The news was announced Oct. 18 during a conference call to a standing-roomonly auditorium in Presby’s Philadelphia Heart Institute. On the phone was Donna Havens, PhD, RN, FAAN, the Commission Chair for ANCC. She announced that the commission had voted unanimously that Penn Presbyterian Medical Center had earned Magnet status for the second time in a row. With the announcement, the audience burst into lengthy applause with high fives and hugs all around. PPMC Welcomes Delegation from Chongqing, China Penn Presbyterian Medical Center played host recently to a delegation of Chinese health professionals interesting in learning more about how Presby provides superior care to patients every day. The six-member group hailed from the Chongqing municipality in southwest China and was led by Fang Mingjin, the deputy director of the Chongqing Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission. Bob Russell, associate executive director of Operations at Penn Presbyterian, met with the group and mapped out various aspects of daily life at PPMC, from the hospital’s different service lines, to organization of leadership and management structure, how critical care patients arrive via helipad, staffing ratios and models and much more. Following the discussion, Russell took our guests on a tour of the hospital, including the Trauma and Surgical Intensive Care Unit in the new Pavilion for Advanced Care, and answered questions from the Chongqing officials. “It was an honor and a pleasure to host Mr. Fang and his team,” Russell said. “We’re proud of what we do here at Presby and I’m happy to offer our cooperation.” The visit ended with a round of handshakes in the Cupp lobby and a promise to keep in touch.

the University of Pennsylvania with their own Magnet good news!), Michele Volpe, CEO of PPMC, addressed the crowd: “Congratulations! You’ve done a fabulous, fabulous job. You make us proud.” Then Jim Ballinghoff, MSN, MBA, RN, NEABC, chief nursing officer and associate executive director, took to the dais and gave an effusive thank-you and congratulations to everyone who made the success possible. “I want to congratulate all the people who made this happen. You continually exceed expectations,” he said. “Throughout all of our unprecedented change, you always put our patients, their families, and our community first. That is why we are a Magnet organization.” Magnet designation is issued by the ANCC to hospitals which go above and beyond to provide the best possible patient care and facilitate close collaboration among staff. Magnet status is among the highest professional achievements in nursing a hospital can achieve. The Magnet recognition process include an online application, written documentation, and an on-site visit every four years to ensure qualitative and quantitative outcomes demonstrating success in nursing practice and research. Penn Presbyterian is one of just 28 hospitals in Pennsylvania – which includes all five Penn Medicine hospitals – and 444 hospitals across the globe with Magnet designation. Congratulations to the exceptional team at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center!
