@pratt magazine FEB–APR 2016

Pratt Fine Arts Center has been a proud resident of the

Central Area neighborhood for nearly 40 years. We are so excited to be starting off the New Year as a contributor to the newly designated Historic Central Area Arts & Cultural District.

Some may not realize that the Central Area is an historically African-American neighborhood, a geographic area that was originally redlined, relegating African American residency to this part of the City. The African-American community developed deep roots in this neighborhood, a strong sense of community, and vibrant cultural legacy that is (in my opinion) grossly under-celebrated. As such, the Arts District is organized around three foundational pillars: Preserving an African and African-American legacy in the Central Area Sustaining and strengthening the physical identity and sense of place for cultural relevancy Establishing continued support of artistic creation, economic vibrancy, livability, affordability, desirability, and artistic vitality The Central Area is a neighborhood undergoing rapid change. The Arts District designation recognizes the cultural legacy and seeks to preserve its character, while stimulating a growing arts environment for black culture in the Central Area. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as specific plans for the Arts District continue to develop. Follow us on social media or sign up for our e-news to make sure you are in the loop. Cheers,

Steve Galatro Executive Director

INTERVIEW WITH

Andrea Ramsay BY HEATHER OLSON

“

After 15 years in technology I have officially traded my laptop for a chisel. I had the opportunity to attend the Port Townsend School of Woodworking and completed their three month intensive handtools class in April of 2015. Since then I have sought to broaden my skills even further. After spending the following summer working on projects at Pratt community wood shop, and taking a few woodturning classes, I'm currently setting up my shop at Seattle's Equinox Studios in Georgetown.

16

P R A T T

@PM: When did you get

started in woodworking? AR: I started about eight

years ago. I took my first woodworking class at Seattle Central Community College. I took a class through Pratt after that, before the wood studio existed here, at Ballard Woodworks. I learned how to make things small pieces of furniture. It was a great experience and I wanted to learn more. @PM: What projects are

you currently working on that you are excited about?

AR: In the last year I

changed my perspective on woodworking almost entirely. Initially I was working with machines, and I’ve now learned how to work with hand tools. After my time at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking I felt I re-learned woodworking, and really learned about wood instead of learning about machines. Now I’m doing woodworking with hand tools about 90% of the time. I do small commissions, record cabinets, things of that nature. I’m enjoying handmade joinery and the craftsman-

ship of this process in a whole new way. I have a studio at Equinox and that’s where I work. @PM: What artists do you

admire or find inspiring?

AR: I was drawn to wood-

working through mid-century design, that doesn’t fit into my small 1901 house. So I’m looking at ways to re-imagine things for smaller spaces. I love the mid-century chair makers and am inspired by the work of Jean Prouve, George Nakashima, Hans Wegner to name a few.
