A Touch that Lasts for Decades Beta Eta alums welcome back beloved cook Ceil Matthews

From left to right: Alums Tom Hogle ’57, Frank Kaney ’55, and Paul Nichols ’64 are pictured with the evening’s special guest, Ceil Matthews, and daughter, Cecelia Hawkins.

“[I] just wanted to take a moment to thank you again for the invite to a wonderful alumni gathering. My mom was elated and truly felt the love from all of you. Words cannot express how heart warm it made me feel to know that the Pi Kapps have not forgotten her. She holds dearly undying love for the Fraternity, and her experiences there have been among the many blessings bestowed upon her. May God bless each and every one of you and give you peace. Thanks again, keep in touch, and we will do the same.” —Cecelia Hawkins (Ceil’s daughter) For nearly 15 years, Celia Mae Matthews (“Ceil”), served as the de facto matriarch for the Beta Eta student chapter. Ceil’s maternal touch was honored and applauded by her “boys” at the Alumni Chapter’s Annual Meeting on February 21, 2009. Ceil served as the longtime cook for hundreds of Beta Eta men from approximately 1957 to 1972. Her tenure with Beta Eta ended when the chapter lost its house at the top of West College Avenue, at which point she was hired by Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. During her time with Beta Eta, she guided, nurtured and disciplined the student members and had a lasting impact on many of them. Many alumni consider it no coincidence that Ceil was present for an amazing era of Beta Eta’s history. Jeff Niedenthal ’67 reflects fondly about his time with Ceil, “I learned more from Ceil about the world and how to interact with people from different backgrounds than anyone else. Those lessons helped me throughout my career and to this day still.” Ceil’s appearance at the annual meeting unfortunately arose from difficult circumstances. After leaving Pi Kapp’s employ, she continued

to work as Kappa Alpha Theta’s cook until nearly one year ago. Ceil had to leave her position with Theta due to health issues, including heart surgery. The Thetas continued Ceil’s salary for a year after she left work and continue to hold regular fundraisers to provide her financial assistance. One of the Thetas involved in this effort is the daughter of Beta Eta alumnus Paul Nichols ’64 and sister of Lee Nichols ’87. Paul learned of Ceil’s situation and the Theta efforts and he quickly mobilized a group of BH Tallahassee alumni to raise money for Ceil, including a mass email sent through the national headquarters with the assistance of Tom Atwood ’92. These efforts were communicated to the BHAC and it was quickly decided to invite Ceil and her daughter, Cecelia Hawkins, as special guests to the annual meeting reception and dinner. As of mid-February, Paul reported he had received approximately $1,000 in financial gifts, excluding any money that was sent directly to Ceil. Ceil told Paul that she received a generous gift from one BH alumnus which she used to pay off bills, causing her to cry with joy for several days. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Fox Named to Council of Archons

Eight Beta Etas have been so recognized Chapter Archon Adam Fox was recently named to the fraternity’s Council of Archons. First created in 1969 by then Executive Director Durward Owen, Xi (Roanoke), Pi Kappa Phi’s Council of Archons has historically served two important functions for the greater fraternity. First, it represents a formal method by which the fraternity recognizes several of its best and brightest chapter presidents. According to the Fraternity’s Assistant Executive Director Christian A. Wiggins, Epsilon Alpha (Elon), who serves as the staff liaison for the Council of Archons, the criteria for selection includes extracurricular involvement, proven success in leading their chapter, and outstanding character. Second, and more tangibly for the fraternity, the Council of Archons provides a sounding board of student voices that the National Council considers when formulating future

policy. According to National Historian Tom Sullivan, Delta Omega (Texas A&M), who himself was a member of the Council of Archons, each member of this year’s Council will be deployed to one of the National Fraternity’s twelve standing committees. Fox has been assigned to the Fraternity’s Expansion Committee, charged with evaluating the fraternity’s growth strategy as it pertains to opening (or re-opening) new chapters. The Expansion Committee is led by BHAC President Michael Loy ’91. Over the course of forty years, fewer than three hundred Archons have been selected for this honor, while over four thousand have served as Archon during the same period. Fox was chosen among a field of one hundred forty candidates and joins eleven others on the Council. His term on the Council of Archons will conclude in Spring 2010.

Council of Archons Beta Eta Archon Adam Fox joins the ranks of seven other Beta Eta alums who previously have been named to Pi Kappa Phi’s Council of Archons.

BHAC Wins Two Major Awards For the fourth year in a row, the BHAC was named Pi Kappa Phi’s best alumni chapter. This June, the fraternity presented the BHAC the Alumni Chapter of the Year award at the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation’s Summer Alumni Reunion in Boston, MA. President Michael Loy was on hand to accept the award. National Historian Tom Sullivan presented the award. In his speech, Sullivan recognized the BHAC’s support of the expansion efforts to reopen the student chapter, diversity of alumni events, regular communication with alumni, and strength of its membership. “The BHAC has become the gold standard for Pi Kappa Phi alumni chapters,” Sullivan remarked. “They have continued to excel in all areas of operations for a number of years.” Loy later said, “It is an honor to accept the award on behalf of so many supportive alumni, especially at another national event where Beta Eta is so strongly represented. Here we are in New England and Beta Eta has the second highest number of alumni attending. I cannot wait to show the fraternity how strong we are in August 2010 at the next Supreme Chapter in Orlando, FL.”

From L to R: Chuck MacMillin ’62, Chuck Cutajar ’62, Faith Atwood, Tom Atwood ’92, Mike Dewberry ’91, Mike Loy ’91, Nil Loy, Heather De Young, and Phil De Young ‘93.

On the heels of this award, Pi Kappa Phi named the Beta Eta Data the best alumni newsletter at Pi Kappa College in July. This is the second time in 4 years the Beta Eta Data has been so honored.

Lessons from Mid Year Special Report from Chapter Historian Phillip Kelley Coming back from my first Mid Year Leadership Conference, I could hardly sit still on the plane. All I wanted was to fly back to Tallahassee and apply all that I had learned during that weekend; I wanted to help construct Beta Eta to be one of the best again. But with such a strong presence at the conference, you would have never realized we were ever off campus. From the opening speech by National President Jeff Wahlen, to Tom Atwood representing the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation, to Mike Loy teaching the Historian track, Beta Eta was well represented. I walked away from Mid Year having learned many new things; from ideas about future alumni events to proper ways to record chapter history. But there was one lesson that I

learned that I didn’t expect, that brotherhood is a lifetime experience. Sure I’ve heard this numerous times before, but I was only looking at it from a student perspective. I couldn’t see the forest for the trees. I had every intention to keep up with my brothers after graduation, but what about 10, 15, 20 years from now? Would I still have connections with these men? My question was answered at the conference. Seeing Jeff Wahlen, Tom Atwood, Mike Loy and Jim Scarboro talking in the hotel lobby as if they were undergrads again showed me that brotherhood is for a lifetime. Watching them made me realize that when I chose Pi Kappa Phi, I was making a lifetime commitment. My hope now is that I too will have these experiences years later.

COVER STORY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 News of Ceil’s appearance at the annual meeting quickly spread and a large number of alumni registered so that they might honor Ceil. As Ceil and her daughter arrived at the reception on the rooftop terrace at Doak Campbell Stadium, a respectful but jubilant energy permeated the atmosphere. Ceil held court with her “boys,” many who are now retired or nearing retirement, as she once did in the chapter house. Brothers from the 1950s and 1960s related personal stories about their time in the chapter, Ceil, and her awesome

meals. She was also introduced to the current student members so they could better understand her influence on so many alumni. Later that evening, the alumni switched roles and treated Ceil to a wonderful dinner and a standing ovation. Chuck Cutajar ’62, Dave Michael ’61 and Paul Nichols transported Ceil and her daughter to and from the event. Afterwards, they shared that Ceil was overcome with emotion having just reunited with BH brothers, many of whom she had not seen in over 35 years. It was truly a

great experience for all in attendance. Today, Ceil is still somewhat mobile, but generally leaves her home for only medical appointments and therapy sessions. She would love to hear from any of her “boys” to catch up on old times and asked the BHAC to provide her contact information:

Randolph Passes to Chapter Eternal

BHAC Board Member and long-time volunteer, Roger Randolph ’57, passed suddenly and unexpectedly to the Chapter Eternal on January 19, 2009. He was 75. Randolph joined the BHAC Board of Directors in 2005, filling an unexpired term, and was later re-elected in 2006. Randolph worked to reconnect alumni from the late 1950s back to their chapter and to their fraternity. He also worked diligently, along with fellow alumnus John Garrett ’55, to capture

He loved Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and Florida State University and rarely missed an opportunity, especially during football season, to show his pride in both. Warm, gregarious and soft-spoken, Randolph quickly made friends with fraternity brothers who he would meet for the first time. His approachability made him a favorite among many Beta Etas and his absence will be felt by those who were fortunate enough to call him friend and brother. Annual Report 2008 FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Dear Brothers, The time is now for Beta Eta. Having just completed one of Beta Eta’s most successful years ever, we stand at the threshold of a potentially greater year this coming year. But before we understand the opportunities before us, we should review our most recent accomplishments. The BHAC’s mission is to enhance the lifelong fraternal experience for Beta Eta alumni by maintaining an active alumni group that is dedicated to connecting alumni with each other and to their fraternity by providing timely communication of relevant alumni news and organizing meaningful events. By this measure, the BHAC is surpassing its own expectations. NATIONAL RECOGNITION I am happy to report that the BHAC was recognized for a fourth straight year as Pi Kappa Phi’s best alumni chapter. This recognition is due to the support of our membership and the dedicated work of our volunteers. As you will read below, a lot of work went into the activities considered in granting this award and I thank our volunteers for upholding their oath of brotherhood. In particular, I want to thank former BHAC Vice President Brian Baber ’92 and BHAC Secretary Eric Wahlen ’85 for volunteering to serve on and providing their varied skills to the Housing Corporation board, where they are involved in a tremendous amount of activity preparing the house for our student chapter. Special thanks also to Jim Scarboro ’82, who serves as Chapter Advisor and Chairman of the Board of Alumni Advisors for the student chapter. MEMBERSHIP Few could have foreseen the stock market crash beginning last fall and continuing through the early part of this year. Associations and non-profits understandably experienced a decline in memberships and donations. According to the Giving USA Foundation, two-thirds of public charities receiving donations saw decreases in 2008. This was the first decline in nationwide giving since 1987 and second since 1956. Despite these conditions, I am happy to report the BHAC met its historic high in members this year. While 2007 set a high water mark of 185 members, 184 alumni joined or renewed their memberships this fiscal year. This number represents 16% of all living BH alumni. The BHAC strongly believes this resiliency during a harsh economic climate is proof that our alumni support the mission and activities of the BHAC. EXPANSION As we prepared for the reactivation of the student chapter, the BHAC realized it was involved with an opportunity to participate in a historic expansion effort. Working with the national staff, the BHAC provided and coordinated pivotal support for the expansion effort. This support included raising $2,600 for a successful marketing effort with FSU sorority women, sponsoring a recruitment event at a local restaurant/bar, and providing staff housing near campus. These efforts contributed to possibly the best Pi Kappa Phi expansion ever. Pi Kappa Phi CEO Mark Timmes recognized the expansion’s success: “In terms of quality and number of men recruited, the success of the Beta Eta re-colonization stands out as one of the most successful in Pi Kappa Phi history.” National Historian Tom Sullivan, who serves on the national expansion committee, recognized the BHAC’s contributions

to the expansion effort by saying, “In my opinion, no other Pi Kapp expansion has benefitted more from such a strong alumni presence.” ALUMNI EVENTS The two central pieces for our alumni event programming are the BHAC’s Annual Meeting and FSU’s Homecoming. This year’s Annual Meeting was held in Tallahassee, FL on February 21, 2009 at the University Center Club. With the return of the student chapter, there was a lot to celebrate and the BHAC increased its event programming. The meeting was followed by a cocktail reception on the top of Doak Campbell Stadium and then a group dinner at the club. The 55 dinner guests listened to remarks from National President Jeff Wahlen ’81 and welcomed Celia Matthews, the chapter’s longtime cook (circa 1957 to 1972). We also worked with the student chapter to organize a block of tickets for a FSU baseball game that Sunday. Homecoming 2008 was also a success. Spearheaded by Director Chuck Cutajar ’62, the traditional events were organized and well attended. Thank you, Chuck! In addition to these two annual events, the BHAC organized and sponsored a total of 5 events in Tampa, Orlando, and Atlanta. These events included game watching parties, cocktail receptions, and a family picnic. COMMUNICATION The BHAC met its goal to provide timely communication of relevant alumni news to all Beta Eta alumni. The Summer 2008 and Winter 2009 Beta Eta Data editions included news about the expansion effort, alumni updates, alumni spotlights, and articles highlighting Beta Eta’s participation with the national fraternity. We also continued to use our website (www.BetaEta.com) to supplement our newsletter content and provide event details. 2009-2010 As great as the past year was, the coming year could be more pivotal. In the coming year, the BHAC intends to: (1) coordinate and promote the Beta Eta 60th anniversary in conjunction with the re-chartering of the student chapter; (2) drive attendance to Supreme Chapter in Orlando, FL next August, including organizing a Beta Eta event to recognize National President Jeff Wahlen and Push Chairman John Pierce; (3) host our annual meeting in Tampa next spring; (4) create an outreach program for the seniors in the student chapter; (5) publish three issues of the Beta Eta Data; (6) provide memorabilia for the chapter house recognizing the proud history of Beta Eta; (7) assess the feasibility of a capital campaign; and (8) create a local social committee in Tallahassee. We hope that you will join us by providing what you can financially to support these important endeavors. In closing, the BHAC Board is ready to seize the opportunities before us. We look forward to working for you to enhance the BH alumni experience while working with the student chapter to reestablish Beta Eta as FSU and Pi Kapp’s leading chapter. While it is great to be a Pi Kapp, it is even better to be a Beta Eta! Your brother, Michael S. Loy, Chairman and President
