A city of creativity… I recently had the honor of becoming a member the Seattle Arts Commission. It’s only been a few months but already I am impressed and inspired – this is a powerfully diverse and brilliant collective. I’m quickly realizing that the commission shares many of the values that we cherish here at Pratt – access, opportunity, equity – and it is tremendously inspiring to see those commitments amplified by a group that serves and protects the cultural vitality of our entire city. The work of the commission has also prompted me to think more about the place of arts and culture in the context of our evolving urban landscape. For better or (arguably) worse, our city is changing so fast, right before our eyes. How will we preserve the cultural vibrancy of the past and present while embracing new opportunities for the future? What do we want a thriving city of creativity to really look like? How will Pratt fit in? These are tough questions with complicated answers. But make no mistake. I do not see Pratt’s role in our city diminishing even the slightest bit. In fact, I see it becoming more and more vital, more and more vibrant. So show up when you can and see for yourself. We’ll be here, offering all the signature programs you’ve come to love and many new wonders you never thought to explore. Cheers,

Steve Galatro Executive Director

INTERVIEW WITH

Tina Negri BY HEATHER OLSON

Tina Negri is a Jewelry Designer because of her love and passion for great design and a mix of old and new. She searches the world for unique treasures that she incorporates into her work. Although an Architect by trade, Tina has been designing Jewelry for over fifteen years. She studied jewelry design in Mexico, Texas, and Michigan before moving to Seattle. Her interest in vintage jewelry and the stories they tell has led her to her current work. Tina’s jewelry incorporates vintage elements with interesting textures and colors. The handcrafted pieces are all one of a kind with each showing the maker’s hand and its own unique finish. She shows and sells her work at designer boutique stores around the country.

18

P R A T T

@PM: When did you

to take the leap and make jewelry full time. It’s been at least 10 years now.

TN: I first became interest-

As an Architect, I worked on retail design and worked on many store concepts. After I left the last firm I worked for, one of our main clients knew I made jewelry and asked me if I’d do a trunk show for them with vintage jewelry. I sold to them for three years, so that was a great connection.

first become interested in making jewelry? ed when I was in architecture school. My last year, I took two semesters of jewelry design because I wanted to incorporate metals into my thesis model. I wanted to learn how to patina. I absolutely fell in love with it. I had been in school a long time, and I really wanted to practice as an Architect, so I worked for firms for 12 years in Michigan and here in Seattle. Over the years, I kept taking jewelry classes. I took classes here at Pratt, as well as in Mexico and other places, and I finally decided

@PM: What did you

enjoy about the classes you took here at Pratt? TN: I loved being able to

learn the basics of how to make anything. When I took J/M 2 I could bring

anything I’d seen, as well as chains and clasps, into class and I could learn how they were made. Getting the basics down was great. I felt like I got such a strong foundation here. One of my favorite teachers was Sarah Gascoigne. I felt like I could ask her anything. I learned so much. @PM: Would you be

interested in teaching? TN: I’m very detailed and

I’m not sure I’d teach all the expansive options that students might want to learn. I do love to show people how to do things if they ask me, but I’m not sure about teaching. (continued on page 27)
