Orange Pages Tenerife’s leading business directory is expanding. We have the most up to date business directory online at www.orangepagesonline.com and in print every month via our Orange Pages Lifestyle supplement in the Tenerife Property & Business Guide. We are officially the biggest and brightest publication on the island!

Remember last month we told you about some unwanted dog food, and how we intended to give it to needy refuges? Well, we added to the hill of food and turned it into a mountain of no less than 6,000 kilos of doggie biscuits. We then shared it out amongst the refuges on a ratio basis, and it was gratefully received by Adepac in El Sauzal, Addanca Candelaria, K9, Esperanza del Sur, Dingo Dogs, Madat, San Francisco de los Animales, and some home-fostering groups like Animal Help, and Tiny Feet. Spreading the wealth feels good – we hope to repeat it soon. We also helped co ordinate some help for the Arona LifeGuards locked for months in a pay dispute yet still patrolling our beaches. After financing the yearly vaccinations of their dog Sebastian, we helped collect food for the cash-strapped lifeguards themselves. A good day was had by all, and again, it was to do our bit.

Our stats are amazing too – with more than 50,000 hits on our website monthly, Orange Pages is certainly getting people’s attention. Now is your chance to get a free advertisement on our website – so make it your business to be part of our business.

The Adventures of O.P This month ‘O.P’ would like to clarify the pronunciation of his name. It is O.P as in ‘Soapy’, not OP as in POP. He would also like to thank all of the readers who took the time to write to him. He does try to answer all of his fan mail. His email address is OP@orangepagesonline.com O.P has been to the top of Mt Teide (pictured right) this month. He says it was too windy and he couldn´t wait to get back to the warmth of lower ground. O.P also visited Koala Sur, his birthplace, because his elder brother needed to see the vet. O.P said “I was very worried because my brother had a huge lump, but after a short treatment of antibiotics he is back to his usual floppy self” If you would like O.P to visit your business, please email OP@orangepagesonline.com or call 922 703 121.

TRIPS AND FALLS – PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE! Falls are the source of most injuries in bathrooms. In one year 234,000 people 15 and older visited emergency rooms due to injuries suffered in bathrooms. Most of these injuries were caused by falls, which can be especially dangerous for older adults.

Activities that take place in the bathroom, such as showering and bathing, are a simple part of most people’s daily routine. Yet, slips in the bath and falls in the shower or from the toilet may cause serious injuries.

Naturally, health and community groups take fall risks and injuries very seriously. Through fall prevention programs, some very sobering statistics on falls have been revealed. Here is some data gathered from studies and surveys to consider: “Older people (65 and older) typically have greater difficulties with mobility, vision and balance making them more likely to fall or slip which accounted for 79% of bathroom injuries for this demographic,” Over a third of the elderly required hospital admission following a bathroom incident. Almost onethird (30 percent) of adults aged 65 and above who were injured in bathrooms were diagnosed with fractures. Among adults aged 85 and older, 38 percent were hospitalised as a result of their injuries. Steps for Safety in the Bathroom Certain home safety measures may reduce the risk for all household members of being injured in the bathroom. Some prevention strategies include: · Adding non-slip surfaces and grab bars inside and outside of the bath or shower to reduce slips and falls.. · Installing grab bars next to the toilet for added support, if needed. Preventing Falls among Older Adults - Older adults can take steps to make falls less likely. If

you are 65 or older, take the following steps to reduce your risk of falling: · Get some exercise: Lack of exercise can lead to weak legs, which increases the chance of falling. Exercise programs like Tai Chi can increase strength as well as improve balance, making falls less likely for aging adults. · Be mindful of medications: Some medicines or combinations of medicines can have side effects like dizziness or drowsiness. This can make falls more likely. Having a doctor or pharmacist review all your medications can help reduce the chance of risky side effects and drug interactions. · Keep your vision sharp: Poor vision can make it harder to get around safely. To help make sure you’re seeing clearly, have your eyes checked every year and wear glasses or contact lenses with the right prescription strength. · Eliminate hazards at home. About half of all falls happen at home. A home safety check can help identify fall hazards, like clutter and poor lighting that should be removed or changed. · Install a walk-in bath or shower. Mobility Plus Tenerife have many years experience in creating beautiful and safe bathrooms fully designed, and installed by our in house team. A designer will visit your home and give you an all-inclusive price

which will include all of our added safety features such as non-slip flooring and support rails. We have a massive range to choose from delivered direct. Installation can be in as little as one day depending upon the work involved. We will leave everything tidy and remove all the rubbish for you.

Call 634 369 647 TODAY. It may save a fall!

Tenerife South Management Services Sun-kissed Tenerife is attracting property hunters from all over Europe looking to take advantage of the falling real estate prices around Spain. And on top of the thousands of people looking to relocate to Tenerife, there are the five million tourists that visit our island from all over the world every year. Tenerife’s residents and tourists need good quality accommodation whether it’s a beautiful apartment with a sea view, rural property high up in the hills or a private villa with all the trimmings. The Canary Islands are going through a Renaissance period in terms of interest from investors looking to move to our island of ‘Eternal Spring’. The latter part of 2012 saw property prices drop and this trend continues into 2013 with many villas, apartments, houses and rural properties on the market at extremely favourable prices. In fact, the statistics for January 2013 reveal that house sales in the Canary Islands increased to 1,630. 504 more than the same period the previous year. Tenerife South Management Service has been established since 1991 and are experts in the Tenerife property market. Over the years they’ve looked after hundreds of properties on behalf of investors. Their offices in Los Cristianos are as busy as ever and they maintain their record as a leading property management service on the island.

Working with property owners all over the island who rent out to holidaymakers, TSMS know only too well that investors are always on the lookout for a property management company they can trust to look after all aspects of the renting process – this is what the TSMS team do best. “One of our main aims is to offer our customers a property management service that is second to none. It’s very difficult to manage and look after your property when you are two thousand miles away, therefore you need a company that is reliable and trustworthy to protect your investment and give peace of mind. “We believe no other company in Tenerife can give you the comprehensive and professional level of property management that Tenerife South Management Services can offer. With our local office in Los Cristianos and our friendly professionally trained staff, most with hotel and resort experience, plus our own in-house laundry service, we are uniquely placed to care for your property,” said a TSMS spokesman. He added: “We are available 24/7, are a fully registered legal company with 21 years experience on the island. Obviously we have a very well established clientele and right now we are looking for more holiday rental properties because we have a lot of clients waiting. We have no management fees for the first year and offer either full or part time management services. Anyone is welcome to check out the superb references which we have gained from past and present owners and clients.”

LET’S LOOK AFTER OUR FELINE FRIENDS CAT (Cats Aid Tenerife) is an organisation dedicated to helping keep the cat population under control. The man behind CATS is Dave O’Horo, who has been working hard to get CAT fully registered and legal so he can help neuter as many felines as possible. CAT does not take in strays off the streets; they focus on applying the mantra: TNR which stands for Trap, Neuter and Release. He works with local vets to sterilize cats found in the grounds of hotels, residential complexes and elsewhere before releasing the newly-spayed cat back to where they were found. Dave told Orange Pages: “We are not a refuge for cats, although we do have a few cats in our care looking to be re-homed. I would like people to think of CAT as an organisation that is committed to helping cats in Tenerife. We do that by applying our mantra of ‘Trap, Neuter and Release’. In an ideal world our work will eventually lead to less cats being born and keeping the cat population in Tenerife from increasing out of control. Our aim is to slow down the population increase and therefore stop some of the suffering that goes on.” Dave has been involved with helping

cats for many years, having worked in similar projects in Ireland before he moved to Tenerife. It’s worrying to think that one female cat can have literally dozens of litters of kittens in her early life which leads to a lot of suffering for both her and her kittens. “There is a huge amount of cats around Tenerife and hopefully we can help in keeping the numbers down. It’s unrealistic to think we can stop the numbers going up too much, but our aim is to neuter as many cats as possible to keep the population under control. “We work with a very good local vet, depending on where a cat or cats are found, get them neutered

and then release them back into the environment from which we took them”, added Dave. CAT relies on funding, so all donations are gratefully appreciated. Check out the website on www.cats-aid.

Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages - Orange Pages 2.9% in the year to March; in Greece they fell -0.2%. Yet both countries are saddled with the European Central Bank’s 0.75% benchmark “refinancing” interest rate.

The 25th of July 1797 was not a good day for Horatio Nelson. His attempt to take Santa Cruz de Tenerife had failed and nearly 400 of his men were wounded or missing. The admiral himself had taken a bullet in his right arm, which would later require its amputation. A reminder of that injury will go to auction in June: it is a letter written by Nelson in 1804. Even after seven years of practise his lefthanded penmanship was sloppy. It took considerably less time than that for the euro to recover from the injuries it sustained in Cyprus. Investors were initially shocked to hear that firms and people with more than €100k in their bank accounts would lose a proportion of it; up to 80% if it was in the wrong bank. They were dismayed at the imposition of capital and exchange controls limiting cash withdrawals and the movement of money out of the country. They were alarmed to find out that Cyprus would in fact need to find twice as much as

the €6bn collected in the raid on bank accounts. And they were spooked when the EU/IMF/ECB troika instructed Cyprus to raise money by selling its gold reserves.

There is surely more euro-angst to come, be it from Cyprus, Italy, Greece or France, but for the moment investors are not fretting about the single currency. That is not to say they have recovered the enthusiasm they felt at the beginning of the year but they are

at least relaxed about the euro. The immediate threat is in Rome, where the disparate factions in parliament must choose a president. The progress - or lack thereof - towards making that selection will be an indicator of whether Italy can form a government with the senators it elected at the end of February of if there will have to be another general election. If the latter, look for investors to become more nervous about the euro once again.

Nevertheless, the euro is at the same level against sterling today as it was before the “rescue” of Cyprus and it is a cent higher against the US dollar. It seems that after years of euro crises investors have decided that whatever doesn’t kill the euro makes it stronger. But the relentless pressure is not helping the eurozone economy. The purchasing managers’ index, which is compiled from a comprehensive survey of firms’ orders, sales and staffing levels, shows Euroland business activity falling in every sector and in almost every country. Even German manufacturing is on the slide. Retail sales are going down, both on a monthly and an annual basis. Inflation data highlight the problem of a onesize-fits-all Euroland monetary policy. In the Netherlands, consumer prices went up by

The Spanish Property Inheritance Tax Time Bomb Many property owners in Spain are sitting on a ticking Inheritance Tax (IHT/ISD) time bomb. Most are not aware that when they purchase their “dream” property that they are unknowingly creating a potential financial burden for their beneficiaries. The surviving partner, or beneficiaries, may have a tax bill which exceeds the value of the entire Spanish asset being inherited plus the cost of obtaining probate in more than one country. ‘Tax Treaties’ are often quoted as a method of eradicating IHT, there are treaties that exist between Spain and the UK which reduce the risk of double taxation but these are only effective if the taxes are similar in nature. The fundamental difference between IHT in Spain and the UK is that in Spain the beneficiary pays the tax and will receive the tax demand and in the UK it is the Estate which receives the Tax demand which means there is no treaty on Inheritance Tax. The process of inheriting the property is complex requiring the beneficiaries to travel to Spain to obtain an NIE number (if they do not already have one), verify the Will through a Spanish lawyer and pay the Land registry and Notary fees plus the calculated Spanish IHT, all within 6 months to avoid late penalties being applied. Frequently owners are advised to re-finance the property as IHT is not charged if there is an outstanding mortgage and loan, this option can leave the beneficiaries with a huge debt they cannot pay off and many lenders will only finance the ownership if suitable life insurance is taken out. A Life Insurance policy covering the mortgage will mean the property is fully owned by the beneficiaries

and inheritance tax is applied to the total value. Owning a property with your children is another suggestion. This is risky and problematic as their share of the property may be jeopardised through financial or marital issues and if they pre-decease the parents then taxes are payable to get the property back. Our solution to the IHT/ISD problem in Spain is for the owner/s to invest the property into a UK Private Limited company which they would own as Shareholder/s remaining in complete control of their asset. (There is no 7-10% Property Transfer tax payable on this transaction and if the property is invested using a formula agreed by the Hacienda (Spanish Tax office) the property can be invested at a figure which will limit any Capital Gains tax exposure in Spain on the transfer of the property into the UK company) A UK company should not be confused with an offshore company which is obliged to pay an annual tax of 3%. A further advantage of the UK company structure is the ability to offset certain expenses such as mortgage interest, council tax bills and maintenance and could also include car hire and flight costs for the Directors when travelling to Spain. The Corporate structure is a simple solution, costing less than most probate and legal fees, and saves the additional reporting and taxation burdens for the beneficiaries. Our unique service is available to all Nationalities including both Residents and Non Residents of Spain and can be completed within 2 to 4 weeks if required. TOURISTS TAKE A TITSA TO VOLCANO

TENERIFE VOTED BEST DESTINATION

A new plan to get more tourists en route to our stunning National Park to check out Mount Teide is underway.

A travel survey shows that Tenerife is a top summer destination for British travellers.

Thanks to a promotion by Tenerife’s national bus service TITSA, holidaymakers can travel up to the centre of the island to visit El Teide and even take a cable car to the top for the special price of just 37 euros and 24 euros for children (under 14). This promotion is for tourists only and tickets can be purchased on board the number 342 bus running from Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos to Teide. Residents can already get a discount on the cable car up to the top of Spain’s highest peak which reaches a staggering 3, 718 metres.

According to the poll, carried out by Jet2.com, Tenerife and Majorca are the best places to visit to escape the cold climes of the UK and are easy to get to with low-cost flights. Over 1,600 people took part in the survey which shows Tenerife still comes out on top for British tourists in 2013.

The Celebrity Cruise Company’s “Celebrity Reflection” arrived in Santa Cruz for her first visit at the end of last month. The liner, with 2,800 passengers mostly from the U.S.A., and a crew of 1,100, spent the day in the city after crossing the Atlantic from Miami as part of a 17-day cruise, ending in Rome.

One in three adults in the UK has high blood pressure, but a third of them don’t even know they have it because it’s symptomless. So while many people think they’ll experience warning signs such as headaches or a red face, the reality is the first symptom of high blood pressure can be a stroke or heart attack. High blood pressure is also a risk factor for kidney disease and vascular dementia. Once it’s diagnosed, the condition can be successfully managed. That why it’s so important to have regular blood pressure checks. While high blood pressure can affect absolutely anyone, young or old, super-fit or couch potato, there are some factors which will increase your risk of developing it. Blood pressure tends to rise as we get older. For example, research has found that 20 per cent of those in their 20s have high blood pressure, 40 per cent in their 40s and 60 per cent in their 60s. So it’s increasingly important to have regular checks as you get older. If one or more members of your family (usually a parent or sibling) has high blood pressure then you’ll be at increased risk, and the more family members who have high blood pressure, the greater the risk. If you’ve already been diagnosed with high blood pressure, be sure to pass this information on to your children too. Being overweight, not doing enough exercise, drinking too much alcohol, and eating too much salt and not enough fruit and vegetables can all contribute to high blood pressure.

In keeping with tradition, Pedro Rodriguez Zaragoza, president of the Port Authority, presented the ship’s captain a commemorative book on the history of the port, while passengers and crew were greeted on the quayside by a folk group. Passengers were also offered a free bus service to get to the centre of the city together with maps of the city provided by the Island’s Tourist Information Service.

12

Blood pressure measurements are written as two numbers, e.g ‘120/80’ or ‘120 over 80’. The top number is the systolic, which is when your heart is squeezing and pushing blood around the body, and the bottom number is the diastolic, when your heart relaxes. These numbers are measured in units of millilitres of mercury (or mmHg). We should be all be aiming for a blood pressure of 120/80 or lower, which is the optimal level. Our blood pressure naturally fluctuates throughout the day, but if your readings are consistently at 140/90 or above over a number of weeks (both or just one of the numbers), then you probably have high blood pressure and will need to lower it. If your readings are between these two levels, then you’d certainly benefit from lowering your blood pressure. A few lifestyle changes could really improve your blood pressure, helping you to avoid developing high blood pressure in the future. Professor Graham MacGregor, Chairman of the Blood Pressure Association, says: “If you’ve been prescribed blood pressure lowering medicines by your doctor, then it’s really

important you take them. Far too many people stop taking their medicines when they see their numbers going down, so their blood pressure goes up again and with this their risk of stroke and heart attack. The Blood Pressure Association recommends five top tips to lower blood pressure, which can help some people to avoid developing high blood pressure, and for those already taking medicines, can reduce the amount they need to take: 1. Cut down on salt – no more than 6g a day (a teaspoon), including hidden salt in foods like bread and cereals, so be sure to check labels. 2. Get your ‘five a day’ of fruit and veg. 3. Stay active, 30 minutes of aerobic activity five times a week. 4. Maintain your ideal weight. 5. Keep an eye on alcohol, no more than 2-3 units a day for women, 3-4 a day for men. Different foods, just like fashion, have their moments in the spotlight. Pre-Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, beetroot was mostly served as the cooked vinegary purple highlight on a side salad. Thankfully there’s been a beetroot revival of late and you can buy the root vegetable as it comes, freshly peeled in packets from the supermarket, in crisp form, or as a juice. A good thing too, as new research indicates a glass of beetroot juice can lower blood pressure. Beets are a good source of folate and potassium. Several studies have linked folate intake with reduced risk of high blood pressure, and potassium helps to normalise blood pressure by balancing out the negative effects of salt intake. However, researchers from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry have found that along with these beetroot benefits, lies another: nitrate. Nitrate within beetroots appears to have a particularly beneficial effect on blood pressure, widening blood vessels to aid flow. The downside? The researchers warn that eating beetroots or drinking the juice might well turn your urine pink. Something that could give you quite a shock if you’re not prepared! Simple activities such as squeezing a stress ball can help reduce your blood pressure. So, aside from the obvious, what can you do? According to new research, there are a

number of simple exercises that will also help - aerobic, resistance or strength training, and isometric hand-grip exercises. An expert research panel from the American Heart Association assessed three different types of alternative treatments: exercises, behavioural therapies (meditation, for example); and device-based treatments such as acupuncture. Their aim was to find answers to one of the most common questions from patients diagnosed with high blood pressure: “I don’t like to take medications, what can I do to lower my blood pressure.” The panel found that the alternative therapies were largely safe, only rarely causing side effects or raising health risks. The list of treatments they looked at included, walking, yoga, meditation, acupuncture, device-guided breathing, relaxation and stress-reduction techniques, aerobic exercise, resistance or strength training, isometric hand-grip exercises. Exercises fared the best, with all types of exercise lowering blood pressure to some extent. But by far the most surprising was the effectiveness of isometric hand-grip exercises – after four weeks patients saw a 10% drop in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. (The researchers warn that these exercises should be avoided by patients with blood pressure of more than 180/100mm Hg, however.) Behavioural therapies such as meditation were found to help by a small amount, and there wasn’t enough evidence on yoga or other relaxation techniques for the researchers to conclude that they are of strong benefit either. It was a similar story with other treatments such as acupuncture. “Most alternative therapies may therefore not be a valid alternative to medication, as they reduce systolic blood pressure by only 2-10 mm Hg,” says chair of the research panel Dr, Brook, of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, US. “Whereas standard doses of a blood pressure lowering drug reduce systolic blood pressure by about 10-15 mm Hg.” Check with your doctor before attempting any new aerobic or strength-based exercise, but here are some simple isometric hand-grip exercises you can try today: Press your hands together in a prayer position and firmly push. Keep breathing deeply throughout, counting to 10. Rest for ten seconds then repeat four more times. Get yourself a stress ball. Or simply a foam toy ball that you can hold in the palm of your hand. Squeeze it firmly, hold for ten seconds, then release. Repeat four times daily. Invest in an isometric hand exerciser. These are like pliers but with a spring in the middle so that with each squeeze you use your hand muscles. Good luck!

by Orange Pages very own Astrologer - Hara Davis D.F. Astrol.S.

The second sign of the zodiac, an earthy sign and one that deals with material reality, often at the expense of other areas of life. If you were born with the Sun in Taurus, your goal in life is to find and keep serenity and peace. Venus rules the sign and she is goddess of love and beauty. The BULL is the symbol for the sign and that tells us a lot about Taurus. If there is a bull in a field and it is well-fed and comfy, it is very content and doesn’t do much but enjoy the pleasures of nature. Taurus likes simplicity and is very suspicious of anything complicated and has a real aversion to drama. The one thing they dread is change of any sort. Aries is the initiator, the sign that encourages change. Taurus is all about consolidation and a need for roots and stability. Try to push the bull in the field to do something it doesn’t want to do and it can become very obstinate; tease or shove it and it can burst into a violent rage. For years Taurus can endure a situation including carrying emotional and physical burdens with no complaints. But given a last straw, the rage of the bull can really destroy. This may only happen once or twice in a lifetime but for the quick-tempered bulls this blind fury can happen once or twice a year. The MYTH associated with Taurus is that of Theseus killing the Minotaur. King Minos of Crete made a deal with Poseidon in which he would sacrifice his best white bull in exchange for mastery over the sea. The king cheated and sacrificed another bull because he wanted to keep the best one (Taurus tend to want to hold onto things and that includes people). In revenge, Poseidon asked Aphrodite to afflict Minos’ wife with an uncontrollable lust for the white bull (lust is another Taurus trait!). The offspring of this strange union was the Minotaur with the body of a man and the head of a bull who fed on human flesh. Minos was so ashamed that he hid it in a labyrinth and youths and maidens were thrown in as food. Theseus volunteered to be thrown in, and killed the bull escaping with the help of Ariadne’s thread. The labyrinth represents the tangle of human emotions that often defeat Taurus, who

are so realistic and down-to-earth that they often miss what they can’t see. Taurus finds emotions, undercurrents and motives too complicated and irrational to deal with. The thread symbolises the plan and purpose that Taurus needs to face up to such abstract concepts. The Minotaur is the animal side of Taurus – once they desire something they can get obsessed with it, whether it’s food, money, status or sex. The trick is to get the desire to work for you rather than drag you along. Taurus lives very much in the senses. They have a flair for colour and design, a love of music and make good singers or composers. Their sense of touch is well-developed and they love textures and massage. Their sense of taste could lead to a weight problem, while their sense of smell gives them an affinity for perfume and incense. Their senses are so acute that they can’t bear anything that isn’t harmonious. Their love of beauty is such that they may overlook other qualities such as wit, intelligence or character. So be careful, Taurus, not to judge a book by its cover! Taurus seeks peace through inner security but this brings us to the SHADOW side of the sign. They can be fooled by its reflection in the world – money, possessions, land, retirement plans and pensions. If this happens, all serenity goes and a spirit-killing stability sets in. Remember, the only real security comes from within. Their iron

will can become stubbornness and this leads to a failure to grow and change. There is also an all-or-nothing attitude, a fanaticism that may be hidden in many Taurus but can be found strongly in others – a fixed, persistent, determined and obsessive attitude. In ordinary life Taurus fanaticism can surface in intolerance – they don’t accept others’ viewpoints easily. If an idea doesn’t fit into their scheme of things then it doesn’t exist! Prejudice can be a major difficulty – it takes a lot to change their mind and they can be quite offensive or rude if you contradict them. There is great creative power in Taurus if only they can find a purpose, a meaning or a field of work to apply their tremendous drive and energy. Deep inside is a need to be useful, to produce or build something solid and permanent. Until they can find this direction they will go on chewing the cud in an aimless, lethargic way often dependent on the support of others.

Taurus in 2013:

FINAL ADVICE for Taurus: recognise that life is full of things you can’t absorb through the senses – there are mysteries and layers of meaning which can’t be proved by facts or statistics. Also, don’t trample bull-like over others’ values – you need to be flexible and tolerant. If you can deal with your own Minotaur, you can become incredibly strong, patient and courageous. NB. Your sun sign is only a part of your whole chart. The position of all the other planets needs to be taken into account when summarising your personality. Contact Hara for a full analysis.

This is just based on your sun-sign (Taurus) but if you would like a more thorough analysis of the year ahead based on all the other planets, then please contact Hara on 922 333945 or 645988571 or email her on hara.davis@yahoo. com. 2013 should be a year of change and variety for Taurus. The year starts with a desire to expand horizons and you may come up with some original ideas for making money - don’t squander your resources though! You may not be able to fully understand your own restlessness this year and the May eclipses will make you want to start things anew or be more progressive than usual. Any risks you take now may have consequences in 6 months time. In June (Jupiter moves into Cancer) communication is emphasised and you are happy to soak up knowledge. The October eclipses are sensitive for you and you can’t take relationships for granted at this time – secrets may be revealed! 2013 is a time for adding new things to your life and at the same time enjoying the security and permanence that you love so much.

TRAVELLERS FLOCK TO TOURIST INFO CENTRES

HIGH-TECH FIVER IN CIRCULATION

The amount of holidaymakers using Tenerife’s Tourist Offices has hit the one million mark. Figures have been released that show a total of 988,329 people visited the network of tourist offices around the island. The numbers reveal that 238,389 British people used the service, 211,103 Germans and 66,641 French people. Carlos Alonso, the Vice President of Tenerife Tourism, has recognised the important role Tenerife’s tourist offices play in being a ‘main tool of communication with travellers.’ The most visited office in 2012 was in Puerto de la Cruz in the north where 163,743 visited last year, followed by the Arona office at Las Vistas beach which had 73,571 visitors. Most people wanted to know about bus timetables, leisure attractions like boat trips and excursion tours.

A new five Euro banknote is soon to be in circulation in Tenerife. The new fiver contains enhanced security features and displays the watermark and hologram of a portrait of Europa, a figure from Greek mythology. It will also be the new colour of emerald green compared to the old style blue and easier to identify for blind and visually impaired people thanks to short raised lines on the left and right ridges of the note. The new five Euro banknote will be the first of many new notes dispatched over the next few years in Tenerife with new 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 Euro notes planned. Eventually the new green 5 Euro note will replace the old blue one which will go out of tender at a date to be decided later.

parents, Mary and Jack, who have to rectify the tragic circumstances. The main victims are Cynthia´s children, James, Junior and Gabby. Martina Cole´s books are easy to read but repetitive. Ann Patchett´s State of Wonder is set deep in the Amazon jungle and follows The Return of Captain John Emmett, by Elizabeth Speller is, I suspect, a copy of Pat Barker´s Regeneration trilogy. Laurence Barker has turned his back on the world due to the horrors of the Great War and a family tragedy. He is living in London in 1920 and receives a letter from an ex-girlfriend, Mary Emmett. Her brother John, like Laurence an officer during the war, has apparently killed himself while in the care of a remote veterans’ hospital, and Mary needs to know why. Laurence begins to investigate with the help of his friend Charles, and becomes confused about the connection between a group of war poets, a feud within Emmett´s regiment, and a hidden love affair. Laurence is not convinced that Emmett had committed suicide and begins to suspect murder. Additionally more veterans are found dead and this seems to confirm that Emmett’s death was suspicious. Although gripping subject matter I did find the book unconvincing.

The Book Shop moved to its new, cleaner, brighter location just behind Pit Team Sur/The Golf Shop/Canarian Weekly and opposite Marrero Homes lovely new showroom, at the beginning of December, since which time it has since increased its total books held to more than 10,000. We offer a ‘Buy 2 Get One Free’ system and also have introduced a Book Swap – where, if we don’t already have the books you wish to sell, you may ‘swap’ from our 1,000+ Duplicates Section.

Most of the books reviewed this month I have really enjoyed but occasionally when I begin a book I feel ambivalent about whether I can continue reading. This month I have chosen to review three books that I found rather hard to finish. All of them had extremely good reviews but I have to admit I did not become engrossed in their content.

The Faithless by Martina Cole. Unfortunately I find Martina Cole´s books very similar as they all seem to focus upon abuse, violence and betrayal. The main character in The Faithless is Cynthia Taylor, a woman most people envy. She has a devoted husband, a lovely home and two gorgeous children. However Cynthia is incredibly unhappy as she never seems to be satisfied. She desires the best things in life and will do whatever she can to get them, even if it destroys other people. The casualties include her husband, Jimmy, who is too weak to defend himself; her sister Celeste, from whom Cynthia steals her most precious possession; and her

Mr. Fixer...

Dear Mr Fixer My Car recently broke down on the way to Adeje. I contacted a local garage to arrange collection of the vehicle and diagnostics. I was charged 50 € for a Grua to attend the vehicle. I paid the sum due but discovered that my insurance company would have covered the cost and I would not have had to pay. I don’t have a question for you, I just thought you might like to know. Regards Ian, Golf Del Sur Dear Ian, Thank you so much for your letter. Mr Fixer was aware that it is possible to have the cost covered by your insurance company, however having investigated further, I discovered that the vast majority of policies will cover the grua fee at no cost to the policyholder. I spoke with a friend

CANCER CHARITY GETS OFF TO A HEAD START Tenerife Cancer Charity, The Wig Exchange, had an amazing launch night party organised FREE of charge by Julie and Kerry at the Eurobar in Costa del Silencio. Entertainment was provided by a number of local acts, all of whom gave up their time free of charge. Orange Pages were at the event along with the Coast FM team, and a good time was had by all with a total of €531 raised - all of which will be donated to cancer charities. The Wig Exchange is a brand new charity which aims to recycle wigs for people who no longer need them. They will then be cleaned and rented for a nominal sum to other people undergoing treatment leading to hair loss. Charity founder, Sandi Ambler, who herself has been through chemotherapy, said “When I lost my hair, I needed more than one wig and they can cost up to €200. It can be a huge expense at a very emotional and difficult time.” The concept of The Wig Exchange was the brainchild of Sandi’s husband, John, who sadly passed away last year. She said “John always encouraged me to do it and I know he would be proud of me”. Sandi would like

to thank all of the artistes who gave up their time for free as well as all of the people who attended the event. If you have a venue suitable for displaying wigs please contact Sandi on her Facebook page below. If you would like to make a donation, or have a wig that you no longer need, or perhaps are interested in using the service, please visit www.facebook. com/ SupportLocalCharities.
