Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates The excitement is building for two major tournaments coming up at Exmouth Game Fishing Club. The Australian International Billfish Tournament is a tag-and-release event run over three days from March 10-12. There have been some incredible catches lately, including the pending state and Australian record blue marlin that was caught by Rowan Smith on Reel Teaser last week. At 368.2kg it is now the largest marlin caught in Western Australia. The fish was fully filleted and given out to many people in Exmouth. Interestingly, in the recent past a few big blue marlin this size have washed up on the beaches in Albany. Sadly, these fish have had to be dumped as the flesh had rotted, and it is believed they have died from natural causes. Another awesome billfish catch was

that of a broadbill swordfish caught onboard Mahi Mahi III last week. This fish weighed 63.9kg and is another pending record. Not many people have caught these deep-sea fish and skipper Bernie Vale, who has won top tagging captain in the Indian Ocean several times through the Billfish Foundation, is stoked to add this species to his own records. Meanwhile on the wide open seas, anglers chasing billfish have been getting into yellowfin tuna and mahi mahi, which is even more exciting for anglers chasing these species in the Gamex tournament, which runs from March 15-22. These two major events are sure to gain plenty of attention this year, given that we are already getting such good results of billfish being tagged and various other species being encountered.

On the shorefront, we have had schools of predatory fish coming to the marina this last week. If you’re keen enough to walk the distance out to the end of the rock wall at the entrance to the harbour, you could be rewarded with some great fish and amazing visual activity. There have been schools of trevally and queenfish hammering bait close to the walls. Plus the schools of long-tail and mack tuna have been within casting range at times. The tuna are responding well to the Arma chisel 30g lures, while the trevally and queenfish have been responding well to poppers and soft plastics. It can be very exhilarating when the fish boil on the surface as they go in to a feeding frenzy, but it can also be frustrating if you miss the bite!

The Pirates sailed into th Hedland baseball grand final with a convincing win over the Sharks, setting up a three-game series against league-leaders the Swans from on March 5. Christian Wise carved out the win for the Pirates, striking out no less than 13 Sharks batters in just six innings and conceding three hits in the 16 runs to one mercy-rule win. Both sides fielded understrength teams, but the Pirates’ hitting made a huge difference as they pounded out 15 safe hits and scored eight times in the second innings. Nick Kennedy led the Pirates spree with a triple, Photohitting by Benand Leahy double single from four at bats to drive in four runners. The result puts the Pirates in

line for their seventh successive premiership, having won the big prize every year since 2007. But this year’s opponents the Swans will not be pushovers. They will be pulling out all the stops to break their 22-year drought, having last put their name on the trophy in 1992. Last weekend also featured the Association Awards presentation, with the Swans’ Kyle Edwards taking home the major prize of the night, voted the competition’s fairest and best player. The Pirates’ Kevin Charles was runner-up and also picked up the Batting and Earned Run Average trophies. Ray Wasley and Ronnie Budd shared the Runs Batted In trophy with 13 apiece, while Ashliegh Christensen topped stolen bases with nine.

The Home Run award saw Charles, Ash Christensen, Nathan Nordmann and Andre Chapman tie it up with two apiece. The Sharks’ Darren Derschow was judged to be the Most Valuable Player by the umpires. The Swans’ Kane Edwards also added to the Edwards family spoils by taking out the Junior of the Year. Teammate Kurt Ballantyne was judged best under-21 player, while Daniel Page from the Sharks won the Rookie award and the Brewers’ Kieran Deall collected the Best First Year Player prize.

Voting arrangements for fly-in, fly-out workers

By Ben Leahy More than 120 businesses from across WA took part in a workshop in Karratha last Thursday to find out how they can supply services and materials to the Gorgon and Wheatstone projects. Gorgon will be Australia’s largest liquefied natural gas project and is expected to cost $54 billion while Wheatstone will be a $29 billion project. The two Chevronoperated projects will produce 400,000 barrels a day at full capacity. To help local businesses take part in the projects, commissioning contractor Bechtel gave a presentation about the processes that companies can follow to secure engineering, construction and supply contracts. The state government’s Department of Commerce organised

the workshop in partnership with Chevron Australia. Commerce Minister Michael Mischin said it is the third workshop to be held as part of the industry facilitation and support program (IFSP) and each one has been successful in helping local businesses secure contracts. “The IFSP is designed to enable companies to become more competitive in securing contract opportunities presented by major projects, such as gas developments like Gorgon and Wheatstone,” Mr Mischin said. “Expansion in the Pilbara, and indeed all of Western Australia, continues at pace and there are a range of opportunities being created. “We’re entering a new and different phase of growth and this workshop was a great way to prepare business for that next step. “I commend

Chevron for participating in this event and working with the state government to inform local suppliers about potential opportunities. “The high number and range of local business at today’s event demonstrates the interest and confidence in the region’s future.” The IFSP also enables companies to apply for dollar-for-dollar assistance towards business improvement activities, with more than 150 companies receiving assistance since 2011. The state government said a total of 89 funding recipients have completed projects, which has resulted in them winning $155 million in contracts and creating 275 new employment opportunities, including 22 apprenticeship opportunities. Pilbara company Oceanic Offshore received IFSP funding

in 2011, which it used to purchase specialised underwater equipment. This allowed the company to then secure about $1.5 million in contracts working with underwater gas pipelines.

Twist of fate brings med student full circle By Ben Leahy

Dr Ganesan Sakarapani delivered Bijit Munshi – now his mentee at Port Hedland hospital – in Perth in 1992.

You could call it the circle of life after new medical student Bijit Munshi recently discovered he has an unexpected connection to his mentor Dr Ganesan Sakarapani. Bijit is one of six new medical students undertaking a year of training in Hedland with the Rural Clinical School of Western Australia, and was featured in a story in the Echo in January. The program encourages fifth-year students to train in regional centres rather than in the city and has proven a great success, with its students achieving better results than their city-placed counterparts. The experience has been no different for Bijit, and he was recently home in Perth telling his dad Biswajit he was going well in his studies, when he got an unexpected surprise. “(Bijit) was telling me about how much he was enjoying life in a new setting, and all that he was learning under the guidance of some excellent mentors, one being Dr G Sankarapani, the chief medical officer at Port

Hedland hospital,” dad Biswajit said. “I recalled immediately that a Dr Sakarapani had delivered Bijit at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth back in 1992. “To back it up, I produced a couple of pictures. “True enough, there was Bijit in his mum’s arms, the midwife, and a young beaming Dr Sankarapani!” The pleasant surprise has Bijit refusing to rule out the hand of fate. “It was strange … and I definitely think there is a spiritual connection there in the way that somebody who has delivered you as a baby is now your teacher,” he said. “Dr Sakarapani agreed that it is a great story when I told him about it.” The story is also not as unique in Australian hospitals as it might sound. Bijit said he has now been hearing about a senior doctor at Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth, who years ago delivered many of the doctors that now work at the hospital as specialists. Talk about life coming full circle.

East Pilbara Update – Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara President’s Message

Thank you for taking the time to read the latest news from the Shire of East Pilbara. It’s been more than 12 months now that Newman Airport introduced paid parking to the facility. This also means that many residents of the East Pilbara will need to renew their Annual Resident Concession Card for Access to Long Term Car Parks. Your card will need to be renewed on the anniversary of the 12 months since obtaining your card. The Shire offices in Newman and Marble Bar will be able to assist with the renewal of your card. Residents must provide proof of residency to collect their card and are entitled to 14 days free parking at the airport each year. It’s important to note that we (at the administration building) can’t check the balances of these cards and they will need to be checked through the airport directly. I must also offer my congratulations to Councillor Gerry Parsons who was recently awarded Newman’s International Woman on the Year award for her dedication to her community. Congratulations Gerry! The new outdoor cinema in Marble Bar was unveiled last weekend as part of Harmony Day celebrations and we are looking forward to having more outdoor screenings in Marble Bar in the future, so stay tuned for more information. It’s Anzac Day next month and the Shire of East Pilbara will be planning memorial services in Newman, Nullagine and Marble Bar on April 25. More information about these events will be posted on our website as information become available. www.eastpilbara.wa.gov.au Indoor Sports has seen a huge revival in Newman recently with more than 120 people signing up for indoor competitions of futsal and basketball. If you would like to participate in indoor sporting competitions at the Newman Recreation Centre please call the centre on (08) 9177 8075. I would also like to personally wish Hollie Patching the best of luck as she competes in the Youth World Championships (Equestrian) in July in the USA. Hollie, you are a great role model for the youth of the East Pilbara and I thank you for all your hard work and dedication. Good Luck! Lynne Craigie – Shire President

East Pilbara Teenager in World Equestrian Championships

Councillor Gerry Parsons (South Ward) was recently awarded the Newman International Woman of the Year Award for her dedication and hard work to her community. Congratulations Gerry!

The East Pilbara will be soon represented on the world stage when teenager Hollie Patching competes at the Equestrian World Youth Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, USA in July this year. The sixteen year old Newman teenager has been granted sponsorship by the Shire of East Pilbara to help her fulfill her dreams of a World Championship trophy after she was invited to represent Western Australia at the Championships. “The Shire of East Pilbara is very happy to support Hollie at the Youth World Championships and we are thrilled that such a dedicated, hard-working and talented individual is representing the East Pilbara on a world stage,” said Shire of East Pilbara Chief Executive Officer Allen Cooper. “Being a dedicated youth rider presents the chance to show other youth all over Australia that ambition is worth having, that dreams are worth pursuing and that bars should be set high and jumped over,” said Hollie. Best of luck Hollie!

Pilbara families turn to au pairs to look after their children Karratha girls Gemma and Caiti Thoms have never been to Germany, yet they can still use the German language to ask what is for dinner. And it’s not surprising – the two girls aged 6 and 10 have had German au pairs cooking and caring for them for much of their lives. For the Thoms family, au pairs – live-in workers who are often young women visiting from Europe on short holidays – have now become an “irreplaceable” alternative to conventional childcare services. “My wife and I have very unpredictable and busy work schedules,” Mr Thoms said. “With au pairs, our children are always being fed, picked up and dropped off to school, and they are having their clothes ironed, their rooms tidied and (supervision to see that) their homework is done.” “It’s fabulous.” And the Thoms family are not the only ones employing au pairs. With Pilbara parents having traditionally faced long waiting lists and high costs to access childcare services, more local families are seeing au pairs as an attractive alternative. “Our daughter had her tenth birthday last Saturday and there were six au pairs helping out at the party,” Mr Thoms said. “There are about 30 to 40 German au pairs in Karratha.” Stephanie Prenzlau from the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) matches au pairs with families and said her company has had “enormous”

growth in the Pilbara in the past couple of years. “Out of the 500 or so girls we will be placing this year, probably about 10 per cent will be in that area (in Hedland, Karratha and Newman),” Ms Prenzlau said. She said the au pairs were most often German, English, French, Swedish and South Korean girls in their early ’20s, although male au pairs were becoming popular with families with boys. When sourced through an agency, the au pairs have previous childcare experience and perform up to 45 hours per week of childcare related household duties with one and a half days off. In return, the families pay them a wage and do not charge them for food or accommodation. Ms Prenzlau said the flexible working hours provided by au pairs was ideal for shiftworking Pilbara families with extra space in their homes. She also claims au pairs are a cheaper childcare option. “Yes, these families in mining earn good money, but having an au pair is always cheaper than having one or two children in full time day care,” Ms Prenzlau said. Mr Thoms agrees. He put his two older children, now 19 and 21, through childcare in Sydney 17-years ago. “Back then it was costing me $200 a day – $100 per child – and we were charged $1 per minute if we were late to pick them up,” he said. “Our whole lives ran around the childcare system.” Being an au pair also gives

• David, Gemma and Caiti Thoms with German au pair Melanie Stolz. girls like English woman Faye Hurley, who recently moved to Karratha from Perth with her host family, the chance to have a unique Australian experience. “At first I was worried about Karratha because I thought I am going to be in the middle of nowhere, but there is loads of fishing, boating and four wheel driving to do,” Ms Hurley said. “Honestly, I’ve made more friends here than in Perth because there are tonnes of au pairs here.” And while Mr Thoms has heard stories of au pairs having bad experiences with their employers, he said the girls staying at his home often grow to feel like they are part of the family. He said his two young daughters can now speak and understand a lot of German, and are also learning other skills from their au pairs. “Melanie, the current au pair we have, is a pianist and so she is teaching our 10-year-old Gemma to play piano because she has always wanted to learn,” Mr Thoms said.

Award encourages Rio executive to aim for the top By Ben Leahy Rio Tinto’s Tom Price mining operations general manager Sinead Kaufman has won a major award in recognition of her success leading a high-profile business operation. Ms Kaufman was awarded the Chief Executive Women Scholarship, which will enable her to complete an advanced management program in France, valued at $55,000. The awards are designed to help women to continue succeeding in management positions and are presented by Chief Executive Women, a group which represents

Australia’s 300 most senior women from the corporate, public service, academic and not-for-profit sectors. Ms Kaufman said the prize would help her continue to set a path in mining that other women can follow. “There has only ever been a minority of women in mining, and very few at the top,” Ms Kaufman said. “It’s very important women do courses such as this AMP (advanced management program) to see that they can take the next step up. “I often make decisions as a leader in isolation given the remote location, so I am

very much looking forward to challenging how I make decisions and my thinking through attending the AMP.” CEW has awarded more than 50 scholarships in the past three years, with 16 scholarships valued at $250,000 awarded this year alone. Ms Kaufman’s scholarship was this year’s top prize. “We are passionate about providing these valuable opportunities for women to network on the global stage, to boost their leadership skills and gain the confidence to aim for the C-suite jobs,” CEW president Christine Christian said.

Congratulations

to the Year 12 CLASS OF 2013 The Woodside-operated North West Shelf Project is proud to support the Karratha Education Initiative. The Woodside-operated North West Shelf Project would like to congratulate the students at Karratha Senior High School and St Luke’s College. In 2013, both schools achieved outstanding results. A total of 81 students from both schools achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking (ATAR) and all scored high enough to gain entry into university.

Karratha Senior High School achieved the highest mean ATAR of all Pilbara public schools in 2013.

The students, dedicated teaching and support staff and parents are to be commended on such an achievement and we wish the students well in their future endeavours.

Karratha Senior High School was in the top 50 Vocational Education and Training (VET) schools in Western Australia for 2013 and a St Luke’s student received a Certificate of Excellence in VET.

Niall Myles Woodside Senior Vice President North West Shelf

Of these students, 14 achieved a score of 80 or more in their exams and nine students achieved an ATAR of 90 or more.

Shire’s tender process gives a local favour More than 60 local business people attended the Shire of Roebourne’s latest business breakfast to gain tips on how to win more work from local government. The topic was timely following changes to the shire’s Regional Price Preference Policy that were approved by councillors at the March council meeting. The Regional Price Preference Policy allows the shire to give local companies a price advantage of up to 10 per cent when submitting tenders for shire work. So if a local business and one from outside the region quote the same price to complete a contract, the shire will look upon the proposal by the local business as if it is

Small businesses and not-for-profit organisations are continuing to benefit from are a series of workshops being organised by the Pilbara Institute and West Pilbara Small Business Centre. The latest workshop held at the Pilbara Institute’s campus last Thursday was designed to help small businesses understand their superannuation obligations to their employees. It followed on from a workshop earlier this month in which experts from Cleary Hoare Solicitors explained how small businesses can set up legal frameworks to protect their assets during the start-up phase of their operations. Pilbara resident Dustin Goldsworthy is looking to start a business in the region and said he was keen to find out more about the potential hurdles he will face as he grows. “You’ve got to manage risk in any investment, particularly if it is new and unknown, so this workshop was

Teenyboppers dance it up at Youth Shed

Pizza was a crowd pleaser.

By Ben Leahy Karratha and Roebourne kids are not letting the adults have all the fun, with more than 40 teens and juniors turning out for a dance party at the Youth Shed on March 21. Local teens acted as DJs behind the decks, which ensured the music was in safe

hands and led to the girls and boys challenging each other to a dance-off. Yaandina community services worker Kirsty Levi said the dance moves had the oldies in the room in awe. “We have some talented dancers in the Pilbara,” she said. And once the exhausting showdown on the dance floor

had subsided, attention quickly shifted to the round of pizzas donated by Eagle Boys. The party was jointly organised by Yaandina, the Shire of Roebourne, the state government’s Corrective Services Youth Justice and the Salvation Army. Such events are held regularly to entertain local youths and help get them active in the community.

St Luke’s College recently held its annual training day to help the school’s new student leadership committee develop their skills. Leadership and decision making is a central theme in the education of all students at St Luke’s College. But on top of this, the school also holds an annual day for school leaders serving on the student body, in which they take part in public speaking,

decision-making and teambuilding exercises. These students will be expected to perform a number of roles in the year ahead. These can include organising entertainment, activities and lunchtime sports programs for their fellow students as well as motivating them to participate in themed days and fundraising drives for non-profit groups, such as Wheelchairs for Kids and Caritas.

While very rewarding, being a leader of the student body is not always easy. Made up of an executive of Year 12 students, plus representatives from Years 9 to 11, being a part of the group means students need the courage to make difficult decisions. For this reason, St Luke’s College fully supports and congratulates its student leaders on the commitment they show each year.

Alinta becomes independent energy supplier Alinta Energy will be able to supply power to mining projects across the Pilbara after the state government earlier this month ended an agreement restricting it to supplying only BHP Billiton operations. Premier Colin Barnett said the local economy will be boosted by the termination of the 1993 agreement. “This allows Alinta Energy to become an independent power provider in the Pilbara by formally separating its business activities from the historical connection to BHP Billiton’s iron ore operations,” Mr Barnett said. “This will allow Alinta Energy to supply power to other projects in the Pilbara, including the Roy Hill iron ore project.” The original agreement was signed to supply power to BHP Billiton’s iron ore mining and port operations by developing gas-fired power station and pipeline facilities in Newman and Port Hedland. “Until now, the growth of Alinta Energy’s business in the Pilbara has been restricted by this agreement, which had limited further development for purposes not associated with BHP Billiton’s iron ore operations,” the premier said. “The original state agreement has achieved its purpose of enabling the development of the power infrastructure in the Pilbara, and both the government and Alinta Energy agree that it is now in the best interest of its business and the state that it be terminated.”

Who is your finance team? By Justin McMillan

Most of us have a favourite football team, but do you have a finance team in place? Your finance team should include an accountant, a finance broker and a solicitor, with a financial adviser acting as the on-field captain. Like any premiership side, your team should trust each other and have an understanding built up by working together for years. So what is the role of each player? n Financial adviser Acting as the captain, the financial adviser works with you to discuss what you want to achieve and what is important to you when it comes to money. The adviser then formulates the game plan with you and co-ordinates the plan with the other players to ensure it is implemented in a way that will provide the maximum value to you. n accountant The adviser works with the accountant to ensure your affairs are set up in the most tax-efficient way possible. You will meet with the accountant on annual basis to ensure you are continuing to minimise your tax.

n Finance Broker The adviser works with the finance broker to ensure any debt you take on is done in the most cost-effective way in terms of fees and interest rates, while providing maximum flexibility to accommodate any potential changes to your circumstances in the future. The broker also works with you to ensure you continue to have the most competitive loan possible. n solicitor The adviser works with the solicitor to ensure your affairs are fully protected should you endure a marriage split, a business collapse or if you pass away.

The solicitor can also help you with property transactions and other legal issues. A star team will always provide a better solution than star players working in isolation. Contact us at 1300 88 99 61 or at justin@smartwealth.com.au about how we can build a team to help you. The Leisureplex sports centre felt like a mini Madison Square Garden last weekend as it swelled with more than 700 fans for the Fight Night III boxing tournament. With former World Champion Danny Green as guest of honour and boxers competing from across the state, the event organised by the Karratha Raiders Boxing Club featured highquality boxing. But equally impressive was the size of the spectacle. The Leisureplex had areas cordoned off for VIP dining and grandstand seating, a professional MC kept events moving and between rounds flames shot into the air as tunes such as AC/DC’s Thunderstruck blared through the stadium. Raiders president Shane McDonald said that while the club had also sold out its first Fight Night, this year’s event was bigger. “With the lights and fireworks, it was a lot more professionally run than we’ve ever done before,” Mr McDonald said.

“We could have not even put any fights on and the night still would have gone well – there was more show and glamour than fights and that was good.” But when the focus did turn to boxing, Mr McDonald said the standard was very high with boxers coming from Newman, Wickham, Broome, Perth and Karratha. “The Pilbara boxers are always good in that they travel to the tournaments, and it is good to also get the quality of the Perth boys, because they get a lot more sparring than the clubs up here,” he said.

Karratha residents struck a harmonious note as they sang and swayed to Maori music, Brazilian samba and many more cultural dances at last weekend’s Harmony Day celebrations at St Luke’s College. More than 200 people turned out to enjoy the Pilbara Multicultural Association night, which quickly turned into a feast of eating, singing and dancing. As well as tasty food from around the globe, the night featured traditional songs and dances performed by locals born in countries including Thailand, Brazil, Columbia, Poland, Japan, New Zealand, Vietnam and Australia. Apple Coombe choreographed a traditional Thai dance about silk weaving, which her daughter performed on stage along with three other women from Thai backgrounds. “The night was really well organised and everyone had a

smile on their faces while they were performing,” Mrs Coombe said. Mrs Coombe said she was proud to see the Thai women perform on stage and that it also helped her daughter, as well as Australians, connect with Thai culture. Multicultural Association president Judy Wright said the Thai performance was just one of many wonderful cultural experiences during the event. “By participating in Harmony Day activities, we learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it,” she said. Ms Wright also thanked the association’s main sponsor, the Shire of Roebourne, along with the Echo, Snap Pilbara, McDonald’s, Jazz Noodle Bar and St Luke’s College. The event followed on from the success of the association’s International Women’s Day dinner earlier this month and Chinese New Year celebration in February where 400 locals watched Chinese dancers and martial artists perform.

Easter service brings faiths together The dead coming back to life, good triumphing over evil, a saviour rescuing a world in danger – it sounds like the plot of a Hollywood blockbuster. But rather than a silver-screen action hero, we are, of course, talking about Jesus Christ and the story of Easter. Easter is the time of year when Christians remember how Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead. Christians see his death as a sacrifice whereby Jesus offered his life in the place of the people who have offended God. His subsequent resurrection is then seen as a victory over death and sin. And while Easter is consequently a time of reflection, it is also a time to gather with family and friends.

That is why this Easter Sunday, on April 21, the West Pilbara Ministers Association will hold a special service at Hearson’s Cove that is open to community members of all faiths and backgrounds. Ministers from the different churches and Christian communities in town will perform the service together. And by holding it at Hearson’s Cove at sunrise, event coordinator the Rev David Mitchell from the Anglican Church said the sunrise setting at Hearson’s Cove will provide a stunning visual reminder of how Jesus rose from the dead on the morning of the resurrection. “For all Christians, Easter Sunday is Resurrection Sunday,” Mr Mitchell said. “Jesus’s resurrection is the story of God

coming to Earth as a man to defeat death. “It doesn’t get any bigger than that. “This is an event Christians can’t help but celebrate and we want to get all our family together to enjoy the start of that day.” Mr Mitchell also reminded community members that the service is not only for Christians. “People from all backgrounds are invited to attend and see why Easter has been so important to Christians for almost 2000 years,” he said. The WPMA also organises the annual community Christmas carols in conjunction with most local schools. And with last year’s carols attracting more than 1000

people, Mr Mitchell is hoping that there is also big turnout for the combined Easter service, which is being held for the first time this year. The Easter service will be followed by a sausage-sizzle breakfast where the only cost is a gold-coin donation. There will also be plenty of Easter celebrations and services held in individual churches throughout the Pilbara in the coming weeks. “There are lots of services through the whole of the Easter weekend in a variety of styles,” Mr Mitchell said. “Whether you live in Roebourne, Wickham, Karratha or Dampier, I’d encourage everyone to find a service close to them and get to the heart of what Easter is about.”

Liam Ferrari to bring APRIL 2014 the X Factor to Wickham H O L I D AY A C T I V I T I EES REPL X t K A R R AT H A L E IS U 1 -5 p m a

By Ben Leahy Former contestant on The X Factor and pop idol in-training Liam Ferrari will be in the Pilbara next Saturday to perform for local teens at the Wickham dance party.

The free under-age event will kick off at the Wickham Picture Gardens with a Sesame Street Show for under-10s from 3pm before an under-18s dance party starts up at 6.30pm. Liam will be performing choreographed dance moves to the DJ’s beats and will be sure to set young hearts racing due to his striking resemblance to Justin Bieber. And like Bieber, he also hopes to become a global star. “I want to (make a career in) everything – from acting and singing to fashion,” he said. It’s not such a far-fetched dream either. While he might still live at home with his mum, Liam is a self-made internet hit with 460,000 followers on Facebook at just 19. “When my mum and I moved to Melbourne by ourselves two years ago, we didn’t have much, so I turned dancing into entertainment for myself,” Liam said. “Then I got in the garage and filmed my first dance video, uploaded it overnight and it just exploded and got 50,000 likes and I was like ‘holy crap’. “It turned into my job within a week.”

“I had no idea that it would happen that quick – I didn’t even think it would happen.” With his internet success Liam then made it on to Channel 7’s X Factor talent show last year, performing as part of pop group Straight Up. “Moving on to X Factor gave me a more professional platform and acted as a gateway to more gigs and travel,” he said. “It’s been great fun.” The Wickham under-10s party runs from 3-5pm on April 5 with the under-18s dance party from 6.30-10.30pm. Bus services are available, call David Yakas on 0403 308 927 for more information.

Notice of an application to register an area agreement on the Register of Indigenous Land Use Agreements State of Western Australia Notification day: 2 April 2014 WI2014/001 Kuruma Marthudunera and Yaburara and Coastal Mardudhunera Indigenous Land Use Agreement Description of the agreement area: The agreement covers the whole of the land and waters within the external boundaries of the Kuruma Marthudunera (WAD6090/98) and the Yaburara and Coastal Mardudhunera (WAD127/97) native title determination applications as at the Execution Date, an area of about 21,480 sq km and is located west of Karratha. “Execution Date” means the first date on which this deed is executed by both Parties. Relevant LGA: Shire of Ashburton, Shire of Roebourne. Agreement area boundary compiled using data sources from, and with permission of Landgate (WA). Parties to the agreement and their contact addresses: Jack Alexander, Mark Lockyer, Neil Finlay and Gloria Lockyer for the KM People [“KM People” means, collectively, the members of the native title claim group in respect of the KM Claim (WAD6090/98) from time to time, or if there is no KM Claim then the Robe River Kuruma People from time to time] c/o Principal Legal Officer Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation PO Box 3072, 249 Hay Street East Perth WA 6892 Kevin Cosmos, Robert Boona and Valerie Holborow for the YM People [“YM People” means, collectively, the members of the native title claim group in respect of the YM Claim (WAD127/97) from time to time, or if there is no YM Claim then the Mardudhunera People from time to time] c/o Ms Chau Huynh Corser and Corser Lawyers Level 4, Irwin Chambers 16 Irwin Street Perth WA 6000 Statements included in the agreement: [Explanatory notes in brackets inserted by the National Native Title Tribunal] [The agreement does not contain any statements of a kind mentioned in either s 24EB(1)(b)(c) or (d) or s 24EBA(1)(a). The stated purpose of the agreement is to (a) formalise the resolution of the overlap between the KM Claim (WAD6090/98) and YM Claim (WAD127/97) native title determination applications, as set out in an intra-indigenous agreement dated 1 May 2013; (b) support the Robe River Kuruma People and the Mardudhunera People holding native title rights and interests in their respective claim areas; and (c) formalise arrangements and deeds in relation to future acts in both claim areas.] Objections to the registration of an ILUA where the application for registration has been certified: This application for registration of an indigenous land use agreement (ILUA) has been certified by the Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation, the representative body for the area. Any person claiming to hold native title in relation to any of the land or waters in the area covered by the agreement may object in writing within the notice period to the registration of this agreement if they think that the application to register the ILUA has not been properly certified. If you wish to object to the registration of this agreement (and you hold or claim to hold native title in any part of the area covered by the agreement) you may only object for one reason: in your view, the application to register the ILUA has not been properly certified, as stated in section 203BE(5)(a) and (b) of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cwlth). You must make this objection in writing and send it to the Native Title Registrar, National Native Title Tribunal, GPO Box 9973, Perth, WA, 6848 by 2 July 2014. Generally, procedural fairness will require that the material you provide is given to certain other persons or organisations for comment. It may also be taken into account in the registration of other ILUAs and claimant applications and thus be provided to relevant persons or organisations for comment. Details of the terms of the agreement are not available from the National Native Title Tribunal. For assistance and further information about this application, call Claire Smith on freecall 1800 640 501 or visit www.nntt.gov.au.

Trying out new sports By Ben Leahy Karratha kids bounced, hit and dribbled their way through eight different sports at a come-andtry night at Bulgarra Oval on March 21. The three-hour Karratha Sports Expo run by the Shire of Roebourne included 15-minute drills and games in each of Aussie Rules footy, basketball, golf, tee ball, hockey, netball, rugby league and soccer. With 72 primary school-aged children taking part, the night was designed to be fun and connect kids to local sports clubs so they can play their favourite game on a more regular basis. NRL development officer Chris Newman was one of many local sports representatives running clinics at the expo. “It is a great chance for the local sports clubs to put themselves on display so the community knows what is out there,” Mr Newman said.

“There is a lot of choice and we want to get (the kids) active and taking part rather than sitting at home playing PlayStation. “And our three junior clubs (the Karratha Broncos, Karratha Storm and Wickham Wasps) picked up quite a few new players on the day.” Chris was also able to use the expo night to help the development of existing rugby league players. Many of his elite junior players who represent the Pilbara at tournaments and travel to Perth for trials for the state team are also completing coaching courses so they can help grow the game. As part of their coaching course assessments, the young players ran the clinics for the primary school kids at the expo. “They did a great job, and it was a good experience for them to run the clinics,” Mr Newman said. For more information about local sports, contact Shire of Roebourne club development officer Sam King on 9186 8657.

Karratha’s racing drivers are getting ready to rev their engines for the start of Nickol Bay Speedway Club’s season, which kicks off with a practice session on May 11. And to make sure everything is ready to go, the club is holding a busy bee at the track this Sunday from 2pm.

They are asking members and volunteers to bring along mowers, whipper snippers, generators, angle grinders, welders and trailers to help prepare the track. The club will also hold its annual general meeting on Monday a 7pm. Call 0457 788 944 or visit the Nickol Bay Speedway Club Facebook page for more details.

Triathletes go

off-road

By Ben Leahy Karratha triathletes put aside their road bikes last Sunday and pulled out their mountain bikes for the first off-road triathlon of the season. Starting with a swim leg in the Karratha Leisureplex pool, the 21 triathletes then took to the dirt tracks in the hills behind the sports centre to complete their race six ride and run legs. Tania Neeson set the early pace as the first person out of the water and went on to be the first woman and third overall home in the elite long-course division. Her terrific performance was underscored by her ability to very closely match the leading men in the swim and run legs, only to lose most of her time in the bike leg to

talented mountain bikers Richie Chipman and Mark Smith. As two of the best cross-country mountain bikers in Karratha, Chipman and Smith were right at home as they finished first and second respectively event. Nick Muller continued his great form to win the short-course triathlon by 40 seconds from Mark Young in second. Sharee Stedman was the first woman home in the short-course event, with Heather Smith picking up second place. Blair Stedman was king of the kids, crossing the line first in the junior division, ahead of Jordan Bushby and Liam Whiting. Race seven is up next, on April 6, and it will be another off-road event.
