German Postgraduate studies in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities

Develop your research expertise at a leading centre for German Studies, whose international programmes will enhance your career prospects.

Ranked the best German department in London and second in the country, we provide a friendly, supportive and intellectually rigorous base for our postgraduate students. WHY STUDY WITH US?

• Our MRes in German and

Comparative Literature offers you the opportunity to study the culture of German-speaking countries within the wider context of critical theory and European and world literature. • The breadth of the programme is unique in the UK, as students collaborate with leading Germanists and Comparatists working from the medieval era to the present day. • As a student you will be fully integrated into our lively research community and participate in fortnightly research seminars and postgraduate events both within the department and beyond. • Our international PhD networks ensure that you are working within an international framework with regular colloquia and postgraduate conferences.

• In the London context, the

research-training programme at the Institute for Modern Languages Research facilitates further crossinstitutional collaboration. • As well as dedicated graduate facilities at King’s Maughan Library, you’ll have access to exceptional resources at the British Library, Senate House Library and the Wiener Library. • With its dual emphasis on critical training and independent research, the MRes programme provides an excellent basis for PhD study and many of our students have gone on to work in German Studies in the UK and abroad.

We offer a research environment of exceptional quality with supervision by scholars of international standing across an unusually wide range of topics, from the medieval and Early Modern periods, through to contemporary culture, literature and film, as well as politics and history. ABOUT OUR RESEARCH

• We are home to a

range of distinct PhD programmes, including unique opportunities for co-supervision in the UK, Germany and France. • Our joint PhDs with the Humboldt University Berlin, the University of Stuttgart and Paris Sorbonne involve at least one year at these partner institutions, and lead to a Joint-PhD conferred by both institutions. These innovative integrated programmes offer unique opportunities for the very best PhD supervision in a pan-European context.

• In recent years, our PhD

programme has grown to become one of the largest in the UK with regular research seminars and postgraduate training. • Our links with European and International Studies, Comparative Literature, and Film Studies provide exciting opportunities for interdisciplinary research. • You will also have opportunities to undertake internships to give you experience of the academic and administrative workings of higher education, and prepare you practically for future careers.

I have found that King’s dynamic role within the European research community makes it the ideal place to pursue my research. Thanks to the College’s links with partner institutions, I have been able to conduct fieldwork in both France and Germany. I am currently pursuing archival research in Berlin and having a fantastic time! Alice, German & Film Studies PhD
