limousines, judge’s robes, and priests’ attire are all typically black. Musicians in an orchestra pit often wear all black during live concerts, so as not to draw attention away from the stage performers. The color black is so widely regarded as sophisticated in fashion that the term “the new black” is often used to describe and give merit to a color trend. One old wives’ tale claims that if a woman is buried wearing the color black, she’ll come back to haunt the family. Dr. Jigor Kano, founder of Judo, created divisions among students using Belt colors, in order to give students recognition for certain achievements. The Black Belt is the highest color belt in most martial arts, including ITF and WTF of Tae Kwon Do. Black symbolizes the combination of all colors of the universe. From black, all colors originate and spring up to create the lively rainbow. The Black Belt is the beginning of true achievement, understanding and wisdom, and blending the mind and the body into one, into a unity within oneself and with the universe.

Define yourself with a sporty lifestyle this spring!

(Especially for girls)

This month we featured two dedicated women in two different activities to keep them healthy and fit this season. Zayanah Asmadi shared with us her secret and we got a chance to sneak a quick look into her gym bag!

Exercise in Zayanah’s P.O.V Working out is not just being slim or losing some weight. I love to feel healthy, confident with myself and exercise help to produce endorphins which help me to release my stress. I feel driven, tough and motivated in the gym. Why not be hardcore and sexy at the same time!

What’s in her gym bag? Workout journal It is how I keep myself on track

Enjoying the sun by cycling!

Trainers Invest your money in a pair of shoes that fit right and comfortable A bottle of water Important to keep me hydrated. Some people will choose Gatorade, but just a bottle of mineral water will do for me. IPod touch A must have! If I left it at home, I would turn right back around and get it. It’s impossible to work out without the right music! Towel You surely need one to wipe your sweat! I choose a black towel because I hate to see the dirt from my sweat. Don’t forget to wash it! Lock The most important thing to have! (To lock your locker, of course) Pads You’ll never know when you need it. Keep 1 or 2 in your bag for emergency. (Ladies, alert!)

Light snack A banana or granola bar, not a pack of Nasi Goreng!

While Zayanah keeps herself sweating and healthy in the gym, Nurul Nordin shares with us a fun and splashy interview! Always laughing and smiling, no other words can define this tall lady but bubbly and passionate. Let’s follow her journey with this watery sport for this sunny spring.

“...tall lady but bubbly and passionate”

How did you first start swimming? I’d never been to any swimming pool when I was young, but I always been to my kampong’s river (smiling). I’d been introduced to this kind of sport when I was in IPDA. But still I didn’t know how to swim at that time! In Portsmouth, I’ve been swimming since last year at Charter Academy. I attended only two sessions of swimming class and then I stopped swimming due to my busy lifestyle as a student. Wow! (Laughing). But, this year I’ve a swimming membership. I can go swimming every day! Why swimming as your hobby? Just want to have some fun, at the same time I can maintain a good health and be fit, even though I’m skinny (laughing). What motivates you to go swimming? I really enjoy swimming and based on my readings, I should do some workouts in order to build my body size. Swimming is a good activity for both people who want to burn fats and people who want to build muscle and size as it involves a lot of muscles movements. What is the best thing about swimming? Once you’re finished swimming, you’ll feel very fresh even though your body will hurt somewhere (laughing). I’ve fun with my ladies too! What is your best achievement so far?

This is her definition of everyday handbag to keep her on the go. P.S: Spot two mentos

I feel glad with my achievements right now because I am able to swim with any kind of swimming styles. From human, I’ve become frog, puppy and butterfly! Not only that, I’m coaching my ladies now (smiling). Any tips for beginners? Hardly try to imagine that you’re in an emergency situation where there is no one there for you and you need to swim or else you’ll die. So, you’ll try your best to make yourself float. It’s more like swim like a puppy! The most important bag after getting out from the pool, to keep yourself clean and fresh!

HOW THE WORLD KILLED SUPERMAN

Unbalanced Phenomena

“It’s a bird, it’s a plane... IT’S ... Superman is a fiction fantasy story created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1932. The main plot of the story revolves around a super extraterrestrial being, Kal-El (Superman), as he fights for justice and righteousness. Unlike most of other iconic superheroes, Superman is portrayed as the Omni-being. He was without flaws—as far as the story goes. He has good relationship with the people, public, and even the law enforcer; unlike some superheroes like Spiderman or Batman. Being a talented journalist, Superman fights with both might and intelligence to overcome his opponent—whilst some other superheroes prefer the “Hulk smash!!!” method. Some superheroes like Batman or the “Trigger Happy” Punisher uses darker elements for their main motivation (Such as revenge or total annihilation of an opposing faction), Superman treads the pure path of a true justice seeker. He helps those in need just because! In all seriousness, Superman is, was, and will always be the Ultimate being, bathe in all its glory and power— or so we thought! Far from being a creature from this world, Superman was still created and envisioned by mere humans. This means that however powerful a being Superman could ever be, he is still limited by the imagination of a man. And being the miserable creature that we are, mankind will always enjoy conflicts of others. Don’t lie to yourself. If you are shaking your head while reading this, you should stop. When I say enjoy, I don’t really mean laughing out loud and clapping your hand when you see a car accident. I meant it more like an inherited instinct that we man and women could not chip out even after two millennium of evolution; or revolution for any cause. What I am trying to say is, in every story of any living creature, there has got to be a “Conflict”. And that is what killed Superman!

“Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound” -Jay Morton, 1940. Above is a catchphrase that was used during the introduction of Superman. It is portrayed that Superman is as powerful as a train, faster than a bullet and can jump higher than a tall building. Now these features are, within the period of introduction of Superman, quite extraordinary features for one superhero to have. Most superheroes only have like one or two special ability, but Superman is not “Most” superheroes. He is unique, in a sense that he is almost perfect, untouchable! However, it is within these astonishing special features that causes the downfall of Superman. How come? Why ? Well, it mainly revolves around us being human actually. From the earlier points, human enjoy conflicts! And what possible conflict could ever befall such perfect being like Superman? It is a reality—one we should not be ashamed of actually. If we remember carefully, all the great story; romance, action or even comedy, would have some sort of tragedy or some sort! Romeo and Juliet, Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Terminator or even comedy filled old school stories such as the “Bujang Lapok” series! Hence, it is by this sense of justification, that we human beings tried countless times to murder Superman! All in the name of an “Interesting Story”!

How? It is not a matter of how we tried to kill Superman. It is only by the need of us killing him that made it possible to kill Superman! Really! I mean, it was “decent” enough for the creator to make up a fictional weakness for him, the Kryptonite; a form of crystals which emits a poisonous radiation which weakens and eventually kill Superman. It is kind of cliché nowadays, but since Superman is a fictional being; it is rather fitting for him to have a fictional weakness. However! If we think about it clearly, it was lucky enough for Superman to have landed successfully on earth, travelling millions of light years away. There could be plenty of possible obstacle which could cause Kal-El to fail to reach earth—like the spaceship crashed on other planet, or came across a meteor shower, or simply the spaceship ran out of power/ fuel (That has actually happen to me !). Now take that into calculation, and imagine the pos-

sibility of “Kryptonite” successfully arriving here, on earth? Pretty slim right? But in Superman Return (2006), all Lex Luthor got to do is march in the nearest museum for space rocks, and viola! One Kryptonite ready to go! It is as if the author himself was trying to say that if you really want to kill Superman, all you got to do is rob a pretty defenceless museum! I am not putting the blame on anyone, seriously. A story without a bad guy is pretty weak and dull. And Superman deserve better than to just appear in a dull story where he just flew in, stomp the bad guys, and flew out. This is not a Chuck Norris movie nor is it a Steven Segal DVD/Blue ray TV show. This is Superman! What really matters here is how mankind—no, how the world that Superman fought day in and day out to protect would be the cause of his death. THE BLIND SHALL SEE THE DEAF SHALL HEAR

Growing up... “Growing up is such a barbarous business, full of inconvenience... and pimples” ~Captain Hook~ At the age of 3, my family means the most to me. Everything they do is right in my eyes and I will try my best to imitate the things they do and say. Such great influence they have on me without them even realising. To me then, family simply means Father And Mother I Love You (FAMILY). Things changed when I started school at age 5. The teachers were always right. Once, when I was finishing up my homework, my dad commented that I should have done my calculations another way which is much easier. Instead of believing what my dad told me, I told him this “But teacher told us to do it this way”. Looking back, I am not sure if I followed what the teacher said out of fear or out of respect. Somehow, teachers have taken over the importance of parents. So much so that when I play with my younger brother, we would play teacher and student. I was always the teacher and him the student. I would boss him around and gave him some writing to do. Sometimes, I made him do too much that he would cry and go running to my parents saying that I bullied him. I wondered what I have taught him as a “teacher” since I was only older than him by two years. Perhaps, it is like the blind leading the blind.

Then come the rebellious years which parents dread going through when their children reach their teenage years. I was rebellious, no doubt about that, but it was nothing to the extreme. Everything my parents advised me to do would just end with me doing the complete opposite. If they asked me not to do that, I would do it on purpose just to irritate them. Yes, it is just to annoy them for telling me what to do. I guess it is the freedom to make my own decision that makes me a rebel. But sadly, I do not always succeed in being one. Once, I asked permission to go somewhere with my friends but they insisted that I should not go. I argued with them and was so angry that I was at the losing end. My friends enjoyed themselves while I was in my room brooding over the event. It is only now that I came to realise why my parents refused to let me go. It was dangerous and they were just trying to protect me from harm. Back then, I saw them trying to control my life rather than of their concern.

Now in my twenties, I am no longer a rebel (or so I hope). Being away from home for studies has in fact taught me to grow more mature emotionally. I know that for sure considering that I can now give my thoughts in my parents’ lives and my opinions are taken seriously. It sometimes scares me to realise how much I have grown without even noticing the process. From a child who knows nothing to a rebellious teen and now to a young adult. But, no matter how old I am, I would always still be a little girl to my parents. Miles away from home also made me realised the things I have taken for granted. At home, breakfast would be ready on the table before I go to school. Now, I have to prepare my own breakfast and if I were to wake up late, my poor stomach would be drumming an embarrassing tune in class. I grow to appreciate little things like that when I go back for my holidays. From what I see with the people around me, one thing never changes is how you tell people your age as you grow. Age 6: When the number of your age is still a single digit, you will proudly tell people this “I am six and a half and I will be seven soon”. Every day and month counts as you are excited to get older. Age 16: “I am sixteen. I can’t wait to be twenty-one. I can have my freedom then”. A teen can never be any more obvious in expressing their desire to get away from home. Age 36: “I am only thirty plus”. As the number gets bigger, you tend to give a rough idea of what your age is. An exact number is hard to get. Age 56 and above: “I will always be 16. Young at heart”. Real age is concealed forever.

SELFHELP BEING A CONTENDER IN IN THE RING OF EDUCATION

Aiman

The word ‘definition’ carries different interpretations by different people as they may view it differently from others. In the education context, it does not matter how you define the entity of about the subject, as long as you respect others’ views on it. However, some people claim that we need to achieve good grades or even straight A’s in whatever subjects which we have chosen to do. To a certain extent, there is no point of providing such definition because there are tons of different definitions by thousands of scholars throughout the world for that particular field. In fact, it is better to keep it simple and to make sure that the knowledge mastery is up to the level which we are supposed to be. Nowadays, it is very interesting to see people with little knowledge yet claiming to know the whole world. There is no need to be like ‘Si Luncai’ who always sitting on the cloud nine and come out with all sorts of imagination. In the 21st century, the scope of the definition should be tackled from a mature perspective because people are getting smarter days by days and taking the world context into their account.

Furthermore, it is better to remind ourselves of who we are and asked what we have achieved so far. The present world has demanded their people to be educated and knowledgeable in all kinds of aspects with the mastery of living skills. This shows that educational field has gone under a rapid development and as the member of the world, we should respond to it. Globalisation provides the best opportunity for us to be on the same par with others and people have to have a strong enthusiasm in showing what are they capable of. People should not hide under their ‘tempurung’ and captivate themselves in their imaginative world. There are a lot of things to be discovered, new journeys to be made and new rivals to be met. That is how we should define the current educational world and being sensible to ourselves as there are massive competitors out there who are coming to beat us. Therefore, grab this opportunity to be one of the best contenders in the world fills with challenges, so that we will not lose anything and being regretful in the future.

Dining with Hercules Define the food you eat You really can define oneself by noticing the food one person eat every day. If we assume a person who is a vegetarian, we assume he or she is skinny petite and short. They probably love animal too much, or too scared to eat them (or just bound by the restriction of their religion). If a person, who loves their protein very much, I mean eat a LOT of meat, and sometimes accompany that with a lot of carbohydrate and sweets to end the meal (let’s give this person who eat this diet a name... say Mr. A.), please do not call this person a meat-head but more of a meat lover. And to satisfy a meat lover, the best meal is to feed this person, with the all-time British favorite Donner Kebab. History of “Kebab”

Donner Kebab in Portsmouth Portsmouth is a multicultural city. So to embrace with various cultures, why not indulge yourself with some meaty delight from the Middle East instead of the greasy-salty-yucky-uncreative-pub food. Donner Kebab can be located almost everywhere in Portsmouth and most of these shops open till 3am. No wonder the Brits ate these after they have too much to drink. And don’t worry, most of the Donner kebab here are ‘halal’. The Donner Kebab in Portsmouth has mostly 2 types: Chicken or Meat (it’s a mixture of Beef, and Lamb) Did you know? Donner Kebab originated from Greece. NOT Arab. Dated back into the BC era, the Greek empire spread throughout the Mediterranean, Italy and also the Middle East. It introduced the spit roasting cooking style and spread across its conquered nations. After a while, Greece lost all of its power and “fabled religion” (all thanks to a certain powerful dude miraculously born to this world), the Rome take over Greece and lost all of its land. However, their recipe of spit-roasting (that is the technique used) survived all the way to the new era. In Greece, they called in “Pita Gyros” or in Greek “Soulvaki”. Another interesting fact: The most traditional Soulvaki is Pork. So that’s why the Arabs has a different name for it (how do I know that...lets just I’ve been to certain places). How good is it? Looking at those oil dripping off the spinning wheel of Protein, it is not the healthiest food around. The Donner Kebab served in most shops, you may have notice the remaining fat collected in the bottom of the box. So health wise, it is not good at all. But the taste is something else. If combined with the perfect mixture of salad, pita bread and sauce, some may make miracles. The best sauce to taste it is the local homemade Chili sauce. It really can bring out the flavour.

Donner Kebab vs Kebab Let me clear some things else: Donner Kebab is NOT Kebab. Donner Kebab is that big lump of meat hanging on a vertical-standing-oven-looking-device. While Kebab is the oversize satay made out from big chunks of meat. Price wise Kebab is a lot more expensive than Donner Kebab, but it taste meatier. I, on the other hand, find it less in volume. Kebab is just not the right price for me (delicious but not the right price).

Review of the famous Donner Kebab shops around Portsmouth: Kens Kebab (located in Guildhall Walk) Rate: 1 out of 5 stars For many people, Ken’s location is perfect to get a quick bite between classes. For me, it is the worst Kebab found in Portsmouth. The meat is always served cold (Or that is what I usually get), the sauce is horrendous, the pita bread is chewy (Urgh...). But plus point for the “Buy one get one free” offer (use that offer wisely). The meat is actually fine if you heat it up. My advice if you want to buy it; Get the coupon, buy the two kebabs, go back home, use a spoon, get rid of the salad, pour the kebab into a pan, lightly fry it, serve with your own rice or noodle. Taste WAY much better.

Efes Kebab (Located in Fratton road) Rate: 4 out of 5 stars I would have to say hands down, Efes Kebab made the best CHILLI sauce for the kebab. The meat was good. (At least a lot better than Ken’s recipe) But you gotta admit I have never tasted that great combo of the chilli with the meat. Together with some salad, you got yourself a great Donner Kebab. The only complaint I have to say is the oil level. I think they put a little too much oil into their exquisite Kebab. I don’t mind it much, but some of you “Healthy minded people” might think it is super gross. My advice: Ask the manager to cut a new fresh bunch of Kebab. It will have less oil.

Kingdom Kebab (Fratton road) Rate: 4 out of 5 stars Kingdom is the next best thing after Efes. While Efes has the best sauce, I would say Kingdom has the best MEAT!!! In this particular shop, the owner always lightly fry the meat to enhance the meaty taste. I have never tasted such brilliance. One fatal down point: Bad Chilli sauce. I don’t know how they mix it, but their Chili is AWFUL. However, if you notice clearly, there are very less excess oil in the Kebab. So I think it is the Healthiest along the list. My advice: If you are not a die-hard Chilli fan, mix the Kebab with other sauce like garlic sauce or Mayo. Don’t put the Chili. If you are a Chili lover and your face is thick enough. Buy the Kebab from Kingdom without any sauce, then walk to the opposite side at Efes and ask for some their Homemade Chilli Sauce. (Joke aside, I really want to do this one day)

Turkish Kebab (Fratton... I LIVE THERE OKAY?!!!) Rate: 4 out of 5 stars I only eat this once and I remember the succulent taste of that particular Chicken Donner Kebab. I think it is just right. It does not have the best sauce, nor does it has the best taste o the meat, but it is very close to perfect.

Pengat Pisang a.k.a

Banana

in sweet sauce

Nurshakeilla Natra Mohd Najib.

Pengat Pisang is different in North & South Peninsula Malaysia. The ‘name’ is the same, but you will find Pengat Pisang in Kedah; for instance, is different from Pengat Pisang in Johore. Why is it so? Well, I don’t have the answer. My version of Pengat Pisang is the South Peninsula’s version- with sauce. I must say that this is the simplified recipe from my father’s. Anyways, thanks to my beloved father (who is a retired chef). He who instils the passion & encourages me to sharpen my skills in cooking until today (Yay for ayah!). Full credits to Ayah (lucky ayah won’t mind I made little changes in his recipe..hihi). Okay, let’s get started!

Ingredients: 3 or 4 glass of fresh full/ semi-skimmed milk. No plain water needed. 1 and a half cup of sugar (granulated sugar/ brown sugar). 5 large & firm bananas (thickly sliced). 3 table spoon of sago . 1 pandan leaf . A small tea-spoon of banana essence (just for the sweet smell-optional).

How to cook: a) First, clean the sago (you can soak it in water for a minute or so). Boil it until you see the seeds somehow look translucent & float on the water’s surface. Usually, it takes about 3 minutes to be ready on top of medium fire. Rinse and put it aside. b) Wash the pandan leaf. Cut it in the middle and make two knots out of it. Put them aside. c) Get your wok ( I know. I’m a typical Chinese who loves to use wok to cook everything). Turn the heat low and pour the milk. Add the sugar. Let it simmer for about three minutes. Stir occasionally. Do ensure to stir it frequently if you want to use medium heat. d) Pour the sago into your wok. Stir and add the pandan knots. Change into medium heat and stir. e) Put a small tea spoon of banana essence (optional). Stir it for about two minutes in low heat. Turn off the heat. Let it be for about 3 minutes.

f) Slice the bananas. Put it into the wok. Stir gently. The heat inside the sauce will help the bananas to cook nicely and soft. Banana will turn brown and mushy if you put it into the liquid when it is still pip ing hot. We don’t want to eat mushy bananas, aren’t we? g) Your pengat pisang is ready. Serve it warm.

Notes: -I prefer fresh milk than coconut milk because it is healthier. If you want to use coconut milk, that would be fine. But do remember to put 1 cup of water for 2 cups of coconut milk. It really depends on how thick you want it to be. -Also, it is better if you use brown sugar. Brown sugar is rich in taste than ordinary sugar. The measurement depends on you because some people love sweet things. -Sago which is also known as biji sagu in Malay can be found in Asian market. I found green-coloured sago in Medi. Be creative in your cooking. Mixing different colours of sago would be fun- but don’t overdo it okay. Thank you. Bon appétit! ^_^ Be your own master chef and send us your secret resipe! Chicken Mortadella and Grilled Tomato Macaroni Wong Sze Ling

I was thinking about trying out at least one new recipe every weekend. I have lots of food magazine and recipe books lying around waiting for me to explore. Since all the assignments have been submitted, there really is nothing stopping me from cooking, unless you count in the $$$ needed to buy ingredients. So, this week’s recipe is adapted from Tesco Magazine (November-December 2009). I have substituted all the non-halal ingredients with halal ones and the taste is still marvellous! Who says halal food is difficult to come by? With a little tweaking here and there, plus the rezeki from the All-Mighty, even a Muslim can enjoy delicious Western cuisine!

HOT FROM THE OVEN! THE CHEESE IS STILL BUBBLING AWAY!

Ingredients:

tuck in immediately while it’s still hot!

Some Grated cheese is a must!

350g chicken mortadella (the halal ones from Asian grocers) 350g fussilli (or any types of pasta) 250g frozen sweetcorn 900ml semi-skimmed milk 1 chicken stock cube 4 tbsp cornflour mixed to a paste with 3 tbsp water 1 tsp mustard 100g grated cheese (I used parmesan) 3 tomatoes, sliced (or more in order to cover the top of the dish)

Methods:

1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 6 and bake the chicken mortadella for 6 minutes until browned. Cut into pieces. Cook the pasta and add the sweetcorn 2 minutes before the end of cooking. 2. Heat the milk in a saucepan with a stock cube and gently simmer. Add corn flour paste and mustard. Continue to heat until thickened. Remove from heat and whisk in the grated cheese. 3. To assemble, drain the pasta and sweetcorn, add to the cheese sauce with the chicken mortadella. Tip into a large ovenproof dish and top with the fresh tomatoes. Return to the oven to bake for 20 minutes until bubbling and golden. Enjoy!
