TULSA INSPIRES HISTORIC JOURNEYS AND DOWN-HOME TRADITIONS For more than 30 years, the Pinto Horse Association has chosen Tulsa to host the Pinto World Championship. Then, Color Breed Congress also began calling Tulsa ‘home’. Tulsa Regional Tourism is honored to keep that tradition going, and to welcome the competitors, spectators and supporters to Tulsa.

PtHA OFFICE UPDATE HELLO PINTO FAMILY, First, I want to thank Don McGee for the letter to the editor which you can see on the next spread. He makes some very good points, and I hope all of you read it and think about what he is saying. Our Pinto family needs support from all of our U.S. and international members. We want the Pinto Horse Association strong enough to weather any future storms. Next, I want to remind my Pinto family that even though we are not showing horses in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this summer, we are still together, a family. We’ve got our memories of previous shows to get us through to the next one. Our team has connected with members to get stories of winners at previous Pinto World Championship Shows. Everyone was eager to share just how much they love the PWC. Think of this collection of memories and photos as a virtual family reunion. Look for faces you recognize and stories you’ve lived through too. THE COLOR BREED

PINTO HORSE MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2020

LETTER TO THE EDITOR GREETINGS PINTO FAMILY MEMBERS, I am trusting that through the recent events and world changes that we all have faced so far this year, that we can, and do, focus on the good things that have been revealed. We have been forced to slow down and hopefully this will help us realize how we have been blessed to be Americans and to not take for granted the freedoms and liberties that we all enjoy. Americans were in a very busy, fast-paced lifestyle. We took things for granted, but many in the world don’t have the things that we as Americans have. I think also that we have not stopped to think about those things in our lives that are not rights but true privileges. One of those privileges is being part of the Pinto family. The biggest asset we have in the PtHA is the fact that we are a close-knit family, and family takes care of family, especially during the stormy patches in life. I would like to address a particular subject within our family of the PtHA. Until now being a member and paying membership dues both to charters and the PtHA has been on a convenience-based pay schedule. This means we don’t have to renew or purchase anything until the first show event we attend. That process has worked well in the past since most charters start their shows early in the year, and revenues to all charters and the Pinto Horse Association headquarters begin to come in at that time. But we have not been able to enjoy the opportunity of showing so far this year. This year has been difficult for us but also our U.S. state and international charters. Most small and large businesses have been affected by this, as well as our own family budgets. We all know the importance of cash flow. We should also know that this too will pass. We are already beginning to see America, along with our events, start to open again. As a member of PtHA, I personally challenge you to help keep the cash flow of our Pinto organizations intact. Instead of waiting to update membership dues and cards at the first show we attend, let’s do it now. These costs are such that we will be paying them at some point this year anyway, so let’s do it now. This would greatly benefit both levels of the Pinto organization in their cash flow and assist in keeping our Pinto family strong.

6

PINTO HORSE MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2020

There may be some who are considering not showing at all this year, but a true family doesn’t operate on a stop and start scenario. If we want our Pinto family strong next year, we need to ensure that we are being faithful this year. I realize cash is tight. This is a difficult time, but as far as helping our Pinto family, we are probably looking at less than $150 per member to renew charter and PtHA membership dues and cards. It’s not much on an individual level but collectively means a whole lot to PtHA. Paying dues now can help keep us strong not only for this year but for years to come. I don’t want us to jeopardize something we all love. Those of us, including me, that hold lifetime memberships, may want to think about donating to the membership account for all levels, including local, state, and PtHA international headquarters. Most of us carry our heads high when we profess that “WE ARE PINTO” so let’s show that kinship and prove it by sending our money in now. We need action to keep Pinto strong. This challenge is not meant to be seen as any kind of an agenda. I simply want to do my part in keeping our Pinto family healthy. I am, as I know you are, ready to get back on the show schedule, but until then, let’s do our part in keeping the future of OUR association the best in the industry! Humbled to be a part of the PtHA family. . . . Blessings! Don and Kathie McGee FULL MOON MULE COMPANY Vian, Oklahoma

YOUTH LEADERSHIP

2020-2021 YOUTH OFFICERS

PRESIDENT

Jordan Melegari

WEST SALEM, OHIO

I am 18 years old. I am active in FFA and have been an officer for three years. Though I have been around horses my entire life, I have been a PtHA member for five years. Through PtHA, I have met so many amazing people in and out of my state, and I would love to meet more! Last year I was a national youth director and the Ohio charter’s Youth Club vice president. This year I am president. Two years ago, I advocated for the addition of Solid Pinto classes to the Ohio charter and was able to get enough commitment for it to be added to the showbill.

VICE PRESIDENT

Paige Bunn

NORTH BEND, NEBRASKA

This will be my fifth year showing in the Pinto organization. I am hardworking and can work through anything that comes my way. I can bring new ideas to the table and new ways to look at old topics. I am dedicated to whatever I join and make sure to finish through to the end on what I do. Last year when my town flooded, I went and helped as many people as I could. In my 4-H Club, I help with our yearly volunteer projects which include picking up trash along a highway, making tie blankets and door decorations for the elderly at a local nursing home, helping at a local food pantry and participating in Operation Christmas Child.

SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE The Pinto Scholarship deadline is January 15, 2021. Download scholarship forms from pinto.org and mail them to the office. Forms must be postmarked by January 15.

SECRETARY

Miley Phillips

ADRIAN, MICHIGAN

I first began to love horses when my dad took me to ride a little brown pony named CHOCOLATE. After I outgrew him, my parents purchased IMA TRUE COWBOY. I showed Halter and the All-Around Walk/Trot classes. I finished 10th in the nation in Youth Geldings. My dad later found a PtHA registered horse named GOOD N’ ZIPPED. Our favorite events are Showmanship, Trail and Horsemanship. We love the challenges that the patterns give us, and the patterns bring us to a whole new level of competition. I have served several leadership roles in my organizations, including treasurer of FFA and secretary of my 4-H Club.

TREASURER

Julius Culwell

LOUISVILLE, MISSISSIPPI

I have won breed association points and high points in PtHA, PHBA, ApHC and AQHA. I have held local and national youth officer positions. I am currently the president for our local PtHA and PHBA youth charters. My goal as president is to help promote and build our local PtHA charter in Mississippi. I hope I can do the same helping to promote PtHA. My first registered horse that my parents bought me was a Pinto, and we have owned a total of five registered PtHA horses. I am a lifetime youth member. Out of all my experiences with horserelated activities, one of my favorite activities is Color Breed Congress. I want to promote all the opportunities PtHA has for youth.

REPORTER

Hannah Brock

NORTH FORT MYERS, FLORIDA

I have had a passion for riding and being around horses for all fifteen years of my life. My 4-H Club has taught me how to hold offices and be a leader as well as contribute to the larger community. The offices I have held include secretary for two years, reporter for two years and vice president for one year. I am currently president. In January I received Pinto Youth Wrangler of the Month and Junior Youth Zone 9 High Point. I was also a two-time world champion at Pinto World Championship Show last summer. I love meeting new people through this community.

IOWA

Kendra Husman

QUIMBY, IOWA

I am 16 years old, and this fall I will be a senior in high school. I am from a small town in northwest Iowa, and I show a big, goofy gelding in the Western and Hunt Seat All-Around. My favorite part about showing PtHA is meeting new people, seeing everyone’s hard work pay off and spending time with my tight-knit horse family. I have multiple experiences being an officer through many years in 4-H, FFA and Iowa Pinto Youth Association. I love having the opportunity to share my passion for youth, horses and this amazing organization.

MISSISSIPPI

Robert Culwell

LOUISVILLE, MISSISSIPPI

My family and I have been involved with PtHA for several years. My first horse was a registered Pinto horse. We first began with the association doing the OCAP program. I was so proud to get the end of the year award certificates after our first year. From there, we began showing at PtHA shows and got more of our horses registered with the association, and even assisted with getting a chapter started within our state. My family has enjoyed competing in the OCAP program and showing our Pintos at PtHA recognized shows, along with participating in national and local youth activities. As a youth director I can spread the word about all the good experiences my family has had with PtHA.

OHIO

Madison Wade

DALTON, OHIO

I am a seventh grade student. I attend the Ohio Virtual Academy online school. I am a member of the Jr. National Honor Society, 4-H Club, and Pinto, Appaloosa and Quarter Horse Associations. I swim for the Orrville Otters swim team. I have been showing horses since I was seven. My favorite memories are spending weekends at shows with my family. We like to meet new people who share our love of horses. When I am not showing, I like boating, swimming and playing golf with my dad. In 2019, I was the secretary for the Ohio Pinto Youth Club. This year I was elected as the 2020 Ohio Pinto Sweetheart. I am excited to represent my breed at fairs and shows all over.

10 Facts about Equine West Nile Virus Written by Valley Vet Supply Your horse is part of your family, but unless he is vaccinated, he could be at risk for potentially deadly diseases like West Nile virus. As we are mid-mosquito season, it is important to be aware of these 10 important West Nile virus facts. 1.

West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes, which feed on infected birds, to horses, humans and other mammals.

2.

Horses are at the highest risk for contracting West Nile virus during peak mosquito season which is July through October.

3.

Horses represent 97% of all reported non-human mammalian cases of West Nile virus.

4.

Infected horses begin to show signs of disease as early as three to 15 days.

5.

More than 25,000 cases of West Nile virus have been reported in U.S. horses.

6.

The disease presents a 33% fatality rate to horses.

7.

Disease risk increased in 2018, with 384 cases of equine West Nile virus reported.

8.

Africa, Eastern Europe and West Asia have long experienced the impact of West Nile virus; however, the disease is fairly recent to North America, with the first case diagnosed in 1999.

9.

When properly vaccinated, horses have shown to be 30 times less likely to contract West Nile virus.

10. Vaccination provides horses with nearly 100% protection against West Nile virus. Offer your horse the best protection available against West Nile virus with a selection of top-quality vaccines available at ValleyVet.com. HORSE HEALTH MATTERS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE HORSE HEALTH SPONSOR OF PtHA

Controlling Flies for a More Peaceful Stable Of the peaceful sounds echoing throughout your barn — horses quietly munching on hay and the clip-clop of hooves down the barn aisle — not included is the hum of buzzing flies, your horse anxiously swishing his tail and defensively kicking as he attempts to rid the pests and their wicked, winged ways. Written by Valley Vet Supply UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS Flies are more than just a nuisance. They contribute to significant equine diseases and conditions, including pigeon fever, strangles, influenza, Salmonella, eye worms and summer sores. Summer sores are caused by house flies, face flies and stable flies as they transfer parasitic nematode larvae (Habronema species) to moist areas around a horse’s open wounds, eyes, nostrils, mouth and genitalia. When the larvae create a hypersensitivity reaction, chronic, fleshy and non-healing wounds known as summer sores can result. The condition is costly and can require months off from riding and training as the horse heals. Anne-Marie Morgan is a horse owner and head trainer at Miami Equestrian Club. She’s no stranger to the negative impact flies can have on a horse, especially relating to summer sores. “Lesson horses are prone to summer sores because they often acquire scrapes from supporting students over jumps and poles, or playing in the paddocks,” Morgan said. “Thankfully, we have a very clean barn with a great fly spray system that keeps flies and the risks they present to a minimum.” Morgan detailed how one horse tripped over a trot pole, leaving a half-inch-long cut near his coronet band and ultimately causing a severe summer sore. The wound was left uncovered for only one night, allowing flies access, and by the

26

PINTO HORSE MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2020

next morning it was oozing and displaying proud flesh. His sore required five months of treatment and daily bandaging. Once healed, the sore left behind an unsightly scar. IDENTIFYING A SOLUTION Protecting horses from harmful flies requires a three-pronged approach: following best-practice barn management, leveraging proven fly control products and outfitting horses with fly masks, sheets and boots. 1. Follow best-practice barn management. Horse owners can eliminate fly havens by removing manure and excess feed, as well as any damp hay. Ridding trash and keeping the garbage containers tightly closed and cleaned helps. Additionally, store manure sites as far from the barn as possible; it is ideal to remove sites off-property completely. And as flies often rest in shady, heavily vegetated areas, keeping grass mowed is crucial. “Eliminating standing water and keeping stalls, paddocks and barns clean will help control fly populations,” Morgan said. “It’s a team effort to be vigilant about cleaning.” 2. Enlist trusted fly control products. Use proven fly control products to help combat the fly population. By releasing fly predators — wasps that lay eggs in fly pupae and then kill developing fly larvae — flies are stopped before they even hatch. Fly systems, baits and traps

can also can help control the fly population. Horses can find relief from flies through feed supplements as well as regular fly spray use. “Products that kill fly eggs before they are hatched are great assets to fighting flies in largescale and smaller barns,” Morgan said. 3. Outfit horses in fly protection gear. A wide variety of fly protection gear is available to keep horses safe from harmful and painful fly bites. Brodie Poppino, professional rodeo cowboy and representative for Professional’s Choice, makes sure his roping horse ICE BOX is fully outfitted in fly protection gear from head to hoof. “I keep fly sheets, fly masks and fly boots on him, and I always use fly spray,” Poppino said. “At

Professional’s Choice, we have a fly mask and fly sheet that is so light and comfortable it’s like wearing a third grade basketball jersey. Some masks and sheets can be so heavy, and the last thing you want to do is put on a 30-pound sheet when it’s 90 degrees and humid.” Ensure horses are protected from the significant dangers posed to their health and wellness by flies. PINTO PASSION FOR A LIFETIME by Lechelle Calderwood

Nicki Story loves Pintos. Her passion is strong, and her actions reflect her love for the Pinto Horse Association of America. Story is a third-generation PtHA member. This spring, at age 24, she showed her commitment to PtHA by obtaining her lifetime membership.

Story’s family owns Spot My Quarters Ranch in Henryetta, Oklahoma. Her first memories are of playing with the foals and watching her mom train. “I have been around Pintos since I was born,” Story said. “My mom always said I was not born in a barn, but I was there soon after!” Horses have been a part of Story’s life since she was a baby. “I had a play pen under a shade tree while my mom worked at the barn,” Story said. “I rode my first Pinto down a parade at 5 months old.” Story’s mother and grandmother are also members of PtHA. “They both love the organization and have always talked about how easy it is to work with,” Story said. “Since we register a good amount of colts every year, paperwork can get a little confusing, but PtHA has been very helpful.” Story explains that assistance from the organization helps take stress out of the registration process. Story’s grandmother, Jo Lynne Ritter, has been in PtHA since 1976. She became a lifetime member seven years ago. She made sacrifices in order to stay in PtHA. “When my grandmother first started her breeding program, she was also raising four kids and would save up her extra money to afford her horses and her membership dues each year,” Story said. “My grandma has worked so hard to build the program we have today, and I love to tell people about it. I love the history of it and the bloodlines that have developed over the last 50 years.” Now they have 50 head including brood mares, stallions, foals, fillies and riding horses. Story’s lifetime membership was paid for by her grandmother. “We decided since I plan to continue our breeding program and showing, it would be a good investment,” Story said. “My grandma has always said to focus on putting a good brain on them, and the rest will follow.” Story enjoys working together with family members to come up with unique names for new horses. She also enjoys photography. Earlier this spring, she entered three photos in the PtHA All Equine Photo Contest. Her image Working Man won second place. Story has had many great experiences with PtHA. “I love showing our yearlings, but probably the best feeling is bringing a new Pinto into the world,” explained Story. “So much blood, sweat and tears goes into each baby. When a mare delivers a healthy baby, it doesn’t get any better than that.”

First Snow (previous spread) In central Oklahoma, we hadn’t received a good

snow in a few years so as soon as it started I grabbed the camera. These two (HIEDI SAW A LINCOLN and A FINE FRECKLED STONE) were yearlings that were very unsure of what was falling from the sky.

Working Man (above) The horse in this picture is named PEPPYS MAJOR

STRIKE. He is a third-generation stallion raised by Spot My Quarters Ranch. He is being ridden by trainer, Todahyah Fish, in prep for a clinic with Buck Brannaman. The clinic was a wonderful experience, and both horse and rider did great!

name IMA MAJOR ITCH. Her mom is a very special mare to me because she was the first Pinto I had ever shown. IMA is a fourth-generation Spot My Quarters’ baby and is enjoying her new family in Wisconsin.

A COLLECTION OF PWC

MEMORIES These stories come from first-timers and people who’ve been to the show many times. The stories describe how hard work and determination have paid off, sometimes in more ways than expected.

“I bought RAD COLOR, aka Lego, in August 2018 after being out of showing for about 13 years. Pinto World was my first world show and was such a great show. I couldn’t have gotten where the two of us have gotten without the guidance of our trainer, Bear Smith.”

Christen Redding BUSHNELL, FLORIDA

“This was my first ever Pinto show, and we came home World Champions in Amateur Flag Race, Amateur English Trail, and Walk/Trot Disciplined Rail Senior/Elite (with my mom). Also Reserve World Champion in Junior Amateur Western Pleasure 6 and Over Stock Type. I was so excited when I learned that my horse ALWAYS THE TALK was eligible for Pinto papers. Getting memberships and the papers was a pretty easy process too! Our trainer Jando Guerra guided us through our first Pinto experience with much success. Since this adventure last year, I’ve talked others into joining us for the next Pinto World Championship Show!”

Last year she earned PtHA Pinto of the Year Western Dressage, World Champion Amateur Western Dressage Intro 1, World Champion Amateur Western Dressage Basic 1, Reserve World Champion and 2x Top 10. Just a few years ago, she was abused, neglected and starved, surrounded by horse skeletons. Now she is a 2x PtHA World Champion! We appreciate the ability to be able to show on a world level with a rescue horse at PtHA, and we look forward to the next PWC!”

“The photo of my World Champion, WINNIE PEARL means so much more than that beautiful belt buckle and coat I won; it was an accomplishment just to be able to drive 22 hours and be sound enough to show. “KNOW KIDDIN, a 2008 AQHA, APHA, PHBA and PtHA registered gelding, was so very tolerant of us dressing him up in crazy costumes! In 2017, he took third place at PWC, and in 2019, he took home the Championship! Unfortunately, our family lost him earlier this year to an injury. We’d love to pay homage to this great horse. He helped multiple riders win big and grow their confidence, including owners Tamara Brown, winning her first Championship and Reserve Championship with him, and youth Hunter Fraccica, winning his first Championship with him, at their first PWC ever in 2019. KNOW KIDDIN, aka Jorge, loved his barn family at Turner Show Horses in Florida. Our win in 2019 in the Costume Class was a tribute to all of our team as it was a group effort. Such fun we all had! He is missed greatly by all that knew him.”

MAKING DREAMS

COME TRUE by Lechelle Calderwood

Each summer, dreams come true at the Pinto World Championship

Show. The details vary depending on the exhibitor’s age, experience

and number of times having shown. The dreams range from completing a challenging class to having a good go to placing. Many goals include winning a buckle, saddle, harness or other award.

Cynthia Shipman, from Claremore, Oklahoma, had been to two Pinto World Championship Shows when she became focused on a single goal. “After merely placing in Trail and Western Pleasure I told my

friend that all I wanted to do was win a buckle,” Shipman said. “She

suggested the new Ranch Riding class which I entered and won Reserve Champion in 2015.” With practice and determination, Shipman finally got her buckle.

The thrill and excitement of the big win kept Shipman showing. Since then, Shipman’s ZIPONIC has won more titles including 2017 Reserve World Champion Walk/Trot Amateur Hunter Under Saddle, 2018 World Champion Walk/Trot Amateur English Showmanship, 2018 World Champion English Equitation, 2018 World Champion Trail, 2018 Reserve High Point Amateur Walk/Trot Solid Horse and 2019 Champion Amateur Walk/Trot Trail. Shipman has passed her love of the PWC on to another generation. Her granddaughter Maisie Shipman won 2017 and 2018 Reserve World Champion Leadline and 2019 World Champion Leadline with ZIPONIC. Shipman’s enthusiasm remains stronger than ever as she looks forward to showing ZIPONIC in the future. Last year, Madelynne Alden, from Columbia, Missouri, competed in her first ever Pinto World Championship Show with her horse READY TO LOVE and won the titles 2019 Champion Youth 10 & Under Walk/Trot English Showmanship and English Equitation. She also won Reserve World Champion in Youth 10 & Under Walk/Trot Trail and was top 10 in all her classes. Alden’s dreams came true at this show. She further aspires to being a world champion in each age division as she gets older and moves into new age brackets. The Pinto Horse Association of America has helped many dreams come true by putting on the show. Karen Craighead, who has been involved with PtHA for many years and was president 2018-2019, remembers “standing in the holding pen at PWC with a 9-year-old girl at her first big show. She was so nervous, about to throw up. She was close to crying and leaving the pen. An older gentleman at the gate started talking to her, and I could see her visibly relax, walk up to the cone and show. That is Pinto. The girl is now 22 with 47 buckles.” With encouragement and support, the little girl made it through the show, and her dreams eventually became reality. Charlie Hall has worked as a PWC assistant show manager for the past 15 years. He works hard to “help exhibitors and their horses be in two and sometimes three places at the same time, all while making sure they are smiling and having fun.” The staff is committed to helping exhibitors do their best.

While the dreams and dedication of exhibitors have remained the same, the show has gone through many changes since 1965. In 2000, the big summer show changed from a national show to a world show. “I remember that a few on the board of directors were not in favor of changing the show, but the majority were in favor of elevating the show to a World Championship level,” said Joe Grissom, who was PtHA Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the time. “It was my belief that elevating to a world show status would improve the image of the Pinto Horse Association in the industry, and I feel that we accomplished that goal.”

PtHA Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “Our corporate partners step up to the plate each year with the awards we give out.” Payouts totaled $29,400 for the Charity Walk/Trot, Color World Series Futurity and National Snaffle Bit winners.

Making the change to international has allowed exhibitors from all over the globe to attend the show. The number of classes, exhibitors and horses increased, and exhibitors from Canada, Australia and Europe have shown. “I remember the exhibitors’ excitement to be competing for a World Championship title and all of the new awards and other prizes,” said Grissom. “Once we became a world show, there were many more awards to be handled and handed out.”

In November, more dreams will come true as the Pinto family reunites for the PWC. Usually held in June, this year the Pinto World Championship Show has been rescheduled because of state and local regulations regarding the coronavirus pandemic. The PWC will run alongside Color Breed Congress Show Nov. 7-22, 2020, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with almost 1000 classes on the schedule.

Awards for 2019 topped $325,000 with ARC saddles and bridles, Gist Silversmiths belt buckles, rosette and neck ribbons, trophies, Kensington products, Herron’s Tack driving carts and harnesses, and Tioga Territory jackets and vests. “We enjoy awarding top quality prizes to talented equine and exhibitors each year,” said Darrell Bilke, current

In 2019, the Pinto World Championship Show hosted 1,336 horses, ponies, miniatures, mules and donkeys. More than 2,345 exhibitors came from 43 states and three Canadian provinces. Disciplines included Youth, Novice, Amateur, Open and Walk/Trot with 39,200 judged class entries based on four judges for each class, plus the average card.

Exhibitors at the 2020 Pinto World Championship Show will have the chance to multiply winnings with new options. The payouts this year include the WCHA Stakes Class, the Valley Vet Supply Yearling Versatility Challenge and the Color World Series by Appaloosa Pleasure Horse Association.
