OTWO is about creating a platform for individuals to take responsibility and help our environment and perishing earth.

It makes the case for individual actions as the only solution. There is no magic wand, we must all take responsibility. We will work shoulder to shoulder with all agencies, action groups and others to achieve this aim. Corporations can also help this initiative. In our modern society, companies work as individuals, each have their policies and defend them to provide security of employment, stability for our country and in many cases, funding for charitable causes.

To help these organisations encourage change we have started a unique corporate subscriber scheme as part of our CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) range.

Each corporate subscription will be tailored to each company. In return for your contribution, you will receive copies of our limited edition version of the magazine (to be sold at newsagents). We will also include shelf files so that our subscribers can display these collectible editions to their employees and clients, thus proudly promoting your corporate responsibility pledge and helping to actively spread the word so that others can follow.

OTWO will also make a proud statement of your collaboration in each and every copy, we will also allow for the use of our special certificating logo on company marketing materials.

Trabajaremos hombro con hombro con todas las agencias, grupos de acción y otros para lograr este objetivo.

As a wife to my soul mate and mother of the two most amazing little boys, there is no better project than the one you are now holding in your hands. How better to fulfil our ambition to look after the next generation by doing our part to make the world a better place.

Over the past eighteen months or so, I have been touched by growing public concern over climate change. The problem has always been there, I have always been uncomfortable with it but it always seemed to be up to someone else to sort it out – our politicians, world organisations, pressure groups. In short anyone but me – I was too busy just trying to look after myself and my loved ones, I just didn’t have the time. Then I watched the amazing Greta Thunberg deliver her speech: ‘the disarming case to act

Durante los últimos dieciocho meses más o menos, me ha conmovido la creciente preocupación pública por el cambio climático. Este problema siempre ha estado ahí, siempre me ha incomodado, pero siempre me ha parecido que alguien más puede resolverlo: nuestros políticos, organizaciones mundiales, grupos de presión. En resumen, todo el mundo menos yo, estaba demasiada ocupada tratando de cuidarme a mí misma y a mis seres queridos, simplemente no tenía tiempo.

I realised that it was about each and every one of us, and that it is actually not that difficult to do. That far from being just the responsibility of politicians and others, it is actually we as individuals that can make these changes. I started adapting my life with my enthusiastic family – straight into zero plastic, strict recycling practices and anything else we could do to effect change, which then led to many conversations with likeminded people and organisations about our local and global concerns. I hope that by bringing a focus to these issues, as well as all of the positive things that can be done to lessen our environmental impact, will assist anyone who is thinking of changing their lifestyle to help our beautiful planet..... It’s the only one we have! As my mindset changed, I found all of these amazing and unseen places just on our doorstep. From nature reserves to ecological villages just hours away. It is crazy and so exciting to be able to share all of these magnificent places with you. With my amazing team of Ecowarriors, I offer you this magazine as a platform for change, for our survival even. They are the backbone of OTWO, without their help it would have just been another dream.

What it could become in the future, depends on all of us so I am really excited to hear your views and ideas. I hope you enjoy this magazine as much as we have all enjoyed putting it together.

su discurso en las charlas de TED. Fue un momento importante para mí. Me di cuenta de que se trataba de todos y cada uno de nosotros, y en realidad no es tan difícil de hacer. Que, lejos de ser la responsabilidad de los políticos y otros, en realidad, solo nosotros, como individuos, podemos solucionar esto.

Comencé a adaptar mi vida con mi entusiasta equipo familiar, directamente a Zero Plastic, prácticas estrictas de reciclaje y cualquier otra cosa que podamos hacer.

Esto ha derivado a muchas conversaciones con personas y organizaciones sobre nuestras preocupaciones locales y globales.

Espero que al centrarnos en esto y en todas las cosas positivas que se pueden hacer, ayudemos a cualquier persona que esté pensando en cambiar su estilo de vida para ayudar al medio ambiente. ¡Es el único que tenemos!

A medida que mi mentalidad cambió, encontré todos estos lugares increíbles y desconocidos justo a la vuelta de la esquina. Something more than oxygen

OTWO didn’t just happen. Different projects – different opportunities – different routes all seemingly going in different directions suddenly meet and explode together fusing into something different again. Creativity is something that shouldn’t be harnessed otherwise it simply expires. The team that has crafted the OTWO project are all from different backgrounds, all with different ideas but all concerned that somehow as human beings we are not doing things right.

The OTWO Team

That somehow we manage to confuse ourselves into destroying the very environment we live in and depend on for our very survival. In the process putting to risk the very survival of the future generations we hold so close to our hearts.

OTWO does not have the answers,. It isn’t about finding a magic wand to cure our ills.

OTWO is about sharing thoughts and ideas. Its about simplifying life, untangling the convoluted mess that threatens to suffocate the values we all pursue and our very home – the planet.

This is going to be an exciting and fulfilling journey, one which we have all to direct and drive through our contributions to the project.

OTWO will host all opinions, all initiatives and all ideas. Together we hope to help ourselves rediscover the beauty that we have around us, at our doorstep sometimes.

OTWO does not have a local mission. It has a global one. Opinions must come from afar and indeed OTWO will launch platforms in UK, Germany, Portugal and Japan within six months. In doing so, we will seek to discover and learn from each other.

Already the network of contributors we have put together, and the many more to come in the next editions, excite us. We hope to transmit this and share this with you. We don’t want readers, we want contributors. Connect with us however you can, send us your ideas, your views, your concerns. We will always share and together we will find a better way.

A better world, a better society can only happen if each one of us commit. Only we can make the difference, no Government in the world can solve this. Only each one of us that form our groups and societies can change the direction.

The steps are easy ones, little ones. If we all take these steps, we will acquire the dynamic of change that will ensure our success.

We will use advertisers to survive and ensure that this platform and debates succeeds and delivers. To them we promise that in OTWO you will find partners in developing good eco friendly businesses. A creative team like no other that will work tirelessly with you.

OTWO will not fear failure, come with us and let’s fix the mess. We promise an exciting, fulfilling experience you will enjoy and be proud of.

Algo más que el oxígeno

OTWO no nace de una idea. Diferentes proyectos, diferentes oportunidades, diferentes rutas que parecen ir en diferentes direcciones, de repente se encuentran y explotan juntas fusionándose en algo diferente de nuevo.

La creatividad es algo que no debe ser controlada, de lo contrario simplemente caduca. El equipo que ha creado el proyecto OTWO son todos de diferentes orígenes, todos con ideas diferentes pero todos preocupados de que, de alguna manera, como seres humanos no estamos haciendo las cosas bien.

Que de alguna manera logramos confundirnos con la destrucción del entorno en el que vivimos y del que dependemos para nuestra supervivencia. En el proceso que pone en riesgo la supervivencia misma de las generaciones futuras que llevamos tan cerca de nuestros corazones.

OTWO no tiene las respuestas. No se trata de encontrar una varita mágica para curar nuestros males.

OTWO se trata de compartir pensamientos e ideas. Se trata de simplificar la vida, desenredar el enredo complicado que amenaza con asfixiar los valores que todos perseguimos y nuestro propio hogar: el planeta.

Este será un viaje emocionante y satisfactorio, uno que todos debemos dirigir e impulsar a través de nuestras contribuciones al proyecto.

OTWO albergará todas las opiniones, todas las iniciativas y todas las ideas. Juntos esperamos ayudarnos a redescubrir la belleza que tenemos a nuestro alrededor, a veces en nuestra puerta.

Si todos tomamos estos pasos, adquiriremos la dinámica de cambio que garantizará nuestro éxito.

REFINERY BLAZE

A large fire broke out on 25th June 2019 inside a warehouse operated by Indorama Ventures, a global plastic manufacturer based within the CEPSA refinery complex, causing alarm and further concern for the environmental and health impact the petrochemical plant poses on the Campo de Gibraltar.

At around 15:30 in the afternoon thick black smoke could be seen billowing over the Campo, with residents on both sides of the border advised to stay indoors and close all windows due to fears that the fumes may be harmful. After several hours Indorama advised that ‘the smoke generated [was] not toxic’ and that the area was safe.

Fortunately, this incident was not as disastrous as it could have been. Due to the plants location it has rightfully been an issue of contention for many years, with environmental campaigners continually calling for tighter controls on, and even the removal of, the refinery.

The area has some of the worst air quality on the planet, Gibraltar ranks as the 4th most polluted area of the UK and Cadiz province has the worst air quality in Spain.

Results of air samples have been regularly reported to EU institutions but no real action has been taken. With mounting health concerns and the urgent need to tackle climate change, more has to be done to hold these industries accountable.

Incendio en refinería

Se produjo un gran incendio el 25 de junio de 2019 dentro de un almacén gestionado por Indorama Ventures, un fabricante mundial de plásticos en el complejo de refinería CEPSA, causando alarma y una gran preocupación por el impacto ambiental y sanitario que esta planta petroquímica representa en el Campo de Gibraltar.

Alrededor de las 15:30 de la tarde, se podía ver humo negro y espeso sobre la comarca, y los residentes de ambos lados de la frontera avisados de permanecer en el interior y cerrar todas las ventanas debido al temor de que los humos pudieran ser dañinos. Después de varias horas, Indorama informó que “el humo generado no era tóxico” y que el área era segura.

Afortunadamente, este incidente no fue tan desastroso como podría haber sido. Debido a la ubicación de la planta, ha sido legítimamente un tema de disputa durante muchos años, ya que los activistas ambientales pidieron controles más estrictos e incluso la eliminación de la refinería.

El área tiene una de las peores calidades de aire en el planeta, Gibraltar se ubica como la cuarta área más contaminada del Reino Unido y la provincia de Cádiz tiene la peor calidad de aire en España.

Los resultados de las muestras de aire se han informado regularmente a las instituciones de la UE, pero no se han tomado medidas reales. Con la creciente preocupación por la salud y la necesidad urgente de abordar el cambio climático, se debe hacer más para que estas industrias se hagan responsables.

GLASTONBURY SAYS NO TO PLASTIC

The hundreds of thousands that attended Glastonbury 2019 have exceeded all expectations and successfully took to the responsibility of bringing their own reusable flasks and bottles. This year’s event was its greenest ever by prohibiting the sale of single-use plastic bottles for the first time. Despite the heat wave, which consequently caused longer than expected queue’s to access water points, the festivals attendees have shown that in the short, medium and long term, change is possible.

In 2017, festival goers used 1.3 million plastic bottles, highlighting the ecological impact the five day music festival has on the environment.

Previously, the festival has also banned the use of single-use plastic cutlery, cups, plates and straws.

Glastonbury dice no al plástico

Los asistentes al festival de Glastonbury han cumplido las expectativas y se han echado a la espalda la responsabilidad de llevar cada uno su envase reutilizable. La cita se ha convertido en la más ecológica y limpia al prohibir la venta de botellas de agua de un solo uso. A pesar de la ola de calor y de la incomodidad de las colas los asistentes al festival han demostrado que a corto, medio y largo plazo, el cambio es posible.

Durante la cita de 2017, los asistentes al festival utilizaron 1,3 millones de botellas de plástico, formando parte del duro impacto ecológico que producen cinco días del festival musical.

Con anterioridad, el festival también prohibió el uso de cubiertos, vasos, platos y sorbetes de plástico de un solo uso.

JAPAN: PIONEERS IN METAL RECYCLING

New recycling laws in Japan are leading the way in metal recycling. Their lack of natural resources has led them to source metals from “junk” and old appliances to use for the production of new products with the aim of becoming self-sufficient.

The new law requires Japanese manufacturers to remove unwanted appliances and electronic devices to then reuse for new production. Current regulations also impose an additional tax to new appliances that, together with government subsidies, is then allocated to recycling plants. With items such as televisions, computers and dishwashers all being recycled, Japan is now managing to reuse 98% of its metal waste. One of their major goals is to set an example to the world during the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics,

where they intend to forge the Olympic medals from recovered metals.

Japón en la vanguardia del reciclaje del metal

Las leyes de reciclaje en el país nipón están liderando el sector del metal. La falta de recursos naturales les ha llevado a encontrar una fuente de material para la producción en la “chatarra” para conseguir ser más autosuficientes.

La ley que aplica a cada uno de los fabricantes japoneses les obliga a retirar los electrodomésticos y aparatos electrónicos bien para reciclarlos bien para destruirlos. La normativa vigente impone un impuesto adicional que se unen a las subvenciones gubernamentales, cuyos montantes monetarios se destinan a las plantas de reciclaje. Con el reciclaje de televisores, ordenadores, lavavajillas, etc los japoneses consiguen reutilizar el 98% de sus residuos metálicos. Todo un récord.

Un objetivo de la administración es dar ejemplo al mundo en las próximas Olimpiadas de Tokio 2020, donde pretenden que las medallas olímpicas sean fabricadas con metales recuperados.

FUTURE SOUNDS: ELECTRIC CARS TO INCLUDE ARTIFICIAL NOISE

A new EU rule came into effect this month that requires electric vehicles to feature a noise emitting device to ensure pedestrian safety.

Concerns have previously been raised that low-emission cars are too quiet to hear as they approach, putting pedestrians and cyclists at risk. Charities, such as Guide Dogs in the UK also complained that these cars were most likely to affect those who are hard of hearing or those who are visually impaired.

All new four-wheel electric vehicles will now be fitted with this device, which will produce a sound similar to that of a traditional petrol engine.

Este mes entró una nueva norma de la UE que exige que los vehículos eléctricos cuenten con un dispositivo emisor de ruido para garantizar la seguridad de los peatones.

Previamente se ha expresado la preocupación de que los autos con bajas emisiones son demasiado silenciosos para escucharlos cuando se acercan, y ponen en riesgo a los peatones y ciclistas. Las organizaciones benéficas, como Guide Dogs en el Reino Unido, también se quejaron de que estos coches tenían más probabilidades de afectar a las personas con problemas de audición y con discapacidad visual.

ECODESIGN

It now seems that large corporations have discovered a circular and sustainable economic model and are promoting a ten-billion euro initiative which will span over the next five years. The EIB (European Investment Bank) is coordinating with national development banks and institutions in Poland, France, Italy, Spain and Germany with the aims to boost efficiency in their use of resources, promote innovation and boost the concept of circularity in all economic sectors.

In addition, JICE (Joint Initiative on Circular Economy) will manage the development of innovative proposals for public and private infrastructures, as well as providing loans, capital investments and project guarantees.

These interventions aim to encourage the reduction and recycling of waste at source, during the design and production process and prior to their commercialisation. In the hopes that this reuse, repair and conversion initiative, will lead to previous models becoming obsolete.

ECODISEÑO

Ahora parecen que las grandes corporaciones han descubierto la economía circular y sostenible al promover una iniciativa de diez mil millones de euros durante los próximos cinco años. El BEI (Banco Europeo de Inversiones) coordinando instituciones y bancos nacionales de fomento de Polonia, Francia, Italia, España y Alemania se proponen impulsar la eficiencia en el uso de los recursos, promover la innovación y dinamizar el concepto de circularidad en todos los sectores económicos.

Además la ICEC (Iniciativa Conjunta para la Economía Circular) gestionará el desarrollo de propuestas innovadoras para las infraestructuras públicas y privadas, junto con la activación de préstamos, inversiones de capital y garantías a proyectos.

Con estas intervenciones se pretenderá una optimización en la reducción y reciclajes de los residuos en origen, durante el proceso de diseño o producción y antes de su comercialización. Así como la reutilización, reparación o conversión, nos indican que llegan malos tiempos para la obsolescencia programada.

Parents For Future Gibraltar

Padres para el futuro Gibraltar Marcha del Cambio Climático / 20 de Septiembre 2019 / 17:00 . Casemates Square

Since the announcement of a global Parents for Future Worldwide Climate strike was made, the Environmental Safety Group and The Nautilus Project met up to discuss the coordination of a supporting action in Gibraltar.

The ESG and TNP will be coordinating a Climate Change Strike on the 20th September 2019, in support of the global protest “Parents For Future”.

The strike will add Gibraltar’s participation to the worldwide initiative, which currently has 34 groups from 16 countries across 4 continents.

A petition has been launched which will be presented to the HM Government of Gibraltar at the end of the march detailing issues which need to be urgently tackled, if the Climate Emergency Pledge is to be honored.

The petition now has the backing of other NGOs including the GONHS, Gibraltar Heritage Trust, Sustainable Gibraltar and Pollution Watch.

It is hoped there will be strong public support for a march that is calling for action on the biggest challenge facing humanity today.

Desde el anuncio de una huelga global para el cambio climático mundial de Padres para el Futuro, el Environmental Safety Group y el Nautilus Project se reunieron para discutir la coordinación de una acción de apoyo en Gibraltar.

El ESG y el TNP coordinarán una huelga sobre el cambio climático el 20 de septiembre 2019, en apoyo de la protesta mundial “Padres para el futuro”.

La huelga contará con la participación de Gibraltar a la iniciativa mundial, que actualmente cuenta con 34 grupos de 16 países en 4 continentes.

Se ha lanzado una petición que se presentará al HM Gobierno de Gibraltar al final de la marcha en la que se detallarán los temas que deben abordarse con urgencia, para que se cumpla el compromiso de emergencia climática.

La petición ahora cuenta con el respaldo de otras organizaciones, como GONHS, Gibraltar Heritage Trust, Sustainable Gibraltar y Pollution Watch.

Se espera que haya un fuerte apoyo público para una marcha que exhorta a actuar en el desafío más grande que enfrenta la humanidad hoy en día.

Brian Kendall, from a little village in Wiltshire, an old friend, now gone, used to do beautiful paintings of flowers and ballerinas and ornaments made out of wrought iron. He made us this painting of a bunch of flowers picked from his own garden.

My hubby admiring such skillful work, told Brian that he would never be able to do anything like his works of art. “Have you ever tried? Then, how do you know it?” Brian replied with a wink and a nudge. That was so true. No, my husband never got to do any artistic works of art, but he has tried different skills since and has become a very good carpenter, plumber, a so-so electrician…an overall excellent handyman to have around the house.

I loved to sit next to my granny Lucy watching her crochet. She would follow no pattern, she had all kinds of different stitches and patterns in her head. The hook swiftly responding to her agile wrist as if it was her sixth finger, twisting and twining the fine white thread into a lovely mesh. She was also able to transform her yarn into wonderful, imaginative and useful objects, like a toothbrush holder in the form of a dress with little front pockets and a toilet roll holder in the form of a top hat, with trims and ribbons to match the colour scheme of your own bathroom. She would ask me if I wanted to try, but I never thought I could do it. “Go on, try doing a chain, it is easy, just follow what I do”, she would say, but I still thought I couldn’t …because I never tried…I just watched. But I really wanted to do it, and now, decades later, I wish she could see all the things I have crocheted. Although none are as perfect as hers, I think she would be proud of my work. Brian Kendall and Granny Lucy lived in a world where people would make their own things instead of buying them readymade. They may have been impressed in their later years by the increasing articles constantly comercialised as necessities. But they had developed skills some of us nowadays only dream of acquiring. However, unless we try we won’t know whether we can do them or not. I never thought I could crochet, bake my own bread or make my own soaps, creams and beauty products. Now I have my own little space which I call my Crafts Work Shop where “every day is another chance to make my dream come true” How about you?

El título hace referencia a la portada del libro que utilizo para guardar mis recetas de jabón. Me parece que define muy bien cómo podemos hacer a diario un balance con aquellas cosas que realmente marcan la diferencia en nuestra vida. Brian Kendall, un viejo amigo de un pequeño pueblo en Wiltshire, solía hacer hermosos cuadros de flores, bailarinas y otros ornamentos con hierro forjado. Esta pintura de un ramo de flores recogidas en su propio jardín, fue un regalo suyo. Mi esposo —al admirar un trabajo tan hábil— le comentó a Brian que para él, sería muy complicado hacer algo con tanto arte. Brian le respondió, mientras le hacía un guiño y le hacía un gesto cariñoso con el codo: “¿Lo has intentado alguna vez? Si no es así, ¿cómo puedes saberlo?”. Desde entonces, mi esposo, apesar de que nunca ha conseguido hacer una obra de arte, lo ha intentado. Se ha embarcado probando varias habilidades y se ha convertido en un buen carpintero, fontanero, electricista... un manitas que todos queremos tener en casa.

Particularmente, me encantaba sentarme junto a mi abuela Lucy y la observaba mientras hacía crochet. Ella no seguía ningún patrón, tenía todos los patrones y puntos para trabajar en su cabeza mientras el gancho respondía rápidamente a su ágil muñeca como si se tratase de un sexto dedo, retorciendo y entrelazando el fino hilo blanco para trazar una encantadora malla. Mi abuela, también fue capaz de transformar su hilo en objetos maravillosos, imaginativos y útiles. Desde un soporte para cepillos de dientes en forma de vestido con pequeños bolsillos delanteros a un portarrollos de papel higiénico en forma de sombrero de copa, con adornos y cintas para combinar con el estilo de color de tu propio baño. Ella me preguntaba si quería intentarlo, pero siempre pensé que no podría hacerlo. Mi abuela insistía, “vamos, intenta hacer una cadena. Es fácil, solo sigue lo que hago”, pero seguía viéndolo como un imposible. Nunca lo intenté, solo... observaba, aunque realmente quería hacerlo. Hoy en día, décadas más tarde, desearía que mi abuela pudiese ver todos los trabajos que he realizado a ganchillo. Ninguno es tan perfecto como los suyos pero se que estaría orgullosa de mi trabajo. Brian Kendall y Granny Lucy, vivían en un mundo —en un momento de nuestra historia— en el que las cosas eran normalmente confeccionadas en lugar de ir directamente a comprarlas. Incluso es posible, que en sus últimos años se quedarán impresionados por el aumento de artículos comercializados como necesidades, como algo habitual y constante. Mientras, nuestros familiares y amigos de décadas anteriores, desarrollaban habilidades que algunos de nosotros hoy en día solo soñamos con adquirir pero, a menos que lo intentemos, nunca sabremos si también contamos con esa facilidad o al menos con esfuerzo, lograrlo. En mi caso, nunca pensé que podría hacer crochet, mi propio pan, mis propios jabones, cremas o productos de belleza. En cambio ahora, tengo mi propio espacio que, aunque pequeño, lo llamo El Taller de Artesanía, donde, como recoge mi titular y mi libreta de trabajo: “cada día es otra oportunidad para hacer realidad mi sueño”. ¿Qué hay de ti?

Our love of nature and the ability to take to others the chance to enjoy all it has to offer in a sustainable way is one of the things that led us to contribute to this magazine. The wealth of experience our partners and their teams have has allowed us to offer several different types of activities; Adventures, School Adventure and Multi-adventure trips.

Fun, play and the beauty of nature all form a part of our ‘School Adventures’, with these elements coming together to form engaging educational activities. With the input of teachers, we have designed different programmes which are then adapted to suit the school year, age and physical level of the students. You can also choose between single day adventures or camping trips over several days. We oversee the entire educational process from beginning to end. Before the trip we discuss the objectives the educational centre aims to achieve for their students, we then adapt and customise the activities according to the content requested, and finally we follow up and evaluate each trip with the attendees and provide photos and videos of the trip to each group.

El amor y el disfrute de la naturaleza en un modo sostenible es lo que nos lleva a editar esta revista. La seguridad y la experiencia de nuestros colaboradores y sus equipos en todo lo relacionado con el turismo activo, nos permiten ofrecer varios tipos de actividades: Aventuras Escolares, Multiaventuras y Viajes de Aventuras. Con “Aventuras Escolares”, la diversión, el juego y la belleza de la naturaleza son los vehículos que usamos para desarrollar las actividades didácticas; en coordinación con los docentes diseñamos programas que apoyan los diferentes contenidos, todos personalizados por cada centro, adaptados tanto al ciclo escolar, al nivel físico o la edad del alumnado. Our ‘Multi-Adventure’ trips our undoubtedly the stars of our packages, offering a wide range of activities in different locations for all ages and fitness levels. Nosha’s has been a dream of owner Yvette since a young age. After suffering a terrible accident when she was a little girl, forcing her to eat through a straw for months, her father lovingly nicknamed her ‘Nosha’. Yvette and her father, who was a chef, had always talked about opening a restaurant together, but unfortunately he passed away before they could make that dream a reality.

In 2014, Yvette received some more heart-breaking news. Her brother, who she had always been very close to, was diagnosed with cancer. Two days later she saw an ad for a small premises and not long after Nosha’s was born. It was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream, but mostly she was motivated by her brother, wanting to provide him with a familiar and comfortable place to go to everyday that would allow him to continue socialising with others.

Initially the food was standard lunchtime fair, but after spending a lot of time researching healthy diets for cancer sufferer’s she decided to start moving towards a healthier menu.

Sadly, he passed away two years ago, but Yvette has continued to provide nutritious food for others with specific dietary needs. Yvette and her partner

prepare a variety of fresh meals on the premises each day, offering low salt and low fat meals as well as vegetarian, gluten and lactose free options, that are tasty as well as nourishing. Speaking to Yvette, you can immediately see that she has poured a lot of heart and passion into Nosha’s and her food is lovingly prepared with her family always in mind.

They have been so popular that over the past few years they have even catered for some of the artists who have performed at the Gibraltar Music Festival.

Some of their more popular meals are her aubergine bake, filled baked sweet potatoes, meatballs, cheese and spinach pastries and baked potato omelette.

On top of providing healthy lunches for their customers, they are also doing their bit to help the environment by reducing their plastic waste.

Their food containers are made of sugar cane, their cutlery is bamboo and even their soup containers are plant based, setting an amazing example for other similar businesses.

Nosha’s, era el sueño de su propietaria Yvette, desde temprana edad. Yvette, perdió a su hermano hace un par de años, pero ha continuado proporcionando alimentos nutritivos para otros con necesidades dietéticas específicas. Yvette y su pareja preparan a diario, con pro-

ductos frescos, una variedad de comidas bajas en sal y bajas en grasa, incluso, opciones vegetarianas, sin gluten y sin lactosa, que son sabrosas y nutritivas. Hablando con Yvette, puedes ver de inmediato que ha vertido mucho corazón y pasión en Nosha’s y que su comida está preparada con mucho cariño, siempre pensando en su familia

El local es tan popular, que en los últimos años incluso han atendido a algunos de los artistas que han actuado en el Festival de Música de Gibraltar.

Algunas de sus comidas más exitosas son el horneado de berenjena, batatas rellenas, albóndigas, queso, tarta de espinacas y tortilla de patatas al horno.

Además de brindar almuerzos saludables a sus clientes, Yvette hace lo posible por colaborar con el cuidado del medio ambiente, reduciendo el plástico y sus desechos. Sus recipientes de comida están hechos de caña de azúcar, sus cubiertos son de bambú y sus recipientes de sopa están hechos de plantas. Todo un ejemplo para empresas similares. Parque Natural Bahía de Cádiz: mucho por ver, mucho por descubrir.

Bahia de Cadiz Natural Park

The Bahia de Cadiz Natural Park is a magical place. Initially unassuming, this natural park reveals itself over time to those who are seeking a unique experience.

It is a place of ebb and flow, where unrelenting semidiurnal tides allow the daily embrace of the land and sea, creating the largest salt marsh in Spain. These conditions have created a unique landscape that is especially attractive to many different types of birds. When the tide recedes, it reveals hundreds of metres of muddy plains, teeming with small invertebrates that provide food to an endless number of waders. When the tide rises, young fish come to the shores of the marshes looking for shelter and food, which in turn encourages the arrival of fishing birds. Lastly, the growth of large algae blooms can be found in the muddy intertidal areas of the marshes, the preferred food of large groups of Anatidae. Up to 90,000 birds from varying species come to feed, breed or rest in the Bay of Cadiz every year.

This ever-changing environment, where the land is repeatedly submerged and then exposed, is also home to a diverse and unique range of flora and fauna, whose ability to adapt to the sun, wind, mud and salt has made them the great survivors of this extreme ecosystem.

The marshes allow visitors to take part in several different activities, from hiking, to exploring

the wetlands by kayak or observing the local shell-fishing. Visitors can also enjoy sprawling white sand beaches, perfect for practicing water sports or simply to bathe in the crystalline waters of the Atlantic. However, the marshes are not the only notable habitat in the area, close by another unique ecosystem can be found, Las Salinas (salt flats).

The salt flats are classified as Wetlands of High Ecological Interest due to their significance as a nesting, resting and feeding area for birds and for the ecological relationship they form between the natural reserve and adjoining areas. They are an ideal place for bird watching and their unique landscape, colours and architecture, along with the local people, means that visitors will have plenty to enjoy. They are also of exceptional ethnographic interest since they house the last vestiges of a thousand-year-old salt production culture. In the Bahia de Cadiz Natural Park, you can still see the old salt houses and tide mills that have stoically survived and offer a glimpse in to the past.

Atlantida Medio Ambiente is the company that currently manages the Bahia de Cadiz Natural Park Visitor Centre and are dedicated to providing a more sustainable tourism model. This is the best point to start your visit and to immerse yourself fully into this wonderful natural area and to experience all the culture it has to offer.

El Parque Natural Bahía de Cádiz es un lugar mágico. Lejos de exuberancias, este Parque Natural se abre poco a poco ante esos turistas que buscan algo distinto.

Es un lugar de encuentro y de paso, donde la ausencia de relieve y un régimen semidiurno de mareas permiten que tierra y mar, en su abrazo cotidiano, compongan la mayor marisma salada de España. Este hecho se traduce en un fenómeno único y de gran interés para las aves: al retirarse la marea, deja al descubierto cientos de metros de planicies fangosas, cargadas de pequeños invertebrados que sirven de alimento a un sinfín de aves limícolas. Al subir la marea, montones de alevines de peces se acercan a los bordes de la marisma buscando cobijo y alimento, propiciando la llegada, esta vez, de las aves pescadoras. Para completar la escena, crecen en estos fangos y fondos del intermareal, prolijas comunidades de algas que son alimento preferido de un nutrido grupo de anátidas. Hasta 90.000 aves de muy diversas especies vienen a alimentarse, reproducirse o descansar a la Bahía de Cádiz cada año.

Ya se puede imaginar el visitante que, en esta transición de espacios ora cubiertos ora descubiertos de agua, se amontona también una fantástica y rara diversidad de especies de flora y fauna, cuyas adaptaciones al sol, al viento, al fango y a la sal los convierten en los grandes supervivientes de estos ecosistemas extremos. Observarlos es detener el tiempo.

Además de las marismas en las que practicar senderismo, penetrar como un explorador montado en kayac u observar la típica actividad del marisqueo, y de extensas playas de arena rubia, perfectas para practicar deportes de viento o disfrutar del baño en las aguas cristalinas del atlántico más manso, encontramos otro ecosistema casi único en el mundo: las salinas.

Las salinas están catalogadas como Zonas Húmedas de Elevado Interés Ecológico (B1) por su importancia como zonas prioritarias para la nidificación, reposo y alimentación de aves y su función amortiguadora entre las zonas de reserva y las áreas colindantes. Son un lugar idóneo para completar la observación de avifauna con una visita que no dejará indiferente a nadie, ya sea por su arquitectura, su singular paisaje y colorido, su trazado o sus gentes. Poseen un excepcional interés etnográfico ya que albergan los últimos vestigios de una cultura salinera milenaria. How long have you been involved with the environment? Where did you start off your career?

I came to be very aware of nature from a very early age thanks to my great aunt. I grew up with stories of her childhood living around animals and nature. I started noticing flowers and birds around me. The swifts, starlings and sparrows. Living in Irish Town i also has swallows nesting in my patio, i became very aware of nature.

While at school I joined a small group lead by Ernest Garcia who took us up the rock bird watching. I spent most of my teens’ almost on a daily basis going up the rock to watch the migrations of the birds of prey in the summer.

In that time from a purely observational interest in nature I also got to learn about the problems nature faces which gradually steered to feeling responsible of preserving it for the future, leading to form the Ornithological Group of Gibraltar Society in 1976 before going off to study Botany and Zoology in UK.

What is the biggest environmental campaign you have been involved in?

It goes back to 1974 again in my teens, I was very

involved in the Scouts. My father was the commissioner in the scouts, he’d gone to the World Scout Conference in Nairobi and came back with a first International Scout Movement to take up Nature and Environment Conservation as one of its core aims.

So we run the Scout Conservation Campaign. This included a lot of material in the media. We approached a couple of shops in Main Street with displays on windows, press releases and activity within the scouts. It was a big campaign and kick started the conservation movement in Gibraltar.

I was also involved in a tree planting campaign in the early 80’s. We planted over 100 trees and can say there are still around 20 or 30 that have survived from that time.

I have been involved in campaigning all my life. One of the big campaigns wasn’t based in Gibraltar. It was to ensure that the Natural History Society in Gibraltar became a full partner of Bird Life International, an international body that connects all bird conservation organizations. Objections from Spain lead us to run añadir us run a campaign, attend meetings and eventually got accepted which was a bit of a dabble in the political world.

What would you say is the greatest environmental achievement Gibraltar has implemented in the last couple of years?

It is the increased awareness. I remember giving a talk on Climate Change in the 80’s in John Macintosh Hall, about 20 people attended and nobody knew what I was talking about. Climate change has been happening ever since the Industrial Revolution in the 1800’s, awareness is decades old but hasn’t been recognized until recently.

The way society has changed; using less fuel, electricity, treasuring our green areas and awareness of single use plastic, I think these are all achievements. The international media and internet has done a lot, but I think that one of the things that has helped develop awareness in Gibraltar is the fact that there is a minister for the environment that genuinely believes, who is receptive, and who has worked with the support of his colleagues and Chief Minister in making steps. When people find that you listen, people will open up and feel empowered in making a difference so I like to claim a little bit of the merit in the change that we can see in Gibraltar. Some people now come up to me claiming that I am not doing enough and I always say, I will never do enough for the environment. Change has to be done in a responsible way in order to not risk going too fast. Even though it is a crisis, sometimes going too fast without people understanding and bringing people with you, you risk falling flat on your face, and people react against it. We all have to go on this together.

Are their plans to expand Gibraltar’s recycling facilities?

Recycling has been a victim of it’s own success. People forget that when I became a minister in December 2011 you could only recycle paper and cardboard. You couldn’t recycle plastic, tetra brick, glass or oil, this I introduced in early 2012 and was transformational. People have responded positively, putting pressure on the system. As figures increase annually we have a few challenges ahead. We still have to take our recycling to Spain, we are trying to deal with it a bit locally by trying to segregate it better. We will provide more bins, unfortunately at times the bins are not properly used. I have resisted

creating legislation to make it obligatory to use the correct bins as I think the community is responding well. I like to work by persuasion and encouragement but obviously the law is there as a back up.

How do you think Brexit will impact Gibraltar’s Environmental policies and plans?

I think Brexit is bad, I believe in the European Vision. The EU wasn’t working as it could and should but I believe in changing things from within. I think the whole issue is a mistake, which will be bad for UK and Gibraltar although we are working hard to minimize the negative effect.

Specifically for the environment, we will encounter challenges and we will work to deal with those. We have contingency plans that have been developed and are developing further. As environmental laws are concerned the government has committed publically on many occasions that we will not dilute our Environmental standards. The EU has very good Environmental standards and we will keep to them. Where we will differ is when our standards will be better and not worse so air quality, water quality and nature conservation will be up there with the best, that is an absolute commitment.

Could you foresee a day where Gibraltar could be carbon neutral? Or even a day where Gibraltar can be powered solely by renewable energies?

I think we can be carbon neutral; I am committed to it.

Last week we passed the Climate Change Act, this commits us to carbon neutrality by 2045.

The Climate Change Emergency Motion passed by parliament commits us to carbon neutrality by 2030.

I don’t have a problem with having two targets. One being statutory by law. the other being better than that requirement.

Its achievable, I think in the early years we will have to achieve this by offsetting some of our carbon by buying carbon credits or investing in tree planting outside Gibraltar, that’s one option we are looking into, not my preferred option, but done in some parts of the world.

I believe we can achieve our target of 20% reduction by initially using solar energy. We are looking into marine current and wind energy. Taking this

into account I think it is possible to achieve 100% in Gibraltar however would require quite a bit of investment, we are exploring all those possibilities very actively.

In your opinion what can the local community do to help the climate crisis we are in and reduce their carbon footprint?

They are doing a lot already. The amount of carbon emissions has dropped from 2013 – 2018 by 21%. That’s a lot of carbon. It can depend on the weather, if not too cold or too warm we don’t tend to switch on air conditioners or heating and therefore improves. People have now switched to energy efficiency lighting like LED’s. Gibraltar’s street lighting, government buildings, everything we build, the lighting is LED. People are more aware so they tend to switch off more; it makes a big difference.

There is more solar power popping up. Some estates are producing their own energy for heating from solar power and I think more estates should do that. Saving electricity and water, water uses a lot of power being produced by reverse osmosis.

Encouraging the use of micro renewables with solar panels in your own roof. The law has changed so you can feed extra energy to the grid and get a credit at the end of the year. All these changes do make a difference and not just at home but businesses. There is a big corporate responsibility and businesses are now increasingly aware and developing green programs reducing their carbon footprints on a daily basis.

As a day-to-day change people could try walking or cycling more. Electric cars, even hybrid cars make a huge difference, these are steps in the right direction. The beauty of electric cars, is that not only does it reduce the carbon footprint but improves air quality within the urban area. The biggest pollution problem in our urban area is clearly traffic where it used to be power generation.

Eating less meat, the meat industry consumes a lot of energy and produces a lot of methane and carbon even replaces natural woodland areas. That would have an impact beyond our shores. Perhaps trying meat free days a week, which we try and do at home.

Transport mode and diet are two ways in which we can make a huge difference.

A millennia of military history can be witnessed almost everywhere you turn in Gibraltar, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves into a fortress that encapsulates numerous bygone eras of military defence.

These sights are everywhere, from Rosia Bay to Europa, Line Wall to the Grand Bastion, yet when you live here their presence is the very fabric of the town and it is easy to forget that Gibraltar is one of the most fortified places in the world.

Approaching the north of the town on foot, you are immediately met by towering walls and battlements. Due to the northern approach being the easiest side to access, the north front was arguably the most important of Gibraltar’s fortifications. Sadly, a lot of these structures became obsolete and have been left unused since the end of WWII.

Not only that, after decades of these areas being largely ignored, they became a tipping ground for thousands of tonnes of rubble, household appliances and waste, blocking access to many of its galleries and ramparts and obscuring many of its treasures.

But thankfully a massive clean-up began in 2015, and we were lucky enough to be invited on a tour of the area to see the progress that has been made. The results of this effort have been remarkable, opening up a world of possibilities for the Northern Defences.

We met with Carl Viagas, the project manager responsible for overseeing the project on behalf of the Gibraltar Government, to talk about their historical importance, the clearing of the area and future plans.

A defensive evolution

Gibraltar has been a military outpost for almost a thousand years, changing hands between the Moors, Spanish and British. Over the centuries each occupying force extended and modified the lines, adding new bastions, batteries and galleries.

Initial fortifications were built by the Moors in 1160, to guard against attacks from the Christian Kings of Aragon and Castile. But after the first siege of Gibraltar in 1309, the city fell to the Castilians, who subsequently repaired and then improved the existing defences. When the city fell again to the Moors after the third siege of 1333, further reinforcement was ordered. This refortified city reached from Grand Casemates Square up to Upper Castle Road, located in the north-eastern area of the city as we see it today.

After the eighth siege of 1462, Castile regained control of Gibraltar but as the threat from the Moors diminished a lot of the fortifications fell into disrepair. An attack in 1540 from Barbary Pirates forced the Spanish Crown to revaluate these vulnerabilities. The Charles V Wall in the south was built and Landport Gate in the north was strengthened. Between 1558-1565 a wall extending to the Upper Rock was also constructed.

As military technology evolved, so did the fortifications. The walls were suitable for archers, but changes needed to be made to enable mounted canon. A series of new batteries were built along the Line Wall, and the Grand Battery was also modified to mount cannon facing out onto the isthmus.

In 1704, after just four days of battle, Gibraltar fell to Anglo-Dutch forces. The Franco-Spanish army responded by laying siege on Gibraltar, which caused substantial damage to the already derelict fortifications. However, the Anglo-Dutch forces were able to persist and the twelfth siege was abandoned after eight months. The most significant expansions to Gibraltar’s defences took place during the British occupation, from the initial developments in the 1700s to the additions made during World War II.

Exploring the Northern Defences

Beginning our ascent from Casemates, Carl explained more about the importance of the Northern Defences and why such efforts were made to ensure they were so well fortified.

These defences looked out onto a marshland directly below and a sandy isthmus that extended to the Spanish mainland. Their main purpose was to fire on an enemy that was attacking its northern gate at Landport.

When the British occupied the Rock, they decided to form a narrow causeway, flanked by inundated land on each side, meaning an enemy approach was much more vulnerable as they funneled their troops towards the northern lines. Gun and infantry positions were placed above, all strategically positioned a long half a kilometer of layered battlements that could fire upon the bridge and causeway. Further defensive layers were constructed, including more batteries and bastions, as well as galleries further up the

The full extent of these defences covers the entire north side of the Rock, from Princess Caroline’s Battery in the Upper Rock, down to the Great Siege Tunnels and all the way to Landport and the Grand Battery. The clean-up project focused on the lower parts of the galleries which are comprised of the Kings Lines, Queens Lines and Princes lines.

Climbing upward and stopping to admire the views along the way, you get a good sense of the strategic thought that went into their construction. Through the expanse of dark tunnels that allowed soldiers hidden routes when under fire, windowed galleries and fall back positions, and the expansive views on each tier. Every part of the Rocks natural landscape was used to maximise these defences, ensuring all angles were covered from a series of deliberately placed vantage points.

When the cleanup began in 2015, no one really knew what to expect or what they would find. Due to the amount of vegetation that had engulfed certain areas and the mountains of rubble that had obscured and denied access to parts of the lines for decades, the condition of the defences were unknown. Carl, with the support of a main contractor and volunteers such as the Royal Engineers, began their efforts at Granada Gate and started to find that the majority of its structures were still intact. The next stage was the Princes lines, and finally the Kings and Queens Lines which were the most logistically challenging of the three stages.

What has been revealed is a wealth of areas that encapsulate how each occupying force has altered the defences over the centuries. From original Moorish walls that have been repaired or changed by the Spanish and British, embrasures that have been adapted over time, batteries that have been expanded to accommodate heavy gun artillery and search light posts for World War II. In a brief snapshot you can see a thousand years of military history unfold before your very eyes, sights that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else in the world.

Examples of this are the Star Chamber in the centre of the tunnels that span the length of lines. Originally the hub of tunneling operations in the 1700s, it was later used as one of the communications centres for Operation Torch. Bunkers on the Princes Lines

El centro de operaciones de túneles del siglo XVIII, se usó con posterioridad como uno de los centros de comunicaciones para la Operación Antorcha. Los bunkers en Princes Lines muestran modificaciones ad hoc, donde se agregaron durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial pesadas tanto puertas de acero como techos, para una cubierta adicional. display ad hoc modifications, where during World War II; heavy steel doors were added as roofing for additional cover. New discoveries have also been made, such as a defensive wall that can now be seen stretching upward passed the Moorish castle and is believed to date back to the 1600s.

So what’s next?

This area offers so much in terms of historical tours and with the addition of perhaps more interactive exhibits and audiovisual elements it would undoubtedly attract both tourists and locals alike.

But as we discussed with Carl, its potential is far greater. With previous projects such as the use of Kings Bastion as a leisure centre having been so successful, it would be fantastic to see this part of Gibraltar utilised in a way that offers new and exciting leisure activities that keep locals coming back again and again.

The tunnels have already been used for Halloween events but their unique design means that it could also offer anything from zip lines to rock climbing, restaurants to laser tag and even yoga sessions that offer stunning views across the bay.

Upon the successful completion of the clean-up project, Gibraltar’s Deputy Chief Minister, Dr John Garcia, has high hopes for the areas future; “As a result of this Government’s vision, the Northern Defences have been transformed from a jungle into a jewel. I am proud to say that this project addresses our continued responsibility and commitment to the Rock’s heritage and environment, and it also shows the potential to increase the value of our tourist product and social demands for open areas.”

The thing we all agreed on, is that any such projects to develop this area as a leisure space should ensure that it is respectful to its landmarks and heritage and it would be a missed opportunity to not take advantage of this fantastic space. With imaginative planning this wonderful area could bring something special to the Rock.

En el corazón de Los Alcornocales

El Aljibe Visitor Centre and Botanic Garden are located in the heart of Los Alcornocales natural park, just 2 km from Alcala de los Gazules, the main town of the region.

The Centre is responsible for collecting and studying the area to further environmental education and to encourage the local population to become more involved with the natural park.

Our visitors can get to know Los Arconocales through several different facilities. The main information point and reception provides visitors with information regarding the various trails the park has to offer. We also have two exhibitions that explore the diverse ecological and human history of the area and the unique environmental aspects of its landscapes and forests forests, comprised of wild comprised of wild olive trees, Portuguese oaks, cork oaks, cloud forests and gallery forests.

An events room, overlooking an Andalusian patio filled with local flora and fauna and boasting lots of natural light is also available for celebrations, business events, business meetings, conferences, training courses and product presentations.

Alongside these facilities we also offer a restaurant and café service as well as an annual events calendar in the hopes that we can bring our visitors closer to the heart of this natural parkland.

Adjacent to the Centre is the Botanic Garden, a beautiful space that holds several examples of the unique flora that can be found in Los Alcornocales. The garden is composed of some real botanical gems, with rare species such as rhododendron, also called Ojaranzo (Rhododendron ponticum), a prehis toric plant that has survived millennia. The Cau ceNatura S.L. team (the organisation that currently runs the Visitor Cen tre and El Aljibe Botanical Gar den) offer guided tours of the park and its trails. Included in these tours are break fast and/or lunch, which consist of local produce typical to the area, such as blue goat cheese, charcuterie meats and local game.

El Centro de Visitantes y Jardín Botánico El Aljibe se encuentra en pleno corazón del Parque Natural Los Alcornocales, a tan solo 2 kms. de Alcalá de los Gazules, la población de referencia de la comarca. El Centro recoge e integra varios enfoques para acometer la interpretación ambiental y el acercamiento de la población al Parque Natural, entre sus instalaciones cuenta con el Punto de Información –Recepción en el que damos información al visitante de los senderos con los que cuenta el Parque Natural, dos salas expositivas que nos introducen a diversos aspectos que hablan sobre la historia ecológica y humana del territorio y las singularidades ecológicas y paisajísticas de la campiña y los bosques (acebuchales, quejigales, alcornocal, bosques de niebla y canutos).

También cuenta con una sala para eventos que ponemos a su disposición para la celebración de actividades empresariales, reuniones de trabajo, conferencias, cursos de formación, presentación de productos, con vistas al exterior de un patio andaluz con mucha luz natural y vegetación del entorno. Complementamos la oferta del equipamiento con el servicio de restauración y cafetería al resto de actuaciones que se llevan a cabo en el calendario anual del Centro, para acercar a los visitantes a los valores del Parque.

Anexo al Centro de Visitantes se encuentra el Jardín Botánico, espacio que muestra una representación de la singular flora del parque natural Los Alcornocales, formada por verdaderas joyas botánicas, con especies únicas en el mundo como el rododendro, también llamado ojaranzo (Rhododendron ponticum), auténtico superviviente de épocas pasadas. El equipo de CauceNatura S.L. (empresa dinamizadora del Centro de Visitantes y Jardín Botánico el Aljibe) ofrece el servicio de visitas guiadas al equipamiento y senderos del Parque Natural, ampliando el servicio con desayunos saludables y/o almuerzos con productos gastronómicos típicos de la zona (queso azul de cabra, embutidos, carnes de caza…).

Finally, we will visit the Suberoteca del Corcho, a unique space in Andalucia that exhibits cork specimens extracted from the Andalusian mountains dating from 1995 to the present day. After the tours we will head to the bar/restaurant to sample some local produce (cheese and local sausages accompanied with red wine from the area).

Single price: £24 (minimum group of 10 people).

Services included: Tour guide, materials, local food produce and insurance. The activity will be suspended if the minimum number of participants is not met or if the weather is unfavourable. In the event of cancellation, participants will be notified.

You can now discover one of the most extraordinary spaces in the Natural Park of Los Alcornocales, a place that has been declared an area of ecological significance due to its biodiversity and landscape. Portuguese Oak groves, areas of closed canopy trees, shrublands exposed to fierce winds and rare cloud forests, make this jungle habitat the only one of its kind on the European Continent. This exceptional environment, formed by coastal moisture accumulating in narrow valleys, has conserved a Laurel Forest present here since the tertiary era (2.6 million years ago). Make your way via 4x4 with Ornitour to the outskirts of the forest, with informative stops along the way. From here it is a short journey by foot through the cloud forest, ending at the Llanos del Juncal; source of the Guadalmesí river. Accompanied by a specialist guide, this tour will allow you to fully discover this natural haven, giving you the opportunity to photograph the singular flora and fauna and to marvel at the spectacular views of the Straits of Gibraltar. Vehicle access to the fringes of the forest (permit included) means that you can observe and enjoy this natural landscape without the physical exertion of a long hike, making it a great option for people of all ages and fitness levels. The services included on the tour are; a specialist guide, 4x4 vehicle, park permits, insurances and taxes, snacks, a guide book and photos. The Natural Park of Breña and Marismas del Barbate is located on the Atlantic coast of Cadiz, between the municipalities of Barbate and Vejer. A protected natural space, which houses a diverse landscape that is difficult to find elsewhere in our geography.

El Parque Natural de la Breña y Marismas del Barbate se encuentra situado en la costa atlántica de Cádiz, entre los términos municipales de Barbate y Vejer. Un espacio natural protegido, que alberga una diversidad de paisajes difícil de encontrar en otros lugares de nuestra geografía.

Dunes, pine forests, cliffs and marshes make up the diverse ecosystem found in this spectacular environment. Due to its proximity to the Straits of Gibraltar, the marsh of the river Barbate is an ideal resting point between Europe and Africa for migratory birds, and therefore, an outstanding place for bird watching.

Dunas, pinares, acantilados y marismas son los ecosistemas que podemos encontrar en este entorno espectacular. La marisma del río Barbate debido a su proximidad al Estrecho de Gibraltar hace de ella un punto ideal de descanso intermedio en las rutas migratorias de aves entre Europa y África, y por ende, de un lugar muy atractivo para la observación de aves.

The information point, in the Port of Barbate, is located in the Darsena Deportiva (Sport Inner Har bour) and is the main information and entry point to the park. Admission is free and gives access to a RENPA (Network of Natural Protected Areas of Andalusia) information area, providing practical information about Breña and Marismas as well as other parks in the region. It also includes entry to an exhibition.

The exhibition “A Coastal Mosaic”, showcases and defines the three areas of this protected parkland: La Breña; A watchtower on the Atlantic, Marismas del Barbate; A dance between the sea and the river, and Trafalgar; A battle between east and west. In this permanent and interactive exhibition,

To achieve this, we have renovated a 200-yearold Andalusian farmhouse and transformed it into Algaba de Ronda les ofrece un lugar donde la belleza, la diversidad y la riqueza del mundo rural se alían para facilitarles el placer de conocer una cultura, su historia y todo cuanto un territorio puede aportarnos en conocimiento, calidad de vida y bienestar. Para ello, en el interior de la finca hemos rehabilitado un cortijo andaluz, que con más de 200 años de historia es ahora Centro de Formación y Eventos.

Situated within a 50-hectare Mediterranean forest, you can admire splendid examples of cork oaks, gall oaks, holm oaks and other related botanical species from the area, making our accommodation ideal for those who value traditional architecture, getting closer to nature and experiencing the old charm of rural life.

The original part of the farmhouse has been reformed and renovated into a training, education and events centre, which is comprised of several rooms; an outdoor classroom, a dining room, a multipurpose room, a library and an auditorium with a fifty-person capacity. Its features are that of simplicity, beauty and functionality, providing the right environment for conducting courses, conferences, meetings, and small celebrations.

Our guests can also enjoy exclusive use of our restaurant and catering services, offering a wide range of traditional Mediterranean dishes, made with local and organic produce.

The agroecological projects conducted at the farm form a substantial part of our work. To facilitate this we have developed two fundamental principles to help inform our visitors: the first, to deepen and raise awareness of the importance of a healthy diet, and the second, to highlight the value of the work of those who produce quality food without impacting the environments natural resources or its ecological qualities.

At the Algaba Centre we jar honey produced from our own hives and sell organic meat. These and other agro-food products from the Serrania de Ronda can be purchased at the Centre’s shop or by getting in touch with us via our contact details.

The farm is also carrying out a program for the conservation of endangered Andalusian livestock breeds, by rearing pure bred Cardena cows, Andalusian chickens, Grazalema-born Merino sheep and the Cadiz golden pig. We also collaborate with scientific studies on their characterisation, reproductive traits and the repopulation of these species, as well as participating in education and awareness campaigns.

As an Environmental Education Centre, we offer a wide range of educational programs for locals and visitors to better appreciate the ecological qualities of the Serrania de Ronda and to inspire a more conscious, responsible and proactive approach to the environment.

Para la labor productiva agroecológica de la finca desarrollamos una función educativa en dos vertientes fundamentales: por un lado, profundizando y sensibilizando acerca de la importancia de una alimentación sana y por otro, destacando el valor del trabajo de quienes producen alimentos de calidad sin menoscabar los recursos del medio ni la calidad de los ecosistemas.

En el Centro Algaba envasamos la miel de nuestras colmenas y vendemos carne ecológica. Estos y otros productos agroalimentarios de la Serranía de Ronda se pueden adquirir en la tienda del Centro o a través del nuestra dirección de contacto.

En la finca Algaba llevamos a cabo un programa para la conservación de las razas autóctonas ganaderas andaluzas en peligro de extinción, manteniendo la crianza en pureza de vacas cárdenas, gallinas andaluzas, ovejas merina grazalemeña y cerdo dorado gaditano. Colaboramos en la realización de estudios científicos sobre su caracterización, rasgos productivos y posibilidades de recuperación, y participamos en campañas de información, educación y concienciación. El poblado prehistórico de la Algaba recrea un modelo de sociedad prehistórica sedentaria del neolítico, y en cuyo interior se han construido 16 cabañas dotadas de todo tipo de utensilios y enseres domésticos. Algaba de Ronda como Centro de Educación Ambiental, ofrece una amplia oferta educativa para conocer los valores naturales de la Serranía de Ronda así como para avanzar hacia una ciudadanía más consciente, responsable y proactiva.

El Centro Algaba está situado en una finca de monte mediterráneo de 50 Has de superficie, donde se pueden contemplar espléndidos ejemplares de alcornoques, quejigos, encinas y una gran diversidad de especies asociadas.

Sixteen huts have been built and each filled with utensils and primitive household tools, giving the visitor a good sense of how prehistoric life in the area would have been.

Our interactive exhibit, “The world of birds”, is an ornithological observatory where you can learn how to identify the different bird species, their nests and chicks, the type of food they eat and the dangers that threaten them, amongst other aspects of the lives of these wonderful creatures.

The Geological area of the Algaba is a window into the Serrania de Ronda and a place where you can experience an exceptional and unique geographical region where nearly all of the characteristic of the Baetic Mountain Ranges can be found.

Pedaling up hills at the same time as enjoying sweeping views of the Straits behind, and then in front of you, is quite the phenomenon. I can say from personal experience - and one of relatively low fitness - riding an electric bike up the Rock made me feel like I had super powers. Or at least a pair of bionic legs. Arriving at O’Hara’s Battery, the Rock’s highest point, with Africa looking closer than ever after a week of westerly winds, I felt miles away from the busy town below.

Cycling has always been an excellent way to navigate Gibraltar’s often traffic-laden streets. However much of it is reduced to sea level; bike rides up the Rock are not for the faint-hearted.

Nevertheless, the Upper Rock Nature Reserve now covers over a third of Gibraltar’s total surface area. For a place that desperately lacks open space, this is quite an expansive figure. In 2013 the Reserve was extended to include new areas in an attempt to further protect the natural habitat of Gibraltar’s front running tourist attraction - the Barbary apes - and also preserve the rare species of flora and fauna that form part of the Rock’s unique biodiversity. ive trees grow abundantly up here, as do paperwhite narcissus, giant Tangier fennel and the Gibraltar candytuft, our national flower. Yet most of it remains relatively inaccessible to visitors.

The recently up and running EBike Gibraltar aim to change this and offer tourists (and non-tourists) the chance to get right into the heart of the Upper Rock. With a fleet of premium electric bikes, the EBike team are the first company in Gibraltar offering vehicular carbon-free guided excursions into the impressively well-maintained Nature Reserve.

With a maximum of 10 cyclists per group, tourists will be led on an exploratory ride around and up the Rock to sites only previously accessible by foot. With enough electrical power to allow even the most novice of cyclists to navigate the steep hills that take you over 400 metres above sea level, the tour will encompass all the historical sites and attractions that play such a significant part of Gibraltar’s heritage. And obviously includes the compulsory visit to the apes!

My exhilaration on both ascent and decent has

me convinced: assisted cycling allows people of all levels of fitness to experience both the euphoria and endorphins of a fast-paced cycle ride, at the same time as comfortably enjoying a historical tour in beautiful surroundings. And all at a steep incline!

It’s no surprise that latest research shows e-bike users getting seven times more use out of their bikes than regular cyclists. And they now outsell traditional bicycles in the Netherlands - a country that has always taken its cycling very seriously.

In a place like Gibraltar, where there are as many motor vehicles as people, the use of e-bikes could play a significant role in improving air quality as well as easing traffic congestion and noise pollution.

Like the ubiquitous smartphone, ebikes are not cheap. But they may prove to be just as useful. A high quality ebike can bring years of happy, emission free personal transportation. And let’s face it, any investment which leads to less road pollution, especially in Gibraltar, is a breath of fresh air for everyone.

Pedalear por las colinas al mismo tiempo que disfruta de vistas panorámicas del Estrecho detrás, y luego frente a usted, es todo un fenómeno. Puedo decir por experiencia personal - y un estado físico/ deportivo relativamente bajo- que, conducir una bicicleta eléctrica por la Roca, me hizo sentir que tenía superpoderes o, al menos, un par de piernas biónicas. Al llegar a O’Hara’s Battery, el punto más alto de la roca, con una visión de África más cercana que nunca después de una semana de vientos del oeste, me sentí a millas de distancia de la bulliciosa ciudad.

El ciclismo siempre ha sido una excelente manera de circular por las transitadas calles de Gibraltar. Sin embargo, solemos reducir su uso a la cercanía del nivel del mar porque los paseos por la roca, no son para los débiles de corazón.

El recientemente implementado EBike Gibraltar tiene como objetivo cambiar esta situación y ofrecer a los turistas -y no turistas- la oportunidad de adentrarse directamente al corazón de Upper Rock. Con una flota de bicicletas eléctricas de primera calidad, el equipo de EBike, es la primera compañía en Gibraltar que ofrece excursiones guiadas libres de dióxido de carbono, en la impresionante Reserva Natural.

Mi entusiasmo me ha convencido, tanto por el ascenso como por el descenso. El ciclismo asistido permite a las personas, independientemente de su nivel deportivo o físico, experimentar tanto la euforia como las endorfinas de un paseo en bicicleta acelerado, al mismo tiempo que disfrutan cómodamente de un recorrido histórico, en un entorno hermoso. ¡Y todo en una pendiente empinada!

No es sorprendente que las últimas investigaciones muestran que los usuarios de bicicletas eléctricas obtienen siete veces más uso de sus bicicletas que los ciclistas regulares. En la actualidad, un ejemplo es que en zonas como los Países Bajos, se venden más esta variedad de bicicletas eléctricas que las tradicionales. Precisamente un país, que siempre ha tomado la bicicleta muy en serio.

En un lugar como Gibraltar, donde nos encontramos con tantos vehículos motorizados como personas, el uso de bicicletas eléctricas podría desempeñar un papel importante en la mejora de la calidad del aire y en la reducción de la congestión del tráfico y la contaminación acústica.

In Oriental cultures it is often said that ignorance is Evil epitomised, and perhaps this aphorism explains the current environment in which we live.

Not understanding the richness of our natural and cultural heritage prevents the full development of societies. We are increasingly volatile and uninformed inspite of hyper connections, wireless networks or speed of access. Without denigrating new technologies in any way, I would like to talk about the sensory, physical, face-to-face and educational experience of visiting an interpretation center.

Imagine one of the many wise old guides - here in Europe there are very few - of the North American natural spaces. They know every inch of the surrounding land, perceive it, sense it, feel it; whether it be animal, plant or rock, nothing escapes their acute perception of everything that grows, moves or flies. Well, there was a time when they demanded, in order to properly share their wisdom, love and respect, that a space be constructed that would enamor visitors with explanations; indulge them and interpret the place they were going to visit later. They sought in this way to improve the experience of the visit and the understanding of the area and emotions shared.

But what exactly is an interpretation center? It is certainly not a museum, nor an exhibition of texts and photos. An interpretation center is a new strategy for an attractive, effective and educational tool that turns the space into a didactic and participative

experience, where all your senses are activated to live the knowledge and to percieve the value of nature, the history, the heritage and the territory.

Apart from its educational social benefits, it is also a means to attract a new type of cultural tourism, products and services combining pleasure and enjoyment into an adventure of knowledge, which demands sustainable products and offers.

These centers are adaptable to any theme, place or size. Expographic areas can be from a small area of attention to the public, to huge buildings with many rooms. In addition to the visitor reception area and extensive rooms dedicated to the thematic units of the place, they also hold resource libraries, multipurpose rooms, rooms for temporary exhibitions and even cafeterias, restaurants and shops. All designed to improve the experience. All designed to maximize the impact and reach of the product, service or aspect that is being shared.

There are few companies that can design them and guarantee of the highest level of specialization and coordination they require. Success is only possible with good management that allows the interaction between the different specialisations at the service of the so-called “Project Culture”.

Desconocer la riqueza de nuestro patrimonio natural y cultural impide el desarrollo pleno de las sociedades, cada vez más volátiles y desinformadas a pesar de nuestras hiperconexiónes, redes inalámbrica o velocidad de acceso que tengamos. Sin renunciar a las nuevas tecnologías, pero tampoco sobrevalorándolas, me gustaría hablar de otra experiencia. La sensorial, física, presencial y educativa de visitar un centro de interpretación.

Imaginaros uno de los muchísimos guías —aquí en Europa, son escasísimos— de los espacios naturales norteamericanos, conocedores de cada centímetro del terreno que le rodea, lo percibe, lo palpa, lo siente; ya sea animal, planta o roca, nada se escapa a su aguda percepción de todo lo que crece, se mueve o vuela. Pues hubo una época en que exigieron, para poder transmitir correctamente su sabiduría, amor y respeto, que se construyera un espacio que explicara, interpretara y enamorara al visitante sobre el lugar que posteriormente iban a visitar. De esta manera entenderían mejor el valor de aquello que estaban viviendo. ¿Pero qué es exactamente un centro de interpretación? Por supuesto no es un museo, tampoco una exposición de textos y fotos. Un centro de interpretación es una nueva estrategia para un aprendizaje atractivo, eficaz y sorprendente, que convierte el espacio en una experiencia didáctica y participativa, donde todos los sentidos se activan par vivir el conocimiento y poner en valor la naturaleza, la historia, el patrimonio y el territorio.

Aparte de sus beneficios educativos, también es un medio para atraer a un nuevo tipo de turismo cultural, que combinan el placer y el disfrute con la aventura del saber, que exigen ofertas y productos sostenibles, y que además tienen un alto poder adquisitivo. Estos centros son adaptables a cualquier temática, lugar o tamaño, pueden tener desde un área expográfica de apenas 100 metros cuadrados y un pequeño espacio de atención al público, hasta edificaciones enormes con multitud de estancias. Además de la zona de recepción al visitante y extensas salas dedicadas a las unidades temáticas del lugar, también suelen tener biblioteca, archivo, sala de usos múltiples, sala para exposiciones temporales e incluso una superficie con cafetería, restauración y tienda. Todos diseñados en conjunto para un major impacto en la oferta. Son escasas las empresas que puedan diseñarlos con garantía debido al alto nivel de especialización y coordinación que requieren. El éxito solo es posible con una buena gestión que permita la interacción entre los diferentes tipos de expertos al servicio de la denominada “Cultura del Proyecto”. Desde los responsables facultativos encargados de preparar los contenidos y la arquitectura de los datos, hasta directores de arte que desarrollen una estrategia creativa y una planificación de los medios y soportes que se van a utilizar. Y por supuesto un equipo de profesionales en todas las áreas de producción.
