In our news shorts we are thrilled to provide more detail on the upcoming OTWO Eco Festival. Set to take place on September 23rd and 24th, this transformative festival promises to be an inclusive gathering where we can collectively explore and celebrate sustainable practices. Be part of the change and join us for a remarkable journey towards a better, more sustainable tomorrow.

Last month, Gibraltar University hosted a dynamic two-day conference on "Research that benefits Gibraltar". Engaging in pre-opening poster sessions, 3-minute thesis competitions, PhD research talks, and round table discussions with esteemed speakers, we witnessed the vibrant exchange of ideas aimed at finding sustainable solutions for our beloved region.

This month we share on page 37 how Trusted Novus takes a bold step towards fostering environmental change by inviting Louis Stagnetto from The Nautilus Project to give an informative presentation on Oceanic Climate Change. This inspiring collaboration empowers individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute actively to sustainable initiatives. Together, they exemplify the spirit of collective action in driving positive change.

The Aspire Special Feature took us on an incredible one-day conference held at the Sunborn, where leaders from diverse sectors in the building industry and environmental protection convened. This gathering of high-caliber speakers underscored the importance of unity and innovation in building a sustainable future for generations to come. Check it out on page 41.

On page 65, COAMBA shares an enlightening article on "Good working practices on the coast and

the importance of the ecosystem spread along the Andalusian coastline." This article emphasizes the significance of sustainable practices in preserving the delicate coastal ecosystems that play a pivotal role in maintaining ecological balance.

Al adentrarnos en las páginas de nuestra edición de agosto de 2023, nos encontramos inmersos en un mundo de inspiración, descubrimiento y dedicación inquebrantable a la sostenibilidad. Centrados en la conservación de la naturaleza y en la lucha contra el cambio climático, presentamos historias que ponen de relieve los increíbles esfuerzos y avances que estamos realizando para crear un futuro más ecológico y sostenible.

En nuestra sección de noticias, estamos encantados de ofrecer más detalles sobre el próximo Festival Ecológico de la OTWO. Este festival transformador, que se celebrará los días 23 y 24 de septiembre, promete ser un encuentro inclusivo en el que podremos explorar y celebrar colectivamente las prácticas sostenibles. Forme parte del cambio y únase a nosotros en un viaje extraordinario hacia un mañana mejor y más sostenible.

El mes pasado, la Universidad de Gibraltar acogió una dinámica conferencia de dos días sobre "Investigación que beneficia a Gibraltar". Participando en sesiones de pósters previas a la inauguración, concursos de tesis de 3 minutos, charlas de investigación doctoral y mesas redondas con estimados ponentes, fuimos testigos del vibrante intercambio de ideas encaminadas a encontrar soluciones sostenibles para nuestra querida región.

Este mes compartimos en la página 37 cómo Trusted Novus da un paso valiente para fomentar el cambio medioambiental invitando a Louis Stagnetto, del Proyecto Nautilus, a dar una presentación informativa sobre el cambio climático oceánico. Esta inspiradora colaboración dota a las personas de los conocimientos y habilidades necesarios para contribuir activamente a iniciativas sostenibles. Juntos, ejemplifican el espíritu de la acción colectiva para impulsar un cambio positivo. El especial Aspire nos llevó a una increíble conferencia de un día celebrada en el Sunborn, donde se reunieron líderes de diversos sectores de la industria de la construcción y la protección del medio ambiente. Esta reunión de ponentes de alto calibre subrayó la importancia de la unidad y la innovación para construir un futuro sostenible para las generaciones venideras. Véalo en la página 41.

En la página 65, el COAMBA comparte un esclarecedor artículo sobre "Las buenas prácticas de trabajo en la

costa y la importancia del ecosistema extendido por el litoral andaluz". Este artículo destaca la importancia de las prácticas sostenibles para preservar los delicados ecosistemas costeros que desempeñan un papel fundamental en el mantenimiento del equilibrio ecológico.

La segunda edición del Eco Festival regresa con un espectacular cartel de puestos de mercado, música en directo, entretenimiento infantil y actividades en la piscina.

El equipo OTWO, organizador del exitoso Eco Festival del año pasado, se complace en anunciar el regreso de este esperado acontecimiento en su segunda edición. Basándose en la abrumadora respuesta del año anterior, el festival promete ser más grande, mejor y más ecológico que nunca. El evento tendrá lugar los sábados 23 y 24 de septiembre de 2023 en la Piscina Europa de Gibraltar.

Esta extravagancia de dos días contará con una impresionante variedad de puestos de mercado, actuaciones musicales en directo, entretenimiento infantil, 2 zonas chill out y refrescantes actividades en la piscina para asistentes de todas las edades.

Our friends of the Ateneo de la Bahía have organized in the hall of the Círculo Mercantil of La Línea, together with the Asociación Memoria de Algeciras

and of course with the invaluable collaboration of Garcisánchez's relatives an amazing exhibition about this first level photographer during the first half of the 20th century.

In the wide and varied work of Garcisánchez a very careful aesthetic is appreciated, offering images of great plasticity as it corresponds to a photographer with artistic formation. In the studio work, mainly portraits, these artistic concerns are manifested in innovative framing, risky lighting, close-ups that make up a collection of portraits of great quality in which the psychology of the character that flows through the expression and pose.The photos of streets, squares, market or activity in the sea show the beautiful essence of our people. Lively life despite the difficult years. The elegance of our countrymen, the well-kept appearance of the streets, the sea as protagonist and always the joy of this town that already liked to immortalize itself with this art that was beginning. All this is the legacy of a great humble worker who shows us a very real past of great historical value.

Garcisanchez's work is aesthetically neat, with images of great plasticity. In his studio work, mainly portraits, he uses innovative framing, risky lighting and close-ups to create portraits of great quality that convey the psychology of the character through expression and pose.

Nuestros amigos del Ateneo de la Bahía han organizado en el salón del Círculo Mercantil de La Línea, junto con la Asociación Memoria de Algeciras y por supuesto con la inestimable colaboración de los familiares de Garcisánchez una sorprendente exposición sobre este fotógrafo de primer nivel durante la primera mitad del siglo XX.

En la amplia y variada obra de Garcisánchez se aprecia una estética muy cuidada, ofreciendo imágenes de gran plasticidad como corresponde a un fotógrafo con formación artística. En el trabajo de estudio, fundamentalmente retratos, estas inquietudes artísticas se manifiestan en encuadres novedosos, iluminación arriesgada, primeros planos que conforman toda una colección de retratos de gran calidad en los que prima la psicología del personaje que fluye a través de la expresión y de la pose.Las fotos de calles, plazas, mercado o de la actividad en el mar muestran la esencia hermosa de nuestro pueblo. Vida animada a pesar de los años difíciles. La elegancia de nuestros paisanos, el aspecto cuidado de las calles, el mar como protagonista y siempre la alegría de este pueblo al que ya le gustaba inmortalizase con este arte que estaba comenzando. Todo ello es el legado de un

Since 2015 we are very proud to say that Metalrok Ltd has been providing Gibraltar with a Recycling Service at the premises delivered by the government of Gibraltar Ecopark which is a joint public and private partnership located at 8 Flint Road. There has been an increase in Recycling but even so our daily waste stream contains goods which are perfectly suited to be reused not been recycled ending up in the landfill polluting the environment.

Together we can turn this around by reusing, preventing pollution, reducing usage of raw materials, sustaining the environment for future generations thus preventing them from ending in landfill and sea.

There is a need for these items in places like Senegal in West Africa were there are areas of extreme Poverty. with your cooperation we would like to meet their necessities by helping to provide them with donated unwanted items. At present we are only accepting donations for clothing and bedlinen.

We are collecting items that are still good for purpose and in usable condition in a bid to give them a new lease of life. Kindly take note that we will not make ourselves responsible for the collection of broken down items. The circumstances these people unfortunately live in deserve a sense of dignity and pride. Please only get in touch for items that will enhance and enrich their livelihoods.

Against the myth of ecological collapse.

Fear paralyzes you— it takes a lot of courage to read any report on the current climate situation—and prevents any possibility of reaction.

That is what Emilio Santiago tries to avoid with this book, refuting the collapseist thesis with a more hopeful and combative vision. It is time to transcend the silence of the lambs and a disoriented environmentalism by showing a catalog of inspiring experiences or reminding us of all those collapses that never were.

But he also analyzes collapsism as an ideo-

logy and state of mind, redefining it as another example of the failed state.

Emilio Santiago is a social activist, founder of the Institute for Transformation Breaks the Circle, PhD in Anthropology and senior scientist at CSIC.

Every time new ways of reading the sociological crisis we are suffering appear. And the one proposed by Marco Armiero is determined by the tireless production of people, communities and places of waste. He also proposes that we accompany him on his journey from Naples to Agbogbloshie (Ghana) to

travel through the heart of the Wastocene with its depressing collection of landfills. But he also shows us the different types of strategies and experiences that some communities are making to combat it.

The author is Professor of Research at the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies ICREA, in the Department of History of Science at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. For ten years he directed the Environmental Humanities Laboratory at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH) and is the current president of the European Society for Environmental History. If we were aware of what is at stake in our food choices, we would live in a better world. Pollan - one of America's most original and elegant authors - attempts to answer the omnivore's dilemma: What's for dinner tonight? To do so, he exposes us to the different food chains: industrial, organic or alternative and the one we prepare ourselves depending on our habits. However, it is impossible to separate our decision to eat from certain political, economic, psychological and even moral implications. In other words, eating is a political fact, and if you manage to change the way you eat, you are also changing the way politics is done. A beautiful book by this journalist, activist and professor of journalism at the University of California, Berkeley.

Sin embargo es imposible desligar nuestra decisión de comer de ciertas implicaciones políticas, económicas, psicológicas e incluso morales. Es decir, comer es un hecho político, y si consigues cambiar tu forma de alimentarte, también estás cambiando la forma en que se hace la política.

Ainhoa Algeciras, el poder de la adaptación gráfica

We feel an immense pleasure every time a student of the School of Art of Cadiz decides to do the "internship" with us. This year we have been honored that Ainhoa Algeciras, born in El Puerto de Santamaría, has chosen our magazine. A talented designer with a strong eye for detail. She is able to work independently and as part of a team, and is always willing to go the extra mile. She is also an excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing.

During her internship, she was responsible for a variety of tasks, demonstrating her versatility to adapt to different graphic styles, the speed with which she perceives concepts and the seriousness and resolution with which she executes them. She always exceeded expectations and produced high quality results. She was also a valuable asset to the team, always willing to adapt to whatever was requested.

From some initial approaches very close to manga aesthetics, her referents are: Shigenori Soejima, Boichi and Tetsuya Nomura - quite a statement of intent - as she has been doing internships, Ainhoa brought out a dazzling ability of graphic versatility. It should not be forgotten that an illustrator's style can change over time for a number of reasons, such as personal growth, artistic development or new techniques she discovers. Sometimes the change in style can be gradual, while other times it can be more drastic. In any case, it is important that the illustrator is comfortable with her own style and does not feel pressured to change it to adapt to current trends.

Sentimos un inmenso placer cada vez que una alumna de la Escuela de Arte de Cádiz decide hacer las «prácticas de empresa» con nosotros. Este año hemos tenido el honor de que Ainhoa Algeciras, nacida en El Puerto de Santamaría, haya escogido nuestra revista. Diseñadora talentosa con un fuerte ojo para el detalle. Ella es capaz de trabajar de manera independiente y como parte de un equipo, y siempre está dispuesta a ir más allá. También es una excelente comunicadora, tanto verbal como por escrito. Durante sus prácticas, fue responsable de una variedad de tareas, demostrando su versatilidad para adaptarse a diferentes estilos gráficos, la rapidez con la que percibe los conceptos y la seriedad y resolución con los que los ejecuta. Siempre superó las expectativas y produjo resultados de alta calidad. Ella también fue un activo valioso para el equipo, siempre dispuesta para adaptarse a lo que se le solicitaba.

A ground-breaking conference of research conducted at University of Gibraltar with Gibraltar at its heart.

The ‘Research that Benefits Gibraltar Conference 2023’ held at Europa Point Campus, University of Gibraltar held on the 14th June and 15th June 2023. The aim of the conference was to showcase the research that is being undertaken at the University and how this is leading to positive difference in our community.

The two-day conference included pre-opening poster sessions, 3 minute thesis competition, PhD research talks and round table discussion with the speakers.

The poster session as a part of the conference was an opportunity for students to share their research with the community in the form of a displayed poster. Attendees had the opportunity to talk to students on a one-to-one basis and discover outstanding projects in fields such as Marine Science, Business, Nursing, Natural Sciences and Environment, Addictions and Gaming or History.

The OTWO team didn’t miss the opportunity to talk to the students and ask them about the main idea behind their posters.

Los días 14 y 15 de junio de 2023 se celebró en el Campus Europa Point de la Universidad de Gibraltar la "Conferencia sobre Investigación que beneficia a Gibraltar 2023". El objetivo de la conferencia era mostrar la investigación que se está llevando a cabo en la Universidad y cómo esto está conduciendo a una diferencia positiva en nuestra comunidad. La conferencia, de dos días de duración, incluyó sesiones de pósters previas a la inauguración, un concurso de tesis de 3 minutos, charlas de investigación doctoral y mesas redondas con los ponentes. La sesión de pósters fue una oportunidad para que los estudiantes compartieran sus investigaciones con la comunidad en forma de póster. Los asistentes tuvieron la oportunidad de hablar de tú a tú con los estudiantes y descubrir proyectos destacados en campos como las Ciencias del Mar, la Empresa, la Enfermería, las Ciencias Naturales y el Medio Ambiente, las Adicciones y el Juego o la Historia. El equipo de la OTWO no desaprovechó la oportunidad de hablar con los estudiantes y preguntarles por la idea principal de sus paneles.

“I am a student nurse at the University of Gibraltar, and I designed this poster to raise awareness about obesity, the health risks associated with it and explore prevention strategies. Obesity has become a global public health burden and has been on the rise for the past decades. In my work, I explore the prevalence and causes of obesity, which can be varied and sometimes overlooked, including biological factors, psychological and social influences. Adults living with obesity have a higher risk of developing health problems, including cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes, and mental health disorders.

Therefore, good prevention strategies implemented to the health services and authorities, including health education is essential to address obesity. My poster aims to raise this awareness in a visual way, expand knowledge on the subject and direct the viewer to the right place should they require further professional advice.”

«Soy estudiante de enfermería en la Universidad de Gibraltar y diseñé este cartel para concienciar sobre la obesidad, los riesgos para la salud asociados a ella y explorar estrategias de prevención. La obesidad se ha convertido en una carga para la salud pública mundial y ha ido en aumento en las últimas décadas. En mi trabajo exploro la prevalencia y las causas de la obesidad, que pueden ser variadas y a veces se pasan por alto, e incluyen factores biológicos e influencias psicológicas y sociales. Los adultos que padecen obesidad tienen más riesgo de desarrollar problemas de salud, como enfermedades

cardiovasculares o diabetes de tipo 2, y trastornos mentales.

Por lo tanto, la aplicación de buenas estrategias de prevención por parte de los servicios sanitarios y las autoridades, incluida la educación sanitaria, es esencial para hacer frente a la obesidad. “The aim of my project was to assess the impacts and pressures of Marine Recreational Fishing (MRF) on Europa Reef. To determine the marine recreational fishing effort (MRFE) a novel methodology was employed where in situ surveying was carried out by land-based visual surveys. Surveys involved measuring the fishing effort (number of fishing rods) and number of vessels effort to attain an idea of total marine recreational effort. At the same time, I compared the fishing area (Europa Reef) with a No-Take Zone (Seven Sisters) with BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater Video) deployments to compare the abundance and diversity between sites and conclude if MRF is having a negative impact on Gibraltar’s reef”.

«El objetivo de mi proyecto era evaluar los impactos y presiones de la pesca recreativa marina (MRF) en el arrecife Europa. Para determinar el esfuerzo de pesca recreativa marina (MRFE) se empleó una metodología novedosa en la que se realizaron encuestas visuales in situ desde tierra. Las encuestas consistieron en medir el esfuerzo pesquero (número de cañas de pescar) y el esfuerzo de las embarcacio-

nes para hacerse una idea del esfuerzo recreativo marino total. Al mismo tiempo, se comparó la zona de pesca (Arrecife Europa) con una zona de veda (Siete Hermanas) con despliegues de BRUV (vídeo submarino remoto con cebo) para comparar la abundancia y diversidad entre sitios y concluir si la MRF está teniendo un impacto negativo en el arrecife de Gibraltar».

Unravelling the cognition-addiction connectionDoes it matter?

Addiction can fundamentally affect an individual's performance. It may negatively affect personal, social, and academic functioning. Generally, it impairs human cognitive functioning, which is necessary for the successful completion of daily activities. Interestingly, even though several factors underlie addiction, the pleasure and gratification gained by taking a substance or engaging in a behaviour, is a major reinforcer that promotes its repetition and ultimately leads to addiction.

Specifically, our findings demonstrate reduced auditory-verbal working memory in individuals with gambling disorder. We also established that working memory capacity is associated with problem gambling, with a correlation between problem gambling severity and decreased working memory capacity. It is worth noting that disordered gaming and gambling are conditions with more severity and clinical significance than problem gaming and gambling. Similarly and specifically, gaming disorder was associated

with decreased working memory capacity than the healthy controls.

Our study contributes to the literature on the relationship between working memory capacity and addiction. This relationship is complex and encompasses multiple possibilities. One plausible scenario suggests that individuals with addiction may exhibit lower working memory capacity as a trait. However, an alternative perspective suggests that addiction itself may contribute to diminished working memory capacity. Moreover, a combined explanation is feasible, whereby individuals with addiction possess pre-existing altered working memory capacity that is further influenced by the reinforcing effects of addiction. The disentanglement of these potential mechanisms represents a crucial area of investigation in subsequent research endeavours. This research was conducted by the Centre of Excellence in Responsible Gaming - University of Gibraltar.

Desentrañar la conexión entre cognición y adicción: ¿importa?

La adicción puede afectar fundamentalmente al rendimiento de un individuo. Puede afectar negativamente al funcionamiento personal, social y académico. En general, deteriora el funcionamiento cognitivo humano, necesario para llevar a cabo con éxito las actividades cotidianas. Curiosamente, aunque son varios los factores que subyacen a la adicción, el placer y la gratificación que se obtienen al consumir una sustancia o realizar un comportamiento son los principales reforzadores que promueven su repetición y, en última instancia, conducen a la adicción. En concreto, nuestros hallazgos demuestran una memoria de trabajo auditivo-verbal reducida en individuos con trastorno de juego. También establecimos que la capacidad de la memoria de trabajo está asociada con el problema del juego, con una correlación entre la gravedad del problema del juego y la disminución de la capacidad de la memoria de trabajo. Cabe destacar que el trastorno del juego y la ludopatía son trastornos con mayor gravedad e importancia clínica que el problema del juego y la ludopatía. De forma similar y específica, el trastorno de juego se asoció con una menor capacidad de memoria de trabajo que los controles sanos.

Nuestro estudio contribuye a la literatura sobre la relación entre la capacidad de la memoria de trabajo y la adicción. Esta relación es compleja y abarca múltiples posibilidades. Una hipótesis plausible sugiere que los individuos con adicción pueden presentar una menor capacidad de memoria de trabajo como rasgo. Sin embargo, una perspectiva alternativa sugiere que la propia adicción puede contribuir a disminuir la capacidad de la memoria de trabajo. Además, es factible una explicación combinada, según la cual los individuos con adicción poseen una capacidad de memoria de trabajo alterada preexistente que se ve influida aún más por los efectos reforzadores de la adicción. El desentrañamiento de estos mecanismos potenciales representa un área crucial de investigación en posteriores trabajos de investigación.

The 3MT is meant to make students provide a clear rationale to convince a non-specialist audience of the value of their research, focus on their work and focus on its complexities.

Over the two-day event, students delivered presentations on a variety of topics ranging from Endangered Marine Species, Gaming Addictions, Gibraltar’s Military Fortifications, Dementia Care, Child Protection Practices, Education to Zoo archaeology.

Petros Dimitriou’s research focused on the conservation of Patella ferruginea, a critically endangered species with the largest population in mainland Europe located along Gibraltar’s coasts.

Dr Sonal Samtani presented the project on the impact of therapeutic intervention on a sample population of people living with dementia in Gibraltar.

La Dra. Sonal Samtani presentó el proyecto sobre el impacto de la intervención terapéutica en

Our recent focus has been on learning about and encouraging recycling. Although the Bank has always recycled, we wanted to improve on this and become more knowledgeable about the exact material which can and cannot be recycled, as well as educating employees on the time it takes for different elements to decompose.

En Trusted Novus Bank (TNB), nuestro grupo directivo de ESG ha estado trabajando duro para convertirse en el "banco verde preferido". Buscando predicar con el ejemplo, ESG es un área focal clave dentro de nuestra estrategia 2023 y más allá, donde creemos que un enfoque fuerte y ambicioso en ESG creará valores sostenibles a largo plazo, para nuestros clientes, empleados y comunidad local.

Recientemente nos hemos centrado en conocer y fomentar el reciclaje. Aunque el Banco siempre ha reciclado, queríamos mejorar en este aspecto y conocer mejor el material exacto que puede y no puede reciclarse, así como educar a los empleados sobre el tiempo que tardan los distintos elementos en descomponerse.

Last month the bank participated in The Nautilus Project’s Blue Week where we encouraged employees to reduce their single use of plastic. We also showed our support for World Ocean Day by coming to work wearing blue. Each employee gave to the cause and a sum of £352 was donated to The Nautilus Project.

This month Louis Stagnetto from Nautilus came into the bank and gave an informative presentation on Oceanic Climate Change. The presentation focused on the effects of climate change and scientific statistics on the evolving atmosphere surrounding us and its negative impact, particularly on our shores. In supporting Nautilus, the bank can develop knowledge in such areas so to aid us in creating an impactful ESG strategy.

Alongside our support for The Nautilus Project, the bank has also been attending different conferences to help us further understand the climate challenge. One such event was Aspire - a conference on Sustainability in the Bulit Environment. Here we learnt about the importance of the construction sector in creating CO2 emissions and the work being done to reduce this.

Behind the scenes the bank has also been busy introducing ESG themes such as calculating our carbon footprint, rolling out training on vulnerability, and implementing our annual customer satisfaction survey to understand our clients’ views. This is just the start of aligning our current efforts within the bank and matching them up within the ESG categories.

With climate change at the global forefront, and in a bid to create a greener Gibraltar, we at TNB aim to advance staff unity in all matters surrounding ESG by team building, training, and sharing information especially when connecting to the wider community! El mes pasado, el banco participó en la Semana Azul del Proyecto Nautilus, en la que animamos a los empleados a reducir el uso de plástico. También mostramos nuestro apoyo al Día Mundial de los Océanos yendo a trabajar vestidos de azul. Cada empleado contribuyó a la causa y se donaron 352 libras al Proyecto Nautilus.

Este mes, Louis Stagnetto, de Nautilus, vino al banco e hizo una presentación informativa sobre el cambio climático oceánico. La presentación se centró en los efectos del cambio climático y las estadísticas científicas sobre la evolución de la atmósfera que nos rodea y su impacto negativo, especialmente en nuestras costas. Al apoyar a Nautilus, el banco puede desarrollar sus conocimientos en estas áreas para ayudarnos a crear una estrategia ESG impactante.

Además de nuestro apoyo al Proyecto Nautilus, el banco también ha asistido a diferentes conferencias para ayudarnos a comprender mejor el reto climático. Uno de los eventos fue Aspire, donde aprendimos sobre la importancia del sector de la construcción en la creación de emisiones de CO2 y el trabajo que se está haciendo para reducirlas.

Entre bastidores, el banco también se ha ocupado de introducir temas de ESG, como el cálculo de nuestra huella de carbono, el despliegue de formación sobre vulnerabilidad y la realización de nuestra encuesta anual de satisfacción del cliente para conocer su opinión. Esto no es más que el principio de la armonización de nuestros esfuerzos actuales dentro del banco y su correspondencia con las categorías ESG.

Con el cambio climático en la vanguardia mundial, y en un intento de crear un Gibraltar más ecológico, en TNB nos proponemos fomentar la unidad del personal en todas las cuestiones relacionadas con los ASG mediante la creación de equipos, la formación y el intercambio de información, especialmente cuando nos conectamos con la comunidad en general. "We believe that sustainable building and an improved built environment is essential for a healthier, more resilient future Gibraltar".

Over 200 people, including industry professionals, researchers, experts, Government Ministers, MPs, NGOs and enthusiasts dedicated to advancing sustainable building practices gathered at the Sunborn Hotel in June for the first ASPIRE conference.

The Aspire Conference was organised by the Department of the Environment, Sustainability, Climate Change and Heritage and supported by several local industry sponsors, it was focused on key issues and trends related to sustainable buildings and construction in Gibraltar. It provided a space for companies and individuals involved or interested in the development of sustainable architecture and construction, as well as for an exchange of experience.

The event was sponsored by Casais and the Montagu Group as Gold Sponsors, NatWest International and GAMMA Arcitects as Silver and the Trusted Novus Bank, North Gorge Properties, Chestertons and NOSA as Bronze Sponsors. Media partners were GBC News, Gibraltar Chronicle and OTWO.

The one-day event included 2 sessions, 4 panels with a total of 17 panellists and 3 keynote speakers made up of local and international experts in this field. Key themes were explored: Designing for the Future: Net Zero and The Green Child Friendly City, Healthy Transport Healthy Lives, Education: a driver for positive action, Innovative sustainable building technologies and practices, Resilient buildings for a changing climate, Sustainable building certification and rating systems, Business cases for sustainable building.

The Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia opened the Aspire Conference in the presence of the Minister for the Environment Professor John Cortes and the Minister for Transport Paul Balban.

Dr. Garcia emphasised that the Government is committed to working with developers and contractors to ensure that they prioritise our local community in the design and execution of new projects. He warned that the private sector cannot simply put profit above quality of life. The Gibraltar Parliament unanimously declared a climate emergency in 2019, and Gibraltar has adopted ambitious, legally-binding targets under our Climate Change Act. These targets require Gibraltar to be Net Zero in terms of carbon emissions by 2045.

“We all need to start acting with the urgency that an emergency demands. Despite the recent challenge of COVID and the ongoing trials of Brexit, the climate emergency must remain at the top of our agenda as well. Clearly, Gibraltar’s Net Zero targets will not be met without significant changes to the way we currently do things, and we must look to the experts in the industry for those solutions”. – Dr. Garcia said.

Otro aspecto destacado de la conferencia fueron los talleres interactivos, en los que se trataron diversos temas relacionados con la construcción y el desarrollo sostenibles, y una Zona Comercial.

El Viceministro Principal, Dr. Joseph Garcia, inauguró la Conferencia Aspire en presencia del Ministro de Medio Ambiente, Profesor John Cortes, y del Ministro de Transportes, Paul Balban.

El Dr. García subrayó que el Gobierno se ha comprometido a trabajar con promotores y contratistas para garantizar que den prioridad a nuestra comunidad local en el diseño y la ejecución de nuevos proyectos. Advirtió que el sector privado no puede anteponer los beneficios a la calidad de vida. El Parlamento de Gibraltar declaró por unanimidad una emergencia climática en 2019, y Gibraltar ha adoptado objetivos ambiciosos y legalmente vinculantes en virtud de nuestra Ley de Cambio Climático. Estos objetivos requieren que Gibraltar sea Net Zero en términos de emisiones de carbono para 2045. «Todos tenemos que empezar a actuar con la urgencia que exige una emergencia. A pesar del reciente desafío del COVID y de las pruebas en curso del Brexit, la emergencia climática también debe seguir ocupando un lugar prioritario en nuestra agenda. Tony Juniper

The first keynote speaker of the conference - Tony Juniper, a world-renowned environmentalist and sustainability advocate highlighted the theme of global emergency that is climate change. He introduced the graphic with the temperature anomalies in individual countries where the audience saw how the changing atmospheric conditions is leading to anomalies which are far outside the base period in introduced graphic between 1950 and 1980. “Temperature conditions changing across the Planet, we need to act now with speed!” – Tony Juniper said. 1.5-degree limit, in 2017, the remaining carbon budget was set to last about 14 years. The faster we “spend” the budget, the more quickly we commit the world to breaking the 1.5-degree limit. Tony Juniper also introduced the circular economy principles for construction work.

El primer orador principal de la conferencia, Tony Juniper, ecologista de fama mundial y defensor de la sostenibilidad, destacó el tema de la emergencia mundial que es el cambio climático. Presentó un gráfico con las anomalías de temperatura en los distintos países, en el que el público pudo ver cómo el cambio de las condiciones atmosféricas está dando lugar a anomalías que están muy por encima del periodo base del gráfico presentado, entre 1950 y 1980. "Las condiciones de temperatura están cambiando en todo el Planeta, ¡tenemos que actuar ahora con rapidez!" - afirmó Tony Juniper. 1,5 grados, en 2017, el presupuesto de carbono restante se fijó para unos 14 años. Cuanto más rápido "gastemos" el presupuesto, más rápido comprometeremos al mundo a superar el límite de 1,5 grados. Tony Juniper también presentó los principios de la economía circular para las obras de construcción.

The 2nd keynote speaker, Catriona Brady, the Director of Strategy and Development at the World Green Building Council delivered a message about circular economy in the transition to the sustainable build environment.

“A circular economy in the build environment is the only solution. Why a circular economy? 55% of global emissions can be tackled through renewable energy and energy-efficiency measures, 45% - a circular economy is required to tackle the emissions associated with the things we make and consume.”

La segunda oradora principal, Catriona Brady, Directora de Estrategia y Desarrollo del World Green Building Council, transmitió un mensaje sobre la economía circular en la transición hacia un entorno de construcción sostenible.

“As we examine the business case for sustainable buildings, it’s important to understand the definition of value. For decades, our financial systems have externalised environmental and social impact, creating disparity between financial cost and true value of economic activity. We must embed these costs into investment decisions and enable market participants to balance long-term values alongside short-term financial return. Steps such as integrating the financial impact of climate change into decision making or improving transparency through increased climate-related disclosures are just the beginning. Systemic change cannot be delivered in isolation, we need to think differently.

The session included 3rd keynote speaker - Jason de Carteret, Head of Solarcentury Africa. His insight and strategic viewpoint is invaluable in helping deliver innovative technical designs that bring significant advancements in reliability and cost savings to the end clients.

The topic of 4th panel. Gemma Vasquez from Hassans, Julie Godefroy – CIBSE, Head of Net Zero Policy, Sam Stacey – Stacx, Mohammed Echcharqaouy from PwC delivered their presentations to the audience.

Sam Stacey, CEO Stacx International delivered his presentation on “Making an impact on Construction”, where he introduced a vision for the future in building construction:

“An industry that wastes no time, energy or materials in delivering beautiful and sustainable buildings. An industry where business relationships are long term and collaborative. Where value to clients and building users is the driver of all decisions. Where we harness the latest manufacturing techniques to assemble precision components in factory environments. Where new technology, such as sensor-based control systems, enables ease of building operation. Those who work in the industry to have safe jobs, in which they feel proud to be addressing the fundamental challenges of our time.”

Un sector en el que aprovechamos las últimas técnicas de fabricación para ensamblar componentes de precisión en entornos de fábrica. Donde las nuevas tecnologías, como los sistemas de control basados en sensores, facilitan el funcionamiento de los edificios. Que quienes trabajan en la industria tengan empleos seguros, en los que se sientan orgullosos de estar abordando los retos fundamentales de nuestro tiempo».

The Conference was closed by Baroness Lindsay Northover – (All Party Parliamentary Groups on the Environment, Critical Minerals and ESG) with a clear message on the importance of change to help this climate crisis we are in.

After hours, conference attendees enjoyed stunning evening views from the Sunborn Yacht Hotel and got a taste of drinks at VIP and Guest Drinks Reception. ASPIRE 2023 is over but the communication of new ideas to advance sustainable development will continue.

La Conferencia fue clausurada por la Baronesa Lindsay Northover - (All Party Parliamentary Groups on the Environment, Critical Minerals and ESG) con un claro mensaje sobre la importancia del cambio para ayudar a esta crisis climática en la que nos encontramos.

All societies now appear to be alive to the need for a clear and tangible commitment to fight climate change. To ensuring that we stop the unnecessary and wanton destruction of the world we live in.

It is widely accepted that the Construction Industry is in the top three of polluters in the world. In Gibraltar this figure is likely to be greater given our success in attracting investment. Whether Gibraltar or Spain however, the biggest challenge is the control of Energy waste within existing building portfolios which is by far the biggest consumer of energy.

To say that building and engineering practices have been lack in the past in the control of demand and use of energy is an understatement. The biggest challenge in this industry sector is therefore harnessing and controlling inefficiency within existing buildings.

In the excellent previous article, our colleagues at Coamba rightly put emphasis on the Universities in the area and highlight the need for transparent and ethical practices in this obviously important and influential sector.

At EVG in Gibraltar with our sister company EES in Spain, we have been working at developing tools for this precise problem. How to bring existing installations into control. How to provide consultancy services backed by engineering expertise that not only creates renewable energy where this is possible, or control and monitor the use of energy but provides real tangible advice on how to control systems and mitigate unnecessary energy wastage.

The economic consequences of the increased cost in energy is enormous. This reality is creating tremendous demand which in turn has resulted in a rush to market of products and services.

En EVG, en Gibraltar, con nuestra empresa hermana EES en España, hemos estado trabajando en el desarrollo de herramientas para este problema concreto. Cómo controlar las instalaciones existentes. Cómo proporcionar servicios de consultoría respaldados por conocimientos de ingeniería que no sólo creen energía renovable cuando sea posible, o controlen y supervisen el uso de la energía, sino que proporcionen asesoramiento real tangible sobre cómo controlar los sistemas y mitigar el derroche innecesario de energía.

Las consecuencias económicas del aumento del coste de la energía son enormes. Esta realidad está creando una tremenda demanda que, a su vez, ha dado lugar a una avalancha de productos y servicios en el mercado.

Good working practices on the coast and the importance of the ecosystem spread along the Andalusian coastline.

The coastline is undoubtedly one of the areas around the planet with more human activity since human beings formed their first social groups. We have been attracted to the proximity of the sea not only for romantic or religious reasons, but also for practical aspects. The provisioning of food, in the form of marine animals and vegetables, or transport by boat between distant places are undoubtedly the most obvious.

Today, tourism must be added to the above uses. The flow of people to coastal areas is increasing, following the increasingly varied offer of activities related to the sea and its environment.

El litoral es sin duda uno de los espacios en todo el planeta con más actividad humana desde que el ser humano formó sus primeros grupos sociales. Nos hemos visto atraídos por la cercanía del mar no solo por cuestiones románticas o religiosas, sino por aspectos prácticos. El aprovisionamiento de alimentos, en forma de animales y vegetales marinos o el transporte en barco entre lugares muy lejanos son sin duda los más obvios.

En la actualidad, a los usos anteriores se debe añadir el turismo. El flujo de personas a las zonas costeras va en aumento, siguiendo la cada vez más

In Cadiz we can organize a day at the beach or extend it with a boat trip to see cetaceans or seabirds, a diving course, a kite-surfing session, a horseback ride, or a route through the surrounding protected natural areas. And of course, this planning can be rounded off with a meal in any of the nearby restaurants or beach bars.

Considering this scenario, it is logical to think that the municipalities of coastal towns that have beaches are concerned about their maintenance in adequate conditions to meet the needs of that tourism that, ultimately, is generating wealth.

But beaches are natural habitats with complex dynamics. The tide and currents distribute the sands on the shore and this is distributed by the wind to create dunes, which become the reservoir to close the annual cycle and keep everything in place.

Until now, ignorance of these natural cycles has allowed actions that have generated serious problems. Let's take for example the installation of breakwaters or the construction of boardwalks.

But on a smaller scale there are other activities that also contribute to damage this balance. We refer to those included in the maintenance and cleaning of beaches. Traditionally, tourist beaches have been conceived as large plains of clean sand, with space only for towels, umbrellas and beach bars. Fortunately, these concepts are changing and there are already initiatives to change the forms of action; implementing new techniques, tools and machinery, all designed so that the beaches can continue to be a tourist attraction, but at the same time, they can be kept as close as possible to their natural state.

In this regard, we highlight the proposal of Diputación de Cádiz and the Colegio Oficial de Ambientólogos de Andalucía to create a training course for beach managers and workers of the different municipalities of the coast of Cadiz. This proposal provides the people involved, the basic knowledge about the ecology of the beaches and dunes and makes them reflect on what are the most appropriate methods for the maintenance work of each beach. This course, which has been given since 2020, has had its fourth edition between April 12 and May 4, 2023.

En Cádiz podemos organizar un día de playa o ampliar éste con una visita en barco para ver cetáceos o aves marinas, un curso de bautizo de buceo, una sesión de kite-surf, un paseo en caballo, o una ruta por los espacios naturales protegidos colindantes. Y como no, esta planificación se puede redondear con una comida en cualquiera de los restaurantes o chiringuitos cercanos.

Considerando este escenario, es lógico pensar que los ayuntamientos de localidades costeras que tienen playas se preocupen por su mantenimiento en condiciones adecuadas para satisfacer las necesidades de ese turismo que, en definitiva, les está generando riqueza.

Pero las playas son hábitats naturales con una compleja dinámica. La marea y las corrientes disponen las arenas en la orilla y esta es distribuida por el viento para crear dunas, que se convierten en el reservorio para poder cerrar el ciclo anual y mantener todo en su sitio.

Hasta ahora, el desconocimiento de estos ciclos naturales ha permitido actuaciones que han generado problemas serios. Pongamos por ejemplo la instalación de espigones o la construcción de paseos marítimos.

Pero a menor escala hay otras actividades que también contribuyen a dañar ese equilibrio. Nos referimos a las incluidas en el mantenimiento y limpieza de playas. Y es que, tradicionalmente las playas turísticas se han concebido como grandes planicies de arena limpia, con espacio solo para toallas, sombrillas y chiringuitos. Afortunadamente, estos conceptos están cambiando y existen ya iniciativas para cambiar las formas de actuación; implementando nuevas técnicas, herramientas y maquinaria, todo ello, pensado para que las playas puedan seguir siendo un reclamo turístico, pero al mismo tiempo, se puedan mantener lo más cerca posible de su estado natural.

En este sentido, destacamos la propuesta de Diputación de Cádiz y el Colegio Oficial de Ambientólogos de Andalucía de creación de un curso de formación para gestores y trabajadores de playas de los diferentes ayuntamientos de la costa gaditana. En esta propuesta se proporciona a las personas implicadas,

Mainly, it has been beach cleaning staff, which, as has happened in previous years, have received with great interest the content received, pleasantly surprised to discover aspects of their beaches that were not yet known.

This training consisted of a first online phase, in which the participants worked with written material, where they were provided with basic contents followed by reflection exercises. After finishing it, the experience was completed with a practical day, which this year took place on the Levante beach in Puerto de Santa María. The different morphologies of the beach throughout the year, the importance of the dune flora in the formation of these accumulations of sand and the fragility of this type of habitat or the presence of nesting birds in the sands and with which special measures must be taken to avoid the destruction of the eggs.

The interest of this type of training, after several years working in the coastal towns of Cadiz, has been positively valued. This year the Diputación de Granada has joined the program and COAMBA has extended it to the municipalities of the coast of Granada, organizing a new course from May 8 to 31.

The structure of the training proposal has been the same as in Cadiz. In this case the most notable aspect has been the need to adapt the concepts applicable to the beaches and dunes of Cadiz to those of Granada, in many cases small and framed by mountain ranges that end in the sea, with a substrate of very coarse sand or gravel. However, the situation in relation to maintenance is very similar, so the contents worked on have been equally welcomed by the participants.

The practical sessions of this training in Granada were held at the Marina del Este beach in Almuñecar, and La Charca beach in Salobreña, both with very different morphology and uses.

This year, 24 people from the municipalities of Almuñecar, Salobreña, Motril, Polopos-La Mamola, Gualchos Rubite, Lujar and Granada participated in this training in Granada.

Este curso, que se viene impartiendo desde 2020, ha tenido su cuarta edición entre el 12 de abril y el 4 de mayo de 2023.

En la edición de este año han participado 38 personas de los Ayuntamientos de El Puerto de Santa María, Tarifa, Rota, San Roque, Puerto Real, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Chipiona y hasta de la provincia de Huelva (Isla Cristina). Principalmente, ha sido personal laboral de limpieza de playa, que, como ha ocurrido en años anteriores, han recibido con gran interés los contenidos recibidos, sorprendidos gratamente por descubrir aspectos de sus playas que aún no conocían.

Esta formación ha consistido en una primera fase online, en la que las personas participantes han trabajado con un material escrito, donde se les proporcionó contenidos básicos seguidos de ejercicios de reflexión. Tras acabarla, se completó la experiencia con una jornada práctica, que este año se ha realizado en la playa de Levante en el Puerto de Santa María. En ella se conocieron las distintas morfologías de la playa a lo largo del año, la importancia de la flora dunar en la formación de estos acúmulos de arena y la fragilidad de este tipo de hábitat o la presencia de aves nidificantes en las arenas y con las que se deben adoptar medidas especiales para evitar la destrucción de los huevos.

El interés de este tipo de formación, después de varios años trabajando en las localidades costeras de Cádiz, se ha valorado positivamente. Este año se ha incorporado la Diputación de Granada y desde el COAMBA se ha ampliado a los ayuntamientos del litoral de Granada, organizando un nuevo curso, durante los días 8 a 31 de mayo.

La estructura de la propuesta formativa ha sido la misma que en Cádiz. En este caso lo más notable ha sido la necesidad de adaptar los conceptos aplicables de las playas y dunas de Cádiz a las de Granada, en muchos casos pequeñas y enmarcadas por serranías que acaban en el mar, con un sustrato de arenas muy gruesas o gravas. Sin embargo, la situación en relación con el mantenimiento es muy similar, por lo que los contenidos trabajados han sido igualmente bienvenidos por las personas participantes.

Las jornadas prácticas de esta formación en Granada se llevaron a cabo en la playa Marina del Este de Almuñecar, y la playa de La Charca en Salobreña, ambas de morfología y usos muy distintos entre sí. En esta formación en Granada han participado este año 24 personas de los Ayuntamientos de Almuñécar, Salobreña, Motril, Polopos-La Mamola, Gualchos Rubite, Lujar y Granada.

This was very easily done with most of them made up of 96% water with colouring, preservative, and very little cleaning agent. Andrea then went further and asked if this new product could be packaged free of any plastics and in re-useable containers. This proved to be a little more difficult. The development of the plastic free products took almost two years, but when they were ready for testing and production, they exceeded all expectations.

Production began with just four products which were very well accepted by our customers. Now there are more than twenty products with a range of perfumes offered.

Everything about our business ideologies and mission is on a sustainable base. Esto era muy fácil, ya que la mayoría de ellos estaban compuestos por un 96% de agua con colorantes, conservantes y muy poco producto de limpieza. Andrea fue más allá y preguntó si este nuevo producto podría envasarse sin plásticos y en recipientes reutilizables. Esto resultó un poco más difícil. El desarrollo de los productos sin plástico llevó casi dos años, pero cuando estuvieron listos para las pruebas y la producción, superaron todas las expectativas.

La producción comenzó con sólo cuatro productos que fueron muy bien aceptados por nuestros clientes. Ahora se ofrecen más de veinte productos con una amplia gama de perfumes.

Toda nuestra ideología y misión empresarial se basa en la sostenibilidad. Nuestra fábrica tiene una huella de carbono que consideramos única, ya que no producimos ningún residuo químico, algo de lo que estamos muy orgullosos.

After restful sleep and an early breakfast, we took the morning train to Corniglia, the least touristic and the only Cinque Terre village that does not lie directly on the waterfront. A curious feature of the Italian railways are the double-decker trains. Featuring two levels of seating compartments within a single train carriage, passengers have the option to choose between the lower and upper decks, both offering comfortable seating arrangements. Without hesitation we took seats on the upper deck for the five-minute train ride to Corniglia.

From the station at ground level, four hundred narrow stone steps rise to the top of a high cliff overlooking the sea. The testing climb took us up through narrow winding streets full of colourful house facades and picturesque shop fronts. Flowers were everywhere. Vibrant bougainvillea, clusters of geraniums in shades of red, pink, white, and salmon. Sweetly fragrant Jasmine, and red poppies with striking petals. These were complimented with clumps of Oleander, sporting pink, white, and red flowers. Cascading blossoms of purple and white Wisteria, charming daisies, and fragrant Lavender, added to the diverse symphony of flowers. This striking combination of blooms filled the landscape with colour and fragrance. Spring, aptly manifested by the vibrance of the surrounding flora, was definitely in the air.

This tiny sleepy town is full of character and surprising legend. According to fanciful local myth, Roman farmers originally settled the area, the most prominent of which named the village Cornelia after his mother. However, no reliable historical sources are able to substantiate this story. What the historical record can most definitely confirm is the widely exported wine the ancient residents of Corniglia produced. Amphorae of Roman wines, stamped with the town name, exemplar mementos of a lost past, have recently been dug up by archaeologists excavating Pompei.

We devoted the final day of our stay in Cinque Terre to the two remaining villages— Manarola and Riomaggiore. By train the ride from Monterosso to Manarola takes about ten to fifteen minutes, covering a distance of about six kilometres. Just like the other towns we visited, Manarola is known for its

Después de un sueño reparador y un desayuno temprano, tomamos el tren de la mañana hacia Corniglia, el pueblo menos turístico y el único de Cinque Terre que no está situado directamente frente al mar. Una característica curiosa de los ferrocarriles italianos son los trenes de dos pisos. Con dos niveles de asientos dentro de un mismo vagón, los pasajeros pueden elegir entre la cubierta inferior y la superior, ambas con cómodos asientos. Sin dudarlo, tomamos asiento en el piso superior para el trayecto de cinco minutos a Corniglia.

Desde la estación a nivel del suelo, cuatrocientos estrechos escalones de piedra ascienden hasta la cima de un alto acantilado con vistas al mar. La dura subida nos llevó por estrechas y sinuosas calles llenas de coloridas fachadas de casas y pintorescos escaparates. Había flores por todas partes. Vibrantes buganvillas, racimos de geranios en tonos rojos, rosas, blancos y salmón. Jazmines de dulce fragancia y amapolas rojas de llamativos pétalos. Se complementaban con macizos de adelfas de flores rosas, blancas y rojas. Flores en cascada de glicinias moradas y blancas, encantadoras margaritas y fragantes lavandas se sumaban a la variada sinfonía de flores. Esta sorprendente combinación de flores llenó el paisaje de color y fragancia. Se respiraba la primavera, tal y como reflejaba la efervescencia de la flora circundante.

Este pequño y adormicido pueblo está lleno de carácter y sorprendentes leyendas. Según una fantasiosa leyenda local, los campesinos romanos se asentaron en la zona, y el más destacado de ellos bautizó el pueblo con el nombre de Cornelia en honor a su madre. Sin embargo, ninguna fuente histórica fiable puede corroborar esta historia. Lo que sí puede confirmar el registro histórico es que los antiguos habitantes de Corniglia exportaban vino. Los arqueólogos que excavan en Pompeya han desenterrado recientemente ánforas de vinos romanos con el nombre de la ciudad, recuerdos ejemplares de un pasado perdido.

Dedicamos el último día de nuestra estancia en Cinque Terre a los dos pueblos restantes: Manarola y Riomaggiore. En tren, el trayecto de Monterosso a Manarola dura entre diez y quince minutos, cubriendo una distancia de unos seis kilómetros. Al igual

colourful houses that cling onto the steep cliffs and ridges overlooking the sea.

The town is exceedingly small, made up of tightly constricted streets and passages. Steep flights of twisting stone steps rise unevenly through hillside terraces amid undulating vineyards and hardy lemon tree orchards.

Via Discovolo, Manarola’s principal street, runs from the centre of town to the clear blue waters of a small compact harbour crammed with traditional Genoese fishing boats— gozzi or gozzi da pesca in Italian. Typically painted in bright colours, the gozzi have a distinctive curved shape which aids navigation through choppy waters. These vintage crafts are considered an important part of Italy's maritime heritage. The gozzi brought memories of fishing boats in Catalan Bay Gibraltar, my home town. The Gibraltarian boats bear a strong resemblance to the traditional Genoese construction and paint design, very much like the boats I observed at Manarola harbour.

Rocky cliffs surround the harbour, providing excellent vantage points from where the sublime sunsets over the Ligurian sea may be enjoyed. The rugged outcrops of sheer sandstone rock create a natural frame which encloses the seascape and sets a central focal point within the space occupied by the setting sun. The undisputed natural aesthetics of the area inspired important artists like Claude Monet, the famous French impressionist painter who visited the area in 1884 and painted attractive seascapes. Richard Westall (1765-1836) English painter, illustrator, and poet was also captivated when he visited the Cinque Terre in the early 1800s. He created a pair of watercolour seascapes, "View of Manarola from the Sea" and "View of the Cinque Terre from the Sea".

Well known for its excellent seafood, which is caught daily, Manarola’s regional specialties include fresh Mediterranean sardines, seafood pasta, and traditional homemade pesto— the best in Italy. Approaching lunchtime, we made our way to Ristorante La Regina di Manarola on via Ettore Cozzani, located in the upper part of the village, in a dominant position with respect to the harbour and marina. Famous for its modern approach to traditional Ligurian cuisine, La Regina offers an innovative food and wine journey where the classic regional cuisine is redis-

que los otros pueblos que visitamos, Manarola es conocido por sus coloridas casas que se aferran a los escarpados acantilados y crestas que dan al mar. El pueblo es muy pequeño, formado por calles y pasajes estrechos. Empinadas escaleras de piedra se elevan desigualmente por las terrazas de las laderas, entre ondulantes viñedos y huertos de limoneros.

Via Discovolo, la calle principal de Manarola, discurre desde el centro del pueblo hasta las cristalinas aguas azules de un pequeño y compacto puerto repleto de tradicionales embarcaciones de pesca genovesas, los gozzi o gozzi da pesca en italiano. Los gozzi, típicamente pintados de vivos colores, tienen una característica forma curva que facilita la navegación en aguas agitadas. Estas embarcaciones de época se consideran parte importante del patrimonio marítimo italiano. Los gozzi me trajeron recuerdos de los barcos pesqueros de la playa de la Caleta en Gibraltar, mi ciudad natal. Las embarcaciones gibraltareñas guardan un gran parecido con el diseño tradicional genovés de construcción y pintura, muy parecido a los barcos que observé en el puerto de Manarola.

Los acantilados rocosos que rodean el puerto ofrecen excelentes miradores donde se puede disfrutar de las sublimes puestas de sol sobre el mar de Liguria. Los escarpados afloramientos de roca arenisca escarpada crean un marco natural que encierra el paisaje marino y establece un punto focal central dentro del espacio ocupado por el sol poniente. La indiscutible estética natural de la zona inspiró a importantes artistas como Claude Monet, el famoso pintor impresionista francés que visitó la zona en 1884 y pintó atractivos paisajes marinos. Richard Westall (1765-1836) pintor, ilustrador y poeta inglés también quedó cautivado cuando visitó las Cinque Terre a principios del siglo XIX. Creó un par de marinas en acuarela, «Vista de Manarola desde el mar» y «Vista de las Cinque Terre desde el mar».

Conocido por su excelente marisco, que se pesca a diario, las especialidades regionales de Manarola incluyen sardinas mediterráneas frescas, pasta de marisco y pesto casero tradicional, el mejor de Italia. Al acercarse la hora de comer, nos dirigimos al Ristorante La Regina di Manarola, en via Ettore Cozzani, situado en la parte alta del pueblo, en una posición

covered in its traditional recipes. Choosing from the inviting selection of culinary options on offer was proving tricky to say the least. Whilst leafing through the tempting menu, a rich mouth-watering aroma of fresh seafood sizzling over charcoal permeated the terrace. The unique smell of fresh produce from the sea, cooked over red hot coals always brings summer to my mind. A nostalgia of the long lazy evenings I spend with my family at the beach in Gibraltar every summer, cooking and eating fresh fish from our barbecue. The idea of partaking of tasty food and fine wine on the beach, in good company, as the fierce Mediterranean sun sets, is what I call the good life. Anthony Bourdain, the late great travelling cook, food journalist, author, and philosopher from New York said:

“Anything you eat with sand between your feet, tastes better!”

I agree wholeheartedly!

There remained the pressing question of what to order from the extensive combination of dishes on offer. I eventually settled for the house speciality, La Leggenda del Polpo croccante, crispy octopus tentacles grilled over charcoal, served on potato cream and confit of cherry tomatoes. For dessert I ordered Il Tiramisù di nonna Rosetta, Grandma Rosetta’s Tiramisù which I shared with my wife. A classic Italian dessert, Tiramisù is rich, creamy, and indulgent. It is typically made up of overlaid ladyfinger biscuits dipped in espresso coffee, and layered with a rich mixture of mascarpone cheese, eggs, sugar, and sometimes liquor such as Marsala wine or rum. The sheer decadence of this dessert is perfect for special occasions, or any other time when one is wishes to indulge in this after-dinner delight.

We left the restaurant satisfied and well-fed, albeit with a notable hit sustained on the wallet. A multifarious mix of steeply rising steps, including flights of irregular narrow stone staircases, large flat cobbled paths, and a curious balustraded criss-crossing section, led us to one of the town’s highlights, the Manarola—Riomaggiore—Corniglia hiking trail, known as the Via dell'Amore or Lover's Walk. The trail, which is about one kilometre long, winds along dry-stone terraces on the cliffside, of-

Una nostalgia de las largas y perezosas tardes que paso con mi familia en la playa de Gibraltar todos los veranos, cocinando y comiendo pescado fresco de nuestra barbacoa. La idea de degustar sabrosos platos y buen vino en la playa, en buena compañía, mientras se pone el feroz sol mediterráneo, es lo que yo llamo la buena vida.

Anthony Bourdain, el difunto gran cocinero viajero, periodista gastronómico, escritor y filósofo neoyorquino, dijo:

«¡Cualquier cosa que comas con arena entre los pies, sabe mejor!».

Estoy totalmente de acuerdo.

Me quedaba la duda de qué pedir entre la amplia variedad de platos que ofrecían. Al final me decidí por la especialidad de la casa, La Leggenda del Polpo croccante, crujientes tentáculos de pulpo asados al carbón, servidos sobre crema de patata y tomates cherry confitados. De postre pedí Il Tiramisù di nonna Rosetta, el Tiramisù de la abuela Rosetta, que compartí con mi mujer. El Tiramisù es un postre italiano clásico, rico, cremoso y goloso. Suele estar hecho de galletas ladyfinger bañadas en café espresso y recubiertas de una rica mezcla de queso mascarpone, huevos, azúcar y, a veces, licor, como vino Marsala o ron. La decadencia de este postre es perfecta para ocasiones especiales, o para cualquier otro momento en el que uno desee darse un capricho después de cenar.

fering stunning views of the sea and the surrounding landscape. A leisurely walk, via dell'Amore to Riomaggiore takes around half an hour to complete. However, we took double the time, well over an hour to finish the trail because the photogenic views along the walk compelled me to make continuous camera stops. The immaculate blue of the sky contrasted sharply with countless clusters of white foamy sea waves commonly known as little white horses or whitecaps. The contrasting sky and sea in the foreground, with the monumental backdrop of rugged cliffs, created extraordinary photo opportunities. A photographer’s paradise! My only regret was that I did not bring my tripod along. No doubt, use of a tripod would have most certainly improved the quality of the pictures I took. However, if that had been the case, completing the walk would have taken us much longer.

The name of the trail derives from a local legend with a tragic end —typical Italian romanticism. A youth from Riomaggiore falls in love with a pretty young maiden from Manarola. However, both families strongly opposed their relationship. Not fearing the inevitable consequences, the couple continued to meet secretly on a small inaccessible strip of land between the two villages. Every other day, the lovers would lower themselves on ropes down the dangerous cliffs to embrace on a secluded rocky overhang that became known as Lover's Rock.

Eventually, the couple’s parents discover the deception of the infatuated duo and forcibly forbade them from ever seeing each other again. Heartbroken, albeit defiant, the lovers agree a suicide pact. In an act of disconsolate despair, they end their lives together by jumping off the cliffs into the sea holding hands. Henceforth, the trail that connects the two villages became known as the Via dell'Amore in honour of their tragic love story.

Having finally completed Via dell'Amore, we arrived at Riomaggiore, the most substantial town of the Cinque Terre group, just after four in the afternoon. Founded by a group of Greek refugees who settled in the area after fleeing from Constantinople, now Istanbul, capital of Turkey, historic Riomaggiore dates back to the 13th century. Built at the mouth of a stream that flows into the sea, the village’s original name was Rivo Major, major stream in English.

Un joven de Riomaggiore se enamora de una bella doncella de Manarola. Sin embargo, ambas familias se oponían firmemente a su relación. Sin temer las inevitables consecuencias, la pareja siguió viéndose en secreto en una pequeña franja de tierra inaccesible entre los dos pueblos. Cada dos días, los amantes bajaban con cuerdas por los peligrosos acantilados para abrazarse en un aislado saliente rocoso que pasó a conocerse como la Roca de los Enamorados. Laid-back and with significantly less tourists than its neighbours, Riomaggiore while traffic-free, exudes urban rather than village characteristics. Surrounding the harbour, an interesting collection of pastel homes huddle in close proximity. The colourful house fronts, a characteristic feature of Italian fishing villages is not a modern custom. Originally for practical rather than aesthetic reasons, the tradition of painting house facades in bright colours has been practiced for centuries. The aim was to help anglers at sea locate their homes easily. Over time, the practice became a cultural and artistic tradition, today a common feature of Italian coastal towns and villages.

Travelling north from La Spezia, Riomaggiore with its distinctive Mediterranean atmosphere rich in maritime heritage, is the first stop of the Cinque Terre National Park. Known for its historic character and wine production, its narrow streets are packed with shops, cafes, and restaurants that serve delicious seafood and local specialties. We stopped for coffee and pastry at Bar Centrale located on the Via Colombo, Riomaggiore’s picturesque main street. It had been a long day and fatigue was making its presence felt, so we sat unengaged soaking up the atmosphere.

Situated directly opposite the coffeeshop, an unusual handicraft retailer, noticeably atypical, caught my attention. Stepping into the establishment, I was struck by the fact that the majority of the items on display were woodcrafts handmade by the owners. There were fish, whales, dolphins, and sea urchins, together with all manner of reliefs, busts, furniture, lamps and even eating and cooking utensils all made of wood. The place resembled an overflowed art gallery, full of exquisite exhibits. A warm, earthy aroma of freshly cut wood filled the shop, invoking a comforting sense of connection with the natural world. We purchased a curious collection of hand painted sardines attached to a rope. A gift for our precious little grandson who adores fish. Riomaggiore is a popular destination for travellers seeking the authentic Italian experience. However, visitors chasing the true taste of Italy should avoid the busy summer months when large numbers of tourists descend on the village. During low season however, Riomaggiore is a destination that capti-

Fundada por un grupo de refugiados griegos que se instalaron en la zona tras huir de Constantinopla, actual Estambul, capital de Turquía, la histórica Riomaggiore data del siglo XIII. Construido en la desembocadura de un arroyo que desemboca en el mar, el nombre original del pueblo era Rivo Major, arroyo mayor en español.

Tranquilo y con muchos menos turistas que sus vecinos, Riomaggiore, aunque sin tráfico, destila características más urbanas que pueblerinas. Alrededor del puerto se apiña una interesante colección de casas de colores pastel. Las coloridas fachadas de las casas, un rasgo característico de los pueblos pesqueros italianos, no son una costumbre moderna. Originalmente por razones más prácticas que estéticas, la tradición de pintar las fachadas de las casas con colores vivos se ha practicado durante siglos. El objetivo era ayudar a los pescadores en el mar a localizar fácilmente sus casas. Con el tiempo, la práctica se convirtió en una tradición cultural y artística, hoy un rasgo común de las ciudades y pueblos costeros italianos.

Viajando hacia el norte desde La Spezia, Riomaggiore, con su característico ambiente mediterráneo rico en patrimonio marítimo, es la primera parada del Parque Nacional de Cinque Terre. Conocido por su carácter histórico y su producción vinícola, sus estrechas calles están repletas de tiendas, cafés y restaurantes que sirven deliciosos mariscos y especialidades locales. Paramos a tomar un café y un pastel en el Bar Centrale, situado en la Via Colombo, la pintoresca calle principal de Riomaggiore. Había sido un día largo y el cansancio se hacía notar, así que nos sentamos a disfrutar del ambiente.

Justo enfrente de la cafetería, me llamó la atención una tienda de artesanía muy atípica. Al entrar en el establecimiento, me llamó la atención que la mayoría de los artículos expuestos eran artesanías de madera hechas a mano por los propietarios. Había peces, ballenas, delfines y erizos de mar, junto con todo tipo de relieves, bustos, muebles, lámparas e incluso utensilios para comer y cocinar, todo hecho de madera. El lugar parecía una galería de arte desbordada, llena de exquisitas piezas expuestas. Un cálido y terroso aroma a madera recién cortada lle-

Riomaggiore, the last village on our three-day itinerary, put an end to our wonderful visit to the enchanting Cinque Terre National Park. I can honestly say that the area lives up to its famous reputation.

Given the choice, without doubt, I would settle for the majestic aesthetics of the rugged cliffs that overlook the mighty Ligurian Sea.

It was getting late, so we caught the evening train back to Monterosso al Mare. In the morning we would travel to Sestri Levante, a town and commune in the area of the Metropolitan City of Genoa, our next destination.

Of stones, stars and suns

De piedras, estrellas y soles

For several days, when darkness began to fill the landscape with shadows, she was the first to finish her austere ration of food in order to run out of the hut to look at the horizon. She kept her eyes fixed on the same place where every day, between two distant peaks, the sun would emerge, the one that gave life and accompanied her in death. Just at that point it had to appear, there was little left, according to "the elders", to be able to see it.

At the moment of its appearance, which occurred at the beginning of April, the whole village was in an uproar. The expected was one of the brightest stars in the sky, today we know her as Vega, for the girl it meant feeling the cool night breeze on her burnt skin, baths in the river, laughter with her friends and above all abundant food. With great dexterity she climbed to the highest part of the sacred places where the spirits of her ancestors dwelled. From there he could see the great lagoon in the distance and how thousands of birds of all sizes and colors returned to it, in endless flocks, to rebuild their nests destroyed by the rains and the strong easterly winds of last winter. The air was filled with different trills that she knew how to differentiate perfectly, and the reptiles returned to occupy the best places on the rock to warm her body, still numb from the cold. In the coming months she would go through large areas of the forest filling her basket with bunches of Yarrow, Horsetail, Chamomile, Viborera flowers, among others, so that her grandmother, transmitter of knowledge, would prepare her medicinal ointments that in the not-too-distant future, she would prepare herself.

Women, men and children alike prepared their utensils to begin the work that this new cycle and the benevolent gods would allow them to do, there was no time to lose. Some prepared the hoes, sickles and axes, others the harpoons and hooks that during the long winter they had made by the light of the fire. But first of all, it was necessary to thank the ancestors and Mother Nature for making it possible that once again the cycle of life was fulfilled and that Vega, in her eternal return, accompanied by her sisters Altair and Deneb, formed that triangle of fertility and life in the middle of the sacred river represented by the Milky Way.

Desde hacía varios días, cuando la oscuridad comenzaba a llenar de sombras el paisaje, ella era la primera en terminar su austera ración de alimentos para poder salir corriendo del chozo a mirar el horizonte. Se quedaba con sus ojos fijos hacia el mismo lugar por donde cada día surgía entre dos picos lejanos el que daba la vida y acompañaba en la muerte, el sol. Justo en ese punto tenía que aparecer, ya quedaba poco, según «los mayores», para poder verla. En el momento de su aparición, que ocurría a principios de abril, todo el poblado se alborotaba. La esperada era una de las estrellas más brillantes del cielo, hoy la conocemos como Vega, para la niña significaba sentir en su piel quemada la fresca brisa nocturna, baños en el río, risas con sus amigos y sobre todo alimento en abundancia. Con gran destreza trepaba hasta la parte más alta de los lugares sagrados donde moraban los espíritus de sus antepasados. Desde allí podía divisar a la lejanía la gran laguna y cómo regresaban a ella, en interminables bandadas, miles de aves de todos los tamaños y colores, para rehacer sus nidos deshechos por las lluvias y los fuertes vientos de levante del invierno pasado. El aire se llenaba de diversos trinos que ella sabía diferenciar a la perfección, y los reptiles volvían a ocupar los mejores lugares de la roca para calentar su cuerpo entumecido aún por el frío.

En los próximos meses recorrería grandes extensiones del bosque llenando su cesta de ramilletes de Aquilea, Cola de caballo, Camomila, flores de Viborera, entre otras, para que su abuela, transmisora de saberes, preparara sus ungüentos medicinales que en un futuro, no muy lejano, prepararía ella. Mujeres, hombres y niños por igual disponían sus utensilios para iniciar las labores que este nuevo ciclo y los dioses benévolos les permitieran realizar, no había tiempo que perder. Algunos preparaban las azadas, hoces y hachas, otros los arpones y anzuelos que durante el largo invierno habían fabricado junto a la luz del fuego. Pero antes que nada era menester agradecer a los ancestros y a la madre naturaleza que hicieran posible que una vez más el ciclo de la vida se cumpliese y que Vega, en su eterno retorno, acompañada por sus hermanas Altair y Deneb, formaran ese triángulo portador de fertilidad y de vida en medio del río sagrado representado por la Vía Láctea.

ing towards the sky, today, five thousand years later, I find myself doing the same thing, my eyes fixed towards the East, waiting for the miracle to happen and for that triangle, formed by luminous stars, to confirm once again that the three circles engraved next to a dolmen give me back that little girl.

In the year 2020, in one of the slopes of the Sierra de la Plata, in the province of Cadiz, carrying out a fieldwork we discovered some prehistoric rock engravings, specifically three circles. The studies carried out led us to hypothesize that they possibly represented the asterism (pseudoconstellation) known as "summer triangle", and that most probably had the function of a seasonal marker in which it was possible, or not, to carry out certain activities, whether related to hunting, agriculture, fishing, shellfish gathering, etc.

This is not the first seasonal marker found in this mountain range. In this magical enclave located between two seas, there is an abundance of cave paintings that refer us to the sky, to the vital importance it had for the inhabitants of these latitudes and the vast astronomical knowledge they had about the celestial.

The village was built respecting a pattern, not only strategic, but divine. The sacralized caves, the alignments with certain stars that the funerary monuments had, etc. reflected their cosmovision, in which, undoubtedly, the sky was their great inspiration.

When I ask myself what I am looking for in these investigations, while I walk imagining that I am following in her footsteps, picking up the same stones that touched her hands, that the girl touched, turning them into tools, the answer is always the same: I am looking to question the story that has been spread so far. I seek evidence of the existence of a lost paradise, where a type of human being dwelt with a wisdom that consisted in inhabiting the earth, totally inserted in its natural order. A paradise where it was believed that the being was only a pre-existent spirit covered by a body and alien to materialistic philosophies.

I am still waiting for the child.

Desde el sitio donde imagino a la pequeña mirando hacia el cielo, hoy, cinco mil años después, me encuentro yo haciendo lo mismo, la vista fija hacia el Este esperando que ocurra el milagro de que ese triángulo, formado por estrellas luminosas, confirme una vez más que los tres círculos grabados junto a un dolmen me devuelven a esa niña.

En el año 2020, en una de las laderas de la Sierra de la Plata, en la Provincia de Cádiz, realizando un trabajo de campo descubrimos unos grabados rupestres prehistóricos, en concreto tres círculos. Los estudios efectuados nos llevaron a plantear la hipótesis de que posiblemente representaran el asterismo (pseudoconstelación) conocido como “triángulo de verano”, y que muy probablemente tenía la función de un marcador de temporadas en las cuales se podía, o no, realizar ciertas actividades, ya sea relacionadas con la caza, la agricultura, la pesca, el marisqueo, etc.

No es el primer marcador estacional que encontramos en esta sierra. En este enclave mágico situado entre dos mares abundan las pinturas rupestres que nos remiten al cielo, a la importancia vital que tenía para los pobladores de estas latitudes y los vastos conocimientos astronómicos que poseían sobre el celeste.

El poblado se construía respetando un patrón, no sólo estratégico, sino divino. Las cuevas sacralizadas, las alineaciones con ciertas estrellas que tenían los monumentos funerarios, etc. reflejaban su cosmovisión, en la cual, sin duda alguna, el cielo era su gran inspiración.

Cuando me pregunto qué busco en estas investigaciones, mientras camino imaginando que sigo sus huellas, cogiendo las mismas piedras que tocaron sus manos, que tocó la niña convirtiéndolas en herramientas, la respuesta es siempre la misma: busco cuestionar el relato hasta ahora difundido. Busco las pruebas de la existencia de un paraíso perdido, donde moraba un tipo de ser humano con una sabiduría que consistía en habitar la tierra, totalmente inserto en su orden natural. Un paraíso en donde se creía que el ser era tan sólo un espíritu pre-existente cubierto por un cuerpo y ajeno a las filosofías materialistas.

Aún espero a la niña.

Scheherazade, the daughter of the vizier of the kingdom, had married King Shahriar exactly 271 days ago. But she was still alive. Everything was different with her. The other wives, except for the first one, the one who cheated on him with a palace slave, only survived one day after the wedding. After the betrothal, for fear of a new infidelity, they were unfailingly beheaded before dawn broke. But Scheherazade had a plan. Every night, she would start an interesting story that would awaken the monarch's attention and that she would interrupt at dawn to continue it the following night. Thus the cruel king, blinded by curiosity, would forget again and again to end the life of his young lady, whose storytelling skills became legendary. In fact, many of the resources used to maintain the interest of the reader or listener are recognized and used in the present time, both in written and oral literature, whose most appropriate exponent with the theme that brings us to mention are the storytellers. The collection of Scheherazade's stories gave rise to one of the bestknown works of universal literature: The Thousand and One Nights.

But on that day, 271, the queen told a different tale. The usual tales were of love, adventure, travel, fantasy..., but none of them spoke of any known place. In the compilations of Arab, Persian or Hindu tales that make up the body of the book of storybooks, there is never any mention of a real city, except Toledo -which is placed in the country of Al Andalus-, nor of a specific legendary event, such as the crossing of the Strait of Gibraltar by Muslim troops to enter the Iberian Peninsula.

The story began, more or less like this:

I have learned, O happy king, that there was a city called Toledo, capital of the kingdom of the Goths. It had a castle that was always locked. Every time a Christian king died and was succeeded by another, they put a good lock on the door, so that there came to be twenty-four locks on the door, belonging to as many kings. At this time a man came to power who did not belong to the royal house, and wanted to open the locks to see what was in that fortress.

The great men of the kingdom tried to prevent

Cada noche, iniciaría una historia interesante que despertaría la atención del monarca y que interrumpiría al amanecer para continuarla la noche siguiente. Así el cruel rey, cegado por la curiosidad, se olvidaría una y otra vez de acabar con la vida de su joven dama, cuya destreza contando relatos se convirtió en legendaria. De hecho, muchos de los recursos empleados para mantener el interés del lector o del oyente son reconocidos y utilizados en el tiempo presente, tanto en la literatura escrita como en la oral, cuyo más adecuado exponente con el tema que nos trae a colación son los cuentacuentos. El conjunto de las historias de Sherezade, dio lugar a una de las obras más conocidas de la literatura universal: Las Mil y una Noches.

Pero ese día, el 271, la reina contó un cuento diferente. Los relatos habituales eran de amor, de aventura, de viajes, fantásticos…, pero ninguno de ellos hablaba sobre algún lugar conocido. En las recopilaciones de narraciones árabes, persas o hindúes que conforman el cuerpo del libro de los libros de cuentos, jamás se menciona una ciudad real, salvo Toledo —a la que sitúa en el país de Al Andalus—, ni un hecho legendario concreto, como el cruce del Estrecho de Gibraltar por las tropas musulmanas para entrar en la Península Ibérica. El cuento comenzaba, más o menos así:

Me he enterado, ¡oh rey feliz!, que había una ciudad llamada Toledo, capital del reino de los godos. Tenía un castillo que siempre estaba cerrado. Cada vez que moría un rey de los cristianos y le sucedía otro, ponían un buen candado más, con lo que llegó a haber en la puerta veinticuatro candados, pertenecientes a otros tantos reyes. En esto subió al poder un hombre que no pertenecía a la casa real, y quiso abrir los candados para ver qué contenía aquel alcázar.

She told us how, behind the castle door, there were drawings of warriors on horseback with spears, swords and turbans and a kind of curse for the reign of the last Gothic king: "The Arabs will dominate the country when this door is opened". The story ends by telling how the general

Así nos contó cómo, tras la puerta del castillo, se encontraron dibujos de guerreros a caballo con lanzas, espadas y turbantes y una especie de maldición para el reinado del último rey godo «Los árabes dominarán el país cuando se abra esta puerta». El relato acaba contando como

the 15th century, although as they are popular tales of oral transmission, they could be even older. So where could the legend of Toledo, which appears in some of the compilations, come from?

Curiously, the cover of the "Chronicle of King Don Rodrigo", also known as the "Saracen Chronicle", is illustrated with the key image of our history: the moment in which the last Visigoth king orders the padlocks to be removed from the fortress. Below it, a text in ancient Castilian and semi-gothic script reads as follows:

Its interior is one of the texts where the story of the loss and recovery of Spain is forged and has been kept alive to this day, with some touches and adaptations to eliminate the touches of fantasy and make it more digestible as real events. Written by Pedro del Corral in 1430, published in the 16th century, it is considered more a fictional novel with real characters than a historical account, which is what it might seem at first glance. In this sense, Menéndez Pelayo and Menéndez Pidal considered it to be "the oldest example of a historical novel with a national plot".

But the events it relates are almost 800 years old. It is evident that the story must have drawn from much older sources than the Chronicle of Don Rodrigo, an accumulation of stories gathered from Arab, Christian and Mozarabic traditions. And the fact is that the figure of the last Gothic king and the change he brought about in the Iberian Peninsula after his fall was such a remarkable event that it served as the basis for many chronicles, romances, cantares de gesta, episodes and legends of oral transmission.

Possibly the oldest written source of the legend is the chronicle of Ibn al-Qutiyya, from the 10th century, where we find -with certain variations- the same basic elements as the story of the Thousand and One Nights, only written about half a millennium ago.

Su interior es uno de los textos donde se forja la historia de la pérdida y la recuperación de España que se ha mantenido viva hasta nuestros días, con algunos retoques y adaptaciones para eliminar los toques de fantasía y hacerla más digerible como sucesos reales.

Posiblemente la fuente escrita más antigua de la leyenda sea la de la crónica de Ibn al-Qutiyya, del siglo X, donde encontramos —con ciertas variaciones— los mismos elementos básicos que la historia de las Mil y una Noches, solo que redactado como medio milenio atrás.

point that, although it is recognized that the Gothic fortress was eventually demolished, the same did not happen with the caves that were in its subsoil and that treasured its riches, known as the Caves of Hercules. For the local people, the curse was brought about by the magic of the protohistoric god himself, who was always represented with the keys of the Strait in his hands.

But Del Corral pretended that his fables passed for real historical facts, not in vain his work is defined as a chronicle and, in fact, it was considered so for a long time. There, in addition to Don Rodrigo, the popularity of another key character was forged, "Don Pelayo", whose very existence is doubted by many researchers despite the business dealings set up around Covadonga in the Principality of Asturias. Ultimately, the novel tried to create the artifice of a conquest to justify a reconquest that lasted a whopping 800 years. It is incredible that this fictional idea still survives in the imagination of so many people in our country. If today the long term for a politician is, at most, 4 years, how could anyone draw up plans that would last eight centuries?

Pero Del Corral pretendió que sus fábulas pasaran por hechos históricos reales, no en vano su obra se define como crónica y, de hecho, así fue considerada por mucho tiempo. Ahí, además de Don Rodrigo, se fraguó la popularidad de otro personaje clave, “Don Pelayo”, de cuya existencia misma dudan muchos investigadores a pesar del negociete montado alrededor de Covadonga en el principado de Asturias. Básicamente la novela trató de crear el artificio de una conquista para justificar una reconquista que duró la friolera de 800 años. Es increíble que aún perviva esa idea de ficción en el imaginario de tanta gente en nuestro país. Si hoy el largo plazo para un político es, a lo sumo, 4 años ¿cómo nadie iba a trazar planes que durasen ocho siglos?

The theme this year is One Planet, One Ocean, One Climate, One Future #Together with a view of showcasing the different ways in which the diverse representation of Gibraltar’s community is mitigating its plastic and carbon footprint and how the Climate Crisis is at the global forefront.

We are on the lookout for local businesses, organisations, charities and clubs that have implemented the highest number of green initiatives including minimising their carbon and plastic footprints. No sustainable transition is too small!

Healing is a branch away. Part 1.

As we continue to explore innovative approaches in urban design, we look to healthcare where the integration of nature into hospital environments has emerged as a promising concept to enhance patient well-being and healing outcomes.

At Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Singapore, gone are the bleak, lifeless hallways lit by cold fluorescent lights. They have created an urban oasis with lush gardens found close by where patients, staff and visitors can spend a peaceful moment.

The architects and planners looked at how they could engage the five senses and establish a sense of community. Natural surroundings create a calming ambiance, which aids in promoting relaxation and overall emotional well-being. Even patients recovering in rooms with views of green space report a greater sense of comfort and positivity, leading to improved healing experiences.

By creating a hospital blooming with biodiversity, folks were drawn to spaces where they could be together. Whether listening to the sound of falling water, smelling freshly bloomed flowers, or simply taking in the sight of the lush greenery, there was a reason to visit.

La curación está a una rama de distancia. Parte 1.

Mientras seguimos explorando enfoques innovadores en el diseño urbano, nos fijamos en la sanidad, donde la integración de la naturaleza en los entornos hospitalarios ha surgido como un concepto prometedor para mejorar el bienestar de los pacientes y los resultados de su curación.

En el Hospital Khoo Teck Puat de Singapur han desaparecido los pasillos sombríos y sin vida iluminados por fríos fluorescentes. Han creado un oasis urbano con exuberantes jardines cercanos donde pacientes, personal y visitantes pueden pasar un rato tranquilo.

Los arquitectos y planificadores estudiaron cómo hacer participar a los cinco sentidos y crear un sentimiento de comunidad. El entorno natural crea un ambiente tranquilizador que ayuda a promover la relajación y el bienestar emocional general. Incluso los pacientes que se recuperan en habitaciones con vistas a zonas verdes se sienten más cómodos y positivos, lo que mejora su experiencia curativa.

Al crear un hospital lleno de biodiversidad, la gente se sintió atraída por espacios en los que podían estar juntos. Ya fuera escuchando el sonido del agua al caer, oliendo las flores recién florecidas o simplemente contemplando la exuberante vegetación, había un motivo para visitarnos.

Desert Rose Adenium obesum

The Desert Rose is an extremely exotic-looking shrub or small tree, but it produces very attractive flowers that might look familiar to people in the Mediterranean. This is because it belongs to the Dogbane family (Apocynaceae) and is closely related to the Oleander Nerium oleander, which is so common in Mediterranean gardens and roadsides. The flowers look like fancier versions of the Oleander’s flower. Their blooming depends very much on weather conditions and during very dry or cold spells, they may drop their leaves. The Desert Rose is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa and southern Arabia, wherever dry savannah or semi-desert exists, and it is extremely well adapted to drought conditions. A notable feature of the plant is its caudex: a very swollen base of the trunk used for water storage. In some parts of its wide distribution, these caudices can be very impressive: on the Yemeni island of Socotra in particular, Desert Roses develop enormously swollen trunks or pachycauls. Desert Roses are popular as bonsais and in Europe, they are almost invariably grown indoors, as they are very sensitive to cold and rain. However, if grown in a medium with the right amount of drainage, they can be grown outdoors in Gibraltar.

El Mediterráneo es un punto caliente de biodiversidad mundial y muchas plantas de la región se utilizan en horticultura. El uso de plantas adaptadas a las condiciones locales es importante para la sostenibilidad de nuestros jardines, pero además, muchas plantas mediterráneas son hermosas y constituyen excelentes plantas de jardín. Las jaras son unas de las plantas con flor más típicas y reconocibles del Mediterráneo. Sus hermosas flores blancas o rosas, parecidas al papel, abundan en los días soleados de primavera. La mayoría de las especies de Cistus prefieren los suelos ácidos, por lo que, aunque la vegetación de Gibraltar está bien desarrollada y es diversa, los Cistus no son una característica predominante de nuestra flora. Sin embargo, el Cistus albidus tolera mejor los suelos básicos y puede ser común en zonas calizas, incluidas algunas de las montañas al norte del Peñón. Por tanto, es una jara adecuada para su uso en jardinería en Gibraltar. La especie se encuentra en todo el Mediterráneo y también es nativa de Gibraltar, pero es muy rara en el Alto Peñón. Sus flores rosas y su follaje afelpado de color verde blanquecino la convierten en una planta de jardín muy atractiva. En el Jardín Botánico de Gibraltar, la jara de hoja blanca se observa mejor en la rocalla mediterránea, junto a otras flores de Gibraltar y de la región en general.

It is truly a unique relationship whereby this community is also a family to many of us.

Ayudarse unos a otros con enfermedades mentales conlleva multitud de resultados positivos. En un mundo en el que los problemas de salud mental se extienden, el apoyo puede marcar una diferencia significativa en la vida de alguien. En primer lugar, ofrecer ayuda a las personas que luchan contra una enfermedad mental les proporciona una sensación de consuelo y comprensión. Saber que alguien se preocupa y está ahí para escuchar puede aportar esperanza y optimismo. Simples actos de amabilidad, como prestar oídos con empatía o compartir recursos útiles, pueden contribuir en gran medida a que alguien se sienta validado y apoyado. En segundo lugar, ayudar a otras personas con enfermedades mentales también beneficia a la persona que ofrece su apoyo. ADVENTURE IN THE SERRANÍA DE RONDA CANYONING IN THE "SIMA DEL DIABLO"

In the middle of the Serranía de Ronda is the village of Júzcar, very famous for the movie "The Smurfs". In this village we can find two very different canyons.

Canyoning consists of the descent of a river, usually in its upper section, where due to erosion the river is modeled with very diverse forms where we will have to improvise handrails, jumps or rappels.

This canyon is considered Level 1 for its duration, but it is a totally initiation activity because all its difficulties are optional and we can always use an alternative way to overcome it.

For the adventure we will have all the necessary technical material: 3 or 5 mm wetsuits depending on the temperature, harness, helmet, and collective technical material for the descent.

The Sima del Diablo runs through the waters of the river Zúa. A river always flowing, so we will find a lot of water at any time of year. The ravine begins entering a shady area of thick vegetation that will accompany us throughout the tour. As we move forward, we will have to overcome different obstacles and natural slides and finally reach the "Salto del Diablo", which gives its name to the ravine itself.

A spectacular waterfall of almost 12 meters high that we will have to overcome by rappelling down the waterfall itself or by the side of it, in a zip line or in flight if it has a lot of flow. The ravine ends near the Virgen de Moclón campsite, where our vehicles are waiting for us with food and change of clothes.

AVENTURA EN LA SERRANÍA DE RONDA BARRANQUISMO EN LA «SIMA DEL DIABLO»

En plena Serranía de Ronda se encuentra el pueblo de Júzcar, muy famoso por la película de “Los Pitufos”. En este pueblo podemos encontrarnos dos barrancos muy diferentes entre sí.

El barranquismo consiste en el descenso de un río, normalmente en su tramo alto, donde debido a la erosión modela el río con formas muy diversas donde tendremos que improvisar pasamanos, saltos o ráppeles.

Este barranco está considerado de Nivel 1 por su duración, pero es una actividad totalmente de iniciación ya que todas sus dificultades son opcionales y siempre podremos usar un camino alternativo para sortearla.

Para la aventura se dipondrá de todo el material técnico necesario: neoprenos 3 o 5 mm según la temperatura, arnés, casco, y material técnico colectivo para el descenso.

El Barranco

La Sima del Diablo discurre por las aguas del río de la Zúa. Un río siempre caudaloso, por lo que nos encontraremos una gran cantidad de agua en cualquier época del año.

El Barranco comienza adentrándonos en una zona sombría de espesa vegetación que nos acompañará durante todo el recorrido.

A medida que vayamos avanzando tendremos que sortear diferentes obstáculos y toboganes naturales y llegaremos por fin al «Salto del Diablo», que le da nombre al propio barranco. Un salto de agua espectacular de casi 12 metros de altura que tendremos que sortear rapelando por la propia cascada o por el lateral de ésta, en tirolina o bien en vuelo si tiene mucho caudal.

El barranco acaba cerca del camping Virgen de Moclón, donde nos esperan nuestros vehículos con la comida y ropa de cambio.

Los Hurones Reservoir

The reservoir and the village of Los Hurones was created in 1964, a hidden gem in the middle of nature, which supplies drinking water, electricity, and irrigation to the urban centers of the province of Cadiz. It might seem that we are in a Canadian place for the density of its forest or in a Galician village for its similarity in architecture, the houses that form this small village were used by employees and technicians who worked in the execution of this dam.

But we are in Cadiz, specifically the term of San Jose del Valle, near Algar and the towns of El Bosque and Ubrique.

We will make a route of about 10 kilometers with a low / medium difficulty, we will know the flora, fauna, and bathing place where it is impossible not to stop to take a picture because of its beauty, the Majaceite river can be seen in this area with a peculiar charm.

Arriving at the village we will also see the three institutions that are still preserved, hospital, school, and church dedicated to the Virgen del Pilar, we will cross the bridge, from which you can already see the impressive height of the dam, which collects almost 900 hectares with a capacity of 135 cubic hectometers that flows into the reservoir of Guadalcacín.

We will have lunch at Venta El Pantano, a place that persists over time thanks to the quality of its dishes and the attention of its employees, we can buy local products such as the famous village bread, molletes, sweets, olives and many more…

After lunch, we will go up to the dam to walk around it, see the grandeur of that territory and learn how it works.

From there and looking closely at the village it seems that the place resembles a traditional Christmas nativity scene because of the physiognomy of its houses and the environment.

You cannot miss the history behind this hidden paradise in the Natural Park Los Alcornocales.

El pantano y el poblado de Los Hurones se creó en el año 1964, una joya escondida en medio de la naturaleza, que abastece de agua potable, electricidad y riego a los núcleos urbanos de la provincia de Cádiz.

Podría parecer que nos encontramos en un paraje canadiense por la densidad de su bosque o en un pueblo gallego por su semejanza en la arquitectura, las casas que forman esta pequeña aldea fueron utilizadas por los empleados y técnicos que trabajaron en la ejecución de esta presa.

Pero estamos en Cádiz, concretamente el término de San José del Valle, próximo a Algar y a las poblaciones de El Bosque y Ubrique.

Realizaremos una ruta de unos 10 kilómetros con una dificultad baja/media, conoceremos la flora, fauna y lugar de baños donde es imposible no pararse a tomar una foto debido a su belleza, el rio Majaceite se deja ver en esta zona con un encanto peculiar.

Al llegar al poblado además veremos las tres instituciones que aún se conservan, hospital, colegio e iglesia dedicada a la Virgen del Pilar, cruzaremos el puente, desde el que ya se puede ver la impresionante altura de la presa, que recoge casi 900 hectáreas con una capacidad de 135 hectómetros cúbicos que desemboca en el embalse de Guadalcacín.

Haremos el almuerzo en la Venta El Pantano, un lugar que persiste en el tiempo gracias a la calidad de sus platos y la atención de sus empleados, podremos comprar productos de la tierra como el famoso pan de pueblo, molletes, dulces, aceitunas y un largo etc…

Tras la sobremesa, subiremos a la presa para pasear por ella, divisar la grandeza de aquel territorio y conocer el funcionamiento de esta.

Desde ahí y fijándote bien en el poblado pareciese que el lugar se asemeja por la fisionomía de sus casas y el entorno a un belén tradicional de Navidad No puedes perderte la historia que hay detrás de este paraíso escondido en pleno Parque Natural Los Alcornocales.

The Centennial Park, with an extension of 11 hectares has valuable elements of historical and cultural heritage of the city of Algeciras.

It is located within the boundaries of the "Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean Andalusia-Morocco" this reserve extends through some of the most emblematic territories of the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga in Spain and the provinces of Tangier, Tetuan, Larache and Chefchaouen in northern Morocco.

Of great importance, a part of the coastline is dominated by the flysch, a geological phenomenon created millions of years ago from the whims of an earth that decided to twist and play with the laws of physics in its own way, produced by the tectonic movements of the intercontinental plates.

A park where we can admire flora, wild olive, cork oak, Moorish gorse, jerguen, gall oak and its fauna, such as crustaceans Orchestia mediterranea and Tylos sardous, lizards, snake necklace, common bat, brown rat, sandpipers, terns and herons among others, as its location makes it an important place to observe the passage of migratory birds, as well as cetaceans, and a splendid view of the coast of the neighboring continent.

On the left side we are accompanied by the Chinarral which has fine sands and calm waters sheltered by a small inlet. The bottom of its waters is largely rocky highlighting several reefs a few meters

from the coast known as Las Hermanas, very dangerous for navigation, and to the right of the Getares inlet is the Getares beach whose sands, of fine thickness, come mainly from the contributions of the many seasonal streams that flow into the area and in particular the river Pícaro that formed in the past a marsh and a dune arrow.

For our route it is necessary to wear appropriate clothing for the terrain and the weather. We will start this trail by visiting the Interpretation Center of the Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean "Strait of Gibraltar" at the entrance of the park.

At the edge of the coast we will find four viewpoints where we will take some pictures of the spectacular views, a few meters away, in the rest area, we will observe the flysch and listen to the explanation of how they were formed.

If we are lucky we will be able to observe some dolphins dancing in the waters of the Bay of Algeciras and enjoy some of their jumps.

Moving forward, we will go back in time visiting historical sites of the park such as the 16th century watchtower, ruins of the fort of San Garcia, machine gun nests and bunker.

Before continuing we will climb the iron lookout tower from where we can have a 360º view of the city and its surroundings.

We will finish the trail at the entrance of the park, where we can enjoy a refreshment or coffee in its facilities.

El parque del Centenario, con una extensión de 11 hectáreas cuenta con valiosos elementos del patrimonio histórico y cultural de la ciudad de Algeciras.

Se encuentra dentro de los límites de la «Reserva de la Biosfera Intercontinental del Mediterráneo Andalucía-Marruecos» esta reserva se extiende por algunos de los territorios más emblemáticos de las provincias de Cádiz y Málaga, en España y de las provincias de Tánger, Tetuán, Larache y Chefchaouen en el Norte de Marruecos.

De gran importancia, una parte de la costa la protagonizan los flysch, un fenómeno geológico creado hace millones de años a partir de los caprichos de una tierra que decidió retorcerse y jugar con las leyes de la física a su manera, producida por los movimientos tectónicos de las placas intercontinentales.

Un parque en el que podremos admirar flora, acebuche, alcornoque, aulaga morisca, jerguen, quejigo y su fauna, como crustáceos Orchestia mediterránea y Tylos sardous, lagartijas, culebra de collar, murciélago común, rata parda, correlimos, charranes y garzas entre otras, ya que su situación hace que sea un lugar importante para la observación del paso de las aves migratorias, así como de los cetáceos, y una espléndida visión de la costa del continente vecino. Al lado izquierdo nos acompaña el Chinarral que posee arenas finas y aguas tranquilas al abrigo de una pequeña ensenada. El fondo de sus aguas es en gran parte rocoso destacando varios arrecifes a unos metros de la costa conocidos como Las Hermanas, muy peligrosos para la navegación, y a la derecha

de la ensenada de Getares se encuentra la playa de Getares cuyas arenas, de fino grosor, proceden principalmente de las aportaciones de los numerosos arroyos estacionales que desembocan en la zona y en particular del río Pícaro que formó en el pasado una marisma y una flecha dunar.

Para nuestra ruta es necesario llevar ropa adecuada al terrero y a la climatología, iniciaremos este sendero visitando en la entrada del parque el Centro de Interpretación de la Reserva de la Biosfera Intercontinental del Mediterráneo «Estrecho de Gibraltar».

Al borde de la costa nos encontraremos con cuatros miradores donde tomaremos algunas fotos de las espectaculares vistas, a escasos metros, en el área de descanso, observaremos los flysch y escucharemos la explicación de cómo se formaron. Con suerte podremos observar algún delfín danzando en las aguas de la Bahía de Algeciras y obsequiarnos con algunas de sus saltos.

Adelantando nuestros pasos, retrocederemos en el tiempo visitando lugares históricos del parque como son la torre almenara del siglo XVI, ruinas del fuerte de San García, nidos de ametralladores y bunker.

Antes de continuar subiremos a la Torre mirador de hierro desde donde podremos tener una visión de 360º de la ciudad y su entorno.

Finalizaremos el sendero en la entrada del parque, donde podremos disfrutar de un refresco o café en sus instalaciones.

Forest Bath in Pinar del Rey

In the Natural Park Los Alcornocales, the Pinar del Rey is located between the municipalities of San Roque and Castellar de la Frontera, in Cadiz.

Its origin dates back to 1800, this place was chosen to plant pine trees (Pinus Pinea) brought from Vejer de la Frontera, and thus obtain wood for the construction of ships.

It currently consists of a recreational area with a picnic area and barbecues, the Alhaja stream, the Nature Classroom and a botanical garden. In addition, there are two trails: El Cerro del Águila and Tajo del Pajarraco.

A peculiar place, with a mild climate, and a migratory bird route. Its environmental conditions make it a paradise for flora. We can even see some plants that only occur in northern Spain and the Canary Islands. We will walk through a mixed forest, with cork oaks, gall oaks, poplars, alders and ash trees, with a wide variety of botanical species, some of them endangered. En el Parque Natural Los Alcornocales, se ubica el Pinar del Rey entre los términos municipales de San Roque y Castellar de la Frontera, en Cádiz.

Su origen se remonta a 1800, este lugar fue elegido para plantar ejemplares de pinos piñoneros (Pinus Pinea) traídos desde Vejer de la Frontera, y obtener así madera para la construcción de navíos.

Actualmente consta de un área recreativa con una zona de picnic y barbacoas, el arroyo de Alhaja, el Aula de Naturaleza y un jardín botánico. Además, existen dos senderos: El Cerro del Águila y el Tajo del Pajarraco.

Un lugar peculiar, de clima suave, y paso de ruta de aves migratorias. Sus condiciones ambientales lo convierten en un paraíso para la flora. Incluso podemos ver algunas plantas que únicamente se dan en el norte de España y en las Islas Canarias. Recorreremos un bosque mixto, con alcornoques, quejigos, álamos, alisos y fresnos, con una extensa variedad de especies botánicas, algunas de ellas amenazadas. Y por supuesto descubriremos su rica y variada fauna.

Además, el Pinar del Rey, formó parte de un asentamiento arenoso de fondos marinos, con lo cual podremos encontrar fácilmente conchas y piezas marinas.

Descubre el efecto acumulativo que tiene la naturaleza, los matices en los que nunca te habías fijado, la calma que ofrece un lugar con tanta magia.

Para comenzar la actividad dejaremos el coche al final del aparcamiento de la zona recreativa del Pinar del Rey (San Roque), es importante llevar agua, protección solar, (opcional esterilla para suelo y cámara de fotos).

The treatment, cure, and care provided to deal with some evil or disease was known to the Greeks as therapeia. Our word “treatment” is derived from this. It is normal for someone to wonder how they will administer the forest to them if we add it. Will it be in pills, syrups, or serum? It doesn’t harm, so don’t worry. Even with all the humor, individuals who read us need to understand that we lead the individual to a total immersion in Nature, in some type of natural habitat, preferably woods.

Using the forest as therapy means that we will use the benefits provided by Nature as a way to intervene in people’s health. Not only in their physical health, but also in their mental and social health; even, for those who so wish, in their spiritual health.

Each of these people has a specific need, or a specific health problem, or a personal difficulty. Taking into account these personal needs, we will try to find the most concise way to repair it, doing it in a structured way.

The approach of the Forest Baths is always therapeutic. The professionals who are dedicated to the Forest Baths are trained to be able to collaborate with guarantees with health professionals, making available to the general public, to the Institutions, all the set of interventions that we have.

What are we talking about then? We are talking about promoting healthy lifestyles, those that improve our quality of life. We are talking about relieving the day-to-day stress in which we live. Si le añadimos lo del bosque es normal que alguien pueda pensar, ¿cómo me van a dar el bosque?, ¿en pastillas, jarabes, lo tendrán en suero? No se preocupen, no duele. Bromas aparte, lo que tienen que saber los que nos lean es que llevamos a la persona a realizar una inmersión completa, mente y cuerpo, en la Naturaleza, en algún tipo de entorno natural, especialmente los bosques.

Usar el bosque como terapia significa que utilizaremos los beneficios que procuran la Naturaleza, como una forma de intervenir en la salud de las personas. No solo en su salud física, también en la mental y en la social; incluso, para los que así lo deseen, en la salud espiritual. Cada una de esas personas tiene una necesidad específica, o un problema de salud concreto, o alguna dificultad personal. Teniendo en cuenta estas necesidades personales trataremos de buscar la forma más concisa de repararlo, haciéndolo de manera estructurada.
