A WALK THROUGH POWER ELECTRONICS

Power Electronics celebrated its 25th anniversary last month. It has been a long and stimulating way, since everything started in a tiny ground floor in the city of Valencia. A way plenty of many outstanding milestones but also a few disappointments, a vigorous experience shared with its employees, clients and suppliers. A time in which, Power Electronics has taken giant steps to become a company with global horizons.

Amadeo Salvo, General Manager of Power Electronics, explains the beginnings of the philosophy of the company:

SERVICE, SERVICE AND SERVICE Amadeo Salvo explains why Power Electronics made a strategic decision to develop a customer oriented strategy: “At that time we were like a drop of water in a bucket, competing with huge multinational companies, some of them established in Spain for more than hundred years. As a young and small company we needed to increase the added value of our product portfolio and we concluded that offering better lead times without compromising quality, free commissioning, customer support on site at any time and long guarantee issues would make the difference”. Power Electronics overcame many years ago the drawbacks arising from a small size company, however the principles continue to be still valid 25 years later: “we now compete with the same multinational companies but on a global basis and we have implemented the same strategy in all our subsidiaries. In all these years we have learned that worldwide markets share common features. All of them value so much service, especially among high demanding applications, which are our major strength”. INTERNATIONALIZATION: REPLACING IMPORTS BY OWN-DEVELOPED PRODUCTS At the end of the nineties, Power Electronics had already managed to position the brand at the top segment of the Spanish market. The company not only sold high end drives and soft starters but also added its remarkable service. It was time to set forth a growth strategy, which could only happen through the internationalization of the company. “We wanted to grow but that would only happen if we made it across the borders and we had a burden, which hindered our

Amadeo Salvo explains how Power Electronics took a double decision: “On one side, the company created its own R&D and Production departments. On the other side, it started looking at European markets. We knew that both strategies fed one another. We could not approach the international markets without our own drives and softstarters but we could not either face such a high cost in product development without widening our markets. Time has shown that we were right. If we had not internationalized the company, the current crisis would have swallowed

VERTICAL INTEGRATION: FASTER RESPONSE AND TAILOR MADE SOLUTIONS Customer care has always been the core of any strategy implemented by Power Electronics. The need for an improvement of the lead times while supplying customized solutions to cover the specific needs of our clients led Power Electronics to deepen in a Vertical Integration business model. “When we started

There is still a long path to go and Power Electronics wants to walk it hand in hand with its clients. “We do not know what the future will bring but we know what we want to become. NEW FREESUN HET

A light and flexible utility-scale medium voltage solar inverter solution Freesun HET is the new Power Electronics Medium Voltage central solar inverter solution, ready to be easily transported as a standard load in marine vessels or platforms in road transports and installed in any utility-scale solar park worldwide.

It is a standard solution suitable for any market, which requires low installation costs and an almost inexistent maintenance throughout the whole service life of the solar inverter.

A FLEXIBLE SOLUTION

VERY LOW MAINTENANCE

All the features, which make our HE FREESUN series a unique solar inverter, are to be found in a 40” High Cube container enclosure (12.032mm W x 2.352 mm D x 2.698 mm H). It is a very light and flexible solution as slightly reduces the total weight whilst offers much more room for tailormade solutions. Besides the solar inverter, a dry transformer (especially suitable for PV solar applications) and medium voltage cells, the room inside the container can be customized with whatever protection cabinets (General AC onload disconnector and fuses, DC General fuses…). Furthermore the 12 meters enclosure allows the integration of solar inverters up to 1.6MW in a single power station.

This new enclosure has been designed under the strictest mechanical, electrical and seismic standards and has also been tested again vibrations and shocks cause during the sea transport. The enclosure is thermally isolated from external environmental conditions by a sandwich panel of 5cm. HET FREESUN also minimizes the maintenance costs. The enclosure is treated with a special painting very effective against humidity and corrosion. The paint is guaranteed for a time frame of 10 years and the iron structure for a time period of 20 years with no additional maintenance. Furthermore this solution keeps a turnkey philosophy, a plug-in solution. The installation on site is really easy and only a flat concrete floor to keep the container stable and allow the cable connections is needed. The EPC only needs to care about unloading and plug-in, that’s it.

VENTILATION SYSTEM

TRANSPORT

The efficient cooling system enables the solar inverter to operate without any derating up to 50ºC due to its oversized IGBT’S and its mechanical design. Moreover, both the air intake and outtake are placed at the back side of the solar inverter and this, in turn, is placed against the left side of the container. Therefore, the hot airflow coming from the solar inverter never gets into the room but is directly expelled through the outside. This in and out air circulation facilitates that the inside room keeps cooler, as the temperature increase inside due to the normal operation of the solar inverter becomes a residual value compared to the solar irradiation. Heating resistors are an option in case of humid weather conditions.

HET FREESUN is really easy to transport. The 40”High Cube container is supplied with a CSC Safety Approval (Container Safety Convention), a seaworthiness certificate with enables the container to be handed over to any shipping company as a sea standard load. The seafreights are standard but also the handling at seaports and inland transport until the PV plant, which results in a dramatic drop of the transport costs of a turnkey solution as Freesun HET solar inverter is.

PV panels are directly connected to the SD700SP which, in turm, feeds the drive’s DC bus with direct current. The inverter bridge performance or the well known motor features of the SD700 will not be altered, thus motor and drive will work without restrictions (start ramp control, speed variation, motor protections, pump protections ...).

SD700SP is an energy saving solution which helps to slightly drop the costs on the monthly electricity bill, together with a low investment and high features thanks to SD700’s safety and control.

PRODUCT

SD700SP is a compact solution, which integrates protections, control and software package. This set

SD700SP is also available for self supply system, where there is no access to the public grid and all the energy delivered to the motor comes from the PV field.

The previous figure shows the system performance with a pump continuously working. During the broad daylight the energy generated by the PV panels (green area) is injected to the motor. This helps to proportionally reduce the power consumption from the grid (red line). When a cloud partially covers the panels, the drive will absorb more line power in order to keep the process invariant.

The incoming energy from the PV field will be fully injected to the motor and the remaining energy will be completed with the grid contribution. This way the application will run under rated conditions.

Energy savings are more than evident and depend on the PV rated power installed and the facilities management (motor working hours, regulation system...). Solar power is an unlimited and free power source, which can replace electricity coming from the grid, specially when the energy cost is higher. Therefore SD700SP a cost effective solution for pumping and industrial applications.

SD700 VARIABLE SPEED DRIVES IN SUNLIGHT COKING PLANT (SHANXI) By Hua Yong, General Manager of Power Electronics Beijing Co LTD “Our Variable Speed Drives are working in Sunlight Coking Plant since 2008.“ “We aim at keeping the whole process into operation in really harsh conditions, mainly due to dust and humidity.” “Power Electronics Beijing was set up in 2007. Mining and water are our main industrial. In this time we have successfully established a wide sales and technical network which covers the whole continental territory.”

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE COKING INDUSTRY IN SHANXI PROVINCE The coking production has a great share in the total industry production in Shanxi province. In fact, according to the Shanxi Province Economic and Information Technology Committee, four coking industrial parks with a total production capacity of 10 million metric tons will be established in this Chinese province to cover most of the Shanxi-based coking enterprises. High-temperature coking is the most important part of the smelting process, which consists in the intensive use of heat and a chemical reducing agent to decompose the ore, driving off other elements as gasses or slag and leaving just the metal behind. The reducing agent is commonly a source of carbon such as coke. The coke obtained by a high-temperature coking process can be the fuel and feedstock in many industrial processes such as blast furnace smelting, casting, gasification or chemical. Sunlight coking plant is a flagship company in the national independent coking industry and a ‘top ten’ company in Shanxi province coking industry. The coke annual production reached 3.3 million tons in 2011. Sunlight is well known for its environmental protection facilities and efficient production processes.

1. The power supply has wide fluctuations. The three-phase power supply comes from three orbits through three electric brushes. The brushes and orbits suffer surface oxidation as they are installed outdoor. Furthermore, the cars face a high vibration while running. So, the power supply often suffers serious voltage fluctuations, which is the primary cause of damage of the SCR in the rectifying bridge 2. The Variable Speed Drives Area is plenty of dust. Drives are rated IP54, which avoids solid elements over 1mm to come in but does not avoid dust to cover all the PCB’s and electronic components. Dust may affect the cooling system and cause short circuits. 3. Vibration, which may cause that certain mechanical components come loose. SD700 variable speed drives have been designed for such hazardous environmental conditions. On one hand, the SD700 series allows an outstanding input voltage range, which helps to minimize undesired stops and optimizes the service life of the rectifying bridge. On the other hand, our IP54 solution combined with the conformal coating of every single electronic pcb has proven to be an ideal solution for dusty environments, such those at a coking

SD700 APPLICATIONS AT SUNLIGHT COKING PLANT 1. Charging Car Traveling and charging motors of 30kw and 132kw respectively. Process requirements: The car can transfer motors from one variable speed drive to another, thus the continuous running of the whole application is ensured, even though a Variable Speed Drive is damaged. The charging motor is used for loading the coal into the coking chamber, which needs a large starting torque. SD700 series allow a start up torque of twice the rated torque. The VSD is also suitable for such high vibration applications, especially when the tamper is running and start ups and stops are frequent. 2. Pushing Car Traveling motors of 30kw. Process requirements: The Variable Speed Drive drives the car along the track to the coking chamber, then points it towards the door at low speed and drives it in. A pusher arm extracts the coke from the oven.

3. Coke-barrier car Traveling motors of 30kw. Process requirements: Coke-barrier cars run along the track beside the coke oven. They open the door of the coking chamber and lead the coke through the coke guide. 4. Coke Quenching Car Traveling motors of 30kw; Process requirements: Four motors are controlled by one Variable Speed Drive. Three different speed levels have been defined: low, medium and high. The car can stop anywhere along the track and needs a really short braking time. It can also work together with the coke-barrier car and the coke pushing car. In the process of quenching and cooling there is a lot of steam, which may affect the electrical room of the coke quenching car. Humidity is a burden for the correct operation of Variable Speed Drives in this application as they need to have a strong anticorrosion ability. Power Electronics SD700 drives have been the first choice of Sunlight Coking Plant for the last four years. A high performance and a continuous operation under demanding circumstances such us dusty and humid conditions without non-desired stops have convinced the Plant to use our SD700 drives for its coke production process.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND RECYCLING PLANT ALACANTÍ NORD OUR EXPERTISE

Power Electronics treats more than 30.000m3 per day in Alicante, Spain Alacantí Nord plant covers up to 225.000 p.e. from the municipalities of Busot, El Campello, Mutxamel, Sant Joan d’Alacant treating up to 30.000m3/day. The facilities were designed to reduce the energy consumption and the environmental impact on the surroundings. It introduces the latest architectural and engineering techniques (landscape integration, chemical deodorizing system, distributed control systems (DCS), …)

The de-odorizing system eliminates unpleasant odors produced during the pre-treatment process. In this case a chemical treatment system with two powerful exhaust fans, takes the air from the pre-treatment zones and propels it towards two tanks where acid and base solvents are sprayed in order to clean the air from substances (H2S) that cause the annoying odors. As before, V5 soft starters protect the costly exhaust fans and improve plant’s efficiency.

When the pump or the pipe are clogged, the Variable Speed Drives detect an underload at the input of the pump, therefore the underload protection warns about the pump status. The “pump unclogging function” helps to solve this fault by means of a forward and reverse impeller movement . Alacanti Nord can carry out maintenance task from the control seat without tedious cleaning seasons.

Power Electronics’ drives and soft starters are present at every single stage of the treatment cycle and are communicated through Modbus RTU serial communication with the DCS. Thus, supervision, optimization and protection are routine and simple tasks. The applications with more intensive energy consumption are the high speed turbo blowers, the chemical deodorizing system and the mud dehydrating system.

V5 soft starters allow us to protect remotely one of the highest investments within these facilities. The turbo blowers are fully protected and run with a 100% efficiency thanks to its built-in contactor

The mud dehydrating stage has a mechanical dehydrating system that achieves dense waste mud suitable for fertilizers. Mud is progressively introduced to the drum thanks to the variable speed drive of the feeder pump. Once the rated performance is achieved, the drum’s speed is adapted to the incoming mud load and waste requirements.

The de-nitrification process within the aeration stage is done by the injection of fresh air through fine bubble diffusers. The air is propelled by independent turbo blowers with a capacity up to 5300m3N/h each. These complex systems require a high investment, therefore extra protection measures as V5 soft starters are recommended. V5 soft starters with built-in bypass do not only provides a 100% efficiency, but also ensures the maximum electrical protection.

Water and mud movement is one of the most common applications within a treatment and recycling plant. Particularly, Alacantí Nord plant have multiple small pumps spread along the process and equipped with Variable Speed Drives that allow the system to monitor pump’s individual status and energy consumption, all in real time. The Plant manager can easily detect and solve pump or pipe clogging problems thanks to the built-in

GARRIGUES AMBIENTAL AUDITS POWER ELECTRONICS SOLAR INVERTERS

POWER ELECTRONICS OPENS A NEW OFFICE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM Power Electronics has just opened its first office in the United Kingdom. From an office in Islington, a borough of the city of London, we will assist all our British clients within the solar industry. 24/7 telephone and field assistance are now a reality in the United Kingdom thanks to Power Electronics. This new office is the second step taken in the British market after our exhibition at SOLAR POWER UK in October 2012. The high increase in sales this year and the sales trend expected in the British solar market in the forthcoming years make our physical presence in the market a must.

POWER ELECTRONICS GENERATES 150 ADDITIONAL MW OF CONCENTRATED SOLAR POWER Power Electronics has recently delivered three new CSP Plants in Spain (Arenales, Solaben I and VI and Villena) of 50MW each one, which incorporate parabolic trough technology. All of them have gone for our SD700 Variable Speed Drive Series with own customized side-cabinet solutions. Arenales CSP plant chose our SD700 multipulse and SD700FL solutions with a customized side cabinet. Solaben I and and Villena went for a SD700 with side-cabinet driving ATEX motors. With these three new CSP plants Power Electronics has already installed in the last two years more than 1200MW of Concentrated Solar Power worldwide.

Garrigues Ambiental, the technical and consulting arm of the leading tax and legal services firm in Spain Garrigues, has recently audited the whole range of our Freesun solar inverters. The scope of this audit report includes a technical analysis of the series LVT, HE, HES and HEC manufactured by Power Electronics and a contractual analysis of the guarantee policy undertaken by the company. Within the technical analysis the following matters have also been considered: Main technical and mechanical characteristics, performance, certificates, technical references of our main suppliers, technical analysis of the production procedures, quality control and a deep performance analysis and failure rate of all the solar inverters into operation. The conclusions of the Audit Report show that Power Electronics solar inverters offer remarkable features compared to those offered by our main competitors: a wide MPPt voltage range, a higher number of CC inputs per module, a European performance higher than the average of the sector, modularity, redundancy and an operation temperature range, which is one of the highest in the market. With this Audit report, written and signed by a highly reputed company, We expect to increase the bankability of our solar products not only in Europe but also in Asia, Africa and Latin America, where the company expects to grow exponentially in the forthcoming years.

NEW DESALINATION PLANT IN CHILE Power Electronics will collaborate with Sacyr Valoriza Chile in the equipment of an exclusive desalination plant for the Mantoverde Mine (Chile). The lack of water at the Atacama desert, where Mantoverde mine is located and the tremendous needs of water during the extraction and processing of ore, have led Angloamerican Chile, one of the largest diversified mining groups to construct a desalination plant. The mine is 50km away from the desalination plant. The seawater intake pumps will be driven by our XMV660 Medium Voltage Variable Speed drives. Other pumps such as booster or internal circulation pumps will be driven by our SD700 series.

POWER ELECTRONICS CONTINUES TO GROW IN INDIA After establishing a Software Department with more than fifteen highly qualified software engineers in the South of India, Power Electronics expands its activities in the Asian country through the incorporation of a branch office. This new subsidiary will market and support all Power Electronics range of products from Mumbai, with special care to the solar industry, which is boosting after the implementation of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) is a governmental initiative. This national programaims at turning India into a global leader in Solar Energy. Ravi Sibal, a highly qualified and experienced sales engineer will be in charge of new structure.

POWER ELECTRONICS TO INSTALL 10MW CENTRAL SOLAR INVERTERS IN THE SOUTH OF ENGLAND Power Electronics will collaborate with the British EPC company PADERO SOLAER in the installation of two solar parks of 5MW each in the south of England. With these two new projects Power Electronics has already sold 60MW in the United Kingdom during 2012 and positions the brand as one of the leading suppliers of central solar inverters in the market.

POWER ELECTRONICS TURNS 25 YEARS AND CELEBRATES THE ANNIVERSARY WITH CLIENTS AND AUTHORITIES Power Electronics celebrated its 25th anniversary on the 9th of November with a series of events, which included the inauguration of our new production plant in Higueruelas (Valencia), a cocktail at the Prince Phillip Science Museum and the celebration of the motoGP Grand Prix of the Comunitat Valenciana. We had the privilege to count with the assistance of a great number of clients and local authorities. Among them, the presence of the Most Honorable President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Mr. Alberto Fabra was remarkable. INAUGURATION OF THE NEW PRODUCTION PLANT This new plant, which will enjoy a useful area of more than 10.000sqm, is a new step forward in the growth strategy of the Valencian company. Power Electronics expects to employ around 150 people before the end of the year and increase up to 300 employees in the next three years. These new facilities are absolutely essential to keep our production lead times and absorve the sales increase we expect worldwide. Power Electronics has now three Production Plants and two R and D Laboratories.

A CROWDED COCKTAIL AT THE PRINCE PHILLIP SCIENCE MUSEUM The celebrations continued with a cocktail on Saturday November the 10th in the Science Museum Pr铆ncipe Felipe, which was attended by more than 300 clients and local authorities. During the cocktail the most loyal customers, who have trusted Power Electronics since the very beginning, took the floor in turn to explain to the crowd some of the most amazing anecdotes occurred within the company in the last 25 years.

MOTOGP GRAND PRIX AND 1st POSITION AT THE CRT CATEGORY The celebrations culminated with the World Championship MotoGP Grand Prix of the Valencian Community, in which Power Electronics has closely worked with the Sponsorship of the MotoGP Power Electronics Aspar Team. It was a great event, in which we were also lucky to also celebrate the worldchampionship title of one of our racers (Aleix Espargar贸) in the CRT category. Power Electronics will heavily invest in the future. After 25 years of efforts and dedication, the company knows that success only comes through innovation, customer care and efficient work. In these 25 years Power Electronics has become a multinational company with more than 500 employees worldwide and expects to continue to employ new staff and contribute to the technological and industrial background of our land.

POWER ELECTRONICS ASPAR TEAM, 2012 CRT WORLD CHAMPIONS The MOTOGP World Championship came to an end with the celebration of the last Grand Prix of the year at the Ricardo Tormo circuit of Cheste (Valencia-Spain). The passion for Motorbikes in Spain and the great number of Spanish racers competing in all categories make this Grand Prix an incomparable Show. The final results for the POWER ELECTRONICS ASPAR TEAM have been stunning with both racers (Aleix Espargaró and Randy de Puniet) fighting each other during the whole Championship for the first position of the CRT category, a new category which goes for equality within all contenders, technological innovation and a better spectacle. Finally Aleix beat Randy and both occupied the first two podium positions. We would like to take this opportunity to thank both of them for their remarkable performance this year and extend it to the whole. The results of this first year in the CRT category for the POWER ELECTRONICS ASPAR TEAM have gone far beyond our expectations. Both racers won their CRT category in 14 out of 18 Grand Prix. Furthermore they entered the “top ten” seven times and set the fastest lap within the CRT category in 17 Grand Prix. We had not even imagined these results in our most optimistic dreams… Power Electronics will continue to support the POWER ELECTRONICS ASPAR TEAM in the forthcoming editions of the World Championship. We, as a technological company, are really proud to help and collaborate with local companies, who share our efforts to innovate and improve. It is also part of our strategy to support our land’s amateur and professional sport, which already includes amateur football and professional basketball teams.
