Art and Business:
STRIKING A BALANCE On the heels of a recent award from the Puget Sound Business Journal for standout business leadership, I’ve been thinking a lot about the relationship between art and business. It’s complicated to say the least; also a bit precarious. Art stands at the precipice of popular necessity, vulnerable to even subtle economic shifts, despite its obvious position as a critical component of the human experience. But just because we are doing something that has vital cultural value, we are not exempt from an obligation to engage in sound and savvy business practices. Quite the opposite. We are challenged to accept that nothing is sacred in the economic landscape, and that a lasting relevance will require us to behave as champions of our own industry. Artists and arts organizations share a similar desire to maintain such relevance and sustainability over a long and meaningful existence. I suppose we also share certain requirements in order to achieve a lasting impact; we must stay engaged, informed, nimble; and we must apply the same business acumen that rules the global economy. For many years, the latter has at times felt uncomfortable, almost unnatural to us. But now it seems that the business world is meeting us halfway, touting creativity and innovation as the most influential economic drivers of our time. If sustainability is now more suited our inherent strengths than ever before, shouldn’t we be well-positioned to find a comfortable balance between art and business? I sure think so! I am incredibly proud that Pratt has been recognized as a leader in this regard and I hope that others in the sector will soon be honored for their similar efforts. It means a great deal for our supporters to know with certainty that when they make a donation to our programs, they do so with confidence in our ability to maximize its impact responsibly. It is an exciting time for Pratt indeed! Cheers,

Pratt Fine Arts Center’s annual Holiday Art Sale
showcases an exceptional selection of art and unique gifts made by our extended community of artists working in glass, jewelry, wood, textiles, sculpture, photography, painting, printmaking, and more. Free and open to the public, proceeds from this 10-day sale support both Pratt Fine Arts Center – the most dynamic, year-round, multi-disciplinary arts center in the Pacific Northwest – as well as our incredible roster of participating artists. The 2014 Holiday Art Sale runs from November 21 – 30 in Pratt’s spacious 2D/printmaking studios except Thanksgiving Day, November 27, when Pratt is closed. A ticketed Opening Night First Dibs Party takes place the evening of November 20. Admission is $50 per guest, and all participating artists receive complimentary admission. ARTIST ELIGIBILITY:

Chandler Woodfin is a Seattle-based painter and draftsman. Using watercolor and charcoal, she examines what it means to be human in both its personal and social contexts. She focuses on the moments in between action, the overlooked difficulties of our day-to-day existence, and tries to provide antidotes of comfort to our common ailments. Chandler received her BFA from Columbia College of Missouri, and completed a twoyear painting apprenticeship at Gage Academy of Art in Seattle. @PM: Did you always
know you wanted to be an artist?
CW: I always drew and
painted, but making the conscious choice to be an artist as a career happened in high school. I always knew, but didn’t have the courage for many reasons. I didn’t decide until I had my degree. It took a while.
@PM: What were the road-
blocks that prevented you from having the courage?
CW: I think I could say a lot of things, but it was really just me being scared. I used to say it was my family, or people putting pressure on me to be something else. I had a great education, an intellectual background, and a family of lawyers. I think it was me, being afraid to be who I was, which was different from everyone else in the family. Evaluating their goals is the best part of the class. It’s great not to give grades. People are there because they want to be there, not because they have to be. @PM: Is your exploration

teaching at Pratt - how did your work here help you grow and develop? CW: Pratt has been the first
steady teaching job I’ve had—every session I get to teach one or two classes. I’ve met such interesting people! The staff and in-

Todd and I moved to South Park, on the Duwamish River. It’s a beautiful area, but also extremely polluted. There’s a lot of poverty, homelessness, transients. If wealthier people lived there, would there still be those problems? People are working on fixing things in the area, but it’s a slowmoving train. P R A T T @PM: Your portfolio shows
an amazing diversity of work—what has changed for you in the past few years and what inspires your current work?
CW: The progression is just
from 2010. That’s not that long—I don’t show my really old, bad stuff. Have you heard about how you have to put in 10,000 hours before you really get good at something? I think I hit that mark around 2012. That’s when I started to get more confident. I could do things faster and my skills had improved. I also got pregnant that year, and had to stop using oil paint, which I’d been using my whole career, because the fumes made me sick. I started using watercolor, and I found my medium. Those two things happened at once and things fell into place.
@PM: Artists in every
medium struggle with saboteurs. These can be your own fears, or other peoples’ doubts. Do you still struggle with them, and how do you advise others to overcome them? CW: I remember living in
Colorado, waiting tables, and I broke my foot in a horseback riding accident. It was crushed, and I couldn’t work. I knew the one thing I really wanted to do was paint—I had known it all along, but I filled up the space with all these other things. I told myself that I didn’t have time; that I had to make money. It took stopping everything, losing everything, to get back on track. It was a matter of trust. I knew if I put the art first, everything else would fall into place. It took a while but when I started practicing daily, @PM: It’s great that some that’s when it clicked. It’s wonderful things happened daily practice. If you’re not that you didn’t expect.

in the studio every day, you can still be doing something at home. Find 30 minutes in the morning or 30 minutes at night. Keep the momentum going. For beginners, it’s hardest to build the momentum, and to trust that it’s going to go somewhere. You’re not wasting your time. @PM: What projects
are you currently working on that you’re most excited about? CW: I was doing abstract
work for a while, and I missed doing figures. I was trained very classically, but I think figurative work can get boring if it’s not done in a unique way. So I’ve been cutting things up and making figures that are slightly grotesque. I have fallen back in love with the figure in a totally different way. It’s dark, but it’s also playful. That’s what I’m enjoying now—things that are
CW: I know! It’s like you hit
a breaking point, and things get easier. As you’re working toward it you can doubt that it will happen. But I knew instinctually to trust it and keep going. I knew if I pressed on it would be worth it, and it totally has been. There are so many times you can quit.

work at Gage for their 25th Anniversary Show as well. My new work won’t be out until next year. I decided to give myself a full year to create. It’s a big world I’m making—there are a lot of characters and a lot of stories to be told. I’ve never given myself that long without showing work. I’m excited—I have more control, and I’m having more fun. @PM: What would you say
CW: Start working on those
10,000 hours. The sooner you get started, the easier it will be. It’s all about failure, the blank canvas, and facing your own inadequacies. Everyone feels scared. Work hard. Put the hours in. Know that you will make a bunch of crap at first, and keep going. Pratt is a really accessible place. If you want to give making art a try, this is the place to do it.
