Dear Community Member, Back to school time is a natural time for everyone to embrace learning. We are pleased to deliver to you a catalog rich with opportunities to engage your mind and your body. Take advantage of this time, to register for something new or renew an old interest by taking a class through Community Enrichment. We are working to offer more academic classes geared toward adolescents and their families. Check out our new section entitled, “Academic, Life Skills & Special Interest.” Two elementary Enrichment classes are being offered immediately following the school day, as well as a variety of writing classes for middle school and high school age students. Area parents have asked for these courses, we are happy to fill the need. Back by popular demand are swim lessons! You will find our most popular class offerings again in the catalog such as yoga, dance and art. Parents of homeschoolers and preschool age children, as well as senior citizens will find opportunities for learning. We hope you find a course to enrich your life. We are pleased to introduce you to our new Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Mark Bielang. Mr. Bielang comes to Portage after more than 20 years as an instructional leader and many years in the classroom. He will be visiting our schools in September and will host a community open house this fall. Mr. Bielang plans to get to know our families, students and residents. Please help us to welcome him. Enrich your life by enrolling in a class with Portage Public Schools. Sincerely,

Sarah R. Baker Community Relations Manager

Fall Family TREK OUT

Trek Out is an outdoor fitness program with a fresh approach to total body-mind conditioning. The outdoors—the best gym in the world! This program blends the exhilaration of being outdoors in any environment, on any terrain, with traditional-style fitness exercises and innovative techniques. It is a convenient, enjoyable and accessible workout that has great appeal to a broad population: beginners to elite athletes, kids to seniors. Participants will elevate their mental and emotional powers while honing physical skills such as balance, agility, coordination, strength and endurance. Each week will take place at a different Portage Park. First class meets at Just Move before heading to Celery Flats.

This is an on-going, “hands-on” study of personal protection at home, school, and at the work place. Street-wise techniques are taught and discussed on an individual basis and are designed so that size and strength are not involved. In Grace Under Pressure, you will learn to act on stressful situations rather than being controlled by them. This is a great opportunity for mother/daughter to spend time together and learn self-protection. For ages 14 and older. Fee: $40 per individual/$80 per family.
