An Artist for President! Wouldn’t that be cool!? While it doesn’t seem likely that we’re going to see an artist leading our country any time soon, we are soon to see one leading Pratt. That’s right! Come September, we welcome Jenny Pohlman, one half of the acclaimed artist duo Pohlman Knowles, as the next President of the Board for Pratt Fine Arts Center. A frequent student and regular user of Pratt’s facilities over decades, Jenny brings to the table a wealth of first-hand knowledge of Pratt that (arguably) no other President in Pratt’s history has had. Add to that a brilliant creative mind and the heart of a warrior, and we know we’ll be in good hands. As we look ahead to our 40th Anniversary in 2017, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than by promoting an artist to the highest position of leadership within our organization. After all, advancing artists – even the ones who aren’t willing to call themselves artists – is what we have done best all these years. If nothing else, an artist at the helm symbolizes that it’s a great time to be at Pratt. The creativity energy is palpable and inspiration is overflowing. Come and be a part of it! Cheers,

Steve Galatro Executive Director

BAM Biennial 2016:

Metalmorphosis BELLEVUE ARTS MUSEUM

SEPTEMBER 2, 2016 – LATE JANUARY, 2017

Work by many Pratt artists and instructors will be shown In 2010, Bellevue Arts Museum launched the BAM Biennial, a juried exhibition occurring every two years which focuses on the work of established and emerging Northwest artists, craftspeople, and designers, with an emphasis on current and new work. For each edition, Bellevue Arts Museum designates a new focus of exploration, be it a specific medium, technique, process, or theme in art, craft, and design. The fourth edition in the series, Metalmorphosis, is focused on the medium of metal. Whether precious or prosaic, metal has captivated makers and thinkers alike for over 10,000 years, inviting thoughts on transformation and attempts to unlock the secrets of the physical and metaphysical realms. The Museum received a record-breaking 330 applications for this year's biennial—a testament to the creative potential of this elemental material and the powerful inspiration it continues to evoke in art, craft, and design. From this talented and vast pool of applicants, 49 artists have been chosen to participate, many of whom are Pratt Fine Arts Center instructors. Courses taught by Metalmorphosis artists will be distinguished with .

INTERVIEW WITH

Scott Szloch BY HEATHER OLSON

Scott Szloch is a blacksmith and an instructor at Pratt. He has been teaching forging classes in the blacksmith shop since 2001. He received a fine arts education at the Art Institute of Boston and in 1993 started metalworking at Mass Art. That same year Scott moved to Seattle to work in a blacksmith shop and hasn’t stopped since. He has a home studio where he makes everything from nails to sculpture to architectural detail. He is an artist and a craftsman and he enjoys sharing what he knows about blacksmithing. Skills need to be kept alive and relevant and Pratt has given him an avenue to be a part of making that happen. LEARN MORE about Scott's work at

www.szlochironworks.com @PM: When did you first get

interested in blacksmithing?

SS: I first got interested during

my time at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where forge work was part of the curriculum in the metal shop. @PM: At what point did

you decide to forge a career in blacksmithing? SS: Pretty much after the first

time I tried it. As a sculptor I saw so much potential in the use of those techniques in my work. At the time I had no interest in making functional things but by getting involved in blacksmithing I learned functionality came with the job. It broadened the range of what I could produce. The reality is if you get hooked and if you want to be good, it has to be a career. It’s the only way you can spend enough time doing it.

18

P R A T T @PM: What projects are you currently working on in your studio? SS: I've been working on multiple projects at the same house for the past year. Door hard wear, window grill and there's an outdoor chandelier in the design stage. @PM: What would you consider your dream project? SS: A bunch of commissions for sculptural work. I'd like to travel around teaching and demonstrating a bit. That would be fun. @PM: What classes do you teach at Pratt? SS: Beginning and Continuing Blacksmithing, Forging Night, Intro to the Power Hammer, Parent and Me Workshops, and I’m often the teaching artist at corporate events and art parties. @PM: What do you most enjoy about teaching? SS: I like to see people's improvement from day one to the end, and I like to watch those who continue. @PM: What do you say to students who are interested in a career in art? SS: Be ready to work your

butt off for not much money. You have to be a good designer, craftsman, business person, and marketer. Don't give up. Be honest, humble and confident.
