ORLANDO ‘MAGIC’ Alumni, spouses, and guests join one another as the Beta Eta Alumni Chapter, Inc. (BHAC) holds its Annual Meeting last February in Orlando, Florida.

Chapter alumni from across the state and as far away as Washington, DC convened at the Royal Pacific Resort Hotel at Universal Orlando for the second Annual Meeting of the Beta Eta Alumni Chapter, Inc. Beta Eta’s from across six different decades joined one another to transact the business of the Alumni Chapter and to reconnect with one another. Nearly fifty alumni and guests attended the evening’s activities, which included the meeting, cocktail reception, and private dinner. Alumni members Sandy Zevin ’51 and John Worrell ’04, the oldest and youngest alumni respectively.

During the Annual Meeting, reports were given on various activities of the Alumni Chapter, including the publishing of this newsletter, past and upcoming social events for Beta Eta alumni, and efforts to document the chapter’s fifty-seven year history and preserve its memorabilia. Separate presentations were also made regarding the development of betaeta.com—the BHAC’s official Web site—as well as a presentation on Congressional efforts to amend the Federal Tax Code to allow tax deductable donations for Greek housing.

In addition, elections were held for two Director seats. Incumbent Directors Jeff Niedenthal ’67 and Chuck Cutajar ’62 were reelected to a new three-year term in office.

Following officer reports and elections, the remaining time was devoted to the presentation of a new strategic needs assessment for the “Greater Beta Eta Chapter” (including the

Alumni Chapter, Housing Corp., and Board of Alumni Advisors). BHAC President Michael Loy ’91, Director Jeff Niedenthal and Tom Atwood ’92 presented the assessment to those members present, solicited feedback, took comments regarding the assessment’s scope and timeline, and asked for volunteers. (See Page 5 for details and photos).

At the close of official business, several alumni were recognized for their material support and encouragement of the BHAC’s efforts. Specifically, Tom Atwood for his work in publishing the Beta Eta Data and Hugo deBeaubien ’68 for his assistance in facilitating different aspects of the Annual Meeting weekend.

Once the meeting was adjourned, alumni joined their spouses and guests for a cocktail reception at the hotel. This afforded all in attendance the opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones before the evening concluded with a private dinner at the Palm Restaurant.

Recruiting a New Chapter In the second installment of our series discussing how Pi Kappa Phi will reactivate the Beta Eta Chapter, we describe how new members will be recruited.

The success of a new Pi Kappa Phi chapter depends upon its membership. Beta Eta began its storied history with a strong class of founders, and that quality continued for many generations.

Now that the student chapter has closed its doors, reactivating the chapter will depend on a strong initial push for quality members.

Pi Kappa Phi traditionally begins new chapters using Headquarters staff to recruit.

The process begins years before the staff arrive on campus. They examine the campus culture, develop an advertising strategy, locate alumni to work with the new group, and meet with campus administrators to work out many logistical issues. Pi Kappa Phi also advertises upcoming expansions at its conferences in order to solicit leads from other student members.

Once the staff arrive on campus for their month-long expansion effort, their principal tasks are: (1) recruiting members, (2) creating campus awareness for the new group, (3) developing relationships with other campus organizations, and (4) teaching the new chapter the basic fundamentals of how to operate as a chapter. Oftentimes, these tasks overlap.

With regard to recruiting members, the expansion process is vastly different from traditional Greek rush. Expansions employ more personal, one-on-one methods to selectively recruit in contrast to the typical

rush events held at a fraternity house.

The staff make presentations to campus organizations (sororities, ROTC, etc.) to explain what the new chapter will represent, the type of man Pi Kappa Phi is looking for, and how these men will be face a unique opportunity to start something of their own on that campus. The staff solicit the names of candidates who might be qualified for such an opportunity, and then contact these men.

Candidates will attend an information session given by the staff and then are interviewed. This process provides an opportunity for the staff to determine if a candidate possesses the necessary dedication, interpersonal skills, academic ability, and leadership potential to represent Pi Kappa Phi properly. Once a strong initial group of students is formed, the staff teach them how to recruit other quality members and work with them to build sufficient mass for the chapter.

While this new group will participate in rush the following semester, they will continue to rush year round to establish an adequate chapter size.

The opportunity to re-establish Beta Eta will provide unique opportunities for its student members. Recruits will be challenged to chart their own course on campus while representing the principles of our founders. It will take a special type of student to join this group, but, through selective recruiting, each will be the type we can all be proud to call “Brother.”

Florida’s ‘Voice of Reason’

Following twenty-eight years with the Florida Chamber of Commerce, twenty-five of those years as its President, fellow Beta Eta alumnus, Frank Ryll, Jr., will step down in February 2008 as one of Florida’s most convincing ‘voices of reason.’

Consider these statistics… …a recent survey conducted by the Florida Chamber of Commerce revealed that 25% of respondents had been dropped by their insurance carrier in the last year or had their policy renewed with either a significant rise in premium or equally significant reduction in coverage.

…93% of Florida business owners, who responded to a recent survey, experienced a rise in property taxes last year. Moreover, within that same period, thirty-two counties in the state increased their property tax by 20% or more. (continued on page 4)

GAME VIEWING PARTIES

Last October the BHAC hosted gameviewing parties in Atlanta and Tallahassee for the FSU vs. Boston College game.

ALUMNI UPDATES Arden ANDERSON ’59 At 79 years of age, Arden is still searching for oil and gas, plays tennis twice-weekly, and still enjoys flying his plane. Arden currently lives in Lafayette, LA. arden@cajonoil.com

Doug SMITH ’59 After graduation, Doug started his career at WEDU in Tampa and then moved to Boston to attend graduate school at Boston University.

He was hired by WGBH in Boston and worked there for the next 16 years. While at WGBH, Doug worked on several national series including The French Chef, ZOOM, and Nova. His new challenges led him to graduate school at Tufts University and on to working in communication and fundraising. Currently, Doug lives in Boston and does fundraising for Emerson College, a liberal arts college for communication and the arts. …Florida’s growth remains explosive.

Between 1990 and 2000, Florida’s population grew by 23.5%, with over one thousand people on average moving to the Sunshine State each day.

While Florida’s high-octane growth and related issues pose challenges for the state and its business community, they help to frame the agenda for the staff and volunteers who are leaders in one of the nation’s largest and most influential

In reflecting on his time at the Chamber, Ryll is proudest of several accomplishments. Top of the list is Leadership Florida - a leadership development program created to build a sense of statewide community by identifying and training individuals with the passion and commitment to help make great things happen. Created in 1982, Leadership Florida celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

[The Florida Chamber] has emerged as an integral force in convening Florida’s major corporate, educational and community shareholders in collaborative efforts to address critical issues.

Chambers of Commerce, and are often topics of Ryll’s monthly column, Voice of Reason too.

Twenty-eight years ago, Frank Ryll came to the Florida Chamber by way of the Greenville, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and before that, Sarasota.

Under his leadership, the Florida Chamber has grown tremendously in both annual revenue and the scope of service it provides its members and the state. In the last twenty-five years, the Florida Chamber’s annual revenue stream has grown substantially and the organization has emerged as an integral force in convening Florida’s major corporate, educational, and community shareholders in collaborative efforts to address critical issues. Ryll believes, “The Chamber is well positioned to draw these disparate interests and parties together to accomplish things on behalf of all Floridians.”

According to Ryll, growing Florida’s economy while managing its growth and the aforementioned issues remain a top priority and challenge for the state, and by extension of that, the Florida Chamber of Commerce. Establishing economic clusters around the new “innovative economy”, which includes things like biotechnology and emerging nanotechnology, will bring higher paying jobs to the state and help to diversify its economic base.

Other accomplishments under Ryll’s leadership, to which he feels especially connected, are the development of the public policy research program in the Chamber Foundation as well as its political and advocacy programs.

In addition to Ryll’s Chamber credentials, he has served his community in a number of leadership positions, including time on the Tallahassee Community College Foundation Board of Directors, Vice President of the Florida State Alumni Association, and Chairman of the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals.

While Ryll has worked hard to serve others and the state of Florida, he credits much of his success to Pi Kappa Phi. “As a student at Florida State in the early 1960’s, I credit the fraternity for helping me cultivate an interest in service and public affairs. I fondly remember the chapter campaigning for me when I ran for President of the FSU Men’s Senate. My brothers were there for me, helping me along the way.”

Frank Ryll and his wife, Patti, have been married for twenty-three years. They live in Tallahassee with their two children and five grandchildren.

Bill SERA ’88 Currently, Bill is the Manager of Guest Care at Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCC). He is responsible for any guest who is medically disembarked from RCC’s ships or experience unusual medical circumstances which require disembarkation in a foreign port. Bill is also pursuing an advanced degree at Barry University and will graduate this May with a Master’s in Nursing as a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. AREAS OF ACTION FOR BETA ETA At the Annual Meeting this February, a strategic assessment of the greater Beta Eta chapter was shared with those alumni in attendance. The purpose of the presentation was two-fold: to share the scope and scale of work which Beta Eta requires prior to the fraternity’s reconstitution of the student chapter in Fall 2008, and to enlist the help of volunteers who wish to contribute to one or more of the project areas listed below. Moving forward, the plan will be to establish work teams of interested alumni to address these issues and opportunities.

ALUMNI UPDATES Jason KLEIN ’91 Jason’s album Monster Taxi was released worldwide during the winter of 2007. The album is available at Amazon.com, in some select stores around the country, and is available for download on iTunes and others digital music providers. His publishing company is entitled “Beta Eta Music” and the album is released under his own label, but distributed through a major label. The single, “Memory Wack,” has been charting very strong on dance club charts and is playing on several radio and satellite stations. He thanks the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity in the liner notes, along with some individual brothers. Alumni Reunite for Homecoming, Cutajar Honored The weekend of November 17-19, 2006, was a great weekend for all Beta Eta alumni.

As Florida State University celebrated Homecoming 2006 – ‘A University of Champions’ – Beta Eta alumni gathered Friday night for the annual alumni dinner at the Silver Slipper in Tallahassee, FL to honor one of its own ‘champions.’

With alumni, guests, and friends in attendance, Pi Kappa Phi Foundation Executive Director and Beta Eta alumnus, Tom Atwood ’92 presented Chuck Cutajar ’62 with the National Fraternity’s Merit Citation – recognizing Cutajar for his sustained and selfless commitment to keeping Beta Eta alumni connected to one another. ’81, who was unable to attend the event, Atwood read Wahlen’s prepared remarks which illuminated Cutajar’s commitment to brotherhood and compared him to other Pi Kappa Phi ‘greats’ like CT Henderson and Mode Stone – both having left an indelible mark on Beta Eta. (see back page for photo and resolution) Alumni gathered the following day at the ‘Bueller House’ for the Annual Meeting of the Beta Eta Housing Corporation. President Chris Mueller ’92 gave a brief report on the status of the corporation and indicated that additional and significant repairs would be needed in the short term to bring the chapter house into compliance with the lease signed with Alpha Epsilon Pi, the current tenant of the chapter house. Following the business meeting, alumni enjoyed the tailgate atmosphere of the Bueller House as alumni reconnected with each other in advance of the Seminole’s win over the Western Michigan Broncos.

ALUMNI UPDATES Mike ORLANDO ’91 Last summer, Mike and family moved from Atlanta, GA to Nashville, TN where Mike has begun work for Robert Half International as a full-time Financial Consultant. His first and still-current client is Nissan and he enjoys his time in the new BellSouth tower in downtown Nashville. Dan THOMPSON ’91 Last November, Dan was the recipient of the National Bible Association’s Witherspoon Award, which recognizes an Armed Forces Chaplain who encourages the reading of scripture in a special way. The award is rotated each year between the Armed Forces and the last Air Force recipient was in 2003. In January, Dan was deployed to Ali Al Salem, Kuwait and will be on deployment for 4-6 months. In addition, last August, the Thompson family welcomed their third child into the world, Noah Daniel Thompson. Aaron WILHELM ’93 For the last 10 years, Aaron has been living in Los Angeles where he manages music producers. One of his clients, Howard Benson, has been nominated for Producer of the Year for his work on this year’s Grammy Awards.
