OFFICE OUTLOOK As the seasons change and winter arrives here in Oklahoma, the PtHA is hard at work preparing for the PtHA Convention March 12-14 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We’re looking foward to seeing each of you at the convention. Meanwhile, we recently wrapped up the 2019 Color Breed Congress in Tulsa. Talk about change of seasons. In our two weeks there, we went from 80 degrees to 30 degrees, back to 60 and just all over the board. There was a constant, however, during these nine packed days — excellent showmanship from our exhibitors. This year, 1,503 exhibitors came from 29 states in the United States, Canada and Sweden. We saw a total of 881 equine during this time with almost 100 staff working the show and more than 30 vendors in attendance. With $200,000 in prizes awarded during the show, Congress entry numbers increased by 14.5 percent over the previous year. This was one of our most successful years yet thanks to each of you! Jenny La Grange, our PtHA president, and I just were talking about Congress. We’re always looking for ways to better your Congress experience. One thing we both noticed is the ranch horse division is growing in popularity. There were a total of 142 ranch horse entries at the show this year with 40 horses and 54 exhibitors competing in those classes. Congratulations to all Congress winners. And thank you again for being a part of the 2019 Congress. We’re already planning for 2020. Speaking of 2020, the Pinto World Championship Show is set for June 8-20 in Tulsa. We look foward to seeing you! Sincerely,

Darrell L. Bilke Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

EDITOR’S NOTE Dear Reader,

Welcome to the Fall issue of Pinto Horse Online. This issue brings about changes,

as Angelia (Angie) Higgins, the magazine’s editor for over two years, is returning to Ohio to live closer to family as she and her husband recently welcomed their first child. PtHA must have been a good influence on Angie. Along with her husband and newborn, she is bringing two horses with her to Ohio -- Animal and Reba. All of us at the Pinto Horse Association of Angelia Higgins

America appreciate Angie’s contribution over the years and wish her the best of luck.

“Angie will be sorely missed,” said Darrell Blike, PtHA executive vice president and

chief operating officer. “One of Angie’s biggest accomplishment here was rebuilding the Pinto brand. Her goal was to be become more consistent in branding across all communication mediums. She has done a fine job of building awareness. We sincerely thank her and wish her the best in this next chapter.”

Here at PtHA, we welcome any comments, critiques or ideas you have as a reader.

How can we do things better? Just let us know. You can reach us at magazine@pinto.org or call us at 405-491-0111. Thank you.

25 Years With Childhood Horse And World Champion,

Singin’ Saddie Sue Nearly 25 years ago, a Wyoming girl was introduced to an untamed Pinto filly who was boarding on her family’s land. Denise Lear immediately noticed the bond between her daughter and the filly. She offered the owner $350 to make the horse her daughter’s own. As a first-time horse owner, “We were told this horse might not be the best fit, but my daughter Kelly promised me, ‘I’m going to figure this out, Mom,’” recalled Lear. She laughed as she remembered an 8-year-old Kelly training Saddie to lunge — comparing it to watching “dirt skiing,” as the yearling tested her young rider’s strength. “We didn’t know anything about horses,” recalls daughter, Kelly Mancinelli, DVM. “My mom would pay for the one-hour lesson a week. My sisters and I would clean stalls, clean houses and do any odd jobs we could to pick up a lesson. Growing up, we didn’t come from a ton of money.” When Kelly and Saddie began competing in English, they were winning in black rubber boots that were purchased from the local hardware store. “We couldn’t afford English boots,” Lear said. “The boots would have white writing on them, which we would mark out. And they were still winning.” Fast forward to 2019, and Singin’ Saddie Sue is 25 years old. Kelly is still in the saddle, and the two continue to compete across the country. Of many accolades, Saddie is an eight-time 4-H Club champion, 11-time Congress Champion and eight-time World Champion. Together, they have won several show high-point championships, as well as 200 belt buckles, 150 trophies and six show saddles. It was the dedication of a young rider, her unbreakable bond with her horse and unwavering support from her family that helped achieve 25 years of success and the greatest memories.

Kelly Mancinelli and Saddie have an unbreakable bond.

“I met amazing people who taught me a ton. I asked a lot of questions and watched other riders,” Dr. Mancinelli said. “We’re almost like one, Saddie and I. Besides showing and competing throughout all these years, she’s been through every aspect of my life.” From the time Dr. Mancinelli met Saddie, the two have not been apart. Saddie traveled to her undergraduate program and even to veterinary school at Colorado State University (in fact, she had a place to stay before Dr. Mancinelli). “That horse is my best friend,” she said. Caring For The Senior Show Horse Equine wellness couldn’t be more important to Dr. Mancinelli. Saddie is the perfect example that when it comes to “senior” performance horses, age is just a number when horse health is prioritized. While there are special considerations for senior horses, risks such as age-related diseases can be managed through preventative care and trusted medications. Like more than 30 percent of horses and ponies over 15 years old, Saddie has experienced PPID (Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction), formerly known as Cushing’s Disease. PPID causes the horse’s pituitary gland at the base of the

Saddie’s weight started to increase. And she developed fat deposits on her neck, above her shoulders and tail head. “A few weeks after the 2018 Pinto World Championship Show, Saddie came up bilaterally lame in the front end. We took her to Weatherford Equine, and her coffin bones in her front feet were mildly rotated,” Dr. Mancinelli said. “We checked her for Cushings at that time, and she was positive for the disease.” Saddie is administered Prascend daily and is now at a healthy weight. Command IR Ultra is an effective supplement that is also available at ValleyVet.com, supporting horses with PPID by aiding in reducing fat pockets, restoring body condition and addressing the metabolic condition. erinarian to help maintain weight and comfort. Story by Valley Vet Supply

Dr. Kelly Mancinelli’s Tips to Keep Senior Show Horses Healthy and Happy “I’m so proud of her; Saddie is one in a million,” Dr. Mancinelli said. “Listen to your horse. They’ll let you know if they don’t want to do this anymore.” Some of Dr. Mancinelli’s advice: • Prioritize preventative medicine and run regular bloodwork to help prevent horse health issues • Keep senior horses on a quality diet to help ensure excellent gut health. • Schedule routine equine dental exams with your veterinarian to help maintain weight and comfort. • “Baby” your senior show horse, and be cautious of not overworking them. They know their job.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER I’m sure it’s no new news to you guys, that it takes a lot of sacrifice and dedication to get your horses, mules and donkeys ready for shows. The staff at PtHA works hard on the shows and on getting out magazines and newsletters. Just like this newsletter, and after a lot of labor, when it’s finished just

a push of a button or a key, and it is sent to all of us. Let me tell you about other letters that took a lot of sacrifice and dedication to get delivered. The Pony Express was a private express company that carried mail by an organized relay of horse-

back riders. The eastern end was St. Joseph, Missouri; the western end was Sacramento, California. If the weather and the horses held out and the Indians held off, the letter would complete the entire 2,000-mile journey in 10 days — top speed. Lincoln’s inaugural address is said to have delivered in seven days. It may surprise you the Pony Express was only in operation from April 3, 1860, to November 18, 1861. Then the telegraph came and when the telegraph line came and the line was completed between the two cities, Pony Express was no longer necessary. Being a rider for the Pony Express was tough. Talk about focus. Riding constantly at top speed, stopping only to bounce off one horse onto another, you were expected to ride up to a 100 miles a day, changing horses every 15 to 25 miles. You say, “How in the world would they get any applicants? How did they ever recruit anybody?” Well, here is an ad from an 1860’s San Francisco newspaper. This was an ad run by the Pony Express: “Wanted: Young, skinny, wiry fellows. Not over 18. Must be expert riders willing to take risk daily. Orphans preferred.”

PtHA Chaplain Rusty McCormick Photo by Erin Cantrell

ers had to have riding over rough terrain filled with gopher holes and other hazards. You have to really focus on what you and your mount need to do. As your chaplain, let’s apply this dedication to The Spiritual Dimension. Philippians 3.14 says, “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of GOD in CHRIST JESUS.” Just as you have to concentrate on your training and dedication to win an award or prize, so you must also do the same thing to “press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of GOD in CHRIST JESUS.” Hebrew 121-2 says, “Therefore we

’Just as you have to concentrate on your training and dedication to

also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and The Sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2) looking unto JESUS, THE AUTHOR AND FINISHER OF OUR FAITH, Who for the joy that was set before HIM endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” You see JESUS, went through a lot of tough stuff, just for YOU! So,

that you wouldn’t have to take a beating and die on a cruel cross. And HE wants you to be seated by HIM in Glory. THE LORD is there to help us in our struggles, whether it’s practicing and training for a show or just going through the arena of life. And it’s a whole lot easier to do this, when you have your eyes on HIM. Column by PtHA Chaplain Rusty McCormick
