The Together as One Aboriginal Sculpture tells the story of a significant historic event and holds meaning to the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities. It depicts the heroic and sharing nature of Aboriginal people. This event occurred 189 years ago, on the 9th December 1827 and is the first recorded rescue in Australia. This translation is supported by Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Cultural Cooperative and the Local Gathang Language Group Djuyalgu Wakulda. In the morning after the Alligator had sailed and the pilot had just landed in the inner harbour, a tremendous wave upset the boat throwing the crew of 7 into the surge.

The sea ran so high that no European would venture to assist them.
Guri manday garrundjiyn gurrwaga djukalda waa burrugila maruwuygu.
Seven Aborigines coming up dashed into the surge and succeeded in gaining the boat.
Barra wayibalabiyn marrala bunagu waa wakul wayibala naray dhati.
They brought them safe on shore, one nearly exhausted.
Guri manday dhanbaan.gang wuyi.ga barayn.ga.
Nothing could exceed the bravery and humanity with which these poor blacks acted on this occasion.

As a small reward I ordered some provisions with a glass of ‘grog’.
Maathang Darling ngukala mital dharrawiralbiyn gurubiyn barranaya.
Governor Darling offered a medal to be struck for each of them and blankets and trousers supplied.

Bicentenary Program 2021 marks the 200th anniversary since the establishment of Port Macquarie as a penal settlement. Council acknowledges that this caused suffering and displacement for the traditional owners, the Birpai people. Our region’s history is as fascinating as it is diverse, spanning well beyond the 200 years, with our culture formed by our traditional owners of the land, the Birpai people, as well as early British settlers and multi-ethnic migration. Join us in a wide range of activities designed to reflect on our past, celebrate our present, and look forward to an inclusive and positive future. We are truly blessed to live in a beautiful region, enriched with such diverse history and powerful stories. I hope that our Bicentenary gives you the opportunity to come together with your community, and deepen your understanding of what makes the Port Macquarie-Hastings region as special as it is. Each of us has a unique story to share, and our program encourages you to exchange your experiences and customs with your neighbours. There’s plenty to learn from the enlightening cultural exhibitions, the exciting community-led events, and the many other activities throughout the week. A heartfelt thank you to our Bicentenary Working Group, who assisted Council Staff in making this event happen. From Prison to Paradise A (Very) Brief Timeline of European Settlement in Port Macquarie The Birpai people are the traditional custodians of our local country, and have been for thousands of years. The following timeline only acknowledges some of the key dates & events from a European settlement perspective.
1818
John Oxley sights the Hastings area and names Port Macquarie. Area is subsequently designated to be a penal colony.
1821
First ships, the Lady Nelson, the Mermaid and the Prince Regent, arrive carrying soldiers and convicts. Population: 102 males, including 59 convicts
1823
The Government considers Port Macquarie an excellent place for free settlement due to its climate and distance from Sydney
1825
Port Macquarie deemed ineffective as a penal settlement (partly because the prisoners kept escaping!)
1826-1828
St Thomas Church of England completed (built by convict labour with original cedar pew boxes still standing).
1830
Port Macquarie was proclaimed open to free settlement
1836-1845
An influx of free settlers. The town consists of 41 brick & 25 wooden houses, a Female factory, Gaol, & Prisoners barracks.
1846
Last convict establishment is closed
1862
Commercial vineyard at Douglas Vale established & Asylum opened in convict barracks
1869
New court house constructed (now the Historic Court House on Clarence St)
1879
Tacking Point Lighthouse erected
1887
New Royal Hotel opens (still standing on Town Green)
1937
Ritz Theatre Opened (now Majestic Theatre on Clarence St)

Our once sleepy holiday town is now a thriving regional city (and with a population approaching 90,000, is one of the fastest growing regional areas in Australia). We’re also one of Australia’s favourite holiday towns, so from a European settlement perspective, it really has been from ‘Prison to Paradise’!

WAKULDA
WEAVING OUR STORIES AS ONE
Over the last 18 months, the Port Macquarie-Hastings local government area, like most regional destinations in NSW, has felt the effects of devastating drought, bushfires and now COVID-19. In 2020, Council secured funding for a number of projects to support local tourism and hospitality jobs, stimulate our economy and attract visitation to our region.
Acknowledgement of support as an identified COVID Recovery Project. Funded by the Australian Government under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and Regional Tourism Bushfire Recovery grants program.

The centerpiece of our Bicentenary event is Wakulda, an immersive, sound and light projection installation onto the Port Macquarie Historic Courthouse. This 10-minute production will envelop the audience, telling the important stories that make up the rich history of Port Macquarie from our First Nations people right through to the current day of the Bicentenary of European settlement in April 2021. Stakeholders from a wide variety of backgrounds and groups were consulted in the development and creation of this project, including First Nations cultural consultants, artists and performers. The projection will be launched on 10 April and will continue to run nightly beyond the event period as a legacy project that will be a key new cultural tourism attraction in the heart of our CBD Cultural Precinct.
NIGHTLY PROGRAM
10-18 April, 6pm-9pm
Come and experience the latest attraction for Port Macquarie first hand. Between 6.00pm and 9.00pm each evening you can view a free screening of the Wakulda projection on the façade of the Port Macquarie Historic Courthouse on Clarence Street. A number of key heritage sites will open their doors each evening. While you’re at the Courthouse for Wakulda, head inside to discover its unique history, and view an exhibition by local artist Leanne Prussing. Drop into the Glasshouse to view themed exhibitions, then grab something for dinner and wander along the Town Green promenade to watch visiting boats on the river. Enjoy some local musical talent playing from Little Shack. Visit the fascinating Port Macquarie Museum which is also keeping its doors open till late, as well as the Maritime Museum Pilot Boat Shed. 5

The Coral Trekker is a 23-metre, square rigged, wooden tall ship sailing up to Port Macquarie and will be moored at Lady Nelson Wharf, located at the end of the Horton Street on Town Green. Lunch Cruise

PLEASE NOTE: POSTPONED DUE TO FLOODS Yapang Bila Yapun.yapun is the Birpai name given to the new Wauchope Bicentenary Riverside Sculptural Trail, set on the Hastings River, winding its way along Rocks Ferry Reserve. A selection of public artworks showcase the rich history of Wauchope and the surrounding hinterland, covering themes of history, culture, agriculture and Aboriginal heritage. Only a short 15 minute drive from Port Macquarie CBD, this idyllic foreshore location provides the perfect setting for the creative interpretations by local and engaged artists.

Port Macquarie 200 Exhibition 27 February - 18 April Mezzanine Gallery Port Macquarie 200 profiles the contributions of seven artists who chose Port Macquarie as their subject during the course of two centuries. This is a historical journey, as much for the Australian European-style of art itself, as it is for the township. Special inclusions are the very earliest artworks of Port Macquarie, a selection of sketches by the inspirational female figure Eirene Mort, and a series of previously unseen vibrant watercolours painted by Sir Lionel Lindsay in 1916.
