BLINDED BY THE LIGHT By Wayne Hรถecherl This shot is an example of how simplicity in lighting can be very affective. For this particular shot, just 2 light sources were used. The main, or Key light was a bare Dynalite head and a layer of diffusion mounted inside the hanging lampshade, lighting the model from above. This light source was purposefully placed slightly in front of the model in order to illuminate her face, form, & the texture in the dress. My second light source was another Dynalite head with a 30-degree grid. Positioned above and behind the model pointing towards the back of her head and shoulders. This created a back-edge light along with the dynamic shadow we can see in the foreground. LESSONS ON LONG EXPOSURE PHOTOGRAPHY

I took my first long exposure photograph in the Fall of 2001, using a Rollei SL 66 medium format film camera. Since that faithful day, photographing in this particular style has defined my photographic life. Today, almost 12 years later, I am still chasing light not at a more typical 1/125th of a second but rather at several minutes at a time. As my photographic style has evolved, I have learned a great deal along the way. What I would like to share with you in this article are 50 lessons. Most are not specific to long exposure photography alone, but apply to all disciplines of photography. From photographic vision, composition, equipment, to technical advice, I hope you find lots of useful information here. For more long exposure photography articles, and to see my portfolio and latest work, please visit my blog at www.bulbexposures.com 1 Less is more - carry only the equipment you need. For me that’s wideangle prime lenses, and two camera bodies. 2 Think before you shoot! Then take a test shot. Repeat. 3 Long exposure is subjective. Depending on the situation, a long exposure can be 1 second, 1 hour, or even 1 day (or even longer). 4 After you accomplished understanding how to photograph, the more challenging question becomes what to photograph.

5 A great long exposure photograph is 60% vision, and 20% camera technique, 20% post-production skills. To get a good photographs you can fail in one or even two of these areas, but to get a great photograph all three have to be excellent! 6 Learn from the Masters, make an effort to really understand their work and be sure to define precisely why you like it. 7 Long exposure photography is not about quantity, It’s about quality. It’s about being deliberate. It’s about slowing down.

8 Prime lenses are key when it comes to quality. In fact, it’s how you improve not just the technical but also artistic qualities of your images. Zooms tend to make you lazy and offer an overwhelming array of choices for many photographers. 9 Take a step back. Now take another! Shoot! 10 Don’t setup the tripod right away when you get to your destination. Explore and take hand-held shots first, then commit. 11 Old wooden piers and docks may move, especially when people walk by. 12 Buy your last tripod first. You’ll be glad you spend the money when your shots are actually sharp and you enjoy using the tripod as well. 13 Variable ND filters are tempting. But don’t buy them! It is much easier and more consistent to work with solid ND filters. Trust me. 14 Long Exposure noise reduction in-camera doubles your waiting time! But, it may be worth it so experiment with your gear. 15 Carry spare ND filters. You will drop a filter (or two). It’s a fact. So don’t stress about it. I’ve dropped a few sets in the ocean or saw them shatter on rocks!

16 Tape the viewfinder with black tape, or use the supplied plastic cover. This will prevent light leaking in during long exposures. 17Tape the focusing window on your lens to prevent light leaks. 18 Tell stories with your images - aim to make a series of photographs rather than single captures. 19 It’s not the fancy camera and/or lens that enables you to take a certain photograph. It is you! 20.To bring out drama in cloudy skies underexpose. 21. Brightening exposure in post production will increase noise significantly. 22. Take a notebook to record ideas when shooting. 23. The more gear you bring the less fun you’ll have shooting. 24. Be critical when selecting only your best work - In fact, be ruthless! 25. Be selective with who you invite to critique your work. 26. Do not over-do post production effects. Too much of anything is never good.

leading lines in your compositions. 28. Shoot square. 29. Shoot double square (panoramic). 30. With exposures of 30 minutes or longer, use film. 31. Film ‘suffers’ from reciprocity failure. Digital suffers from noise. It’s important to point out this is a positive effect for film shooters, but a negative effect for digital shooter. 32 If you can only afford a single ND filter, buy a B+W 10 stop filter. If you
want to be able to shoot in all lighting conditions, and have choice of exposure times up to several minutes, then buy a second 6 stop ND filter. You’ll then have 16 stops total, which is what I use for most photographs. 33 Tiffen and Hitech both make ND filters that help prevent color shifts. They have an infrared cut (IR) filter component. 34 When using ND filters, take off any skylight or UV filters that might be in place to protect your lens.

It’s an opportunity to create unique compositions and perspectives not obtainable with single exposures. 36 Once you have mastered long exposure photography in a single location, you are ready to shoot any- and everywhere. 37 Nik Silver Efex is an amazing plugin to convert your color originals to black and white. 38 Photoshop works great to fine-tune your results from plugins such as Silver Efex, and can also solve more advanced post production tasks (such as replacing skies). 39 Long exposure photography in nature or along the coastline can be incredibly relaxing, enjoyable, even therapeutic.

Bring a big umbrella, large enough to cover you and your camera. 43 Yes it is possible to photograph in the snow - use that same umbrella if you have to. 44 If you can, the only weather condition to avoid for long exposure photography is direct sun and clear blue sky. It’s the hardest to deal with. 45 Using multiple ND filters stacked, especially on wide-angle lenses can cause strong vignetting. Since I like using vignettes, this is generally not a problem
nor concern for me
46 If you do not want vignetting, even when stacking filters on wide-angles lenses, shoot multiple frames and combine as a panorama. This will let you crop out and eliminate the vignette. 47 To create panoramas, you can use Photoshop, but the program I recommend is Autopano Pro 48 When shooting long exposures with film, you’re not limited as to the length of your exposure time. You can go well over an hour, even days or months. This is a huge advantage over digital. 49 When shooting long exposures with digital, use the shortest exposure time that will give you the particular creative effect you’re after. Do not use exposures of 1 hour or longer. 50 Your images do you no good just sitting on your hard drive at home. Get them out and share. Submit to photo contests and participate in portfolio review events such as Photofest in Houston or PhotoLucida in Portland. B E N E AT H C O L D S E A S THE UNDERWATER WILDERNESS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
For over fifteen years David Hall has been traveling to BC to photograph the diverse ecosystem that surrounds our shores. His dedication, patience and determination is clearly displayed in the results a stunning collection of underwater photography unlike any other. In 2011 with the help of the David Suzuki foundation he published a book of his work. It received widespread critical acclaim and was the winner of the 2012 National Outdoor Book Award for 'Best design and artistic merit'. Now for the first time David has an exhibition featuring work exclusively from this series at Vancouver's Photohaus gallery. In between preparation for this show and planning his next diving expedition, David found the time to answer a few of our questions. How many years have you been photographing underwater marine life? I made my earliest underwater images in 1968, and have been publishing and selling underwater work since 1982. What inspired you to create Beneath Cold Seas? The spectacular marine life of British Columbia that was so different from what I had become familiar with in tropical waters, combined with the absence of a book that IMO fully explored the artistic possibilities that seemed to exist here. How long was the book in the making? The photographs for the book were made during a dozen trips between 1995 and 2010. I made

approximately 600 dives during these trips, a total of approximately six months, making several dives a day. It took another six months to put the book together, with the help of an editor and designer assigned by the Canadian publisher, Greystone. What came first; your interest in diving or photography? My fascination with animals came first, followed by a degree in Zoology. I had started to develop an interest in photography only several months before my first diving experience. I carried a simple camera on my very first dive and since then have rarely dived without a camera.

Are you self taught or did you have any training in photography? My only formal training was a oneweek hands-on course in underwater photographic techniques, in 1979 and a 3-day workshop several years later with Ernst Hass. I also learned a great deal by studying the work of photographers such as Eliot Porter, Douglas Faulkner and Chris Newbert. Aside from that, the rest came about through trial and error, always challenging myself to do better. What are some of the greatest challenges/ difficulties you face shooting in cold water. Briefly, the major challenges are staying warm, diving under difficult conditions (e.g. strong tidal currents), and photographing in water with low light and limited visibility. When you set off on a dive are you looking to shoot a particular species Is there much planning you can do with respect to what you hope to encounter or is every dive a case of hoping for the best? Sometimes I am diving with the intention of photographing a particular species, such as when making the sea lion and sockeye photographs for Beneath Cold Seas. However, most of the time I have no idea what I may end up photographing. In fact, one of the challenges of photographing underwater is learning to live with the frustration that can come with being unable to change lenses during a dive!

Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to get into underwater photography? I am often asked this question. First, you must learn to dive and become comfortable underwater. Second, be prepared to spend a lot of time overcoming numerous obstacles that are not faced by above water photographers. And finally, be prepared to spend a lot of money on equipment, diving and traveling expenses. There is much truth in the old joke that the only way to make a small fortune in underwater photography is by beginning with a large one.
