EDITORIAL

So this is the first ever issue of Daily MM News Magazine. Well, it cannot be classified as a magazine, rather it is most suitable to describe this magazine as a fanzine. What is a fanzine? It is a blend between magazine and fans. Not to play Captain Obvious, but we are fans of the Mannin Mainthargal scene or also known as the Malaysian Tamil Scene. Being this is the first issue, it is only apt for us to say who we are. To start off we are not professionals and we do this purely for passion and fun. Thus, at times, you will find this fanzine rather amateurish, so please be patient with us and pardon us for our lack of professionalism in both design and content. Nonetheless, you have our word, we will do our best to make it visually appealing and interesting. Nonetheless, as a reminder, we are not professional designers or professional writers. So, if you like what we do, do drop us a comment. So what can you expect from this fanzine? Well, you can expect a compilation of releases during the month, a number of articles and events. Basically, what we do is compile stuff what Malaysian Indians artist have released over the past months and write about it. Due to our poor networking skills, we are only able to provide information which is public and our main sources are Facebook and Twitter. Thus, expect plenty of information gap in this fanzine. Nonetheless, we will do our best to give you the best updates about our MM scene. We aim to make this fanzine a monthly publication, however, due to our commitments, we might miss a couple. Besides, there are only three to four of us working on this. Thus, if you would like to join us and help out by writing articles, designing or anything, but done voluntarily, as we do not earn, drop us an email at:

Syndicates’s long awaited mixtape is finally dropping on December 2012. The title of the mixtape, ‘CantekMachaBunga: The Mixtape’, which is eye-catching and unique, suggests this album is likely to be different from their previous work. The announcement of their mixtape came in the form of their first singles release, called Women Lie Men Lie, by Kaydee (one part of Syndicate) featuring Sheezay and Rabbit. Mac of Psycho. Unit.

GEARINGUPFOR SYNDICATE’S

CHANTEK MACHA BUNGA: THE MIXTAPE While, the focus is on Kay Dee, do not forget Pirate, who is set to release his track with Tiban of Acoustical Recordz called Ennamo Achi, a fun, uplifting love track.

For those who do not know who is Syndicate, here is a re-fresher course. Syndicate, which was formed in Seremban, consists of the amazing duo - Pirate and Kay Dee (used to be known as Haan Jay). Their musical style ranges primarily from hip hop, rap and R&B, but they also tend to experiment with a range of music, which is evident through the hit track Inthe Ulagam (under Dhesam 7). Syndicate’s history in the Mannin Mainthargal scene can be dated back in 2010, with their hit single, ‘Oru Nodi (Oru Nodiyil Kathal)’, which immediately caught the attention of many people. Then known as Dhesam 7 - Jamez Raj, Pirate and Haan Jay, they gained

JUNE 2012 /

instant recognition through this breakthrough track and everyone was forced to take serious note of these talented trio. This eventually gave birth to Syndicate, which consists the duo Pirate and Haan Jay. Syndicate’s formal entrance in the local music industry is through their debut album titled ‘Chackram and Syndicate’, which was a collaborative effort between Syndicate, then signed under Culture Shock Records, and Chackram Production. The album was released on 12th February 2011 to positive reviews. Syndicate did three songs for the album which are Marainthirunthe featuring Crank K.S., Thaali Ready...! and Club’kulle Syndicate featuring Psychomantra. Both Marainthirunthe and Thali Ready...! were considered successful, further enhancing Syndicate’s reputation as an exciting new talent which needs to be recognized. After the release of their debut

album, Syndicate forged old alliances by signing under Dhesam 7 Records (now operating as a recording label). Upon signing under Dhesam 7, Syndicate has been focusing on developing their sound and style, thus only releasing a couple of tracks, namely the infectious Inthe Ulagam and Mayiley and featuring another which is Saamekozhi (a track by Biz’ Eshwa). Nonetheless, all the tracks have achieved good success and Syndicate has redefined their sound with maturity and poise. Thus, their latest mixtape, CantekMachaBunga is likely to be the mixtape which firmly places Syndicate in the Mannin Mainthargal map and with Psycho. Unit collaborating in Kay Dee’s track Women Lie Men Lie, this mixtape will not disappoint.

DEFTMAN

THE TAMIL RAP SUPERGROUP M.V.P, also known as Most Valuable Playaz, is a supergroup consisting of JB-Singapore Tamil artists. The supergroup was initiated in June 2011 with fifteen artists collaborating for their first self-titled singles. The first M.V.P track was composed by Switch and it featured Lil P, Tony J, Big Vitz, DJ Sathiya, Killawill, DJ Funky Sara, Hustler, Yaso, Mista Tee, Sai Prashanth, Vish-1, Vikadakavi, Silvestar, Mr.5K and Switch himself. The monster track lasts a full eight minutes with solid Tamil poetry and catchy English verses.

The second M.V.P track was released on November 2011 titled Ponnambalam. Produced by Mr.5K and Switch and composed by Switch, Ponnambalam featured Tony J, Big Vitz, Vish-1, V-Sha and both Switch and Mr.5K themselves. Switch’s landmark electro style is evident in this track and it is one of his better produced tracks. The third and latest M.V.P track, Party Zone, saw No Name Recordz’s main man Sai Prashanth assuming the role of the music producer. This track saw El Hustler, Stylerz Madhan, Killawill, Deftman, Vikadakavi joining hands with Sai Prashanth to deliver M.V.P’s finest track and it was released on March 2012. Deftman’s raga chorus dominated the track by giving the ‘party’ feel with El Hustler, Stylerz Madhan, Killawill and Sai Prashanth doing what they do best. Vikadakavi, the bombastic rapper, brought the track to a whole new level. So, this June 2012 will mark the 1 year anniversary of M.V.P and the track Lai Loo is set to be released. So let’s see what is in store.

The Passionate

Rasta m an

If you looking for some dancehall or reggae vibes, look no further, Deftman is the answer. The passionate rastaman was featured in a track called Nachhangi which was featured in Goldkartz’s second album 24 Karaatz which was released in 2011. The track was produced by Goldkartz and it features Ranjit Gill and Deftman. The focus of this post will be on Deftman, the rastaman.

Indeed, not many Mannin Mainthargals do reggae, thus Deftman is a handful of those who do rasta/reggae/riddim. This track, Nachhangi, sees Deftman performing bhangra riddim, a true fusion of music. Deftman is one of the unique talents coming out from Malaysia and he deserves the recognition. Prior being a solo artist, he was part of Tribe 3, a local act which participated in Blast Off 2 and Gang Starz. Deftman is currently signed with No Name Recordz, a record label based in Johor.

Deftman is set to release his solo album in 2013 titled The Rise of The Original Rasta-Mizhan tentatively.

10 MUSIC VIDEOS AWESOME

2011, was the year of music videos for the Mannin Mainthargal scene, after years of producing music videos which lack quality, 2011 can be considered as a revolution in the scene. Hence, I have compiled the top ten videos from 2011 up to February 2012 according to my personal viewpoint and also considering the amount of Youtube views. Firstly, selecting a top 10 music videos for the Mannin Mainthargal scene is no easy task. That’s why I have selected these music videos based on its credential and trying my best not to be bias or favouring anyone in particular. So, without further ado, DMM News presents to you, the Top Ten Music Video (from 2011 to Feb 2012).

10. Legend Mathan - Selai

10

Best bits

The models, the lighting, the settings, first-class editing by Mohamed Hilmi Hanifa, the beautiful Reenetha, Hanida and Legend’s expression.

Verdict

One of the top class music videos produced, the only disappointment is the feet shot from 2.04 to 2.13. Additionally, it is also rare to see movie artists appearing in music videos, thus this is a good move and should be done more often.

09. Mista G feat Rabbit. Mac and Young Ruff - Symphony Nilave Best bits The ladies, the rabbits, Rabbit. Mac, Young Ruff, Mista G, the back-up dancers at 2.30, Rabbit. Mac’s Harimau Malaya jersey, Verdict Apparently, the original source of the video (Mista G official Youtube channel) has been removed, thus it’s a shame because this video was one of the highest viewed in the Mannin Mainthargal scene. Jay Seelan Raj, the director, did a good job, although more can be done. Besides, edited by Mohamed Hilmi Hanifa as well, this video stands out from the rest because of the lovely ladies.

09

08. Prem K, Vairavan and Blackjack – Maranthai Manameh

08

Best bits The location, the model, the rap by Homicidez and the editing by Shasin Verdict The reason why this video is in the Top Ten because it was produced in a smaller budget (I believe so) yet it managed to attract a large number of views. Besides, since the director, Shasin, has done a great job with minimal resources, thus it deserves to be recognized.

07. Saran N, Balan Kashmir & Juz McKenzie – Kalainyan Best bits

07

The MJ impersonator, Swagadee + Sree Sonic Image, Juz McKenzie, Balan and Saran Narayanan

Verdict

Only 1000+ views on Youtube, it is unsurprising as the video was not really promoted on social media. As far as I can remember, this is the first partnership between Swagadee and Sree Sonic Image. It is a good video which pays tribute to the late Michael Jackson.

06. Vilaiyaatu Pasange Movie Soundtrack

Best bits

06

Rabbit Mac, Sheezay, Daddy Shaq and Shamini Ramasamy doing what they do best, the set, the editing, Reenetha and Jasmine

Verdict

An awesome music video for an awesome movie. This is the first video which features all three Psycho Unit artists - Daddy Shaq, Rabbit Mac and Sheezay. Superbly edited and good storyboard, this is the type of music videos which will surely elevate the Tamil industry.

05.Asthaka - Let’s Get It Together Best bits

05

Nadine Ann Thomas, Cassandra Patrick and Ayu Shamsudin, the settings and lighting, the tabla, Ashtaka

Verdict

04.Rabbit. Mac - Ma Carrotz

Best bits

04

July 2011, everyone was shocked when Reshmonu revealed his latest project Ashtaka’s new music video - Let’s Get It Together. Let’s Get It Together is probably the finest ever music video produced as no flaws can be found. SHPice Pictures had done a great job in delivering such an awesome music video with well-known models!

Vevo Channel, Rabbit Mac’s expressions, the entire crew, Cub’Ally, Transformers, the skit, Sree Sonic Image and Swagadee

Verdict

The amazing partnership of Sree Sonic Image and Swagadee has done it again, this time with Rabbit Mac. The video created a storm on social media when it was first released, there are two reasons for this - one, the quality of the video and two, first time a Mannin Mainthargal act has a Vevo account. The video speaks volumes and the succes of it promises a great partnership between Sree Sonic Image and Swagadee.

03. K Town Clan Give Em the Ughh!!

03

Best bits

The urban gangster feel, the bulldog, the burning set during Roshan’s verse, the Machas and the dancing at 5.15

Verdict

When K Town Clan’s Give Em The Ughh was released, everybody knew K Town Clan was back. The only difference was, this time around, they have found their voice and identity - Twisted Crunk, as they call it. Whatever they may call it, trust me, it sounds good and this video does justice for the track! VRPShots have done a remarkable job in making this video which clearly suits the awesome track! Ignore the skit, if you are a sensitive person.

02.Psychomantra

Cheers

Best bits

02

The wheelchair stunts, the girls, Psychomantra’s flow, Crank KS as the devil, the lorry scene at 2.55

Verdict

Cheers is probably one of the best videos ever produced, a big thanks for SpeedFive for producing a music video, which Psychomantra clearly deserves. Psychomantra is one of the most consistent acts who has been delivering hits after hits, and with this video, it is only proper we acknowledge the man for his musical versatility. One of the highest Youtube views, Cheers is not just a track, rather an anthem for the Machas! Patthale Patthale Sooru Patthale!

01. Sheezay

Rockaboy

Best bits

Sheezay, the bharatanatyam, M.G.R impersonator, the entire Psycho. Unit Crew, the motiongraphy by December, silver medal in BMM Global Awards, K Town Clan and Altimet, the girl with the lollipop, Rubba Bend’s introduction.

Verdict

The bronze winners of the Bite My Music Global Awards, it is only apt to rank Rockaboy number one. Candyman has justified himself both as a director and editor, while December had done an awesome job with the motiongraphy. Nonetheless, Psycho. Unit mentioned that the success of this video was due to culminative efforts, as each crew member

01

JUNE 2012 /

had contributed their ideas and thoughts during the pre- and post production of the video. This clearly underlines the importance of working together and that is what Psycho. Unit is all about since their arrival in the Mannin Mainthargal scene. On another note, Candyman has his own video production company called Gecko Scope, while December runs Rapla Psycho. Unit. The sucesss of this video has certainly increased the public’s expectation on both Candyman and December and it will be interesting to see what’s in store for both this creative duo.

MANNINMAINTHARGAL COLLABORATIONS 1

Balan Kashmir One Two All Star Remix

featuring Dr.Sakthi, Mr.Dan, Roshan Jamrock, Rabbit Mac, Sayla, Sri Rascol, Stylomannavan, Switch, Shezzay, Tactmatic and Young Ruff.

One of the biggest all star collaboration to date which features Balan Kashmir with Dr.Sakthi, Mr.Dan, Roshan Jamrock, Rabbit Mac, Sayla, Sri Rascol, Stylomannavan, Switch, Shezzay, Tactmatic and Young Ruff. This track will never disappoint you as it bands together an all-star lineup of Mannin Mainthargals. With furious lyrics and fastrhyming spits, all the acts performed like they were veterans in the scene.

2

Rabbit. Mac Rabbit Anthem

featuring C Loco, Landslyde, Moots, Altimet, Balan Kashmir, Roshan Jamrock and Haze Freaky G. Hard-spitting, fast-rhyming and jam-packed, Rabbit Anthem is truly a massive collaboration, the song dwells about social ills in the society and the questions which arises from it. The track features a long list of heavyweights - C Loco, Landslyde, Moots, Altimet, Balan Kashmir, Roshan Jamrock and Haze Freaky G. It is indeed one of the best collaborations and as Rabbit puts it - its the ‘world peace song’.

3

Lock Up Futtayo Extended

featuring Rabbit Mac, Sheezay, Stylomanavan, Magen Aattam 100 Vagai and Playa. The funniest collaboration ever which features Nathan and Switch of Lock Up with Rabbit Mac, DIWAN (Sheezay and Stylomanavan), Magen Aattam 100 Vagai (Vikadakavi) and Playa. Counted as a classic and an instant hit, Futtayo Extended is both comical and infectious, trust me, you’ll be listening to it again and again.

There is nothing better in music than a successful, perfect collaboration. In the celebration of good music and unity, Mannin Mainthargals have always worked with each other to deliver catchy numbers and legendary songs. If you are a keen follower of the local scene or an avid listener to THR Raaga, then songs such as Ennavaley and Give em the Ughh Remix are familiar tunes in your head by now. Hence, here is the first part of perfect Mannin Mainthargal collaborations which I believe have made an impact one way or another.

4

Saran Z Ennavaley

featuring Dhilip Varman, Saint TFC, Thila Laxshman and Psychomantra. Released 3 years ago, this song still gets frequent airplay. Personally, this is my favourite collaboration and I believe only Saran Z can deliver such high quality tracks. The singers who were featured in this song - Dhilip Varman, Saint TFC, Thila Laxshman and Psychomantra have all gone to have successful careers. Many have mentioned that this is the track which propelled their careers, especially for Thila, Psychomantra and Saint TFC as Dhilip Varman had already carved his name in the local scene. Besides, this was the track that also made Saran Z a household name albeit making him one of the most sought after music composers.

5

K Town Clan Give Em The Ughh! Remix

featuring Rabbit Mac, Sheezay, Balan Kashmir, Psychomantra and Young Ruff. Give Em the Ughh! was huge and Give Em the Ughh! Remix is even huge - with the addition of Rabbit Mac, Sheezay, Balan Kashmir, Psychomantra and Young Ruff, you can expect an eargasm! I guess that is what you should expect when Twisted Crunk meets Tamil Rap. The lyrics are off the hook and creative, the beats are made for you to get on the dance floor!

MeAndMyPunjabiFriend The Amazing Bhangra Duo

Have you heard of this new bhangra duo called MeAndMyPunjabiFriend (MNMPF)? If you haven’t, then you are missing something awesome happening in our local scene.

Their latest music video Pessa has clocked 10, 000+ views. The video is produced by the amazing duo Swagadee and Sree Sonic Image, who had delivered a string of quality music videos such as Ma Carrotz, Kalainyan and now Pessa. The video aside, MNMPF is likely to blow your mind off with their music album which is set to be released somewhere in 2012. The group consists of the awesome duo Jiggy Jit and Juz McKenzie, previously known as Pravin McKenzie. Their album is produced by two heavyweights - Saran Narayanan and Zalee from White Noise Studios.

took Saran three years to complete, thus expect it to be made in perfection and high quality. They recently participated in Bhangra Showdown 2012 that was held at the Long Bar, One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya.

As the name of the group suggests, their music incorporates Punjabi rap with the aim to enrich the diverse Malaysian music landscape. Unit Asia who needs no introduction in this blog. MeAndMyPunjabiFriend has also promised that their album is to give a new taste of Punjabi Hip Hop with its intense lyrics and beats ranging from electro, rap and R&B. Their 14 track album

Bhangra Showdown 2012

Their performance received positive reviews and their songs were well received by the crowd. Let’s see what MNMPF has in store for us.

K TOWN CLAN YEARS GONE BY! How many of you guys can remember this?

K Town Clan, winners of the first ever Blast Off - the vocal category. When they entered the competition, they were nobodies, they had limited experience performing on a stage, they had no singles or even demos, for that matter, out in comparison to the other groups. They promoted a music genre which was entirely new to the young Malaysian population. Yet with odds against them, they won the competition (by a milestone, if my memory does not fail me).

Upon winning Blast Off, K Town Clan released their single Come Get Some and then vanished and now after six or seven years, they released their debut album, Playground, last year and I can vouch that their six years of experimenting and searching for their sound has paid off. They came out as big winners in the recent VIMA awards and numerous awards in BMM. The years gone by has only made K Town Clan stronger and stronger, let’s hope they continue doing good music.

BETWEEN V-SHA AND RUBBA. BEND

When it comes to Tamil Hip Hop, it is entirely dominated by male emcees. It is very rare to see female emcees stepping up and trying to break the glass ceiling and even if they do, they are brushed off immediately. In the west, female MCs are ‘required’ to display their body parts and spew slutty rhymes in order to gain recognition, something which I am personally against. Hip-Hop is about sharing ideas with rhymes and flow, not belittling one another – the latest debacle between Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj is just the tip of the iceberg. Back to Tamil Hip-Hop, particularly in Malaysia, there are not many female Emcees who actively involved in the local scene. From my limited knowledge, I only know two who are still active– Rubba. Bend and V-Sha. There are two more I have come across – Lady Rappers under Masta K and Darchayani who was featured in the Villanz’s Kolluso Shop, but I am unsure of their current whereabouts. The focus of this post will be on V-Sha and Rubba. Bend who I believe will be the trailblazers in the Mannin Mainthargal scene, particularly as role models for upcoming female emcees.

of V-licious saw V-Sha collaborating with the MVP team for their second singles titled Ponnambalam. She also featured in Switch’s electro Kolaveri and El Hustler’s Bounce. V-Sha credits her success to Switch, who played an influential role in the making of her first single. As for the design and photography of the singles art, she credits Thiaga Kartun and Chris Anthony. V-Sha hinted that she is preparing her album and it is likely to include international artists, thus she is one female rapper, we must look out for in the near future.

Firstly, V-Sha came into prominence with ‘Vlicious’, a track produced by Switch Lock Up, which was released on November 2011 to positive reviews. Besides, the track was well-received and this was also the first (as far as I can remember), a solo female rapper from Malaysia can stake the claim of her own song. Thus, this earned V-Sha the title the 1st Indian Rapper Girl from Malaysia. The success

Unlike V-Sha, Rubba Bend was a virtually unknown and emerged in the Mannin Mainthargal scene as a homegrown artist from Psycho. Unit. She is the first female act from Psycho. Unit. Her first appearance in the local scene was through the hit Rockaboy video. She made her entrance in the music scene through Sheezay’s Kambathu Rapper – where she was featured in two songs – Indian

JUNE 2012 /

14

Before venturing into the music scene, V-Sha had already made a name for herself as a radio jockey in THR Raaga. She was already a well-known producer, announcer, anchor and voiceover talent. Likewise, most people would be able to recognize her signature voice as she is a favourite among radio listeners. Therefore, it can be said that the experience possessed by V-Sha in the media industry is absolutely top-notch and valuable for her future success.

Monster and M.O.D. Although, only featuring in two songs yet she managed to create her own fanbase through both the tracks. This was mainly due to her distinct sound and from what I’ve heard, it clearly appeared that she had done a great deal of homework to get where she is now. There is not much of information available about Rubba Bend for me to elaborate but one thing for sure is Rubba Bend is the female act to watch out for. Given the time and opportunity, she will conquer the Tamil Industry and if she ventures to the English scene, expect her to be the bomb. In addition, all reviews on Kambathu Rapper praises Rubba. Bend’s performance and they all expect more from her. Indeed, Psycho. Unit has done a great job in giving birth to the female act we all have been waiting for. Female rappers play an essential role in the hip hop scene and in a scene like Mannin Mainthargal, which is dominated by male rappers, the addition of female rappers will surely spice up the scene. The only thing all female rappers want is a platform to showcase their artistry, so let’s provide them the platform and support. And between V-Sha and Rubba. Bend, there is a lot more they can offer to the local scene and let’s hope they lay down a proper path for future female rappers in the hip hop game.

The music video chronicles the life of a young boy brought up by a single mother who grows up with, shall I say, a certain hatred towards Naduvan, the one word that has been creating God. DR. BURN speaks about NADUVAN

Creator who releases the soul of all worldly attachments and ends the agony. This is what we have tried to show in the video. Can you tell us about the contributing artists for this production? This was huge teamwork which was definitely necessary for success. It is produced by Ugly Duckling Studios who I have known for quite some time now. The stills and art design is by Haran Photography. And then there is Asthana Arts. I’ve been following their efforts for a few years now. Michael, Ganesan and MC DV, who are friends and good artists. Finally, Samuel J Dass who is a prominent Sitarist in our country with numerous International recognitions and awards. I’m a big fan of his and he was a supportive pillar to this project.

What does Naduvan mean and why this specific choice of a title? Truth be told, literally Naduvan means the God of Death, Eman or Kaalan. This is the meaning in Tamil dictionaries. But in today’s society, central government is also called as Naduvan Arasaanggam. Thus giving the word an alternate meaning of a supreme leader who is capable of passing judgment, and making decisions. An authority figure. A middleman. So, I interpreted the word Naduvan as creator. The middleman between death and afterlife. As to why I chose the term is it is mentioned in a song by a Sithar called Kaduveli Sithar. A verse in the song loosely tanslated means: when a woman of beauty and grace is ogled by another man, her brother enrages and threatens to kill him. But when she dies and is nothing but just ash, will the same man accept her ashes? (this part, I translated from Tamil to English, so pardon me if there are any mistakes).

How was the Music Video shooting experience, give us some trivia? It’s shot in Pantai Kelanang, Banting. This is the place that most Hindus in Malaysia come to dissolve the ashes of the deceased. We felt this would be a very apt place to shoot the video. The video was shot with four different types of digital cameras. Especially, the slow motion sequences were shot with a camera called NEX FS 100 which has never been used to shoot any local Tamil productions before this.

Can you give us a brief explanation on Saivism and it’s history? Saivism is now mainly practiced by the South Indians, namely the Tamilians. It is said to be 5000 year old and is even speculated to be present in Mohenjo Daro and Harappa during the Indus Civilization era. The finding of a three horned figurine called the Pasupathy which represents the Mummalanggal(Karma, Illusion and Ego) corresponds to this theory. We have shown this in the video with the three guys in white who represent these three things. These are the three things that tortures the soul entrapped in the body, a mere tool, even when death is near. Only to be salvaged by the

What’s next for Dr Burn? We are working on more commercial projects retaining the same team. Once that is done, there is an idea for another taboo subject like Naduvan. It’s a Pattinathar song.

Any ideas on releasing a making of video? Yes. As of now we have twenty five thousand views in two days, as per my calculations it should hit fifty thousand in two more days. When it hits hundred thousand, we will release a making of video. And I think this would happen in ten days. Let’s see if the fans make it happen.

So what is the bottom line, why Naduvan now? Dr Burn five years ago and now are two totally different people. I am used to making music as per the want of the producer and composer. Now I am at this point of life where I want to share my ideas and messages with full creativity freedom. Thus Naduvan was born. There is more to come.
