The Battle of the Somme The battle of the Somme took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916, with more than one million men wounded or killed. Australian troops consisting of Gallipoli veterans and fresh reinforcements arrived on the Somme in mid-July to support the British attempt to capture the high ground towards the village of Thiepval. The Australians successfully captured Pozières on 23 July 1916 and remained fighting for its possession and that of nearby Mouquet Farm, until 3 September. Within six weeks they had suffered 24,000 casualties, including 6,741 killed.

The Siege of Tobruk th
The year 2016 marks the 75 anniversary of the Siege of Tobruk, one of the first major battles of World War II. The Siege of Tobruk took place between April and December 1941. Australian troops made up more than half of the Allied presence in Tobruk, with more th than 14,000 men from the Australian 9th Division and the 18 th Brigade of the Australian 7 Division, commanded by Lieutenant General Leslie Morshead. As the siege endured over several months, Nazi propagandist Lord Haw Haw (William Joyce) broadcasting from Berlin, said the Allies were caught like “rats in a trap”. The derisive term was embraced by the Australian troops who took great pride in calling themselves the ‘Rats of Tobruk’.
