Poca senior Christian Buckley provides a solid force in the paint for the Dots.

A dominant first half performance set No. 1 Poca well on its way to yet another victory in what has been a perfect season thus far. The Dots (14-0) trounced Herbert Hoover 63-23 and held the Huskies to just five points in the first half. “Our defense was outstanding,” said Poca coach Allen Osborne. “Our defense was just solid and really good. I’ll be honest…I’m really pleased with the way we played.” Osborne had every reason in the world to be pleased after the Dots came out of the first quarter with a 15-2 lead. Sophomore Luke Frampton’s stellar play led the charge right from the opening tip as he scored seven first quarter points and Poca went on a 15-0 spurt. “Coach was just pushing us in practice this week saying we had to come out strong,” Luke See Poca, Page 5

Sims Properties, LLC has reached an agreement with Colorado Springs developer Bencor, LLC to construct a 40,000 square foot grocery store with a pharmacy and gas station, said Gary Sims, Sr., CFO of Sims Properties. Sims Properties announced the conceptual plans to Fox Run residents during a Jan. 20 Home Owners Association (HOA) meeting, said HOA President David Conley. The proposed grocery store will sit on eight acres of land directly in front of the 22-house development. “We’ve entered into an agreement with a developer, Bencor, out of Colorado Springs,” Sims said. “They came to us. We’ve

been talking with them since July or August. They had a conceptual drawing. They don’t have firm plans yet.” Johnny Harris, president of the Putnam County Development Authority board of directors, was told the business will be a Wal-Mart. He has not seen the plans himself yet, however. “It doesn’t do the residents any good but create more traffic and a hassle,” he said, adding that a WalMart in that location will not fulfill an area need. “I think with Aldi just moving in to Teays Valley, Kroger has been there for years and years, I think with the businesses that are in Hurricane and the big Wal-Mart there, I think that’s enough to take See Development, Page 3

Hill knows the benefits of CAMC rehab clinic By Amanda Smythers amanda@theputnamstandard.com

On Oct. 2, 1992, Dale Hill of Scott Depot had to undergo a medical procedure few people knew existed, a quintuple bypass. Six weeks later, Hill entered the rehabilitation at CAMC Teays Valley and has been there ever since. Hill, who has been married to his wife, Kathern, for 67 years, goes to the cardiac rehabilitation center at CAMC Teays Valley three times per week, something he has

done every week since 1992. He said the cardiac rehab program has helped him immensely over the years. He only ever had one more cardiac surgery, a quick stent procedure. It was nothing compared to five simultaneous bypasses. “I’m sure that I’m more physically able now than I would have been had I not been coming,” Hill said, after his routine Wednesday session. “It’s helped tremendously.” Hill is a part of the rehab center’s maintenance program, which

helps people like him continue to work out and stay fit even after their immediate recovery is over. “Cardiac rehab is three phases,” said Kelly Stull, head exercise physiologist for the rehab center. “Phase one is in the hospital imSee CAMC, Page 3 Dale Hill of Scott Depot has been participating in CAMC Teays Valley cardiac rehabilitation program since he had a quintuple bypass in 1992.

On Feb. 3, 1943, the U.S. Army Transport Dorchester was tragically sunk in the North Atlantic by a German U-boat. Of the 902 young men on board, only 230 survived. Many of those survivors owe their lives to the courage and leadership exhibited by the heroic Four Chaplains, who in sacrificing their lives, created a unique legacy of brotherhood. Since 1951, thousands of Four Chaplains Interfaith Memorial Services are held across the nation on or near Feb. 3 each year. The Memorial Service is a tribute to those courageous Chaplains and the 672 brave men who lost their lives on that fateful night. Further, the service honors all those who have served, and whose courage and faith have sustained our country. It is imperative that children and youth are taught about these events and great sacrifices, for young people are the future. It is vital for them to

Hurricane excess levy passes by 90 percent By Michael Circle michael@theputnamstandard.com

Mayor Scott Edwards is thrilled that the city of Hurricane gets to keep the police officers, paid firefighters and street department workers. The levy passed by a resounding 90 percent, or 430 voting in favor, while only 48 voted against. “It is exciting. I’m really happy with those numbers, Edwards said. “I’m happy with he turnout. Usually you get a low turnout for a levy. Edwards said he believed the voter turnout was high because of the way officials are running Hurricane. “People have asked me, ‘Hey, why did it pass with such high percentage?’ and I think it’s a couple of things, he said. “One, I think in general, people are happy with the way things are going in Hurricane. People don’t want things to change. If the levy goes away, a lot of things change. The passage of the levy does not cause any new taxes for city

residents. Voters have approved the same levy for the past 68 years. In addition to the city being able to keep its two police officers, two paid firefighters and two street department workers, it will be able to pave and fix pot holes. “The other thing is we told people exactly what would happen if it went away, Edwards said. “If it failed, it went away so we were clear about it. Government doesn’t always do the best job at that and we didn’t want that to be the case here. The excess levy gives the city an additional $376,000. In five years or in 2020 the city of Hurricane will once again put the levy up for a vote. Also during the Feb. 2 meeting Hurricane City Manager Ben Newhouse talked to city council about Project Wet. Project Wet is a program put on by collaboration with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. It allows for fifth graders in Putnam County to learn about forestry, pollution and animals. “We average about 500 kids and we get almost every kid in Putnam

CAMC From Page 1 mediately after their surgery. Phase two generally starts two to three weeks after a stent and six to eight weeks after a bypass surgery. That’s the first outpatient phase and lasts 12 weeks. After the 12 weeks, the patient is prepared to do it on their own at home. While some patients leave after phase two, Kelly said others prefer the center’s environment and stick around – in Hill’s case, for 22 years. “Many choose to stay in our maintenance program, which is long term, she said. “Exercise is a long term commitment. It should just become part of your daily activities. Hill said he varies between exercises, typically rotating between the cycle, treadmill and rowing machine, although some days he still just walks on the treadmill. He said the extra eyes in the center help him feel better about exercising. “I think it does more good for me to come here, he said. “It’s more regulated. Kelly said the program is regulated intentionally, as many patients have concerns over their accepted levels of physical activity. “A lot of time there is a certain fear after they have a heart attack that they’re going to have another one if they do any physical activity, she said. “So we monitor them – heart rate, blood pressure. Get them on the machine start them out slow and build them up from there. It gains their confidence back because they know we’re watching the monitors. Kelly said it is important to

County elementary schools. It’s geared to fifth grade only, Newhouse said. “We bring in speakers from Division of Forestry, DNR, DEP, usually Waste Management comes down. “The kids get an outside classroom experience. They get the chance not to sit in four walls and see the people that do this stuff on a day-to-day basis. Newhouse said the dates for the event are uncertain as of yet but he believed it would take place near the last week of May. In other business: * Council discussed the Main Street Spring Festival. The date and time has been set for 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 2. Hurricane Marketing and Development Manager Vanessa Ervin said the city wants to make the event bigger this year. A barbecue cook-off and a talent show will be added to the list of events. Vendors, organizations or residents interested in registering should contact the city by calling 304-562-5896 or visit the municipal building.

Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards checks out the new firetruck purchased by the Hurricane Volunteer Fire Department. * The city of Hurricane will offer help with tax preparation this year. Volunteer Christine Spaulding has helped the city for several years and will once again be on hand to help residents in the daunting task of preparing their IRS forms for free, Newhouse said. * BCI Modern Day Warriors

will host an Anti-Bullying seminar at Hurricane High School from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. “This seminar is not just for kids that are getting bullied, Edwards said. “It’s just for general kids age 6-16. It’s for kids so they can see the signs of bullying.

to it, I would be out knocking on doors and getting people who are directly affected to sign a petition and present it to the county commission. Mellert said the Fox Run residents will have an opportunity to express their opinions when Bencorp goes in front of the Board of Zoning Appeals. “Everyone within 250 feet will be notified of the public hearing, she said. “The public hearing is the place where people come and give us information. Zoning ordinance requires minimum standards. The Board of Zoning Appeals, one of the things they can do, is ask for standards that are above the minimum. Mellert said the board will look at noise, lighting and traffic requirements, as well as barriers and fences. However, she said, the public’s opinion is also important for consideration.

“One of the things they have to decide is if it’s compatible with that neighborhood, she said. The property is in an unincorporated portion of Putnam County. It would be tied in to Hurricane’s storm water district. Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards said he has been in touch with the developer to pass on the drainage requirements. Edwards said if the zoning appeal is won, all Hurricane can legally do is make sure they are following the requirements provided by the Environmental Protection Agency. Sims said Sims Properties will be holding another meeting with the residents of Fox Run, tentatively scheduled for February. “It will give them an opportunity to ask any other questions and express their concerns, he said. “We’re just trying to be reasonable neighbors and have open dialogue with them.

Development get people exercising and the physiologists do whatever they can to make sure every patient is comfortable. While Hill works out in a class environment with a dozen other patients, new patients are brought in on non-class days and give one-on-one instruction. “If you don’t exercise, there’s a good chance that you’re going to get back in the not eating well, smoking, etc., she said. “Actually the only risk factor exercise won’t help is genetics. You can’t pick your parents but if you think about it, it takes care of your weight, cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure and is good for stress relief. Hill said another reason he continues to attend classes after two decades is the quality of the personnel on staff. “The girls are great, he said. “There have been a few changes since I’ve first started. But Kelly’s been here for several years and Malena also. They have really done a good job. Kelly said her and her staff consider the patients more of a family than anything else. “We pride ourselves on family, she said. “We treat every patient like they’re a member of our family and we consider us a small community hospital. But we do the same things that the larger facilities do also. Hill believes in the program at the cardiac rehab center and hopes others will follow his footsteps. “Anybody who has heart problems should definitely get into this program, he said. “They’re great. They take care of everybody that comes in.

From Page 1 care of the people. I don’t think that is needed right in the middle of everything. Sims said the final purchase of the property will depend on the results of the zoning appeal. Putnam County Planning Committee Director Sandy Mellert said the appeal is necessary because the area is classified as a C1 suburban commercial area. “Any retail store over 5,000 square feet has to have a special permit and that means they have to go in front of the board of zoning appeal, she said. Residents of Fox Run have expressed concerns about the complex, particularly the effect it will have on the traffic pattern in the area and the effect it will have on other local businesses. “I think people are concerned that a zoning law change to allow a fourth gas station property and box store property will potentially change Teays Valley, said Andy Martone, a local resident. “I think it will negatively impact the culture we cherish in Teays Valley. Harris said he understands local residents’ concerns. The Putnam County Development Authority looks for businesses that pay a living wage, provide benefits for employees and want to stay longterm, he said. With Wal-Mart’s reputation of employing mostly minimum wage and part-time hires, Harris is unsure of whether or not it will be a good fit in the county. “I would think that the county would be concerned about people like that, he said. “If I lived in that residential area and was opposed

West Virginia Legislative Update By Del. Jim Butler 14th District We have just completed our second full week of the 2015 Legislative session. Remember as I explain the passage of bills here that I am reporting mostly on the actions of the House of Delegates. On Jan. 27 a bill known as comparative fault passed by 74-25. This would ensure that each person involved in a lawsuit would be held financially responsible for their percentage of fault. This change will put us on par with other states, help improve West Virginia’s reputation on the legal front and help create private sector jobs. I spoke in favor of this bill and voted yes. On Jan. 28 we passed a bill to allow gas well work permits to be transferred in cases where property is exchanged and the purchasing party meets the permit requirements. I voted yes. Later that day a public hearing was held on the subject of public charter schools. Forty-two states now have some charter schools. Its stated purpose is to allow for more flexibility and local control to meet the needs of students. A bill to allow for charter schools is in the works. I am undecided on this issue as much will depend on the details of the bill. On Jan. 29 we passed a bill that had already passed the Senate, SB 3. It provides protection to landowners if an individual illegally enters their property and is involved in an accident. Along a similar line we also passed a bill to limit the liabilities

of landowners who allow recreational aircraft to land on their property. It was introduced at the request of a northern W.Va. pilot. Finally, we passed a bill to remove some restrictions on recording deeds of trust. Many other bills are working their way through committees and the pace will be picking up. I did ruffle some feathers this week by co-sponsoring a bill that would require that the United States Constitution and other founding documents be taught in school. My oversight was that I did not pick up on the language in the bill that required that those things be taught before other forms of government could be discussed. There was also the possibility of a $10 fine and possible reassignment for violation of the provisions in this bill; those penalties were left over from old existing code. The errors could be corrected easily if the bill gets to a committee, but as is the case with politics sometimes small things get blown out of proportion. My intent here was to ensure that instruction time on United States History not be crowded out by other requirements being placed on the schools. We have had several local students at the capitol to help us with the Page Program. If you know a student who would like to participate check with your school office and for homeschoolers or anyone else just call my office. By Del. Jeff Eldridge 22nd District Though we are only two weeks into the legislative session, the House is already hard at work on behalf of the entire state. I’ve been working alongside my fellow legislators to create a better West Virginia. Already the House of Delegates has passed legislation that I hope will prove beneficial to the entire state. The first major bill passed was House Bill 2001. This bill repealed the Alternative and Renewable Energy Portfolio Act. As many of you are aware, this bill had required utility companies to utilize a certain percentage of alternative energy sources to provide energy to consumers. There is a great bit of conflict over this bill, though it is my belief that this bill’s effects never were seen. I stand by when I voted for the passage of the bill in 2009. However, Washington D.C. and the EPA continue to interfere with West Virginia’s economy. So it is with great pride that I vote for this bill’s repeal. We need to send a message to DC that we will not tolerate interference in our state’s economy. And if this bill does save even one job, then it will be worth it. The House also passed a related bill, House Bill 2201. This bill addressed concerns from the repeal of the Alternative and Renewable Energy Portfolio Act relating to net metering regulations. This bill would ensure that these rules and regulations remain in place. All those using net metering will continue to do so in a safe and efficient manner. My work on the Agriculture Committee has also produced results. We have recently moved through House Bill 2105. This would establish a system for the creation and licensing of deer farms and other related wildlife. The creation of deer farms would allow new industry to grow within

TDD: 614-442-4390

our district and the state as a whole. The Energy Committee has also been hard at work. We recently moved forward Senate Bill 280. This bill allows the transfer of work well permits from one company to another without having to reapply. The committee vetted the bill to ensure that adopters of the permits would follow all the applicable regulations and ensure the safety of the company workers and surrounding citizens. This bill will encourage trade and boost the economy. We also went over House Bill 2087. This would allow those who purchase tax liens on property to have the opportunity to also claim any minerals found within the property. In short, this would expand consumer rights and provide fairness in the process of tax liens by allowing all aspects of a property to be claimed by one willing to pay the cost. There is much more work to be done though. The session will only continue to pick up speed as we work on passing more legislation. I encourage everyone to contact me at 304-340-3113 or at jeff. eldridge@wvhouse.gov. I want to hear from you so that I can continue to make West Virginia the wild and wonderful state that it is. By Del. Michel Moffat 22nd District The ideas are flying and bills are moving at the Capitol. Speaking to one of the head bill drafters in the beginning of the week, she told me that at the quarter mark of the session, they had drafted as many bills as they did all of last year. A total of 525 of those have made it through the Speaker’s office and on to the Committee process. Six of those made it out of Committee and received overwhelming bipartisan support on the floor. Some of the highlights were three that focus on improving our legal system. Landowners are now protected from trespassers that would get hurt and want to sue; those that have land and want to allow a recreational use airplane to land on it are no longer in fear of lawsuit; and busi-

nesses and individuals that are partially responsible in a court case for damages will only pay their portion of the bill. These may seem like small issues but they are all part of a move to improve our great State. In our Gov. Org Committee, we have passed bills to require the Potomac Highlands Airport Authority which receives over $200,000 per year but has refused to be audited since the1990’s to undergo audits. The State Agency Audit schedule has been increased from seven years to four years and all Public Works will also undergo audits. All to make sure the government is more accountable to the people. In Political Subdivisions, a hot button issue is clean air and smoking. It is up for debate on Monday. Hancock County is looking to ban smoking everywhere. The private clubs and the casino along with many in the public want to allow smoking only in designated smoking areas. The bill has caused quite a stir thinking that all existing indoor air regulations will be overturned but amendments have been submitted to protect the interests of the smoker and the non-smoker. In roads and transportation, we are looking at following the Federal Open Container laws. If we ban open alcohol containers in cars on highways, then instead of using the $7 million dollars that comes in for advertising and such, we can put that toward road repair. The language needs to be fixed to still protect those that may be hauling bags of recyclables that have residue left. Personally, I made national news by cosponsoring a bill to focus on teaching the Constitution and having a strong foundation in American history. But the controversy helped expose a problem in current code which requires teachers to be charged with misdemeanors and fines for not teaching about STDs, AIDS, healthy eating and substance abuse. If there are issues that you would like to see us address please contact us. I can be reached at the Capitol Room 206E at 304-340-3152, or Michel.Moffatt@WVHouse.gov or on Facebook www.facebook.com/ Delegate.Michel.G.Moffatt.

HOSA, Skills USA thank board for support By Zach Cumberland zach@theputnamstandard.com Putnam Career & Technical Center students presented school board members with the beneficial aspects of two career technical organizations - Health Occupations Students of America and Skills USA. Putnam Career and Technical Center Principal Mike Erwin said that participation in student organizations is required as part of the career and technical education curriculum statewide. “It truly gives the students a life skill that they can take with them,” he said during the Feb. 2 regular board meeting. “They actually get a head start on college. A motivated student could actually be finished with an associate degree when they graduate from high school. They truly have to be on the ball with online classes and be dually enrolled in some of their academics at their high schools, plus their programs specific courses at our school.” Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) was founded in 1976. The organization’s mission is to develop leadership and technical skills through a process of motivation, awareness and recognition. Every year, HOSA completes a service project. This year the group chose the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which raised almost $1,300. At the state and national level, there are 75 different competitions that students involved with HOSA compete in to show skill demonstrations and build leadership and employment processes.

Students and faculty members involved with HOSA and Skills USA thanked the Putnam County Board of Education for their continued support. “HOSA helps us to get out there school’s chapter of health occupa- tional, regional and state competi- receiving. Poca From Page 1 Frampton said. “He pushed us all week and got us ready and we came out strong. All we worked on in practice was defense…defense… defense.” The Huskies, averaging 62 points per-contest coming into the game and winners of their last three out of four, were held to just 22 percent shooting. Poca outrebounded Hoover 42-19. The Dots took a commanding 28-5 lead into halftime and even with the big point spreads they’ve become accustomed to, the entire emphasis is to get better each time out, Osborne said. “Every possession is important,” he said. “We try to play for 32 minutes and put a whole game together and not look at the scoreboard. I just thought we dominated the game.” Poca followed the dominating first quarter with a very similar second. The Dots put together a 13-0 run before Hoover managed to knock down a free throw just before the break. Sophomore Elijah Cuffee was instrumental in the win, playing an excellent all-around game and fill-

ing the stat sheet with eight points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. Cuffee nearly had double digits in rebounds by the end of the first half. “I got the right bounces at the right times,” Cuffee said. He also threw some stellar no look passes and hit his teammates under the basket when, perhaps, they didn’t even know they were open. “I just saw my teammates pop open at the right times,” he said. “They’re always running the right the plays.” Even though the Dots were up by a wide margin at the half, Cuffee said Osborne told them not to let up and to keep working. The Dots definitely kept working in the second half and finished the third quarter up 49-15. Osborne said he was pleased with senior Noah Frampton’s lock-down defensive performance against Herbert Hoover guard Matt Justice, as well as senior Matt Chandler’s 14 point, eight rebound night. Senior Christian Buckley also chipped in with two points and six rebounds. “We wanted to be the aggressor,” Osborne said. “We scouted

Herbert Hoover against Chapmanville and they beat Chapmanville. We didn’t want to give them any easy looks at the basket and I thought we did that. I thought our defense was great.” The Dots have won all 13 games this season by double digits. The closest one came against Chapmanville when the Tigers tried to slow down the pace to a near halt, but to no avail. In a rematch with Chapmanville Monday evening, the Dots extended its perfect record winning 63-53. Poca closed out the fourth frame against Hoover with ease and pushed the lead all the way out to 59-21 on another basket by Cuffee. Luke Frampton finished with 17 points and six rebounds to lead the Dots. Noah Frampton ended with eight points to go along with five rebounds. Junior Kaden Meeks chipped in with eight points of his own to give Poca its usual balanced scoring threat. Junior Austin Heinrich notched two points. Sophomore center Sam Dotson hit two free throws late and junior guard Shawn Arthur

Winfield girls battle back, fall to Midland By Zach Cumberland zach@theputnamstandard.com The Lady Generals might be low on numbers this season, but they’re certainly not low on heart. Winfield battled back to within two points of a game tying basket before falling to Cabell Midland, 59-55. Once again senior Haylea Roberson led the way for the Lady Generals (3-11) with a game high 27 points. Sophomore Rachel Kraschnewski finished with 13 on the night to go along with eight rebounds and senior Cheyenne Sawyers just missed turning in a double-double with nine points and 10 boards. Winfield never led in the contest, but kept the score close the entire game. The Lady Generals never found themselves down by more than 11 points, but couldn’t get over the hump to take the lead. “Cabell Midland shot really well,” said Winfield coach Chuck Slater. “Then we had a few kids in foul trouble. Sydney and Meagan Cavender are both very good defenders and they really tried hard.” Even though his team couldn’t pull ahead, Slater said he was proud of the effort and he was happy with the way the girls hung in from start to finish. With the Lady Generals down 31-26 at the half, Slater decided to make some adjustments in order to try and cool off the hot shooting of Cabell Midland (7-6). “We switched to a 2-3 defense,” he said. “We tried to open the game with a 3-2, but we weren’t getting to the corners quick enough to stop their shots. They shot very well in the first half. Then we came out late in the second half and played a 2-3. “In the last few minutes, we tried to go man to man. I would’ve

liked to go man to man earlier in the game, but we just don’t have enough kids and I didn’t want them to run out of gas. We didn’t want anyone to foul out.” Winfield cut the 31-26 halftime deficit down to just two after Roberson knocked down a 3-pointer. Then Cheyenne Sawyers grabbed a rebound off of her own miss and put it back in, midway through the third, to pull Winfield within four at 35-31. The Lady Generals were down 48-42 at the end of the third. “We were pretty strong at the beginning of the game,” said freshman Sydney Cavender. “But then we kind of died out. We’re really young right now with only two seniors, but I think in a couple years we’ll be really good. “I think whenever we started to make a comeback, we’d be running up and down the court so much that we would get tired and we’d let them score, but we just don’t have enough players on the bench to be able to substitute in and out.” Sophomore Meagan Cavender got things going in the fourth quarter with a basket to pull the Lady Generals within seven and then followed it up by hitting one of two free throws. She finished with six points. “We need to work on our defense,” Cavender said. “And moving the ball around more. We tend to favor certain players instead of looking at our options. With time I think we’ll get better.” Another 3-pointer by Roberson cut the Midland lead to 57-53 with 10 seconds to play, but the shot was too-little too-late. Winfield couldn’t overcome the high-low combo of Haley Haggerty and McKenna Adkins for Cabell Midland. Haggerty finished with 23

Above, senior Cheyenne Sawyer puts up a free throw as teammates look to crash the glass. Sawyer finished with nine points to go along with eight rebounds. Below, Winfield’s Haylea Roberson rises up for a 3-pointer against Cabell Midland. Roberson finished with a game high 27 points to lead the Lady Generals in the 59-55 loss. points and Adkins had 15. “We had Cheyenne and Rachel stay home down low on the block,” Slater said, when talking about the defensive game plan. “Adkins is a pretty strong girl and I saw her play before, so I knew she was going to do well.” Winfield continues to show progress, now they just need to get over the hump. “We may have not won very many games, but we’ve come really close to a lot of teams that are ranked,” Sydney Cavender said. The Lady Generals will play at St. Albans at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6.

Hurricane wins in OT as Bellomy hits 1,000 By Michael Circle michael@theputnamstandard.com

Winfield’s 21-point loss to Hurricane in December was still fresh on the players’ minds when they hosted the Redskins last weekend. Playing with an air of revenge, the Generals fell to their county rival 76-75 in a contested and defensive battle that included an overtime period. During the game Winfield senior Bear Bellomy earned his 1,000th point. He was awarded a plaque and game ball for his monumental achievement. “It’s just nice to get it off my chest,” said Bellomy, who is in his third year of varsity ball. “I could not have done it without coach [Pat] McGinnis, who was here previously, or coach [Bryan] England for believing in me for all of my time here in Winfield.” Bellomy started his high school basketball career as a freshman but did not earn a spot with the varsity team until late in his sophomore year. Bellomy thought he never would have seen it happen in such a short time, he said. “Coach McGinnis believed in me and started me in the middle of my sophomore year and they’ve stuck with me for three years and they’ve been great to be around,” Bellomy said. England was more than a little happy to see Bellomy earn his prize. “I’m proud of Bear,” he said. “He has really come a long way. Today, he showed leadership that I think is going to take him to the next level.”

Despite Bellomy’s 18 points and his teammates Heath Diehl’s 20 points and Alex Osburn’s 17 points, Hurricane pulled out the win after being behind as much as 14 points in the first half. Winfield took the lead in the first quarter, 9-8, and held it until Hurricane’s J.T. Rogoszewski reclaimed it with a 3-pointer, making it a 42-41 game early in the third. The Redskins held the lead for six minutes before the Generals took it back, beginning the scoring frenzy. “[Winfield] came out and played well,” Rogoszewski said. “We came out with a little too much confidence after the big win against Spring Valley. Winfield remembered us beating them pretty well and came out to kill us. “You can’t take anyone lightly in this game. Everyone has a chance to beat you.” Rogoszewski scored 29 points for the Redskins and knocked down 12-of-14 from the line. Teammate senior Brandon Ford also outdid himself from the field. Ford had 27 points in the game and stepped into the role of the third scoring option for Hurricane. “The win feels good,” Ford said. “Rogo and Dawson got good heavy pressure on [Winfield] and I just had to step up and take it to the basket more tonight. It shows that we can grind out a game and we never dropped our heads no matter what.” Ford went 9-of-13 from the free-throw line and grabbed eight boards. He made one of his last two free throw attempts with three seconds on the clock to take a last second lead at 76-75 to help Hur-

ricane win the game. Overtime did not look like a probable option with a minute left in the fourth quarter, as Winfield led Hurricane 65-61. Rogoszewski put up a layup to bring the score to within two and a Winfield foul put Redskins’ Noah Fenerty on the line. After making only one of his first five free throws, Fenerty made up for it by sinking his last two and sending the game to overtime. Winfield’s Osburn took a last second shot that looked like a gamewinning score but the ball bounced back out of the rim and fell dead. “It felt good to have Hurricane to the ropes but it doesn’t feel good enough,” Osburn said. “We just need to lock down on defense. We had more heart than we did last time. We didn’t back down and we had a fight.” The overtime period was challenging for the Generals who were down three starters who fouled out but young Winfield players did not give up. During overtime Hurricane knocked down the first shot only five seconds in and Osburn tied the score again at 67-all with two successful free throws. The shootout continued as the score was tied at 67, 69, 71, 73 and 75. With three seconds left, Ford made his last trip to the line and sunk the only shot that mattered. The basket boosted Hurricane to its fourth straight win at 76-75. “Lucky. Very lucky,” Hurricane Coach Lance Sutherland said of Hurricane’s narrow win. “Winfield had a great team. Our press didn’t work. I dug us a hole because I thought we could press them and they’ve greatly improved. We battled back, we persevered and didn’t give up. We did what we needed to do. “Sometimes, it’s good to be lucky and we were. We were very lucky. That goes to the way Winfield made us play so hats off

Strong second half lifts Winfield over Midland By Zach Cumberland zach@theputnamstandard.com Winfield turned what was a competitive first half at Cabell Midland into a second half blowout, as they easily disposed of the Knights 65-44. The Generals put together a full four-quarter performance for the first time in a while. The Generals had been looking for some consistency coming into the matchup and coach Bryan England said the teams’ solid defensive performance is what drove them to victory. “For the first time this season I saw us get a lead and maintain a lead,” England said. “Defensively, I thought we played our best game this year, so that’s something that’s been a premium that we’ve been working on and I thought we rebounded well. “I just thought the effort was better and when our effort is good we can play with anybody and we can beat a lot of good teams. I was glad to see guys step up and we needed to win one.” Despite a quick start by Cabell Midland, the Generals (5-9) were able to get on the board when senior Bear Bellomy hit a deep 3-pointer to pull the team within four, 7-3, early in the first quarter. Another Bellomy basket midway through the first quarter gave Winfield its first lead at 10-9. Midland’s Mark Wilcox answered with a 3-pointer shortly after to put the

Knights back on top 14-12. It was the last lead Midland would have. Two free throws by Winfield’s Tate Hancock pulled the Generals even at 14-all. A fast break bucket off of a Midland turnover by Heath Diehl gave Winfield a lead they would not relinquish. Senior Alex Osburn closed out the first frame by beating the buzzer and lifting the Generals to an 18-14 lead. England decided to start sophomore Kyle Machel. Machel has been the most consistent defender on the JV squad, England said. “He’s had a great attitude,” England said. “Kyle is a ‘yes sir, no sir’ kind of guy. He’s a great kid and he’s a sophomore, so he’s a young guy. “I refer to him as my ‘pit bull’ because he’s a hard-nosed defensive guy and that’s what I was looking for. He stepped in and did a good job for his first start in a while.” It was rather fitting that England referred to Machel as a hard-nosed defender. One of Machel’s nostrils had to be stuffed up with gauze after taking a shot to the face. Machel also hit a 3-pointer from the corner just before the second quarter came to an end to give Winfield a 29-21 halftime advantage. “At halftime, we really talked about coming out with more urgency,” said junior guard Peyton Moore. “Because we didn’t play the best first half, so we really talked about playing harder and

playing with more toughness and being smarter. It really helped us out.” The second half was all Winfield. A three man scoring combo of Bellomy, Diehl and Osburn torched the Knights (2-11) for 21 second half points. The three combined for 50 of Winfield’s 65 total points. “They’ve been pretty consistent,” England said. “Even in our losses they’ve been consistent. I thought Bear played a good floor game as a point guard. He obviously got his points, but I thought he was hitting some open guys today and I thought that really helped our team out. “We missed some chippies out there, but those things are going to fall as the season goes along.” The baskets certainly fell in the second half. The Generals expanded their lead out to 43-32 by the end of the third and then used a 22 point fourth quarter explosion to blow the door right off its hinges and finish out the game strong. Winfield held Midland to their second lowest offensive output of the season [44 pts]. “Coach told me to have a hand up in Cole Tilley’s face when he was shooting the ball,” Osburn said. “We wanted to make him drive and penetrate and not let him shoot outside shots.” Winfield also used a newly added press to their advantage, which gave Midland some fits. “We put it in recently,” Osburn said. “It’s a 2-2-1. We’ve been do-

I like it.” Bellomy led Winfield with 20 points and nine rebounds on the night, followed by Osburn with 16 points and nine rebounds. Diehl rounded out the three man tandem with 14. John Hathaway added six and Hancock ended with four. “I just thought overall the kids played hard and played well,” England said. “We’re just hoping we can sustain this.” The Generals will host St. Albans at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5. Collins nets 26, Lady Dots fall to Chapmanville By Zach Cumberland zach@theputnamstandard.com Poca freshman Molly Collins came into the Chapmanville matchup a bit under the weather, but that didn’t stop her from knocking down seven 3-pointers and nearly leading the Lady Dots to an upset victory over Chapmanville. “I’m sick, so I didn’t think I was going to do very good,” Collins said. “I kind of surprised myself. Everybody told me that I should just let people sneeze on me before every game.” Collins barrage of 3’s began midway through the first quarter when she struck from behind the arc to put the Lady Dots up 7-4. Teammate McKenzie Ball provided Poca with a strong one-two scoring punch throughout the night. The Lady Dots ended the first quarter all tied up at nine. “We knew that Chapmanville would be a tough matchup,” Ball said. “We worked on breaking their press and we knew it was coming. We had a certain setup that we were in and then we just wanted to make sure someone was in the middle every time, just so we could try to break it.” Chapmanville (12-4) used the full-court press throughout the

game, but when the Lady Dots broke the press it led to some wide open looks. They were able to take full advantage. Collins opened the second frame with a 3-pointer, which was followed by another basket from Ball, giving the Lady Dots a 14-13 lead. “Molly came off the bench,” said Poca coach Kenny Sayre. “All these girls have the green light if I know they can shoot. Molly came to me the other night against Wayne and asked if I wanted her to keep shooting and I said ‘yeah I have all the confidence in the world in ya.’ The girls know I have their back and I wouldn’t want them in the game if I didn’t want them shooting 3’s.” The lead jumped back and forth midway through the second until another Collins 3-pointer put Poca ahead 20-18. Ball followed with a shot of her own from long range to put the Lady Dots up by five. Poca went into the break with a 25-22 advantage. “Coach just told us to continue to put our effort out there and just keep handling things the way we were,” Ball said, regarding the halftime speech. The Lady Dots (6-10) managed six points in the third quarter. Collins struck with another 3-pointer

with 20 seconds remaining in the third to pull Poca within one at 31-30. Together, Collins and Ball combined for 39 of Poca’s 45 total points. “I knew if we didn’t turn the ball over and we boxed out we’d have a chance,” Sayre said. “I think we had about 12 turnovers and that’s what we’ve been averaging. I knew they we’re going to press and I think we did well against their press, so I knew that was going to be tough. We didn’t have too many turnovers against the press.” Chapmanville converted 24-of33 free throws attempts, which is what Sayre said eventually won them the game. The Tigers are also a team that puts great emphasis on getting to the basket and getting fouled, he said. Collins barrage continued well into the fourth quarter as she found the range once again with six minutes to go to pull Poca within two. Then, just one minute later, Collins burned the net to give the Lady Dots a one point lead forcing Chapmanville coach Dave Williamson to stop the momentum with a timeout. The Tigers did answer coming out of the timeout, hitting one of two free throw attempts, but a 3-pointer from Ball lifted the Lady

The Tigers then went on to convert two more at the charity stripe and finish

When asked what contributed to the great night from behind the arc for the Lady Dots, Ball responded… “Kenny always says ‘let it fly.’”

Lady Redskins defeat Winfield girls in OT By Michael Circle michael@theputnamstandard.com

A key rebound and a buzzerbeating, full-court-running layup by Hurricane’s Abby Watson forced an already exciting game between county rivals Hurricane and Winfield into overtime. “When it sunk, I was super happy but when I put the ball up, I was super scared,” Watson said. “I didn’t think I was going to make it down the court in five seconds.” The spark by Watson helped propel the Lady Redskins in the overtime period where Hurricane defeated a tough Winfield team, 59-54, improving its record to 11-4. “The first quarter, we came out strong and played decent,” said Hurricane coach Austin Lowe. “In the second and third quarter we kind of got lazy. We let them hang around and gave them some confidence to play with us. “Winfield played hard. I told [the Redskins] all week they were coming to play and they came to play.” Winfield coach Charles Slater was happy with the Lady Generals’ performance. “We had a very good effort and we should have won in regulation but we missed eight free throws,” he said. “It’s all you can do sometimes. Effort-wise and intensitywise, we were right there with them.” The two teams fought hard for four quarters. Winfield took an early lead in the first quarter, but Hurricane’s Mary Rogoszewski from hit a 3-pointer to put the Lady Redskins ahead. Hurricane was able to keep the lead going up by as many as 10 points before the Lady Generals found new momentum. Winfield outscored its hosts 13-7 in the second quarter tying the game at the half, 24-24.

The Lady Generals came out of the locker rooms after halftime ready to continue its quest for a win. Winfield led part of the third quarter and all of the fourth. Soon the Lady Redskins found themselves down by eight, 50-42 midway through the fourth quarter. With less than a minute to play Hurricane junior Kaylee Wooten stepped up and knocked down a 3-pointer that would bring the Lady Redskins to within one point of the Generals. “I felt pretty good about myself after,” Wooten said of her shot. “But this game taught us we can’t take people lightly at all. We came out flat and almost got our butts beat for it.” After Wooten’s three, Winfield’s Sydney Cavender scored on a single free throw to put the Lady Generals up, 52-50. Rogoszewski was fouled and stepped to the line. She made one of her two shots with 20 seconds to go. Next it was Winfield’s Cavender turn. She was fouled and stepped up to the line with five seconds left on the clock. The first shot fell but second one rimmed out letting Watson score to tie the game at 53-53. Winfield started the overtime period with the ball but Hurricane’s quick defense stuck to the ball preventing the Lady Generals from shooting. The Lady Redskins took control on a steal and a couple of quick scores to win the game. Watson finished the game with 25 points for the Lady Redskins, 13 rebounds and four assists. “We did the best to our ability with what we have,” said Winfield’s Cheyenne Sawyers. “We knew that we’ve regrouped since last time we played them so we thought we could fight hard and possibly win.” Sawyers had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Winfield’s Cheyenne Sawyers passed the ball to teammate Rachel Kraschnewski, through Hurricane’s Mary Rogoszewski (24), Abby Watson (12) and Emily Browning (5). Photos by One-Eyed Jack’s Photography Rachel Kraschnewski, who was injured for their last game against Hurricane, scored 13 points as well and grabbed a game high of 20 boards. “We just wanted to have a positive attitude coming out to this game,” Kraschnewski said. “You never want to come out to a game like ‘we’re going to lose’ because you’re destined to lose. So we just came our with the best attitude and played to the best of our ability.” Hurricane will travel to Nitro to face the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6. The Lady Generals will be across the river in St. Albans at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6. Hurricane’s Mary Rogoszewski drives around Winfield’s Sydney Cavender during the Jan. 29 rival game. The Winfield girls swim team defeated the Lady Redskins and took home the first place trophy at the county’s swim meet.

The Hurricane swim team was crowned overall champion of Putnam County and the boys team defeated Winfield during the swim meet on Jan. 27.

Hurricane, Winfield swim teams finish first By Michael Circle michael@theputnamstandard.com

The Putnam County swim meet is always competitive and this year was no different. County rivals Hurricane and Winfield battled in the pool with multiple swimmers posting best times. After four hours and the scores were totaled, each school took home a trophy. The Hurricane boys swim team defeated Winfield, 554-410, while the Lady Generals defeated the Lady Redskins, 520-316. “They did very well,” said Hurricane coach Kathi Shurow. “The water was warm so it was a little slow but we did well.” The Lady General coach was just as proud of her swimmers performance. “I was really proud of every single one of them,” said Winfield assistant coach Dallas McNab. “They came out all year, they swam hard and it paid off for them tonight. “Even though this is an individual sport, this is still a team. At the end of the day, what you get out of it is what you put into it.” Hurricane’s first win of the night came with the boys 200-yard medley relay team. The team of Austin Harper, Robbie Pearson, Quin Shurow and Luke Earls finished with a time of 1:50.95. Hurricane’s team B, Ty Bayliss, Caleb Laskey,

Trevor Withrow and Cole Newman, finished second with a time of 2:10.96. Harper also controlled the 200yard freestyle, winning with a time of 2:07.84. Earls edged out his personal best in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.10. Hurricane senior Conner Bragg is in his first year of competitive swimming. He finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28.27, a personal record for Bragg. “I think I’ve gained a lot of experience as far as swim team goes,” he said. “The other thing I’m extremely grateful for is, I’ve been on a lot of teams in my life, I’ve played a lot of sports, but this is the most close-knit and hardworking team I’ve ever been on. It’s the true definition of a family. “They’ve helped me through some of the hardest times in my life and it’s been a blessing.” Bragg also broke his personal best in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:04.33, two seconds better than his previous time. The Lady Generals did not wait long to take over the girls scoring. Winfield freshman Morgan Gray earned a win for the Lady Generals in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:02.92, nearly six seconds better than second place. “It was a small meet but I feel like we did pretty well,” Gray said. “In meets like this, we can learn to appreciate all of the swimmers

even from the other teams because we all come together to do one thing we all love to do.” Gray also beat her personal record in the 200-yard freestyle time with 2:21.05. She also participated on the 200-yard freestyle relay team which finished first place, with a time of 1:51.21, along with Sydney Hancock, Madison Gray and Alyssa Rittinger. Rittinger, Hancock and Madison Gray also won the 200-yard medley relay, with the addition of Sydney Roda, with a time of 2:04.19. Despite not having the depth of Winfield’s girls team, Hurricane girls didn’t hold back. The Lady Redskins finished second and third place in the 200-yard medley relay team of Taylor Haney, Alexia Assi, Madisyn Lyons and Grace Peyton. Hurricane’s team B of Morgan Courtright, Jenna Crouch, Gracie Krisher and Meghan Shaffer finished third, 2:26.58. “We’ve all worked so hard for [regionals] and we are ready,” Courtright said. “We’re strong and confident and we know how to swim.” For the Winfield boys Jared Wollaber won both the 200-yard individual medley, with a time of 2:24.17, and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:52.60. Other team strengths included Danny Synder’s fourth place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.16. “Swimming has grown to be

Above, Winfield senior Jared Wollaber won both of his individual events, 200- yard and 500-yard freestyle. Below, Hurricane sophomore Alexia Assi placed first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:39.03.

a passion this year,” Snyder said. “It’s definitely something I enjoy a lot. “This team is full of a lot of great people. The coaches are really

patient with you and it’s just a great experience.” Both schools and teams are gearing up for regionals this Saturday, Feb. 7 at Marshall University.
