Your artist is inside.
How do the arts contribute to a healthy society? This is a question I’ve been asked to answer a lot lately in response to new opportunities for (and pressing threats against) government funding of the arts. If you picked up this magazine and are reading this letter, then you probably agree on some level that the arts are important outlets for expression that foster personal growth and positive social change. But while that statement may resonate with folks like us who are already inclined to support the arts, it leaves so many others without adequate explanation. A far more comprehensive case for support is required, including these important reasons: • The arts are valuable partners for human services such as public education, healthcare, crime prevention, and others.
• The arts have proven to help our children grow up to be more successful and more competitive in our creative economy. • The arts make our neighborhoods safer, more vibrant, more desirable places to live. • The arts are a smart investment, proven to have exponential economic impact in surrounding communities. Compassion. Justice. Wellness. Prosperity. These are some of the key outcomes of the arts that we don’t talk about enough. These are the ways that every citizen benefits from the arts, whether they participate directly or not. At Pratt, we believe that access to the arts is not a privilege. It is a basic human need and a vital contributor to the health of our society. Moving forward, I think I can do a better job of sharing this perspective. Perhaps you will help? Cheers,

Wood Laminations This is your invitation to a guided tour of David Chatt’s exploration of a medium. David has spent all of his adult life discovering, rediscovering, learning about, innovating, and sewing tiny glass beads one to the next. With this class, he offers you anything that you can fit into the time you have together. He encourages students to come with a curious open mind and ideas of their own, and he enjoys the process of figuring things out so “out of the box” questions are encouraged. May 22–26 This 5-day master class is intended to show students different methods of lamination that they can incorporate into their woodworking as embellishment or as works of art. Skills introduced include designing laminate with either end grain or side grain; millwork of rough stock for flatness, parallel and true edges; band sawing with fence for dimension; grain orientation; methods of clamping, with a fence or with shims; re-truing surface; slicing laminate on band saw and preparing other stock necessary for the second lamination; re-lamination; re-slicing of laminate now ready for inclusion in project. Martha’s passion is to create personal, unique, three-dimensional works of art with exotic hardwoods and brightly colored veneers that are dyed in her studio. Interview with Virginia Causey by Heather Olson “Teaching has been my foremost focus for decades. At the same time, creating and exhibiting my work locally, nationally, and internationally have also been important key aspects in my life. My artwork starts with detailed record keeping in sketchbooks on how I view the natural world around us. Vague sketches develop into line drawings with hints of color. I began this detailed process when I lost the ability to create three-dimensional rotating and colored images in my in mind. That was something I had believed would be a constant throughout my life— surprise! I cannot quite accomplish it any longer so my pencil became my new best friend. I enjoy pushing myself to an artistic edge to create new and exciting work that I then share with my students. I am foremost a teacher, silversmith, and fabricating jeweler that uses non-ferrous metals and stones. I am compassionate and committed to passing my skills and abilities on to my students.” When did you first start making art? I started making art when I was in grade school. I have one piece that I have saved. We made “animules” which were paper mache animal figures, and I still have a giraffe. When I was in the 5th grade, I went to an after-school lapidary program at church. I collected rocks (sometimes by swallowing them, to the chagrin of my mother) so learning how to cut and polish rocks was better than swallowing.
Pratt Artist 10 Cutting rocks is not a fast process, and they would often break. Therefore, I started classes.
I have tried many different ventures. I wanted to be a veterinarian, and checked out the program at Washington State University. I was informed that I had to maintain 4.0 to stay in the program, and they did not want women in the veterinarian program. Therefore, I looked into the University of Washington fisheries department, and was told I would be accepted, but would not be able to go out on the fishing/research ship. This was in the 1960s. I started at the University of Washington in dental hygiene, but soon transferred to Everett Community College to study under Russell Day. Chuck Close was there as well and I met him several times. Russell emphasized presentation—your work not only had to be amazing, but pristine. I became a flight attendant for many years, and had some pilot training. Concurrently, I attended Seattle Pacific University and had full access to the art department. I took multiple classes in ceramics, design, sculpture, and textiles. I finished a five-year metal arts degree at the University of Washington while attending many other art institutions. In addition, I was a scuba diving instructor with various diving certifications, climbed most of the mountains around here, and was an avid equestrian and owner. Most people ask me, “What haven’t you done in your life?” I only sleep about four hours a night and in this way, I can accomplish more in one lifetime.
Tell me about your experiences teaching at Pratt. I started teaching at Pratt in 1988. Up until a few years ago, I taught

Have jewelry and metals always been your main focus?
every block. I have slowed down a bit, however, I still teach three to four classes a quarter. Teaching has never felt like a job to me. It is my bliss or my life’s focus. Every time I teach a new class with 8 to 12 people that I have never met before, their desire to learn exhilarates me. Attending art fairs throughout Western Washington gives me the opportunity to see my past students showing their art. I emphasize safety in all of my classes. If you are using any kind of equipment, you have to concentrate fully on what you are doing. Teaching is very much like being on stage. It is like a live performance that changes daily. Before becoming a flight attendant, I was intimidated to speak in front of an audience, however this has

You also teach at Seattle Pacific University—what do you teach there and how does that differ? I started teaching at SPU in 1995 where I teach Metal Arts. Students at SPU pay a considerable amount of money to attend classes, which are taken for credit. It is an academic environment, very different from Pratt, which I really enjoy. I emphasize how important it is to keep practicing in order to get better. It takes time to perfect skills and to achieve a high skill level. You have to practice soldering repeatedly. It is critical to learn that not everything we make is precious. Students are taught design and fabrication skills; they have a series of exercises, reports, assignments and a final series of three pieces to accomplish throughout the quarter while learning the principles and elements of art and design.
We are celebrating Pratt’s 40th anniversary this year. Do you have stories from the early days of Pratt? I started taking classes at Pratt in 1982. I took many classes from different instructors such as Chris Williams and Kelly Scott. Pratt brings in great master artists and I enjoyed classes with Jack da Silva, Marilyn da Silva, Michael Good, Ron Ho, Phil Baldwin, and Jennifer Stenhouse (to name only a few). I continue to encourage other instructors and artists to teach here such as Sharrey Dore. I have taught many students who are/were Pratt instructors: Ramona Solberg, Julia Lowther, Susannah Osborne, Amy Reeves, and many more. Teaching is a lifelong excursion which I shall never run out of steam doing.
Everyone teaches differently and has different skills, and by continually taking classes, I add to my teaching encyclopedia. In addition, I am always learning new and creative ways of making art plus watching other teaching methods. I have taken a class from Julia Harrison—I enjoyed working with wood. A Pratt story: never order 100 plus ounces of silver for students during snow season. The order came uncut with various gauges and amounts of wire and sheet and I was at Pratt and proceeded to parcel-out the order. Well, four hours later and with almost a foot of snow, I had to spend the night in the Hollowware Room on a table... that doesn’t happen today.
Describe your dream project. I would like to make an unusual ring out of small precious cab-stones. I met a stonecutter that had a ring like a Persian carpet that flowed across his hand. It had an amazing tactile quality and the stones looked like gumdrops. I can still feel my mouth water when I think of that ring. When I go to gem and mineral shows I end up buying many small semi and precious stones for my future ring. Purchasing stones is like being in a candy store. I have acquired more than enough stones, however, the ring is still unmade, it’s often thought about, but only resides in a sketch book.
What’s the best advice you have to give to students? Keep working! Try many different skills—be multi-faceted. It takes practice, failure and repeating the same things “over and over again” in order to reach a creative goal. Experiment. Find out what your burning desire is and keep doing it.

Hot glass casting classes encourage beginning and returning students to work together to create outstanding sculptures by ladling molten glass into sand. Explore the ancient art of creating sand molds and how to use materials including plaster, steel, and found objects.

2017 Guidelines for Tuition Assistance We are committed to making our classes available to everyone by offering scholarships and tuition assistance. A dedicated amount of financial assistance is available each year to adults, youth, and teens that otherwise cannot afford to participate in Pratt classes or workshops.

Tuition Assistance Program Pratt’s mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Pratt raises funds to subsidize the cost of participation and maintain the lowest possible fees for its programs. And yet, there are many who still cannot afford to participate. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program aims to provide a deeper subsidy to those who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial limitations. Tuition Assistance is applied as a 75% discount on the class fee for a class of the applicant’s choice. TA does not cover supply fees. Applicants are responsible to pay the remaining balance of the class fee as well as any supply fee associated with their chosen class.
Eligibility Those whose household income falls at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (shown below) are eligible for Tuition Assistance. If your household income is the same or less than the amount in the following chart, you are eligible for Tuition Assistance at Pratt Fine Arts Center. * Household Size: this number includes the applicant, any other individuals who share financial responsibility for the household, and all dependents ** Household Income: the combined gross income generated each year by all household members, as reported on IRS annual income tax forms
