The Potomack Company – February 2, 2019 Available Lots 100 PAIR OF SEVRES PARCEL-GILT BISCUIT PORCELAIN WINGED LIONS CARRYING PIERCED BASKETS ON TOLE PLINTHS, EARLY 19TH CENTURY incised on the base of one basket "ch // 25-5 // 2 " and "g // 242 //2" on the second basket (see Tamara Preaud, 1997 the mark "ch" identifies Mathias Chanou (1819-1820) p. 358 fn 3. The winged lion along with a lioness was designed by Alexandre-Evariste Fragonard in 1817 (see Fragonard's watercolor: inv. no. D-6 1817 no. 1 and no. 2). The lion was to be part of an elaborate dessert service. One of the Brachard brothers, either Jean-CharlesNicholas Brachard l'aîné or his younger brother Jean-Nicholas Alexandre Brachard, both at Sèvres made Fragonard's fantasy into porcelain form a few years later. It would appear that only the lion model was put into production as no lionesses are recorded. Sèvres has both Fragonard's drawings and a plaster model of Brachard's sculpture. Tamara Préaud records several examples of this model in the Sèvres sales inventories, see p. 223 no. 44 a; p. 358, pl. 143, a, b for an illustration of two lions. The first examples of this model are recorded in the Sèvres sales inventories on 26 December, 1818, and were exhibited in the Louvre on 1 January, 1819. They were subsequently delivered on 2 February, 1820, to Monsieur le Chevalier de La Malle conseiller d'État Membre du comité du contentieux. A further single example was sent to the salesroom on 1 July, 1820, and was subsequently delivered to M. Destouches, 'préfet' on 2 June, 1820; the next two examples reached the sales inventories on 30 May, 1823, and were delivered to the Garde-Meuble on 10 June, 1824. Further recorded salesroom entries are dated 1845 and 1849. The price of the earliest example was 290 francs with little subsequent variation. Examples of this model that have appeared at auction include the single example sold twice by Sotheby's, once in London on 23 June 1992, lot 201, and again in New York on 22 October 1995, lot 331. A pair illustrated by Tamara Préaud, Ibid., 1997, p. 358, nos. 143 a & b, were subsequently sold at Christie's in New York on 19 October 2007, lot 364 and another pair sold at Christie's in New York on 26 November 2013, lot 355. A single example is retained in the Ministry of Foreign Affaires in Paris and is illustrated by Tamara Préaud and Marcelle Brunet, Sèvres des origines à nos jours, Fribourg, 1978, p. 291, no. 354. 105 LOUIS XVI STYLE ORMOLU MOUNTED THUYA CENTER TABLE, LATE 19TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY BY MAISON MILLET the circular inset verdi antico ormolu top with leaf-tip molded edge and conforming frieze above four incurved vented ormolu supports headed by ram's mask and terminating on paw feet on an incurved quadripartite plinth with similarly ormolu molded edge; Established by T. Millet in 1853, the Maison Millet operated until 1902 from premises at 11, rue Jacques-Coeur, Paris, before relocating to 23, boulevard Beaumarchais. Specializing in 'meubles et bronzes d'art, genre ancien et moderne', with the accent on Louis XVI antecedents, Maison Millet was awarded medals at many of the late 19th Century Universal Exhibitions and, in 1902, was authorized by the director of the Palais de Versailles to replicate MarieAntoinette's celebrated Grand cabinet à bijoux. An auction of the firm's inventory was held in 1906, and they finally ceased trading in 1918. 107 LOUIS XIV STYLE ORMOLU AND BRASS INLAID SIDE CABINET, BY HENRY DASSON, DATED 1877, IN THE MANNER OF ANDRE-CHARLES BOULLE the shaped rectangular verdi antico marble top above a deep cove molding and a conforming case applied with finely cast corner mounts and paneling, the top front corner mounted inscribed henry Dasson1877 and fitted with three doors, the central door applied with figures of Aspasia and Socrates on a similarly mounted conforming plinth centering a mask on canted paw feet and centering a pair of twin cloven feet, the front corner mounts inscribed verso HPRD; Henry Dasson (d. 1896) is recorded as having worked in Paris at 106, rue Vieilledu-Temple. Dasson specialized in reproducing a wide range of furniture and objets d'art of high quality in the style of Louis XIV, XV and XVI, often directly copying known pieces. He purchased the firm of the ébéniste Charles Winckelsen upon his death in 1870, and produced an impressive range of pieces for the Paris Expositions from 1878 until 1895. The firm's output was distinguished particularly by the fine quality of its ormolu mounts. The business continued until 1894, when a sale of remaining stock was held (see D. The Potomack Company – February 2, 2019 Available Lots 108 LOUIS XVI STYLE ORMOLU MOUNTED MAHOGANY REGULATOR CLOCK, BY FRANCOIS LINKE, INDEX #852, THE DIAL SIGNED BERTHOILD A PARIS, CIRCA 1900, AFTER A MODEL BY JEANHENRI RIESENER the circular enameled dial with Roman and Arabic numerals signed Berthoild in a conforming case encompassed by billowing ormolu clouds applied with putti over a chamfered rectangular tapering case applied with foliate scrolls and trailing vines centering a sun ray mask and fitted with a door on canted paw feet over a conforming similarly mounted plinth on toupie feet; inscribed on right hand side moulding mount F Linke, lockplate inscribed CT Linke Serrurerie Paris; François Linke (1855-1946) was undoubtedly the most important cabinetmaker in Paris at that time. As an apprentice from his hometown of Pankraz in Bohemia, Linke arrived in Paris in 1875 and founded his own studio in 1881 at 170 rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, later creating an atelier at 26 place Vendôme. Linke's international reputation was already well established when the 1900 World's Fair was held in Paris, his talent and creativity remaining unparalleled: the Exposition crowned his success and strengthened the financial stability of his company, allowing him to conquer new markets abroad. Like his contemporaries such as Zwiener and Dasson, his production included copies and pastiches inspired by the successive styles of the eighteenth century or the most famous royal furniture, but was also illustrated in the design of exuberant works, mixing Louis XV style and Art Nouveau. Linke collaborated with a famous sculptor, Leon Messagé. In 1904 he became an Officer of Public Instruction, and participated in the Exposition of St. Louis in the United States. In 1905, he was appointed juror of the Liège Exhibition and, on October 11, 1906, received the Legion of Honor. The present régulateur de parquet is a copy of the model attributed to Jean-Henri Riesener (reçu Maître en 1768), executed in 1785, and now in the permanent collection of the Musée du Louvre. This was one of the most popular of the eighteenth century models admired and copied by the finest cabinetmakers of the late nineteenth century. Interestingly, a barometer version of the clock, also in the Louvre, was made by the cabinetmaker Guillaume Grohé circa 1860, whose work was described at the 1867 Exposition Universelle as 'supéieurs à ceux de Riesener et Gouthière'. 109 PAIR OF LOUIS XV STYLE ORMOLU MOUNTED COMMODES, BY FRANCOIS LINKE, MOUNTS BY LEON MESSAGE, INDEX #617, CIRCA 1900 both with a serpentine molded rectangular violet and ochre marble top above a bombe case fitted with two drawers mounted overall with finely cast pulls incorporating wings, foliate scrolling framing and S-scrolling corner mounts, the apron mounted with a shell issuing leaf tips on splayed tapering legs applied with foliate scrolling sabots; Léon Messagé was a gifted Parisian sculptor and was responsible for much of the design and creative work for Roux et Brunet of Paris, of whom one brother, Alexandre Roux had established a highly successful business in New York as early as 1836. Subsequently Messagé designed for Zwiener in the 1880s and from circa 1895, for François Linke. It might be argued that without Messagé's creativity, Linke would have remained a fine cabinetmaker selling to local clients and dealers and may never have reached out so successfully to the world stage. His Croquis & Dessins, Style Louis XV, Bronzes, Orfêvrerie, Décoration, Meubles was first published by the sculptor himself, from his Paris address of 40, rue Sedaine (undated). There were five sections with an elaborate title page surmounted by the sculptor's cipher or talisman of a wing, a play on his own name as the messenger to the Gods, a feature he incorporated many times on the mounts he designed for his patron and seen on the offered lot just below the knee mounts. The interesting and conclusive connection between the three masters, Léon Messagé, Joseph-Emanuel Zwiener and François Linke can be seen in a black and white photograph of Messagé's workplace, illustrated C. Framed; lower left signed: Childe Hassam; Painted upon his return from Paris in 1889 where he discovered the works of the French Impressionists. Childe Hassam illustrates a scene from the heart of Manhattan, a squatter’s shanty, possibly Blind Tom Foley's at Madison and 77th Street, flanked by brownstones and a modern building, with goats in the foreground. Shanties in New York City were well documented from the 19th and into the 20th century. Examples of these dwellings are depicted in the photographs of Jacob A. Riis. An 1858 classified ad states: “For Sale: A young goat, newly kidded…Inquire in 44th Street, third shanty from Third Avenue on the hill.” Recently discovered, this work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Hassam’s work in preparation by Stuart P. Bound in contemporary half sheep and marbled boards, rebacked. Twelve consecutive monthly issues, plus Supplement, including August, which contains perhaps the earliest British Printing of the Declaration of Independence. The Volume covers the major events of the American Revolution, with documents, plates, and maps. There are fourteen maps and plates, in accordance with the Directions for Placing the Plates. Those of greatest interest are a Map of the Discoveries of Captain Cook, a Map of the "Country around New York and Philadelphia", Long Island, Connecticut and Rhode Island, and a Map "of the Progress of his Majesty's Armies in New York, &c." The Gentleman's Magazine faithfully chronicled the dispute between the Colonies and the Mother Country during the crucial year of 1776. Urban's Preface provides the highlights, including: Burke's Speech on Conciliation with the Colonies, Privateering, Lord North's "proposition for Accommodation," General Lee's Letter to Burgoyne, a review of Dr. Price's Observations on the Nature of Civil Liberty, Parliamentary Debates, Accounts of conflicts in the Colonies and Canada.
