A huge welcome to our OTWO 3 year special.

Wow, three years already?! And as if on cue we have one of the hottest months ever recorded in many areas around the world. Forest fires all over Europe, just at our doorstep.

England suffering through a heatwave so intense it’s categorized as a “fear for life” Climate emergency.

Climate change is indeed here, and we all need to buckle our seatbelts because we are in for a rough ride and big changes.

Incredible to see how this heat has affected so many areas and in so many ways.

The forest fires - loss of natural habitat and in some areas wiping out whole villages. A vicious phenomenon that is now terrorizing many thousands of people all over the world. Transport disruptions with rail tracks distorting under in the extreme heat, airplanes not taking off from the melting tarmacs, a science fiction horror movie, except it isn’t fictionit’s our present environment – our new normal!

This is not what our future holds, this is our now. Imagine what the consequences of further increases for our future generations.

We have a lot of work to do and there is no choice on the matter.

OTWO Magazine was created for this very reason, climate anxiety is real, and I feel it increasing as the summer months roll through, like many others, I’m sure.

A constant concern for our future generations, our children, and grandchildren.

I like many of you, would do anything for my kids so we must tackle the question of what must be done now to protect their future. That is one question that keeps me up many nights. This month we celebrate OTWO’s 3-year anniversary and with this we have created an article to showcase all our many editions and what our focuses have been, where we would like our future to go.

What an honor it has been to work with such inspirational people along the way. It is indeed a privilege to work with on something I feel so passionate on.

What a better way to celebrate OTWO’s 3-year

anniversary and helping this ever-growing climate anxiety than by focusing on the positive and organizing Gibraltar’s very own Eco Festival. It is so refreshing to see such a vast number of companies supporting this major event in Gibraltar. The preparations are well on their way for September. Ecopassion, Spirit of the Rock, UCM, Cycle Centre, Ebikes, Metalrok/Ecopark and this is just to name a few that are involved. It is such a pleasure to showcase all the inspiring people we have had the honor of working with along these 3 years.

This is a showcase of our Green Week which will be an international event making Gibraltar shine as beacon of commitment to the development of new philosophies of consumerism and ways of life. Much more on that later…

All I can say is that from the start of OTWO to now it is indeed refreshing to see how mindsets have changed in what is indeed a climate crisis. When we started there were many sceptics, people unsure if this was a reality or not – maybe not wanting to believe this was our future. Unfortunately, recent events have now shown it to be true, but I have to give our upmost gratitude to all who have supported this project; like-minded individuals who we have met along the way – you all have inspired us so much and continue to do so with your strength and determination to improve our environment and wellbeing. Thank you all for your strength, inspiration, and support.

Here’s to a lifetime of positive change, determination for a better future and technologies that will overcome any hurdle humanity is up against. We can and will survive this and make future generations proud of what we have achieved. Your commitment is our fuel, we will not rest until every individual has the best options to help our quest.

Thank you so much to all who have supported up throughout our journey, we are forever grateful, thank you for making our future a better one – together we will get there

Una gran bienvenida a nuestro especial 3 años de OTWO. Vaya, ¿tres años ya? Y como si fuera una señal, tenemos uno de los meses más calurosos jamás registrados en muchas zonas del mundo. Incendios forestales en toda Europa, justo en nuestra puerta. Inglaterra sufriendo una ola de calor tan intensa que está catalogada como emergencia climática de “temor por la vida”.

El cambio climático ya está aquí, y todos tenemos que abrocharnos el cinturón porque nos espera un duro viaje y grandes cambios. Es increíble ver cómo este calor ha afectado a tantas zonas y de tantas maneras. Los incendios forestales: la pérdida del hábitat natural y, en algunas zonas, la desaparición de pueblos enteros. Un fenómeno despiadado que ahora aterroriza a muchos miles de personas en todo el mundo. Interrupciones en el transporte, con vías férreas que se distorsionan bajo el calor extremo, aviones que no despegan de las pistas de los aeropuertos que se derriten, una película de terror de ciencia ficción, excepto que no es ficción: es nuestro entorno actual, ¡nuestra nueva normalidad!

Esto no es lo que nos depara el futuro, es nuestro ahora. Imagina las consecuencias de un mayor aumento para nuestras futuras generaciones.

Tenemos mucho trabajo que hacer y no hay elección en este asunto. La revista OTWO se creó por esta misma razón, la ansiedad climática es real, y la siento aumentar a medida que pasan los meses de verano, como muchos otros, estoy segura.

Una preocupación constante por nuestras futuras generaciones, nuestros hijos y nietos. Yo, como muchos de vosotros, haría cualquier cosa por mis hijos, así que debemos abordar la cuestión de qué hay que hacer ahora para proteger su futuro. Es una pregunta que me quita el sueño muchas noches. Este mes celebramos el tercer aniversario de OTWO y con ello hemos creado un artículo para mostrar todas nuestras ediciones y cuáles han sido nuestros enfoques, hacia dónde nos gustaría que fuera nuestro futuro.

Qué honor ha sido colaborar con personas tan inspiradoras a lo largo del camino. Es realmente un privilegio trabajar con algo que me apasiona tanto.

Qué mejor manera de celebrar el tercer aniversario de OTWO y de ayudar a este creciente problema

climático que centrándose en lo positivo y organizando el propio Festival Ecológico de Gibraltar. Es muy reconfortante ver que un número tan amplio de empresas apoyan este importante evento en Gibraltar. Los preparativos están en marcha para septiembre. Ecopassion, Spirit of the Rock, UCM, Cycle Centre, Ebikes, Metalrok/Ecopark y esto es sólo por nombrar algunas de las que participan. Es un placer mostrar a toda la gente inspiradora con la que hemos tenido el honor de trabajar a lo largo de estos 3 años. Este es un escaparate de nuestra Semana Verde que será un evento internacional que hará brillar a Gibraltar como faro de compromiso con el desarrollo de nuevas filosofías de consumo y formas de vida. Más adelante hablaremos de ello...

Todo lo que puedo decir, es que desde el inicio de OTWO hasta ahora, es realmente refrescante ver cómo han cambiado las mentalidades en lo que es realmente una crisis climática. Cuando empezamos había muchos escépticos, gente que no estaba segura de si esto era una realidad o no, quizá no queriendo creer que este era nuestro futuro. Desgraciadamente, los últimos acontecimientos han demostrado que es cierto, pero tengo que dar nuestra máxima gratitud a todos los que han apoyado este proyecto; a las personas con ideas afines que hemos conocido por el camino: todos vosotros nos habéis inspirado mucho y seguís haciéndolo con vuestra fuerza y determinación para mejorar nuestro medio ambiente y bienestar. Gracias a todos por vuestra fuerza, inspiración y apoyo.

Brindemos por una vida de cambios positivos, por la determinación de un futuro mejor y por las tecnologías que superarán cualquier obstáculo al que se enfrente la humanidad. Podemos sobrevivir, y lo haremos, y haremos que las generaciones futuras se sientan orgullosas de lo que hemos conseguido. Tu compromiso es nuestro combustible, no descansaremos hasta que cada individuo tenga las mejores opciones para ayudar a nuestra búsqueda.

Water bodies such as ponds are an attractive feature of gardens and the summer is the best season for flowering aquatic plants in horticulture. Waterlilies flower during the summer, but there are other species too. The Sacred Lotus is found across Asia and Australasia, although it is thought to be originally native across northern India to Indochina, having been introduced elsewhere. It is an exceptionally attractive plant for garden ponds. The leaves have a ‘superhydrophobic’ quality, with water droplets simply rolling off them like droplets of mercury. The Sacred Lotus produces extremely attractive flowers during the summer and and these are considered the national flower of India and Vietnam. The very curious seed pods are, in their own way, every bit as striking as the flowers and the seeds, which are edible, an remain viable for many years if conditions are suitable. The seeds survive well in temporary water bodies, even some that remain dry for years. The seeds will rehydrate and germinate once flooding occurs. As an extreme example, seeds recovered from a dry lake bed and germinated in China were estimated to be around 1300 years old!

Las masas de agua, como los estanques, son un elemento atractivo de los jardines y el verano es la mejor estación para la floración de las plantas acuáticas en la horticultura. Los nenúfares florecen durante el verano, pero también hay otras especies. El loto sagrado se encuentra en toda Asia y Australasia, aunque se cree que es originario del norte de la India hasta Indochina, habiendo sido introducido en otros lugares. MINISTRY FOR TRANSPORT RELAUNCHES PEDAL READY INITIATIVE

The Pedal Ready initiative has been relaunched as of the GSLA 2022 summer programme.

Pedal Ready offers cycling proficiency courses to help improve cycling skills and aims to promote safe cycling in Gibraltar in line with recommendations outlined within the Sustainable Traffic, Transport and Parking Plan (STTPP).

The course is in three structured levels. Level 1 focuses on perfecting balance and control. Level 2 introduces cyclists to the urban environment using quiet roads and junctions. Level 3 empowers individuals to ride independently and safely within a realistic urban environment. A Level 0 will also be offered, which aims to assist individuals that have never cycled.

In a press release, the Government shared why it has relaunched the initiative. “One of the key factors that encourage bicycle use is user confidence. Having the necessary skills is key to promoting the bicycle as a sustainable alternative means of transport. Even when used recreationally, the bicycle is also an excellent way to keep fit. Pedal ready is part of Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar’s commitment to improve health and seek healthier lifestyles for the

community, empowering individuals, and paving the way for a Green Gibraltar and a Child-Friendly City”.

The first programme will offer Level 1 as a oneday course primarily geared towards children in Year 6. The level 1 course will run daily from Monday the 8th of August to Friday the 12th of August, from 9 am to 12 pm, at the Old Bayside School Playground (currently Governor’s Meadow).

Children must attend with a fit-for-purpose bicycle, which includes working brakes, pumped-up tyres and a helmet. For those that do not have a bicycle, Pedal Ready will endeavour to provide one. Parents must sign a waiver form for children that wish to participate. To register, contact MT@gibraltar.gov.gi Further levels will be announced in the future.

El Ministerio de Transportes relanza

la iniciativa Pedal Ready

La iniciativa Pedal Ready se ha relanzado a partir del programa de verano de GSLA 2022.

Pedal Ready ofrece cursos de perfeccionamiento de ciclismo para ayudar a mejorar las habilidades de los ciclistas y tiene como objetivo promover el uso

seguro de la bicicleta en Gibraltar en línea con las recomendaciones esbozadas en el Plan de Tráfico, Transporte y Estacionamiento Sostenibles (STTPP). El curso consta de tres niveles estructurados. El nivel 1 se centra en perfeccionar el equilibrio y el control. El nivel 2 introduce a los ciclistas en el entorno urbano utilizando carreteras tranquilas y cruces. El nivel 3 capacita a las personas para conducir de forma independiente y segura en un entorno urbano realista. También se ofrecerá un nivel 0, cuyo objetivo es ayudar a las personas que nunca han montado en bicicleta.

En un comunicado de prensa, el Gobierno explicó por qué ha relanzado la iniciativa. «Uno de los factores clave que fomentan el uso de la bicicleta es la confianza del usuario. Disponer de los conocimientos necesarios es fundamental para promover la bicicleta como medio de transporte alternativo y sostenible. Incluso cuando se utiliza de forma recreativa, la bicicleta es también una excelente forma de mantenerse en forma». Pedal ready forma parte del compromiso del Gobierno de Su Majestad de Gibraltar de mejorar la salud y buscar estilos de vida más saludables para la comunidad, capacitando a las personas y allanan-

do el camino hacia un «Gibraltar verde y una ciudad amiga de los niños».

El primer programa ofrecerá el nivel 1 como un curso de un día de duración dirigido principalmente a niños de 6º curso. El curso de nivel 1 se impartirá diariamente desde el lunes 8 de agosto hasta el viernes 12 de agosto, de 9 a 12 horas, en el patio de la antigua escuela Bayside (actualmente Governor’s Meadow). Los niños deben asistir con una bicicleta adecuada, que incluya frenos que funcionen, neumáticos inflados y un casco. Para aquellos que no tengan una bicicleta, Pedal Ready se esforzará por proporcionarles una. Los padres deben firmar un formulario de renuncia para los niños que deseen participar. Para inscribirse, póngase en contacto con MT@gibraltar. gov.gi En el futuro se anunciarán más niveles.

SPAIN ONE STEP CLOSER TO CRACKING DOWN ON FOOD WASTE

A draft bill to tackle food waste in Spain was approved in June and will now go to parliament for the full go-ahead.

The draft legislation outlines requirements for supermarkets and restaurants to reduce the amount of food they throw away, and the penalties businesses will face if they fail to limit their food waste.

The plans include forcing bars and restaurants to offer customers free takeaway containers for any leftovers and for supermarkets to reduce the price of foods that are approaching their ‘best before date’. Medium to large businesses involved in the food industry will also have to outline their own plans to prevent food waste.

Systems will also be put in place to deliver unsold food to charities and food banks and to direct products that are no longer fit for human consumption towards animal feed or fertilisers and biofuel production.

Under the new legislation, domestic food waste, which far outweighs waste from other areas, will be tackled through educational campaigns to try and change behaviours at home.

According to government data, Spain wastes 1.36 million tonnes of food and drink each year, which equates to approximately 31 kilograms per person.

The Government hopes the new law will be passed in parliament and fully introduced by early 2023.

España está más cerca de luchar contra el desperdicio de alimentos

El pasado mes de junio se aprobó un proyecto de ley para luchar contra el desperdicio de alimentos en España.

El proyecto de ley establece requisitos para que los supermercados y restaurantes reduzcan la cantidad de alimentos que tiran a la basura, así como las sanciones a las que se enfrentarán las empresas que no limiten el desperdicio de alimentos.

Los planes incluyen obligar a los bares y restaurantes a ofrecer a los clientes envases gratuitos para llevar las sobras y a los supermercados a reducir el precio de los alimentos que se acerquen a su «fecha de consumo preferente». Las medianas y grandes empresas del sector alimentario también tendrán que elaborar sus propios planes para evitar el desperdicio de alimentos.

También se establecerán sistemas para entregar los alimentos no vendidos a organizaciones benéficas y bancos de alimentos y para destinar los pro-

ductos que ya no son aptos para el consumo humano a la alimentación animal o a la producción de fertilizantes y biocombustibles.

Con la nueva legislación, el despilfarro doméstico de alimentos, que supera con creces el de otros ámbitos, se abordará mediante campañas educativas para intentar cambiar los comportamientos en el hogar.

Según datos del Gobierno, España desperdicia 1,36 millones de toneladas de alimentos y bebidas al año, lo que equivale a unos 31 kilogramos por persona.

El Gobierno espera que la nueva ley se apruebe en el Parlamento y se implante completamente a principios de 2023.

FIRST MEETING OF THE GIBRALTAR NET ZERO DELIVERY BODY

The Gibraltar Government announced the first meeting of the Gibraltar Net Zero Delivery Body (NZDB) was held virtually in early July following the publication of the Climate Change Strategy at the end of last year. The purpose of the NZDB is to take the strategy into its implementation stage.

Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia, chaired the first meeting, with the Minister for the Environment and Climate Change and the Minister for Transport also participating, together with nearly twenty officials.

The group approved draft regulations establishing the NZDB and individual members responded to recommendations made by the Climate Change Committee for their respective organisations.

The NZDB also agreed to establish three priority working groups. Each group will have definite targets to achieve by specific dates to ensure progress towards the overall decarbonisation agenda. The groups are:

- Electric vehicle infrastructure development.

- Cross-government data and reporting processes.

- Renewable energy generation.

Other core areas to be targeted include a public engagement strategy, green finance, and climate adaptation and resilience.

The Deputy Chief Minister thanked all for attending, acknowledging both the amount of work already done in developing the Climate Change Strate-

gy and the significant amount still needed to keep Gibraltar on track with its climate change commitments. He also recognised the need for the public sector to lead by example and for Government action to match the level of ambition set out in the Climate Change Strategy.

The NZDB will meet every two months and report its progress to Parliament every year, and the agenda will be driven by the Department for the Environment and Climate Change.

Primera reunión del Órgano de Suministro de Net Zero de Gibraltar

El Gobierno de Gibraltar anunció que la primera reunión del Órgano de Cumplimiento de la Red de Gibraltar (NZDB) se celebró virtualmente a principios de julio tras la publicación de la Estrategia de Cambio Climático a finales del año pasado. El objetivo de la NZDB es llevar la estrategia a su fase de implementación.

El viceministro jefe, Dr. Joseph García, presidió la primera reunión, en la que también participaron el ministro de Medio Ambiente y Cambio Climático y el ministro de Transportes, junto con cerca de veinte funcionarios.

El grupo aprobó el proyecto de reglamento por el que se establece la NZDB y los miembros individuales respondieron a las recomendaciones formuladas por el Comité de Cambio Climático para sus respectivas organizaciones.

La NZDB también acordó establecer tres grupos de trabajo prioritarios. Cada grupo tendrá objetivos definidos que deberán alcanzarse en fechas específicas para garantizar el progreso hacia la agenda global de descarbonización. Los grupos son:

- Desarrollo de infraestructuras para vehículos eléctricos.

- Datos y procesos de información intergubernamentales.

- Generación de energía renovable.

Otras áreas fundamentales que se abordarán son la estrategia de compromiso público, la financiación verde y la adaptación y resiliencia al clima.

El Viceministro Principal dio las gracias a todos por su asistencia, reconociendo tanto la cantidad de trabajo ya realizado en el desarrollo de la Estrategia de Cambio Climático como la cantidad significativa

que aún se necesita para mantener a Gibraltar en el camino de sus compromisos con el cambio climático. También reconoció la necesidad de que el sector público predique con el ejemplo y de que la acción del Gobierno esté a la altura del nivel de ambición establecido en la Estrategia de Cambio Climático. La NZDB se reunirá cada dos meses e informará de sus progresos al Parlamento cada año, y la agenda será impulsada por el Departamento de Medio Ambiente y Cambio Climático.

BIRD MIGRATION OBSERVATORY NETWORK ESTABLISHED

The Europe-Africa Bird Migration Observatory Network (EABMON) has been created in Gibraltar. Its purpose is for the scientific study and public enjoyment of bird migration between Africa and Europe.

The exciting initiative was launched on the 50th anniversary of the landmark study on Palaearctic-African bird migration by the late Reginal Moreau of Oxford University.

The network has been established as part of a wider commemoration culminating with the Calpe conference in Gibraltar this September, where leading scientists will gather to discuss our current knowledge, climate change impacts and conservation requirements of migratory birds.

Gibraltar is an important site for observing migratory birds. Lying just a short distance from the African Continent, thousands of migratory birds such as Honey Buzzards, Black Kites and Short-toed Eagles pass Gibraltar every year.

Locations for the network have been set up across Gibraltar, with each site enjoying different levels of access and protection. The aim is to maximise research and species conservation as well as public access wherever possible.

EABMON will be coordinated by a board of observatory representatives and chaired by Professor John Cortes.

In a press release, Environment Minister, Professor John Cortes, said: “I am truly excited with this initiative. Moreau’s seminal work is at the heart of my passion for birds and the study of bird migration, and I am delighted to be able to take this step and contribute to the history and development of the

study of these vulnerable creatures. I am really looking forward to Calpe ’22 when we will be able to highlight this initiative to an international audience of experts. Gibraltar will take its deserved place as a leader in the study of bird migration between Europe and Africa.”

Se crea la Red de Observatorios de la Migración de las Aves

Se ha creado en Gibraltar la Red de Observatorios de la Migración de Aves Europa-África (EABMON).

Su objetivo es el estudio científico y el disfrute público de la migración de las aves entre África y Europa.

Esta apasionante iniciativa se puso en marcha con motivo del 50º aniversario del histórico estudio sobre la migración de aves entre el Paleártico y África realizado por el difunto Reginal Moreau, de la Universidad de Oxford.

La red se ha creado como parte de una conmemoración más amplia que culminará con la conferencia de Calpe en Gibraltar el próximo mes de septiembre, en la que se reunirán destacados científicos para debatir sobre nuestros conocimientos actuales, los

impactos del cambio climático y los requisitos de conservación de las aves migratorias.

Gibraltar es un lugar importante para la observación de aves migratorias. Situado a poca distancia del continente africano, miles de aves migratorias, como el halcón abejero, el milano negro y el águila culebrera, pasan por Gibraltar cada año.

Las ubicaciones de la red se han establecido en todo Gibraltar, y cada sitio goza de diferentes niveles de acceso y protección. El objetivo es maximizar la investigación y la conservación de las especies, así como el acceso público siempre que sea posible.

EABMON estará coordinado por una junta de representantes de los observatorios y presidido por el profesor John Cortes.

En un comunicado de prensa, el Ministro de Medio Ambiente, el profesor John Cortes, dijo: “Estoy realmente entusiasmado con esta iniciativa. El trabajo seminal de Moreau está en el corazón de mi pasión por las aves y el estudio de la migración de las aves, y estoy encantado de poder dar este paso y contribuir a la historia y el desarrollo del estudio de estas vulnerables criaturas. Estoy deseando que

llegue Calpe ‘22, donde podremos dar a conocer esta iniciativa a un público internacional de expertos. Gibraltar ocupará su merecido lugar como líder en el estudio de la migración de aves entre Europa y África”.

A solidarity exhibition whose benefits will go to one of the health projects of the Vicente Ferrer Foundation.

Composed of portraits and landscapes, “The Eyes

of India” emotional and colorful, aims to immerse the viewer in the culture, traditions and stories of this land of contrasts.

Compuesta por retratos y paisajes, «Los Ojos de India» emotiva y cargada de colorido, pretende sumergir al espectador en la cultura, tradiciones e historias de esta tierra de contrastes.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY CENTER

Opening during the month of September will be Gibraltar’s first business center focused on energy efficiency and all things sustainable. In an exciting and bold commitment to the Gibraltarian market, the Energy Vision Group will be launching in September a fully serviced business center offering facilities to companies or individuals who are committed to protecting our shared environment by the development of products and services aimed at creating better future.

Already pioneers in successful local products, the management of the group took this decision to assist budding entrepreneurs out there who have a passion for the industry but find creating a company to drive their ideas too daunting a task.

The Centre will have various participation models and will provide exciting networking and development environments for businesses to launch products in Gibraltar, Spain, Morocco, and the Commonwealth.

Durante el mes de septiembre se inaugurará el primer centro de negocios de Gibraltar centrado en la eficiencia energética y en todo lo relacionado con la sostenibilidad. En un emocionante y audaz compromiso con el mercado gibraltareño, el Grupo Energy Vision pondrá en marcha en septiembre un centro de negocios con todos los servicios que ofrece a las empresas o personas que se comprometen a proteger nuestro entorno compartido mediante el desarrollo de productos y servicios destinados a crear un futuro mejor.

Siendo ya pioneros en productos locales de éxito, la dirección del grupo tomó esta decisión para ayudar a los emprendedores en ciernes que tienen pasión por el sector pero que encuentran que crear una empresa para impulsar sus ideas es una tarea demasiado desalentadora.

Since 2015 we are very proud to say that Metalrok Ltd has been providing Gibraltar with a Recycling Service at the premises delivered by the government of Gibraltar Ecopark which is a joint public and private partnership located at 8 Flint Road. There has been an increase in Recycling but even so our daily waste stream contains goods which are perfectly suited to be reused not been recycled ending up in the landfill polluting the environment.

Together we can turn this around by reusing, preventing pollution, reducing usage of raw materials, sustaining the environment for future generations thus preventing them from ending in landfill and sea.

There is a need for these items in places like Senegal in West Africa were there are areas of extreme Poverty. with your cooperation we would like to meet their necessities by helping to provide them with donated unwanted items like:

All Clothing, Furniture inc Mirrors, Linen, household items, toys, office equipment, medical equipment electro domestics, bicycles, scooters, books. Car seats, doors windows, sinks, Showers, toilets.

We are collecting items that are still good for purpose and in usable condition in a bid to give them a new lease of life. Kindly take note that we will not make ourselves responsible for the collection of broken down items. The circumstances these people unfortunately live in deserve a sense of dignity and pride. Masa crítica

One thousand cyclists decked out in lights, costumes and music take up a lot of road.  But that’s the goal of “Critical Mass”, to occupy the streets in a joyful, spontaneous call to action for urban cycling. Critical Mass has been described as a political protest ride, an organized coincidence or a monthly celebration to take back the streets for human powered movement. Currently it is active in over 300 cities world wide, including 25 cities in Spain. Campo de Gibraltar wants to be the next location for the Spanish wave of Critical Mass.

Bike tours with hundreds of participants existed in Sweden in the 1970s. But the first ride within the Critical Mass movement occurred in San Francisco in 1992. This initial event gathered just a few cyclists under the name Commute Clot. But soon after some of these cyclists attended a screening of Ted White’s documentary Return of the Scorcher, about bike culture in the Netherlands and China in comparison with that of the United States. The film showed how in China, both motorists and cyclists have an “understood” method of negotiating intersections without signals. Bikes queue up at these intersections until the number reaches a “critical mass”, at which point the cyclists move together through the intersection. The San Francisco cyclists were inspired so the collective action and the term “Critical Mass” was born.

The Madrid Chapter provides a role model for what Critical Mass could look like in Campo de Gibraltar.  The last Thursday of every month hundreds of Madrid’s cyclists meet in Cibeles for a night ride,both reclaiming the streets from cars and celebrating the cyclist lifestyle. It’s a standing call, no registration, no organization, cyclists congregate at the same time and place each month to ride together.

It’s based on the old adage of “safety in numbers”. The cyclists move in a tight group so that cars don’t enter the formation. Side streets are blocked by individual cyclists to ensure the peloton passes safely. The group rides between 10 and 15 km occupying the entire car lane, but leaving bus lanes free. Critical Mass is not an association or any type of official organization.  It’s a group of individuals acting together.

Pero ese es el objetivo de la «Masa Crítica», ocupar las calles en una alegre y espontánea llamada a la acción en favor del ciclismo urbano. La Masa Crítica se ha descrito como un paseo de protesta política, una coincidencia organizada o una celebración mensual para recuperar las calles para el movimiento con motor humano. Actualmente está activa en más de 300 ciudades de todo el mundo, incluidas 25 ciudades de España. El Campo de Gibraltar quiere ser la próxima sede de la ola española de la Masa Crítica. En los años 70 ya existían en Suecia recorridos en bicicleta con cientos de participantes. Pero el primer paseo dentro del movimiento de la Masa Crítica tuvo lugar en San Francisco en 1992. Es una convocatoria permanente, sin inscripciones ni organización, los ciclistas se reúnen a la misma hora y en el mismo lugar cada mes para pedalear juntos.

Se basa en el viejo adagio de «la seguridad en el número». Los ciclistas se mueven en un grupo cerrado para que los coches no entren en la formación.

Las calles laterales son bloqueadas por ciclistas individuales para garantizar el paso seguro del pelotón. El grupo recorre entre 10 y 15 km ocupando todo el carril de los coches, pero dejando libres los carriles de los autobuses. La Masa Crítica no es una

Campo de Gibraltar is ripe for a Critical Mass movement.  The topography is relatively flat and the climate benign. Commuters move between cities and even countries for work and gas prices are at all time highs. Individual cities on the Spanish side and Gibraltar itself have invested in bike paths.  But bike commuting between municipalities remains a challenge.. Simultaneous night bike rides in various locations within Campo de Gibraltar would demonstrate how connected our communities are, but how current infrastructure systems are not support alternative transportation. A highly visible and recurring bike event would draw attention to this social need in a positive, celebratory format.

Safe urban cycling infrastructure would contribute to a sustainable, healthy lifestyle in Campo de Gibraltar. Affordable, healthy transportation creates liveable urban areas.  Other cities have invested in cycling and are enjoying the benefits.  A local critical mass event will join us to this movement and celebrate all the reasons we love to live in Campo de GIbraltar.

El evento de Cibeles es el más grande, pero Málaga, Zaragoza, León y otras ciudades también forman parte del fenómeno mundial. El Campo de Gibraltar está maduro para un movimiento de Masa Crítica. La topografía es relativamente plana y el clima benigno. Los viajeros se desplazan entre ciudades e incluso países para trabajar y los precios de la gasolina están en máximos históricos. Algunas ciudades de la parte española y el propio Gibraltar han invertido en carriles bici. Pero los desplazamientos en bicicleta entre municipios siguen siendo un reto.. Los paseos nocturnos simultáneos en bicicleta en varios lugares del Campo de Gibraltar demostrarían lo conectadas que están nuestras comunidades, pero cómo los sistemas de infraestructura actuales no apoyan el transporte alternativo. Un evento ciclista altamente visible y recurrente llamaría la atención sobre esta necesidad social en un formato positivo y de celebración.  Una infraestructura ciclista urbana segura contribuiría a un estilo de vida sostenible y saludable en el Campo de Gibraltar. Un transporte asequible y saludable crea zonas urbanas habitables. Otras ciudades han invertido en el uso de la bicicleta y están disfrutando de sus beneficios. Un evento local de masa crítica nos unirá a este movimiento y celebrará todas las razones por las que nos gusta vivir en el Campo de GiIbraltar.

With Full Heart

They say if you do anything in life, do it with full heart. Post-pandemic and with all the war and disasters across the world, businesses are dedicating more time/ budget towards their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Charitable giving. As a business-owner of GreenCode, and in my efforts to do my part, beyond donation, this article is an account of my favourite trip to Morocco so far. In this case, what had influenced this feeling was that I had decided to participate and offer my time to RifCom, a Gibraltar-registered charity, committed to making a real difference to our neighbouring communities in the Rif Mountains of Morocco. These communities are living practically within our sight and yet are living below the line, in poverty. The RifCom team visit Morocco regularly and each volunteer funds their own stay.

All monies collected go directly towards the communities in need, and in this case, a small town in the Chaoen region.

One of the main pillars of the RifCom way of offering assistance is to ensure that those receiving assistance are willing to be active participants in the different programmes. The organisers and trustees have spent many years building close relationships with numerous individuals and community groups across the Rif and on this round trip, our focus was to co-design and co-coordinate a football tournament with and for young people in a small village in the Chaouen region.

In preparation for the big day, the RifCom volunteers had raised money via sponsorship from a variety of Gibraltar Companies to buy and print football kits for the participants, arrange for medals for celebrating participation along with useful gifts such as reusable bottles, toothbrushes and toothpaste. All these items were transported over from Spain and Gibraltar and assembled together with the team at a beautiful hotel hidden away in a small village called Tissouka.

The location was spectacular, the food was delicious and the people, warm and welcoming. The air was filled with excitement as we pumped up the music and prepared the backpacks for all young participants for the following day.

Meanwhile, about 30 mins drive away from the hotel, other volunteers along with the entire town, were preparing the game grounds! All were physica-

Dicen que, si haces algo en la vida, hazlo con todo el corazón. Después de la pandemia y con todas las guerras y catástrofes en el mundo, las empresas están dedicando más tiempo y presupuesto a su Responsabilidad Social Corporativa (RSC) y a las donaciones benéficas. Como empresario de GreenCode, y en mi esfuerzo por hacer mi parte, más allá de la donación, este artículo es un relato de mi viaje favorito a Marruecos hasta ahora. En este caso, lo que había influido en este sentimiento era que había decidido participar y ofrecer mi tiempo a RifCom, una organización benéfica registrada en Gibraltar, comprometida a marcar una diferencia real con nuestras comunidades vecinas en las montañas del Rif de Marruecos. Estas comunidades viven prácticamente al alcance de nuestra vista y, sin embargo, viven por debajo de la línea, en la pobreza. El equipo de RifCom visita regularmente Marruecos y cada voluntario financia su propia estancia.

Todo el dinero recaudado se destina directamente a las comunidades necesitadas y, en este caso, a un pequeño pueblo de la región de Chaoen.

Uno de los principales pilares de la forma de ofrecer asistencia de RifCom es asegurarse de que los que reciben la ayuda estén dispuestos a participar activamente en los diferentes programas. Los organizadores y administradores llevan muchos años estableciendo estrechas relaciones con numerosas personas y grupos comunitarios de todo el Rif y, en este viaje de ida y vuelta, nos centramos en codiseñar y coordinar un torneo de fútbol con y para los jóvenes de un pequeño pueblo de la región de Chaouen.

Para preparar el gran día, los voluntarios de RifCom habían recaudado dinero a través del patrocinio de diversas empresas gibraltareñas para comprar e imprimir equipaciones de fútbol para los participantes, organizar medallas para celebrar la participación y regalos útiles como botellas reutilizables, cepillos de dientes y pasta dentífrica. Todos estos artículos se transportaron desde España y Gibraltar y se reunieron con el equipo en un hermoso hotel escondido en un pequeño pueblo llamado Tissouka.

El lugar era espectacular, la comida deliciosa y la gente, cálida y acogedora. El aire se llenó de emoción mientras subíamos la música y preparábamos las mochilas de todos los jóvenes participantes para el día siguiente.

Mientras tanto, a unos 30 minutos en coche del ho-

It was a tremendous scene of resourcefulness, community spirit with great energy.

Match day swiftly came upon us and there was a buzz in the air. Girls and boys alike, grouped into their teams, proudly dressed up in their brand new kits, preparing themselves for kick off! The fruit of all efforts were the smiles seen on the faces of all participants, their coaches and parents, not to mention now having facilitated the formation of a space to play sports within the village which had not previously existed.

The tournament went on until the early afternoon alongside workshops run by another charity Dental Mavericks and Morocco’s Red Cross team. Official photographs were taken of all teams. Beyond the handout of medals for participation - trophies were handed out and a cheer of thanks filled the air for all organisers and collaborators including the Hotel owner who hosted us all.

Being part of the transformation within this rural community was a major part of the RifCom experience. But now having been embraced by the RifCom Family, I am met with other opportunities to create impact in the region but also fill my own cup.

The RifCom family are avid ramblers and explorers, always looking for an adventure. They hold regular social hikes and events as well as more charitable challenges, at times in lands far away. The last experience was Jordan and the upcoming one is a hike through the Anti-atlas, raising money for more activities such as facilitating the building of schools and other public amenities for the Rif communities to enjoy.

Should you wish to join on the next experience, do not hesitate to get in touch with the RifCom team. I assure you, it will be an experience that you will never forget. Regardless of how you choose to give back to the world, do so with full heart.

Los lugareños trabajaron durante la noche del día anterior a los juegos, para construir estructuras para dar sombra y colocar sólidos postes de madera para sostener las vallas de seguridad. Fue una escena tremenda de ingenio, espíritu comunitario y gran energía.

El día de los partidos llegó rápidamente y se respiraba un gran entusiasmo. Tanto las chicas como los chicos, agrupados en sus equipos, se vestían con orgullo con sus flamantes equipaciones y se preparaban para dar el pistoletazo de salida. El fruto de todos los esfuerzos fueron las sonrisas que se vieron en los rostros de todos los participantes, de sus entrenadores y de sus padres, por no mencionar que ahora se ha facilitado la formación de un espacio para practicar deportes en el pueblo que no existía anteriormente.

El torneo se prolongó hasta las primeras horas de la tarde, junto con los talleres organizados por otra organización benéfica, Dental Mavericks, y el equipo de la Cruz Roja de Marruecos. Se tomaron fotografías oficiales de todos los equipos. Más allá de la entrega de medallas por la participación, se repartieron trofeos y una ovación de agradecimiento llenó el aire para todos los organizadores y colaboradores, incluido el propietario del hotel que nos acogió a todos.

Formar parte de la transformación de esta comunidad rural fue una parte importante de la experiencia RifCom. Pero ahora que la familia de RifCom me ha acogido, se me presentan otras oportunidades para crear un impacto en la región, pero también para llenar mi propia copa.

La familia RifCom son ávidos senderistas y exploradores, siempre en busca de aventuras. Organizan regularmente caminatas y eventos sociales, así como retos más benéficos, a veces en tierras lejanas. La última experiencia fue en Jordania y la próxima es una caminata por el Antiatlas, para recaudar fondos para más actividades, como facilitar la construcción de escuelas y otros servicios públicos para las comunidades del Rif.

Si quieres participar en la próxima experiencia, no dudes en ponerte en contacto con el equipo de RifCom. Le aseguro que será una experiencia que nunca olvidará. Independientemente de la forma en que decida devolver al mundo, hágalo con todo el corazón.

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust is an independent statutory body entrusted with the preservation of Gibraltar’s heritage. It aims to work in partnership with all like-minded bodies, both locally and internationally. The Trust is responsible to the people of Gibraltar for the preservation and enhancements of all aspects of Gibraltar’s heritage, which includes promotion culturally, educationally and in terms of tourism both for our local population and internationally. It works closely with the Government of Gibraltar and the private sector in fulfilling its aims. Operating on a not for profit basis all funding for Trust projects are raised through our annual membership drive, our commercial activities or through specific project targeted fundraising. All funds generated are applied to achieving the aims and objectives of the Trust.

The Trust has a number of statutory and strategic functions to:

1.- Safeguard and enhance the quality and condition of Gibraltar’s historic environment.

7.- Be open, responsive, transparent, effective and efficient in our work.

Students of the School of Art of Cadiz do a Company Internship at OTWO

Alumnos de la Escuela de Arte de Cádiz hacen las «Práctica de empresa» en OTWO

The education of future generations of students is one of the areas to which Energy Vision Group is most dedicated. both in the areas of environmental studies, specialized communication in ecology, cultural heritage, or the circular economy.

We were able to attract the interest of the School of Art of Cadiz for their students to do an internship in the group’s magazine OTWO Magazine owing to one of our partner firms, Motricity -thanks, José Antonio, we will always be obliged to you.

Our creative director, Juanjo Trujillo, visited the facilities and met the teachers and students. He introduced them to the publication and explained our way of working. Everyone was pleasantly surprised and eager to get started.

We talked to one of our subsidiary companies in Andalusia, Estudio de Eficiencia y Sostenibilidad, to close the agreement with the public education center EAC so that their students could do their internships at OTWO.

A few days later we received notification that four students had been selected. The internship began on April 18 and ended on May 24, i.e. 26 days and 150 hours.

Una de las áreas por las que más apuesta Energy Visión Group es el de la formación de las nuevas generaciones de jóvenes estudiantes. Tanto en el ámbito de la optimización energética, los estudios medioambientales y la comunicación especializada en ecología, patrimonio o economía circular.

Fue gracias a una de nuestras empresas asociadas, Motricity —gracias, José Antonio, siempre estaremos en deuda contigo—, que nos llegó el interés de la Escuela de Arte de Cádiz para que sus alumnos de diseño gráfico, gráfica publicitaria e ilustración hicieran las prácticas en la revista del grupo OTWO Magazine.

Nuestro director creativo, Juanjo Trujillo, visitó las instalaciones y conoció al profesorado y a los alumnos. Les presentó la publicación y les explico nuestra manera de trabajar. Todos quedaron gratamente sorprendido y deseosos de comenzar. Hablamos con una de nuestras empresas filiales en Andalucía, Estudio de Eficiencia y Sostenibilidad, para cerrar el acuerdo con el centro de educación pública EAC para que su alumnado hicieran las prácticas de empresa en OTWO.

Pocos días después recibimos la notificación de que se habían seleccionado cuatro estudiantes. Las prácticas comenzaron el día dieciocho de abril y terminaron el día veinticuatro de mayo, es decir, 26 días y 150 horas.

He was born in the southern city of Cadiz in the autumn of 1991. He has extensive training in the field of image: degree in Audiovisual Communication, Higher Level Training Cycle in Photography, CFGS in Advertising Graphics and advanced course in 3D animation. In her work she tries to show a concern for social issues such as feminism or ecology. Nació en la sureña ciudad de Cádiz en otoño de 1991. Cuenta con una amplia formación en el campo de la imagen: licenciatura en Comunicación Audiovisual, Ciclo Formativo de Grado Superior en Fotografía, CFGS en Gráfica Publicitaria y curso avanzado de animación 3D. En sus trabajos procura evidenciar una preocupación por cuestiones sociales como el feminismo o la ecología. Siente la necesidad de estar actualizada acerca de las nuevas tendencias artísticas y se deja influir por autores que han dejado huella en este ámbito, pues considera que la mejor manera de evolucionar es cimentando sus propuestas en una sólida fundamentación teórico-conceptual.

When she was a child, she did not have a clear vocation towards a specific profession, she never had a clear idea of what she was going to do. But looking back, she recognizes that she loved to draw, do crafts and spend a lot of time glued to the computer.

Her early education did not guide her to develop her artistic skills and talents. Until she searched until she discovered that in her city there was an Art School, at that moment she could see an open door to learn something that had always interested her. It is becoming increasingly clear to her that designing is what motivates her the most.

Cuando era pequeña, no tenía una vocación clara hacia una profesión concreta, nunca había tenido claro a que iba a dedicarse. Pero mirando atrás, reconoce le encantaba dibujar, hacer manualidades y pasar mucho tiempo pegada al ordenador.

Hecha en falta que en su educación inicial no la orientaran para poder potenciar sus habilidades y talentos artísticos. Hasta que buscó hasta descubrir que en su ciudad existía una Escuela de Arte, en ese momento pudo ver una puerta abierta para aprender algo que siempre le había interesado. Cada vez tiene más claro qué diseñar es lo que más la motiva.

His goal is to become a “professional concept artist”, working in video game studios and designing their characters, but illustration is also one of his passions, to which he gives a gloomy and not very colorful style and theme. He has always been interested in art direction, the profession with which he most identifies.

Su objetivo es convertirse en un «concept artist profesional», trabajando en estudios de videojuegos y diseñando sus personajes, pero la ilustración es también una de sus pasiones, a las que dota de un estilo y temática lúgubre y poco colorida. Siempre le ha interesado la dirección artística, profesión con la que más se identifica.

See out the final days of this year’s summer season with a fun-filled Saturday with an eco-conscious twist!

OTWO are very excited to announce the first annual ECO Fest on Saturday the 24th of September 2022 at Europa Pool.

ECO Festival is all about bringing people of all ages together to have a good time and learn more about local eco-initiatives, sustainability projects and awareness campaigns.

Please come along and join OTWO, together with various local environmental organisations, for some great activities, fantastic food, promotional stalls and live music, with proceeds from the day going to GBC Open Day.

The day will start at 10:30 am, with local cycling enthusiasts and campaigners riding a cycling route to promote safer cycling on the Rock. If cycling isn’t quite your thing, you can head straight to Europa Pool to greet the cyclists as they arrive... (or be the first to jump into the pool!)

The ECO Fest will be open all day from 10:30 am to 7 pm and will include:

· Safer Cycling Awareness route from the Small Boats Harbour via Line Wall Road and on to Europa Pool

· A BBQ lunch including vegetarian and vegan options

· Live music

· A bouncy castle

· Pool access and activities

· Marquee stalls hosted by local eco organisations and businesses (TBC)

· Fundraising activities for GBC open day, including the UCM Everesting Event

· Plus, much more to be announced

UCM Everesting Fundraising Event

The UCM Road & MTB Club Gibraltar will also be joining the ECO Festival and will spend the

day completing a unique fundraising feat!

The local cycling promotion club will be ‘Everesting’ their way up the Rock to raise funds for charity.

The concept of Everesting is simple but not for the faint-hearted! The idea is for a single rider or group of riders to cycle uphill repeatedly over the course of the day until they complete a total of 8,848m – the height of Mount Everest!

UCM has decided to do Everesting a little differently and in their own style. Instead of a single rider, groups of UCM cyclists will take it in turns until they complete the 8848m climb.

Starting at Europa Pool, groups of three riders will cycle via the lighthouse, then up to the top of the Rock. They will then descend via the Moorish Castle, cycle through Flat Bastion Road, down Europa Road by the Rock Hotel and head south along Jumpers Battery back to Europa Pool; the next three cyclists will then head off and do the same route and so on.

Each ride comes to an accumulated elevation of approximately 1200m (400m per rider). The journey takes about an hour and will take about 8 trips to complete the total height of Everest.

The UCM & MTB Club hope to make this an annual event, and all the funds they raise on 24th September will go to GBC Open Day!

Our three-year journey

This month, OTWO is celebrating three years of sharing its vision for a better, more sustainable future. The last few years have been a thrilling ride - one that has not only introduced us to a multitude of magnificent ecological and cultural projects in our local area but has also introduced us to incredible people, places and possibilities.

From its beginnings as a publication to promote local ecological and cultural hotspots, we at OTWO have worked hard to show as many people as possible the benefits, beauty and wonder of the natural and cultural treasures we have right on our doorstep. But since 2019, OTWO has evolved into more than we could have ever hoped for; a platform to raise awareness and fight for meaningful change and a channel for local activists, academics and eco-enthusiasts to have their voices heard.

A local vision with global ambitions

In early 2019, OTWOs Managing Director Vanessa Byrne wanted to do something proactive to raise awareness and hopefully leave behind a better world for her two young boys. News stories about the imminent threat of the climate crisis and our increasingly degraded natural environment made her want to make changes in her own life and contribute to bringing about change in our community.

“I started OTWO purely for my kids. I was worried about their future. My youngest was six months old at the time, and with the news focusing more on climate change and the state of our natural environment, I began to worry about their future and what we are leaving behind. I felt I had to contribute towards the cause in some way”.

At around the same time, Vanessa met OTWOs now Creative Director Juanjo Trujillo, a graphic designer based in Spain with more than a decade of experience working in the environmental sector. They quickly found that they shared similar views. After many meetings and long coffee-filled talks, they decided that they wanted to promote the natural world around us.

“We wanted to bet on sustainable tourism and healthy living”, Juanjo said, recalling the motivation that got them started. “Since I had more than ten years of experience working in this sector, we decided to put out a magazine showcases all these sites

Los últimos años han sido un viaje emocionante, que no sólo nos ha presentado una multitud de magníficos proyectos ecológicos y culturales en nuestra área local, sino que también nos ha presentado a personas, lugares y posibilidades increíbles.

Desde sus inicios como una publicación para promocionar los puntos calientes ecológicos y culturales locales, en OTWO hemos trabajado duro para mostrar al mayor número de personas posible los beneficios, la belleza y la maravilla de los tesoros naturales y culturales que tenemos justo en nuestra puerta. Pero desde 2019, OTWO ha evolucionado hasta convertirse en algo más de lo que podíamos esperar: una plataforma para concienciar y luchar por un cambio significativo y un canal para que los activistas locales, los académicos y los entusiastas de la ecología hagan oír su voz.

Una visión local con ambiciones globales A principios de 2019, la directora de la OTWO, Vanessa Byrne, quiso hacer algo proactivo para concienciar y, con suerte, dejar un mundo mejor para sus dos hijos pequeños. Más o menos al mismo tiempo, Vanessa conoció al Director Creativo de OTWO, Juanjo Trujillo, un diseñador gráfico afincado en España con más de veinte años de experiencia trabajando en el sector medioambiental. Pronto descubrieron que compartían puntos de vista similares. Tras muchas reuniones y largas charlas llenas de café, decidieron que querían promocionar el mundo natural que nos rodea.

«Queríamos apostar por el turismo sostenible y la vida sana», dijo Juanjo, recordando la motivación que les hizo empezar. «Como tengo muchos años de

Through some of Juanjo’s contacts, they arranged to visit various interpretation centres of the Junta de Andalucía in Huerta Grande, Barbate, San Fernando and Chiclana. What struck them was the lack of marketing and connections between the sites and potential visitors, so they set out to help promote these areas.

As they talked more between them, the idea for the magazine began to grow. Although the initial focus was to promote the natural and cultural sites in and around Gibraltar and Andalucía, they also wanted to help change minds, inspire, share ideas, and provide sustainable solutions to growing problems.

To get started, Vanessa took care of all the administrative and legal issues, and Juanjo began by submitting a publication proposal. Then they set up meetings several times a week to put together the magazine, contribute ideas and create prototypes.

The name OTWO came from one of Juanjo’s many logo designs for the company name, and it just seemed to make the most sense. As oxygen is one of the four essential elements for life on earth, the name symbolises our mission to contribute toward a clean and sustainable future, and to connect people with the natural world, allowing them to breathe, physically and emotionally.

With Juanjo’s contacts in Andalucía and many contributors in Gibraltar also jumping on board, content for the first issue came thick and fast. It seemed that a specialised media platform that focused on eco-tourism, health, culture and sustainability was a concept that many felt the area was lacking and sorely needed, suggesting that they had found a niche in the market.

Finally, by August 2019, the first edition of OTWO was ready to launch.

Ask anyone at OTWO what the magazine’s most significant achievement is to date, and they will all say putting out the first issue!

After months of hard work, the first issue was ready for the world to see. That first milestone, which back then felt like a monumental task, will forever remain one of OTWOs proudest moments.

A través de algunos contactos de Juanjo, consiguieron visitar varios centros de interpretación de la Junta de Andalucía en Huerta Grande, Barbate, San Fernando y Chiclana. Lo que les llamó la atención fue la falta de marketing y de conexiones entre los lugares y los potenciales visitantes, así que se propusieron ayudar a promocionar estas zonas.

A medida que hablaban más entre ellos, la idea de la revista empezó a crecer. Aunque el objetivo inicial era promocionar los parajes naturales y culturales de Gibraltar, Andalucía y sus alrededores, también querían ayudar a cambiar las mentes, inspirar, compartir ideas y ofrecer soluciones sostenibles a problemas crecientes.

Parecía que una plataforma mediática especializada centrada en el ecoturismo, la salud, la cultura y la sostenibilidad era un concepto que muchos consideraban que faltaba en la zona y que era muy necesario, lo que sugería que habían encontrado un nicho de mercado.

Finalmente, en agosto de 2019, la primera edición de OTWO estaba lista para lanzarse.

De 2019 a la actualidad (ejemplares 1 a 37)

Pregúntale a cualquiera en OTWO cuál es el logro más significativo de la revista hasta la fecha, y todos dirán que sacar el primer número.

“Putting out the first edition felt like a mission, one that was very nerve-wracking”, Vanessa said, remembering the weeks leading up to the launch. “Even though seeing the first magazine go out was quite stressful, it was completely worth it and rewarding”.

The first issue included articles promoting several natural sites visited months earlier, including the Natural Parks of the Bahia de Cadiz and the Brena and Marismas of Barbate. Regular collaborators EBike Gibraltar, The Nautilus Project and Sustainable Gibraltar also appeared in the first edition. Many of the relationships formed in the run-up and launch of OTWO 1 continue to this day.

By the end of 2019, new connections and collaborations were emerging. In December, OTWO started working with  Mi Moana, a non-profit, ocean-loving organisation founded in Mijas-Costa by mother and daughter team Natasha and Nicky Wegloop. The organisation is doing fantastic work in Andalucía to help protect and rid beaches, oceans and rivers of plastic.

Naturally, 2020 brought its own unique set of surprises and challenges. Ending on a high in 2019, OTWO was ready to take on 2020 with lots of big plans, but as you all know, we had to make some adjustments just like everyone else.

As the pandemic accelerated and lockdown started, OTWO had to revaluate how to continue releasing the magazine. Due to printing and supply issues and with everyone stuck at home, we had to adapt quickly and consider ways to cut some costs. Ultimately, we decided to continue releasing the magazine but solely as an e-version.

Looking back on those uncertain times, Vanessa said, “the pandemic put a lot of things on hold, so we had to revisit many of our goals. There were a lot of insecurities, but thankfully we overcame them by going online, and I think we have come out the other end in a good place. Tightening our belts and looking at other ways of communication has led to new things like the OTWO shop and other online opportunities.”

Tras meses de duro trabajo, el primer número estaba listo para que el mundo lo viera. Ese primer hito, que en aquel momento parecía una tarea monumental, será para siempre uno de los momentos de mayor orgullo en OTWO.

«Sacar el primer número fue una misión que nos puso los pelos de punta», dice Vanessa, recordando las semanas que precedieron al lanzamiento. “Aunque ver salir la primera revista supuso un enorme trabajo, valió la pena y fue muy gratificante».

El primer ejemplar incluía artículos que promocionaban varios parajes naturales visitados meses antes, como el Parque Naturale Bahía de Cádiz o el Parque Natural Breña y Marismas del Barbate. Los colaboradores habituales EBike Gibraltar, The Nautilus Project y Sustainable Gibraltar también aparecieron en la primera edición. Muchas de las relaciones que se formaron durante la preparación y el lanzamiento de la OTWO 1 continúan hasta hoy.

A finales de 2019, surgieron nuevas conexiones y colaboraciones. En diciembre, OTWO comenzó a trabajar con Mi Moana, una organización sin ánimo de lucro y amante del océano fundada en Mijas-Costa por el equipo de madre e hija Natasha y Nicky Wegloop. Al recordar aquellos tiempos de incertidumbre, Vanessa afirma que «la pandemia dejó muchas cosas en suspenso, por lo que tuvimos que revisar muchos de nuestros objetivos. In August 2020, just as everything began to open up again and around the first anniversary of our first edition, OTWO was honoured to receive its first local award recognising the work we had done over the previous twelve months. OTWO received the accolade of 2020 Sustainability Influencer at the Nautilus Project Sustainable Business Awards.

Then in October 2020, OTWO was shortlisted as a finalist in the Engagement for Sustainability (Business) category for the Gibraltar Sustainability Awards held by the Commissioner for Sustainable Development and Future Generations.

2021 was a big year for OTWO, with our list of contributors and collaborators continuing to grow. We were extremely fortunate to land an interview with the remarkable Benigno Varillas in April. As an award-winning journalist, writer and naturalist, Benigno has been an influential advocate for change and a champion of conservation in Spain since the 1970s. From there, April turned out to be a busy month. OTWO signed a collaboration agreement with COAMBA (Colegio de Ambientologos de Andalucía). Since then, COAMBA has showcased its many environmental projects and initiatives through OTWO.

On Good Friday 2021, OTWO held its first Safe Cycling event in Gibraltar. As part of our ‘Keep Calm and Support Safe Cycling’ campaign, local cyclists got together to cycle around Gibraltar to call for safer cycling conditions and improved green transport infrastructure on the Rock.

In June, we once again were humbled and honoured to win our second Nautilus Project Sustainable Business Award. Following the Influencer Award in 2020, OTWO picked up the Green Beacon Award for our work over the previous twelve months.

Our second safe cycling event also took place in June. Held on World Bicycle Day, it was bigger and better than the first, with local businesses, organisations and families participating in a group cycle finishing at Sandy Bay. Government Ministers also supported the event by joining the cyclists at Casemates.

OTWO ha seguido promocionando los magníficos parajes naturales y patrimoniales que nos rodean, tal y como siempre habíamos pretendido. El Grupo de Seguridad Ambiental, Verdemar Ecologistas en Acción, El Proyecto Nautilus, el Parque de Vida Silvestre de La Alameda y muchas más organizaciones fantásticas fueron protagonistas o contribuyeron a lo largo del año.

En agosto de 2020, justo cuando todo empezaba a abrirse de nuevo y en torno al primer aniversario de nuestra primera edición, OTWO tuvo el honor de recibir su primer premio «Influenciador de la Sostenibilidad 2020» en reconocimiento a la labor que habíamos realizado durante los doce meses anteriores. OTWO recibió el galardón en los Premios a la Empresa Sostenible del Proyecto Nautilus.

Luego, en octubre de 2020, OTWO fue preseleccionada como finalista en la categoría de Compromiso con la Sostenibilidad (Empresas) en los Premios a la Sostenibilidad de Gibraltar celebrados por el Comisionado para el Desarrollo Sostenible y las Generaciones Futuras.

2021 fue un gran año para OTWO, ya que nuestra lista de contribuyentes y colaboradores siguió creciendo. Tuvimos la gran suerte de conseguir una entrevista con el extraordinario Benigno Varillas en abril. Periodista, escritor y naturalista galardonado, Benigno ha sido un influyente defensor del cambio y un paladín de la conservación en España desde la década de 1970. A partir de ahí, abril resultó ser un mes intenso. OTWO firmó un acuerdo de colaboración con COAMBA (Colegio de Ambientólogos de Andalucía). Desde entonces, COAMBA selecciona entre sus afiliados reportajes mensuales tan sorprendentes como divulgativos.

El Viernes Santo de 2021, OTWO celebró su primer evento de ciclismo seguro en Gibraltar. Como parte de nuestra campaña «Keep Calm and Support Safe Cycling» (Mantén la calma y apoya el ciclismo seguro), los ciclistas locales se reunieron para pedalear por Gibraltar y pedir condiciones más seguras para el ciclismo y una mejor infraestructura de transporte verde en el Peñón.

Throughout this year, as some normality returned, OTWO has continued onward and upwards.

In January 2022, we acquired Eco Passion, a sustainable online store that carefully handpicks eco-friendly and plastic-free products for all your home and personal care needs.

OTWO continued its Safer Cycling Campaign in Gibraltar. The second Good Friday Cycle took place in April, with local cyclists calling for cost-efficient safety infrastructures such as improved signage and advance boxes at traffic lights.

A few months later, we intensified our Safer Cycling Campaign with Sustainable Transport advertising appearing on Gibraltar’s Buses in June. We are very grateful to the 30 businesses and organisations who have shown their support and are helping to spread awareness and encourage green mobility alternatives on the Rock.

2022 & Beyond

One of the best things about the last few years is the connections OTWO has made, helping us to make the platform a success.

“I am proud of the network we have created and the relationships we have built. They have all enabled us to build our vision and brand. Juanjo continues, “seeing how with each edition, more and more collaborators, specialists, companies, and institutions have joined us. With each issue, we increased the quality and prestige of the collaborators”.

And looking to the future, OTWO has some big plans. One of our first goals is to go back to printing and physically distribute the issues, which will hopefully happen sometime in the next twelve months.

The pandemic meant that OTWO had to cease

Nuestro segundo evento sobre el ciclismo seguro también tuvo lugar en junio. Celebrado en el Día Mundial de la Bicicleta, fue más grande y mejor que el primero, con empresas locales, organizaciones y familias que participaron grupalmente con sus bicicletas hasta su finalización en Sandy Bay. Los ministros del gobierno también apoyaron el evento uniéndose en Casemates.

Otro de nuestros muchos hitos en 2021 fue el inicio de nuestra inclusión en el Sistema de Información Científica de Andalucía (SICA). El SICA forma parte de la Secretaría General de Universidades, Investigación y Tecnología, cuyo objetivo principal es recoger y ofrecer información sobre las actividades científicas y de investigación de las universidades andaluzas.

A lo largo de este año, a medida que volvía la normalidad, OTWO ha seguido avanzando.

En enero de 2022, adquirimos Eco Passion, una tienda online sostenible que selecciona cuidadosamente productos ecológicos y sin plástico para todas sus necesidades de cuidado personal y del hogar.

OTWO continuó con su campaña de ciclismo seguro en Gibraltar. En abril se celebró la segunda edición de la Ciclovía del Viernes Santo, en la que los ciclistas locales reclamaron infraestructuras de seguridad rentables, como la mejora de la señalización y las cajas de anticipación en los semáforos.

Unos meses más tarde, en juio, intensificamos nuestra Campaña de Seguridad Ciclista con la aparición de publicidad sobre el transporte sostenible en los autobuses de Gibraltar. Estamos muy agradecidos a las 30 empresas y organizaciones que han mostrado su apoyo y están ayudando a difundir la concienciación y a fomentar las alternativas de movilidad ecológica en el Peñón.

2022 y más allá

Una de las mejores cosas de los últimos años son las conexiones que OTWO ha interconectado, ayudándonos a que la plataforma sea un éxito.

Coming up before the end of this year, we will be moving into new offices, and OTWO will hold its first ECO Festival on Saturday the 24th of September at Europa Pool. The festival is about people of all ages coming together to enjoy a fun-filled day with an eco-conscious twist. The day will include activities, music and food, and local organisations will attend with informative stalls. You can find more details here

The festival is part of a bigger plan to introduce Green Week Gibraltar. A weeklong event where local and international experts can share views and give informative talks. It will also be a platform to promote and protect local natural habitats and a hub where eco-friendly, locally sourced products can be marketed and sold. So, watch this space!

The next goal is to complete and fully launch the OTWO online shop, which has been in the works for the last year. The idea came from meeting countless talented local suppliers that offer fantastic eco-friendly and artisanal products but do not have the means to market and sell them to a larger audience.

There are also plans to create an informative and educational space for children called OTWO KIDS.

But the ultimate aim for OTWO is to expand our horizons. From early on, we knew that we wanted to aim as high as possible to increase OTWOs reach beyond Spain and Gibraltar and extend our vision internationally.

At the moment, OTWO Germany and OTWO Japan are in the works. We have made some great connections in both countries and are extremely excited by the prospect of reaching new audiences.

Most importantly, we want OTWO to be as ahead of the curve as possible, constantly aware of new developments and willing to evolve and adapt to an everchanging landscape. With the climate crisis already here and an urgent need for meaningful change, the many voices that inform, challenge and raise awareness through our platform must continue being heard.

El festival consiste en la asistencia de personas de todas las edades y que se reúnan para disfrutar de un día lleno de diversión y con un toque de conciencia ecológica. El festival forma parte de un plan más amplio para retomar la Semana Verde de Gibraltar. Nuestra propuesta internacional en Gibraltar y donde cada día estará dedicado a uno de los temas fundamentales relacionados con la problemática del medioambiente: desarrollo sostenible, eficiencia energética, la economía circular, etcétera. We have patted ourselves on the back quite a bit in this round-up of the last three years, but honestly, that is because we are very proud and passionate about what we have done and will continue to do. El siguiente objetivo es completar y poner en marcha la tienda online OTWO CAVE, en la que hemos estado trabajando durante el último año. La idea surgió al conocer a innumerables proveedores cercanos que ofrecen fantásticos productos ecológicos y artesanales, pero que no tienen los medios para comercializarlos para venderlos a un público más amplio.

También tenemos muy avanzado una propuesta para crear un espacio informativo y educativo para los niños llamado OTWO KIDS.

El objetivo final de OTWO es ampliar nuestros horizontes. Desde el principio, sabíamos que queríamos apuntar a lo más alto posible para aumentar el alcance de OTWO más allá de España y Gibraltar y ampliar nuestra visión a nivel internacional.

Por el momento, los proyectos de OTWO Alemania y OTWO Japón están casi listos. Además hemos conseguido grandes contactos en ambos países y estamos muy entusiasmados con la perspectiva de llegar a nuevas audiencias.

The heat energy absorbed from the sun is transferred to stored water through heat exchangers, which is then consumed by the user a hot water. The VirtuHOT allows customers to reduce their fossil fuel dependency and future-proof hot water supply.

VirtuPVT

Solar energy redefined. The VirtuPVT is a hybrid solar collector, combining solar thermal technology and photovoltaics (PV), generating both electricity and heat. Unlike conventional solar PV technology, which is restricted to only generating electricity, the VirtuPVT also seizes the sun’s energy to generate heat. With the same technology as the VirtuHOT, the VirtuPVT can capture the sun’s energy to heat water up to 80°C. Additionally, cells are bonded to the flat plate absorbers in the VirtuPVT, which convert the sun’s energy to electricity.

Local Case Study

It is estimated that, installing 120 VirtuPVT tubes in a small hotel in Gibraltar can meet 60% of the hotel’s thermal demand for hot water production AND produce 11,345 kWh of electricity a year in one, hybrid technology. The system can be paid back in 10 years and comes with the environmental benefits of saving 127 tonnes of CO2e. This amount of carbon saved, is equivalent to the amount of carbon needed to charge over 15 million smart phones or driving 27 cars for a year.

Three years can be a lifetime, but only if lived with intensity.Despite the fact that writing can convey it and pictures can capture the wonderful times we have had together, I believe these tools fall short. We are an odd, changeable, and erratic being. OTWO is a habitat or a connected mental community more than it is a magazine. Rhizomes between two continents. There is not a day that goes by that I do not read a fragment of the book “A Thousand Plateaus” by Deleuze and Guattari, perhaps that is why I look for a more holistic representation of an unfathomable reality in the data graph. From numbers of words per issue and topics, to the number of times a keyword appears in everything we have published. Or the presentation of a Treemap Voronoi with the proportions of the different types of content that live within OTWO. Pure geological and semantic crystallization in equal parts. Other continents, other looks, another way of perceiving and interpreting reality.

And we have taken such a liking to this invocation converted into data graphics that, from now on, and in every issue of OTWO, we will dedicate a space to represent that which escapes us, needs to materialize or be seen in another way.

A clear indication that the coast of Cadiz will soon be visited by its most loyal tourists—people who want to unwind in the sea or go for a stroll along the beach—is the gradual onset of heat and an increase in sunshine hours. These areas are constantly crowded with individuals seeking solace and a few days away from the stress of the rest of the year’s daily existence.

Every municipality in the province with a beach, looks forward to this time. They are all aware that they need to get started quickly to set the scene for the arrival of the tourists. The beaches must be kept clean, and there are manpower and material resources available to make sure this is the case all summer long.

However, times are changing. Concern for the rapid changes that are taking place in our environment reaches the coast, in itself one of the most sensitive habitats that exist. These changes will also be accelerated in the coming decades, if not years, by the effects of climate change, which in turn will show us the enormous value of the coast as a barrier to the effects of rising sea levels.

Poco a poco va llegando el calor y van aumentando las horas de sol, señal inequívoca de que el litoral de Cádiz va a ir recibiendo a sus visitantes más incondicionales, las personas con deseo de relajarse en las aguas de mar o dando un paseo por la playa. Año tras año, estos espacios se llenan de personas que buscan el esparcimiento y por unos días olvidar la presión de la vida cotidiana del resto del año.

Este momento es esperado por todos los Ayuntamientos de la provincia que disponen de playas. Todos saben que deben empezar pronto a preparar el escenario para la llegada de los veraneantes. Las playas deben estar limpias y para eso se cuenta con personal y recursos materiales que asegurarán que así sea durante todo el periodo de verano.

Sin embargo, los tiempos cambian. La preocupación por los rápidos cambios que está teniendo nuestro entorno llega al litoral, de por sí unos de los hábitats más sensibles que existen. Estos cambios además se van a ver acelerados en las próximas décadas, si no años, por los efectos del cambio climático, que a su vez nos dejará ver el enorme valor de la costa como barrera ante los efectos de la subida del nivel del mar.

This reality should make us think that our way of acting cannot continue to be the same as when this sun and beach tourism was invented. Decisions, methods, tools and everything related to the maintenance of beaches during the summer must change and adapt to the new reality we live in.

Research on these issues speaks for itself. The quantities of sand that are removed during beach cleaning processes are astonishing. At the same time, other elements of great value are removed, such as shells, stones and even seeds or bulbs of the plants that retain the sands and form the coastal dunes.

The Cadiz Provincial Council, through the agreement with the Official Association of Environmentalists of Andalusia, COAMBA, is aware of these changes and the need to adapt, therefore, organizes since 2020 the course “Good working practices on the coast and the importance of the ecosystem” aimed at people involved in the processes of cleaning and maintenance of beaches in the coastal municipalities of Cadiz, of which this year we have had the III Edition.

The 2020 and 2021 editions were developed in pandemic, so the course was developed mostly online, except for the practical visits to the beaches. But in this 2022 edition, with the decrease in the incidence of the virus, it has allowed to develop the activity in the field, organizing three face-to-face sessions and two trips to beaches.

The face-to-face sessions, lasting two to three hours, were held on Fridays; May 6 in La Línea de la Concepción, May 13 in Chipiona and May 27 in La Línea de La Concepción, again, for having the largest number of registered participants in this municipality.

In these conferences, various aspects of ecology and coastal dynamics, knowledge of the most relevant plant and animal species, the effect of invasive exotic species, pressures and proposals for improvement, the relationship between maintenance techniques and their effects on the environment, etc. were discussed. Oral presentations and group dynamics were used to reinforce some topics of special interest.

The main objective of the visits to beaches was to verify in situ the different contents worked on in the classroom sessions. This year the Sobrevela beach in

Las decisiones, los métodos, las herramientas y todo lo relacionado con el mantenimiento de las playas durante el verano debe cambiar y adaptarse a la nueva realidad que nos toca vivir.

Las investigaciones sobre estas cuestiones hablan por sí solas. Las cantidades de arena que se retiran durante los procesos de limpieza de playas son sorprendentes. A su vez se eliminan otros elementos que son de gran valor, como conchas, piedras e incluso semillas o bulbos de las plantas que retienen las arenas y forman las dunas costeras.

La Diputación de Cádiz, a través del convenio con el Colegio Oficial de Ambientólogos de Andalucía, COAMBA, es consciente de estos cambios y de la necesidad de adaptación, por ello, organiza desde 2020 el curso «Buenas prácticas de trabajo en el litoral y la importancia del ecosistema» dirigido a personas implicadas en los procesos de limpieza y mantenimiento de playas en los municipios costeros de Cádiz, del que este año hemos tenido la III Edición.

Las ediciones de 2020 y 2021 se desarrollaron en pandemia, por lo que el curso se desarrolló en su mayor parte online, salvo las visitas prácticas a las playas. Pero en esta edición de 2022, con la bajada de la incidencia del virus, ha permitido desarrollar la actividad sobre el terreno, organizando tres sesiones presenciales y dos salidas a playas.

Las sesiones presenciales de dos a tres horas de duración, se ejecutaron los viernes; 6 de mayo en La Línea de la Concepción, el 13 de mayo en Chipiona y el 27 de mayo en La Línea de La Concepción, nuevamente, por contar con el mayor número de participantes inscritos en este término municipal. En estas jornadas se trabajaron diversos aspectos de la ecología y la dinámica litoral, conocimiento de las especies vegetales y animales más relevantes, el efecto de las especies exóticas invasoras, presiones y propuestas de mejora, relación entre técnicas de mantenimiento y sus efectos sobre el medio, etc. Se emplearon exposiciones orales y dinámicas de grupos para reforzar algunos temas de especial interés.

Las visitas a playas han tenido como principal objetivo comprobar in situ los diferentes contenidos trabajados en las sesiones presenciales. Este año se han elegido la playa de Sobrevela en La Línea de La

In this edition 64 people have enrolled in the course, mainly from several coastal municipalities of Cadiz. The profile of students in this edition was more varied than in the previous one, as there were beach cleaners, beach management technicians and graduates belonging to the Official Association of Environmentalists of Andalusia. Likewise, the group belonging to the Official Association of Environmentalists of Andalusia had a varied profile, from recent graduates to people with experience in other fields of consultancy and field work.

In addition to the good number of participants, other aspects help to conclude that this training initiative is fulfilling its function. For example, participants are highly motivated to adapt their work to benefit the conservation of beaches as natural habitats, always in balance with tourism use. To this end, they made it clear in the dynamics and exercises that more training is needed for all those involved in the maintenance of beaches, both technically and ecologically. In this line, they propose an increase in investment that has an impact on technical updating and prioritizing manual labor whenever machinery can be dispensed with. The students emphasize, once again, the need to improve environmental education and awareness, including in this chapter the general public, as a way to reduce pressure on the beaches.

The icing on the cake of this edition has been the identification on the beach of Sobrevela de La Línea de La Concepción of a species included in the List and Catalog of Threatened Flora and Fungi of Andalusia, with the category of Vulnerable, Jasione corymbosa Poir. ex Schult (Campanulaceae). This species was considered extinct throughout the Iberian Peninsula until a few years ago, when a group of botanists located it on a beach in Malaga. Since then, this population has been the only one existing in the Iberian Peninsula - taking into account that it is a plant endemic to the Betic-Mauritanian area - and in the whole of Europe. The Sobrevela population was unknown in this area, until now that Juan Manuel Ortiz Herrera, biologist of Atlántida Medio Ambiente, located it during the COAMBA course on May 27th

Concepción, visitada el 27 de mayo y la playa de Los Corrales en Rota, cuya visita fue el 31 de mayo. En esta edición se han inscrito al curso 64 personas, principalmente de varios ayuntamientos litorales de Cádiz. El perfil de alumnado de esta edición ha sido más variado que en la anterior, ya que se disponía de operarios de limpieza de playa, técnicos gestores de esta y licenciados y graduados pertenecientes al Colegio Oficial de Ambientólogos de Andalucía. Asimismo, el grupo perteneciente al Colegio Oficial de Ambientólogos de Andalucía tenían perfil variado, desde recién graduados, hasta personas con experiencia en otros campos de la consultoría y trabajo de campo. Además del buen número de participantes, otros aspectos ayudan a concluir que esta iniciativa de formación está cumpliendo su función. Por ejemplo, es alta la motivación de los participantes por adaptar su trabajo en beneficio de la conservación de las playas como hábitats naturales, siempre en equilibrio con el uso turístico. Para ello, dejan claro en las dinámicas y ejercicios realizados, que es necesaria más formación de todas las personas implicadas en el mantenimiento de las playas, tanto a nivel técnico, como ecológico. En esta línea proponen un aumento en la inversión que repercuta en la actualización técnica y en priorizar las labores manuales siempre que se pueda prescindir de maquinaria. El alumnado recalca, una vez más, la necesidad de mejorar la educación y la sensibilización ambiental, incluyendo en este capítulo a la ciudadanía en general, como vía para reducir la presión sobre las playas.

La guinda del pastel de esta edición ha sido la identificación en la Playa de Sobrevela de La Línea de La Concepción de una especie incluida en el Listado y Catalogo de Flora y Hongos Amenazados de Andalucía, con la categoría de Vulnerable, Jasione corymbosa Poir. ex Schult. (Campanulaceae). Esta especie se consideraba extinta en toda la Península Ibérica hasta hace unos años, momento, en el que un grupo de botánicos la localizó en una playa de Málaga. Desde entonces, esa población ha sido la única existente en la Península Ibérica - teniendo en cuenta que es una planta endémica del área bético-mauritana- y en toda Europa. La población de Sobrevela era desconocida en esta zona, hasta ahora que Juan Manuel Ortiz Herrera, biólogo de Atlántida Medio Ambiente, la localizó durante la salida del curso del COAMBA del día 27 de mayo.

El camino de la naturaleza Bring on the birds

It’s no exaggeration to say that human activity has irrevocable ripple effects on ecosystems and the lives of all species contained within. Noise and light pollution, roadways causing territory fragmentation and the country size amounts of trash humans produce are only some of the ways we mar the beauty of the earth.

It is no great wonder why migratory birds have all but vanished in certain areas. Development means certain species returning after some time away discover that their breeding grounds have become a parking lot. The pandemic provided the ultimate field test – what happens when the human world goes quiet?

This is exactly what a pan-American team of researchers sought to explore with funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Did nature find its way?

Yes! With a massive decline in human activity, migratory birds started returning to their old territories. Ruby-throated hummingbirds and bald eagles were suddenly expanding their explorations and were spotted in areas they were never seen before. In other words, if humans were to disappear overnight, nature would be okay.

Esto es exactamente lo que un equipo panamericano de investigadores trató de explorar con financiación del Consejo de Investigación de Ciencias Naturales e Ingeniería de Canadá.

DESCRIPTION

A light meal for the hot summer day.

INGREDIENTS

2 Large Mushrooms.

1/2 Finely chopped onion.

1 Finely chopped garlic clove.

1 teaspoon butter.

2 tablespoons olive oil.

1 large cup cooked and drained spinach.

2 tablespoons of cream cheese.

1 cup grated mozzarella cheese.

Pinch oregano.

Pinch salt.

Cherry tomatoes.

Salad leaves.

METHOD:

Preheat oven 180 degrees.

Wash and dry the mushrooms then place in the oven for 10 minutes drain excess liquid and set aside.

Heat the butter and olive oil in a frying pan and add onions and garlic until soft remove from heat .

Add the spinach, cream cheese,salt and oregano.

Spoon mixture into the mushrooms.

Top with mozzarella and decorate with cherry tomato’s.

Place back in the oven until cheese is melted and golden.

Serve with salad leaves and cherry tomato’s.

Una comida ligera para los calurosos días de verano.

INGREDIENTES

2 Setas grandes .

1/2 Cebolla finamente picada.

1 diente de ajo finamente picado.

1 cucharadita de mantequilla.

2 cucharadas de aceite de oliva.

1 taza grande de espinacas cocidas y escurridas.

2 cucharadas de queso crema.

1 taza de queso mozzarella rallado.

Una pizca de orégano.

Pizca de sal.

Tomates cherry.

Hojas de ensalada.

PREPARACIÓN:

Precalentar el horno a 180 grados.

Lavar y secar los champiñones y meterlos en el horno durante 10 minutos, escurrir el exceso de líquido y reservar.

Calentar la mantequilla y el aceite de oliva en una sartén y añadir las cebollas y el ajo hasta que se ablanden, retirar del fuego.

Añadir las espinacas, el queso crema, la sal y el orégano.

Colocar la mezcla en los champiñones con una cuchara.

Cubrir con mozzarella y decorar con tomates cherry.

Volver a meter en el horno hasta que el queso esté derretido y dorado.

Servir con hojas de ensalada y tomates cherry.

Whilst there is a rich history of defence on the Rock of Gibraltar there is no one organisation that takes responsibility for the upkeep of the various guns and other military positions.

It is my mission to do my best to restore, renovate and refurbish as many of these sights as possible to ensure our heritage and history is not lost to neglect.

This has been a completely voluntary project which has recieved minimum adhoc funding. Any donations will go towards the purchasing of the necessary materials and equipment to continue this project.

Nos motivan, nos sirven de estímulo y nos empujar a reaccionar.

Si a una emoción le añadimos un pensamiento, se convierte en un sentimiento, siempre que seamos capaces de tomar conciencia de ello.

Desde pequeños no nos han enseñado a amar y cuidar nuestras raíces. Hablo de raíces porque es de dónde venimos, todos somos y formamos parte de la Naturaleza.

Hemos sobrevivido este tiempo buscando encajar en nuestra sociedad, sin poder ser uno mismo o lo que es mucho peor, sin dedicarnos momentos para sentir. Nada es permanente, todo cambia, estamos en continuo movimiento, liderado por el estrés, el trabajo, los horarios… ¿Quieres saber que tiene que ver la Naturaleza en todo esto?

Potencia el sentido de lo natural, el Baño de Bosque es una reconexión con la naturaleza mediante los sentidos, pasear pocos kilómetros, dejando a tu intuición fluir siguiendo mis consejos.

In the Natural Park Los Alcornocales, the Pinar del Rey is located between the municipalities of San Roque and Castellar de la Frontera, in Cadiz.

Its origin dates back to 1800, this place was chosen to plant pine trees (Pinus Pinea) brought from Vejer de la Frontera, and thus obtain wood for the construction of ships.

It currently consists of a recreational area with a picnic area and barbecues, the Alhaja stream, the Nature Classroom and a botanical garden. In addition, there are two trails: El Cerro del Águila and Tajo del Pajarraco.

A peculiar place, with a mild climate, and a migratory bird route. Its environmental conditions make it a paradise for flora. We can even see some plants that only occur in northern Spain and the Canary Islands. We will walk through a mixed forest, with cork oaks, gall oaks, poplars, alders and ash trees, with a wide variety of botanical species, some of them endangered. In addition, of course we will discover its rich and varied fauna.

In addition, the Pinar del Rey, was part of a sandy seabed settlement, so we can easily find shells and marine pieces.

En el Parque Natural Los Alcornocales, se ubica el Pinar del Rey entre los términos municipales de San Roque y Castellar de la Frontera, en Cádiz.

Su origen se remonta a 1800, este lugar fue elegido para plantar ejemplares de pinos piñoneros (Pinus Pinea) traídos desde Vejer de la Frontera, y obtener así madera para la construcción de navíos.

Actualmente consta de un área recreativa con una zona de picnic y barbacoas, el arroyo de Alhaja, el Aula de Naturaleza y un jardín botánico. Además, existen dos senderos: El Cerro del Águila y el Tajo del Pajarraco.

Un lugar peculiar, de clima suave, y paso de ruta de aves migratorias. Sus condiciones ambientales lo convierten en un paraíso para la flora. Incluso podemos ver algunas plantas que únicamente se dan en el norte de España y en las Islas Canarias. Recorreremos un bosque mixto, con alcornoques, quejigos, álamos, alisos y fresnos, con una extensa variedad de especies botánicas, algunas de ellas amenazadas. Y por supuesto descubriremos su rica y variada fauna.

Además, el Pinar del Rey, formó parte de un asentamiento arenoso de fondos marinos, con lo cual podremos encontrar fácilmente conchas y piezas marinas. Descubre el efecto acumulativo que tiene la naturaleza, los matices en los que nunca te habías fijado, la calma que ofrece un lugar con tanta magia.

Para comenzar la actividad dejaremos el coche al final del aparcamiento de la zona recreativa del Pinar del Rey (San Roque), es importante llevar agua, protección solar, (opcional esterilla para suelo y cámara de fotos).

Phytoncides are natural poisons that plants release to protect themselves, humans are exposed to them in contact with nature, but also through food. The green

It has been proven that shades of green are relaxing and help physical and psychological recovery. Green unconsciously takes us back to our first habitat where everything is born and renewed. Pictures of nature, photographs or a window to a park and a time of contemplation will be a good exercise at home.

La alimentación

Las fitoncidas son venenos naturales que liberan las plantas para protegerse, los humanos estamos expuestos a ellas en contacto con la naturaleza, pero también a través de la comida.

Las especies, el ajo, la cebolla y todo tipo de verdura son buenas para nuestra salud, tienen un efecto beneficioso que sería toxico en dosis muy altas, un ejemplo de ello es la cafeína que en dosis pequeñas es beneficiosa y en exceso llega a ser nociva.

El verde

Está comprobado que los tonos de color verdes resultan relajantes y ayudan a la recuperación física y psicológica. El verde nos remite de forma inconsciente a nuestro primer hábitat donde todo nace y renueva. Cuadros de naturaleza, fotografías o una ventana a un parque y un tiempo de contemplación será un buen ejercicio en casa.

Los cuidados de plantas de interior aportan muchos beneficios, mejora la calidad del aire a través de la fotosíntesis y según los estudios de la NASA se comprobó que estas capturan partículas de polvo (ejemplo las partículas del benceno, nociva para los humanos) y las llevan bajo sus raíces, eliminando estas de nuestro ambiente. Otro beneficio curioso es que las plantas absorben los ruidos, colocarlas cerca de ventanas nos ayudará a mantener más calma y armonía en nuestro hogar.

Los sonidos

El canto de los pájaros y no solo el trinar de las aves del bosque, los estudios de los que se hizo eco la revista Bioscience demostraba que una casa o lugar de trabajo desde la que se pueda oír las aves contribuye a descargar el estrés de las personas que están en este lugar.

En el caso de no estar cerca de las aves podemos usar la tecnología actual, al igual que oímos una canción de nuestro cantante favorito sin tener que ir al concierto, no es comparable pero nos ayudará a serenarnos y elevar nuestro estado de ánimo.

A magical route, the presence of the Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) in any of its cycles, the contact of a large part of the trail with the Guadarranque River, the undergrowth and riparian forest, as well as the milkweed plant on which the butterfly feeds. Millenary and centennial trees will give us shelter under their branches in a charming old meadow.

The view of the Castle of Castellar, a fortress that was part of the defense system of the Kingdom of Granada, one of many charms of the region. To your right, the Sierra del Endrinal in its entirety, highlighting the Simancón and the Clock.

Una ruta mágica, la presencia de la mariposa Monarca (Danaus plexippus) en cualquiera de sus ciclos, el contacto gran parte del sendero con el rio Guadarranque, el sotobosque y bosque de ribera, así como la planta del algodoncillo de la cual se alimenta dicha mariposa.

Árboles milenarios y centenarios nos darán cobijo bajo sus ramas en una antigua dehesa llena de encanto.

La visión del Castillo de Castellar, una fortaleza que formó parte del sistema de defensa del Reino de Granada uno de los encantos de la comarca. A su derecha la Sierra del Endrinal al completo, destacando el Simancón y el Reloj.

Además, es posible ver garzas, cormoranes, ciervos, jabalíes …Todo hace que sea una ruta perfecta para disfrutar en familia.

ADVENTURE ON COSTA DEL SOL CANYONING “GUADALMINA RIVER”

In the heart of the Costa del Sol is the municipality of Benahavis, very famous for its gastronomy. In this town we find the Narrows of the Guadalmina River, where our adventure takes place.

Canyoning consists of the descent of a river, usually in its upper section, where due to the erosion the river is modeled with very diverse forms where we will have to improvise handrails, jumps or rappels.

This canyon is considered Level 1 for its duration, but it is a totally initiation activity because all its difficulties are optional and we can always use an alternative way to overcome it.

For the adventure we will have all the necessary technical material: 3- or 5-mm wetsuits depending on the temperature, harness, helmet, and collective technical material for the descent.

The Ravine.

The Guadalmina River, located in Benahavís contains a sport area ideal for initiation to canyoning. It is an adventure considered level 1. During the tour we can enjoy natural slides, jumps from different heights and a final rappel of about 5 meters high.

At the landscape level, we will be able to enjoy very singular places. The spectacular Poza de las Mozas, more than 5 meters deep from where we will enjoy different jumps with the greatest security. La Cascada de la acequia, located in a small cavity, and with crystal clear waters. And the most spectacular part Los Cahorros del Guadalmina, very narrow areas in the form of a cave that we will cross swimming enjoying its beauty. Dare!

AVENTURA EN LA COSTA DEL SOL BARRANQUISMO «RIO GUADALMINA»

En plena Costa del Sol se encuentra el municipio de Benahavis, muy famoso por su gastronomía. En este pueblo nos encontramos con las Angosturas del Río Guadalmina, por donde trascurre nuestra aventura.

El barranquismo consiste en el descenso de un río, normalmente en su tramo alto, donde debido a la erosión modela el río con formas muy diversas donde tendremos que improvisar pasamanos, saltos o ráppeles.

Este barranco está considerado de Nivel 1 por su duración, pero es una actividad totalmente de iniciación ya que todas sus dificultades son opcionales y siempre podremos usar un camino alternativo para sortearla.

Para la aventura se dipondrá de todo el material técnico necesario: neoprenos 3 o 5 mm según la temperatura, arnés, casco, y material técnico colectivo para el descenso.

El Barranco.

El Río Guadalmina, situado en Benahavís contiene una zona deportiva ideal iniciacion para el tema de barranquismo. Es una aventura considerada de nivel 1.

Durante su recorrido podremos disfrutar de toboganes naturales, saltos desde diferentes alturas y un ráppel final de unos 5 metros de altura. A nivel paisajístico, podremos disfrutar de lugares muy singulares. La espectacular Poza de las Mozas, de más de 5 metros de profundidad desde donde disfrutaremos de diferentes saltos con la mayor seguridad. La Cascada de la acequia, situada en una pequeña cavidad, y con aguas cristalinas. Y la parte más espectacular Los Cahorros del Guadalmina, zonas muy estrechas en forma de cueva que cruzaremos a nado disfrutando de su belleza. ¡Atrévete!
