NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED ALUMNI LEADERSHIP AND DEDICATION

The Advisor Award of Distinction, awarded for the first time in 2017, recognizes exceptional commitment to advising a fraternity chapter, Interfraternity Council or fraternity/sorority community. Each recipient demonstrates dedication to guiding and mentoring the fraternity members with whom they work and exemplifies the highest standards of character, leadership and interfraternalism, both personally and professionally. For his role in leading our chapter, David Shook was recognized with the Advisor Award of Distinction.

Dave has led the way for the Alpha Psi Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi to be fraternal leaders in their community. Dave sets himself apart through his unwavering dedication to the student experience. He spent countless hours not only working with the leadership of the Alpha Psi Chapter but also with the general membership, the parents and the university. Advising one of Pi Kappa Phi’s largest chapters in the country is no small task, but Dave does so in a way that positively impacts anyone who has had an interaction with Pi Kappa Phi at Indiana University. Additionally, he has volunteered for Pi Kappa Phi, serving on the alumni board, housing board and with the Foundation. Congratulations, David. Thank you, brother!

OLIVER SUTTER STEPS INTO CHAPTER ADVISOR ROLE

Please join Alpha Psi in welcoming chapter alumnus Oliver Sutter into the role of chapter advisor. Sutter was initiated in 2013, and as an undergraduate member, served in the roles of vice archon, archon and standards board chairman. He graduated from Indiana University in 2016.

Sutter joined Alpha Psi’s advisory board last year and is excited to be taking on a larger role with the chapter. Sutter shared, “Leaning on my experience as archon and vice archon, I feel I can make more of an impact working directly with the undergraduates in helping them shape the chapter to be the best it can be. Dave Shook set an unbelievably high bar for several roles with Alpha Psi. I hope to live up to those lofty expectations and cannot wait to start.”

ALPHA PSI CHAPTER INVESTMENT FUND

The Alpha Psi Chapter Investment Fund (CIF) is an endowment-type account held by the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation that allows alumni and friends of the Fraternity the ability to make a tax-deductible gift to Pi Kappa Phi and restrict that gift to a specific chapter.

Our current balance is $27,345.10 (as of December 31, 2022). From this program, grants may be made from that fund to the chapter for qualified educational expenses, including scholarships, conference registration fees and related travel expenses, to name a few.

Each year, the program allows four percent of the CIF (based on the previous year’s December 31 closing balance) to be used in support of educational initiatives at the chapter level.

Current Scholarship Programs

Highest GPA (active member, each semester) $500

Highest GPA (associate member, each class) $500

As we continue to grow this fund, we will explore more opportunities to assist the undergraduates. Please contribute to the Alpha Psi Chapter Investment Fund if you can.

ALPHA PSI TO HOST FIRST WARDEN’S INSTITUTE FOR COMMON LOYALTY

Many of us still remember parts of our associate member education. I still have my White Diamond from 1972. That was the basis for my member education. It has the signatures of Durward Owen, Mark Timmes and now Jake Henderson inscribed on the first page. Back then, it was the primary way you learned the history and the traditions of our national Fraternity. Today is much different.

Today, associate member education is a multi-week program that includes not only our history and culture, but leadership and personal development. As a former chapter advisor, it can be overwhelming to manage the amount of material and requirements needed to conduct a complete member education program. Also, many schools, like Indiana University, are mandating the associate member period between accepting a bid and becoming a full member through initiation last only four to six weeks. So how do wardens in our undergraduate chapters handle this challenge? Pi Kappa Phi, with support from the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation developed a solution.

In January of this year, National Headquarters staff devised a four-day program to be held over two weekends to train every chapter’s warden on the model associate member education program. Alpha Psi was selected to host this inaugural program for the first two weekends in August. We are centrally located and have a facility that can house 80 participants each weekend, thereby allowing every chapter to participate. Our facility will be used for both housing and education sessions. Alpha Psi alumni and undergraduates fully supported this event. Housing everyone will not be easy, given the annual work on our facility needs to be completed a month earlier than in a normal year, but we are working hard to complete the task on time.
