Learning by doing


Outokumpu town is situated in Eastern Finland, about 500 km from Helsinki, between Joensuu and Kuopio. At the beginning of 20th century Outokumpu was a small village, but the discovery of copper ore in 1910 started the industrial development. The mining operations were closed in 1989, but because of its Old mine Outokumpu is still well-known in Finland.


NORTH KARELIA COLLEGE OUTOKUMPU

North Karelia College Outokumpu is one of the eight colleges of the North Karelia Municipal Education and Training Consortium. The college offers versatile education for both young people and adults. Vocational qualifications require three years of studying and have the scope of 120 study credits.

Part of the North Karelia Municipal Education and Training Consortium The Municipal Education and Training Consortium is an education and development organisation owned by the municipalities of the province of North Karelia. North Karelia municipal education and training consortium´s main function is to provide qualified vocational education in the province of North Karelia. The mission of the North Karelia Municipal Education and Training Consortium is to develop vocational expertise for the benefit of North Karelia, taking both the working life and the individual into consideration. North Karelia College Outokumpu is the third biggest college of all the colleges belonging to North Karelia Municipal Education and Training Consortium.



Vocational education

The purpose of vocational training is that students can rely on their competence to cope with the wide range of tasks in their field, to find a job in the increasingly competitive labour market and to qualify for further studies.

Did You know? All degrees include 20 credits of on-the-job-learning which means that students carry out studies at a work place “in real life�. It is also possible to accomplish on-the-job-learning abroad.



Study programmes: Cultural sector

Visual Artisan Artisan - Crafts and design Dancer Audiovisual Communication - Media Assistant Audiovisual Communication is divided into work life based vocational fields that are Theater and Event Technology Radio and TV production Photography and Graphic Design Game Development Sound Production Audiovisual Communication studies include the knowledge and skills of the chosen vocational field as well as the basic skills on different areas of com6munication. The basic knowledge of the field includes, depending on the vocational field, drama, visual expression, information technology, photography and photoshop, cultural studies, professional English and video technology. We also offer The International Baccalaureate (IB) Career-related Certificate (IBCC) studies.



Study programmes: Technology sector

Machinist Machinists work mainly in metal, plastic or electricity industry manufacturing tools and products. ICT-assembler The education consists of different studies in electronics and in information and communication technology.

Did You know? The metal industry makes up for about a third of Finland’s industrial production. Automation is increasing rapidly in the field and the newest technology has become part of machining. Programmable machine tools, robots and automatic production systems have changed the image of the work. It is now safe, light and clean compared to a traditional workshop. At the same time the work duties have become more varied and challenging.



Study programmes: Health and services sector

Practical nurse 
 The work of a practical nurse includes providing basic care for people, promoting health and supporting growth and rehabilitation. The emphasis of the work is on caring for people and thus good communication skills are necessary. Possible work places for practical nurses include day nurseries, home services, work-activity centers, service flats, homes for the elderly, hospital wards and different facilities for people with intellectual disabilities. At first students complete vocational basic studies, which are Support and guidance of growth , Nursing and Care and Support of rehabilitation. After completing the basic studies, the students choose one of the following study programmes • Children´s and Youth Care and Education • Care for the Disabled • Mental Health and Substance Abuse Welfare Work • Nursing and Care



Students and teachers

In North Karelia College Outokumpu there are approximately 560 students from all over Finland. The students are looked after by a staff of about 60 full time employees and several guest lecturers.



International North Karelia College Outokumpu

One of the emphasis in North Karelia College Outokumpu´s education is internationalisation. Our aim is to provide students with knowledge and skills that enable them to succeed and competitively perform in international environments. Our college has wide experience in mobility projects and Global education projects: Kamoon China, Hanako, India network etc. Every year our college sends abroad students and staff members and receives international students who perform their work-based learning period in Finland. The duration of these periods is usually from 2 to 8 weeks. We have partner schools and work-based learning places all over Europe and outside Europe.
