Making sense of next step! Leslie Witt, HR Specialist, «Gallup Media» company

It's a typical morning. As you walk through the office door, a co-worker hops by shrieking, covered in confetti. You get to your desk and every item on it — computer, reference books, phone — has been turned to face the wall. You sit down and a rude sound resonates through the office. “Ah,” you say to yourself, “it's great to be back in the office.”

F

unny but we had to know more! Understanding humor in the workplace is critical because having fun is a big part of doing a good job and loving work. As is our habit at The Well when we want to know something, we designed a questionnaire about humor at the office and administered it to our website and office visitors. Switch on your sense of humor and we'll tell you what wo discovered. Practical jokes in the office Practical jokes—tricking people into believing something that is not true or doing something to shock them—are common in the office. Almost all men and over 80 percent of women we surveyed admitted they had pulled a practical joke at least once in their life, with over half doing it multiple times. And plenty have had jokes played on them, “Once my colleagues offended me a bit so I walked out. declaring. Oh my God, it was cent, love physical comedy. But when it comes to real life funny.” Such practical jokes can slapstick, men and women lighten the office mood. But differ in how they react. If unfriendly practical jokes someone falls down in the street, an almost equally leave victims feeling foolish small number of men and and tricked. and told him he had to work from home.” said a male business development professional. “And can you believe it? He worked from home for three days before he realized we had been joking!” Imagine how this joke damaged the worker's productivity and self-esteem. Fantasizing about mean practical jokes We all fantasize about pulling mean practical jokes, especially when we are angry or frustrated. According to our survey, women daydream about doing mean things far more often than men. Women dream of pulling pranks on co-workers while men dream of targeting their supervisors. The desire to pull a mean practical joke at work is an indication of hostility, which has its roots in insecurity and feeling threatened. This indicates that men harbor more anger toward their superiors, while women struggle more with interpersonal conflict, And what kind of practical jokes would people play in the office if they had the courage? “I would write fake pink slips for people so they would think they were being fired.” said a male credit expert. “I would tell everyone, one by one, under oath to keep it secret, that I was receiving twice my regularly salary on my debit card. And then I would act really happy to be working and see how the gossip goes around,” said a female medical representative, “I would balance a basket full of water on the top of our general director's door.” said a man. “I would hide my boss's key to the office in his own pocket or bag,” said a secretary. How about this one for ingenious and frightening? “I would have someone call the company and say they were from the tax authorities and declare. 'You will soon have the pleasure of getting a visit from the tax inspector.'” said a head bookkeeper. Help, help! I've fallen down and I can't get up! That's rude! Twice as many men than women, proportionally, find rude, sexual comedy funny: 28 percent for men, 14 percent for women. Yet 25 percent of both men and women love it when people are caught doing embarrassing things like picking their noses, farting, or fiddling with their crotches. “When we are all tired, one of my colleagues starts answering the phone, 'This is Anna, good morning, welcome to XXX office.' No matter what the person on the line asks, Anna just repeats this same sentence three times. I don't know why, but it's awfully funny. said a woman executive assistant. Stories to tell: not everyone tells them well Half of our respondents said there is someone in their office who insists on telling long-winded anecdotes and unfunny jokes, even though nobody wants to hear them, and the same percentage believe one person with a lousy sense of humor can ruin the morale of the entire office. Evidently a bad sense of humor is contagious, our respondents believe, so managers, shut down that office bore! Please make work more fun! In our office never ceases. said a female marketing assistant. It is not because we cannot work seriously or because we act like fools all the time. It is just that, we have a sense of humor and it is easier to overcome difficulties that way. Our team is good humored and friendly and nobody ever plays mean jokes on anybody. As for our management, they must remember that positive emotions improve performance. There are plenty of reasonable and affordable things managers can do to raise office morale and make work more fun, without sacrificing office discipline. Our respondents were full of good, practical suggestions. Topping the list were teambuild-ing events, parties, and celebrations colleagues more, having a laugh during the breaks, and laughing more often in complex situations, I would like to get together with my boss in an informal atmosphere more often. and Our office is very quiet and I would like to have some pleasant music. Good marketing must constantly redefine the line between capturing people's attention and driving them away. As long as there are products to sell, companies must come up with increasingly convincing marketing campaigns to break through people's resistance and get them to open their wallets and buy? Russia is not yet a sophisticated advertising environment, but it is rapidly becoming one. Marketing campaigns by foreign companies, launched very clumsily in post-Soviet Russia, are evolving. Some Russian companies are coming into step while others lag behind. The world and Russian consumers are changing together, but how quickly and who leads? Do we understand how advertisers manipulate us? Do we blindly swallow whatever tales they tell us, or have we become sophisticated and desensitized to the lies and truths of marketing? Do we feel like we are under siege? Are Russians sophisticated consumers in general? I do not think so,” said a woman who had just finished her studies. “Each marketing campaign is adopted to the country and target population. If the population is sophisticated, then advertising will be sophisticated too.” Many respondents linked quality of advertising campaigns with the public's sophistication, assuming that as Russians become more cultured and discerning, advertising will improve. To get some sense of the issue, we questioned our candidates about marketing and advertising in Moscow. Over 30 men and almost 40 women responded, more than half answering online through Staffwell.com. Many respondents linked quality of advertising. Russians sophisticated consumers in general?

Half of our respondents said there is someone in their office who insists on telling long-winded anecdotes and unfunny jokes, even though nobody wants to hear them, and the same percentage believe one person with a lousy sense of humor can ruin the morale of the entire office. Evidently a bad sense of humor is contagious, our respondents believe, so managers, shut down that office bore! A group of Italians were coming to our company for a visit, and a colleague and I were told to memorize some phrases about Moscow in Italian to recite to them when they arrived at the airport. Memorizing these sayings reminded me of school when I used to learn things by rote, without real understanding, said a female secretary. When the Italians arrived, we told them

everything . They were very surprised we spoke their language and they started asking us questions in Italian; they thought we spoke Italian as we had learned the phrases so well. So we kept answering back, 'We are happy to see you,' There are plenty of reasonable and affordable things managers can do to raise office morale and make work more fun, without sacrificing office discipline. Our respondents were full of good, practical suggestions. Topping the list were teambuild-ing events, parties, and celebrations. It would be great to organize good corporate events, preferably outside the office.” said a male legal consultant. “These would help colleagues get to know each other better and give us something to talk about besides our personal problems.” I would throw more fun parties and events where people perform for one another,” suggested a secretary. Some other suggestions were, “We must tell jokes and anecdotes more often or have some merry contests,” “Sending jokes by e-mail to my colleagues more, having a laugh during the breaks, and laughing more often in complex situations, I would like to get together with my boss in an informal atmosphere more often. and Our office is very quiet and I would like to have some pleasant music. And the best answer of all? “We should all smile more. said a woman. Laughter is the best medicine In our office laughter never ceases. said a female marketing assistant. It is not because we cannot work seriously or because we act like fools.

Fighting for consumer loyality: marketing, marketing, marketing! Once my colleagues offended me a bit so I walked out. declaring. 'Well, you don't like me so I am going to leave you all.”' said a female senior project manager. “I returned after lunch to discover there was nothing left at my workplace: no computer, no files, not even a tele “During the holiday we removed all of the furniture from a colleague's office and told him he had to work from home.” said a male business development professional. The desire to pull a mean practical joke at work is an indication of hostility, which has its roots in insecurity and feeling threat-

I do not think so,” said a woman who had just finished her studies. “Each marketing campaign is adopted to the country and target population. Good marketing must constantly redefine the line between capturing people's attention and driving them away. As long as there are products to sell, companies must come up with increasingly convincing marketing campaigns to break through people's resistance and get them to open their wallets and buy?

said a male credit e xpert. I would tell everyone, one by one, under oath to keep it secret, that I was receiving twice my regularly salary on my debit card.

Practical jokes—tricking people into believing something that is not true or doing something to shock them—are common in the office. Almost all men and over 80 percent of women we surveyed admitted they had pulled a practical joke at least once in their life, with over half doing it multiple times. And plenty have had jokes played on them, Once my colleagues offended me a bit so I walked out. declaring. work is an indication of hostility, which has its roots in insecurity and feeling threatened. This indicates that men harbor more anger toward their superiors, while women struggle more with interpersonal conflict, And what kind of practical jokes would people play in the office if they had the courage? “I would write fake pink slips for people so they would think they were being fired. said a male credit expert. No more tears! Twice as many men than women, proportionally, find rude, sexual comedy funny: 28 percent for men, 14 percent for women. Yet 25 percent of both men and women love it when people are caught

doing embarrassing things like picking their noses, farting, or fiddling with their crotches. One women noted she only finds “crotch scratching” funny. So much for women being the more cultured sex! How's this for a rude story, and told by a woman, too! “I was out with my old boss on a sales call,” said a female director. “We left the meeting and got into an elevator, which had one person in it. All of a sudden my boss let out a high-pitched fart. The other person in the elevator just clenched her jaw. but I just could not keep from bursting out laughing, mostly because of the strange sound and the fact that it was just such a weird moment. The person then got off at her floor and we got off at the next floor, still snickering .Women dream of pulling pranks on coworkers while men dream of targeting their supervisors. As we exited we both noticed that the smell from his fart had materialized and we quickly exited the elevator while someone else was getting on. We were doubled over laughing imagining the expression on the person's face who just walked into that trapped stench. It was very, very funny!” You must be kidding About an equal percentage of men and women. 40 percent, find clowns funny, with slightly more women than men proportionally. One women said, “sometimes and another said, “it depends on the clown.

Practical jokes—tricking people into believing something that is not true or doing something to shock them—are common in the office. Almost all men and over 80 percent of women we surveyed admitted they had pulled a practical joke at least once in their life, with over half doing it multiple times. And plenty have had jokes played on them, “Once my colleagues offended me a bit so I walked out. declaring. 'Well, you don't like me so I am going to leave you all.”' said a female senior project manager. “I returned after lunch to discover there was nothing left at my workplace: no computer, no files, not even a telephone. All that was there was a pad of paper with. 'For Rent.' written on it. Oh my God, it was funny. Such practical jokes can lighten the office mood. But unfriendly practical jokes leave victims feeling foolish and tricked. Meanness is glossed over by calling the prank a “joke.” This kind of humor is damaging to morale, and must be controlled. “During the holiday we removed all of the furniture from a colleague's office and told him he had to work from home.” said a male business development professional. “And can you believe it? He worked from home for three days before he realized we had been joking!” Imagine how this joke damaged the worker's productivity and self-esteem. Fantasizing about mean practical jokes The desire to pull a mean practical joke at work is an indication of hostility, which has its roots in insecurity and feeling threatened. This indicates that men harbor more anger toward their superiors, while women struggle more with interpersonal conflict, And what kind of practical jokes would people play in the office if they had the courage? I would write fake pink slips for people so they would think they were being fired.” said a male credit expert. “I would tell everyone, one by one, under oath to keep it secret, that I was receiving twice my regularly salary on my debit card. And then I would act really happy to be working and see how the gossip goes around,” said a female medical representative, I would balance a basket full of water on the top of our general director's door.” said a man. I would hide my boss's key to the office in his own pocket or bag, said a secretary.
