GRANT CAMERON AND THE UFO LEGACY OF THE PRESIDENTS By Sean Casteel

GRANT CAMERON AND THE UFO LEGACY OF THE PRESIDENTS

By Sean Casteel Canadian Grant Cameron has made a career out of seeking the publicly available truth of the presidents of the United States and their official UFO policy. The string of former American presidents runs its twisted way back to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and it seems that each of them in turn had to struggle with the notion of what to say publicly and what to enshroud in the dark secrecy still at play today. This article looks at the UFO policies of some of the more recent presidents.

KEEPING REAGAN QUIET

“Ronald Reagan was fascinated with the subject,” Cameron said. “He was fascinated with astrology; he was fascinated with all sorts of very esoteric things. Reagan was interested and he talked at great length about how he wanted to get rid of nuclear weapons and he talked about how the world must unite if faced with an alien threat.”

Page 6 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

One story that Cameron has gleaned in his research is about Reagan’s National Security Advisor, General Colin Powell. Powell told presidential biographer Lou Cannon that part of Powell’s job was to stop Reagan from talking about aliens. “Reagan was talking about them in cabinet meetings all the time,” Cameron said, “and that was part of Powell’s job, to stop him from doing this.” In 1987, Reagan made the famous address to the United Nations that has come to be called “The Little Green Man Speech.” Reagan not only prophesied that the world must unite against a future alien threat, he also asked casually, “And is not an alien presence already among us?” When Cameron visited Reagan’s presidential library he accidentally stumbled across material that indicated that Reagan’s references to creatures from another planet had initially been removed from the speech. “They pulled it from the speech,” Cameron said, “and Reagan writes to the speechwriter and says, ‘Oh, by the way, I’d like my little fantasy

of how the world will unite put back in the speech.’ So they put it back in the speech and he does it a number of times, which is something people don’t realize. He did it on at least five occasions. One was at a school in Maryland, where Reagan did the same sort of thing.” Reagan had a photographic memory, according to Cameron, so he spoke of the extraterrestrials in nearly the exact same words on those five occasions. The references are deleted from the speeches on file in the presidential library, which meant they were most likely “adlibbed” at the end of the speech. The former Russian president Mikhail Gorbachev was also given the alien pitch by Reagan. Gorbachev said in an interview that he met with Reagan in a small cabin where the Gipper talked about the alien invasion. Gorbachev told Reagan that he agreed with the basic premise but that Reagan’s concerns were a little premature. “Gorbachev was basically agreeing with the fact that aliens were here,” Cameron said, “but he really didn’t think the threat was as serious as

Reagan thought it was. “So it’s an interesting scenario of a guy who just kept putting it out there and putting it out there. It was sort of a utopian thing where I think he was using it to play off of nuclear weapons, saying that we shouldn’t be fighting between ourselves. That we’re one people, and if someday we were invaded, then we would all suddenly be one united world. Reagan had this utopian idea of how things should be.”

GEORGE BUSH WEIGHS IN ON THE UFO SECRET

The first George Bush is often labeled the president who likely knew it all. When Jimmy Carter won the 1976 election, Bush, as the then Director of the CIA, was charged with the task of briefing Carter during the transition period from the Ford administration on various intelligence matters. “I guess Carter asked for the UFO files,” Cameron said, “and Bush said, ‘No, I can’t give them to you. You don’t have the need to know. Even being president is not sufficient need to know. If you want to know about the UFO stuff, you have to

contact the House Committee on Science and Technology and get it through there.’” The story came to Cameron through Danny Sheehan, who was a Harvardeducated Civil Rights attorney based in Washington. Sheehan claimed to have heard it from Marcia Smith, who worked for the Congressional Research Office and had produced reports for Carter on UFOs and extraterrestrial intelligence. “So that was another story that indicated that Bush Senior had the knowledge,” Cameron said. In his time as president, the elder Bush met with Mikhail Gorbachev. One of the subjects they discussed was the recent failure of a Russian satellite called Phobos Two, which had made the journey to Mars and was sending back photos and information. The satellite had picked up a huge elliptical object in its sites and then immediately went blank and essentially disappeared. “A Russian cosmonaut, who went public with this, stated that Gorbachev and Bush had discussed this in Malta. It was one of the conversations they had, as to what had happened to the Phobos Two satellite.

UFO LEGACY OF THE U.S. PRESIDENTS By Sean Casteel So from time to time, things have come up that indicate that international leaders do discuss this kind of thing.” Bush is always considered a major player because of his intelligence background and is a trusted insider with the Skull and Bones credentials in his favor. According to Cameron, if one were to name a present day list of members of the latest incarnation of MJ-12, Bush would definitely be on that list of people with a controlling interest in the UFO game.

CLINTON’S MASSIVE FILES You may already have heard of Bill Clinton’s admission that he sought the UFO secret – specifically on Roswell – but was denied access to the hidden truth despite his continued efforts as president. But surprisingly, Cameron was able to find thousands of pages on the subject in Clinton’s presidential library and got some good responses to his FOIA requests. “I have about a hundred FOIA requests,” Cameron said. “I have the one file that hasn’t been released yet which is 2,500 pages of UFO material. I got a thousand pages from the Clinton administration when he was still in office.” Those numbers are significant because of the paucity of material generally available at presidential libraries. Cameron’s visits to the Eisenhower and Truman libraries, which contain upwards of 60 or 70 million pages, yielded only an average of 10 UFO-related documents. “I thought this was very strange,”

Cameron said. “This is the most important subject in the world, a president is the most powerful guy in the world, and it doesn’t make any sense that the most powerful guy in the world doesn’t deal with the most important subject. Why are there no documents in the presidential libraries? That includes the Reagan Library. Ford has quite a bit but it’s mostly from his Congressional days when he was making a big thing about UFOs. Even in Carter’s, there’s very little there. Nothing official. “And so the importance with Clinton is, if you get a thousand pages, this is more than all the other presidential libraries combined. There’s all sorts of material there, like Area 51, files on that. There’s a lot of material at the Clinton Library. I think I’ve got 29,000 pages under review based on all my FOIA requests. And the key to that is, because I got a thousand pages in 2000, from Clinton, through the Office of Science and Technology Policy, where they were keeping all this material, I know who was involved. We know all the people in the Clinton administration who were involved in this, and so what we do now is file for all their papers. It mushrooms. So Clinton really did try to get it and came up against a brick wall.” Hillary Clinton is also known to have a background in UFOs, probably more than any previous American politician, according to Cameron. “She’s very much into esoteric stuff,” Cameron said. “but you’d never get to talk to her about it

because it’s absolutely the end of your career as a politician to start taking about that. And Dennis Kucinich is a prime example. His presidential bid was over the minute he was faced with a UFO question in a national debate. So the Clintons are very interested, have been very much involved, all their people were involved. Bill Clinton has openly stated that he tried to find out about the alien at Area 51. The rumored story was that there was an alien underground there and he says quite openly, it’s on videotape, that he tried to get that answer as to whether there was an alien at Area 51, but nothing really came of it. “I doubt the documents are going to show him getting anywhere with it, but that’s the Clinton story. It’s by far the longest story on my website. It’s 60 or 70 pages, and I have a lot more material that’s never been put up there.”

BUSH AND CHENEY AND UFOs The junior Bush was confronted about UFOs on a couple of occasions, and in both instances referred the question to Dick Cheney. Cheney had been the Chief of Staff for Gerald Ford, Secretary of Defense under the first George Bush, and was then the junior Bush’s Vice President. “Cheney has always been the guy,” Cameron said. “He’s almost like George Bush Senior or Henry Kissinger; he’s one of the guys who we think really knows what’s going on.” Cameron was able to question Cheney himself once during Cheney’s appearance on a Washington call-in radio show. “I asked him, ‘Mr. Cheney, in all your jobs in government, have you ever been briefed on the subject of UFOs? And if so, when was it and what were you told?’ The idea of that question was: I don’t care if you’ve seen one and I really don’t care what you think about them. What I want to know is, did someone walk into your office and brief you? Did an official who knows what’s going on read you the briefing of what, to their best knowledge, U.S. intelligence is on the subject?” Cheney replied by saying that if he had been briefed on the subject, it would probably be classified and he therefore wouldn’t be talking about it. “Which just floored me,” Cameron said, “because he basically said, yes, this is for real. He didn’t laugh it off and he didn’t walk away. Then the host went after him after what he said and asked, ‘Well, Mr. Vice President, have you had any meetings on UFOs

since you’ve gotten to the White House?’ By then, Cheney had caught his footing and he said, ‘No, I’ve had no UFO meetings since I got to the White House.’ Which of course is probably true. This was April, just a couple of months after they’d got in. “But Cheney is the guy who knows. Bush did make some jokes about it. He was in Roswell at one point and he made a joke about a UFO. He would have some general knowledge, but I don’t think he really has any interest in it, which is the same as the general populace and a lot of politicians.”

BARACK OBAMA SIDESTEPS THE ISSUE After Stephen Bassett’s 2007 UFO conference in Washington, Barack Obama’s campaign manager was asked about ending the UFO Truth Embargo. The answer came back, “We’re more interested in ending the embargo of information on the war in Iraq.” “That’s how he handled it,” Cameron said. “Later, Obama was confronted by a Chicago reporter. It’s on You Tube. A Chicago reporter asked, ‘Mr. Obama, if you get into the White House and you find out that aliens are for real, will you release it?’ And Obama uses the same old technique that all politicians use: they make a joke out of it, to walk around it. He said, ‘It depends on what they’re like. Whether they’re Democrats or Republicans.’ That’s how he answered the question. “Obama, as I stated long before he got elected, is simply not interested in this. It’s not his thing. He’s the type of guy who in the late 1960s would have said it’s a total waste of money putting a man on the moon when there are poor people on Earth. He’s going to shut down a vast majority of NASA. He’s not interested in outer space, as many times as he’s claimed he is. He’s interested in earthly problems, which is fine. Poor people, health care, education, all these kinds of typical Democratic issues. He’s a good politician, and that’s what people have to realize. People think that somebody comes along, that they’re the Messiah and that they’re going to give you all the things you’re wishing for. They are politicians. They’re there to get elected. “So I was not surprised that Obama didn’t do anything. It’s just not his issue. I guess if push comes to shove and there’s a crash and he’s faced with this issue and has to deal with it, he’s a good politician and he may be the guy who can actually

walk us through the thing and bring it out without having the thing blow up.” Beyond those circumstances, the normal tendency is to push responsibility onto someone else. “Put it on somebody else’s watch,” Cameron said. “This is not something he wants to be involved in. Because that’s the end of your presidency. The minute you get involved with this, you’re going to take all the fallout. Disclosure has way more bad things going for it than it does good things.”

WHAT WOULD DISCLOSURE REALLY BE LIKE? “I don’t think there’s any way to do it,” Cameron said, “without everything falling apart. It’s not exactly ‘The War of the Worlds’ or the stock market crashing. The problem with politicians, with government, is that they only want things that are predictable. And this is the most unpredictable thing, because once you let it out . . . “I looked at Jimmy Carter, a guy who’s taught Sunday School since he was 18-years-old and always says he’s going to tell the truth. He’s going to be honest, to be upfront with people. He always seemed to be an honest-type guy. And I said to myself, ‘How did they turn this guy?’ The guy was into UFOs and he wanted to release it. He gets to be president and suddenly he turns, he becomes one of them. What did they tell him to convince him to be quiet?

PULLED OVER IN TRAFFIC by Jamie Balagia and Adam Crawshaw at the Law Offices of Jamie Balagia sober appearing parking and things can start to turn your way. You have very little control over when the officer turns on the video recorder but you control everything you do while on the screen once it starts recording. So we start with good driving and a great traffic stop with all turn signals being used and a safe stop. That puts you in the drivers seat in court, so to speak.

Pulled over in Traffic. What to Do & NOT to do. by Jamie “the Dude” Balagia and Adam Crawshaw

Everyday hundreds of thousands of us drive up and down the roads in and between Austin and San Antonio, Texas. Due to the lack of effective public transportation in Texas - we drive! The vast majority of the time when we drive we don’t have any problems. We make it to work, we make it to the store, we make it to school, we take care of business and then we make it back home. Nothing during our daily trips makes us suspicious, shady, or turns us into criminals. However, at some point in every driver’s life will come a police encounter on the side of the road. And you better be ready for when that happens! Now let’s say you are going down the road, in traffic, on the way home and you see a police car behind you and then the lights come on. What do you do? And maybe more importantly what do you not do? When we first see the police lights most of us probably think the lights are for someone else. Supposing the lights are not meant for us, we usually slow down and pull over to the right lane as the emergency vehicle goes by. However, what do

Page 8 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

you do when the vehicle in the review mirror turns on the lights for you? If a video tape player is working in the patrol car then as soon as the taping begins you are the main event. Your performance will be shown to a jury if you are arrested and have the guts to take your case to trial. Once you realize a police officer is behind you - take steps to assure that you pay attention to the way you are driving. Do not stare at the rear view mirror trying to see what the officer is doing. He (or she) is either going to stop you or he isn’t but if you haven’t given them a reason then continue to drive properly. One old cop saying is “if you want to stop someone for traffic just follow them for a few miles and they will screw up sooner or later.” As a former police officer I can tell you that is about as true as it gets for traffic stops. And remember that there are a few officers that will make up a traffic violation just to “justify” their traffic stop. And some officers have the traffic laws so mixed up that they pull people over and write tickets for violations that don’t exist. One point I want to make is that there is a great difference between a video with poor driving opposed to one with great driving. Many officers testify about the horrible driving they witnessed and how many objects you “almost” hit with your car (another way to say you didn’t hit anything). Then the jury sees a video with great driving facts and you making a safe vehicle stop with turn signals and

Before the officer gets out of his patrol car he will radio in your license plate and the location of the stop. Everything you are doing in your car is being video taped. If you are reaching under your seat or pulling something in your console the officer will probably see you (he is trained to observe you) and the video will certainly record it. Just as it will record all the “correct” things that you are doing. Sitting still in your seat, hands on the steering wheel might be a good idea and roll your window down before the officer gets there. For some of you it would be a good idea to keep the windows rolled down the whole time you’re driving to let out certain odors. Especially if you just left some place or activity that involved the cremation of certain plant substances. Once the officer gets next to your door all of his senses will be concentrating on you, your vehicle and the environment that you are in. He will have his eyes, ears, nose and sense of touch at full attention. If you make any quick movements the officer will perceive danger. If you make too slow of movements the officer will think you are impaired/drunk/stoned. He will look at your eyes for redness, smell your vehicle and your clothes for pot or alcohol and listen to everything coming from you or your vehicle. This doesn’t sound too cool at this point so stay tuned as it can quickly get worse - usually depending on the cop that pulled you over. I have seen both sides of the criminal justice system and I have seen the best and worst in police officer behavior both as a cop and as a criminal defense attorney.

The officers are taught to ask you to perform some task (produce your automobile insurance card) and then start asking you questions while you are attempting to complete the task. If you stop looking for the insurance card and pay attention to the officer then he will say you couldn’t concentrate on a simple request while being distracted. I say that when you are trying to be polite and show the officer respect you stop doing the task and give him your full attention. You may want to ask the officer whether he wants you to do the task or show respect and look at him when he is talking. Or you may just finish what you’re doing and then ask him to repeat his other request. Just remember that a jury could be judging you on how you handle this “divided attention testing” so prepare a plan ahead of time. You might not remember having to learn any of this stuff when you took the driver’s education class. I personally think that it should be included so that we can all learn how to handle ourselves during a traffic stop (especially our teenagers). Remember that proper planning prevents piss poor performance! Always have a game plan on what to do if you get pulled over and definitely what to do if you get arrested. It is very difficult to slowly and carefully think through what to do in this stressful situation so be smart and always plan ahead. Read dwidude. com and 420dude.com for great tips. There are certain questions the officers asks that you may feel the need to answer or feel that you have no choice but to answer. According to Texas case law if you are stopped for traffic you can be arrested and taken to jail for all traffic offenses except Speeding and Open Container. Since this can invoke you being given an “attitude test” you always want to avoid purposefully disrespecting the officer. But most law enforcement officers will

always write a traffic ticket and allow you to sign the ticket and release you. When you sign that ticket you are promising to appear at the court announcement by the date listed on the ticket. You are not entering a guilty plea when you sign the ticket but are only promising to take care of the accusation listed on the ticket. I know you have heard of the right to remain silent but that Miranda Right doesn’t begin until you get arrested. I need you to remember to stay quiet unless you absolutely have to say something. You really don’t have to answer any questions but many of you feel uncomfortable muting yourselves in the presence of an officer. I can tell you that more arrests occur because of what people say than because of what they didn’t say. What is even more disturbing is what my clients say while in the back of a patrol car, under arrest, handcuffed and being video tape recorded. It is hard to win a case when you are in the back of a patrol car confessing to the very criminal accusation you are under arrest for. So don’t do that! Keep quiet and let me be your mouthpiece, your advocate and your legal counselor. The officer will ask you many questions that are not related to the reason you were stopped for. If I get stopped, I usually don’t answer any questions that don’t pertain to the ticket. I politely tell the officer that I have to be somewhere else and need to finish up and leave. If I am polite then he needs to be polite since he is also being video taped. I also know to say “I don’t mean to be rude but that information is none of your business”. I say that to the Border Checkpoints every time I go through them and of course I make it a point to never possess any illegal substances.

You should also make sure your passengers aren’t holding something illegal if you are going through a checkpoint since the driver is considered to be in the care, custody, control of the vehicle and everything in it. I also like to keep a copy of my insurance where I can find it quickly after asking the officer permission to open the console to get it for him. Or get it out before he approaches your door. Know where your drivers license is or make a photocopy and attach it to your insurance papers in your unlocked console or glove box. I may sound paranoid but I always assume that I am going to get pulled over by the cops. Guess what - every time I do get stopped I have all my stuff right where I put it and the cops don’t get all upset waiting for me to find it. If I want to lock anything in my car I make sure that my insurance papers are in an unlocked location. That way there is no reason to ever unlock my other areas

Page 9 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

and expose them to a quick search by a prying officer or his backup. Always remember that once you have signed your ticket or warning ticket you are free to leave, period! I can’t tell you how many times I have watched a video where the officer wrote a ticket and after it was signed and given to my client the officer starts up a new conversation and an arrest results. Once the ticket is handed to you it is okay to leave and answer any further questioning by telling the officer goodbye. They are trained to start asking if you have drugs or weapons on you and if you start answering him then you have opened up the proverbial “can of worms”. Even if you are clean he is going to call a drug dog unit or start searching your car. If you aren’t clean then never agree to a search or to wait for the drug dog. It always blows me away when I watch a video and the client should be driving away but instead is saying, “Yes sir, you can search me and my car” (and they’re holding). Take your ticket, say adios and then roll on down the highway because it’s time for “Hasta La Vista, Baby!” Minor things are important to keep in mind before driving after drinking or if you have warrants. Warrants are better handled without the police being involved and you should never drive drunk

since that is screaming out for an arrest. Make sure all the lights on your vehicle are working, make sure your vehicle is operating properly so you don’t break down on the highway, have proof of your valid insurance and a good drivers license. You should know where you are going and how to get there and back to where you are going so you don’t get lost. Have some “burn” cash on you in case you need to get a hotel room if you’re not up to finishing the trip. Clean out your car/truck before going out to party since nothing draws attention like a couple of hundred empty beer cans in the floorboard or truck bed. Do I really need to add that ashtrays shouldn’t be full of blunts, roaches, sticks, stems and seeds? And do not beg the officer to let you go home, it never works and is embarrassing on video. This year I published the Texas DWI Survival Guide and have copies available to those of you that call my offices and request one. I love seeing my fellow citizens educating themselves on the law and how to react to police encounters. I am more than happy to give this book to the callers for free to show my appreciation. There is some great information in the book and you need to learn it and share it with your family and friends. Please keep talking to your friends, family, co-workers and neighbors about ending the War on Drugs and the danger of our increasing Police State. Lastly, Adam Crawshaw from my San Antonio office says I’m a little rough with my suggestions and came up with some good advise that you can memorize and follow while not pissing off any police officers. THE “BE POLITE” RULES TO BE FOLLOWED WHILE YOU POLITELY DECLINE THE OFFICERS REQUESTS:

1) When pulled over always be polite, courteous, and helpful. Yes sir, no sir, and “my insurance is in the glove box, sir” go a long way.

2) Do not talk incessantly simply because you are nervous. 3) Stick to the information on your documents. This means politely refuse to provide information that is not on your driver’s license, registration sticker, or insurance card. If there is other information that the officer wants to know simply ask him, POLITELY, if you are free to leave. 4) If the officer asks you out of the car you must comply. Being jerked out of the car is never a good option. 5) If the officer wants to search your vehicle politely decline. Again, ask him if you are free to leave. If an Officer has probable cause to search your vehicle he does not need your permission. 6) If the officer asks you to perform field sobriety tests, politely decline then ask if you are free to leave. Many officers will tell you they are going to have you do the field sobriety test. Remember, this is optional. YOU DO HAVE AN OPTION. YOU CAN REFUSE. 7) Once the officer starts questioning you or asking you to perform field sobriety tests nothing good will usually result. 8) If you are arrested, do not speak. Each and

everything you say or do that is unnecessary will be construed against you. 9) Remember, you are not being disrespectful to law enforcement. You are asserting your rights. 10) DO NOT CONSENT TO HAVE YOUR VEHICLE SEARCHED. DO NOT CONSENT TO A BREATH TEST OR BLOOD DRAW. POLITELY DECLINE. So what’s the moral of the story? Sadly, doing as an officer says does not mean he will let you go despite what he may say. To protect yourself and your good name make sure you politely decline to provide information not included on your driver’s license, registration sticker, or insurance card. And make sure you and your friends have my contact information saved to your cell phones for our quick response in an emergency. The Strange Disappearance of Ashley, Kansas by Jay Abazi

CREEPY STORIES By Jay Abazi Disappearance of Ashley, Kansas”

On the night of August 8th, 1952, at 7:13pm, a resident of Ashley, Kansas reported a strange sight in the sky. With no law enforcement in the town itself, a call was made to the neighboring town of Hays. The Ashley resident, Gabriel Johnathan, reported to police that he saw what appeared to be “a small black opening in the sky’. Within fifteen minutes, the Hays Police Department became overwhelmed with dozens of phone calls all reporting the same phenomenon. No action was taken by the police department until the following morning when they decided to send a trooper to the town of Ashley to investigate the matter. At 7:55am on August 9th, 1952, Hays Police Officer Allan Mace radioed the station. He reported that, despite following the one way road leading into Ashley, he became lost. According to his report, the road “continued along its normal path, but somehow ended up back in Hays.” Officer Mace went on to add that the road never curved, or bent in any direction. At 9:15am, seven of

Page 10 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

the town’s 10 police cars were sent to investigate the situation, and all seven cars came to the same conclusion. Throughout the night phone calls continued to pour into the police station, all reporting the black hole was getting bigger. All the callers were advised to stay indoors and not to travel out of town. At 8:17pm, Mrs. Elaine Kantor reported her

neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Milton, and their children, were missing. According to Mrs. Kantor, the Milton’s attempted to leave town earlier in the evening. The Hays Police, who were on the one way road that leads out of town, never spotted the family or anybody else drive down that road. At 7:38am, August 10th, 1952, phone calls from Ashley into the Hays Police Station reported that the town was in total darkness. The sun had never risen. At 10:15am, at the request of Hays Law Enforcement, a helicopter from Topeka, Kansas flew over the region in which Ashley, Kansas stood. The town was never observed from air. At 12:43pm on August 11th, 1952, Ms. Phoebe Daniels called into Hays Police Station to report that her daughter Erica was having conversations with her father, who had died three years prior. To add to her concern, she reported that her daughter was also attempting to go outside into the dark, and when she tried stopping her, her daughter pushed her away

and said; “I must join them”. Over the course of the next twelve hours, a reported 320 phone calls were made to the police station all describing similar phenomenon. By the following morning, all 217 children in the town of Ashley, Kansas had disappeared. At 5:19pm on August 13th, 1952, an elderly man named Scott Luntz reported a growing fire to the south. According to his description, the fire seemed to turn the distant black sky into bright red and orange that seemed to extend high into the sky. Throughout the day, calls continued into the station, stating that the fire, in addition to moving north, now seemed to engulf the whole sky. No fire was ever witnessed by any neighboring communities or law enforcement officials. The reports continued until 12:09am on the morning of August 14th, 1952. The last phone call, placed by a Mr. Benjamin Endicott, reported that the fire in the sky had grown so intense that it began to appear as daytime over the town. The phone call ended abruptly. The next phone call wouldn’t be placed until the following evening. The following is the entire transcript of the final phone call to be received by the Hays Police Department out of the town of Ashley, Kansas. It was placed at 9:46pm on the evening of August 15th, 1952. In this recorded phone call, the officer on duty is Officer Peter Welsch. The caller has been identified as Ms. April Foster. [BEGIN PHONECALL] Officer Welsch: “Hays Police Department.” (Muffled static). Officer Welsch: “Hello?” Foster: “YES…yes, hello?” Officer Welsch: “Ma’am, who am I speaking with?” Foster: “My name is April, April Foster. (Coughs) Please, sir. Please help me.” Officer Welsch: “What is hap-

pening, ma’am?” Foster: “Last night….last night they came back.” Officer Welsch: “Ma’am, I’m going to need you to-” Foster: “LAST NIGHT THEY CAME BACK! (Cries)”

they’re looking for US! (Cries). He…he said: “Mommy, I’m okay now! See, I can walk again! Where are you, Mommy? I want to see you!”(Sobs).” Officer Welsch: “….Ma’am, where are you now? Are you safe?”

Foster: “They all came in the fire.”

Foster: “I’m hiding. Just like everyone else. We saw them coming through the fields…. and….some people opened their doors for them. God, the SCREAMING. (Pause). I don’t know what happened to them. But... (Pause) their houses caught fire and they….caved in. I have my curtains drawn. I’m hiding in the closet right now and- (Silence).”

Officer Welsch: “What do you mean everyone?”

Officer Welsch: “Ma’am, is everything alright, are you okay?”

Foster: “My son…..I saw my son last night. He was walking… he was walking down the street. He was burned. Jesus Christ HE WAS BURNED!”

Foster: (Silence).

Officer Welsch: “Ma’am, I’m going to need you to calm down, and speak clearly. What happened? Who came back?” Foster: “(Sobbing). Everyone.” Officer Welsch: “Everyone?”

But he never wanted to listen.” Officer Welsch: “Ma’am, what you’re saying isn’t making any sense. You said everyone came back?” Foster: “ARE YOU FUCKING LISTENING TO ME? EVERYONE. Everyone came back. Everyone who died, or went missing, they’re back. And

Disappearance of Ashley, Kansas” Foster: (Sound of muffled footsteps. Muffled: “Mommy? Mommy, where are you hiding?”) Officer Welsch: “Stay quiet.” Foster: (Sound of heavy footsteps. Laughter. Muffled: “I found you, MOMMY!”) (Indiscernable screaming and noise) (Phone cuts to static). Officer Welsch: “Ma’am? MA’AM?!” [End phone call]. The following morning, at 6:55am, the law enforcement officials of the Hays Police Department arrived at the location of Ashley, Kansas. A

smoldering, burning fissure in the Earth was all that remained. At 3:28am on August 17th, 1952, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake was measured by the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake itself was felt throughout Kansas and the Midwest. The epicenter was determined to be directly under Ashley, Kansas. When state law officials arrived they found a smoldering fissure in the earth measuring 1000 yards in length and 500 yards in width. The depth was never determined. On August 29th, 1952, after twelve days of searching, the state and local law enforcements called off the search for the missing 679 residents of Ashley, Kansas. At 2:27am that same night a magnitude 7.5 earthquake was measured by the United States Geological Survey. The epicenter was at the exact same spot. When law enforcement arrived at 5:30am to investigate, they reported that the fissure in the earth was closed.

GRANT CAMERON AND THE UFO LEGACY OF THE PRESIDENTS By Sean Casteel

tually believe they’re doing the right thing. You start to see that there are some fairly legitimate reasons why these people are absolutely petrified to do it. Once you spill the milk, you can’t get it back in the bottle.” Cameron warns that even a partial disclosure of the UFO secret would quickly go spiraling out of control and the president would be faced with questions he simply could not answer. He gave a for instance:

Continued from page 7 . . . . “My background at university was political studies, and I studied Soviet politics and the Kremlin. It’s the same sort of thing. You’ve got to see how these people think and what their thought processes are on this whole matter, rather than taking the utopian view that it would be good to get this released and get

free energy and so on. You’ve got to look at what’s motivating them to stay on the sidelines. They’re like you and I. They want the best for their kids, for their grandchildren. They’re not trying to screw anybody around. They’re trying to do the best they can. “So something has convinced them that this can’t be released. They ac-

“Mr. President, you’re constitutionally responsible for the protection of the American people. It’s been estimated that millions of people have been abducted by these aliens. What are you doing to stop this?” “And there’s nothing he can do,” Cameron said. “Now, if I’m the National Security Advisor to the president, I’d say, ‘Mr. President, the longer the time you give us, the more answers we’re going to have when you finally have to talk about

this. Right now we know about 20 percent of it. If you can drag it out for the next 10 years, we’re going to know 40 or 50 percent. We might have the answers. But you can’t go out there when we don’t have enough of the answers. We’re still trying to figure this thing out.’” Cameron said that he has heard from another source, an eschatologist, or a believer in the End Time prophecies, named Dan Smith. Smith claims that a man named Ronald Pandolfi, who used to head up the “Weird Desk” at the CIA, where he dealt with UFOs and other paranormal concerns, told Smith that there is an employee of the National Security Agency whose job it is to deal with people in the government that have been abducted by aliens. Apparently, that list includes a former member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former Vice President Al Gore’s two daughters. “That’s a National Security issue,” Cameron said, “if somebody is actually getting control of the minds of the people who are running the country. And this is coming from the CIA leaking into the UFO commu-

nity. So that’s the kind of stuff, when we talk about disclosure, that I think is really troubling to government officials.” In the end, the issues surrounding disclosure may all come down to the media suddenly realizing that the UFO phenomenon is something real. “That’s when it gets out of control,” Cameron said. “The media is the key to me. They have to start to believe. They have to catch wind that they’ve been had and realize there’s a story that’s going to sell some advertising, like a Tiger Woods-type story. Then CNN is going to jump on it 24 hours a day and at that point it’s going to roll.”

What Some Say about the Existence of UFOs by Dennis Balthaser

Notable quotes on the existance of UFOs.

The debate whether UFOs exist or not has been discussed for decades, and the simple answer has always been yes they do exist. If it’s flying and is unidentifiable it’s a UFO. The more complex question I suppose, is trying to ascertain what it is that is flying and unidentifiable. Over and over many of the reported UFOs have in fact been identified, creating the term IFO, (Identified Flying Object.) The bigger question however seems to be whether it is something terrestrial, developed or created on earth, by us or some other country, or is it from somewhere “out there”, perhaps in our own galaxy, a distant galaxy or somewhere else in the universe. For years we’ve heard from the “naysayers” that claim UFOs can’t possibly be from “out there” because of the vast distances they’d have to travel, the propulsion systems they’d have to use, and the fact that our own military and government dispute their existence. Those type excuses have lingered on for years by many that always have the same excuse, and don’t bother bringing anything new to the table. I basically believe that those type individuals are living in a box, thinking we humans know everything. The truth of the matter is the fact that if these unknown craft being seen are manned, their technology and knowledge would transcend ours by hundreds, maybe

thousands of years, because we can’t go out there yet. That egotistical attitude has prevailed for many years by many scientists, astronomers, debunkers, and others that always seem to have all the answers. Fortunately for those of us seriously interested in the subject of Ufology, there is support for the existence of UFOs from many impressive sources, which I will share with you. As with all of my research however, there are some individuals that claim extraterrestrial UFOs do exist, but I have to question their claims based on their record, lack of scientific data, omission of references, etc. That list of individuals would include Bob Lazar of Area 51 fame, Phil Schneider about the Underground Dulce New Mexico base, Lt. Col. Phil Corso, with no references for his best selling book “The Day After Roswell”, Tony Bragalia about Roswell, and several others. I am hopeful that in time new information will surface, which will allow me to retract my current views on those mentioned above.

“It is time for the truth to be brought out in open Congressional hearings. Behind the scenes high-ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about the UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense.” —Admiral Hillenkoetter, first Director of the CIA, February 27, 1960

“I certainly believe in aliens in space, and that they are indeed visiting our planet. They may not look like us, but I have very strong feelings that they have advanced beyond our mental capabilities.” — Senator Barry Goldwater,

“I feel that the Air Force has not been giving out all the available information on the Unidentified Flying Objects. You cannot disregard so many unimpeachable sources.”

Below are listed some quotes from individuals that I feel are from more credible sources. These sources also indicate that the possibility of UFOs being from “out there”, and real, has been suggested for many years.

“There are many reasons to believe that UFOs do exist. There is so much evidence from reliable witnesses.” —Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, March 28, 1954

“The phenomenon of UFOs does exist, and it must be treated seriously.”

—Mikhail Gorbachev, Premiere of the Soviet Union, May 4, 1990

“I can assure you the flying saucers, given that they exist, are not constructed by any power on earth.”

—President Harry Truman, April 4, 1950, White House Press Conference “In our obsession with antagonisms of the moment, we often forget how much unites all the members of humanity. Perhaps we need some outside, universal threat to make us recognize this common bond. I occasionally think, how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world. And yet, I ask is not an alien force ALREADY among us?” “There are only a handful of people who know the truth about this.” —President Ronald

“I am aware that hundreds of military and airline pilots, airport personnel, missile trackers and other competent observers have reported sightings…These UFOs are interplanetary devices systematically observing the earth, either manned or under remote control, or both.” — Col. Joseph Bryan, CIA 1960

“The vastness of the universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth, even intelligent ones.” — The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, Jesuit Director of the Vatican Observatory, 2008

“Mankind has long wondered if we’re “alone in the universe. (But) only in our period do we really have evidence. No, we’re not alone.”

—Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, at the National Press Club, 2009

There are many more quotes available by notable individuals, making similar comments that not only are UFOs real, but that most believe the occupants operating those craft are likely from somewhere “out there”, (wherever out there might be). Listing these comments will not change the view of those against the possibility of other life forms existing in the universe, while for me as a UFO researcher, I have assurance that the search should continue. Granted it’s an “up-hill” battle, but worth it if it proves we are not alone in the universe. - Dennis

GeoEngineering, Global Climate Disruptions, Chemtrails: “Our Atmosphere is a Massive Physics Lab”

GeoEngineering, Global Climate Disruptions, Chemtrails: “Our Atmosphere is a Massive Physics Lab” By Dane Wigington | Global Research Dane Wigington gives a presentation in Northern California on the harmful effects of Geoengineering, declaring that this is among the most important issues affecting humanity. The very essentials needed to sustain life on earth are being recklessly destroyed by these programs. This is not a topic that will begin to affect us in several years, but is now already causing massive animal and plant die off around the world, as well as human illness. The debate over whether geoengineering programs are going on is now a moot point. We have more than enough data to confirm it. We have actual footage showing tankers spraying. The materials showing up on the ground are exactly the same materials mentioned in the numerous geoengineering patents and documents.

Page 18 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

Visit our website for a list of these government patents and documents. Our skies today are simply not normal. Upon examination this cannot be denied. They are filled with nanoparticulates of heavy metals. But the skies have been filled with grid patterns for so long now that we are used to them and do not see them anymore. Sadly, the fact is that people do not look up. To be clear, what we are seeing is not cloud seeding to increase rainfall. These particulates are designed to block the sun and move the jet stream. Dane explains how this is causing the drought and deluge being experienced around the globe. Our atmosphere is nothing but a massive physics lab to geoengineering scientists who have no concern whatsoever about the consequences to humanity or any living thing, including themselves. The experiments are literally tearing the planet apart and destroying life on earth. Dane reports, among other things, on: • Geoengineering related climate disruptions, extreme drought and deluge • Ozone depletion

• Methane release • Drastic reduction in arctic sea ice • Global oxygen content reductions • Oceans on the brink of collapse • Massive fish die offs • 200 species becoming extinct every single day • A drastic rise in Autism, Alzheimer’s, and Dementia • Crisis level forest reductions • The sterilization of soils making it impossible for plants to grow without Monsanto’s aluminum resistant seeds Dane Wigington presents hard data which reveals what these catastrophic programs have done to our planet to date and what they will do if they are allowed to continue. Please take the time to watch this video, follow up with some investigation of your own on our site: http://www.geoengineeringwatch.org, and share this information far and wide. Dane Wigington “I began study and research on meteorology and atmospheric change in the late 90’s. After moving to Shasta County Cal. in 2001 and building one of the largest “off grid” solar homes in Northern California, I took notice of the of the sporadic aircraft “trails” and “grid patterns” that were blocking ever increasing amounts of my homes

solar charging capacity (sometimes up to 80%). Subsequent research led me straight to the subjects of SAG (stratospheric aerosol geoengineering) and SRM (solar radiation management). I began lab testing of rain samples on a consistent basis. The skyrocketing toxicity of once pristine rainfall over the Pacific Northwest was shocking. Massive and ever escalating quantities of the exact heavy metals called for in numerous geoengineering patents were present in all samples tested

at Northern California’s state certified lab. I witnessed a stark and accelerating tree mortality along with insect and amphibian decline. Years of continuing research have left me with the following conclusion; the threat posed by geoengineering, both immediate and long term, cannot be overstated. I have spent the last decade dedicated to researching and exposing the long list of dire consequences related to the ongoing atmospheric spraying programs.”

What If Ron Paul Were President? By Cameron Cutrone We’re in the midst of a full fledged scandal tsunami here in the States. And, given the out of control nature of bureaucracy, it’s hard to pin all of the collective frustration at one person. But one thing is for sure, Barack Obama’s attitude, aptitude, and permissiveness is definitely a major culprit in trying to explain what exactly is going wrong here.

1. Fast and Furious:

An arms running operation between the southwestern states and Mexico executed by the ATF. First off, what in the hell is OUR “gun control” group doing throwing gas on the fire that is the Mexican drug cartel wars? Are they stacking the chips behind their favorite player? If so, it is to the detriment of our citizens and their domestic tranquility. Two border patrolmen have been killed due to

this “arms tracing” operation and that must really bother this administration, unless of course, in the words of Madeline Albright, they feel that the collateral damage was “worth it.” Either way, would this type of operation been handled the same way under a Ron Paul administration? Heads would roll, from the Justice Dept. to the ATF on down. It’s also a stretch to postulate that such an authorization for this calamity would be made in the first place.

2. Benghazi:

We were told that this consulate was under attack because of a youtube video. Facts learned later reveal that being unlikely. Perhaps the CIA torture chamber a few blocks down had something to do with it and the Consulate was just a softer target. Would we be arming Al-Qaida one minute and attacking them the next under a Ron Paul administration? Not if his voting record was any indication of how he would handle foreign policy in the oval office. Chances are we wouldn’t have signed on with NATO for that war in the first place.

used to snoop on domestic law abiding citizens would never have been accepted. It’s so disheartening to see these supposed “liberals” and “progressives” coming out in defense of this crime against the 4th amendment. Bill Mahar, CNN, MSNBC, everyone’s rallying around Big Brother and licking the boots of the shadow government. They’re either that scared, or that much of a lapdog for their political team that they think is “winning.” This behavior isn’t winning. It’s rotting our souls. It’s rotting our rule of law. It’s losing the Republic. As far as Mr. Snowden, the leaker that drew the ire of so many, Ron Paul has been the only one to stand up and on national news, declare Snowden to be a “hero.” Imagine the transparency and respect for privacy his presidency would’ve championed. Snowden wouldn’t be fearing for his life, on the run in a foreign country. This list my friends, could go on and on. Is it a pointless exercise to list all of these offenses? No. We must continue to pay attention, now more than ever. Would all corruption and excess automatically cease if we had

a better president? Certainly not. But we must have standards. We have, unfortunately, missed a huge chance to strike a major blow to corruption and excess by electing a voice for liberty and respect for privacy. Let’s not miss that chance again. We can’t afford to. Shame on us for not electing Ron Paul in 2008 or 2012.

It’s so disheartening to see these supposed “liberals” and “progressives” coming out in defense of this crime against the 4th amendment. Bill Mahar, CNN, MSNBC, everyone’s rallying around Big Brother and licking the boots of the shadow government.

last hear of a non-violent person becoming violent because they had consumed marijuana?

“I’m sitting here lonely like a broken man. I serve my time doin’ the best I can. Walls and bars they surround me. But, I don’t want no sympathy. No baby, no baby, All I need is some tender lovin’. To keep me sane in this burning oven. And, when my time is up, you’ll be my reefer. Life gets worse on God’s green earth. Be my reefer, got to keep smokin’ that thing. “

I thought of all the families that are separated from each other due to these unjust prison sentences. How many fathers missed another Father’s Day celebration this year? How many young men are funneled into the criminal justice system due to the absence of their father in their lives. And how many more young fathers are being sucked into this same negativity by the continuation of the failure of what we call the “War on Drugs”? I see the grandchildren of men I arrested for drug offenses being sentenced to prison for drug offenses. When will this madness stop? When will you start a dialogue with co-workers, family members, church members and friends to crank up the beginning of the end for this travesty of a program?

The above lyrics from Grand Funk Railroad’s version of Inside Looking Out hit me right between the eyes this afternoon. I had to think about all the brothers and sisters sitting in American prisons and jails due to the War on Drugs. This situation continues to trouble me whenever I go into a courtroom and see the same insanity repeating itself over and over again. In both Federal and State courts people are being arrested, charged and convicted of possession of an herb (cannabis) that God put on this planet and called it “good” (Genesis 1:29-31). Certainly, many of those imprisoned were involved in narcotics (cocaine, heroin, meth, ice, etc.) transactions but all drug violence is caused by the illegality of the substance more than any other factor. But really, when did you

Page 20 • www.paranoidmagazine.com

I implore each of you to voice your opinion about this issue after doing a little homework on just how much damage the War on Drugs has done to our country. I strongly remind all that will listen that any set of laws that are more destructive than the thing made illegal is an unjust set of laws and must be done away with. Clearly, the legal consequences of the drug war are doing more harm to our country than the use of drugs is doing to our citizens. Could legalization, taxation, regulation and education give us any worse results than we are currently seeing? I think not!

On June 10, 2013 I began a Federal Drug Conspiracy trial with three other fine criminal defense attorneys in San Antonio. The case charged three Jamaicans with attempting to purchase cocaine and marijuana from undercover (UC) DEA officers. The case began when a professional snitch (rat) who travels the country trying to find buyers and funnel them to DEA agents in San Antonio, offered a deal that would have fronted a hundred pounds of pot to one of the Jamaicans. The DEA UC officers posed as Cartel members and after tricking the Jamaican into coming to San Antonio it turns out there was no weed to be fronted and the talks were directed towards a cocaine deal that could be used to finance the pot deal. The second Jamaican was brought down and the hook was set to sell 15 kilos of cocaine for $100K and a used Cadillac Escalade. Of course the ruse was solely for the purpose of seizing the vehicle, the money and arresting those that were only here due to the actions of the rat and the DEA agents. The rat was paid over $9K for setting the spider web and was also allowed to stay in the country (he is here illegally) and is on target to receive his citizenship if he keeps setting others up for arrest. This rat is not alone in our country as there are countless others whose source of income and protection continues as long as the DEA and local narcotics officers are fed more victims in this slaughter house. Incredibly there was

no legal problem with the fact that the rat was the one that sought out the initial buyer in this case. A man that had never been arrested or charged with a criminal offense in his life. As the jury panel arrived we were greeted by an attentive audience and they gave us lots of feedback when Judge X. Rodriguez allowed us to question them during voir dire. Voir Dire is the portion of a trial where the attorneys get to ask the panel members questions about their personal views on pertinent issues. Most federal judges don’t allow the attorneys to question the potential jurors. Judge Rodriguez is a fair and passionate jurist and he saw that justice and fairness was injected from his courtroom into the American Justice system. Many of the panel members were excused because they admitted that they could not be fair in the trial to the men accused. Many felt that they would give a police officer more credibility than civilian witnesses and the accused based only of the fact that a witness was a cop. If the judge had not allowed us to participate in the Voir Dire we would never have known to ask the judge to strike those persons from the panel. You see, things aren’t always as they seem if you allow yourself to judge a book by its cover. The members that were struck “for cause” looked just like the other members of the panel but good lawyering pays off at times like this. Since the charges involved a “conspiracy” the government had to prove that “two or more

persons” (not including cops and rats) were involved in the plan. After both sides move to strike members for cause they get to use their preemptory strikes. These are strikes which can be used to eliminate panel members that gave the attorneys pause or concerns about particular members. Sometimes it is someone’s profession, spouse, answers to other questions, dress, facial expressions during voir dire or some whim on the attorneys part that causes a strike. Once both sides had exhausted all of their preemptory strikes the jury was sworn in and the testimony began. The UC that had posed as a cartel member did a poor job of testifying and failed to make notes about thirty some odd phone conversations he claimed to have had with two of the alleged conspirators. The UC claimed that he didn’t have access to a pen or pencil and paper during these phone calls, calls that he initiated and made himself. When I asked him to do some math for me during my cross he admitted that he didn’t bring a pen with him to court. He also admitted that he could have tape recorded the calls he made but that he just failed to do so. The jury was not impressed to say the least. Hidden tape recordings were played for the jury but they were of poor quality and offered little in the way of evidence. The UC tried to interpret what was being said on the tapes but the jurors could hear with their own ears and the government’s case was damaged further.

Inside Looking Out By Jamie Balagia

After the rat testified we almost had to have the courtroom fumigated to get rid of the stench he left behind. While testifying he was arrogant and distasteful at best and his lack of credibility with the jury was unmistakable. Another UC testified but his answers appeared to help

the defense as he refused to speculate when doing so could have hurt the accused cause. The special agent in charge testified last and tried to tell the jury that my client and the truck driver he had hired had both confessed to the crime after being given their Miranda Rights. There was never any evidence presented that the truck driver did anything other than accept a legitimate job. The jury had a hard time believing that the confessions were not audio taped, video taped or written down with the accused signatures attached. The special agent testified that DEA has a policy that prohibits any of the above being done since just an agent’s word that a confession was given is good enough for government work. That is a policy that must be changed immediately or we can just let the DEA be judge and jury. By late Wednesday afternoon two of the accused had testified and we had all finished our

final arguments. The only thing left to do was to read the jury their instructions and let them deliberate. They selected a jury foreperson and agreed to come back Thursday and get to work. After seven hours of tough deliberations the jury announced it had reached a verdict and we gathered to hear the news. Judge Rodriguez received the verdict and announced six Not Guilty verdicts to the courtroom as each of the accused faced two counts apiece. To see the relief and joy that hit the faces of the three men accused and their legal teams will forever be etched in my mind. I cannot say enough about the incredible trial efforts of Jeff and Kristen Mulliner and Scott McCrum who represented the other two accused men. I think it right to tell you that the prosecutor was a fair and honorable opponent who abided by the rules of court and did his best to do what is a difficult job. I also wish to thank Adam Crawshaw and June Gonzales from my office for all the hard work they contributed

to the hard fought victory. Unfortunately, my Hero is being held for deportation as his Visa is no longer valid. He showed great fortitude, as did the other two, by standing firm and fighting against what sometimes seems like insurmountable odds in announcing Not Guilty and ready for trial when pressed to the cliff. I wonder how many others might have heard those same two words over the years if only they had stood tall and hired committed defense attorneys. I will long

remember Milton’s positive attitude and faith in the American jury system. Milton did extend an invitation to visit him in Jamaica as soon as he arrives back home. But that will be another story, for another time!

Invisibility ‘Time Cloak’ Developed Invisibility ‘Time Cloak’ Developed By Melissa Hogenboom

An “invisibility” time cloak which is able to hide events in a continuous stream of light has been developed by scientists. The cloak works by manipulating the speed of light in optical fibres and means any interaction which takes place during this “hole in time” is not detected. That is, a beam of light can be manipulated along its path. The study is published in the journal Nature. The research builds upon a time cloak described last year that was only able to hide single brief events of time in an optical beam.

Hidden Data

This work is different to other “invisibility cloaks” in that it hides events in time, rather than spatial objects - which similar efforts have looked into. The team from the Purdue University in Indiana has shown it can hide events in the path of a continuous light beam by having several “holes in time”. The researchers were able to cloak nearly half the data put in the beam’s path, which they would otherwise be able to detect.

Cloaking, just as it sounds, is where an object or event is hidden from vision. This can apply to frequencies of light or sound. For example, stealth war planes can be difficult to detect on enemy radar. “We were able to push the light forward and back using commercial telecoms components, that are controlled by electrical signals,” said Andrew Weiner, who co-authored the paper. “When one sends high-speed data over an optical fibre in the existing infrastructure, in many cases it’s just 1s and 0s (binary code).

Bendy Light

“In our system, we can hide the 1s and 0s. There can also be other kinds of disturbances in the light but this cloak provides a zone where one doesn’t see how the light is being changed,” Prof Weiner told BBC News. He compared how a stream of light is manipulated to a flowing river. “Think about taking a region of that river and pushing some of it forward, and some backwards so there are holes where there isn’t any water. Maybe there’s a dam, and we can pop the dam on and off very quickly, to somehow disturb or divert the water. “If we part the water so it doesn’t see the dam popping

up and down, it isn’t disturbed, and afterwards we can put the water back together so it looks like a nice calm river again. “That’s how we control the flow of the light. We’re pushing it forward and backwards in time, so it avoids events that would otherwise disturb it,” Prof Weiner explained. Though called a time cloak, it’s actually “not a manipulation of time, it’s a manipulation of light” explained Greg Gbur, who specialises in optical physics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The researcher, who was not involved in the study, said it showed a huge advance in the work on the time cloak. “In the first time cloak paper, they discussed hiding events of a few billionths of a second once in a while. Here, they are talking about being able to hide data 46% of the time. This really suggests that this has gone from a curiosity to something that could be used in optical communications and data processing,” added Dr Gbur. Ortwin Hess, a physicist at Imperial College London, said the study was a “remarkable extension of the previously demonstrated time lens principle”.

‘Undesirable communication’

“An important part of the present paper exploits the principle of space-time duality, which means that like in the original concept of a temporal cloak, one of the directions of spatial cloaking had been replaced by time.

Though called a time cloak, it’s actually “not a manipulation of time, it’s a manipulation of light” explained Greg Gbur, who specialises in optical physics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. “It shows how beautiful the space-time principles are that can be used in optics. While previous cloaks are interesting as well, in the sense that they change optics in space, now we can change the way light, and thus information, behaves in space and time,” Prof Hess told BBC News. The research has several possible applications, he added. It could make data more tamper proof, could be used to moni-

tor “undesirable communication” and could be used by governments or large firms that handle sensitive or confidential information. Other work on cloaking

Optical camouflage technology:

A modified background image is projected onto a cloak of retro-reflective material (the kind used to make projector screens); the wearer becomes invisible to anyone standing at the projection source

The “mirage effect:

Electric current is passed through submerged carbon nanotubes to create very high local temperatures, this causes light to bounce off them, hiding objects behind

Adaptive heat cloaking: A cam-

era records background temperatures, these are displayed by sheets of hexagonal pixels which change temperature very quickly, camouflaging even moving vehicles from heatsensitive cameras

Calcite crystal prism: Calcite crystals send the two polarisations of light in different directions. By gluing prism-shaped crystals together in a specific geometry, polarised light can be directed around small objects, effectively cloaking them “In our system, we can hide the 1s and 0s. VIDEODROME (1983) “Death to Videodrome! Purely experimental and purely original. This one blew me away. While I thought I was going to watch a cheap, low-budget, early 80’s horror movie with the most basic plot and substance in fact it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable horror movie experiences in recent memory. I love a good horror movie, but lets face it. They are few and far between. The most recent horror movie I’ve seen that just had me floored from beginning to end was “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: the beginning” which I finally just saw on dvd in uncut form. Phenomenal, brilliant and creepy as hell. I couldn’t believe how incredible this movie was. If you have not yet seen it, get it.

of this movie since the early 80’s, mostly in articles, I never met anyone who actually saw it. And I never really made much of an effort because, come on, even the title sounds a little cheesy. Boy was I wrong, on so many levels. Yes it is a horror movie. But it’s a very smart horror movie with style, substance and an incredible wit about it. And it’s strange. Very, very strange. Almost trippy. There are plenty of times during this movie that you verbally yell out, “What the #@$&”!?. Seriously. And I never realized how much of a cult following this movie had. I realize why now, but I never knew how much of an impact this movie had in the horror genre. THE PLOT: I’ll try my best to keep this simple. Because in all honesty, after 30 minutes you’re never sure if what you’re seeing is really happening or all part of the main character’s hallucinations. And it’s never explained.

Back to “Videodrome”. I just recently saw David Cronenberg’s excellent “A History of Violence” and got in the mood to track down his previous efforts. While I’ve seen a ton of his stuff, “The Fly”, “The Dead Zone”, “Naked Lunch”, “Dead Ringers”, “Scanners”, and a ton of others, there are plenty that I have not seen. And he’s made a lot. The first on the top of that list was “Videodrome”. While I’ve heard

Max Renn is the president of a lowrent, UHF station called CIVIC-TV. They specialize in broadcasting softporn or anything that will push the bar on taste. Max is always looking for the next big thing that will blow everyone’s mind and make CIVIC-TV a household name. Sleaze, violence, and torture is what he looks for. Playing it safe is not an option. One day he comes across a few seconds of grainy “snuff film” on their pirate

satellite. Upon first viewing, he’s immediately hooked on videodrome. This is exactly what he’s looking for. For his personal satisfaction and his CIVIC-TV station. It depicts a woman being brutally tortured and raped. He becomes obsessed with finding out where this came from and if it’s real. He enlists the help of a couple of colleagues to help him track down the source of this material because at no matter what cost, he must have more. But things start to change immediately. Max starts hallucinating. First just once or twice, but each time he sees videodrome they become more frequent and much more violent and disturbing. And that’s where things get tricky. Because like I said before, after the first half hour, you never know if what you’re seeing is part of the plot, or part of Max’s hallucinations. And you’re left having to figure that out for yourself. But what “is” come to be known is that videodrome is a massive conspiracy that causes brain tumors to anyone who watches it! These tumors are what cause the hallucinations and are meant to keep America “pure” so that we can survive the “tough times”. And that’s it. That’s as close to an explanation we ever really get since were watching the movie from Max Renn’s point of view. And in all honesty, this movie gets so bizarre after the first half that you just throw all caution to the

wind and just sit back and enjoy the ride. And what a ride it is thanks to master F/X artist Rick Baker. You’re subjected to incredible and disturbing images never seen before 1983. I only wish I had seen this back then so I could experience what kind of reaction this film received upon its release. Writer/Director David Cronenberg continues to push the bar of conventional filmmaking. He has his own style and it’s purely evident here in all its forms whether with the camera or with his type of storytelling. James Woods is perfectly cast as the sleazy Max Renn and I can honestly say I will never look at him the same way again. He’s always been one of my favorite underrated actors, but seeing him take a chance with this movie gave me a huge amount of respect for him. Also on board is Blondie rocker Debbie Harry who plays Max’s self-mutilating girlfriend who goes missing and is soon seen in videodrome. But is it real or is Max hallucinating? The gore and makeup effects are top notch and plenty for viewers to devour. I’m completely dedicated to tracking down every single one of Cronenbergs films in the hope that I might be as surprised with any other of his movies as I was with this one. Purely experimental and original, a head trip worth checking out.

Videodrome opened in Feb. of ’83 and grossed only 2 million dollars. While it cost 5 million to make, it tanked at the box office but has since become a legend in the horror field and a true “Cult Classic”. Sampled by at least 32 different musical artists, it’s kept its presence in the geek world known for almost 25 years and can still hold its own against any new “concept” film released today. There are two DVD versions out. The first is a bare bones early disc with just a trailer for a special feature. It is unrated and not a bad one to get for $6. But as with all my favorite movies, Criterion has released an incredible package that includes interviews, documentaries and essays of its impact on film today. Track it, get it, experience Videodrome! “Death to Videodrome, long live the new flesh”!!
