August 2014 Dear Community Member, On behalf of the Portage Public Schools Board of Education, I am proud to present you with the Fall 2014 Enriched for Life, Community Education offerings. The school board has been working hard to make our District the best place for students to learn and to grow in the region. We have developed a vision to help guide all of us in this important work. Portage Public Schools has adopted its vision to be: An exceptional, continuously improving learning culture, committed to all! Evidence of this vision can be found in our classrooms, in our athletic programs, on our performance stages, and in our enrichment programs throughout the District. We value our families and our community as an integral part of this vision. To create an exceptional learning environment and to be able to meet the needs of our community, we have begun a community-driven process to review our school facilities. This initiative, “Designing for the Future, will be led by a steering committee of nearly fifty parents, community, faith and business leaders, teachers and students. The steering committee will need input from you if we are to be truly successful. Please join us for a Designing for the Future Community Dialogue on one of these dates: Thursday, October 9th, 7:00 pm Northern High School Commons Thursday, November 20th, 7:00 pm Central High School Commons And of course, you are always encouraged to attend a school board meeting or to contact us directly. Our Board of Education meeting schedule and contact information for trustees and school administrators is available on our website or by calling 323-5000. Youth ACT Preparation Workshop All Squared Away L.L.C. is offering a three hour ACT Preparation Workshop to help high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors prepare to confidently take the ACT. This is done by explaining the format of the test, sharing the types of questions to expect for each section of the test, teaching general and specific test-taking strategies, giving tips for pacing during the test, explaining the rubric for the Writing Test as well as administering and correcting mini practice tests. The best way to reduce anxiety and increase confidence is to be familiar with expectations. The requirement of all juniors in MI to take the ACT as part of the Michigan Merit Exam (given in March) makes it essential that students proactively prepare. Students should bring a pencil and calculator. A manual that includes a complete practice test will be provided for inclass and home use.
