Welcome to Paranoid . In this day and age of chemtrails, gun grabbing, un-manned aerial drones, police check points, TSA groping, GMO foods, presidential executive orders, slippery politicians and a growing fear of World War III, who isn’t Paranoid? At least a little. After watching the world NOT come to an end in 2012 and viewing a healthy dose of doom and gloom being passed out by cable news media and Hollywood like hotcakes in a baker’s barn, it just made sense to publish this colorful fear-mongering reader. But, is it fear-mongering? No, we will leave that to the big guys at Faux News, MSNBS, and Cable Noise Network. They are so good at it anyways; but we will attempt to point out their bullshit every chance we get here at Paranoid Magazine. While there are plenty of other publications that are free lying around our fair city, ask yourself, “Why did I pick up this magazine? Was it the art on the cover or maybe just the name?” This little note is simply to clarify for readers that we are in the business of Truth Mongering, not the opposite as our fair name would suggest. Paranoia looms, not in the form of towel headed Islamic extremists in caves near the Kundar River of Pakistan, but in the halls of Congress and on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Homeland: Guns, guns, guns! While the naysayer media zealots have their way with school shootings and the crazy boogie men lone gunmen, most sleeping Americans are unaware of the real purpose of the 2nd amendment, or why it is being demonized. It is our gun-toting constitutional right to keep and bear arms should we once again find our nation under threat of tyranny or invasion by a foreign army or domestic coup.

Now I’m no Bubba, but I do have a hand gun or two. Taking our guns would be a bad move in this writer’s opinion, and guns are what scare the holy hell out of dictators. The first thing a dictator does is disarm its citizens, and often his biggest threat is that of his own people.

It is the “Bubba’s” of this land that dissuade NATO, law makers and the architects of the New World Order from achieving their goal of global domination. The American Revolution was won by farmers and ranchers and landowners, the Bubba’s of their day. Without them, I do believe it would be tea time at 5pm and we’d all be eating scones served with jam.

“Paranoia looms, not in the form of towel headed Islamic extremists in caves near the Kundar River of Pakistan, but in the halls of Congress and on Pennsylvania Avenue.”

Look at me, I’m ranting when I am supposed to be giving you an introduction to this weird publication. Nonetheless, won’t you embark with us on this monthly written work as we explore the depths of REAL fear and fright in our attempt or keep you informed as the war of deception is waged around our society? Take a deep breath, you are about to enter the some-time-not-so ridiculous emotion . . . known only as PARANOIA! - J.Black paranoidpublisher@gmail.com

For the most powerful intelligence officer in the land to resign in disgrace, you’re going to need more than a case of marital infidelity. But if your goal is to sweep it under the rug by the end of the week’s news cycle, nothing works better than a juicy sex scandal. As was the case of the short lived tenure of General David Petraeus as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. The highly decorated veteran of multiple theaters of battle was a person of interest in the public’s eye long before the scandal broke involving an affair with biographer Paula Broadwell. He presided over the controversial military “surge” in Iraq, and preceded General Stanley McChrystal in the counterinsurgency campaign in Afghanistan. He was feared by his enemies, and respected by his subordiPage 6 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

nates. Through his endeavors, Paula Broadwell was there to document his exploits and enjoy unparalleled access to the general previously unknown to other civilian journalists. One of the most intriguing aspects of Petraeus’ military tactics was his reliance on USfriendly warlords to supplement his resources on the ground, a tactic that relies heavily on human intelligence, trust-building, and making strange bedfellows. This policy was used long before Petraeus, and continues to be used by the CIA and the Defense Dept since his departure. It’s a throwback to the days of funding of the Afghan mujahideen in the 70’s in order to undermine the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. However, fast foreword to today’s middle east, and you can see the same policies at work. Case in point, the entire “Arab Spring.” Heralded as a Trojan horse of Arabic democracy, it is in reality an extension of the same cold war era clandestine warfare that pits entrenched dictators against US-funded militant fundamentalist groups wreaking havoc on whatever chosen society the militaryindustrial complex looks to destabilize. Back then it was the Soviet Empire.

Now it’s the center of the Muslim world, Egypt, Syria, etc. Who is the man behind organizing and spreading these military tactics from the mountains of Afghanistan, all the way across the Persian Gulf, to the doorstep of Jerusalem? General David Petraeus. His style of warfare is the very essence of Neo-Conservative thought: Clandestine war, multiple theaters, preserving American preeminence, and molding public opinion to suit the will of the hyper-national elite. Yes, Petraeus probably could’ve sealed for himself quite a legacy, on a par with Eisenhower, Patton, and McArthur. However, one important piece on the grand chessboard was overlooked by Petraeus; Israel. In 2010, Petraeus was quoted saying that Israel was more of a “liability than an asset” to our strategic goals. As a military tactician, Petraeus was astutely aware of the demographic dilemma facing Israel, a Jewish state surrounded and greatly outnumbered by its Arab neighbors. Our close relationship to it caused, in his mind, a military challenge for the United States, even from the very simple standpoint of public relations.

These observations did not digest well with the very powerful Israeli lobby. With the political fallout due to his comment, a very rare glimpse into a case of competing interests was revealed. Petraeus was in pursuit of American military hegemony, and in some very influential people’s minds, to the detriment of Israel’s interests.

out of it, avoiding a drawn out foreign policy flap, not having to reveal the weight wielded by the Israel-firsters, would be the most expedient way. It’s not old news, or new. It’s everyday news. Using distraction, sensationalism, and the old “bait and switch” works so well for making inconvenient explanations unnecessary.

From the Israeli’s view, an American strategy of arming Islamic fundamentalists in countries bordering it’s south and north would create serious problems. And Petraeus, the foremost proponent of those policies, was a problem that needed to be dealt with. The way it was dealt with was very clever, a sex scandal. Taking the politics

In 2010, Petraeus was quoted saying that Israel was more of a “liability than an asset” to our strategic goals.

So it is up to us to decide. Can a four star general and director of the CIA be sent into early retirement over an extramarital affair uncovered by a low level FBI agent who magically gained access to the general’s email account? If so, enjoy the tabloids in line at the grocery store. The rest of us have some serious things to ponder. How can any interest group who works on behalf of a foreign state gain so much influence that it can replace a CIA director it doesn’t like? I can remember going to see Grand Funk Railroad at the Joe Freidman Coliseum in 1972. That was a day when you could drive from Austin to San Antonio and maybe see one highway patrol car on I -35. And the trooper was probably helping an elderly woman change a flat tire. In those days your heart didn’t start beating with fear of being pulled over by the police. Today, in every jury selection I participate in, people tell me that they get fearful when a cop is driving behind them. And these are honest, law abiding, everyday citizens who are showing up for jury duty. And how much more the odds of getting stopped if you’re a black or brown citizen? Or a white dude with the wrong bumper sticker on display, like “Question Authority”?

day by your government. And yes they are reading every word I write and watching the magazines that publish these anti-government comments.

One of my favorite songs by GFR was Paranoid which began with the following lyrics:

Probably the biggest lie that we are being told today is that the increased security measures are to protect us from terrorists - the boogie man come to life in our generation. But since September 11, 2001, how much damage have terrorist organizations done to us on American soil? Think about it. What are the odds of a group of Muslim fanatics taking over commercial planes today and crashing them into buildings? I would estimate about zero percent chance of that happening again. But watch who is being searched and groped by TSA when you are flying from Austin to Dallas. Grandma and Baby Boop are usually the ones being taken over to the processing table to have their diaper bags swabbed. Unreal!

“D id

you ever have that feeling in your life , that someone was watching you ? H e don ` t have no reason , that ` s right . B ut , still he ` s there watching you . S omeone is waiting just outside the door , to take you away . E verybody knows just what he ` s there for ; to take you away .”

If I could have looked into the future that night and seen what is happening today with our federal, state and local law enforcement agents, I would have thought that my weed was spiked. But today you would have to be totally stoned to miss the damage being done to our basic civil rights and the increasing encroachment on our Constitutional Rights. And, by the way, you are being watched and listened to each and every

One of the most troubling aspects of the increased monitoring of the United States citizenry is that no one complains or resists this bullying (or failure to defend us) by our elected officials. If we don’t stand up to our own elected officials on these issues, who will? If you won’t bring up this topic with your family and friends, who will? I continually remind people that once we allow our rights to be abridged or limited we don’t get them back without extreme damage being done to our fellow citizens. Except usually we just don’t get those rights back, we just lose them.

And why is our government recording every single phone conversation that is made and storing them for future review? Oh yeah, in case there is another terrorist attack they can make

a criminal case against the guys that blow themselves up. I can understand the need for a criminal investigation but why are they recording your phone calls? Why are they recording your mom and dad’s phone calls? I don’t have an answer for you though I have looked for one. When we the people are being kept in the dark about what our country is doing, for our own protection, there is something wrong in America.

“probably the biggest lie that we are being told today is that the increased security measures are to protect us from terrorists - the boogey man come to life in our generation. But since September 11, 2001, how much damage have terrorist organizations done to us on American soil?” When I was a police officer in the ‘80’s I didn’t make traffic stops based on racial profiling. I actually saw a traffic violation before making a traffic stop. And I made stops that were for safety purposes, not for defective license plate lights or mud on a rear license plate. Why do they stop us for driving 75 mph in a 70 mph zone along with all the other vehicles. Why can they drive 100 mph to catch up to us for driving 63mph in a 60 mph zone?

And worse, the courts allow and even promote this attitude by almost always supporting the police position when they review cases up on appeal. If you want to lose your lunch try reading the appellate decisions that control our lives sometimes. The legal reasoning is often just void or a charade to support a political position. And then ask yourselves why our judges running for election are allowed to accept (solicit) contributions from interested parties. I don’t like the fact that we have drones flying over San Antonio for national security purposes. Just what is it that a drone can see that our local police officers can’t see? And how many of you have searched the internet for information on this issue? Or how many of you have initiated a conversation at lunch with your coworkers about this happening? Very few is my predicted answer to these questions. Believe you me, questioning your government and holding it accountable is our civic duty, a duty we have failed miserably for a long time. It is time to do our duty and do it full bore and with a patriot’s pride. I have been told that the extra security

and surveillance is because the “Cartels” have moved into our country. Yet we invite them here by continuing our antiquated prohibition policy of enforcing cannabis laws which keeps the illegal marijuana trade profitable. The money that the Cartels gain from the importation of weed account for 60 percent of their profits. We could cut their profits in half overnight by ending the cannabis prohibition. And there is more weed available now than was at that GFR concert. We have more drugs in our country than ever before and we are spending money faster than is imaginable fighting the War on Drugs. A war and we lost before we started it and one that should be ended now. It amazes me that we put people in jail, house them at great expense and ruin their future employment opportunities over a plant that grows naturally all over our country. We hurt our farmers by denying them the opportunity to grow hemp for clothing, commercial and other legitimate purposes. We deny ourselves the ability to tax, regulate and control cannabis - keeping it out of the hands of juveniles like we do with alcohol. We put non-violent citizens in

prison with the most violent of criminal which condemns them to sexual abuse or recruitment into the prison gangs. I wonder what our politicians would do if faced with the option of anal rape or joining a prison gang. We all know the answer to that question don’t we? Of course, there are some things even criminal gang members won’t do that our politicians would quickly participate in.

Alien People? Dear Heidi: Thank you for creating your site. I have a question, if you have the time. Briefly: I came to realize almost 14 years ago that at least some of the ‘people’ I know are actually alien life forms in human form. An acquaintance hugged me, and her belly was very cold. Other individuals began what seemed to be a wearing down process, whereby they either revealed their grotesque face to me, or they spoke in threatening tones. I became petrified and for most of the past 14 years have

Page 10 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

had low self esteem issues. This resulted in me being quite socially disabled most of the time, because I have not known who might be alien and who is human. These aliens seem to read minds as well, considering their behavioral responses to me. My question is: Do you know how many unpleasant aliens in human form there might be on Earth? That is, how likely is it that there are a lot of them and how many of us are human? I might like to be able to tell who is alien, and who is human, particularly now that I might like to make some new friendships. I am moving away from the fear these alien contacts have created, but I am, overall, still very afraid at times. I want to get on

with a happy life, and probably move out into the world again. I used to be friendly and happy, but have often been almost crippled by anxiety during the past 14 or so years.

my question is: Do you know how many unpleasant aliens in human form there might be on Earth? Thank you for your time in reading this, Heidi. Best wishes, Kristy

Dear Kristy: First off, hello over there in Australia! I lived there for a bit in Melbourne and miss it tons—but back to your dilemma: Alien People Living Among Us! Believe it or not Kristy, yes, there are indeed reported incidences of these strange sorts living among us. Some have been so unsuspicious as actually being an alien that I’ve heard of stories of people chatting it up with some at a bar while sipping on some brew. It was only when the ‘alien people’ walked out of the bar and revealed their spaceship, that the onlookers had any clue! Had that happened to me, I’d think someone slipped some painkillers into my drink! I mean, I’ve seen some wild things in my life, but being waved back at from a drunken bar patron as he flutters off in a UFO isn’t one of them! Either way, alien beings are indeed around us—cold bellies and all—though I’d never heard of that one before. Sometimes there exist freaky people, too, so no need to go around blaming aliens for being the only oddballs out there!

What you describe as being near paranoia of those around you not being real people, is a concern. For anyone to change who they are or how they live their life due to fear of the mere possibility of someone being an alien is disabling indeed. The questions you might want to ask yourself to help get over these issues are: Have any of these ‘beings’ hurt me? Will they hurt me? Does my worrying about it help anything? I think it’s key to know that our worries are sometimes bigger than we think. Many have actually seen some big, old nasty aliens, but I haven’t heard of any humans hiding in hopes the aliens don’t spot them out. Sometimes taking that step where you put all of what you are and suspect to exist in the world on the table really helps chill out our fears and build up our strength—even getting other’s perspectives. Aliens exist, Bigfoot stomps around in the woods and vampires are making a comeback (uh—only on film—that is)—but none of it means any of us have to take it lying down.

"I’ve seen some wild things in my life, but being waved back at from a drunken bar patron as he Flutters off in a UFO isn’t one of them!" HeIDI Page 11 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

Dennis G. Balthaser’s review of area 51 by annie jacobsen

I very seldom comment in writing

about books I’ve read, although I have done so several times pertaining to TV documentaries, in which I have questioned the information being presented. After reading many reviews about Annie Jacobsen’s book “Area 51” (Little Brown and Company, 2011, ISBN978-0-316-13294-7) I had no intentions of reading it, however when I started hearing about the information she presented pertaining to the 1947 Roswell Incident, I

the information presented about Area 51 to be of interest, and for the purpose of this editorial, I will concentrate mostly on Ms Jacobsen’s comments about the Roswell Incident. I only read to the second paragraph of the PROLOGUE on page xi before red flags started popping up for me. In the last sentence of that paragraph she stated, “The U.S. government has never admitted it, (Area 51) exists.” As a matter of fact every year since President Clinton was in office, and including President George W. Bush, the President has issued a Presidential Determination stating Groom Lake (Area 51) is exempted from environmental laws, due to National Security issues. I have not yet located such a document issued by the current President. On page 16, she states, “Three hours after Haut dropped off the statement the commander of the Roswell Air Field sent Walter Haut (left) back to KGFL radio station with a second press release stating the first press release had been incorrect.” General Ramey in Ft Worth issued the second press release stating it was a weather balloon, which was headlined in the Los Angeles Herald Examiner evening edition July 8th and most newspapers east of Chicago the following day (July 9, 1947).

decided to read it for myself. After all, Roswell has been my main area of research for the past 20 years, so I’m always interested in others views on that subject. I have also lectured and written about Area 51, so both topics are very much of interest to me. I found most of

ferred to small pieces of debris, and never mentioned any of the equipment Jacobsen refers to. On page 37 she stated there was “Russian writing, block letters from the Cyrillic alphabet that had been stamped, or embossed, in a ring running around the inside of the craft.” Would Major Marcel, the top intelligence officer in the world at the time, not been able to recognize Russian writing, which both Major Marcel (right) and his son Jesse Jr. later described as resembling hieroglyphic type symbols. Again on page 37 Jacobsen states, “the weather balloon story has remained the official cover story ever since.” The weather balloon story was General Ramey’s rebuttal July 9th, less than 24 hours after Walter Haut’s press release hit the news wires. In 1994 the Air Force issued “The Roswell Report, Fact vs Fiction in the New Mexico Desert” report, stating it wasn’t a weather balloon, but rather a Mogul balloon. 3 years later the Air Force issued another report entitled, “Case Closed” stating the bodies seen by the witnesses were anthropomorphic crash test dummies.

On page 36, she claims the Joint Chiefs of Staff took command and recovered from the crashed Roswell craft, the airframe, some propulsion equipment, including the crashed craft’s power plant. Every witness that ever handled or saw the debris scattered over the Foster ranch rePage 15 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

On page 38 she refers to the Roswell Army Airfield being 45 miles to the southwest of a facility called Sandia Base near Albuquerque New Mexico. The shortest driving distance from Roswell to Albuquerque is 198 miles. Even using a straightline distance it would exceed 120 miles. A 150-mile error is of no importance when other facts about Roswell apparently weren’t verified either. She comments on page 44 that the crash remains from Roswell were shipped from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base 4 years later, (1951) to a secret facility out in the middle of the Nevada desert. In 1947 before the Air Force and Army separated the base in Dayton Ohio was known as Wright Field, and more importantly the secret base in the Nevada desert wasn’t opened until 1955 for the CIA to test the U-2 aircraft. She does later in the book confirm the name change of the Air Force base at Dayton Ohio. Later on page 367, she suggests that, Area 51 is named as such not because it was a randomly chosen quadrant, as has often been presumed, but because the 1947 crash remains from Roswell, New Mexico, were sent from WrightPatterson Air Force Base out to a secret spot in the Nevada desert – in 1951. All other areas of the Nevada Test and Training Range are also designated by numbers, so are they numerical numbers for identification purposes, or numbered to Page 16 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

represent some historical event as Jacobsen claims? On page 151 talking about the runway needed at Area 51 for test flying the A-12 (later named the SR-71), she states that, “the 8,500foot long runway, designated 14/32 is believed to be the longest in the world.” The runway here in Roswell (above) where the 509th Atomic bomb group was stationed in 1947 has a runway that is 13,000feet long. A quick search of the Internet reveals pages of runways that vary in length from 13,000 feet up to the Qmado Bangda airport in China at 18,045 feet. On page 211 she says, “In his position as CIA director Hillenkoetter knew that the flying disc at Roswell had been sent by Joseph Stalin. If, in fact, Russia had such a craft, why was it never used in any other conflicts the Russians were involved in?

debris. Debris is hardly an intact craft that could be taken apart. It was already apart from the crash. On page 375, Jacobsen refers to, “America’s first postwar nuclear test begins as a mysterious Army-Navy assignment in a “sand-swept town--Roswell.” The first atomic bomb test took place at White Sands Missile Range, (Trinity Site), 100 miles west of Roswell near Alamogordo, NM, in 1945, later in the Pacific Ocean, and the 509th atomic bomb wing didn’t arrive in Roswell until after the atomic bombs had been dropped on Japan to end WWII. Although I found some of the book interesting in reference to the information Ms Jacobsen referenced relating to Area 51, it’s obvious to me, and many others who have devoted many years to researching the Roswell Incident that she didn’t do the research required to make the statements she made. The book would have been much more informative had she stayed with the subject in the title of the book (Area 51), and avoided embarrassing herself with some of the outlandish claims she penned about Roswell.

On page 370 she refers to Vannevar Bush referring to reverse engineer the craft by stating he said, “Take it apart and put it back together again.” Take what apart? The only thing found on the Foster ranch was a field ¾ of a mile long and several hundred feet wide, filled with Dennis G. Balthaser

There are a few alternative explanations for the alien abduction phenomenon, the most prevalent being that the experience does not involve actual aliens at all but is instead a complex, human-driven tool used for purposes of mind control. It is said that the alien abduction syndrome is actually a cover story intended to conceal something even more disturbing than aliens, that being an encroachment on the very souls of those chosen to be victims of government and military experiments that seek to control the workings of the human brain itself for purposes of psychological warfare and for intelligence operations requiring a “zombie” type agent who has no idea he is carrying out a covert mission at all. This idea is not exactly new. It entered into the pop culture zeitgeist as early as the 1962 thriller “The Manchurian Candidate,” in which a team of soldiers fighting the Korean War are brainwashed by their Chinese captors into various heinous acts, with one victim in particular charged to assassinate a

Page 18 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

candidate for president. The assassin is merely responding to posthypnotic suggestion as he goes through the motions of his role in some dark political intrigue indeed. But a lot has happened since, and Timothy Green Beckley of Global Communications has recently released two new books that deal with the subject from a decidedly 21st century perspective, including the fascinating overlap between mind control technology and alien abduction. The new release

“Nightmare Alley: Fearsome Tales Of Alien Abduction”

begins with capsule histories of some of the better-known abduction cases, such as the 1961 Betty and Barney Hill encounter that became a kind of template for the thousands of cases that came later. The cases in the book were compiled by Beckley, his editorial and art consultant William Kern, and B.J. Booth, a researcher known for his website www.ufocasebook. com. The team has gathered cases that stretch from the Hills to Betty Andreasson Luca on to the 2004 Francis Family abduction and the Clayton and Donna Lee event of 2005. As an easily digestible overview of the abduction phenomenon, it has few peers in the field.

But in the later sections of the book, the alien factor is moved to a backburner and the all-too-human quest for control of the individual’s mind is given an excellent scholarly and detailed treatment by researcher and writer Martin Cannon. Cannon begins by attempting to shine a light on what alien abduction is said to be. “Among ufologists,” Cannon writes, “the term ‘abduction’ has come to refer to an infinitely confounding experience, or matrix of experiences, shared by a dizzying number of individuals, who claim that travelers from the stars have scooped them out of their beds, or snatched them from their cars, and subjected them to interrogations, quasi-medical examinations, and ‘instruction’ periods.” He goes on to say that these sessions are said to occur within alien spacecraft and include terrifying details “reminiscent of the tortures inflicted in Germany’s death camps.” The abductees often, though not always, lose all memory of these events, and find themselves back in their beds or cars unable to account for “missing time.” Hypnosis or some other trigger can bring back these “haunted hours” in an explosion of recollection, and the abductee often begins to recall a history of similar experiences stretching all the way back to childhood. Cannon also expresses amazement that abductees, in spite of their vividlyrecalled agonies, claim to “love” their alien tormentors. Cannon quickly shifts gears and begins to offer his own theories about the abduction phenomenon. “I posit that the abductees have been abducted,” he writes. “Yet they are also spewing fantasy – or, more precisely, they have been

given a set of lies to repeat and believe. If my hypothesis proves true, then we must accept the following: The kidnapping is real. The fear is real. The pain is real. The instruction is real. But the little grey men from Zeti Reticuli are not real; they are constructs, Halloween masks meant to disguise the real faces of the controllers. The abductors may not be visitors from Beyond; rather, they may be a symptom of the carcinoma which blackens our body politic. The fault lies not in our stars, but in ourselves.” There is substantial evidence, according to Cannon, that links members of this country’s intelligence community, to include the CIA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Office of Naval Intelligence, with “the esoteric technology of mind control.” “For decades,” Cannon continues, “‘spy-chiatrists’ working mostly behind the scenes – on college campuses, in CIA-sponsored institutes, and (most heinously) in prisons – have experimented with erasure of memory, hypnotic resistance to torture, truth serums, post-hypnotic suggestion, rapid induction of hypnosis, electronic stimulation of the brain, non-iodizing radiation, microwave induction of intra-cerebral ‘voices,’ and a host of even more disturbing technologies. Some of the projects exploring these areas were ARTICHOKE, BLUEBIRD, PANDORA, MKDELTA, MKSEARCH and the infamous MKULTRA.” Cannon said his research includes reading nearly every available book on the subject, as well as all the relevant congressional testimony, plus spending much time in university libraries reading relevant articles. He also conducted numerous interviews and was allowed to see the files of John Marks, the author

of “The Search For ‘The Manchurian Candidate,’” which included some 20,000 pages of CIA and Defense Department documents, interviews, scientific articles, letters, etc. Cannon has certainly done his homework, which leads him to conclude that striking advances have been made in the field of brainwashing despite false and perjured claims made before Congress that these efforts had met with little success and had been discontinued. He also restates his belief that UFO abduction may be a continuation of clandestine mind control operations.

The next section of Cannon’s report is a fascinating overview of the known technology so far and introduces the reader to the term “wavies,” or people who claim to be victims of clandestine bombardment with non-ionizing radiation, or microwaves. “They report sudden changes in psychological states, alteration of sleep patterns, intra-cerebral voices and other sounds, and physiological effects. Are these troubled individuals seeking an exterior rationale for their mental problems? Maybe. Indeed, I’m sure that such is the case in many instances. But the fact is that the literature on the behavioral effects of microwaves, extra-low-frequencies and ultra-sonics is such that we cannot blithely dismiss all such claims.” Page 19 • www.paranoidmagazine.com Page 19 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

When did this research really begin? Cannon says that in the early years of the 20th century, Nikola Tesla seems to have stumbled upon certain of the behavioral effects of electromagnetic exposure, and Cannon also cites a report from the 1930s in which two scientists claimed to be able to electrically stimulate the human nervous system by remote control. Meanwhile, who knows what has been achieved over the last few decades or what is the current state-of-the-art in mind control technology? Cannon returns to his basic thesis, writing, “The abduction enigma contains within it sub-mysteries that slide into the mind control scenario with surprising ease, even elegance. As we have seen, the MKULTRA thesis explains the reports of abductee intra-cerebral implants (particularly reports involving nosebleeds), unusual scars, ‘telepathic’ communication (i.e., externally induced intra-cerebral voices) concurrent with or following the abduction, allegations that some abductees hear unusual sound effects, haywire electronic devices in abductee homes, personality shifts, ‘training films,’ manipulation of religious imagery, and missing time. Needless to say, the thesis of clandestine government experimentation readily accounts for abductee claims of human beings ‘working’ with the aliens, and for the government harassment that plays so prominent a role in certain abductee reports.” Another new release from Global Communications, “Mind Stalkers: Mind Control Of The Masses,” covers some similar ground. The authors, Commander X and Tim R. Swartz, also offer some interesting history of what is known about mind control technology as well as some scientific background on how Page 20 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

the various devices actually work. Chapters on secret experiments with drugs, subliminal seduction, electronics, microwaves, implants and “mind machines” in general are stuffed with frightening information on the potential enslavement of the human mind to those who can covertly manipulate it. The drive to create a “super soldier” quickly devolves into the search for an iron grip on mass consciousness that has been sought by every totalitarian leader throughout human history, only now such a nightmarish possibility may be terrifyingly within reach, with the mere flick of an “on switch.” Swartz and Commander X also tackle the thorny subject of human mind control as the true origin of UFO abduction. “UFO literature is filled with hundreds of cases,” the two authors write, “in which observers have been subjected to continuous harassments following an encounter with a UFO. Some witnesses report strange, ghost-like phenomena in their homes. In other cases, weird, mechanical-sounding voices, purported to be ‘messages’ from extraterrestrials, begin emanating from their phones, radios and televisions.” The authors point out that scant research has been done into this view of the phenomenon, and investigators are loathe to touch the subject, believing that the witnesses who complain of such harassment are most likely mentally ill. It is a kind of Catch-22 that victims must suffer through: after a prolonged period of skilled mismanagement of their brains, they are hardly credible witnesses who can coherently PROVE their stories. But the authors say that cases of UFO mind control are almost always identical.

“The eyewitness goes through a period of anxiety,” the authors explain, “during which he is unable to consciously remember certain aspects of the incident. Within months, the personality of the observer actually changes. Eventually, it may change to the point where he finds it impossible to get along with coworkers, friends or even family. Personal tragedy seems to strike many of those who have had UFO experiences.” The person may also develop certain “gifts” or abilities, such as powers of ESP, precognition or psycho-kinesis, as well as a heightened intelligence level or an unusual increase in physical strength. These abilities may manifest themselves shortly before a person is about to be controlled. Soon he may begin slipping into a kind of trance, and it will appear an alien intelligence has taken over his body and is using his brain. But nevertheless, we could still be dealing with human “controllers,” the authors insist, as they cite the research of Dr. Helmut Lammer, who recounts the stories of how some UFO abductees have been kidnapped by military personnel and taken to hospitals and/or military facilities, some of which are described as being underground. “Especially disconcerting is the fact that abductees recall seeing military intelligence personnel together with alien beings,” Commander X and Swartz write, “working side by side in these secret facilities. Researchers in the field of mind control suggest that these cases are evidence that the whole UFO abduction phenomenon is staged by the intelligence community as a cover for their illegal experiments.”

“Especially disconcerting is the fact that abductees recall seeing military intelligence personnel together with alien beings,” Commander X and Swartz write, “working side by side in these secret facilities. Researchers in the field of mind control suggest that these cases are evidence that the whole UFO abduction phenomenon is staged by the intelligence community as a cover for their illegal experiments.” The authors go on to say that Lammer’s research suggests that abductees are often harassed by dark, unmarked helicopters that fly around their houses. The mysterious helicopter activity goes back to the late 1960s and early 1970s, when they showed an apparent interest in animal mutilations, but not, at the time, in alleged UFO abductees. Still, UFO researcher Raymond Fowler reported some helicopter activity in connection with UFO witnesses during the 1970s, so the phenomenon is not without an earlier precedent. (Meanwhile, the idea that the black helicopters are sent to “spy” on UFO witnesses is called absurd by Martin Cannon, who says if the military were seeking information on abductees they would certainly go about it in a much more subtle manner. The late abduction researcher Budd Hopkins once similarly stated that if the intelligence community wanted to spy on abductees, they could probably stand two blocks away and point a cufflink at their intended targets, so far advanced was their espionage technology. In any case, the true mission of the black helicopters remains unknown.) Abductee Debbie Jordan reported in her book “Abducted!” that

she was at one point kidnapped, drugged and taken to a kind of military hospital where she was examined by a medical doctor. This doctor told her he was going to remove a “bug” from her ear and proceeded to take out an implant that resembled a BB. Also, some of author Katharina Wilson’s experiences are reminiscent of reported mind control experiments. She writes of a flashback from her childhood in which she remembers being forced into what appeared to be a Skinner Box that may have been used for behavior modification purposes. In some military abduction cases military doctors searched for implants and sometimes even implanted the abductee with what may have been a manmade implant. “Mind Stalkers” also includes an “Index Of Secret Mind Control Projects” that provides a quick rundown of the often confusing military codenames and the “alphabet soup” by which some of the various programs came to be called. So if you’re interested in this particular approach to alien abduction or want to read the accounts of others who may share your “paranoia” about such things, then you’re definitely the right sort of reader for “Nightmare Alley” and “Mind Stalkers.” To reiterate, it is an interesting irony that what makes the whole complex of the abduction mystery so sinister and shocking is not the presence of aliens from another planet but the dark machinations of a completely human enemy of mankind – which may be our own government and military.

“In some military abduction cases military doctors searched for implants and sometimes even implanted the abductee with what may have been a manmade implant.”

TAKE THIS HAARP AND SHOVE IT! BY TIM R SWARTZ

bulge, to distant locations on the Earth’s surface.

Officially, HAARP is a research station directed by the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space Vehicles Directorate in Gokona, Alaska, that opened in 1992 to gather data about the atmosphere and “radio propagation conditions.” Their web site (www.haarp.alaska. edu) states that they are monitoring and archiving the naturally occurring variations with the sun’s activities such as sunspots and solar flares. HAARP constitutes a system of powerful antennas capable of creating “controlled local modifications of the ionosphere.” However, there seems to be much more going on behind HAARP’s public face. THE IDEA FOR HAARP BASED ON TESLA TECHNOLOGY HAARP is based on physicist Bernard J. Eastlund’s Page 22 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

U.S. Patent from 1987 titled “Method and Apparatus for Altering a Region in the Earth’s Atmosphere, Ionosphere, and/or Magnetosphere” (US #4,686,605). Eastlund’s patent is based, in part, on the works of Nikola Tesla, who first suggested that RF could transmit approximately one watt per cubic centimeter to any point on the planet without the use of wires. Thus, power can be generated on the ground and then sent through the air to the upper areas of the atmosphere miles above the surface of the planet. Eastlund explained in his patent application that by influencing the ionosphere, methods of communication disruption, missile shielding and weather modification are possible. His second patent described the reflection of a second signal, using a previously “heated” ionospheric

Eastlund had been working with the Atlantic Richfield Company, holders of a massive reserve of natural gas under Alaska’s North Slope. ARCO bought Eastlund’s first two patents with the understanding that this new technology would make it possible for their natural gas reserves, too expensive to be piped from Alaska, to be converted to electrical energy on the north slope, and then bounced off the heated ionosphere to customers in remote locations around the globe. Because Eastlund’s “heaters” could elevate the Earth’s ionosphere, his discovery provided the ability to control weather by altering upper atmosphere wind patterns. This is done by focusing high frequency radio transmissions on the ionosphere, lifting and heating it in localized areas which then alters wind patterns and ultimately weather conditions. Unfortunately, the military had purchased Eastlund’s two patents from ARCO and had given them to Raytheon, a military contractor. So there would be no civilian use for this new technology. cont . . . page 24

WHAT HAARP COULD BE USED FOR Today, HAARP has 48 antennas that can broadcast up to 960 kW of power, and plans to expand to 180 antennas and 3.6 megawatts of power by 2016. Even that is short of the thousands of antennas and hundreds of megawatts of power that Eastlund figures would be needed to control the weather or act as an effective missile shield. However, even at 3.6 megawatts, significant weather control experiments could be performed. In fact, radio operators who routinely monitor HAARP transmissions have noted an increase in RF output from the station right before hurricanes Katrina and Rita grew into dangerous storms. Though there is no proof that the ferocity of these recent hurricanes are the result of climatic tampering by the HAARP administration, Phillips Geophysics Lab, which is a partner in the HAARP project, contemplates the triggering of storms and hurricanes for military use in a course for military personnel at MD’s Hanscom Air Force Base, on weather modification techniques. Even if the HAARP program is experimenting with weather control, ground-based weather control could soon be surpassed by theoretical solar powered satellite-based systems with a possible power output of 1,000 megawatts. NASA, and the European Space Agency has been researching the possibility of such satellites being used as an energy source, transmitting

power to Earth with concentrated beams of microwaves. With a fleet of these powerful satellites using the same RF principals used by HAARP, it is conceivable that the weather over any geographic location could be modified at will.

THE ALASKAN DEATH RAY It has been alleged that the HAARP facility, located near Gokona, Alaska, is not the “real” HAARP project, and that the actual HAARP is conducting experiments that seem beyond the realm of possibility. Writer Dan Eden, of the Viewzone website, recently revealed that in 1998 he was shown a secret HAARP facility near Fairbanks, Alaska. Eden was invited to come to Alaska by two men, Dave and Jonas, who had been recently discharged from the Navy. Eden was taken by his hosts to a small Alaskan town called Fox. From there they took snowmobiles east along the Chatinaka River where they encountered military “Restricted Area” signs. From the vantage point on top of a ridge, Eden was shown an enormous area below them that was covered with rows and rows of metal poles - antennae and small silver rectangular sheds where black cables originated. The entire area was at least a mile square and the number of antennae must have been in the thousands. Eden was told that this was a phased array, and that this was a type of antenna where the signal being sent out could be focused to a very narrow

beam - like a laser - and that it was capable of emitting a signal that was billions of watts in power. At one point Eden questioned why an antenna system would be buried between such high ridges. “Wouldn’t that interfere with the signal?” “Not if you’re sending it straight up,” he was told. They explained that this energy was used to heat a layer of the atmosphere, to cause it to bend and thicken, and that it would then be ready for the “death ray.”

“In fact, radio operators who routinely monitor HAARP transmissions have noted an increase in RF output from the station right before hurricanes Katrina and Rita grew into dangerous storms.” Eastlund’s discovery had been taken by the military during the cold war era because it allowed microwave signals to be sent and received beyond the horizon. This fact alone allowed them to prevent its development in any humane or commercial application since it would then be available to enemy nations. But once the heater had created a sort of lens in the ionosphere, you did not have to limit your signal to radar or microwaves. Eastlund had developed the ability to send massive bursts of power - in the billions of watts range - and these could now be zapped to just about any point on the Earth.

“Here. Look at the ultraviolet and radiation that came through right after they did it. They blew away the shield and all the radiation just came right down and zapped Earth. And look. It lasted for a long time!” Eden asked if anyone had been hurt by these tests. The answer chilled him to his bones.

“HAARP in Gakona, about 300 miles south of here, that’s a fake decoy for the public. Everyone knows about that,” Dave told Eden. “They even have a web site with one of those instant cam things and a few dozen antennae. That’s just a thing for show so they can say that it’s all harmless and open.” The two men explained that they had worked at the secret HAARP, Dave was in the ‘com’- the command center of the heater. He worked with the primary transmitter or generator. Jonas said that he mainly worked on the feeder lines on the antenna farm. The two were both there when they “bumped the power up to the max and let it blow,” from thousands of watts to billions. “They never used that much power before so they just did it to see what would happen,” Jonas said. “And when they did, it kind of multiplied the power and then a huge chunk of Earth’s atmosphere blew away, out into space. Jonas pulled another graph from the box.

“Shit, yes! Here in Alaska there were Eskimos that were all fried and like whole herds of antelopes. But the holes also moved west and did their real harm in Siberia. But it isn’t just the people it killed. It made these people and animals sick from the radiation that came from the Sun - the stuff that’s usually blocked by the atmosphere - and so there have been still births and cancers and mutations. They are trying to keep it all real hushed. It’s insane. And the worst part is that they are going to use it again!”

STRANGE WEATHER Several years later, in 1999, Dan Eden received emails from a reader in Serbia, where the UN forces had been fighting Melosovich, mostly with American armed forces and equipment. The

e-mails mentioned a strange phenomenon that accompanied attacks by the U.S. A-10, “warthog” fighter jet. It was reported that, just prior to an air attack, the sky often filled with huge black clouds that would materialized out of nowhere, and stayed until the end of the campaign -- which was usually a couple of weeks. However, instead of rain falling on Belgrade, there were hailstones the size of eggs.

“they never used that much power before so they just did it to see what would happen,” Jonas said. “And when they did, it kind of multiplied the power and then a huge chunk of earth’s atmosphere blew away, out into space.

“You can still see the marks it left on houses.” During that time, witnesses described strange “lightning” in the sky that lasted for hours which didn’t look like anything anybody had ever seen before. The “thunder” that accompanied the strange “lightning” was equally strange. It was hundreds of times stronger than any thunder anybody ever remembered. It was so loud that it was even louder then the sound of bomb explosions. As well, scientists in Serbia released a report that stated that the electromagnetic field over Serbia was punctured. The “hole” was almost the size of Serbia itself and it started at the border, between Kosovo and Albania in the south, and ended near the Yugoslav and Hungarian border in the north. There are also reports of bizarre weather over Iraq during the U.S. invasion in 2004. It seems obvious that HAARP is being used to manipulate the weather all over the planet. The Washington Post reported that a growing number of physicists and others in the scientific community are becoming increasingly worried. A “small group of American physicists, some of whom have aired complaints in scientific journals, fear HAARP may not simply be the simple research experiment that advocates describe, but possibly phase one of a secret U.S. military program that could be seeking ways to blow other countries’ spacecraft out of the sky or disrupt Page 26 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

communications over large portions of the planet.” Richard Williams, a physicist and consultant to the David Sarnoff laboratory in Princeton alleges HAARP constitutes “an irresponsible act of global vandalism.” He and others fear a secret second stage where HAARP would “beam much more energy into the ionosphere. That could produce a severe disruption of the upper atmosphere at one location that may produce effects that spread rapidly around the Earth for years.” Documents acquired from the Office of Naval Research via the Freedom Of Information Act reveal a more ominous purpose for HAARP. According to these documents, the U.S. military believes the former Soviet Union has similar heaters with which they claim to have achieved higher levels of ionospheric reaction than possible so far in the “West”.

“Although smaller in size than the secret HAARP project, there are many other ground based transmitting heaters in operation around the world; tromso, Norway and Arecibo, Puerto Rico among them.” Michel Chossudovsky, professor of economics at the University of Ottawa and Director of the Center for Research

on Globalization, says that: “There are very clear statements by the U.S. Air Force to the effect that weather modification technology is available, HAARP is fully operational and could be used in actually military situations. It is clear that weather warfare does constitute an instrument of the Air Force, they even identify the scenarios of its use.” Can these heaters already be changing the weather, and have they somehow contributed to the recent climate-based catastrophes in the U.S? How many humans have contracted cancers and other sicknesses that might have remained dormant if not triggered by these transmissions? It is critical that this technology be closely monitored by independent scientific associations (it currently is not), and, if used, needs to be used in such a way as to be beneficial. It could be used to increase food supply, repair the ozone layer or reduce damage to civilian populations frequently affected by adverse weather conditions. Sadly, current military agendas appear not to give much weight to these possible beneficial uses of the technology. It is an instrument that is paid for by tax-payers’ dollars and is currently in the hands of people who have not earned or deserve our confidence and trust. Tim R Swartz

In April 1994, I got an assignment from The Nose magazine to do a piece on the first anniversary events commemorating the holocaust at Waco. My friend Richard Mosley had just finished producing a documentary, Day 51: The True Story of Waco. When I told him about my assignment, he suggested I not wait for the anniversary, but come to Waco a week early and meet the surviving Branch Davidians at a private screening of Day 51. So, one evening, I drove to Waco and the home of Dr. Dewey Millay, a doctor who had taken the Davidians under his wing following the destruction of their home. Several of

them were living in house trailers on his property. Dr. Millay was the first person Richard introduced me to when I drove up. We stood outside his house talking for a while. He told me how he had been under FBI surveillance for the previous year. “They used to sit in a van down the road,” he said, “just watching, 24 hours a day. I haven’t seen them there lately, but sometimes I’ll see them driving back and forth, or stopping by the gate to look in my mailbox. I used to get upset about it, but now I don’t care anymore.” He talked about the public’s misconceptions about the Davidians. Sev-

eral of them had been patients of his, and he had always known them to be good, honest, peaceful people—not the fiendish cultists described by the government and mainstream media. “They were good parents too,” he said. “People are always asking why wouldn’t they let their children go. Well, they did let some of the children go—and if people only knew what happened to those children, they wouldn’t wonder why the Davidians wouldn’t let more go.” He described how the children—already frightened to be away from their parents and in the hands of these government agents who had attacked their home—were herded by the BATF into a large room. Page 27 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

Each child was carrying a small bundle of clothes and one favorite toy. Also, on their shirts were pinned notes written by their mothers describing medical and other needs. The BATF agents would rip these notes from their shirts, wad them up, grab their bundles, and throw everything into one big pile in the center of the room—smashing the toys to pieces while the children watched. Clive Doyle stepped out of one of the trailers, and I was introduced to him. Doyle had assumed leadership of the Davidians following David Koresh’s death. He had lost several family members in the fire, and had himself been badly burned on the arms. He told me that the trauma of the experience had caused him to have gaps in his memory. In all, there were about a dozen Davidians there that night. They had a lot of stories to tell. One thing they talked about was their experience with ABC’s 20/20. They had all been interviewed by a woman reporter for the program, and had told her many things—how the government agents started the fire, how people were shot by snipers as they ran out the back of the building, and much more. The reporter was excited by these revelations. It was going to be a great segment, she said. She even called the Davidians the day before the broadcast to tell them to be sure to watch. They did, only to discover that all their exciting revelations had been edited out of the inter views. The reporter called them the Page 28 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

next day to apologize. She had been as surprised as they, she said. It had been her producer’s decision, not hers, to censor the segment.

when they raided Mt. Carmel, but rather, for information stored on a computer.

We gathered in Dr. Millay’s living room. I sat on the couch next to Sheila Martin, who had lost her husband and five children in the fire. Extra chairs were brought in, and the screening began. Day 51 opens with video footage of the tanks tearing up the building, known as Mt. Carmel Center, in the pre-dawn hours of April 19, 1993— systematically ventilating the building in preparation for the inferno to come. Then the film segues into interviews with the Davidians, as they describe the February 28 raid by the BATF that led to the siege—how the helicopters came that Sunday morning and began strafing the roof with gunfire, killing one elderly couple as they lay in bed. The most provocative interview in the film is with Wally Kennett, a Davidian who was away during the

It was well known among the Davidians that two of their number—Jeff Little and Wayne Martin (Sheila’s husband) —had been conducting an “investigation” into illegal government activities, and storing their findings on a computer. Kennett notes that the room the BATF agents were trying so desperately to enter when three of them were shot was the computer room. The gun shop was in an entirely different part of the building. (For that matter, most of the guns had been taken to Austin that morning to a gun show—a fact which the BATF acknowledges it was aware of when the raid was mounted.) Both Martin and Little were killed in the final assault on April 19, so it is not known exactly what kind of information they had gathered. Incidentally, I am interviewed in Day 51. This came about because I had heard an FBI spokesman label

Waco “another Jonestown,” and, since I knew Waco was not a mass suicide, my suspicions were aroused about Jonestown. So I did some research and discovered that Rev. Jim Jones had extensive CIA connections, and that Jonestown was a CIA mind control operation. Also, the evidence shows that most of the persons who died at Jonestown did not voluntarily partake of the cyanide-laced Kool-Aid. Most were either forcibly injected with cyanide or shot.

Wally told an interesting anecdote about Koresh: “One night after we had been up late talking, we went outside and David looked up in the sky and said, ‘Look. It’s the Merkabah.’ We couldn’t see it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he could. Or maybe he was just kidding.” The Merkabah figures prominently in Davidian theology. In Ezekial 1 and 10 it is described as the thronechariot of God. Many have interpreted it as a UFO.

I said goodbye, told everyone I So, yes, Waco was “another would see them the next week at the Jonestown”—though not in the sense first anniversary events, then left. As the FBI would have us believe. I pulled out of the driveway, I looked for a van parked by the road. LuckWhen I told Richard about this reily, I didn’t see one. Didn’t see the search, he asked me to describe it on Merkabah either. camera. That was my contribution to Day 51. The following Saturday I returned to Waco for an all-day event called Day 51 ends with a montage of “The Day of Information.” The press photos of all the Davidians who were and public had been invited to visit killed. Sheila, sitting beside me, the site of the fire and hear the facts dabbed tears from her eyes as the about Waco from the Davidians and photos of her children appeared on their supporters. the screen. I bought a commemoreminisced about David Koresh: rative gimme cap at the Davidians’ booth. “People say all kinds of things about him that aren’t true. They say he was Richard had set up a booth to probrainwashing us, they say he forced mote Day 51. It was fascinating, all those things we used On display in his booth was a scale to talk about. David inspired us. And model of Mt. Carmel he had built. he was a lot of fun.” (Richard is a man of many talents.) It had been used in the film to il-

lustrate various events during the siege. This model attracted a lot of attention. Later that day I noticed a young boy, who had lost several family members in the fire, staring solemnly at it for a long time. Not far away was the real Mt. Carmel, or what was left of it. It was a big pile of weed-grown rubble, surrounded by a tall cyclone fence, with two uniformed guards inside. Jack Boulware, the editor of The Nose, showed up. He had decided to expand the magazine’s Waco section and write his own piece in addition to mine. So he and his photographer had driven all the way from San Francisco for the event. Jack and I walked around the grounds for a while. We explored the small building which had been used by the FBI snipers. The windows had been knocked out and sandbags were piled against the walls. AntiDavidian obscenities were scrawled on the walls. As Jack and I were walking back to Richard’s booth, we heard a commotion. Everyone was looking and pointing towards the north. We turned, and saw three large Army helicopters flying low and circling the grounds. In a few minutes, they were gone. More people were arriving now. Some were carrying signs with antigun control and anti-ATF slogans. One read: “The Black Booted, Black Suited, Black Helmeted, MachineGun Totin’ ATF Gestapo Are Guilty of Killing Children and Holding Women Hostage.”

Page 29 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

There was a definite Texas theme to some of the signs, like the guy whose sandwich-board sign read “Remember the Alamo, Remember Mt. Carmel.” Another guy was strumming a guitar and singing (to the tune of “Davy Crockett”): “Davy, Davy Koresh,

was. I have forgotten his name, but not what he told me. He leaned closer, dropped his voice, and said, “You know, don’t you, that Koresh was working for the CIA?” “Really. What was he doing for the

He described Koresh and his top lieutenants as “sleeper” agents under CIA mind control who had been programmed to stage a sarin gas attack in Oklahoma City (similar to the attack staged a few years later in a Tokyo subway by the Aum Supreme Truth cult). However, according to Wilcher, Koresh and the others woke up from their programming, and refused to carry out the attack—thus necessitating their elimination and the destruction of the factory. Wilcher made these and other allegations in a long letter to Attorney General Janet Reno, then died under circumstances widely regarded as mysterious.

I hung around all day, sometimes listening to the speeches, but mostly talking to people. I met David Thibodeaux, who had been the drummer in Koresh’s rock band, and Bonnie Haldeman, Koresh’s youthful-looking mother.

“He was manufacturing biological weapons.”

At one point, I manned the Day 51 booth to give Richard a break, and while I was there, a man walked up and introduced himself as the minister of another Branch Davidian church in Waco. I didn’t know whether or not to believe him. Later, however, I learned there was indeed such a church, and he was who he said he Page 30 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

A few years later I heard this allegation again. In her Penthouse interview, Linda Thompson, producer of the documentary Waco: The Big Lie, said that there was a war going on between the CIA and FBI, and that the FBI, in alliance with the Mossad (Israel intelligence), had shut down Mt. Carmel, which was a CIA bio-weapons factory. A similar allegation was made by attorney Paul Wilcher, who conducted a private investigation into Waco. Wilcher claimed that sarin gas was being manufactured at Mt. Carmel.

Whether or not there was a bioweapons factory at Mt. Carmel is a question that may never be answered. It is, however, known that there was a methamphetamine factory on the premises at one time. According to the Davidians, this was under the leadership of George Roden. Roden left Waco in the 1980s after a power struggle with David Koresh. When Koresh took over, he and his followers destroyed the methamphetamine factory. They also found a large inventory of pornography, which they destroyed as well. Later, Roden was charged with the murder of his roommate, and found innocent by reason of insanity. He was confined to a mental institution in Big Springs, Texas, but a few years later, escaped and traveled to the Israeli embassy in New York. There, he sought an Israeli visa, claiming he was Jewish and had some kind of connection with the Israeli government. He further claimed that PLOtrained hit men were trying to kill him. Roden was denied a visa.

What if the part about his death being related to Waco is true? If so, it would suggest that maybe Martin and Little’s investigation involved Foster. Maybe they were Fifth Column operatives. These are just things I wonder about. I don’t have the answers. I also wonder about a story that circulated in Waco in the months after the fire. It was said that, during a campaign stop in Waco, Bill Clinton went to a barber shop. The barber was a Branch Davidian. No one knows what the barber and Clinton might have talked about, because the only other witnesses to this meeting were three Clinton bodyguards who were later killed in the raid on Mt. Carmel. In Waco: The Big Lie, these three can be seen on videotape entering the window of the computer room. As soon as they are all inside, the BATF agent left on the roof sprays the wall with gunfire, killing them with “friendly” fire. Perhaps it was a mistake, but it has a deliberate look to it. Again, these are just things I wonder about. I went back to Waco a few days later for the memorial service on April 19, the first anniversary of the fire. Whereas the Day of Information had been larger and somewhat festive, this was a smaller event, and quieter—and, whereas the previous event had happened on a sunny day, today the skies were overcast, which heightened the somber mood. Richard was there. He and I

watched the memorial service for a while, then wandered away to walk around the fenced-off ruins of Mt. Carmel and talk.

Then there was a rumbling in the east; it grew louder and louder. I looked up. No, it was not the Merkabah.

After a while, a bell began to toll. We knew what this meant. It was now the exact minute when the fire had broken out a year earlier. Richard wanted to be by himself just then, so he went behind the burnt-out shell of a bus that had been destroyed by the BATF.

It was an enormous military plane, flying so low it drowned out all other sounds. The memorial service was suspended for a few minutes until it passed. I remembered the Army helicopters the week before circling the grounds. Was the government sending us a message?

I stood on the other side of the bus, watching the ceremony in the distance. Here and there I saw American flags hung upside down—the symbol of a nation in distress. The bell kept tolling.

I drove back to Austin, uneasy, thinking about all I had seen and heard at Waco—all I had learned about possible hidden motives behind the government’s attack on Mt. Carmel, and all of it so difficult to prove—and came to the conclusion that, while it may be interesting to explore such theories, going down those rabbit holes is ultimately an exercise that obscures the larger, not-so-hidden agenda behind Waco, and its true meaning.

After a while, Richard rejoined me and we walked to the ceremony. I saw it was Bonnie Haldeman, Koresh’s mother, working the bell. On the speaker’s stand, Clive Doyle was reading the names of each person killed at Waco. With each name, the bell tolled. Then a surviving family member would come forward and pick up a small white cross, carry it up the hill towards the rubble, and hang it on the fence. Sheila Martin carried five crosses. This went on a long time, there were so many names, and it was so quiet, just the bell, the names being read, the sobbing of family members as they picked up their crosses, and the clicking of camera shutters by the press.

Waco set a precedent. Using “illegal” guns as the pretext (coupled with the vague “threat” presented by a group of “religious nuts”), Waco conditioned the American people to accept such illegal police intrusions as normal, and sent the message that Posse Comitatus and the Bill of Rights can and should be set aside for the “greater good” of keeping us safe. On the second anniversary of Waco, the bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal Building took place, killing a great many people and destroying Page 32 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

FBI and BATF files related to Waco. Later it became known that FBI and BATF agents were warned not to go into the office that day—a foreknowledge that has never been adequately explained. Timothy McVeigh was charged with the Oklahoma City bombing. At his trial, the defense played Richard’s film Day 51, in an effort to show the jury how this inflammatory piece of propaganda (which McVeigh watched over and over, we are told) drove him to insanity, causing him to stage the bombing. McVeigh was found guilty and executed. But McVeigh’s fate is not as important as the political effect of Oklahoma City … In the aftermath of the bombing, Congress quickly passed the AntiCrime and Terrorism Bill, which among other things greatly limited the Fourth Amendment. This bill also set the stage for the Patriot Act, passed by Congress several years later after the September 11 terror attacks. The Orwellian-named Patriot Act did even more damage to the Bill of Rights—damage that

has been further compounded by the recently-signed National Defense Authorization Act which renders habeas corpus null and void. And still more recently, following the school shooting at Newtown, Connecticut, President Obama signed 23 executive orders designed to curb “gun violence,” while also increasing the power of the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. Among other things, we can expect a broadening of the DHS citizen spy program (“if you see something, say something”), as well as an increase in funds for school security (i.e., surveillance systems and more police, making public schools even more like prisons than they already are).

It is an all-toofamiliar pattern: some terrible atrocity occurs, followed by repressive legislation

designed to “keep us safe,” but which ultimately leads to the destruction of freedom in America. And where did this trend start? At Waco … I remember that day at the memorial service twenty years ago, that somber day with the flags upside down— the tolling of the bell, the sobbing, the military presence in the sky. I couldn’t foresee the Oklahoma City bombing, of course—or September 11, or all the police state legislation to follow—but I sensed something: a change, a turning point. That day, I see now, was not only a memorial service for the Branch Davidians, but for America itself. - Mack White If you enjoyed this article by Mack White ,visit www.mackwhite.com/
