Thanks to the organizations that support our Master Artist Program:

Thanks to a grant from Horizon House – a senior living community in Seattle where Pratt has offered classes for several years – we are proud to begin offering free classes for our neighbors at Ernestine Anderson Place. Built in 2012, Ernestine Anderson Place (EAP) houses formerly homeless and low-income seniors, ages 55 and up, in the Central Area. Through the Horizon House grant, residents will have free access to on-site workshops at EAP, as well as classes and workshops next door at Pratt. Hands-on art programs for older adults have proven to have a positive impact on physical and mental health, longevity, and independence. Thank you, Horizon House!

Interview with Beccy Feather by Heather Olson Beccy Feather is a British-born glassmaker who lives and works in Bremerton, Washington. She navigates daily between the roles of production flame worker, artist, educator, and teadrinker. Her art work is a mixture of fine craft, humor, and home science. Beccy will be teaching a class at Pratt this summer: Sherlock Shakedown, August 4 – 10, 2018.

When did you first begin making glass art? I grew up in England and I started taking glass classes there. I began in the hot shop because they didn’t have a flameworking studio at my school and I was a glassblower for about seven years before I started flameworking. I started getting into flameworking when I came

to the US to get my MFA and I fell in love with it. I was enamored with the new possibilities and the things I could make with this method.

Can you tell me about the class you will be teaching at Pratt this summer? I will be teaching a class called Sherlock Shakedown, and we will be focusing on

Pratt Artist 9

design and color techniques, and how to make objects that are ergonomically appealing. I think the way an object feels in your hand is just as important as how it looks, so we will be working on that.

I like seeing people progress in their skills and take the next step to try new things. I learn as much from my students as they do from me. Teaching really tells you a lot about your own art making and your own processes. And it’s a great way to meet new people as well.

P H O T O : C O U RT E S Y O F T H E A RT I S T

What do you most enjoy about teaching?

What is your favorite kind of tea?

What has been your most challenging project to date?

I like Lady Grey. I am an avid tea drinker and I love it. It’s like Earl Grey’s fruitier wife. Or mistress. Whichever you prefer.

I entered a glass making competition recently where I placed second. The final round was held in Las Vegas and it was a two-day competition where

“The beauty of flameworking is that you can do it just about anywhere. You can set up a studio in your basement and you can get by with very little in the way of equipment. With borosilicate glass, the possibilities are endless. Melt stuff!”

we were making our projects from 11am to 6pm. I worked the entire time and just ate bananas so I could keep going. I placed second and am the only woman to have done that so far. It was a huge challenge, physically and emotionally grueling, and I am not sure I’d do it again. We had to incorporate a theme into our work, and I chose Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), because I am an immigrant, and my husband is a Dreamer. It was very personal to me and I wanted to say something about that through my art.

What would be your dream project? I’d like to do a collaborative project with a group of people in a school setting. I’d like to create a sort of recipe for flameworkers that we could all work on together. I would also be interested in making some of my pieces in a much larger scale.

What advice do you have for young people who want to become glass artists? I say go for it! The beauty of flameworking is that you can do it just about anywhere. You can set up a studio in your basement and you can get by with very little in the way of equipment. With borosilicate glass, the possibilities are endless. Melt stuff!

Tuition Assistance 27

2018 Guidelines for Tuition Assistance We are committed to making our classes available to everyone by offering scholarships and tuition assistance. A dedicated amount of financial assistance is available each year to adults, youth, and teens that otherwise cannot afford to participate in Pratt classes or workshops.

For full information and to apply, please go to our website at

pratt.org/tuitionassistance.

Tuition Assistance Program Pratt’s mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Pratt raises funds to subsidize the cost of participation and maintain the lowest possible fees for its programs. And yet, there are many who still cannot afford to participate. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program aims to provide a deeper subsidy to those who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial limitations. Tuition Assistance is applied as a 75% discount on the class fee for a class of the applicant’s choice. TA does not cover supply fees. Applicants are responsible to pay the remaining balance of the class fee as well as any supply fee associated with their chosen class.

The next Tuition Assistance deadlines are: Application period:
