Cover Story This month’s cover image was a Portrait entry from PPGBA’s March 2015 print competition and print of the month. The image titled “The Tramp,” was created by Wayne Miller. Wayne tells us, “The Tramp” image was captured at the WSA (Western Shrine Association) Clown competition June 2011 in Dublin, CA. I did portraits of all the clowns and the competition skits. I knew most of these clowns when I was President of the Livermore Shrine Alchemists Clown Unit in 1994. The Tramp was submitted to Western Regional Comp this year and after several judges debates earned a merit seal. People either love or hate (probably from a childhood encounter) clowns. Their bright costumes and antics draw attention so I decided to make the image a sepia tone. The expression of the tramp I felt told the story of a tramps life and for me made the image.”

Photoshop Tips by Jane Conner-ziser

About The Brush Tool Opacity = what % of coverage you’re going to get Flow = how fast it’s going to apply When you want to have the ability to build color up gradually to an unknown opacity, you want “full airbrush”. Opacity # is 100%, Flow # is low, maybe 10—20%. Color continues to flow to 100% as you hold down the stylus. The speed of application depends on the number you choose for flow. When you want to apply color lightly and evenly over a large area, you need control of the opacity in order to prevent blotches. Opacity is set to the desired end amount of color; flow is set between 50-100%. As long as you hold down the stylus, you will not exceed the opacity #. Release and apply again for more color.

July 2015

Brush Size For dodge, burn and neutralization, duplicate the background and work on the background copy (these purposes need pixels to alter). The brush size should be smaller than the area you want to work on, but as large as possible to ensure smooth application. The brush icon represents where a soft edged brush reaches 50% opacity – the effect actually exceeds the perimeter of the brush icon. For opaque painting, apply color to a new layer, not directly on the background file. Use brushes that are larger than needed and remove the over spray with the eraser. This allows a smooth covering of color and the ability to shape the paint and provide a variety of edges. Small erasers make sharp edges; large erasers make soft edges.

The Bulletin

8

Application Tips For dodging, burning and neutralization: Contour the stroke to fit the shapes you are working on. It’s kind of like coloring inside the lines. Start by diffusing the sharpness of the edges and gently fill in to the center. The edge is everything when it comes to making your work look smooth. The stylus allows you to use pressure to get more or less from the effect. For painting: Puff the paint on a new layer with short, delicate “huffs” as if you were using a traditional airbrush. Contour the paint with the shapes of the subject you are painting. Use slightly more paint than you need so you can see it easily for shaping. Reduce the layer opacity when finished to desired effect.

The Color Windows I keep the color window and the swatch windows open when I am doing photo retouching and enhancement. I view the color slider bars in Hue/Saturation/Brightness (HSB). The default is RGB. Change the view by selecting HSB from the menu under the more options arrow in the upper right corner of the color window. Using color from the image Set the option for the eyedropper tool to either 3 or 5 pixels for more accurate photographic selections. Option (Alt) click on the image to select the color. I rarely use color straight from the image as I want my paint to be somewhat transparent, meaning that I want to reduce the paint layer opacity when I’m finished so I can somewhat see through the paint. To go lighter: Select the color from the image. Use the Brightness slider bar in the color window to lighten the color (a good average is halfway between where it is and white). Use the Saturation slider bar to slightly raise the saturation. To go darker: Select the color from the image. Use the Brightness slider bar in the color window to darken the color (a good average is halfway between where it is and black). Use the Saturation slider bar to slightly raise the saturation. To go brighter, duller or towards another color; Select the color from the image. Use the Hue slider bar to nudge the color towards a neighboring hue. Use the Saturation slider to brighten or dull the color.

July 2015

Using the Swatch window You can simply click on a swatch color to select it. Once selected, you can go to the Color Window to alter the Hue, Saturation and Brightness as desired. I use this a lot for quick selections and find that the swatch colors are usually too intense for photography and I often decrease saturation in order to make them usable. Saving Colors Once you choose or make a color you want to keep and use often you can add it to your Swatches by clicking into the empty boxes at the end of the color palette. To ensure you don’t lose it if you crash, choose save swatches from the menu under the more options arrow at the upper right corner of the swatch window. I save mine in my Photoshop program. Sharing Colors You can save swatch windows to a CD or ZIP and load them on another computer by inserting the disk and choosing Load Swatches from the menu under the more options arrow on the right upper corner of the swatch window. (Photoshop is open). Once the colors are loaded, choose Save Swatches and save them onto the new computer.

Proposed Bylaws Amendments As per legal requirements, PPGBA must publish any suggested changes to the Bylaws a minimum of 21 days prior to the vote. This information below has also been emailed to members on May 28. The bylaws vote will take place at the AUGUST 20 (changed from July 16) monthly meeting, to give members ample time to consider this issue.. Below please find two amendments to the Bylaws as recommended by the PPGBA Board of Directors. Justification is as follows: when the PPGBA membership count was 200 and greater, maintaining a board of director size of 12 persons was achievable, although somewhat difficult over the past 10 years or so with a societal decrease in volunteerism overall. Now that our membership count is smaller, a reduction from 12 to 9 board members will be better fit for our association. If the organization regrows back to our high numbers, the Bylaws can always be revised at a future date to increase the board size.
