KLANKMAN

SMALL HALL Klankman has just released his debut album which is filled with hypnotizing dark techno and twisted acid. It came as no surprise that the infamous Bunker label was to release this slab of pulsating vinyl. Fascinated by the occult dimensions of electronic music Klankman’s (a.k.a. Maarten Epskamp) sound is dominated by hypnotizing tunes and rough beats.

SXNF has it’s own hidden laboratory: The Mezzaznine, a room to experience installations, performances and jawdropping scientific experiments.

FRIDAY & SATURDAY

28

FRIDAY 01:15

RICH AUCOIN SMALL HALL Flamboyant Canadian musician Rich Aucoin celebrates life. His shows are not just musical performances; he transforms them into interactive euphoric wonders of joy. Aucoin’s lager-than-life approach will have him bouncing through the hall, until he has personally won over every person in the audience to take part. “We can make something awesome together”, is his credo, and his uplifting and beautifully crafted electropop changes techni-colour with every beat. “This heart is all that keeps us up. This heart is beating”

28

SMALL HALL Having worked With Daniel Johnston en The Mountain Goats already shows that The Wave Pictures have a knack for writing high-quality songs with strangely ridiculous yet sublime lyrics. Their brooding, folkie pop songs are dished with sharp melodies and a voice that reminisces an off-pitched Morrisey having a happy day.

THE WAVE PICTURES SATURDAY 22:00

SATURDAY 20:15

NOBLESSE

+ WORKSHOP ‘MUSIC AND THE MOVING BODY’ MAIN HALL Noblesse has operated in the Dutch artrock scene and crafted an indie-sound that is brooding and explosive and combines this with dense and abstract poetry, video-art and even choreography. Prior to the concert, choreografer Amos Ben Tal, singer of noblesse, invites you to his workshop in which he explains how music and sound affect physicality and how the senses in the body affect songs. Come and activate your senses!

SMALL HALL Surfacing out of the depths of two decades of The Hague’s under- and upperground, DJ Wolf!Where? converges a wide range of sounds into multilayered adventurous sets where dark-techno fuses with the full on dynamics of electro, house, new wave, acid, disco, post-punk and pychedelica.

WOLF!WHERE? FRIDAY 00:45

27

SATURDAY 20:30

WENDY MC NIELL PRINS 27 “… my songs retain the love of wide open space and the longing those big prairie skies can generate”. It would be short-sighted to file Wendy Mc Niell under Country Noir, or even worse, label her Singer-songwriter just out of convenience. The Canadian born artist is much more than these generic labels, as her great talents refuse to be pinned down. From dark theatrical country to imaginative French chansons: her mostly sober songs reveal a love for travel and interest in different cultures and are at times reminiscent of Sinead’o Connor, Regina Spector and even Kate Bush.

PRINS 27 “What Is Love? Baby, don’t hurt me no more.” Haddaway’s 1992 hit got covered in a beautiful melancholy mood by The Hague’s duo Chris Kuhlen (formerly of Topless) and Bella Hay. This version and follow-up EP ‘Romance’ attracted so much attention that the band got invited to perform at festivals as divers as Pitch, Sniester and Reeperbahn with State-X New Forms ending their year on a high note.

SONS OF KEMET SMALL HALL In search of a universal consciousness The sons found a unique blend of jazz, Caribbean folk music and African Diasporan history. Sons of Kemet is a supergroup of sorts led by clarinetist, saxophonist and composer Shabaka Hutchings, featuring Oren Marshall on tuba and both Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford on drums. The combination of these mighty creative and acclaimed forces yields music that is powerful, lyrical and, above all, fiercely original.

LOUNGE Only one description fits this band: ‘primitive blues-rock built out of dirty, hypnotic swamp blues and rasping fuzz, whore-house angles and dirt infused one man band grooves’. Add to this Drip Dry Man’s distinctive vocal, his exotic dresscode and make-up and the urge to feast on our burlesque intentions.

FRIDAY 23:30

RELLAVEC

CAFÉ Rellavec is a duo that combines electronics with authentic percussion. Rellavec’s live set is a unique take on Trapp, Tech-house, Jungle, Tekno and Acid. The combination of rigid drumcomputers with live played bongo, djembe and berimau offers a lively trip from Berlin basements to African tribal-gatherings.

CAFÉ With distorted analogue synthesizers, frantic drum assaults, effect-drenched guitar arrangements and shrieking vocals the three-piece of Batalj concocts a barely comprehensible soundscape of deformed rhythms, riffs, blasts, bleeps and furious chaos.

SATURDAY 21:00

SATURDAY 21:15

23

JAMBINAI

MAIN HALL The Korean pack Jambinai produce mesmerising, meditative passages of looping beauty, slowly building up a dark scraping of increasing intensity until it all explodes into searing metallic sheets of apocalyptic angst. The trio’s appropriation of traditional Korean instruments like haegeum, piri and geomungo in combination with western guitar, bass, drums, loops and samples converges into an apocalyptic post-rock soundtrack from the dark borderlands where tradition meets the modern world.

MAIN HALL With dub, rock, electronic noise, ambient and jazz as its main pillars, Knalpot’s sound is an utterly hybrid mix of many genres, scraping the borders to trance with their very own stumble-grooves. During concerts they keep reinterpreting their compositions in a virtuoso way of multitasking between bass, guitar, casio’s, drums and big amounts of analogue electronics, creating sonic whirlwinds and wall-of-sound goodness that alternate with whispery-soft sections.

FRIDAY 22:45

DAWN OF MIDI

PRINS 27 With just a grand piano, an upright contrabass and a drumkit, this trio from Brooklyn crafts one long captivating locked groove. This groove was scripted and scored so meticulously that, even in this minimal set up, it sends out its instrumental loops into thousands of subtly different permutations. Dawn Of Midi is the missing link between jazz and dance, between structure and letting go, between sound and silence.

22

SMALL HALL This instrumental group creates a noise/postrock that contrasts free improvisation, controlled outbursts and intricately performed parts. The resulting layered dynamics keep the sound and performance playfull, adventurous and warmblooded.

BLACK MOON

FT. CHAMPION SOUND. ENTA DA STAGE (LIVE)

SMALL HALL Black Moon’s debutalbum ‘Enta Da Stage’ (1993) is nothing less than a true classic comparable to Public Enemy’s ‘It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back’. A good 20 years after the initial release it’s time for an integral live version of the album, backed up by the famous hip-hop live band of Champion Sound, making sure the massive yet funky beats of ‘Who Got Da Props?’ and ‘Buck ‘em Down’ sound fresher than ever.

PRINS 27 Thus Owls is centred around Swedish/ Canadian couple Erika and Simon Angell. Together they create fairytale like popmusic that, at times, takes a sharp left turn.Their latest album is a scrapbook of memories and oral transmissions from the Swedish Islands, brought to life in a sonic experiment in tone and colour in which Erika Angell’s outstanding voice injects the songs with a meandering sentiment and energy.

OHM

CAFÉ Besides being lead-singer in DI-RECT, Marcel Veenendaal runs an intriguing side-project called Ohm. Ohm has no fixed shape. Ohm is organic. Ohm lives, breathes; exists in the moment. You can see Ohm as a musical journey through Marcel’s eyes: an experience, an atmosphere, a direct emotion that can be felt by anyone who travels along with ears open.

20

LOUNGE ‘A prog pop duo with eclectic views that formed in outer space’ as Phoenix Lights decribes itself. Their music is ‘an emotional vortex that sucks you in, taking you on a journey through the tears and the laughter of the universe, making you experience the true intensity of life’s colours, leaving you at the edge of your seat’.

PHOENIX LIGHTS SATURDAY 22:00

SATURDAY 22:45

CHICKS ON SPEED MAIN HALL For the past 17 years the core of Chicks On Speed has been the collision between popmusic, art, activism and data: the cumulation of the trans-disciplinary ideal. At SXNF14 Chicks On Speed present their genre defying & shape-shifting new album ‘Artstravaganza’. This all-encompassing artwork includes musical contributions from a diverse range of collaborators, such as Julian Assange, Princess Francesca von Hapsburg, Yoko Ono, Peter Weibel, Angie Seah and Anat Ben David, among others.

18

SPECIAL SCREENING GOLDEN GANG Prior to the concert, there will be a special screening of the Chicks On Speed’s short film ‘Golden Gang’; a piece of work based upon Luis Bunuel’s iconic film ‘L’Age d’Or’ (The Golden Age).

SATURDAY 22:15

GUERILLA TOSS

CAFÉ Birthed from the depths of the sweaty basements of Boston, Guerrilla Toss has taken a twisted take on pop music, psychedelica, funk, wave, noise and dance. By touring relentlessly and providing their audience with an unforgettably intense and derailing live show that demands, and encourages, ravaging physical body movement of the listener, ‘Gtoss’ has garnered a loyal cult following.

LOUNGE Inspired by skateboarding, rhythm, funk, African music, soul, psych & electronic music this band builds up hypnotizing jams that slowly unfold their infectious groove over the audience.

FRIDAY 21:30

DAISY BELL

PRINS 27 The multi-disciplinary trio Daisy Bell composes songs around the poems of Wiliam blake (1757-1827). The sound varies from atmospheric soundscapes and minimal electropop to dark beats and raw bass. With the use of electronic- and acoustic instruments, live sampling, sound manipulation and plurivocals the band switches fluidly between delicate & fragile and raw & overwhelming.

16

SMALL HALL Grinding baritone sax, noisy guitars and pounding drums produce a splendid mix of sublime loud square metal jazz. Their vivid and adventurous debut album was well received, and made them share stages with bands like And So I Watch You From Afar and Maybeshewill.

XYLOURIS WHITE SMALL HALL Xylouris White brings together two masters of contemporary music: drummer Jim White, founder of the internationally acclaimed trio Dirty Three and Giorgos Xylouris (Psaragiorgis), master lutenist who has been described as ‘the future of Cretan music’. Together Xylouris White have created a new and compelling blend of melody and rhythm. To watch them absorbed in their music is an exhilarating experience.

PRINS 27 The rebellious Volendam born musician caught great attention with his music: intelligent folk, sometimes fragile, sometimes experimental but always passionate. Filled with pain, grief, venom, anger and cynicism his pain is laid to rest in intense, bare bone songs, that cut straight to the heart.

ICONOCLAST

CAFÉ The Hague’s illustre cult underground music scene has proven fertile in the past decades. One of the lasting names from the late 70’s raw punk scene was the notorious ‘The Mollesters’. Like a phoenix the group has risen from its ashes under the name of ICONOCLAST to bring a more psychedelic take of the typical raw The Hague sound.

CAFÉ With his frantic combination of rock‘n’roll, garage, psycho, country, roots and rockabilly, this one-man-band puts on a greasy basher ball with his drums under his feet and his guitar under his arm.

THE KYTEMAN ORCHESTRATHEJAMSESSIONS MAIN HALL “Ever since the first time we started playing together we have had an element called “the jam” in our live performances. The rules for this jam were quite simple: everything we played had to be conjured out of thin air, right there on the spot. The results were surprising to say the least. We’ve gone all over the place, from hiphop to opera, from classical to drum & bass, from jazz to punk etc. And as we went deeper down the rabbit hole, we discovered ways of bringing it all together. Now, 6 years after we first started playing together, we feel confident enough for the next challenge: a project solely based on these jams. This time we did not prepare songs, melodies, chords, rhythms or any of those things. This time we prepared sign language and flexibility. Being able to adept to any situation, so that we can bring the creative process of song writing to the stage. Everything you hear tonight will be played by us for the very first time. And after tonight we will never play it again.”

DICK RAAIJMAKERS PIANOFORTE (I.S.M. DAG IN DE BRANDING)

LOUNGE The Malian Songhoy Blues have a gritty bluesy sound, born out of defiance after the recent Mali conflicts in 2012 left the country and it’s people scarred. The group formed in the refugee camps to boost the morale. Yeah Yeah Yeah’s guitarist Nick Zinner helped the band to achieve their sound of racous guitar anthems that echo Ali Farka Touré, Jimi Hendrix and The Smiths.

MAIN HALL In the compositions of ‘masterof-inversion’ Dick Raaijmakers (1930-2013) nothing is what it seems. Even his early works were so radically innovative that they still are totally relevant today. In Pianoforte (1959) two piano players try their utmost to generate all possible sounds from a piano without touching the keys. This is done in synchrony with a soundtrack Raaijmakers himself produced 50 years earlier. In ‘Pianoforte’, present and past are embroiled in a mustsee musical shadow fight.

SATURDAY 00;00

DANS DANS SMALL HALL Belgian superband Dans Dans unites the powers of three seasoned musicians. B. Dockxs (Flying Horseman) F. Lyenn (Mark Lanegan band ) and S. Cassiers (Dez Mona) fuse their visions into a multilayered world where eruptive garage, grainy jazz, psychedelica, ecstatic noir soundtracks and spacey noise meet.

PRINS 27 Music collectives Oerknal and De Beren Gieren team up and instead of fusing their distinct sounds, they opt for the juxtaposition of their music. The result is two distinct, raw, and visceral musical styles side-by-side, creating a schizophrenic soundscape for the listener.

SATURDAY 00:15

ATARI TEENAGE RIOT MAIN HALL “Atari Teenage Riot is noise at its life-affirming and dramatised best” ATR was born early nineties out of excitement at the social and musical possibilities following the fall of the Berlin Wall. The result was revolutionary melting of breakbeat, dance, electronica, hip hop and punk that created an entirely new approach to expressing hopes and frustrations. The trio has proven to still be relevant, as the disruptive effect of seemingly chaotic rhythms and arbitrary noise, sidechained with nerve shredding hooks and bone crunching riffs, places these pioneers firmly in the centre of today’s era.

With a soaring voice that’s craggy and wounded Taylor conveys his music with compassion and heartfelt intensity to a fast growing fan base.

MOUSE ON MARS SMALL HALL Mouse on Mars is one of the few electronic bands to stand the test of time. Constantly reinventing themselves, they have taken electronica to new heights with a unique blend of sound annihilation, fragmented melodies and an impassioned hatred of conformity. A Mouse on Mars’ live show lets you experience their full spectrum: from hypnotic digital sound synthesis to glitch hymns and stoic rock beats: it’s all packed with extremely high and twisting energy levels that take the dancefloor on a rollercoaster ride.

SMALL HALL Having a strong basis in grainy krautrock, this Finnish four-piece produces a hypnotic and minimalistic motorik groove. K-X-P’s dark and pounding live shows tend to be improvisational, overwhelming and not something one forgets easily. K-X-P has shared stages with James Blake, Moon Duo, Woven Hand, Turzi, Zombie Zombie, Suuns, Iceage, Kurt Vile, Cluster and Konono N°1.

THE HARD WAY

SMALL HALL The Hard Way is the mammoth drum&bass, breakcore and hardcore collab between three legends in the extreme electronica field: Limewax, Bong-Ra and Thrasher. The trio creats a huge sound on stage as well as in the studio, reflecting their view on the current times: aggressive, nihilistic and completely ruthless. Armed with an arsenal of breakbeats, hardcore kicks, pounding guitar riffs and distorted vocals, The Hard Way captures the pure rawness of punk with the power of electronics. PRINS 27 An interactive audio/visual installation, introducing the ‘Magnetic Resonator Piano’ (MRP). The MRP is an electronically-augmented acoustic piano which uses a series of magnets combined with sensors to resonate, bend and torment the piano’s strings, modifying it into incredible new timbres. Visitors can engage with the MRP, creating their own individual sonic experience via a series of triggers, loops and samples.

PREFACE Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends, ladies and gentlemen, come inside, come inside. It is the eleventh edition of State-X New Forms or as they say in the south of the wonderful low countries: the fool’s edition. Another two days of discovering new sounds, collapsing musical continents and strange harmonies. A friday night filled with jazz, improvisations, world music, leftfield electronics and hip hop, followed by a decibels-filled saturday night in which we meet again with old friends who are on the brink of new releases and try to break a new world record in noise. On the other side of the spectrum we have some of the quietest music around, where melancholy is your guide. If you want to participate yourselves make sure to touch the keys of the Magnetic Field Installation or join in the dance of Noblesse’s Amos Ben-Tal. Alternatively feel free to indulge anonymously in the party that is going on the whole weekend, from the confettislinging of Rich Aucoin to the pentagrammik cokesniffing of The Hard Way. You may find yourself in another part of the world and you may ask yourself: “Well… How did I get here?” We may never pass this way again.

Enjoy, be part of State-X New Forms 2014.
