Cabell County has first samesex marriage By Amanda Smythers amanda@theputnamstandard.com

After a year of waiting for the results of a lawsuit of two same-sex couples against two West Virginia county clerks, the West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announced last week that he would no longer seek to defend the state’s mandate on marriage, opening the gate for same-sex marriages across the state. “On Oct. 6, 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court decided it would not take up the decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit to set aside Virginia’s law regarding same-sex marriage,” he said in a statement. “By refusing to consider the appeal, the Supreme Court has caused the Appeals Court’s decision to become final and binding on West Virginia.” Cabell County whose clerk, Karen Cole, was one of two clerks named in the lawsuit, had one of the first couples to benefit from the change. Cabell residents Casie McGee and Sarah Adkins were married shortly after the announcement on Cabell’s courthouse steps.

“I think it was a nervous and exciting time for them and for everyone really,” said Aaron Dunn, an ordained minister for the Unitarian Universal Life Church who performed the wedding ceremony. “So many emotions and desires were bound up with that lawsuit.” Dunn said the wedding took place immediately following the state’s announcement. The happy couple got to the courthouse just in time to get a license before the end of the day. “It all happened so fast,” Dunn said. “We had about 15 minutes before the courthouse closed to get the marriage license. In that moment, it was all nervousness from the shock of it and the excitement of it all. It was a joyous occasion.” Dunn said the newlyweds had no problem getting in and out of the clerk’s office, a big difference from last September when they initially attempted to apply. “We never really had any issues,” he said. “This was a new process but I felt they were adequately prepared. They had the

Cook wins The Chew challenge

By Amanda Smythers amanda@theputnamstandard.com The Cabell County Schools Food Service Program has again taken the national stage, this time getting attention from as high up as the White House. Mary Cook, a 21-year employee for Cabell County and the current cafeteria manager at the Village of Barboursville Elementary, won the hearts of the judges and first lady Michelle Obama when she presented Cabell’s staffcreated spaghetti and meat sauce recipe on ABC’s “The Chew,” winning the food healthy challenge by beating two other contestants from

school districts in Maryland and New York. “It was probably one of the most exciting thing I’ll ever do in my life,” Cook said. “It was wonderful.” The episode, which aired Oct. 4 and is still available to watch online, had Cook elbow-toelbow with the first lady, who, Cook later found out, had hand-picked Cabell’s recipe to win. “She was so nice,” Cook said. “It was wonderful because when I walked out, she had her arms open. She was really friendly and nice and down to earth.” Cook said the judges told her they had picked See The Chew, Page 15

No. 2 Midland loses homecoming game to No. 1 Capital By Zach Cumberland zach@theputnamstandard.com During pregame warm-ups Tyrell Davis of Capital barked over to the Cabell Midland student section and confidently said “this is our homecoming!” Whether Davis knew it or not, he had just foreshadowed what was to come. On homecoming evening at Cabell Midland High School the Capital Cougars (6-0) came in ranked No. 1 in Class AAA, with

the Knights right on their heels at No. 2. Midland jumped out to an early lead when senior quarterback Coy Pettit crossed the goal line putting the Knights up 6-0. The extra point was added soon after, making the score 7-0 just 2:32 into the first quarter. Less than one minute later, the Cougars answered right back when senior running back Kashaun Haley, who is a Division 1 prospect, scored one of his three touchdowns

to tie the game at 7. Haley frustrated the Knights defense all night long piling up 219 yards on 18 carries. He sat out the previous game against Huntington due to a knee injury. “I didn’t play last week,” Haley said after the game. “I was upset See Football, Page 15 Shelby Hill is Cabell Midland’s 2014 Homecoming Queen. O’Dell retires from Cabell County Schools By AmandaSmythe rs amanda@theputnamstandard.com

After 39 years and many titles, Assistant Superintendent Mike O’Dell will be retiring from Cabell County Schools Oct. 25. O’Dell’s retirement was unanimously approved by the Board of Education at the regular meeting Oct. 7 in front of a room filled with well-wishers and tearing eyes. “The good Lord took a good boy from Pinch, W.Va., and helped me get where I’m at,” O’Dell said. “I’m most appreciative of all the opportunities I’ve had. I’m eternally grateful for that.” O’Dell began his career with Cabell County schools as a teacher at the old Johnston Elementary in Huntington in 1975. After teaching for nearly seven years, O’Dell moved up to be an assistant principal in his hometown at Milton Elementary, where he stayed for the next seven years. He then went on to become the principal of Merrit’s Creek Elementary before taking his most treasured post as principal of Culloden Elementary.

Assistant Superintendent Mike O’Dell will retire from Cabell County Schools Oct. 25. “That’s where I did my best work,” O’Dell said. Culloden was the last post he held within the school, as a move to central office suited him well. From an overseer of elementary curriculum, to director of buildings and grounds to his current post as Assistant Superintendent of Operations, O’Dell has never met a project he couldn’t accomplish.

“He leaves a legacy of leadership and work ethic that I don’t think can be surpassed,” said Superintendent Bill Smith. “I think the best thing about working with him is that when he brings you a recommendation, it’s thoroughly researched. He’s always thorough. He should without a doubt feel a sense of pride of what he brought to the table.” O’Dell has been over operations for about 10 years during which he has spearheaded dozens of projects including the passing of the bond, the new Milton Middle School, the Cox Landing Transportation Complex, the Milton preschool complex and the current Culloden Elementary construction. “Looking back, it’s remarkable what he’s been able to accomplish and oversee,” said board president Suzanne Oxley. “We wish you the best and appreciate what you’ve done.” O’Dell told the board he couldn’t have accomplished as much without the support of his family, which includes his wife, Joan, son, Brian, and grandchildren Alek and Zoey.

“I’m grateful for Cabell County,” he said. “But I’ve been cheating this whole time. God gave me the best wife – she’s my secret weapon. I couldn’t have done it without her.” O’Dell said retirement wasn’t an easy decision, but that Cabell County students wouldn’t go too long without seeing him. “This has been gut wrenching,” he said. “It’s been miserable. It’s just time to do other things. But I’m going to get on the sub list.” O’Dell’s last board meeting will be Oct. 21. Smith said the position will be open to bidders as soon as possible. In other news: * Two Cabell County school bus drivers won first place at the State School Bus Safety Roadeo. John Labus and Joey Goodpastor won the accolade for the third consecutive year. “These gentlemen represent Cabell County well,” said Joe Meadows, director of transportation. “These two gentlemen have won first place in the state for the last three years. It’s nothing that I

do, but it’s certainly nice to be part of that experience.” * The board voted to proceed with construction on the Incubator School project as planned despite recommendations from the State Historic Preservation Office. O’Dell said the requested list of amendments would cause the entire project to have to be rebid, costing the taxpayers more time and money. “If it costs us time and major recommendations, I’m not interested in recommending it,” Smith said. “I just don’t want us to wait on this project any longer.” The vote past with four in favor and Karen Nance abstaining. * The board voted in favor of sending a letter of support for Cabell Huntington Hospital’s acquisition of St. Mary’s Medical Center. Smith said he felt better with a local hospital taking charge rather than a hospital the county has never worked with. The vote passed 4-1, with Nance voting against. The Cabell County Board of Education meets the first and third Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m.

The First State Bank goes ‘pink’ in recognition of breast cancer It is estimated by the American Cancer Society that this year alone in America more than 230,000 women and 2,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The heartbreak of this disease will touch far too many friends, family, and loved ones. In response, The First State Bank is proud to announce that it will be going pink in October to recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Community members may join The First State Bank and show support for the cause by visiting the bank and donating a dollar to post a pink ribbon cardboard cutout, enter the pink goodie basket giveaway, or make a donation for The First State

Bank’s pie in the face contest. All proceeds will go toward breast cancer awareness. The First State Bank will also be washing customer car windows and giving out pink sweet treats every Thursday throughout the month. The First State Bank will also continue to offer its Pink Visa® Card, which honors and benefits breast cancer awareness and research. The card allows customers to show their support for breast cancer awareness, and with every qualified application, $10 will be donated to breast cancer research. “This is just one example of how The First State Bank supports important causes in our community,” said The First State

Bank President, Sam Vallandingham. “Breast cancer awareness is something that our employees were very enthused about promoting. They took complete ownership in organizing all the activities that are taking place in our branches this month.” The First State Bank, locallyowned and operated for more than 100 years, is based in Barboursville with additional branch locations in downtown Huntington and Teays Valley. To find out more about The First State Bank’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities, or find out how you can help support this tremendous cause, please call 304736-5271 or visit fsb-wv.com.

Casie McGee and Sarah Adkins marry at the Cabell courthouse shortly after the legalization of same-sex marriage.

Marriage From Page 1 new forms printed and ready to go.” Deputy Clerk Supervisor Terri Hazlett said the department met that morning to ensure they were prepared for any same-sex marriage license applications. “We’ve talked about it since the lawsuits were filed so we knew it was coming,” she said. “It was just a matter of when. So far, it seems to be working. Everything’s went really well and really smooth.” Hazlett said the change was not difficult overall. A simple change in software was all that was needed. “The vendor just had to go in and switch out the categories so we can pick what parties are on the form,” she said. “We’ve haven’t had one problem.” Hazlett also said the change has affected all marriage licenses. Now the bottom inscription reads that marriage is a “union between a man and a woman or two people” instead of just “union between a man and a woman.” She also said that while as of

Oct. 10 there had been only 10 licenses requested so far, the department had been told to expect an increase in the coming weeks. Although West Virginia is generally thought of as a socially conservative state, Dunn said this decision is helping to set a new standard of tolerance for all West Virginians. “I feel like with us accepting marriage equality as a state as quickly as we have, it sets a new precedent for the state,” he said. “It makes me proud to be a West Virginian. There is always going to be opposition and different opinions but that’s what makes this country great- getting to express that.” Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, who has the authority to direct the clerks to begin accepting same-sex licenses, also recognized that many would be opposed to the change, urging West Virginians to continue to take care of one another in a statement. “Our state is known for its kindness and hospitality to residents and visitors alike,” he said. “I encourage all West Virginians regardless of their personal beliefs - to uphold our statewide tradition of treating one another with dignity and respect.”

Football From Page 1 that I didn’t get to play with my team so I had to come out with some enthusiasm. Midland’s Jacob Hendricks took off on a 49-yard touchdown run to put the Knights up 14-7 with 7:41 to go in the second quarter. Then on the first offensive play after Midland forced the Capital offense to turn the ball over on downs, running back Alex Childers put it on the turf with 5:43 to go in the second quarter. “A game like this, whoever has the most turnovers usually wins, Pettit said from just outside the locker room filled with dejected faces. “That’s the way the game went tonight. The Cougars quickly pounced on the golden opportunity after the turnover. Haley struck again on first-and-goal, tying the game at 14 all with 4:37 remaining in the first half. Then Cabell Midland fullback Caperton Humphrey fumbled as the steady rain continued to fall, at some points much heavier than others. Haley made the Knights pay again on the ensuing drive, sprinting down the sidelines from 45-yards out to give the Cougars a 21-14 lead. “We had our chances, Humphrey said. “We just didn’t make the plays. It came down to execution at the end. Now we just have to bounce back. Midland attempted a field goal from the 19-yard line just before halftime, but it was blocked and the Cougars took a 21-14 lead into the break. On the second Capital possession after halftime, junior quarterback Tyrhee Pratt, who has already secured a scholarship offer from West Virginia University, put the ball on the turf with 7:33 remaining in the third, giving Midland new life. The Knights quickly moved the ball downfield and Alex Childers capped the drive with an 11-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 21 with 5:29 to go in the third. Childers led Midland with 200 yards and one touchdown on 26

her dish to win originally, but decided to let Obama pick once she confirmed her appearance. Cook gave the recipe to a chef at the White House where Obama chose it as the winner. “I thought it was the greatest thing ever, said Food Services Director Rhonda McCoy. “She had some tough competition. That just made us feel really good. We just think it brought to light what we really were doing. McCoy was originally contacted by the West Virginia Office of Child Nutrition, who then submitted Cabell County into the running for the Chew’s contest. Cook said she thinks the spaghetti won because of how it took something everybody knows and just made it a bit healthier. “I think it’s because it’s so healthy but is still tasty, Cook said. “Spaghetti is just versatile. “It has fresh ingredients in it, McCoy said. “We also use whole grain pasta, which we’ve been using for years. We’ve been using the recipe for a couple years now and they like it. It has a wonderful flavor. Anytime we have a red sauce for a recipe this is what we use. We just change the spices. The sauce uses butternut squash, red peppers, carrots, onions and zucchini, most of which is provided by Cabell’s farm to table program. Despite containing so many vegetables, McCoy said she doesn’t count it as a serving of vegetables; rather, vegetables and the salad bar are still served with the spaghetti. “That’s probably what makes us unique: that we’re making a

spaghetti sauce in such a way that has all those vegetables in there, she said, adding that nutrition did not mean an absence of taste. “We make sure recipes we have are meals students like, taste good and have nutritional value. McCoy and her staff have been creating new child-friendly recipes for the three years. She said members of her cafeteria staff volunteered to be a part of a committee who works on recipes together. Now that they have a large number of new recipes, they have been spending time training other cafeteria staff’s from around the state. McCoy said she was proud of Cook’s performance on the show, adding that it was a great representation of her overall staff. “I thought she was absolutely wonderful, McCoy said. “We have an amazing staff. I think we have a staff that is really concerned about child nutrition. We want students to eat and we want them to be healthy. And we want this to spread to their homes. Our staff is dedicated to making that happen. Cook said she received a standing ovation from her students at Barboursville Elementary the first time she walked into the cafeteria after the show aired, which blew her away even more than the compliments she had received from the first lady. “It’s a great idea, Obama told Cook while on the Chew. “This looks like spaghetti. They never need to know there’s butternut squash in there. It’s a great ideavery innovative. To watch clips from the Chew, visit ABC.com.

Pettit completed 5 of 13 passes for 112 yards. “Some plays went their way and some didn’t go our way, Pettit said. “That’s just the way the game is. On the ensuing Capital drive Pratt found receiver Tyrell Davis after tossing the ball up for grabs on the run. Davis made a great leaping grab, bounced off two Midland defenders and waltzed into the end zone putting the Cougars up 28-21 with 3:31 to go in the third. Late in the fourth quarter, Pettit launched a 75-yard touchdown pass to Hendricks to tie the game up at 28 with 2:30 left. At that point, it looked like overtime was a real possibility, but the jubilation was short lived. Haley did not go quietly, tormenting the Knights defense one last time, as he broke loose on a 58-yard run which eventually set up a Tyrell Davis 31-yard touchdown scamper around the left end with 1:36 remaining, putting the

Cougars ahead by seven. “That’s a good team [Midland] right there, Haley said as the rain drops descended upon his pink skullcap. “Hopefully, I’ll see these guys again. They stay strong. They stay in the weight room. Hopefully we get all of our playoff games at home at Laidley Field. Pettit made one last desperation effort by launching a long pass downfield, but it was batted down in Capital territory by none other than Haley at the 15-yard line. The Cougars had sealed the victory 35-28. “That’s two good teams right there, said Cabell Midland head coach Luke Salmons. “There’s nothing to be ashamed of, they [Capital] have good players and our kids fought. We made some mistakes early and then they made some mistakes. It was a good high school football game and I’m proud of our kids. Midland (6-1) travels to George Washington (4-2) Friday night.

The Cabell Standard

Cabell Midland comes up short at Nitro in MSAC By Zach Cumberland zach@theputnamstandard.com The Cabell Midland boys soccer team, coming off a big 4-0 victory at Hurricane, rolled into Nitro riding a wave of confidence. The only problem? Nitro’s Seth Jordan was waiting on them in the fifth-place game of the Mountain State Athletic Conference on Oct. 9. Jordan scored three of Nitro’s five goals on the night to lead the Wildcats to a 5-0 victory, leaving the Knights searching for answers on the defensive end. “They [Nitro] just wanted it more,” said Cabell Midland coach Tyler Ellis. “I love my guys. I love them to death, but there just didn’t seem to be any fire today.” Jordan opened the scoring for Nitro at the 31:17 mark of the first half when he took a lateral pass and found the back of the net putting the Wildcats up 1-0. Shortly afterward, Midland continued to misfire every which way. “Seth Jordan is a good player,” said Midland senior John Kuhn. “We were having trouble keeping on him.” Midland’s Ben Foster had a breakaway opportunity at the 28-minute mark, but could not get the ball past the goalkeeper from a bad side angle. Then a foul on the Wildcats gave Midland another opportunity with a free kick, but

Kuhn bent one wide right and the ball went untouched. “We put stuff together, but we wouldn’t finish it,” Kuhn said. “That was our big problem tonight, I think.” After Midland goalkeeper Alex Bock made one of his three saves to thwart another Jordan scoring attempt, a foul on Nitro resulted in a free kick for Kuhn, but this time it went wide left instead of right. The Knights couldn’t capitalize, and Nitro took a 1-0 lead into the break. The second half was all Nitro, as Jordan continued his stellar play and showed off a vast array of skills. Jordan opened the second half scoring when he put the ball past Bock after the Knights turned it over in front of their own net, making the score 2-0. “I think after the early goal we didn’t have as much [intensity],” Kuhn said. “Especially after the second goal.” The Knights continued to misfire on scoring chances in the second half when Zach Mitchell blasted a free kick toward the net and Ian Waddell tried to deflect it in, but the Knights still came up empty handed. “We need to have more intensity,” Kuhn said. “It comes and goes in our games.” Jordan scored once again to complete his hat trick with 6:23 remaining in the contest, salting

The Knights fell to Nitro 5-0 in the MSAC game. away the victory for the Wildcats and shutting the door on any Midland hope. “I’m happy for them [Nitro],” Ellis said. “There was just one guy we couldn’t do much against.” Dylan Cavender and Dominic Fazzolari each added goals in the waning minutes to finalize Nitro’s lead at 5-0. Fazzolari’s came with

only 38.2 seconds remaining. “Today, five goals is no good, but overall I’m happy,” Ellis said. “Out of 15 teams they took fifth place and we took sixth, so I’m happy with the overall result. We both did pretty well. “There was just a fire under their [Nitro’s] rear end the whole time. We didn’t have it tonight.”
