The History

Pioneers of Imagination, Spirit, and Performance In 1913, two young graduates of Smith College came to the frontier mountain town of Steamboat Springs, Colorado with a mule name “Tango.” The town was populated with people primarily interested in mining and ranching, and it was Charlotte Perry and Portia Mansfield’s vision to explore and teach “natural dance forms” and artistic expression “close to creatures and out-of-doors.” This dream compelled them to found Perry-Mansfield in this spectacular mountain setting. From humble beginnings in a few rustic cabins and some very lean years where the
“scenery was the salary,” Charlotte and Portia nurtured Perry-Mansfield into one of
the premier performing arts schools and camps in the country. In 1965, Charlotte and Portia gifted the camp to Stephens Collage in Columbia, Missouri.
For twenty-five years, Stephens College continued to provide a summer program, rich with talent, creativity and challenge. In 1990, Stephens College announced plans to sell the historic camp. Perry-Mansfield staff and alumni, as well as the city of Steamboat Springs, banded together to bring it home. The Friends of Perry-Mansfield, Inc. was formed, and continues its operation today. Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp is known for nurturing creative and performing artists and their students, by focusing on an immersive educational experience, camping and equitation. The camp was one of the early pioneers of modern dance, as well as dance therapy and physical therapy and spearheaded the development of children’s theatre, the use of multi-media and theatre-in-the-round. In camping, it helped initiate the studies of survival skills, counselor-in-training programs and standards for equitation. Some of the nation’s first master classes, artist-in-residence programs, national dance tours and formal classes in the creative arts took root at Perry-Mansfield. In its 101+ year history, the camp has inspired distinguished performers, teacher, and a wealth of educated audiences and patrons of the arts. Perry-Mansfield’s campus is on the National Register of Historic Places. We are glad to welcome you to the Perry-Mansfield family and hope that you will be
as challenged and inspired as the many others who have passed through our gates. Congratulations! You are about to become a part of the rich history of Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp.

Handbook

Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts
School & Camp Guest Artist Handbook The following policies address common personnel questions and concerns. The handbook policies has been developed according to the following foundational principle: • All of our actions must be guided by the fact that all Perry-Mansfield Independent Contractors serve as teachers, counselors, mentors,
and role models to our students. Perry-Mansfield is a licensed childcare facility. We must follow strict regulations enforced by the State of Colorado.

When confronting issues that are not covered by this Handbook, use the following questions to help you to use sound judgment and to make good decisions. • What is my responsibility as a Perry-Mansfield Independent Contractor? • What is my responsibility to my students and Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp? • What is my personal and professional sense of integrity? If you have doubts about how you should deal with particular situation, seek guidance from the artistic director of your division. Your director may wish to consult with the Associate Director.

Camp Policies and Procedures Non-Discrimination Policy

Retaliation

It is the policy of Perry-Mansfield to afford equal employment opportunities to Independent Contractors, applicants for employment, and volunteers without
regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, ancestry, disability or veteran status
in accordance with federal, state, and local laws governing non-discrimination in employment.

Perry-Mansfield prohibits any form of retaliation for filing a bona fide complaint under this policy or for assisting in a complaint investigation. Retaliation is subject to appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including contract termination. Similarly, if the investigation of a complaint of unlawful harassment or discrimination reveals that the complaint is not bona fide or that false information has been provided regarding the complaint, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.

This policy also applies to opportunities for advancement, training, termination, relationships with outside vendors,
use of contractors/consultants, and in dealing with the general public.

Harassment
Any form of harassment is strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, harassment of a verbal, written or physical nature that creates a hostile, intimidating, or offensive work environment for an individual. Any
violations which relates to race, color, religion, gender, sexual preference, national origin, age, ancestry, disability
or veteran status, threatens Perry-Mansfield’s commitment to value diversity and is considered grounds for dismissal.

Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment may take the form of unwelcome advances, requests for sexual favors and other similar conduct of a sexual nature, particularly when submission
to such conduct is expressed or implied as a factor in decisions affecting evaluations, casting or other aspects
of opportunity within the program. Sexual harassment also includes actions that interfere with an individual’s work performance or create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment. For independent contractors and guest artists, this policy is especially relevant because of the face-to-face, studio nature of the work for which artists are hired. Guest artists are encouraged to remember that they are teaching and working at a licensed child care facility with a residential (away-from-home) population.

Complaint Procedure
Guest Artists are urged to contact their department head, Associate Director, or Program Coordinator if they feel
they have been the victims of or have witnessed incidents
of harassment or discrimination. Complaints will be immediately and thoroughly investigated, and will be kept confidential. It if is determined that any of these policies have been violated, appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including immediate contract termination, will be taken against the offending individual.

5

Communication
Open communication is vital to the success of camp. We will try to communicate clearly about our philosophy, goals and objectives, and happenings that may concern you. Likewise, we are interested in hearing your feedback about the Camp. If you have any suggestions concerning camp operations
or other matters, please pass them on to the Associate Director. We are consistently seeking new ways to improve camp operations. Teamwork is essential at Perry-Mansfield, as each person plays a major role in each summer’s success. Together, we will maintain our position as one
of the most unique and excellent performing arts summer schools and camps in the world.

Grievances
Perry-Mansfield recognizes the right to express a grievance and a solution. The grievance procedure is as follows: 1. Express concerns and grievances with their immediate supervisor, usually director of your department. 2. If your grievance has not been resolved to your satisfaction, please take the problem directly to the Associate Director. The Associate Director’s decision
will be final and binding and the result put into writing and placed in your file. 3. If your grievance is with the Associate Director or Program Coordinator, please contact the Executive Director to come to a mutual resolution which will be recorded in your file.

Contract Terms Daily Schedule

Pay Schedule

Summer employment at Perry-Mansfield requires flexible hours due to rehearsals, performances, and other necessary activities. Due to these circumstances, Perry-Mansfield requests that guest artists refrain from committing to other jobs — volunteered or paid — during their contract duration. Exceptions must be agreed to in writing with the Department Director and Executive Director.

Paychecks are distributed every two weeks on the 15th and the 30th of every month. All Independent Contractors will receive final payment after completion of all official checkout

Evaluations • Student Evaluations of Guest Artists: All counselors and guest artists will be evaluated by their students. These evaluations will be compiled by the Program Coordinator in the final weeks of camp and given to each guest artist’s department head. The evaluations will be incorporated into a Performance Evaluation which is conducted by the Department Head. The Associate Director will conduct Performance Evaluations with each Department Head. • Performance Evaluations: Each guest artist will have the opportunity sit with his/her department head in the final week of employment. This evaluation meeting may include: responses from the student evaluations as well
as observations from the Department Head. A positive evaluation does not guarantee a position for the following summer. Signed and dated Performance Evaluations will be kept on file. • Guest Artist Evaluations of Students: Each faculty member is required to complete an evaluation of each student’s performance in class and submit it to the Program Coordinator prior to the end of each session. These evaluations will be shared with the students and their parents/guardians. A copy the evaluation will be put in each student’s file.

Health Examinations
All first-year contracted artists are required to have a physical examination within one year prior to the first day
of camp. A completed Health Form must be submitted,
with the last page completed and signed by a physician. Returning guest artists must have a physical every other year. Please check with the office if you are unsure of your last physical. Perry-Mansfield does not have a relationship with a medical provider in Steamboat Springs. We strongly encourage you to have this done prior to arriving in Steamboat Springs.

6

procedures. Note: If all personnel documents are not turned in or on file prior to the first pay period — paychecks will be withheld until such time as the documents are completed. Direct deposit is available and encourage.
If you are interested please fill out the form and provide
a voided check for the account(s) you would like to use.

Rehiring Independent Contractors Perry-Mansfield is eager to have former qualified artists return. However, anyone who has been dismissed prior to completion of contractual agreement or whose personnel records reflect a “do-not-hire” status will not be rehired. Return to a particular position is never guaranteed.

If You Become Sick
Due to guest artists’ short-term contracts, an extended illness may necessitate abbreviating a contract. Compensation will be pro-rated for time on the job.
A camp nurse is available for consultation if illness occurs.

Termination of Agreement
Perry-Mansfield reserves the right to cancel a contract due to low enrollment or for other unforeseeable circumstances. Perry-Mansfield will provide notification of termination as soon as possible. A contract shall continue in force only so long as the guest artist complies with the terms. In case of early departure or dismissal from camp, the salary will be pro-rated according to the number of days actually duties were performed. Reasons for early dismissal are as followed: 1. Failure to comply with the terms of the contract; 2. Violation of alcohol or drug policies; 3. Any instance that makes the guest artist a liability to Perry-Mansfield and its students. Notice of dismissal will be given in writing. The Independent Contractor may appeal a dismissal by submitting a written appeal to the Associate Director within 24-hours of the dismissal notice being served. Anyone who is dismissed
will not be eligible for rehire.

Time Off • Counselors receive a 24-hour and a 6-hour period off each week. The schedule is arranged with the Head Counselor and posted on the Counselor Board. • Each guest artist will have a scheduled period of at least 24-hours off during each seven-day work week which is arranged with each Department Head or immediate supervisor. Camp-wide days off are Saturdays, and therefore guest artists normally will have Saturdays as their free days.

7

Personal and Professional Conduct Policies Code of Personal and Professional Conduct While contracted by Perry-Mansfield, guest artists agree
to adjust their habits and actions to the customs, policies, and ideals of Perry-Mansfield. Independent Contractors are expected to conduct themselves at all times — on camp and away from camp — in a manner that reflects positively upon Perry-Mansfield, and set a good example for their students. Everyone is responsible for creating and maintaining a community atmosphere that values diversity and refrains from discrimination or harassment of any kind.

Guest artists may not work while under the influence of alcohol. Perry-Mansfield upholds Colorado state laws requiring consumers of alcohol to be 21 years of age or older. Any Independent Contractor under the age of 21
who is found to be drinking alcohol is subject to immediate dismissal. Any guest artist who provides alcohol to anyone under the age of 21 — or to a student of ANY age — will also be subject to dismissal. Under no circumstances will counselors be allowed to have alcohol in their living quarters or drink alcohol on camp at any time.

Attendance and Punctuality
In order to set a good example for students and utilize limited time, attendance and punctuality are extremely important. Faculty members are expected to arrive to class on time or early. If you are ill or must be late/absent from
a class, it is your responsibility to notify your Department
Head directly. The Department Head is then responsible
for providing a replacement or canceling the class and ensuring that the students are notified.

Dress Code
 Perry-Mansfield does not have a dress code for faculty teaching artists. However, everyone is expected to dress appropriately. The following clothing is considered unacceptable. • Clothing displaying foul language or sexual references;

Drugs
Any use of illegal drugs while contracted by Perry-Mansfield will result in immediate dismissal. Perry-Mansfield promotes a healthy environment for students to learn and explore their artistic talent. It is in violation of camp policies, as we are a childcare facility under Colorado state law, for campers, faculty and staff
to possess drug paraphernalia and to possess, use,
sell, distribute or procure or to be under the influence of
alcohol, drugs, or other controlled substances. Controlled Substances include, but are not limited to, narcotic drugs, hallucinogenic or mind-altering drugs or substances, amphetamines, stimulants, marijuana, any controlled substances as defined by law. Guest artists found in violation of this rule will be subject to immediately disciplinary action.

• Clothing advertising drug, alcohol or tobacco products; • Clothing which exposes private areas of the body; • Clothing containing offensive slurs; Perry-Mansfield reserves the right to ask anyone who
is dressed inappropriately to change out of that item of clothing immediately. All guest artists are provided with
a camp t-shirt. Everyone is expected to wear the shirt on check-in and check-out days, as well as camp photo days.

Alcohol
Consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited at this child-care facility. We interpret this, for our guest artists, to mean that drinking is not allowed in the presence of students or minors. Alcohol can not be consumed in any way that draws attention to alcohol as a part of campus life.

8

Guest Artist/Student Boundaries
Intimate relationships with students are strictly prohibited, regardless of age, gender, etc. All guest artists are held individually responsible for upholding this policy. Any violation of this policy will result in immediate dismissal. Perry-Mansfield reserves the right to contact the Department of Social Services and/or press legal charges if deemed necessary. Student visitations with a guest artists in their living quarters are strictly prohibited. Faculty-student dating
is strictly prohibited. If you have doubts about how you should deal with a particular situation, seek guidance from your department head.

Smoking
Perry-Mansfield is a smoke-free camp. Smoking is STRICTLY prohibited anywhere on campus and especially
in cabins. Addicted smokers must honor this policy. Due
to the rustic and rural nature of the camp, smoking is an extreme fire hazard.

Tips/Gratuities
In order to uphold the standard of equal treatment for
all students, Perry-Mansfield strongly encourages guest artists to refrain from accepting tips or gratuities from students or parents. We understand the theatrical tradition of acknowledging a teacher with a card or gift, and encourage guest artists to choose an appropriate time or setting for those kinds of interactions, for example, opening night.

9

Student Policies and Guidelines Student Files
All campers’ files are strictly CONFIDENTIAL.

Abuse/Neglect
Under Colorado state law, anyone who suspects child abuse is under obligation to report the situation to the Department of Social Services. Staff members suspecting child abuse should immediately consult the Associate Director.

Sexual Harassment

9:00pm for the Young Artist Intensive students and 10:00pm for the Pre-Professional Intensive students.

Student Grievances
Student complaints about inappropriate behavior on the part of a guest artist must be addressed. These issues should be taken immediately to the Associate Director. Other students complaints that do not seem to be of a serious nature should be taken to the appropriate department head, and a camp incident report should be filed.

Any allegations of sexual harassment must be taken seriously and requires immediate action. Guest artists
should be attentive to the student and reassure him/her
that the right thing was done in alerting you to the situation. Immediately, take the matter to the Associate Director. It is NOT appropriate for one guest artist to confront another.

Housing and Meals

Discipline

Free Classes

Disciplinary actions are occasionally necessary, but must never involve publicly humiliating or frightening a student. Name-calling by is not acceptable behavior. We expect guest artists to model appropriate ways of managing frustration and anger. The preferred disciplinary measure is to have the student sent to the camp office to talk with the Program Coordinator. In most instances, the student will be required to call his/her parents to report the problem behavior and an appropriate camp consequence will be determined.

Class Guidelines
Students are expected to attend all classes and be on time. Any student absent or tardy from class must present a note from the Camp Nurse, Head Counselor, or Program Coordinator in order for it to be excused. No faculty member can excuse a student from attending another faculty member’s class. Any unexcused tardy or absence must be reported as soon as possible to the Head Counselor. We are required by state law to know where each student is at all times. Please help us to do so through these simple attendance policies. Faculty member excusing students from their own classes MUST notify the Program Coordinator before that class.

Rehearsal Guidelines
Before we are a performing arts camp, we are a child-care facility. We must ensure that we are putting the well-being
of our students first. In order to keep up with the demanding schedule of classes, rehearsals, performances and other activities, it is crucial that students have time to relax and get an adequate amount of sleep. For this reason, Directors are responsible for ending evening rehearsals promptly at 10

Room and board are provided for guest artists for the length of their contracts. Cabins are to be cleaned thoroughly prior to check-out. Guest artists understand that their housing is the property of Perry-Mansfield and, as such, will be subject to inspection at any given time by the Facilities Director.

Counselors may enroll in one class, but must remember that their contractual responsibilities take schedule priority.

Medical Care
All guest artists are eligible to use the services of the camp nurse.

Tuition Discounts for Children
Children of our guest artists are eligible for reduction in camp fees. The first child who attends camp is free of charge. Any additional child is offered a 50% tuition discount.

Recreational Privileges
Guest artists are strongly encouraged to participate in evening trail rides, the 4th of July Parade, rafting trips, camp dances, talents shows, etc. Camp Night guests must be approved by the camp office, and seats are subject to availability. Guests will not be charge an admission fee.

Safety Fire Drills
Independent contractors are responsible for identifying all exits and familiarizing themselves with the camp’s evacuation plan. The Routt County Fire Department will conduct a fire drill as many as four times each summer. Each guest artist is expected to take a leadership role in calmly directing students down the driveway to the horse arena near County Road 36. A few tips to remember are:

4.

All injuries and accidents should be promptly reported to the Camp office — no matter how

2.

Ring the dinner bell located outside Main Lodge vigorously or have someone else do so — until instructed to stop by Fire Department.

Student Transportation
Camp vans are available for officially-sanctioned PerryMansfield off-campus activities. Insurance rules stipulate that private — not owned by Perry-Mansfield — cars CANNOT be used to transport students. Anyone transporting students in camp vehicles must abide
 by the following rules and regulations: • Have a valid driver’s license;

3.

Accident Procedures 1.

Students who are injured should be sent immediately to the Infirmary, or if circumstances warrant, to the emergency room of the nearest hospital.

2.

Staff members who are injured should also go to the Infirmary. If the injury is serious, the staff member should go to a physician or hospital for treatment.

3.

Members of the Public who are injured on PerryMansfield property, in an accident involving a PerryMansfield vehicle or in an accident involving a PerryMansfield student or staff member, should be directed to a physician or hospital.

11

• Passengers MUST remain seated while the vehicle is moving; • Passengers must keep all arms, legs, and heads inside the vehicle at all times.

Bonfire
All bonfires must be authorized by the Program Coordinator and arranged by the Facilities Director. Official paperwork must be submitted to the local authorities and the bonfire must be supervised at all times.

Camp Security
A security guard is on duty from 8pm until 12am. The security guard checks all cars coming on camp after 8pm. The front gate is locked at 11pm. Staff members returning
to camp after this time will have to park in Julie Harris Theatre parking area. All visitors who are not part of the residential program that includes guest artists, students, counselors, and staff, must check in at the Main Office between 9am - 5pm. This is not an open campus, and visitors should not be on campus after 5pm unless invited by faculty to view rehearsals or performances.

Important Camp Information Classes and Performance Opportunities • Guest artists are not permitted to audition for student performances. In the instance when all parts cannot be filled by students, Directors may audition approach a specific artist to play the necessary part. • Faculty are encouraged to participate in campus-wide talent shows and contest.

Email
Internet access is limited at Perry-Mansfield, especially for students. Visible use of phones and computers is discouraged in order to create the immersion program for which Perry-Mansfield is known. That being said, there is access to the internet in the small faculty office, and there are opportunities to get online or use computers in support of course preparation work. Please check in the office for more details.
