BOSTON

PUBLIC LIBRARY

Platinum Weddings takes you on an unsurpassed look inside the Boston Public Library and the McKim building showcasing one of the most luxurious historic venues in Boston’s Back Bay to host your event. Founded in 1848, by an act of the Great and General Court of Massachusetts, the Boston Public Library (BPL) was the first municipal library in the United States open free to the public. The present Copley Square location has been home to the Library since 1895, when architect Charles Follen McKim completed his “palace for the people.” In 1972 the Library expanded its Copley Square location with the opening of an addition designed by Philip Johnson.

Bates Hall

Acknowledged by many to be architecturally one of the most important rooms in the world, Bates Hall features a majestic barrelarched ceiling enclosed by half domes on each end, English oak bookcases, busts of eminent authors and Bostonians, and a richly carved limestone balcony. The hall, located on the second floor of the McKim building, is named in honor of Joshua Bates, a London merchant banker born in Weymouth, MA, who in 1852 gave the Library $50,000 for the purchase of books.

The Courtyard

As you step off onto the balcony, you feel the cares of the modern world slip away and the enriched old world feel set in as you overlook its’ luxuriant Italian-style landscape beauty. Embellished through an enchanting garden, bronze cast ornate statue and fountain designed by Frederick MacMonnies’ “Bacchante and Infant Faun,” the Boston Public Library is surely one of the most beautiful and breathtaking outdoor locations in Boston’s Back Bay. The historic Boston Public Library and The Catered Affair join together to showcase the exquisite setting of one of America’s most definitive landmarks, complemented by prestigious event planning and orchestration capabilities of New England’s acclaimed special event caterer. With over thirty years of dedication and passion this allows The Catered Affair and The Boston Public Library to develop a unique and memorable event.

The Courtyard Restaurant The Map Room Café

and

Two restaurants, operated by The Catered Affair, offer library visitors a unique dining experience and showcase the BPL as one of Boston’s most inviting destinations. The restaurants are located on the first floor of the McKim building and overlooks the Boston Public Library Italianate courtyard. The Map Room Café is housed in the former map room of the library.

The Popular Reading Room

The Library’s most popular space for weddings, the Popular Reading Room looks out onto Copley Square and the Old South Church. The room features an ornate architectural vaulted ceiling with interlocking Guastavino terra cotta tiles and a distinct bookcase-lined mezzanine on two sides.

The Abbey Room

Murals titled the “Quest of the Holy Grail,” by American artist, Edwin Austin Abbey, grace the walls of the Abbey Room on the second floor of the McKim building. The murals are composed of a series of 15 panels featuring 150 lifesized figures illustrating the Arthurian legend. The room also features a beautiful fireplace of French rouge antique marble, dark oak wainscoting, and a beamed ceiling modeled after one in the library of the Doge’s Palace in Venice. The Abbey Room is popularly used for dancing, ceremonies and formal dining, and features a stunning outdoor balcony overlooking the cloistered courtyard, perfect for any outdoor reception. The Sargent Gallery

Located on the 3rd floor are spectacular murals painted by John Singer Sargent. The theme of this unusual series is the development of world religions. Sargent considered this effort to be his most important work. Distinctly different from his well-known portraits of distinguished Americans and Europeans and his delicate landscapes, Sargent painted in the style of Italian Renaissance frescos by incorporating the architectural detail of the building into the work.

The Entrance Hall

The low, broad entrance hall, divided into three aisles by heavy piers of Iowa sandstone, is of Roman design. The ceiling is vaulted, with domes in the side bays, and is covered with a marble mosaic. The thirty names lettered in the ceiling are of famous Bostonians. The floor is of white Georgia marble and is inlaid in the center aisle with brass inscriptions and symbols of the zodiac.

The Chavannes Gallery

Painted by the renowned French artist Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, the murals adorn the walls of the McKim building’s grand staircase and second floor gallery. The central mural depicts “The Muses of Inspiration Hail the Spirit of Light.” Eight stairway murals representing the main disciplines of poetry, philosophy, and science complete this allegorical cycle.

The Main Staircase

Connecting the Entrance Hall with the Main Staircase is a deep triumphal arch. The marble of the steps is ivory gray Echaillon, mottled with fossil shells; that of the walls is a richly variegated yellow Siena. The great twin lions, couchant, on pedestals at the turn of the stairs are of unpolished Siena marble and are the work of Louis St. Gaudens. They are memorials to Massachusetts Civil War infantry regiments, the Second and the Twentieth. Whether you are hosting an elaborate wedding reception or an informal social gathering, experience the world-class service expected at this spectacular historical landmark.
