esulta imposible percibir el crecimiento de Omaha y su comunidad aledaña sin la existencia de uno de los medios de comunicación más importantes con el cual se cuenta desde hace 15 años, ya que su presencia esta vigente en un sector poblacional que les han adoptado como parte de su vida diaria, siendo la primer estación de radio en español que surgió en el Midwest de los Estados Undios, a la que hoy se le conoce como: Radio Lobo 97.7 FM. Este es un hecho importante al considerar que Radio Lobo ha logrado una gran penetración en la comunidad a la que se dirige, ofreciendo una señal prácticamente al alcance de cualquier persona. Su historia se remonta al año 1999, cuándo Jim McKernan, el entonces gerente general de Journal Broadcast Group en Omaha, identificó la creciente población hispana como una posible oportunidad comercial. Fue entonces que decidió comenzar un formato en español, en KBBX-1420 AM., logrando una inmediata respuesta positiva del radioescucha. En su siguiente paso requirió la ayuda de Lori Ecklebe, solicitándole que intentara vender publicidad en español a las empresas locales, para servirles y al mismo tiempo para proporcionar ingresos que cubrieran los gastos de la estación. Favorablemente, en pocas semanas, Lori generó un importante apoyo de anunciantes. De esta forma, la semilla fue plantada con la visión empresarial de Jim McKernan y las habilidades de desarrollo empresarial de Lori Ecklebe, germinando un producto de comunicación al cual se fueron sumando cada vez más personas que, de una u otra forma, colaboraron a la consolidación de lo que hoy representa Radio Lobo 97.7 FM Actualmente, podemos notar cambios importantes en comparación con el pasado. Comenzando con que abandonaron la frecuencia 1420 AM, por 97.7 FM, en mayo del 2003. Otro de ellos ocurrió en la misma fecha, al tomar el control de la programación que habría de trasmitirse, lo cual ocurre hasta el día de hoy. Su personal se ha incrementado. Ahora tienen 11 empleados a tiempo completo y 4 a tiempo parcial. Y por último, son parte de Connoisseur Media. En un enfoque social y demográfico, cumplir 15 años en el Midwest de los Estados Unidos, como radiodifusora en español sustentable, con demanda y en evolución, es sinónimo del crecimiento que sigue población hispana, [porteniendo Marina laRosado] aunado al claro reflejo del espíritu empresarial que se tiene. Por otro lado, hay que destacar que incluso Radio Lobo ha logrado un nivel comunitario en el que se le considera ya un proveedor de asistencia a personas y organizaciones sin fines de lucro, a quienes les entrega donaciones en efectivo y publicidad para proyectos altruistas; aunado a múltiples campañas de donaciones a familias de escasos recursos. Para Jim Timm, gerente general desde junio del 2008, estos hechos significan un modo idóneo de poder devolverle a la comunidad el respaldo y preferencia que les han conferido, “... porque nos sentimos muy agradecidos con todo el apoyo recibido de nuestros oyentes, al igual que de nuestros anunciantes y líderes de la comunidad.”, dijo el directivo, agradeciendo también el respaldo del propietario y del director general de Connoisseur Media. En otra perspectiva, “cumplir 15 años significa también que nuestra comunidad sigue contando con Radio Lobo como su fuente principal de música, entretenimiento, noticias e información importante”, agregó Timm. Por su parte, Melissa Schoonover, directora de promociones, habló sobre su experiencia trabajando con la comunidad Latina, diciendo: “Me gusta la unidad que se ve entre la población Latina, como si se tratase de una familia. Son tres días muy largos y agotadores, que al final me llenan de gran satisfacción”. Por esta y otras razones, para Schoonover, desde hace años Radio Lobo ha venido teniendo

un papel importante para la comunidad Latina en Nebraska y Iowa, “ofreciendo también noticias locales en vivo, he información diversa para beneficio de sus radioescuchas, ya que nuestra misión es servir a nuestra comunidad en cualquier manera posible y eso es algo que me hace sentir muy orgullosa”, dijo. Actualmente, resulta imposible obtener una cifra sobre el total de radioescuchas que les sintonizan, ya que en este momento Radio Lobo no está subscrita a ningún controlador de audiencia. Sin embargo, la demanda musical permitió trasmitir 113,880 piezas musicales, tan solo en el pasado 2013, según cifras brindadas por la estación. Valentín “Tlaxcalteca” Maldonado, director de programación, indica que la emisora nunca ha cambiado de formato musical, confiriéndoseles el género regional mexicano. Por otro lado, señala también que su auditorio ha incrementado hasta incluso alcanzar a jóvenes de 12 años. “Nuestro mercado es tan grande que nos hacer sentir muy felices de atender a toda la audiencia”. Al hablar sobre su mejor experiencia trabajando con Radio Lobo, Maldonado dijo: “Todos los días vivimos experiencias diferentes, desde que abrimos el micrófono y tenemos contacto con nuestra gente. La mejor de ellas es estar aquí, presente, escuchando a las personas, intentando dia a dia darles algo diferente y ayudar al prójimo”. Sergio Robles, director de relaciones comuntarias, recalcó que la radio tiene la virtud de poder llegar hasta el último rincón de la complicada geografía que comprende la señal de radio lobo, la cual alcanza 80 millas a la redonda de su antena, ubicada en el oeste de Omaha. Resaltó también la característica que ha marcado a Radio Lobo como emisora educativa, al contar con la participación de la audiencia, organizaciones no lucrativas, gubernamentales, educativas y de entretenimiento. “La intervención de las personas que son invitadas a la cabina, no es para mí un hecho publicitario o de mercadeo: es un principio que se debe hacer con respeto, tolerancia y con la mayor claridad de cumplir con ética nuestra labor detrás de un micrófono”. Ahora bien, de forma genérica habrá que apuntar que el panorama de la radio en nuestro país es positivo. Y es que el mercado potencial para Radio Lobo y para el resto de las radiodifusoras es elevado, dado que el índice de penetración de este medio de comunicación es de 98% de la población, considerando que 98 de cada 100 habitantes cuenta con una radio cercana o un medio para escuchar señales de radio por internet, según el último censo poblacional. Se sabe que la radio es un servicio comunitario que cubre una necesidad de entretenimiento auditivo, aunado a la parte informativa, educativa y de apoyo cívico y social que dependiendo de cada persona y espectador serán los efectos. Hoy, en Iowa y Nebraska existen nuevos medios radiofónicos que brindan otras alternativas al oyente. Por ende, el hecho de que Radio Lobo cumpla 15 años, significa también que su personal debe seguir evolucionado y no puede vivir en el pasado, pues tiene la responsabilidad social de servir a un sector poblacional que constantemente demanda más y mejores formas de servicio y entretenimiento. Opinión avalada por su gerente general. Así, el futuro de Radio Lobo promete seguir evolucionado a medida que lo irá haciendo la comunidad misma. Por ello, hoy más que nunca se debe celebrar la existencia solida y creciente de Radio Lobo 97.7 FM, por su trabajo pionero como medio de comunicación radiofónica, el cual ha tenido repercusión en la vida social de Omaha, Iowa y zona de alcance, quedándoles el compromiso moral, social y ético de hacer su trabajo con responsabilidad de acción, imagen y contenido, para cumplir las expectativas de la comunidad que felizmente celebra su existencia.

CELEBRATES 15 YEARS IN THE LATINO COMMUNITY

t’s impossible to perceive the growth of Omaha and its surrounding communities without the presence of one of the most important media outlet which has existed for the last 15 years, ever present in the day to day life of a huge part of the population, as one of the first Spanish speaking radio stations in the Midwest of the United States: Radio Lobo 97.7 FM (as it is known today). It is a fact that Radio Lobo has managed to reach its target demographic within the community, offering a repertoire that anyone can enjoy. It all started back in 1999 when Jim McKernan, then General Manager of the Journal Broadcast Group at Omaha, identified the growing Latino population as a potential market. It was then that he decided to launch a Spanish station, KBBX1420 AM., securing an immediate positive reaction from listeners. His next step required the help of Lori Ecklebe, asking that she try and sell advertising space in Spanish to some of the local businesses in order to help them reach a new market while, at the same time, helping obtain the funds needed to cover the expenses for the radio station. In just a few weeks, Lori was able to secure the considerable support of several advertisers. Thanks to this, the seed planted by Jim McKernan’s entrepreneurial vision and Lori Ecklebe’s business development skills grew into a great project that continued to get more and more people on board, paving the way for the road that would lead to everything that is now part of what Radio Lobo 97.7 FM stands for. Nowadays we can notice some important changes from how things used to be. First of all, on May 2013, the 1420 AM radio frequency was abandoned and changed to 97.7 FM. Another big change occurred on the same date when programming for the station was altered for the better. The station’s staff has also increased to include 11 full time employees and 4 part-time staff members. To top things off, Radio Lobo is now part of Connoisseur Media.

[by Bernardo Montoya] On a social and demographic level, by reaching this 15 year anniversary - as a profitable Spanish radio station in the US Midwest and always on demand and evolving – we can get a better understanding of the growth of the Latino population in the area, as well as of their great economic impact on the community. We must also mention the impact Radio Lobo has on the community, where it is considered an entity that supports and helps people and nonprofit organizations, providing donations, as well as publicity spots, for altruistic projects; along with multiple charity drives for securing donations for low-income families. For Jim Timm, General Manager since 2008 (June), this is a great way of giving back to the community for all of their support “… because we feel very thankful for all the support from our listeners, as well as from all advertisers and community leaders,” he said, always thankful for the support of the owner and Senior Manager of Connoisseur Media. From another point of view “reaching this 15 year anniversary also means that our community continues to listen to Radio Lobo as their main source for their music, entertainment, news and reporting needs,” said Timm. Melissa Schoonover, Promotion Manager at Radio Lobo, talked to us about her experience working with the Latino community “I like how close the Latino community really is, as if they were all one big family. From the first moment I started working with Radio Lobo [2005], I was welcomed with open arms, and they’ve even taught me about their language, their cuisine and their culture.” “I have a lot of great memories from this job, and some of my favorites are from when we help people, such as with our radiothon to help the Children’s Miracle Network: Milagros Para Niños (Miracles for Children), on which I’ve worked for the past 5 years, and I’m always thrilled when we break the event’s record since it allows us to help more of the children in our community. It requires us to work hard over a 3 day period, but in the end it is worth it.”

Because of all of this, for Schoonover, Radio Lobo has been playing an important role in the Latino communities of Iowa and Nebraska “offering live news coverage and a wide range of information for our listeners since our goal is to serve our community as best we can, and that’s something I feel proud of,” she said. At this moment, it is impossible to get a fully accurate statistic for the total number of listeners that tune in to Radio Lobo because the station does not subscribe to any of the available ratingtracking services. However, numbers do show a huge demand by their audience, and that allowed them to broadcast over 113,880 songs in 2013 alone (according to stats provided by the station). Valentin “Tlaxcalteca” Maldonado, Programming Director at Radio Lobo, tells us that the station has never changed their music format, always focusing on regional Mexican music. He also mentions how the station’s reach has grown to include young 12-year-olds: “Our market is so big that we’re so happy to be able to cater to all audiences.” Speaking about his best experience while working at Radio Lobo, Maldonado said: “Every day brings different experiences, and from the moment that our microphones are ‘on,’ we can easily get in touch with our audience. The best thing is being here, listening to people every day, trying to bring something new to the table and trying to help others.” Sergio Robles, Community Relations Manager, emphasized how the station manages to broadcast its signal to the farthest reaches of its area, on a 80 mile radius around its antenna located near Weeping Water, NE, just south of Omaha. He mentioned that something that has defined Radio Lobo as an educational station is the involvement of their audience, as well as of several nonprofit, government, education and entertainment organizations. “The participation of the people who are invited into the booth is not done for publicity or marketing: it is done with the outmost care and

tolerance, always aiming to uphold our work ethic behind the microphone.” The outlook for radio stations as a whole in our country is very positive. Radio Lobo’s potential market - as well as that for other radio stations - is huge given that this type of media reaches 98% of all population when you consider that out of every 100 people 98 have access to a radio or to another device that allows them to listen to the radio over the internet (according to the last population census). We know that radio provides a community service that covers a need for a specific kind of entertainment while also providing useful and educational information, all while providing social and civic support, which has a different effect on each person that is listening. Today, both Iowa and Nebraska feature new radio stations that provide listeners with even more options for their entertainment needs. Therefore, the fact that Radio Lobo has now existed for over 15 years also means that its staff must continue to progress, and they shouldn’t dwell on the past for too long because it is their responsibility to serve a part of the population that constantly demands better service and entertainment, something that their General Manager is fully aware of. And thus, the future of Radio Lobo foresees a station that will continue to evolve at the same time as the community itself. Because of all of this, now more than ever we must celebrate the solid and growing work of Radio Lobo 97.7 FM, for its actions as a pioneer in radio broadcasts and for its great impact in the social life of Omaha, Iowa and the surrounding areas, always fully committed to working hard while upholding their moral, social and ethic responsibility, providing the sounds and content needed to meet the expectations of a community that happily celebrates them.

PARA LA DEROGACIÓN DE LA ORDENANZA DE FREMONT

Sabemos lo que esto hará y no hará. Sabemos que podemos esperar tener más problemas con esta ordenanza. Sabemos que nos va a costar más, sabemos que podríamos perder algunos fondos, sabemos que estamos perdiendo oportunidades,” remarcó Krista Anderson, una activista apasionada de la ciudad de Fremont y miembro de la organización Fremont Sí!. Anderson y sus colegas del grupo Fremont ¡Sí! han estado trabajando diligentemente para educar a la gente en la comunidad acerca de la Ordenanza 5165 y cómo sus disposiciones de vivienda podrán potencialmente limitar el crecimiento, la viabilidad y el desarrollo de Fremont. Una elección especial en Fremont ha sido fijada para el 11 de febrero. Residentes de Fremont tendrán la oportunidad de votar para derogar sólo la parte de alojamiento de la Ordenanza 5165. Bajo la Ordenanza 5165, se exigirá a los residentes de Fremont que obtengan un permiso de ocupación para las viviendas de la ciudad de Fremont. Los residentes que buscan un permiso estarían obligados a pagar una cuota de cinco dólares, proporcionar su nombre, dirección, fecha de nacimiento, país de nacionalidad y la dirección del lugar donde tienen la intención de vivir. “Lo importante es darse cuenta de que no se trata de una derogación de la totalidad de la ordenanza, es una revisión para sacar la parte de ella que realmente creemos que no va a tener el impacto que los redactores de la ordenanza desean que tenga ,” aclaró Michelle Knapp, una colega de Anderson del grupo Fremont Sí!. Knapp añada “la parte que in-

volucra el trabajo y el programa E-Verify ya ha sido aprobada, ya está implementada, y se está utilizando. Las provisiones de la ordenanza que involucran el tema de las viviendas son las partes que se están abordando en este momento.” Knapp señala “la idea falsa principal es que sólo los latinos tendrán que solicitar un permiso para alquilar una vivienda,” pero aclara que cualquier residente de Fremont va a “tener que conseguir un permiso y cada persona en la vivienda tiene que tener uno si tienen la edad de dieciocho años o son mayores de edad.” Los redactores de la ordenanza diseñaron la legislación para impulsar a los inmigrantes indocumentados de Fremont a huir, sino como Anderson comentó que las provisiones de la ordenanza no serán útiles para prevenir que los inmigrantes indocumentados alquilen viviendas. La ordenanza indica que “en ningún caso la Ciudad de Fremont tiene el derecho de verificar de forma independiente la situación migratoria de un extranjero,” aclaró Anderson. La activista también señaló que el Departamento de Policía de Fremont no iba a realizar trabajo federal de inmigración. “El departamento de policía no está comprobando la volatilidad de la situación de las personas. Está creando otro nivel de confusión y un paso innecesario,” dijo Anderson. Anderson indicó que “no impide que un inmigrante indocumentado alquile una vivienda. Simplemente está obligando a las residencias de ancianos que tomen un paso adicional, los terratenientes, ahora tienen que hacer eso, tienen que juntar el papeleo, mantener el papeleo en un archivo, si alguien les cuestiona puedan ser llevados

a un tribunal, podrían enfrentarse a una multa de $100 por día.” Anderson también mencionó que el permiso tiene que ser específico para el lugar que uno desea alquiler. “No puedo conseguir uno para la ciudad de Fremont. Tengo que saber dónde voy a alquilar para conseguirlo,” ella señaló. De hecho, todos los cambios de residencia requerirán un nuevo permiso y la cuota. “Es un paso adicional y un obstáculo adicional para las personas que están tratando de alquilar,” señaló Anderson, agregando “lo que está tratando de lograr en el papel, no lo hace, sólo está creando mucho dolor de cabeza extra para muchas otras personas, para la Ciudad, el Departamento de Policía, los inquilinos, los propietarios, los jóvenes, las personas de la tercera edad.” Knapp señala que si la ordenanza 5165 no se disuelve, no sólo afectará a los residentes, la Ciudad de Fremont en su conjunto va a ser sometida a una serie de problemas. “Si la ordenanza se pone en marcha y empiezan a aplicarla y hacer las provisiones cumplir van a haber más demandas. Local Fight FOR THE REPEAL OF FREMONT ORDINANCE

We know what this will and won’t do now. We know we can expect to have further problems with it. We know that it is going to cost us more, we know we could lose some funding, we know we are losing opportunities,” remarked Krista Anderson, a passionate Fremont activist from the organization Fremont Yes!. Anderson and her colleagues from the group Fremont Yes! have been working diligently to educate people in the community about Ordinance 5165, and how its housing provisions will potentially limit Fremont’s growth, viability and long term development. A special election in Fremont has been set for February 11. Fremont residents will have the opportunity to vote to repeal only the housing portion of Ordinance 5165. Under Ordinance 5165, Fremont residents will be required to obtain an

occupancy permit for dwellings in the City of Fremont. Residents seeking a permit would be required to pay a five dollar fee, provide their name, address, date of birth, country of citizenship and the address of the location they intend to lease. “The important thing is to realize that it is not a repeal of the entire ordinance, it is a revision to take out the part of it that we really believe is not going to have the impact that the drafters of the ordinance want it to have,” clarified Michelle Knapp, Anderson’s fellow colleague from Fremont Yes!. Knapp adds “the part that involves the work and E-Verify, that has already been passed, it’s implemented, and it is being used. The housing part of the ordinance is the part that is being addressed right now.” Knapp points out “the main misconception that is out there is that only Latinos will have to apply for a permit to rent,” but she clarifies that

every time any Fremont resident rents they will “have to get another one and every single person in the dwelling has to have one if they are eighteen or over.” The drafters of the ordinance intended for the legislation to push undocumented immigrants out of Fremont, but as Anderson remarked the ordinance will not be useful in preventing undocumented immigrants from renting. The ordinance indicates that “under no circumstances may the City of Fremont attempt to independently verify an alien’s immigration status,” clarified Anderson. The grassroots activist also pointed out that the Fremont Police Department was not going to be performing federal immigration work. “The police department is not checking the volatility of people’s status. It is creating a whole other level of confusion and an unnecessary step,” said Anderson.

Anderson indicated “it doesn’t prevent an undocumented immigrant from renting. It is just forcing the nursing home to take an extra step, the landlords, now they have to do that, they have to get the paperwork together, keep it on file, if someone questions them they can be taken to court, they could be fined $100 a day.” Anderson also mentioned that the permit has to be specific for the rental place you wish to lease. “I cannot just get one for the City of Fremont. I have to know where I am going to rent to get it,” she pointed out. In fact, every change of residence would require a new permit and fee. “It is an added step and an added obstacle for the people that are trying to rent,” pointed out Anderson, adding “what it is trying to accomplish on paper, it is not, it is just creating a lot of extra headache for a lot of other people, for the City, the Police Department, renters, landlords, young people, old people.”

College Possible

os jóvenes pueden entrar a la universidad “por la puerta grande” como suele decirse en algunos países latinoamericanos, augurando su éxito, gracias a College Possible. “Somos una organización nacional fundada por Jim McCorkell en el año 2000 en las Ciudades Gemelas (Minneapolis-Saint Paul, en Minnesota)”, explicó Marjorie Maas, Oficial de Desarrollo de College Possible en Omaha. “El modelo que Jim utilizó en ése estado - continuó Maas -, contratando a miembros de AmeriCorps para llevar a cabo nuestros servicios con los estudiantes, fue duplicado después en otros lugares más como Milwaukee (Wisconsin), y en tercer lugar, Omaha. Este 2014 tenemos la fortuna de que el programa se extenderá hasta Portland (Oregon). Maas comentó que la función principal de College Possible es la de “realizar una intervención temprana en las escuelas secundarias con estudiantes de bajos recursos, para ayudarlos a que continúen su preparación y asistan a la universidad”. Durante el ciclo escolar aún vigente (2013-214), College Possible está colaborando con ocho escuelas, de las cuales cuatro pertenecen a la red de Escuelas Públicas de Omaha (Benson High Magnet School, North High Magnet School, Northwest High Magnet School y South High Magnet School), una se ubica en Ralston (Ralston High School), dos están en el área de Papillion-La Vista (Papillion-La Vista High School y Papillion-La Vista South High School), y una más es parte del Distrito Escolar de Westside (Westside High School). Lo cual significa que alrededor de 600 estudiantes se benefician actualmente con el programa: “En Omaha se requiere que los estudiantes tengan un promedio de calificaciones (GPA) de 2.5 para participar con nosotros. Es decir, trabajamos con aquellos jóvenes que ya tienen un buen desempeño escolar y que en su mayoría no tendrán problemas para graduarse”.

Tras haberse instituído en Nebraska en el 2011, las estadísticas proporcionadas por esta agencia no lucrativa señalan que College Possible trabaja con unos 1,500 estudiantes por año, de los cuales el 30% es de origen latino, provenientes de familias con un ingreso menor a los $29,500 anuales. La joven Maddie Moore labora como Junior Coach (entrenadora) del programa College Possible en South High Magnet School. Ella es originaria de Omaha y se graduó de la Universidad de Creighton con una Licenciatura en Historia y con estudios especializados en Justicia, Estudios sobre la Paz y Español. Este es su segundo año consecutivo como miembro de AmeriCorps y el empleo le interesó muchísimo desde el principio, por la experiencia que puede adquirir en caso de que en el futuro, decida encaminarse hacia la enseñanza. “Parte de mi trabajo consiste en hablar con los estudiantes sobre lo que será su vida en la universidad - expresó Moore -, desde lo que significa vivir en un dormitorio universitario hasta la forma de convivir con un compañero de cuarto. Es impresionante la cantidad de dudas que ellos pueden tener al respecto, y nosotros comenzamos por responder a todas ellas, desde lo más elemental. Al mismo tiempo nos enfocamos en darles a conocer las oportunidades de becas que existen y también visitamos los diferentes planteles universitarios”. Algo muy valioso es que durante las horas de los talleres del programa de College Possible, los estudiantes participantes se prepararán para los dos exámenes necesarios para calificar sus conocimientos conocidos como SAT (que evalúa su capacidad de razonamiento y para solucionar problemas), y el ACT (donde demuestran su conocimiento en materias como inglés, lectura, matemáticas y ciencia). Según Moore: “Durante el entrenamiento intensivo comenzamos desde lo más básico, les mostramos estrategias para estudiar y pasar satisfactoriamente las pruebas y también les hacemos evaluaciones que no tienen carácter oficial pero que sirven para que se familiaricen con su tipo. Jessie Gotsdiner, Senior Coach de College Possible, es precisamente quien continúa el trabajo de Moore con los estudiantes de South High Magnet School: “Yo me ocupo de presentarles las opciones de apoyos de becas a su disposición para que apliquen a todas. Revisamos la ayuda federal que existe para obtener el dinero del gobierno para el cual califican”. Egresada de la Facultad de Educación y Política Social de Northwestern University, Gotsdiner al igual que Moore es nativa de Omaha y este es su segundo año con College Possible: “En los talleres hacia el final de su preparación, apoyamos a los estudiantes con sus solicitudes universitarias así como los ensayos que deben redactar para acompañarlas”. De acuerdo con Gotsdiner: “Las familias latinas en general desconocen las herramientas que existen en nuestra comunidad para ayudar a sus hijos a continuar con su educación, por lo que es necesario que exista una mejor comunicación entre todas las agencias”. “Algo que es importante recalcar es que College Possible se centra en las carreras universitarias de cuatro años - concluyó Maas -, mientras que otras organizaciones lo hacen en las de dos. Lo importante es coordinar esfuerzos para ver mejores estadísticas de egresados universitarios en la comunidad latina”.

Mensaje semanal del Presidente El discurso más reciente del presidente Obama a la nación se enfocó en el crecimiento de la economía de los Estados Unidos. Según Obama la tasa de desempleo en los Estados Unidos es la más baja que ha estado desde Octubre del 2008. Solamente este año pasado las empresas ayudaron a crear más de dos millones de nuevos puestos de empleo para los estadounidenses. “Gracias al labor y el sacrificio del pueblo estadounidense, nuestra economía está creciendo más fuerte,” dijo Obama. El Presidente señaló que “tenemos que promover el crecimiento de nuestra economía, y asegurarnos que más estadounidenses tengan la oportunidad de participar en ese crecimiento.” Obama propone un año de acción que ofrecerá oportunidades a los estadounidenses en todo el país. “Esa acción debe comenzar mediante la ampliación del seguro de desempleo para los estadounidenses que fueron despedidos en la recesión,” señaló Obama. Obama culpó a los republicanos en el Congreso por permitir que esta importante línea de vida se expirara para más de un millón de estadounidenses. Obama señaló que si no arreglamos problemas como éste América sentirá dolor a través de todo el año. Obama anima a todos a movilizarse y hacer este año un año de éxito.

College Possible OPENS THE DOORS FOR YOUNG LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS TO ACCESS A COLLEGE EDUCATION [By Marina Rosado]

Young people can go into College “por la puerta grande” (in an outstanding way), as is said in some Latin American countries, aiming for great success thanks to College Possible. “We are a national organization, founded in the year 2000 by Jim McCorkell at the Twin cities (Minneapolis-Saint Paul, in Minnesota),” said Marjorie Maas, Development Officer for College Possible at Omaha. “The model Jim used at that State – said Maas -, by hiring members of AmeriCorps to bring our services to students, was later used at other places such as Milwaukee (Wisconsin), and Omaha. In 2014, we have the good fortune of extending the program to Portland (Oregon).” Maas mentioned that the main objective for College Possible is “early intervention at high schools with low-income students, to help them continue their preparation so that they can go to College.” During the current school year (2013-214), College Possible has been working with eight schools, four of which are part of the network of Omaha Public Schools (Benson High Magnet School, North High Magnet School, Northwest High Magnet School and South High Magnet School), one in Ralston (Ralston High School), two in the Papillion-La Vista area (Papillion-La Vista High School y Papillion-La Vista South High School), and one more at the Westside School District (Westside High School). This means that over 600 students benefit from the program: “At Omaha, we require that students

have a 2.5 GPA in order to participate with us. This is her second year in a row as a member of AmeriCorps, and this job was something she wanted right from the start, because of the experience she can gain in case she decides to pursue a career in teaching. “Part of my job is talking with students about what life will be like in College – said Moore – from what it means to live on a College dorm, to how to live with their roommates. The number of questions on said topics is amazing, so we start by answering all of them, right from the most elementary. At the same time, we focus on letting them know about the scholarship opportunities available for them, and we also visit several Colleges.” Something very important is that during the workshops for College Possible, students that participate will prepare for two tests that review their knowledge: the SAT (which evaluates their reasoning and problem solving capabilities) and the ACT (where they demonstrate their knowledge on things such as English, Math, Science and Reading). According to Moore: “During this intensive training, we start from the basics, showing them the strategies to study in order to pass their test, and we also evaluate them with tests that are not official per se

but that help them to get to know this type of tests. In the same way, students will make a list of the five Colleges that interest them the most, and they will learn how to create their curriculum vitae.” After that first year of work and constant effort, even getting to work as volunteers at the community, students start their senior year and another trainer takes care of them. Senior Coach Jessie Gotsdiner from College Possible is the one who continues with Moore’s work with students from South High Magnet School: “I take care of presenting to them the available scholarship options so that they can apply for all of them. We review federal grants so that they can apply for any government funds they qualify for.” A graduate from the School of Education and Social Policy from Northwestern University, Gotsdiner is also from Omaha, and this is her second consecutive year with College Possible: “During the workshops at the end of training, we help students with their College applications as well as with working on the essays they must write to accompany them.” According to Gotsdiner: “In general, Latino families do not know about the tools available in our community for helping their kids continue with their education, and that is why there must be a better communication among all agencies.” “A very important tidbit is that College Possible focuses on four-year College careers – said Mass-, while other organizations focus only on two-year careers. President Focuses On Growing Economy President Obama’s most recent address to the nation focused on growing the economy of the United States. According to Obama the unemployment rate in the United States is the lowest that it has been since October 2008. Just last year businesses helped create over two million new jobs for Americans. “Thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of the American people, our economy is growing stronger,” said Obama. The President pointed out that “we’ve got to keep our economy growing, and make sure more Americans have the opportunity to share in that growth.” Obama proposed a year of action that will offer opportunities to Americans all across the country. “That action should begin by extending unemployment insurance for Americans who were laid off in the recession,” remarked Obama. Obama blamed Republicans in congress for allowing this important lifeline to expire for over one million Americans. Obama pointed out that if we do not fix problems like this America will hurt over the course of the year. Obama encourages everyone to mobilize and make this a great year for success.
