Art Classes & Events October – December 2017

Your artist is inside.

Meet Ben. Ben is an aspiring rocket scientist. He is one of hundreds of teenagers who benefit from art education at Pratt each year. “I enrolled in Pratt’s art classes to better comprehend the materials and techniques used in manufacturing. I hope this knowledge will allow me to design objects that can be more easily manufactured.” Ben’s art education will equip him with the tools to be the best rocket scientist he can be – to think creatively, to see things from new perspectives, to solve problems with ingenuity and innovation. Don’t believe me?

Meet Michelle. Michelle is an established rocket engineer. She is one of thousands of adults who benefit from art education at Pratt each year. “Classes at Pratt have enhanced my knowledge of metal properties and processes and have helped me approach design problems from a different perspective. “

Rather serendipitously, Michelle and Ben both took classes in the jewelry studio with the same instructor. This summer, we orchestrated a meeting of the two, instantly validating Ben’s experience and inspiring him to continue his pursuit.

Michelle and Ben, Summer 2017

People like Michelle and Ben come to Pratt seeking art engagements that offer them personal and professional transformation. We believe that everyone deserves that opportunity and you can help to make that possible. From now until the end of the year we are raising funds for our Access Fund, the fund that lowers the actual cost of all of our programs by 40% and allows us to offer scholarships, need-based financial assistance and free programs throughout the year.

Please consider making a meaningful gift to the Access Fund today! Cheers,

Steve Galatro, Executive Director

Interview with Asia Tail by Heather Pilder Olson Asia Tail lives in Tacoma, Washington. Her practice focuses on oil painting and drawing. Asia attended the Cooper Union School of Art in New York and graduated with a BFA and the Brandon Burns Stewart Memorial Prize for Excellence in Painting in 2014. She was an Artist Trust GAP Grant recipient and a Greater Tacoma Community Foundation Art Award nominee in 2015. Her work has recently been featured in the magazine New American Paintings, the exhibition NW Art Now @ TAM (formerly the Northwest Biennial), and in the exhibition Quota at SOIL Gallery in Seattle. In 2015, she created the Contemporary Native Voices project for Tacoma Art Museum, interviewing over 20 individuals on Native American representation in art. In 2016, she independently curated her first exhibition, Protect the Sacred at Spaceworks Gallery in Tacoma, which brought together work from 26 Native American artists and raised funds to fight the Dakota Access Pipeline. Asia is an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. Above: Rabbit Round

Artist Feature 7

it helped you to continue to work on your art?

Seer Seen

When did you first begin to make art? I’ve always identified as an art kid and started to actually identify as an artist in high school when I went to Tacoma School of the Arts. But really it was when I decided to go to an arts college that I knew I wanted to be an artist for the rest of my life.

Were you encouraged on your path? Did you feel supported in becoming an artist? I think I was incredibly lucky to have a supportive family. My mom went to art school before she went to business school, so there was a real sense of possibility there. I come from a community that is very rich in arts and culture, and so I grew up around it and was encouraged in ways that perhaps most folks are not.

Tell me about the Pratt scholarship that you received—did you find that

It’s been great! I had the Edwin T. Pratt scholarship, which was an honor since it’s named for the founder of Pratt. He seems like such an amazing man. It has had a big impact on my practice. I’ve been able to take a lot of different types of classes that I might not have tried otherwise. Now I’m using the materials and techniques I learned to make a series of collages, taking my work in a new direction I would not have explored before my time at Pratt. I was exposed to new teachers, new ideas and materials, and that’s been very fruitful.

What are you working on currently that you are excited about? I have an upcoming show with Raven Juarez, my childhood friend, and I am really excited about that. It’s our first time making work and showing together, and that will be in January 2018 at Spaceworks Gallery in Tacoma. I will be using some new collages and a new series of circular paintings which has been an interesting format for me to work with. The show is about the moon, and we’ll both be exploring the symbol as a metaphor for identity and transformation.

Which artists do you look to for inspiration? Who inspires you? Some of the people who have had the greatest impact on me have been my teachers. I think that personal connection is very valuable. Allison Katz is an incredible painter. I love her work. Native art has also been a huge inspiration, both historical objects as well as the incredible contemporary

Artist Feature 8

Subtle Puddle (left), Swallow Follow (right)

artists making work here in the Pacific Northwest and nationally. It’s always inspiring to see what my peers are making locally too, and to go see shows and performances. It all helps my practice grow.

Do you have a dream project that you hope to create? In a small way every new piece is the next dream project. It’s an ongoing process. I am really interested in not just making my own artwork but also in facilitating opportunities for other artists—especially artists of color. My dream might be to combine my own art practice with facilitating those opportunities for other artists. I’m still working on that balance. It’s up to artists to be leaders in our communities. I think there is something about an artist approaching curation and community building that brings a different voice and perspective that is valuable. I want to make spaces for Native people to create the art they want to create, and to express themselves the ways they want to, without being pressured by outside expectations of what it means to be an artist of color.

What advice do you have for young artists who want to make a living through making art? One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was in college from a painting teacher who told me to, “Just keep painting.” I think that can apply to any artform. I struggled for a long time to find my voice as a painter and was concerned that my work wouldn’t be relevant in the contemporary art world. The teacher assured me that there are many art worlds, and many audiences, and that above all I just need to keep painting. Words to live by I think. I later learned from Satpreet Kahlon that especially for artists of color, we need to create our own networks and art worlds, because the systems in place in the mainstream art world are often designed to keep us out. I would tell young people to support each other. Support other artists. Making a living as an artist isn’t about competition, it’s about building community and sharing opportunities with each other. Tuition Assistance 17

2017–18 Guidelines for Tuition Assistance We are committed to making our classes available to everyone by offering scholarships and tuition assistance. A dedicated amount of financial assistance is available each year to adults, youth, and teens that otherwise cannot afford to participate in Pratt classes or workshops.

For full information and to apply, please go to our website at

pratt.org/tuitionassistance.

Tuition Assistance Program Pratt’s mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Pratt raises funds to subsidize the cost of participation and maintain the lowest possible fees for its programs. And yet, there are many who still cannot afford to participate. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program aims to provide a deeper subsidy to those who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial limitations. Tuition Assistance is applied as a 75% discount on the class fee for a class of the applicant’s choice. TA does not cover supply fees. Applicants are responsible to pay the remaining balance of the class fee as well as any supply fee associated with their chosen class.

The next Tuition Assistance deadlines are: Application period:
