Inspired by her experiences on the family’s rural properties near Gunnedah and the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Dorothea Mackellar’s poetry reflected a love and appreciation for the variety and beauty of the Australian bush and country living. Her most loved poem, My Country, presented a contrast between the English and Australian landscapes, and inspired patriotic sentiments and a sense of great national pride, particularly in the context of World War I. ‘Of ragged mountain ranges’ describes the unique appearance of the many Australian rocky outcrops and ranges, some of which are among the oldest and most interesting in the world, that are filtered across what is otherwise a very flat continent.
The Bounding Kangaroo The kangaroo is a well-recognised, unofficial national emblem of Australia. Together with the emu, the kangaroo features on the Australian Coat of Arms and has also been featured on circulating currency, the most notable being the Australian $1 coin which depicts five kangaroos grazing. The coin's reverse depicts a high relief reverse design of an adult kangaroo bounding across an Australian landscape at dusk, with the moon and trees in the background.

This limited edition was designed by Dr Stuart Devlin AO CMG, goldsmith and jeweller to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
