US Ambassador in Karratha

He realises how important Australia is and spoke about his conversation with the Vice President of America. “I bumped into him as soon as he got out of the bathroom and he started rambling on about Australia with their cyclones, bush fires, floods and the Government,” he said. “I wondered if he had a briefing aid hidden in the bathroom, it surprised me that he knew so much about what was going on in Australia.” He went on and mentioned that us locals are living in one of the most dynamic areas in the most dynamic states of Australia. “This place is so extraordinary, seeing how far this Shire has come and knowing it is going to continue to grow for decades to come,” he said Mr Bleich mentioned that Shire of Roebourne President Nicole Lockwood is ‘powerhouse cubed’. “I have really enjoyed being in the Shire of Roebourne and we have received a very warm

United States Ambassador Jeffrey Bleich and US Consul General Aleisha Woodward arrived in Karratha on Wednesday, April 13 to check out this ‘dynamic town’. Mr Bleich was appointed as Ambassador back in 2009, when President Barack Obama appointed him to the role. Previously, he served as Special Counsel to the President in the White House. “Australia is very close to America, not just with the economic relationship or our Defense Force, it’s more then that,” he said. “We see Australia growing significantly and being able to support the country and watch it succeed is unbelievable.” This is Mr Bleich fourth trip to Western Australia and third trip to Karratha. He enjoyed joking around with the audience at the Shire of Roebourne Council Chambers laughing how he can not talk for long as he didn’t want to get in the way of the alcohol and thirsty Americans and Pilbara people.

Smoke alarm has tensions fly high On Wednesday, April 13 people at the Karratha Airport were evacuated due to a smoke alarm that was activated in the toilets. Shire of Roebourne President Nicole Lockwood said the resident Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting Service (ARFFS) responded to what was soon discovered to be a

false alarm. “The team quickly assessed the area concerned and reset the alarm,” she said. “A short while later operations at the airport had returned to normal. “This is a great example of the

important service the ARFFS team provides. “Airport staff were particularly pleased with the way people followed the directions of fire wardens.” Fortunately no flights were delayed as a result of the evacuation.

Harding Dam open The Water Corporation will reopen Harding Dam to the public today (Saturday, April 16), following the completion of necessary repairs to the recreation area and maintenance of eroded roadways caused by heavy rainfall during March.

Public Access to Harding Dam is only available via North West Coastal Hwy. Visitors should travel through Roebourne and follow the public road signage onto Woodbrook Rd (via Cherratta Rd). This includes a 27km gravel section.

The Corporation reminds visitors to take necessary precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. This comes following the recent detection of mosquito-borne Murray Valley Encephalitis in the Shire of Roebourne.

The PilbaraPoet My jaw dropped as I stood before a massive display of tinsel wrapped Easter eggs in a supermarket a few months back.

by Elise Batchelor

To be precise, it was Boxing Day. You’d think that with this much warning that Easter was on its way, I would have been organised to make my Lenten sacrifice. Alas, I forgot. But, with a few days still to go before Easter, maybe I should do the right thing and give up…what?

Become a fan of Pilba ra Poet. Search Pilbara Po et on Facebook

The Sacrificial Spam

K

How long ago did Lent begin? I’m sure some folk would know. Is it too late to make a sacrifice? If I’m late, good Lord, will it show? I could well cease my Facebooking, but I’d feel like a big ‘has been’, or give up using Twitter, but I’m tweeting Charlie Sheen.

But really, if this Lent thing comes to nuts and bolts right now, I should just cut out hot cross buns! But they make my tummy growl. OK, then after all these thoughts, as my mind ponders the dregs, having gorged myself for months now I should give up EASTER EGGS!

I could give up the housework. I know, that’s obvious. But since my maid, chef, gardener quit I shouldn’t make a fuss. Like many who have sacrificed good grammar, might I? Please? But I’m trembling, sweating, screaming, FOR I LOVE APOSTROPHES!!!!

Ah yes, the humble tinselled choc eye level, Boxing Day. Still digesting Christmas pud, I thought, CHOCOLATE, YUM. Hooray! I know, I know, it’s sacrilege Jesus would turn in his grave. But isn’t that whole darn point of Easter, anyway?

I could well give up tasty tins of things like stew or Spam, but isn’t there a decadence to meat out of a can? I could have lain off tonic water, but how could I drink gin? I thought, give up adultery, which I would have, had I sinned.

And thus I have decided to keep my punctuation and every other option on this list of part salvation. Except for one I’ve not yet touted, typing here, hell bent. Indeed, I’ve made my final choice. I’ll simply give up…Lent.

Dampier Highway to get green Karratha is due for a make over and with that, Main Roads and Pilbara Cities Royalties for Regions have joined forces to make that happen with $4 million going towards greenery for the Dampier Highway. On Monday, April 11, member for North West Vincent Catania MLA said that they will be working together to create an attractive entrance into Karratha. “Karratha is growing larger everyday and we can’t have a city with red dirt and weeds on the highway,” he said. “It needs to look more attractive and more like a city. “Every other city has gorgeous greenery so why can’t Karratha.” Work on the Dampier Highway started about two weeks ago however Mr Catania said that they have been pushing for this for a while now.

• Main Roads and Pilbara Cities Royalties for Regions will be making the Dampier Highway green “Just looking at Baynton West and how much better the appearance looks, you can imagine how this will affect the appearance of the town once everything has been put in place,” he said. Greenery will be visible from the ABC Radio Station

in the centre of town all the way to Baynton West. “Of course there won’t be any roses but we will make sure that it is best of the best for the town’s environment and be water wise,” he laughed.

City of the North Plans to create a vibrant city centre in Karratha are gaining momentum with preparation of a detailed program of works now underway. These works to revitalise the town centre, in line with the Karratha City Centre Master Plan, will form a key component of the recently adopted Karratha: City of the North Plan. Stage one works to transform Karratha into a regional city are now being scheduled with input soon to be sought from residents, land owners and business operators in the town centre. Roebourne Shire Council President Nicole Lockwood said the Shire, in partnership with LandCorp, would seek to engage all affected parties, to explain the proposed works. “Through this engagement we aim to minimise the impact of the works on those who live, do business or own land in the existing town centre,”

Councillor Lockwood said. “Stage one works, due to commence late in 2011, will focus on Sharpe Ave and the intersection of Sherlock Crescent and Barlow Place. Businesses in this area will be our primary interest. ”We are also keen to hear from those who may be affected by the extension of Sharpe Avenue through to Dampier Road and by the creation of Karratha Terrace as Sherlock and Barlow are aligned and connected west to Balmoral Road and east to Searipple Road,” Councillor Lockwood said Cr Lockwood said initial contact had already been made with a number of affected parties and this process was set to continue over the coming months. “The plan is to engage with all affected parties to ensure we manage a smooth transition from mining town to regional city,” she said. “We encourage any person or party, who feels

they may be impacted by the implementation of this plan, to contact the Shire. “For example, we have already had discussions with residents of the Karratha Autumn Club on Bassett Road, which will ultimately be relocated to make way for the planned extension of Sharpe Avenue to Dampier Road.” Cr Lockwood said the Shire of Roebourne, in consultation with the Pilbara Cities Office and LandCorp were investigating suitable locations for a new retirement village. “Every effort will be made to ensure the new retirement village meets and indeed exceeds the expectations of Autumn Club members. “Members of the Autumn Club were recently invited to a meeting at the Shire offices and provided with the most up-to-date information about the plan and given the opportunity to ask questions.”

Strategic Community Plan draft open for comment Following months of hard work by Councillors and Shire employees, the draft Shire of Roebourne Strategic Community Plan (SCP) 2011-2021 is now open for public comment. This important document reflects the Shire’s long-term community and local government aspirations and priorities. An important part of developing a SCP involves the identification of key issues and priorities through consultation with the community, focusing on its aspirations for at least the next decade. Roebourne Shire Council President Nicole Lockwood said,

once finalised, the SCP would ultimately drive the short, medium and long-term strategies of the Shire as determined by the community. “We must then determine which services are required to deliver on these strategies,” Councillor Lockwood said. “The strategic community plan feeds into our Corporate Business Plan, which prioritises the community’s aspirations and sets out how council assets and resources will be used to meet those aspirations. “The community has a powerful voice in determining how local government responds to its needs and its involvement in the

development of the SCP is proof of this.” Copies of the SCP are available online at www.roebourne. wa.gov.au and at the Shire Administration Office on Welcome Road. Shire residents are encouraged to have their say on the plan via email at sor@ roebourne.wa.gov.au or in writing to PO Box 219 Karratha WA 6714 attention Henry Eaton before Monday, May 2, 2011 at 4pm. Shire staff and Councillors will also host a display at Centro Karratha in the coming weeks. For more information contact the Shire on (08) 9186 8555.

Elanor Joan Davis-Collins 24th May 1965 - 7 April 2011

Elanor - a mum, a wife, a lover, a friend, a daughter, a sister, a grand mother, an inspiration. So many things to so many people. A woman who knew what she wanted and went for it. Caring, strong willed, well intentional, helpful and much more. We will miss her, miss her laugh, her wicked sense of humour, her whirl wind approach to life. We admired her for overcoming so many things - she approached everything head on - nothing was too difficult. She had a life she loved, a family she adored and friends and family who loved her. Elanor shone brightly for too short a time. She will be missed and never forgotten. Our family would like to thank everyone for how generous, helpful and supportive they have been in this tough time. A service will be held at 10.30am Sunday 17th at Karratha Cemetery followed by a gathering at the Tambrey Centre.

Easter booking deadline The deadline for the Easter edition is on Tuesday, April 19 at 5pm to ensure that it will be printed and distributed in time. We hope you have a happy Easter.

In just a matter of weeks the Baynton West Family Centre has been transformed from an empty dirt block into a busy building site. Due for completion in November 2011, the $13.8-million Baynton West Family Centre will be an innovative “one stop shop” for family and child related services. Project contractors Pindan completed the concrete slab pour in late March and have already started work erecting hundreds of tonnes of steel framework which should be finished by the end of April. The project remains on schedule, despite bad weather conditions, with contractors catching up lost hours by working extended shifts with permission of nearby residents. The next stage of development will include construction of structural walls and the installation of roof cladding and gutters. When complete, the Baynton West Family Centre will be a multi-purpose facility which boasts a child care centre, office and clinic space for family counsellors and specialist health providers and two infant health clinics. It will also include playgroup facilities with outdoor shaded areas, a coffee shop, community meeting rooms as well as offices to accommodate government departments and not-for-profit community organisations.

Wildlife watch: Eastern Reef Egret

Pilbara Wildlife Carers Association

By Jenny Fox The reef egret is found on the coastline of most of Australia and its islands and is also known as the reef heron or blue heron. It hunts on the rocky shores and tidal inlets, as well as mangroves, rivers and exposed coral reefs. It hunts by stealth and crouches low as it moves through the water. They can hunt day or night catching small fish, crustaceans and insects. These egrets are largely sedentary, meaning they don’t go anywhere preferring to stay in the one area. Interestingly these herons have two colour forms, one white and one gray. Both forms interbreed and it is not unusual to find both white and dark offspring in the same nest! These birds breed throughout the year, nesting in trees in woodlands.

• Eastern Reef Egret Their nest is a stick platform lined with seaweed where two to three eggs are laid. Both parents brood the eggs and chicks remain in the nest for six weeks. These birds are prevalent around Pretty Pool in Hedland. The bird in the photo was photographed on the Dampier foreshore, photo courtesy of Melanie Barton.

Pet Watch Keep those Easter treats to yourself Over the next few weeks when you’re tucking into your yummy Easter eggs and your canine friend looks at you with those big puppy eyes, remember not to give in, don't feed them any chocolate. It’s also very important to keep all chocolates out of your dogs reach. So even if you end up in a chocolate haze at least your canine friend wont be joining you. Feeding your furry friend chocolate may seem harmless and most people believe that the odd piece would be a treat for them, but in fact chocolate is toxic to dogs. Without getting too scientific, chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which comes from the same family as caffeine and although it is safe for humans to consume, a dog’s metabolism rate of theobromine is slower, which means they could become victims to theobromine chocolate poisoning. Local Taylor Palmer has had her dog Tyson for six years and said that she always knew that chocolate was dangerous for dogs but never to the extent of actual death. “Your pets are family members and you need to

• Pets are not to be fed chocolate this Easter treat them like any other family member,” she said. “For example, if someone in your family is allergic to something, you’re not going to feed it to them. “It is the same for your pets, people need to learn what can actually happen before it is too late. “Your pets are too special to be lost to a bit of chocolate you think won’t do any harm.” Although it would take a reasonable amount to harm your dog, it is always best not to feed them any as each dog will vary depending on weight, height, age etc. If a dog has eaten

a certain amount of chocolate, noticeable symptoms they will display after around two to four hours are excitability, irritability, increase in heart rate, increase in urination, vomiting, diarrhoea and muscle tremors. If your dog begins to show any of these these symptoms and you believe they have consumed chocolate then contact your vet for advice for the treatment required. There is an abundance of suitable treats that you can purchase which won’t have any negative outcomes for man’s (and woman's) best friend! Happy Easter from SAFE!

This Easter break, the team from Rio Tinto’s Robe Valley Operations and Pannawonica Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services are encouraging all drivers and their passengers to take a break and enjoy a free coffee or tea at the Robe Valley Fatigue Trailer. It will be at the corner of the Pannawonica Road and the North West Coastal Highway from 8am daily from Thursday, April 21 until Monday, April 25, with volunteers on hand to provide coffee and tea and chat to holiday makers, giving them the opportunity to stretch their legs and take a break from driving and travelling. Rio Tinto Robe Valley Operations emergency management and security advisor Matt Campbell said the trailer was a great way to raise awareness of road

safety and fatigue. “It’s a great safety initiative in an effort to reduce our road toll,” Mr Campbell said. “The presence of the trailer not only at driver reviver locations but also at community events and at emergency incidents, such a bush fires, reiterates the message and importance of fatigue management.” Pannawonica Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services lieutenant Philip Dee said the Robe Valley Fatigue Trailer was something the brigade regarded highly. “With the ever increasing amount of fatigue related incidents occuring on the roads in our district, our operations are generally of a reactive nature, so to have the opportunity to be proactive and get involved in this safety initiative means an opportunity to minimise the number of road incidents

we respond to,” he said. The Robe Valley Fatigue Trailer was thought up by Bobby Whitton in 2009. It was then designed and built by Rio Tinto’s Robe Valley Operations employees and Pannawonica Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services in their own time, using funds from Rio Tinto and donations. Launched in January this year, the fatigue trailer has its own power, barbecue, refrigerator and abundant storage, and is based at the Pannawonica Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services Fire Station, where it is maintained. If you would like the Robe Valley Fatigue Trailer to be present at your community event or if you would like more information about the project please contact Mr Campbell on 0408 097 517 or Mr Whitton on 0417 949 557.

• Gap Ridge Industrial Estate - View towards breakdown area

New work started for Pilbara Cities initiative As part of the State Government’s Pilbara Cities initiative, civil works have started at the new Gap Ridge Industrial Estate in Karratha. Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the State Government, through LandCorp, was moving quickly to develop the first stage of the 268 hectares estate to boost the region’s supply of industrial land. “The Pilbara will play a key role in Western Australia’s next period of economic growth and the Gap Ridge Industrial Estate will ensure businesses can benefit from major

resource projects in the region,” Mr Grylls said. “The State Government is delivering on its commitment to create modern higher density centres in the Pilbara, supported by the delivery of light and general industrial land.” Gap Ridge Industrial Estate will assist with the expansion of existing industry as well as attracting new businesses to Karratha. North West MLA Vince Catania said new industrial estates attracted new investment and job opportunities.

Mr Catania said a major goal of the Pilbara Cities initiative was to diversify the economy by attracting new industries to the region and the provision of industrial land was a key to making this happen. More than half of the 41 lots as part of Stage 1 are already under contract. The remaining lots range from 3,600 square metres to 15 hectares and are priced from $907,500. Stage two will be available in the coming months.

Goodbye Charmaine By Courtney Bertling

• St Luke’s College and Karratha Senior High School students with the five guest speakers and Sharon McCawley from the Beacon Foundation

Career Snapshot for students The Beacon Foundation held a Career Snapshot for local high school students on Monday, April 11 exposing students to a range of career pathways and opportunites within the Sport and Recreation Industry. Students were put into small groups and listened to a variey of guest speakers talk about their job, career pathways, education, training and employment opportunites within the industry. Interacting with local people from industry in a small group setting, exposes students to positive role models while broadening their knowledge of the skills and training required in a variety of job rolls. Listening to local business people helps to create links between school and work and increases the relevance of the classroom curriculum to the ‘real

world’. Beacon WA Coordinator Northern Region Sharon McCawley said that the students being in small groups makes it more engaging. “It is a more one-on-one environment and they are open to ask questions openly,” she said. “The focus is on sport and recreation as a lot of students are interested in that for future careers. “It is a good opportunity to see first hand how the speakers got to where they are and what they had to achieve. “It takes the pressure off the students when they hear from other people’s perspective that it isn’t that hard and if you miss out of University there are always ways around it.” Karratha Senior High School

VET Coordinator Simon Pope said it gives the students information on what is out there. “It is a great opportunity and it gives them the idea of different types of careers in the industry, not just physical education teachers and personal trainers,” he said. “There is so much sport in country towns, even in the mining industry.” St Luke’s College physical education teacher Emily Forsyth said it makes the students realise they can go in any direction. “It also shows them what kind of support is out there for them,” she said. “Being able to see local professionals in their chosen career shows the students it’s not that hard to get into what they want to do as a career.”

University visits from Perth “They also learn how much support is available at university, this visit makes university more realistic for them.” St Luke’s Career Advisor Gail Elliott said when the year 12 students listen to the guest speakers they learn about university life and not just about the courses. “For year 11 students, it gives them an introduction into university and also gives them motivation towards aiming for their career direction. “As for the year ten students, it introduces the idea of what university is. “They know that it is out there, but they are not sure of how to get there.” St Luke’s College year 12 student Georgia Hay said the visit from the five different universities was very informative. “We have already visited the different universities and campus’, so it is good to actually

learn the structure of each place,” she said. Georgia Hay mentioned that at the moment she is interested in studying physiology at University of Western Australia. “But I never know, I could change my mind when my offers come through,” she said. “I was really stressing about university before the visit but now all the pressure and stress has gone.” Georgia Hay tells future students wanting to go to university and go through all the studying for exams to get their priorities right. “Look at what areas you are not so good at and focus on them first to boost your marks,” she said. “St Luke’s College is a great school to study at because it is a small school and it has a more friendly competition to push yourself and remind you where you want to be.”

• Students Geogria Hay and Hannah Napier with Kerina Puttman (UWA), Len Nielson (Curtin) and Tanya Harding (Murdock)

K

Karratha Senior High School and St Luke’s College students were able to stop stressing about university when five representers from different universities went to the schools to talk about life at university. Kerina Puttman from University of Western Australia, Tanya Harding from Murdock University, Len Nielson from Curtin University, Vicky Burford from Notre Dam University and Natalie Collins from Edith Cowan University took the time to answer any questions the students had. University of Western Australia representer Kerina Puttman said the purpose of the visit is to give local and regional students information on university. “It gives them a wide range of courses available for them,” she said. “They begin to realise that university is very flexible and it gets the pressure off them.

When you think of St Luke’s College you may think students, TEE scores, homework but when I think of the school I remember the first face I saw when I entered the administration building when I was 12 years old going to my year eight interview. I still remember Mrs Charmaine MacGowan’s face as I nervously waited to be interviewed by the Principal at the time Mr John Bormolini. Although this was back in 2002 I’ll never forget the words of ‘good luck’ Mrs MacGowan said as I entered the office. Now almost nine years has past since that day and it has come to say goodbye to the beloved office lady who made her place there back in 1994. She began part time work at the school in 1994 and it was in 2000 that she took up the role as full time administrator. She has seen so many students (like myself), teachers and principals come and go throughout the years. “I have even see children of past students come to this school,” she said. As I walked into the school on Wednesday, April 6 just two days before she was getting ready to leave, she showed me something with a stiff upper lip trying to hold back tears. An Aboriginal painting

done by one of the parents whose four children during nine years of schooling has met and was looked after by Charmaine. “It’s just so beautiful, it made me cry because it’s just so nice to be thought of like that,” she said. “It is so rewarding to see the children come in for their year eight interviews and to see them mature throughout the years. “It’s like watching the transition of a caterpillar to a butterfly.” Not only has she watched other people’s children grow up but also her own two daughters. “I got to see the parents perspective and a teachers perspective of the school,” she said. “We have a family joke going on where my two girls say that I must be a slow learner as they have been there, graduated and moved on where I haven’t.” It is very sad to see someone leave the school but you would never think Mrs MacGowan would, she is a very loyal staff member of St Luke’s College and she will be missed terribly. On behalf of all the students both former and present of St Luke’s College I would like to thank Charmaine MacGowan for all her hard work throughout the years and I hope she has a wonderful future with a lot more adventures to come.

ANZAC Day in Roebourne Like every year, we as Australians take the time to honour and remember both the fallen soldiers and the ones that are still with us today who risked their lives many years ago to keep all of us safe in our homes. This year, Roebourne will be holding their own ANZAC Day service on Roe Street on Monday, April 25. Roebourne ANZAC committee member Ruth Ellis said that Reverend Richard Goscombe will be at the ceremony along with the Roebourne Fire Brigade, Roebourne Police, members of the Pilbara Regiment and St John’s Ambulance. “There will be a gunfire breakfast after the service at the RVFB with donations greatly appreciated,” she said. There will also be a licensed bar from 7am to 12pm and twoup after breakfast with winnings going towards a legacy for the fallen soldiers’ families. For those who are wanting to come but have no way of getting there, don’t stress as there will be a bus pick up and drop off from Point Samson and Wickham. “Last year, we were able to raise over $1000 just from the two-up,” Ellis said. “All ex-service and community

members are encouraged to come by to help honour the brave soldiers that risked their own lives. “Anyone can come down to watch and lay a wreath.” Marchers must be at the Victoria Hotel at 6am ready for the march at 6.10am and the service at 6.15am.

Designs on the Pilbara By Elise Batchelor

• An ANZAC Day dawn service wil be held on Roe Street

Free Weekly 16 April 2011

The Pilbara has given birth to a new artist who is gaining attention for her striking resin jewellery. Eighteen months ago, New Zealand native Yanna Henry, creator of ‘Yanna’s Designs’, was running a successful condiments business in South Hedland. However, on the encouragement of a friend and with the wonders of the internet, she took her love of resin and decided to learn how to work with the product herself. “I have always loved the feel and look of resin,” Yanna said. “So I taught myself by watching YouTube videos and began making my own pieces at home.” Indeed, Yanna has been able to work from her kitchens, first in South Hedland and now Karratha, where she has recently moved with her family. “My husband can’t believe it,” she said. “I’m now working all day with resin and it gives me such a buzz to be creative with something I love.” Backed by her business qualifications, ‘Yanna’s Designs’ is taking off. The Karratha Visitor Centre is about to commence selling her work

in time for the upcoming tourist season. Fiona Collins from the Visitor Centre recalls loving Yanna’s work from first sight and took an immediate interest. “I was initially struck by the beauty and the colours in Yanna’s jewellery,” she said. “I like the idea of bringing a product to North West visitors that is small scale, local and, importantly, unique to the area.” Each piece takes Yanna one to three hours to complete. “It began with friends, then others noticing it. People have even asked for it while it’s still drying,” she said. Yanna’s inspiration for colour comes from her surroundings. “I love my work to be a reflection of the natural tones we have in the Pilbara,” she said. “Oranges and reds, earthy browns, yellows and turquoise feature in many of her pieces. “After all, we’re always in summer up here.” Her products, which range from $15 to $65, include pendants, bracelets, Swarovski pearl necklaces and what she calls ‘chunky funky’ cross necklaces.

• Yanna Henry wearing one her her resin designs There are also small bowls, key rings and even resin greeting cards. The Visitor Centre will launch her range this Thursday and Yanna will also be selling her work at the Port Hedland West End Markets and Yacht Club Markets over the winter season. A revamped website will be open for business soon.

No second service on ANZAC Day In response to ANZAC Day falling on Easter Monday in 2011, Karratha event organisers, the Karratha RSL Sub Branch, have elected not to hold a second service later in the day. Roebourne Shire Council President Nicole Lockwood said only a dawn service and march would be held this year in Karratha with large numbers of local residents expected to be out of town for the extended Easter break. “The Karratha RSL Sub Branch will hold a dawn service at the memorial in front of the Shire of Roebourne offices

on Welcome Road at 6am, with support from the Shire,” Councillor Lockwood said. “A march will precede the service and those wishing to march are requested to form up at 5.30am on Welcome Road, west of Klenk Street. “The march will commence at 5.40am and finish at the memorial. “Former and serving military personnel, emergency services personnel and other service organizations are encouraged to attend the march and dawn service. Wreaths will be laid during the service.”

Welcome Road will be closed to all vehicles between Sharpe Avenue and Hedland Place and Klenk Street from 5.25am until 6.30am. Klenk Street will also be closed to traffic at this time. A gunfire breakfast will be immediately after the dawn service and the public is invited to attend fellowship later in the morning at the RSL Hall on Gawthorne Road, Millars Well, with access via Dwyer Place. Hedland Mobile Windscreens Meet Chris May and Maxine Hartshorn, owners of the friendly family run Hedland Mobile Windscreens in Wedgefield. Hedland Mobile Windscreens does exactly what it says on the tin, mobile windscreen replacements, servicing the entire Hedland area. A friendly outgoing couple, Chris and Maxine are the brains behind the outfit. Chris and Maxine set up Hedland Mobile Windscreens in 2007, after recognising a much needed gap in the market. “When you’ve got a broken windscreen it’s not like you can drive anywhere to fix it,” explains Maxine, “So we set up Hedland Mobile Windscreens to service both the private and the commercial sector.” “We provide a broad spectrum of services,” Chris explains. “From mums wanting to get their windscreens fixed quickly and safely so they can take their children to and from school; “Haulage and courier companies who need to keep their vehicles on the road; to the mining sector who need to keep the LV’s and large machinery working as it can cost thousands of dollars per day in down time.” “We’ve got a specifically developed mine compliant truck which we use to visit the mine sites,” adds Maxine.

“We get out to remote sites and fix the problem in one visit, saving them a fortune in downtime.” Chris was bought up in Finuncane Island in the 70’s, Chris always called the region home, and finally returned to his roots in 2007 with his partner Maxine. The pair hasn’t looked back since and are both now proud to call Hedland home. “We’re proud to get involved in local events, we support children’s parties through the local radio, and we also support the local Golf Club,” Chris explains. “Although neither of us can play!” laughs Maxine. Hedland Mobile Windscreens will come to you wherever you are, however if you are ever in the area, it is worth popping down to the main warehouse to meet the whole team and see first hand the enthusiasm and experience there is behind the scenes. “We’ve got a fantastic team with us here,” a proud Chris explains. “Our new apprentice Kael Thompson is doing a great job, and our two fitters David Levingston and Danny Wilson both have a wealth of experience in their roles. “And Sue Andrews is our account guru!” Next time you’re stuck with a broken windscreen, give Chris and Maxine a call on 9172 5226 and they’ll come straight to the rescue!

Talented young author and illustrator to sign books By Marelize White Ever since childhood, Hayley Welsh, now 25, has always enjoyed writing and illustrating. It was a final year university project that ignited the idea of her own illustrated book. Hayley’s first children’s book ‘This Way Up’ was launched in November 2010 and has foreign co-editions in the UK and France, selling over 6000 copies. Hayley will be signing copies of her book at Angus and Robertson on April 23 and have some original artwork and dummy books to show how books are made.

“The book signing is a great chance to ask questions about how books are made, illustrated, writing of children’s books and how to approach publishers,” she said. For a young and particularly talented author/ illustrator, it is truly a remarkable accomplishment. “Originally this was a university project, which I then approached publisher’s with,” she said. This pop-up book was snapped up by Hodder Children’s Books in 2008, who also published the best seller ‘Vampire Diaries’ and Enid Bylton’s ‘Famous Five’. Hayley has also worked with paper Engineer, Corina

Fletcher who designed the ‘Charlie and Lola’ pop-up books. Her inspiration comes from personal experiences and thinking back about what she enjoyed most about the innocence of childhood. “Writing for children is the perfect excuse to escape being a grown up,” she said. Although Hayley always had a natural flair for painting and drawing, she did love completing her formal art and design studies. She is currently working on a few books, all of which are at different stages. “I get new ideas all the time which are scribbled down all over the place,” she said.

• Hayley Welsh will be at Angus and Robertson on April 23. Hayley will be providing a freelance Illustrated service to the Karratha community. Including caricatures and portraits for birthday cards, wedding invitations or personalised storyboards.

For a chance to see this remarkable young talent at work head down to Angus and Robertson on Saturday, April 23 from 10 am till 12 noon. Visit www.hayleywelsh.com for more information.

Don’t let this Easter be your last, warns NTC Although Easter can be a time of celebration and family, it can also be a time of tragedy due to deaths on our roads, warns the National Transport Commission. Unfamiliar roads and longer distances travelled to reach holiday destinations can increase the risk of being involved in fatal car crashes during the Easter period. NTC Chief Executive Nick Dimopoulos is using Easter as a time to also warn drivers of the risks associated with drink driving, speeding and fatigue. “Drivers need to plan in advance and consider alternatives in order to get home safely for Easter,” he said. “The biggest killers on our roads are speed, fatigue and drink driving. Stick to speed limits, avoid driving fatigued and avoid driving under the influence. “You owe it to yourself

and your family to stay safe this Easter.” Here are some tips the NTC are promoting for keeping safe on Australian roads this Easter: Ensure your vehicle is fully serviced and in a driveable condition, particularly if you are driving long distances. Make sure you take a break every two hours or whenever you are feeling tired. Organise to have an alternate driver if you think you may be drinking. Ensure you have enough room and do not speed when attempting to overtake other vehicles, especially larger vehicles such as trucks and caravans. Avoid rushing on the roads by planning well and familiarising yourself with the road conditions. Remember that being late is better than not arriving at all.

Newborn hearing program exceeds target The WA Newborn Hearing Screening Program has recently exceeded the 95 per cent screening target for babies across the State. Ninety-seven per cent of babies born in public metropolitan hospitals and 96 per cent born in country hospitals were screened in late 2010 bringing the figures in line with national standards being developed as advised by the Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council. Health Minister Kim Hames said the State Government’s expansion of the service from five to 29 public maternity hospitals had seen a dramatic improvement in screening rates. The program, run by the Child and Adolescent Health Service with support from the WA Country Health Service in rural and remote areas, is now rolled out State-wide. Member for North West Vincent Catania MLA commended the Program which is being run successfully at Nickol Bay Hospital in Karratha. “This program is essential in rural

areas such as Karratha in order to detect any hearing impairments that a child may have at birth” he said. More than 139,000 newborn babies have been screened through the program to determine whether they have any hearing abnormalities so they can be identified and managed as soon as possible. A non-invasive device, which delivers a soft clicking sound through ear-phones and picks up the baby’s response through sensors on their skin, is used to screen newborn babies from 12-hours-old. “Hearing loss can be a debilitating disability so identifying and managing these babies early significantly improves their chances of meeting positive language and speech outcomes,” Dr Hames said. “In Western Australia, one in 1,000 babies tested have some type of hearing impairment. “By managing issues early with support such as sign language, hearing aids or cochlear implants, we can

pilbaraecho Delivered fresh every week.

• Vincent Catania help these children to reach their full potential in speech, language and cognitive ability.” World leaders in newborn hearing screening will gather in Fremantle this weekend for the sixth Australasian Newborn Hearing Screening Conference. The conference, held at the Esplanade Hotel, will include keynote speeches from experts from WA, Australia and around the globe and will serve as a platform to discuss the latest diagnostic equipment and techniques, cochlear implantation and how to address challenges in rural and remote regions.

WASO on the road On Monday April 11, locals were invited to be entertainment by the smoothing rhythms of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) at the Roebourne Community Hall. Four members of WASO who performed on the night includ Rebecca White (violin), Cerys Tooby (violin), Nik Babic (viola) and Oliver McAslan (cello) performed in front of more 50 people. Performing from the Argentina style Tango, the Russian style Notturno and the swoon like mood feeling of Air by Bach Suite Number Three, the audience were never bored. This project is part of WASO’s Discover! Education and Outreach program and it demonstrates the Orchestra’s ability to contribute musically to the lives of West Australians, many of whom may never get a chance to experience live classical music.

WASO Presenter of the night Prue Ashurt said that the group love the sight of this ‘amazing’ country side. “The range and mis of different colours is so beautiful,” she said. “We are traveling to five different schools around the region to enrich the younger generation with this beautiful music.” During the night Ashurst mentioned to the audience to keep an eye on the musicians. With that note you could see the great communication between the four, making eye contact and a wink or two during the performance. Local, Graeme Mcfarland said you could see how into the performance the musicians were. “They really put their heart and soul into the music when the play,” he said. “They obviously love what

they do and they do an amazing job at it.” WASO cello musician Oliver McAslan told the audience that even though the country is so beautiful, the heat does take its toll on their instruments. “Due to the amount of heat up here, the instruments go out of tune very easily,” he said. Following the performance, locals were able to join the musicians on stage for a chance to talk to them about music, their instruments and their lives as members of WASO. Chevron Australia Manager Community Engagement and Corporate Responsibility Sakari Morrison said the Chevron operated Gorgon Project has entered into a partnership with WASO to support the growth and development of WASO’s regional programs that reach and benefit local communities at a grass roots level, in particular focusing on disadvantaged youth.

• WASO Musicians performed at the Roebourne Community Hall on Monday, April 11 “The WASO on the Road tour to the Pilbara Region aligns with one of our key focus areas - early education,” she said. “This partnership provides a unique opportunity for the Project to partner with WASO to support ensembles of musicians

to visit schools in rural and remote areas, offering in-school workshops for local children at no cost to the community.” WASO on the Road Pilbara Tour is supported by Chevron and the Gorgon Project.

North West Open last weekend

Karratha Aquatic Centre was a buzz last weekend with almost 200 competitors and their families gathering at the pool to compete and cheer on team mates in the annual North West Open. Teams travelled from all over the state to compete in the swimming competition. This year saw 10 clubs compete in the event which ensured a fantastic atmosphere and guaranteed some competitive contests. As usual, there were many exciting races with some very close finishes and some fantastic personal best times achieved. The first event of the day saw Macie Bennetts of Karratha taking gold, only a second ahead of Kirsten Parker of Newman in the women’s 400m freestyle. This set the tone for the rest of the meet with many exciting and close races contested over the weekend. North West Open is an individual event which encourages all swimmers to have a go. For many Karratha swimmers it was their first taste of competitive swimming. The lead up to the competition was a little unusual for the Karratha Swimming Club with the pool only opening five days before the competition began. Training had been disrupted throughout the season with the late opening of the pool in 2010 and with the pool closure due to the tornado in February. The club had only managed to hold two time trial nights this year.

Despite such a disruptive season, swimmers still managed to perform brilliantly, with almost all swimmers doing personal best times in an event. Newcomers to competitive swimming, Heath Collins, Tahlia Crowhurst, Shaela Doherty, Jacynta Felix, Isobel Norris and Makayla Deacon all managed to shave over 15 seconds off their personal best times. More seasoned swimmers, Brennan Stewart, Macie Bennetts, Mikaela Rice, Jack Clarke, Benjamin Waddington and Rebecca Machado also managed to do the same. Macie Bennetts (12) of Karratha, Sean Clake (13) of Newman, Harrison Wass (10) of Hedland, Carly Chambers (11) of Carnarvon, Joe Handscombe (14), Belinda Cole (10) and Talara-Jade Dixon (14) all of Broome, dominated the pool in their respective age groups and claimed a multitude of medals and achieved some impressive times. Twelve year old boys, Ayden Saylor and Daniel Cross from Wickham, Austin Williams from Hedland and Drew Maslin from Carnarvon also provided some close competition over the weekend with all four swimmers gaining gold in at least one event, with many close finishes for the timekeepers. With the freestyle events on the final day of competition, time keepers were kept on their toes again with many close finishes. Thirteen year old Amara Fowke won the women’s fastest 11-13 year old 100m trophy, with a time of 1.16.29, a mere one tenth of a second

ahead of Macie Bennetts and Carnarvon’s Sarah Cvitan. Eight year old Keldon Wain narrowly missed out on a North West Open record, by 8/10ths of a second in the 50m freestyle with a time of 39.02. Karratha Amateur Swimming Club president Sara McRobb congratulated all those who competed and acknowledged the outstanding efforts put in by all the dedicated parents, coaches and committee members. She was very pleased with how well the event ran. With such uncertainty hanging over the event only two weeks before, she said it was fantastic to see all the members of the club come together and pitch in to help organize the weekend. One such dedicated parent and committee member, James Fowke even spent the nights over the weekend down at the aquatic centre to ensure the club’s equipment and pool set up stayed secure. The end of the North West Open also brings together the end of the swimming season for the Karratha Amateur Swimming club. The club would like to thank its sponsors for the 2010/2011 season and also thank coaches Sandi Clarke, Erin Shaylor, Kylie Rann Amanda Bloomfield, Sara McRobb and Kristi Thomas and all the committee and parent volunteers for their hard work and dedication. If you would like to be involved with the Karratha Amateur Swimming Club in the 2011/2012 season, please email club president Sara McRobb at kasc@westnet.com. au to register your interest.

Pirtek Fishing Challenge Last Sunday the 10 April, the 2011 Pirtek Fishing Challenge was held and was well supported locally with several boats heading out to try to catch this year’s target North West species which was Nor West Snapper and Spangled Emperor. The Challenge is a unique Australia wide Fishing competition which raises money and awareness for prostate cancer, one of the leading causes of cancer in men in Australia. The longest fish wins the main state prize, there are also junior prizes on offer. It was just $20 to enter for a fantastic prize pool of in excess of $135,000 including lucky angler prizes just for entering. Several competitors met back at the Hampton Harbour Boat and Sailing Club after fishing for a get together and to enter the local Pilbara Challenge where entrants who caught the longest fish locally were awarded on the spot fantastic prizes from Pirtek Karratha and Woodside Energy Limited. Tiffiny Kelly won the local female section with a 42cm Spangled Emperor, Chris Brown took out the male section with a 44cm Blue Lined Emperor (NW Snapper).

Both Chris and Tiffiny won fantastic Pirtek Ice boxes. No junior anglers presented any capture photos so this category was not awarded. The catch of the day and overall local winner was Andrew Carpenter with a 57cm Spangled Emperor. This was quite a feat since the fish was also caught on 3 Kg line class. Andrew was also fishing the Nickol Bay Sportfishing Clubs Presidents Cup line class competition at the same time which was held over the two day weekend and for his good work won an engraved Ferral Stik custom fishing rod for the overall champ courtesy of Woodside Energy Limited. There were also some give aways of lures, snacks and Pirtek products for those who attended. The Nickol Bay Sportfishing Club sincerely thanks Danni and the team at Pirtek Karratha and Woodside Energy and all participants for their support of this worthy event and looks forward to next years Pirtek Fishing Challenge. The Nickol Bay Sportfishing Clubs 2011 Presidents Cup winner is Wayne Brown who

managed to catch several different species of sportfish to claim the title. The Presidents Cup is one of the most eagerly anticipated Nickol Bay Sportfishing Club competitions and as always for this competition there was a good turnout from the members. Pirtek are also this years naming sponsor of the clubs Billfish Shootout on the 4,5 and 6 June (Foundation Day Long Weekend). Entries and rules can be downloaded from http:// ansa.karratha.com, the club is looking forward to another well supported and successful event. By Ben Clarke The inaugural grand final of Hedland Water Polo’s Fast Five season will be a rematch of last season’s premiership decider. Blackstars and Dragons will lock horns to vie for the men’s title. The two teams created one of the closest and hardest matches played in Hedland in last season’s grand final and it is destined to be a similar tussle this Friday. The home and away season concluded last Friday with White Pointers womens, Dragons women and Dragons men securing victories. In the men’s game, Blackstars had the better of the Dragons for most of the night, leading five – three at three quarter time. However, the Dragons produced a sensational last quarter to pile on four goals while holding the Blackstars goalless.

The quality of the match gave every indication that the grand final between these two teams will be a cracker. Mark Field and Steve Brown were the best players for Dragons while Dan Lacey battled hard for the Blackstars. Barracudas tackled White Pointers in the second men’s game but were outclassed. The Pointers were able to score at will and ran away comfortable victors. Nathan Hart and Tristen Myers were the better players for Pointers with Reece Cirulis working hard to keep Barracudas in the match. In the women’s competition, White Pointers easily accounted for the Mantas 17 – one. The victory will give the girls a lot of confidence as they prepare for the grand final against Dragons. Erin Ramirez and Kathryn Schwalger were outstanding

for Pointers while Kelly Pronysyn tried hard for Mantas. Dragons took on an undermanned Seafollies and accounted for them quite easily. The Follies tried hard but the experience of the Dragons proved to be too great as they ran out comfortable victors. The polo season culminates in the mens and womens grand final matches this Friday night. The women’s game will commence at 6:30 and the men’s at 7:30. The matches will be a spectacle as the fast five format creates a free flowing style of polo. The association would like to encourage spectators to come down and enjoy the BBQ and refreshments while watching some high quality water polo and help wind up the season.

Karratha riders to compete at national titles By Nick Muller BMX racing may stop at the Karratha BMX Club for the school holidays but five riders will travel to Cairns to compete in the BMX National Titles. These riders have been training up to three times a week since returning from the State Titles held at the beginning of March. The National Title will be held in Cairns from April 27 until May 1 with riders from around Australia who have competed in the State Titles competing for an Australian Plate. The five Karratha BMX riders are Macie Bennetts, Teagan Singer, Dylan Bennetts, Isaac Lyon and Rodney Gethin. All of the riders have been enjoying the training and although it has been hard at times they hope that the effort that they have put in pays off. These riders are all hoping to return from the National with a top eight plate which would rank them in the Australian top eight. Teagan is hoping for a

top eight finish and believes riding in Karratha has helped her become more aggressive and pushy on the track. After riding against the boys on a Friday night Teagan is sure to be able to hold her own against the girls in Cairns. Macie is hoping to stay on her bike and progress to the finals for the chance of an Australian plate. Macie also rides against the boys in Karratha so she can show the girls over there that she can hold her line on the track. Rodney is the old boy from Karratha who is hoping to knock out some of the competition and make the finals with his eyes set on a top eight finish. Rodney has been training hard and is the dominant rider in his class at the Club at the moment. With over one hundred riders taking to the track for the last two Friday nights of racing at the Karratha BMX Club these riders have had the opportunity to be on the start with seven other riders which has been excellent practice for the Nationals.

By Michelle Bennett This week’s competition at Karratha Golf Club was the Monthly Mug event sponsored by the Pilbara Motor Group. A strong field of 67 golfers turned up to welcome in the first 18 Hole Stroke Event of the Winter Season. Conditions were testing with the strong winds but they soon died down as the afternoon progressed and some great results were produced. In the novelty prizes, the nearest to the pin on Hole three was Sunan, Rob Smith on Hole eight and Graham Munro on Hole 11. Laurel Chadwick had a great day with nearest to the pin on Hole 16 and also took out the ladies longest drive
