The No. 2 Owens Express women’s basketball team is looking to clinch an outright OCCAC championship in today’s game against the Columbus State Cougars, who are looking to stay alive in the OCCAC title race as they are two games back with two to play.

Express Notes Looking To Clinch: With a win today, Owens would clinch an outright OCCAC championship. Thanks to clinching at least a share on Wednesday, they have now won three titles in a row and four over the past five years. With a win today, the team would also clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming district tournament. Carlisle’s Presence: In the Jan. 24 game, sophomore forward LaKayra Carlisle was out due to an injury. Averaging 9.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, she will look to make a difference in today’s game. Williams Rising: Freshman guard Courizma Williams is now second on the team in scoring during conference play at 11.5 PPG. Additionally, she averages a conference best 1.7 blocks per game and has started the past three games. Most Wins: With a win today, Owens would tie the 2012-13 and 1996-97 teams for the second most wins in a single season. The record of 29 is held by the 1997-98 team.
It will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams. Columbus State battled Owens until a late Owens run provided the margin in a three-point game. The Express will be looking to extend multiple streaks - a 27 game overall winning streak, a 42 game home regular season winning streak and a 20 game regular season conference winning streak. Should they win today, they would break the program’s 42 game home conference winning streak record.
Series History
In recent years, Owens and Columbus State have developed a rivalry. In the 21-year series history, though, Owens has won 36 of 41 matchups, including a 20-0 mark at home. The two teams have never met in postseason play, while Owens has two 11-game win streaks and one 10-game win streak over the history of the series. Head coach Mike Llanas is 18-3 against Columbus State.

Cougars Notes Three Point Threat: Kierstynn Myers made 6-for-10 from 3-point range in the team’s most recent win over Cincinnati State. She is the team’s second leading scorer at 10.6 PPG and is shooting a team-high 42.9 percent from 3-point range this year. Super Transfer: Bridget Geiger is averaging a team-high 13.3 PPG for Columbus State. The sophomore forward is a transfer from Edison Community College, and she is also the team’s second leading rebounder at 5.7 RPG. Rollins Rolling: Jaslynn Rollins, who had four points against Owens on Jan. 24, has scored in double figures in five straight games. She is averaging 13.6 PPG over that stretch, and she notched a season-high 17 points vs Cincinnati State on Wednesday. Dynamic Bailey: Erinn Bailey, a sophomore guard, averages 10.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game. In the Jan. 24 game vs Owens, she had 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists and seven steals.
