The end of our 40th anniversary year is fast approaching and we are capping it off with the biggest celebration yet…a massive exhibition at a major regional museum! Making our Mark: Art by Pratt Teaching Artists is a commemorative exhibition featuring work from Pratt teaching artists throughout our organization’s influential history. These artists have not only made their mark on Pratt Fine Arts Center, but have collectiveMaking Our Mark: Art by ly shaped the vibrant visual arts ecology of Pratt Teaching Artists the Pacific Northwest. Nov 10, 2017 – April 8, 2018 Bellevue Arts Museum Over the past 40 years, Pratt has employed more than 1,200 teaching artists. Whether they shared their talents in one class or in hundreds, each of them contributed to Pratt’s reputation as a world class resource for arts education. We are thrilled to bring together works of art from nearly 300 of those teaching artists for what is surely the most impressive display of talent ever shown in one place. I dare you to see for yourself and argue otherwise. There is a terrible idiom that says that “those who cannot do, teach”. If ever such a thing were proven false, it is through this exhibition. Each exhibiting artist demonstrates mastery of their chosen media and a unique independent voice. That these artists have also chosen to share their expertise through teaching is clearly not indicative of any deficiency; it is the selfless gift that they continue to offer you each and every day in our studios. Interview with Larry Calkins by Heather Olson “My work draws from history and familiarity, a sense of time and place, from important people in my life and a deep appreciation of nature. I tend to work in series of paintings or sculptures as I go from point to point. Each piece informs the next and creates a personal narrative of events that I encounter as an artist and observer, husband, son and friend.� Larry Calkins works with a large variety of media, from fabric, wood and metal to encaustics to bookmaking, keeping his sense of discovery fresh and exciting, often leaning on sketches from his notebooks that have captured important and not so important events in his life. He began exhibiting in 1994 at the Mia Gallery in Seattle, and is currently represented by the American Primitive Gallery in New York, Rice Polak in Provincetown, MA and Tanner Hill in Chattanooga, TN. He has worked as an art instructor since 2005.

You’ve been an instructor at Pratt for many years—when did you start teaching here? It was in 2002 or 2003. I had been working at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, and met Michelle Bufano, who became the executive director at Pratt some years later. She encouraged me to come teach here.

How was Pratt different then than it is now? The classes were much larger. I started teaching encaustic, and I was only the second person in this area to teach that. The first was Jeff Gunn who is now in Portland. We always had a waiting list for those classes, and class sizes were always big. Everyone suddenly wanted to do encaustic, and we were the only game in town. A lot of my students went on to teach their own classes. Encaustic is very popular on the West Coast and the East Coast. People love it for the organic and visceral nature of the art. It’s still expanding and becoming more popular, and you see a lot of it in galleries.
When did you first begin making art? I always drew. In high school I always had a sketch book, and I travelled a lot and drew a lot of what I saw. I trained to be a photographer and I did commercial photography for a long time. I vacillate between painting, drawing and photography.
You also teach on behalf of Pratt at Amazon’s new in-house art studio. Tell me about that. They have a really great studio—it looks out over the street and it has a lot of great features, including lots of electricity. In the early days of Pratt we had a very crazy electrical system with lots of blown fuses. Amazon people are very serious about learning. For a teacher, that’s exciting. It’s a great environment—people walk

around with their pets, and I feel quite at home there. Art and technology feed each other and I hope we can keep collaborating in ways that are beneficial to Pratt as well.
We’re living in very unique and unsettling times. Do you find making art helpful in dealing with stress or difficulty? Making art is very helpful. I find that if I can draw through issues, I can get things down on paper and that helps relieve stress. It’s good to get things out of your head. Sometimes my drawings can be a bit dark, and sometimes they are very political. I did an article recently on political art, right after the election, and some people in the Red States might not like all of it, but it’s fun to say what you want to say. I think art helps. More people signed up to take
Pratt Artist 10 art classes right after the election. People needed it.
What do you love most about being an artist? I love making art. The thing I like least is all the other stuff that has to go with it. I know you’re supposed to embrace that, but it’s a pain. Just to sit and draw is amazing. It’s like a meditation. I like thinking—I love going to bed thinking about work and waking up thinking about work.
Can you tell me about your work and your process?
What would be your dream project? The cover of The New Yorker. I have submitted a few drawings to them, but not a cover. I am Facebook friends with the cover editor, Francoise Mouly, and I’ve done projects with her before. I love The New Yorker covers.
Where can we see your work? I have a show now at the Gallery IMA. It’s a

What advice would you give someone who wants to make art and pursue a career? I’d say be true to yourself. Don’t be afraid of your own ideas. Work hard. The work doesn’t make itself. Look around, draw, learn history. Read. Don’t hang out only with artists. Hang out with lots of different people. Get the big picture. I am grateful to be here at Pratt. I’m grateful for my friends and colleagues here—it’s like going to school all the time. It’s a great community and it’s very important, not just for artists but for all the students. My work is somewhat varied compared to some artists and I don’t focus on one technique or medium. I do feel like my work is all about one thing. It’s usually about my life: how I see where I live, the animals, nature. I like noticing things. There’s a great saying: notice what you notice. If anything, my work is about that. I notice the now of my life, and my back story. I grew up in a pretty isolated community with some very interesting people, and my family still lives there. Travel influences my work too. I lived in England and have travelled a lot in Europe.

Coldworking
Hot glass casting classes encourage beginning and returning students to work together to create outstanding sculptures by ladling molten glass into sand. Explore the ancient art of creating sand molds and how to use materials including plaster, steel, and found objects.
Alter the shape and/or surface texture of glass using tools and processes that don’t rely upon heat. This includes cutting, grinding, carving, engraving, polishing and sandblasting – all of which provide opportunities for artists to resolve aesthetic and functional issues.

2017–18 Guidelines for Tuition Assistance We are committed to making our classes available to everyone by offering scholarships and tuition assistance. A dedicated amount of financial assistance is available each year to adults, youth, and teens that otherwise cannot afford to participate in Pratt classes or workshops.

Tuition Assistance Program Pratt’s mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Pratt raises funds to subsidize the cost of participation and maintain the lowest possible fees for its programs. And yet, there are many who still cannot afford to participate. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program aims to provide a deeper subsidy to those who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial limitations. Tuition Assistance is applied as a 75% discount on the class fee for a class of the applicant’s choice. TA does not cover supply fees. Applicants are responsible to pay the remaining balance of the class fee as well as any supply fee associated with their chosen class.
Eligibility Those whose household income falls at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (shown below) are eligible for Tuition Assistance. If your household income is the same or less than the amount in the following chart, you are eligible for Tuition Assistance at Pratt Fine Arts Center. * Household Size: this number includes the applicant, any other individuals who share financial responsibility for the household, and all dependents ** Household Income: the combined gross income generated each year by all household members, as reported on IRS annual income tax forms
