When we started this festival back in 2004 we never expected it would come to this: the tenth time State-X New Forms. Edition X is simultaneously a celebration of and a look back at the past as well as a fresh new start and a changing approach. During the first nine editions we brought you legendary musical performances of Aphex Twin, Sonic Youth, Circle, Lee Perry, Peter Greenaway, Zeitkratzer Orchestra and The Hague Philharmonic (Residentie Orkest), to name but a few that come to mind. We have always tried to combine music with other disciplines like theatre and visual arts. We will continue to do so, to which end we have started a collaboration with our friends of the Rewire Festival in a joint exposition. Make sure you visit the Gemak-building to witness this, as it is a vital part of our festivalprogram. Musically we thought we might help you a bit by clustering related artists on one night. The metal-, drone- and ambient-fans should check out our friday’s line-up, as well as afficionados of adventurous worldmusic should. If you’re more into neo-folk(tronica) and americana we have a great program-outline on saturday, where we also have our most ambitious project of this festival: the collaboration with one of the most talented emerging artists of the last years: The Child Of Lov. We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone involved to make this possible. It promises to be a great birthday party. On behalf of Paard van Troje, Haags Pop Centrum and State-X New Forms, Henk Koolen.

lisa king

Friday 13th + saturday 14th

London Based print designer Lisa King’s skills as an exquisite print creative have seen her work with a prestigious roll call of designers, from Boudicca and Diane Von Furstenberg to Calvin Klein and Armani. Her work is loved in the high-end fashion market, culminating in a commission to work on the centre piece dress for the Victoria and Albert museum’s Kylie Minogue: Image of a pop star exhibition in 2007. Lisa has also worked with the enigmatic Cole Williams (a.k.a.The Child Of Lov), to create an exclusive The child of lov experience shirt for state-x new forms, fusing his signature graphic style and her unique print sensibility. AMENRA Friday 13th

Dark Desolate Bleak Harrowing Majestic Destructive...Amenra approaches and lives metal with an intense sectic conviction. The Belgian group spreads their apocalyptic vision of a world that’s out of touch with its past, present & future, taking their adepts through a world of unseen mystique. Their ritualistic metal hymns existing of droning, surrealist melodies built out of repetitive guitar chords, alternated by gut-wrenching hauls will take the listener out of the here and now and transport him into Amenra’s church where black is the colour. The darkest color with more shades than one ever thought possible. Amenra puts heart and soul into every note, word and image, creating an all-consuming and overwhelming live performance.

BEATLAB

saturday 14th

For the past two years Beatlab has been the platform in The Hague to experiment with the newest beats and basssounds. A vivid mix of dubstep, glitch, progressive, trap and futurebeats has found a home on the Beatlab platform. Because of the lab’s fine nose for new sounds and upcoming artists, State-X New Forms invited Beatlab to host the foyer stage on Saturday.

Deadcrow

A healthy dose of dark trap with traces of triphop and some outright examples of hardstyle, hardcore, dubstep, soundscape and drum & bass influences from one of the youngest artists ever to perform at the State-x New Forms festival.

6

Filosofischestilte

Filosofische Stilte is most likely one of The Hague’s biggest upcoming beatmakers. He was first discovered by The Hague’s Antilounge Records and already performed on the 2011 edition of State-X New Forms. Blending varied sources as UK Garage, UK bass, hip hop, IDM and trap, his carreer has really taken off with gigs at festivals as The Great Escape and Reeperbahn. DJ Broadcast picked him out as one of the most promising artists of 2013, while webzines like Xlr8or are following him closely.

96wrld

96WRLD is the moniker of young electronic beat producer MiĹĄa Skalskis from Vilnius, Lithuania. He infuses his blend of playful, neon-coloured electronica and bass-heavy beats with just the just right amount of melody, acid-tinged synth bells and chopped vocals to make these rather complex compositions work wonders on the dancefloor.

7

GENERATE

Inspired by soul, moviesoundtracks, modern classical music, jazz, jungle and breaks, this young IDM producer creates deep bass-oriented rhythmic music. He debuted on the infamous Antilounge label.

Bombay Show pig Friday 13th

After starting out as a supposed one-and-done conservatory project, Dutch duo Bombay Show Pig has steadily sculpted their compact and crisp garage blueprint into a vibrant collage of catchy rock tunes. Formed by guitarist Mathias Janmaat and drummer Linda van Leeuwen, this band surprises many with their own view on indie music in the tradition of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, The Kills and Death From Above 1979. With an on stage synergy and chemistry the White’s would be jealous of.

8

DAKHABRAKHA Friday 13th

DakhaBrakha is a true cult phenomenon in European Folk music. This award-winning, theatrical quartet of multi-instrumentalist singers has been experimenting with Ukrainian folk melodies and rhythms, mixing genuine, ethnically specific material with minimalism. Out of these elements DhakhaBrakha creates wild and truely unforgettable music that is at once sacred and modern: natural folk music of the future.

DAUGHN GIBSON saturday 14th

American singer/songwriter Daughn Gibson (his name being a tribute to two of his heroes, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Don Gibson) is a former truck-driver that has a beautiful dark baritone voice. In his music he melts together traditional Americana with electronic loops and layers reminiscent of Burial and Demdike Stare.

Birth Of Joy Friday 13th

Influenced by psychedelica, blues and steaming rock&roll this trio takes you back to the old times of MC5 and The Doors. With a drummer that could be Keith Moons son, an organist that harasses his instrument to death and a singer/guitarist that seems to be the power version of Jim Morrison, this band is bound to catapult psychedelic sixties rock&roll back into our modern times.

9

Daylight Dodger

Friday 13th & saturday 14th Daylight Dodger creates a beautiful singersongwriter-like performance in an unconventional way: tube-radios, tapedecks and soundeffects are laid out in the audience to create three-dimensional lo-fi electric folkrock.

10

DEAN BLUNT saturday 14th Dean Blunt released records under his own name and together with Inga Copeland (as Hype Williams). In 2013 alone he has released two sets of songs: The Redeemer, a break-up album with a modern touch of soul music and Stone Island, a Russian-language only download. Strange, puzzling, but highly innovative.

DONSO Friday 13th

The future of African Beat orchestrated by Krazy Baldhead, producer for the influential dance music label Ed Banger. It is between Paris and Bamako that the sound of Donso grows, as the illegitimate son of the cosmic universe of Malian hunters and the down-to-earth world of insomniac electro music. After its first self-titled album published in 2010, Donso continued their journey, emphasizing live performance, scrappy rock and overdubs.

11

12

DOOM saturday 14th

MF (Metal Face) Doom is a key-player in alternative and underground hip hop, having worked together with Madlib (as Madvillain), Jneiro Jarel (as JJ Doom), Danger Mouse (as Dangerdoom) and others as well as releasing legendary albums himself under aliases as King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn. He also collaborated with Gorillaz and The Child Of Lov. State-X New Forms will witness one of his rare stage-performances.

Esmerine saturday 14th

Esmerine was co-founded ten years ago by percussionist Bruce Cawdron (Godpseed You! Black Emperor) and cellist Rebecca Foon (Thee Silver Mt. Zion) exploring a world of melodic percussion and celloharmonies, greyscale soundscapes and classical-folk rhythm. Nowadays the outfit spins a fine web of sparkling experimental noise – it’s fragile, tempestuous, pensive and sprawling – as they experiment with languid strains of clinical harmony, avante-garde themes in neo-classical music, electronica post-rock and folk music.

13

Eins Zwei & The Parallel Cinema saturday 14th

Eins Zwei & the Parallel Cinema makes different worlds come together in a vivid and colourful mix of indie rock and Bollywoodmusic. Up tempo drum and rockguitars go fluidly together with sitar and violins, bringing a western homage to the Indian Bollywood and Arthouse movieculture: The Parallel Cinema.

G▲RTM▲LEN Friday 13th

Fred & Toody saturday14th

For the past 35 years Fred and Toody Cole have been a mainstay with their bands The Rats, Range Rats, Zipper, Pierced Arrows and of course the legendary Dead Moon. The couple has recorded a dizzying amount of songs and cultivated a diehard cult following. Now as a duo, featuring songs written by Fred Cole from the past to present, the focus will be on vocal harmonies and lyrics celebrating their long life experience together and thier musical legacy. “Fred and Toody epitomize the true potential and purest meaning of straight, 14 no chaser rock-and-roll.” Eddie Vedder.

Combining Yoko Ono, Alec Empire, Aboriginal tribal elements and David Lynch soundtracks would a description of the music of the G∆RTM∆LEN duo. Their visual masked surreal performance is as important as their sound and can not be separated.

Geert Mul & Michel Banabila Friday13th

“Big Data Poetry” is an forty minute audio visual live performance combining three disciplines: sound, linguistics and moving image, thus visualising language as a database of cultural identity. The consonants and vowels of specific languages are stored, analyzed and re-combined with scientific data to create unique language-specific audio visual compositions. Big Data Poetry celebrates the diverse forms of cultural identity from across the globe.

I saw the Deep Friday 13th

Critics from Europe and the States found themselves dumbfounded by hearing ‘Astronavigation’ by I Saw The Deep. ‘This is some pretty good shit!’, A Distant Rumble cried out. ‘ The heavy riffs of Mastodon, the trance-inducing vocals of Alice in Chains, the mysticism of The Tea Party and the psychedelic sensibilities of early Pink Floyd’, stated Rock Music Critic. An overwhelming stoner and prog rock thrill trip, that’s I Saw The Deep.

GoodCopNaughtyCop Friday13th

Good cop / naughty cop consists of classical guitarist / bicycle repairman Zac Stibbs and composer / musician Sjoerd Leijten. Using technology in conjunction with acoustic instruments they make improvised electro acoustic music. Currently they use the speed of bicycle wheels and self designed wooden pedals to affect the sound of their guitars.

15

Legowelt, Orgue Electronique & Xosar (special joint live-set) Friday13th

Shame on you, State-X New Forms, you call yourself a The Hague-festival and yet it took you ten years to program Legowelt and Orgue Electronique, two of the most prolific electronic artists out of your hometown. The waiting is finally over, because for the first time Danny Wolfers (Legowelt) and Brian Schijf (Orgue Electronique) will be on the line-up for a very special event: joining forces with the super talented American-born artist Xosar. when we say it is a collaborative effort we do mean that literally as for this special occasion all three of them will be playing together in an unique and vibrant semi-hardware live formation. No separate sets, this is a true all-together-electronicwork-out: the first electro-supergroup the world has ever seen 16 and a premiere for the galaxy. The rest of the planet will look with envy at this, so make sure you are a witness.

17

Orchestra of Spheres saturday 14th

The ancient future funk from this New Zealand cult group takes the audience on a surreal and ecstatic road trip through their own hyper primal, fuzzed-out garden of Eden. The sound is an infectious brew concocted from primitive rhythms, quicksilver synths, intricate bass lines and psychedelic biscuit-tin guitar work. Chanted vocals bring a hypnotic, trance inducing element to many of the tracks, underlined by the other worldly, voodoo-like presentation on stage.

18

Meridian Brothers Friday 13th

This wonderfully bizarre ensemble offers a string quirky gems that have to be heard to be believed. A surrealistic world of tropical sounds, psychedelica, fairy tale sax, Farfisa-like organ, child-like vocals and minimal yet hypnotic and infectious dancegrooves that come together in twisted an ingeniously crafted songs. The Meridian Brothers have created their own disjointed, funny, silly and charming universe, somewhere beteen the universes of Penguin Cafe Orchestra and The Residents.

Machinist Friday 13th

Machinist / Zeno van den Broek works in a multidisciplinary approach on a synergy of the audial, the visual and the spatial. This is manifested in different forms of expression: album releases, performances, installations and paintings. Originally trained as an architect, the perspective of Zeno is focused on the immersive quality of spatiality in sound and vision.

Nick Catron Friday 13th Nick Catron is a young and upcoming Dutch DJ and producer who plays progressive house

NiCad + NEuE Friday 13th

19

If it’s up to NiCad and New European Ensemble, boundaries between music styles will be blown up tonight. don’t even think about trying to find A covering name for the music that they combine: the two The Hague based bands didn’t start playing together to invent a new genre. NiCad and NEuE found each other at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and decided to introduce the world with a new experience: a step into a borderless world of contemporary, live electronic music.

21

Rejjie Snow saturday 14th

Massive anticipation built up over the last six months as the undercurrent of the HipHop world awaited the official mixtape release from Rejjie Snow. This hugely-talented 19-year-old Irish rapper is being touted as the next star to shoot out of the Irish Emerald Isle. He’s already gaining a following in the U.K and spreading his rhymes slowly across the European continent. Being signed to Elton John’s record label and performing alongside King Krule, MF Doom and Kendrick Lamar, Mr. Snow has proven to be ready for the next level.

Santa Cruz Friday 13th

‘Like the final scene of a new rock opera, with Darth Vader waltzing over an organ, serenading his heroine addicted mistress. At least’, that’s how we tend to describe the sound of Santa Cruz, The Hague’s delight when it comes to experimental, dark-romantic psychedelic rock. Shredding guitars scrape against vocalist/drummer Guy Taveres’ characteristic voice, who’s lingering drums haul you down a mental frenzy. Signed to the infamous Motorwolf Label.

22

Richard Buckner

saturday 14th

Singer Songwriter Richard Buckner slowly paints his abstract music with vast, ominously serene arrangements that contradict the heavy, oaken-feel of the music. His voice has a deep grain with a silky finish, underlining the dark music, yet floating vulnerably high to let it breathe and give light to those lucky enough to hear it. A unique story by a unique musician who is slowly gaining cult status among Folk- and Americana fans.

stopcontact Friday 13th

Psychedelica, New Orleans voodoo, Electronic and P-Funk. Amsterdam based psychedelic rock trio Stopcontact brings an atypical approach to music and live performance. Their organbased-no-guitar sound comes from improvisations and a mashups ‘between the concrete and the abstract’.

Selvhenter saturday 14th

This all-female Danisch quintet converges extreme noise, free jazz and creative rock into a sound and energy that is greater than the sum of its parts. pumping polyrithic drumming (two drummers) interacts with distorted trombone, laying down the fundament for the sax and violin to move and create within. The result is an uncompromising, boundless energetic one that blends the aesthetics of experimental rock, the sophistication of improvised free jazz and the aggressiveness of punk, noise and metal into a grinding pulsating sonic drone.

24

THE CHILD OF LOV EXPERIENCE saturday 14th

After signing to Domino Records, working with the likes of Damon Albarn and DOOM, winning an NME Award, emerging from the shadows of anonymity, cancelling a summer festival tour, TCOL will now move to curating. He will take over the main hall of Paard van Troje on this Special State-X New Forms night to present what’s been called THE CHILD of LOV EXPERIENCE: a celebration of all collaborations, both musically and in other fields, he has been involved with over the past years.

25

A WORLD PREMIERE...

Having brought together a new band, dancers, visuals and even a choir, the child of lov’s debut album will be performed live for the first ever. Expect a full-on program with appearances by the people involved with The Child Of Lov’s debut-album (you may want to check out the liner-notes!), mysterious beatcreator Sun Patzer, rappers from Holland and abroad (the multi-talented Rejjie Snow, ladies and gentlemen!), musicians like Two Inch Punch and ConKwake and fashiondesignerfor-the-stars Lisa King. This will all take place in an immersive theatrical environment that will contain so many surprises that a regular visit to our website for news is recommended.

SUNN 0))) Friday 13th

The massive wave-pools Sunn O))) creates are precisely oscillating soundscapes that tap into complex compositional practices without ditching metal’s compelling visual aesthetic. The L.A./New York duo excavates and expands the genre, remapping its coÜrdinaties with the 26 lowest frequenties imaginable, in the process mutating its compositional scope: an insistent, visceral buzz transforms sludge drifts into chiropractic chords that strike like thunder cracks. Loud though rarely harsh, the sounds start low, intensifying incrementally until they’ve transformed the entire listening area into a dark chamber teeming with elegant sustain. Adding to the sensory overload of the Sunn O))) experience, the duo obscures themselves in clouds of thick fog, dressing in hooded robes, periodically thrusting guitars towards the sky...

27

The Orb Friday 13th

25th Year Anniversary Tour

The Orb is still as relevant as they were in the beginning of their career, in the meantime having progressed from ambient to electronic dub. Dr. Alex Paterson, Thomas Fehlmann and visual artist Gary Oldknow will travel through the ultraworld of 25 years The Orb, from the early ambient soundscapes to the recent dub-adventures with Lee “Scratch Perry. The performance at State-X New Forms is the only Dutch show of this special project and will prove to be spectacular.

Two Inch Punch saturday 14th

Two Inch Punch is one of Britain’s most promising producers. he crafted his own soothing brand of dubstep-tinged R&B reminiscent of The Weekend or perhaps James Blake having a vocal-pitching fit. Two Inch Punch transposes the melodic swoons and adhesive-like hooks of earlyNineties R&B seductively into our current musical landscape.

Xenia Rubinos

28 saturday 14th

This New York soulfull indie-diva uses her powerful voice to create beats and melodies to form odd yet infectiously danceable songs. Her sound grows from a wide palette of influences ranging from Caribbean rhythms and beat music to minimalism and indie rock all delivered with a soulful punk aura. Xenia’s ecstatic songs feature layered beats, crunchy keyboards, and driving syncopated rhythms. An oblique assemblage of uncommon percussion, powerhouse vocals and dance-til-you-drop energy might just make this the find of the year.

The Future’s Dust Friday 13th

This Dutch group creates dreamy pop music that floats in melancholic ambient surroundings.Like The xx, Bon iver and even James Blake they take you through dark yet comforting songs, and fill them with echoing drums, resonating basses, atmospheric guitars and dreamy synths. A solid core for already beautiful haunting songs.

Momentum - As art has to happen now In a society where live, real time and ‘always-on’ viewing are constantly increasing, our capacity to process impressions is changing. While we read alarming reports in the newspapers about our reduced attention spans and inability to concentrate, we see more images, listen to more music and, online, we read more than ever before. All the culture in the world is just a click away. In this super-inundation of information and possibilities, finding focus for visual art is a challenge. Biennials and festivals are tried-and-tested forms for reaching many people in a given time span. But how does one find their audience when they are smaller and have fewer resources? At GEMAK, various artists spend five weeks contributing to the search for creative dynamics and public involvement. Supported by the festival and its visitors, and inspired by the self-organizing potential of international protest movements and the DIY mentality of young generations in general, Momentum investigates possibilities for art as it needs to be today. Participating artists: Aditya Madayam, Ahmet Ögüt, berend Strik, CM von Hausswolff, Cevdet Erek, David Maljkovic, Giorgio Andreotta Calò, Haroon Mirza, Jonas Lund, Lyndsey Housden, Miranda Meijer, Nishiko, Roger Hiorns, Sarah van Sonsbeeck.
