Board of Directors

This season, we experienced one artistic triumph after another, opening with a celebratory concert performance of Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, an opera that had never been performed at Opera Colorado. The mainstage season kicked off with a beautiful, classic production of Verdi’s Rigoletto. Audiences were surprised and captivated by Erich Korngold’s rarely performed masterpiece Die tote Stadt (The Dead City), in a new, opulent production designed especially for Opera Colorado. We rounded out the anniversary season with a completely soldout production of Puccini’s grandest opera, Turandot. We saw several debuts by world-class artists, including soprano Sharleen Joynt, mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Bishop, tenors Martin Bakari and Joshua Dennis, baritones Stephen Powell and Craig Verm, and bass-baritones Young Bok Kim and Christian Zaremba.

We concluded our 40th Anniversary Season with a spectacular, glittering gala featuring the radiant mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and collaborative pianist Craig Terry in a private concert for over 500 gala guests. Co-Chairs Joy and Chris Dinsdale led an incredibly hardworking and creative committee, making the 40th Anniversary Gala one of the most successful in the company’s history.

This year, our education and community engagement programs brought live opera performances to students of all ages in fifteen counties throughout the state. Delivered by the talented members of our Artist in Residence Program, these activities are an important service to the community and an investment in building audiences for the future, helping to attract over 2,200 new ticket-buying households this season.

Here’s to another forty years of grand opera in Denver!

Behind the scenes, we made a major investment of time and talent in our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts. Our

The two years following the COVID-19 pandemic have presented many challenges. However, Opera Colorado has been blessed with loyal and generous patrons, a dedicated and enthusiastic board, and a passionate and talented staff. We gratefully acknowledge that our resilience is fueled by all of those who support us with their time, talent, and financial resources.

Sincerely, Greg Carpenter The Ellie Caulkins General & Artistic Director

INSIDE OC KICK-OFF Inside OC, our subscriber group for arts-loving young folks (ages 21-45), kicked off the 40th Anniversary Season in style with an event on stage at the Ellie in October of 2022. With a drink in hand, about sixty participants sat among the sets for Rigoletto and enjoyed a performance by our Artists in Residence led by Cherity Koepke, Director of Education & Community Engagement and Director of the Artist in Residence Program. After the performance, some guests mingled while others toured the backstage of the Ellie to learn about its history and resident ghosts. 2022-23 Artists in Residence Joanne Evans and Oleg Bellini perform on stage.

A one-night-only, semi-staged performance of Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana on September 10, 2022 was a celebratory start to our 40th Anniversary Season. This short but dramatic tale, directed by David Lefkowich, tells the story of multiple love triangles between the humble Santuzza (mezzo-soprano Catherine Martin), the reckless Turiddu (tenor John Pickle), the enticing Lola (mezzo-soprano Kira Dills-DeSurra), and the confident Alfio (baritone Malcolm MacKenzie). The Opera Colorado Orchestra and Chorus, under the baton of Music Director Ari Pelto, took center stage to perform for the evening, enchanting audiences with dazzling music including the famous “Intermezzo.” Santuzza (mezzo-soprano Catherine Marin) performs on stage with the Opera Colorado Orchestra. ROMEO & JULIET In the winter of 2023, a new, abridged production of Romeo & Juliet was added to the repertoire of the Opera on Tour program. The original Shakespearean text was combined with Charles Gounod’s French opera Roméo et Juliette for a modern adaptation, brought to life by the 202223 Opera Colorado Artists in Residence. While the classic story is told primarily in English, elements of French were also incorporated. Cherity Koepke spearheaded the creation of the new sets and costumes, executed by Bruce Bergner, Ron Mueller, and Annika Radovcich from the University of Colorado at Boulder. 2022-23 Artists in Residence Francesca Mehrotra and David Soto Zambrana

Opera Colorado opened its mainstage season in November of 2022 with a classic production of Verdi’s Rigoletto. The jaded jester Rigoletto (baritone Stephen Powell) protects his naïve daughter Gilda (soprano Sharleen Joynt) at all costs and swears vengeance against the Duke of Mantua (tenor Joshua Dennis) for taking advantage of her. This tale of revenge includes some of opera’s most iconic and well-known arias, including “La donna è mobile.” Under the direction of director Christopher Mattaliano, with costumes provided by Sarasota Opera Association, Inc. and sets designed by Lawrence Shafer and provided by the New Orleans Opera Association, Rigoletto was a hit! Rigoletto (baritone Stephen Powell) and Gilda (soprano Sharleen Joynt) support each other in a heartbreaking scene from act two where father and daughter are reunited. AMERICAN SONG American Song, which has provided our audience with an opportunity to experience unique works by American composers, returned for its ninth year. This expertly-curated program featured art songs, musical theatre, and opera selections, organized around the theme of “time,” honoring Opera Colorado’s 40th Anniversary Season. Songs from Opera Colorado’s history and a few other surprises along the way brought in the largest audience for this event to date! The 2022-23 Artists in Residence gave wonderful performances to audiences at JCC’s Elaine Wolf Theatre, followed by a post-show reception where patrons mingled with the artists.

DIE TOTE STADT (THE DEAD CITY) A true operatic gem came to the Ellie in February and March of 2023 with Erich Korngold’s rarely-performed Die tote Stadt (The Dead City). This brand-new production featured gorgeous new sets and costumes designed by Robert Perdziola, including a rotating tower and dozens of original paintings. Directed by Chas Rader-Shieber, the production follows Paul (tenor Jonathan Burton) through a haunting psychological drama of love and loss. Audiences were enchanted by the cinematic music like Fritz’s (baritone Daniel Belcher) sweet aria “Mein Sehnen, mein Wähnen.” Sara Gartland acted the role of Marie/Marietta while Kara Shay Thomson lent her soprano voice. Marietta (soprano Sara Gartland) performs for her troupe of friends and artists in act two of Die tote Stadt while Paul (tenor Jonathan Burton) looks on in horror at the artists’ bohemian lifestyle. SIP & SING Our popular Sip & Sing event was back this year at Nocturne Jazz & Supper Club in March of 2023. This night of cabaret-inspired music delighted audiences, accompanied by a journey around Cuba, the USA, France, and Germany through food and wine pairings. The 2022-23 Artists in Residence gave a stellar performance of songs by the likes of Irving Berlin, Jake Heggie, Jason Robert Brown, and Jacques Offenbach. 2022-23 Artists in Residence Michael LeyteVidal and Oleg Bellini perform on stage at Nocturne.

Puccini’s blockbuster opera Turandot closed the season on a high note with four completely sold-out performances. Under the direction of the talented Aria Umezawa, this fantastical tale of riddles and courtship between Princess Turandot (soprano Kara Shay Thomson) and Calàf (tenor Jonathan Burton) shows love truly does conquer all. Audiences relished in this production with its incredible set from Lyric Opera of Chicago and colorful costumes from Santa Fe Opera. Burton delivered an amazing performance of the iconic tenor aria “Nessun dorma,” bringing the audience to its feet. Calàf (tenor Jonathan Burton) and Princess Turandot (soprano Kara Shay Thomson) share a moment in act three as love triumphs and thaws even the coldest of hearts. PHOTO OPERA COLORADO/MATT STAVER
