FOR TODAY’S FRATERNITY, SUMMER IS MORE THAN A VACATION Summer is nearly upon us. In the past it has been a time for our students, alumni, family and friends to rest and recharge. Summer vacation ran from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Chapter houses were closed. Summer enrollment was small, and classes were limited. “Rush” was a few cook-outs at alumni homes at best. Summer jobs were the norm. Even your national headquarters took a break from the traditional school year except for the alternating Pi Kapp College or Supreme Chapter national convention. Today is a different time for your fraternity, as your students, national staff and volunteers stay busy throughout the entire year. For our students they are required to take classes during the summer session. Chapter houses are open to provide a summer residence. Recruitment is 365 days a year. Chapter advisors and housing corporation officers support them during this time. At the national level, your fraternity continues to create, provide and promote year-round leadership, scholarship and service opportunities to support Pi Kappa Phi’s vision to “redefine fraternity as a lifelong brotherhood of leaders.” For Push America some may argue the summer is the busiest time with Gear Up Florida, Journey of Hope and Build America. Through Push America, Pi Kappa Phi continues to be a leader in service learning in the fraternity world as we strive to achieve Push America’s mission: “to change the way society views both people with disabilities and fraternities.” This issue of theStar & Lamp focuses on the investment our members and friends make to the fraternity through gifts to the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation. We are most thankful for their support. You can learn more about the Foundation in its Annual Report starting on page 6. While critical to our success, the Foundation does so much more through scholarship opportunities offered to our students, educational grants to support the year-round leadership and education programs of the fraternity, and its off-year alumni summer reunion, which was held in New Orleans, La., in early June. And for Pi Kappa Phi, summer begins with welcoming and training a new class of leadership consultants who will work with our students chapters in the upcoming school year. We assist with summer recruitment. We outreach to our critical university partners by hosting fraternity/sorority life professionals at a Carolina’s Drive-In Conference with the Association of Fraternity Advisors (AFA) at the Kelley A. Bergstrom Leadership Center of Pi Kappa Phi. There are two sessions of our Pi Kapp College, which provides cutting-edge leadership training to our up-and-coming student leaders. Today, summer is more than a vacation, and fraternity is a year-round experience. As always enjoy this issue of the Star & Lamp! Mark E. Timmes Chief Executive Officer mtimmes@pikapp.org

Gamma Epsilon Chapter has returned to Western Carolina University. National President Dudley Woody, Xi (Roanoke), presided over the chartering as installation officer, and was assisted by Dick Baker, Delta Beta (North Georgia). Teams from Delta (Furman) and Epsilon Eta (Winthrop) were on hand to initiate 35 new Gamma Epsilon brothers. Gamma Epsilon was re-colonized in the fall of 2011 by staff members Adam Roose, Theta Upsilon (Northern Arizona), and Brad Anders, Theta Phi (Louisiana Tech). Since returning to campus, the chapter has quickly bonded and strived to exemplify the values of Pi Kappa Phi. With an overall GPA of 3.08, the chapter ranked first among the 10 NIC fraternities on campus. The chapter raised more than $2,000 for Push America and still maintains a weekly volunteer relationship through the University Participant Program, a program designed to enable people with mental and physical disabilities to observe and participate in collegiate classes.

Pi Kappa Phi has welcomed the return of Beta Xi Chapter at Central Michigan University. Past National President Dr. Phillip Summers, Alpha Psi (Indiana), presided over the chartering as installation officer, and past staff member Kevin Kelly, Beta Xi (Central Michigan) assisted. Teams from Alpha Theta (Michigan State) and Theta Rho (Western Michigan) were on hand to initiate 42 new Beta Xi brothers. Beta Xi was re-colonized in the spring of 2011 and became one of four active chapters in the state of Michigan. Since returning to campus, the chapter has quickly bonded and modeled the values of Pi Kappa Phi. The chapter has raised more than $1,000 for Push America. They have also earned a 3.0 chapter G.P.A. ranking second among the 10 fraternities at CMU. During Beta Xi’s chartering banquet, Dr. Summers led the newly initiated men in the singing of “The Rose” to the women in attendance. Written in 1923, “The Rose” is one of Pi Kappa Phi’s oldest traditions. P?/*:%):-$0+&."$%-$#)4&"$&C*0)&=QR

%#-%'#.6#+&(#'.,(, +&(+%#/(3+%#'%",(,#<98=888#6.'#!>,&#%0('"*% In only seven days, the Theta Delta Chapter at Florida International University raised more than $10,000 for Push America in its inaugural “War of the Roses” competition. The chapter organized a variety of events throughout the week of February 4th that educated FIU’s student body on Push America, while raising funds to assist individuals with disabilities. “War of the Roses” was a competition between campus sororities that used an integrated point system for each of the week’s events. By week’s end, a grand total of $10,788.42 was raised. “At first I thought setting a goal of $5,000 was pretty high, considering that this was the first year Theta Delta hosted War of the Roses,” said Mely Rodriguez, the chapter’s 2012 Miss Push America representative. “They kept increasing our goal throughout the week as more money poured in and finally reached $10,000 on the last night.”

STAR & LAMP / SPRING 2013

Gabriel Villanueva, a Theta Delta alumnus, brought the “War of the Roses” concept to the chapter in October 2012. As a leadership consultant for Pi Kappa Phi National Headquarters, Villanueva learned how other Pi Kappa Phi chapters hosted their versions of War of the Roses, and decided to give it a twist. After discussing the idea with Rodriguez, Christian Gutierrez, Theta Delta’s director of service, and Xochilth Jiron, Theta Delta’s 2012 rose queen, the group began to plan every detail of their vision over the course of four months. On day one of “War of the Roses,” an eight-foot plank of wood, graffitied with slurs like “retard,” was set up on the campus lawn awaiting its ambush. With a dollar donation, students were able to throw eggs at the board to to show their support for the ending use of hurtful language.

All of the fundraising throughout War of the Roses meant so much more than just a competition,” explained Gutierrez. Day four relied heavily on the participation of the six Miss Push America 2013 contestants. With the Miss Push America pageant being only a few days away, each contestant was in charge of executing her own Push America fundraising event in front of the university’s student union center. From photo-booths to circus-themed tents, each contestant made Push America come to life. “I was so impressed with the amount of support we received from FIU’s Greek community as well as the overall student body,” said Dylan Matthews, Theta Delta’s archon. “It was great to see everyone coming out to help such an awesome cause.” The most impactful event was held on day five and consisted of a Friendship Visit with members of South Florida’s Best Buddies program. More than 200 FIU students gathered to mingle and interact with individuals who are

directly affected by Push America. “I had a blast playing ice-breakers and learning how to line-dance with everyone,” said Jiron. “It is an experience that left each and every one of us in attendance with Push America’s greatest lesson — to always focus on people’s abilities rather than their disabilities.” The week of War of the Roses concluded with the Miss Push America pageant where Juliana Vanegas from Phi Sigma Sigma was crowned. After tough competition throughout the week, the Theta Xi Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta earned the three-foot trophy and was declared ‘War of the Roses’ champion.” As part of the grand prize, 10 percent of the event’s total fundraising will be donated to Alpha Xi Delta’s philanthropy, Autism Speaks. “In all my years as a brother, I have never seen the FIU Greek community get together and show such support for a great cause like Push America,” said Villanueva. “I am very proud of our brothers and everyone who made this possible.” Theta Delta will soon begin planning War of the Roses 2014 and expects to take the event to an even higher level. However, the chapter will not lose sight of the true focus behind the competition, and that is the mission and vision of Push America.

$$!&3 Since 1973, Dennis Cakebread’s family has been producing wine in California’s Napa Valley. Forty years ago, Cakebread Cellars produced its first vintage — 150 cases of Chardonnay — after his father, Jack Cakebread, purchased a 22-acres vineyard in 1970. Today, after 40 harvests under their belt and with the second generation of Cakebreads making wine, Cakebread Cellars has become one of the most successful and respected American wineries, producing 175,000 cases of wine each year. Dennis, Gamma (Cal - Berkeley), now serves as vice chairman of the board and senior vice president of sales and marketing. He remembers the early years when he would bring chapter brothers and friends up to Napa Valley on weekends to help with harvest. But it wasn’t long before Cakebread Cellars became a full-time operation. In 1986, after earning a master’s degree and obtaining a C.P.A. license, Dennis would officially join the family business. The Cakebread philosophy is to make elegant and balanced wines. The approach to winemaking starts with the grapes. “We grow the very best fruit possible, so that every grape cluster and berry we harvest from a particular vineyard is the finest expression of that site,” says Bruce Cakebread, Dennis’ brother and president of Cakebread Cellars. “Because our goal is improve quality year to year, our wines undergo a slow evolution in style that ensures our longtime customers find them perennially delicious and intriguing.” Dennis partially attributes the quality of Cakebread Cellars wine to Napa Valley. California is the largest wine-producing state in the U.S., yet less than 4 percent come from Napa Valley. Its climate and soil make it like the Garden of Eden for growing grapes.” After 40 years, Cakebread Cellars remains a family-owned business, and according to

Dennis that is one of the biggest assets. “The wine industry is made for family business because it is long term,” says Dennis. “No one appreciates how long it can take from the time you purchase land and plant vines to the time you have a product. We plant and grow grapes for five years before we use them commercially. It takes so long that we only make wines that we are passionate about.” “ W h a t impresses me is the degree to which Cakebread Cellars wines have become a part of people’s lives, often in special ways,” says Dennis. “Ours may be the wine a couple had on their first date or the one they order at their favorite restaurant. It’s if our family has become part of theirs.” 7'""03%.!C'9&'!7 Of course, the winery has evolved .!C'9&'!7%.'$$!&3;%"!(!%2!$$'4 over the years. We give them words to describe their palate. We don’t do pairing of fois gras and paté. We pair with mac and cheese or apple pie. And you can relate that wine back to that tasting experience.” Naked Mountain is also focusing on the local food movement. “People are becoming localvores,” says Randy. “People really enjoy being able to share the ‘flavor

of Virginia’ with their friends. It’s not mass produced, homogenized wine that you can get anywhere.” According to Randy, the wine industry is growing all over the U.S. and especially in Virginia. “With small pockets of wonderful, grape-growing land, Virginia is making some high quality wines. The different climates within the state create a variety of product. And because there are so many smaller wineries, you’ll most likely be able to meet the owner or winemaker, which can be a special experience.” While the Morgans are passionate about what they do, they like to remind people that winemaking is work. “We love the fact that winemaking is so romanticized — you take a product from a field, and it becomes the romantic experience in a bottle,” says Randy. “But winemaking can be dirty work, and has long hours. We don’t spend all day tasting wine. We are glorified farmers. We are very dependent on mother nature.” With five full-time and six part-time employees, Naked Mountain produces 85 tons of grapes each year. And while they are working to expand on their 14 acres of vineyards, it can be a lengthy process. “Once we plant vines, they usually take three to four years to come into production,” says Randy. “After the vines come into production, our white wines are generally released within a year of harvest. Once our red wines are bottled, we usually age them for a year or two before they are released.” Randy says his experience as a winemaker can be compared to his experience as a fraternity man. “You spend a lot of time with your fraternity brothers. You grow with and rely on people. During harvest, we are here 16-18 hours a day, and you have to rely on people. And the winemaking business is somewhat fraternal. The connection you have with your coworkers and within the industry can be profound. You want to help each other out and see each other succeed, which is unusual for an industry.”

LIFELONG Beta Phi celebrates a golden anniversary GREENVILLE, N.C. — The

weekend of February 15th marked the 50th anniversary of the chartering of Beta Phi Chapter at East Carolina University. Exactly 50 years from the day that the charter was presented by then-National President John Deimler, Alpha Upsilon (Drexel), and Executive Director Durward Owen, Xi (Roanoke), Beta Phi hosted a banquet and program attended by more than 200 brothers and special guests. The celebration began at the Greenville Hilton on Friday, February 15 with a welcoming party for all attendees. Handshakes, hugs and backslapping were the order of the evening as folks reconnected with old brothers and met new ones. On Saturday morning a gathering was held to bring the brotherhood up-to-date on Beta Phi and to chart our course for alumni involvement in the future. A new slate of officers for the housing corporation was installed and immediately began its task of learning about housing and property management issues. After a short break, the East Carolina Alumni Association provided ambassadors and transportation for a tour of campus, the Brody Medical School and the new School of Dental Medicine. A highlight of the tour was a visit to the original chapter house, which served Beta Phi between 1963 and 1970. We walked through the house, bringing a flood of happy memories for those brothers who lived there. Saturday afternoon brought a rare snowfall to eastern North Carolina, along with the arrival of our special guests representing Pi Kappa Phi National Headquarters: Executive Director Emeritus Durward Owen; CEO Mark Timmes, Alpha Epsilon (Florida); and Past National President Ted Scharfenstein, Beta Beta (Florida Southern). Durward, Mark and Ted were good sports about the weather, managing to avoid the snowballs. The Saturday evening anniversary banquet started with a performance by The Magnolia Belles, a student choral group, who welcomed the attendees with a selection of school songs. After a short welcome from emcee Ralph Finch (#22),

dinner was served. Opening remarks by brother Finch included stories involving some of the most senior brothers. It was remarkable to have 13 of the original 14 founding fathers in attendance, as well as Wayne Scott, Kappa (UNC - Chapel Hill), who helped start our original colony in 1961. The program continued !"#$%&'()*%+,*#%(-(#($#"%.$-%/$0% with a rememberance of those (center) greets Durward Owen (left) brothers who have passed on to and Ted Scharfenstein (right) the Chapter Eternal, as well as those who have served our country in the military. Cam Frazier (#64) presented a compilation of the early history of the chapter. Our speakers provided us with glimpses of the past, reminders of the present and expectations for the future. Ted Scharfenstein was a field secretary and friend of Beta Phi in the earliest days. Ted shared some of his memories and spoke of the greater fraternity experience. Mark Timmes spoke about Pi Kappa Phi today and its future. Dr. Bobby Woodard, East Carolina’s vice chancellor for student involvement and leadership, gave a view of Greek life as it is today at ECU. We took brother Durward Owen by surprise, as he was not warned that he would be speaking at the banquet, but he did not fail to inspire — and amuse — in his inimitable style. The program finished on a great final note, as the founding brothers were gathered together and serenaded by the Magnolia Belles with “Pi Kappa Phi Girl.” Soon, everyone joined in. To surprise the founders even further, brother Timmes presented each founder with a Golden Legion to commemorate 50 years in Pi Kappa Phi. The presentation capped the program perfectly. The program was followed by dancing, hugs, stories and fellowship, but the evening was over much too soon. Durward Owen, in a follow-up letter, noted, “Having attended many of these, I am qualified to let you know that the committee did a wonderful job in every way.” The event’s success was evident through the smiles on the faces of all who attended. Everyone realized that they had certainly experienced a very special occasion in the history of Beta Phi Chapter. WWW.PIKAPP.ORG

6LWK1D,&6ISI&—&Construction is underway at NJIT

after the university’s Board of Trustees gave the green light in February 2012 for the Warren Street Village project, a three-acre mixed-use student housing complex that will be the new home for Beta Alpha. The impetus for Beta Alpha’s involvement in this project rose from a long-standing need for upgraded housing for the chapter. All the major systems needed to be replaced, and many different options including purchasing a better facility in the area, finding another property to build on, renovating the existing house, and building a new house at our current location were explored. Over the past several years, the Beta Alpha Housing Corporation Board of Trustees had been reluctant to make improvements to the house, unless they were for safety, in order to preserve capital given the uncertainty of Greek community housing at NJIT. NJIT’s “Greek Village” is part of a larger project called Warren Street Village. It includes five duplexstyle Greek facilities —10 houses total, a 360-bed honors residence hall, retail, gym and dining facilities. Once completed in the fall of 2013, Warren Street Village will be a hub for activity on the campus, and the center of Greek life. The project will add 600 beds to NJIT’s residential housing, now filled to capacity. The new residences and amenities are timely additions as the university’s enrollment is expected to exceed 10,000 students this fall. Purchasing a new house in Warren Street Village ensures that Beta Alpha will have a safe and

competitive facility at an attractive location, which is key for future growth and continued chapter excellence. The distinctive features being incorporated into the new Beta Alpha house versus the nine other houses will give Beta Alpha a prominent place in the new Greek Village and among other NJIT Greek organizations. The Pi Kappa Phi house will contain 10,255 square feet and will occupy half of one of the five duplex Greek buildings. Beta Alpha’s new home will be the only house in the village with a basement, which will include an incredible 2,863 square feet of nine-foot ceiling space, a finished multipurpose chapter/seminar room, and a laundry room and two bathrooms. The first floor will house the kitchen, dining room, study/ conference room, library, reading room and two bathrooms. The second and third floors will include a total of 12 resident study rooms that will provide housing for 24 brothers. The resident study rooms are designed to sleep two brothers and are arranged in a suite style, with one room on either side of the suite bathroom. Both the second and third floors will have three suites totaling 12 brothers per floor. The house will have central air conditioning, state of the art technology wiring, a shared elevator, and complete fire protection and security systems. Groundbreaking for the project began on May 1, 2012, and construction will be complete in the fall of 2013. For more information about the Greek Village, visit www.betaalpha.com.

BVG?K`AAGK,&K(*I&—&In 2009, the alumni of the

Omicron Chapter took a long look at their housing situation. As the chapter neared its 100th anniversary and the chapter house neared its 50th year, they had to make some difficult decisions. Fueled by athletic and academic success and coupled with an aggressive growth plan by then-president and now Chancellor Dr. Robert Witt, the University of Alabama has grown at a tremendous rate. Greek organizations have never been stronger; many have built or completely refurbished their facilities. Fortunately for the brothers of Omicron, under the watchful eye of thenOmicron Club President Harry Caldwell, the chapter was in a strong financial position. The chapter house was mortgage-free, and they had significant savings in the bank. The initial plan was to renovate the house. However, when the alumni leadership began to look at a more ambitious effort, they quickly realized that building a new home would far exceed the savings of a smaller-scale remodel. So they partnered with the University of Alabama, which purchased the existing house for another fraternity, and secured the services of Pennington & Company to assist with a feasibility study and major capital campaign. These resources assisted Omicron in having both a firm support base and a sense of what direction it should head with the new house. After careful study and the completion of a successful bid process with other fraternities for one of two

remaining lots along University Boulevard, Omicron Chapter was awarded the last and best lot. Pi Kappa Phi will be the first house visitors see as they enter campus, with a view overlooking the other Greek houses. At almost 28,000 square feet and a cost of $7.8 million, this house will have no equal. With 40 single-man rooms, dining space for 152 brothers, and a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, the facility will allow Pi Kappa Phi to continue to attract the best and brightest young men at Alabama. The house will feature a separate study hall and meeting room, a spacious living room, a recreation room that doubles as a storm shelter, secure on-site parking and the largest band room on campus. In addition, the house will meet all ADA requirements and will be equipped with updated alarm, fire safety and video monitoring systems. “We wanted to build a facility that will serve as our home for the next 100 years,” said Omicron Club President Warren DeBardelaben III. “This is a home of which we can all be proud and will allow Omicron to continue to grow and provide future brothers to opportunity to experience the brotherhood we all cherish.” The groundbreaking was held on November 10, 2012, and construction is expected to be completed by December 20, 2013. If you would like more information or simply want to drop by and see the progress, contact Brother DeBardelaben at debardw@bellsouth.net.
