Interview with Kim McIntyre by Heather Olson Kim McIntyre is one of the few women in the furniture-making world. She loves the creative problem solving that goes into woodworking. She thrives on the quest for perfection while working in partnership with the natural beauty of the wood, and she has gained a reputation for integrity, honesty and hard work. After more than a decade of honing her craft, she has decided to take a leap of faith and dive more deeply into the work she loves. She has started McIntyre Furniture, LLC with the goal of crafting beautiful, functional, sustainable furniture that people can feel proud to make a part of their homes for generations. She is growing her business in green ways and committed to using earth-friendly finishes. Prior to becoming a furniture maker, Kim worked as an Outward Bound instructor for six years. She seeks to bring her love and respect of nature to others via the natural beauty of wood. Kim will be Pratt’s new wood studio manager starting in January 2018!

When did you first begin working with wood? I went to a very experiential college— Sterling College in Vermont—which only has around 100 students for the bachelor’s degree programs. They had a required class called Reverence for Wood. It was about woodworking, and also about time management. You can’t do a woodworking project at the last minute, so we had to plan it out. You had to have three different kinds of wood joints, three coats of finish, and it had to be in a show on a certain day. You had to plan the piece and make time for the glue and finishes to dry. I kept designing my schedule so I could keep re-taking that class. Prior to that, I grew up in a house that is over 100 years old with my parents who are total do-it-yourselfers. We would knock out chimneys and walls, and we built a great room. My dad did a lot of woodwork and has a hobbyist wood shop that I played in as a kid. I started designing my own things in college. I would make a canoe paddle and then go whitewater canoeing using that paddle. I wanted to keep pursuing it. Several years after college I became a full-time student at Vermont Woodworking School. From there I found ways to make work to generate income.

What do you love about Pratt—what makes it special? This is definitely a special place. This wood studio is reasonable priced, has great tools, is very well-lit and has a ton of room. You don’t have to make a long-term commitment to use the space; you can choose between day or month long memberships, which allow you to pick what works for you. When I lived in Denver, I worked as a manager in a maker space, so I gained a passion for places where a lot of different kinds of artists are working on things. The crossover here is really great. If I have a question about working with

Pratt Artist 7

“Go out on the ledge slowly. You don’t have to rush to live the dream.” metal, there are people here I can talk to. If a family member wants a glass piece, I know people here that do glass art. These people become part of your community. I’ll be out at social events and I’ll run into artists from Pratt all the time. My family thinks this is the neatest thing—I’ve become very connected because of this place.

Have you faced challenges as a woman in the furniture making business? Yes, to some extent. I try not to dwell on it too much. I took an internship early on in my career at a big cabinetry shop on the east coast. I was supposed to get to learn all of the disciplines within this huge shop, but they put me on sanding, and they didn’t let me off sanding. I got a lot of experience running a sander, and once I left they put an ad in the paper: looking for a female that is perfection-oriented. They wouldn’t let me do any of the heavy lifting or other kinds of work, even though I was advocating for myself with the managers. I think they assumed building is for men, and lighter duties like sanding and detail work were for women. In general, working around the guys there was a tough environment. They wouldn’t really acknowledge me at all. When we took breaks outside I felt like I was a ghost. It could have been because I was a short-term employee, but I don’t think so. Now, I meet guys at Pratt and they are very excited to share knowledge and talk about work. It’s a very different and much more welcoming environment here. It depends on who you work with and where you are in the country. Here at Pratt there are often several women working in the wood studio. The Pratt environment is a joy to be around.

Pratt Artist 8

What is the most challenging piece you have created so far? You can bring complexity into every project you do. I have made several kayaks. They take a ton of time to complete and are big challenges but so satisfying when you get them on the water and get to paddle away from shore. The shelf stand I did for a client’s birdcage has a lot of complex joinery so that was challenging also. I built low shelves/benches last summer that were six of a kind and everything had to be exactly the same. I had to look at wood grains and color tones to make them work together as a matched set. I have designed and made three cribs. Each one had a very different design concept yet each one needed to come apart and be able to be stored flat as well as exceed today’s crib safety standards. I’ve done some veneer work and that’s a challenge too.

What is your dream project? A few years ago it would have been large live-edge slab tables. I still like them and have made one for my own dining room. I really like working with customers who want to take the time to get a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture. I love working with people that understand what it takes to make something from the concept to the finish line. It takes time to figure out the right kinds of wood and the right finishes. I like people who get that it’s a process and takes craftspersonship. Those are my favorite projects.

What would you say to budding woodworkers who want to make art or pursue a career in the field? There are many very talented woodworkers out there who are willing to share their skills and knowledge. If you have an interest, you can turn to books, magazines and the internet to get a solid baseline of knowledge.

When I got serious about it, my dad gave me a bunch of his old woodworking magazines. Read as much as you can. Find a mentor—woodworkers are a very giving community. To pursue a career, build a lot of furniture for your family and friends first. Learn how much time it takes to make things, and build your skills. It takes several hours to pick out the right wood, and several days to mill it all up. You will gain an understanding of price points and realize that you need to get paid for labor as well as materials. Go out on the ledge slowly. You don’t have to rush to live the dream. Build skills and learn how to network and get your name out there. It’s great to be able to build up a waiting list so that if you make a mistake on a project—and you will—it won’t crush your business. Have a supportive spouse or partner if you can. That really helps too. Pratt is a really great environment. Taking classes here in many different mediums is really helpful and inspiring. Try new skills and have fun.

Tuition Assistance 23

2017–18 Guidelines for Tuition Assistance We are committed to making our classes available to everyone by offering scholarships and tuition assistance. A dedicated amount of financial assistance is available each year to adults, youth, and teens that otherwise cannot afford to participate in Pratt classes or workshops.

For full information and to apply, please go to our website at

pratt.org/tuitionassistance.

Tuition Assistance Program Pratt’s mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Pratt raises funds to subsidize the cost of participation and maintain the lowest possible fees for its programs. And yet, there are many who still cannot afford to participate. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program aims to provide a deeper subsidy to those who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial limitations. Tuition Assistance is applied as a 75% discount on the class fee for a class of the applicant’s choice. TA does not cover supply fees. Applicants are responsible to pay the remaining balance of the class fee as well as any supply fee associated with their chosen class.

Eligibility Those whose household income falls at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (shown below) are eligible for Tuition Assistance. If your household income is the same or less than the amount in the following chart, you are eligible for Tuition Assistance at Pratt Fine Arts Center. * Household Size: this number includes the applicant, any other individuals who share financial responsibility for the household, and all dependents ** Household Income: the combined gross income generated each year by all household members, as reported on IRS annual income tax forms
