Grace Bascos

Erik Kabik

Robert John Kley

We tapped dining and music expert Grace Bascos to get the skinny on the Strip’s first true boutique hotel, The Cromwell. Naturally, she gravitated to the nightclub scene, more specifically Drai’s After Hours. “The music, like the space, is underground and unlike anything else on the Strip. This is the home of my people.” We also sent her tequila tasting to which she replied, “A night out with tequila always results in tequila stealing my phone and texting people I have sworn to never text again,” she jokes.

Photographer Erik Kabik captured some of the first images of The Cromwell and was immediately impressed. “The resort brings a classic Vegas sensibility back to the Strip in a totally modern and hip way.” Erik’s nights are often spent with his camera aimed at the acts performing at Brooklyn Bowl. The venue not only has the “best sight lines in town,” he says, but they’re “bringing talent to Vegas that we have not seen before. They’re expanding the palette of entertainment offered on the Strip.”

The big wheel keeps on turning (at one rotation every half hour)— and that was the challenge for Robert John Kley and our crew, on the High Roller set for our “Futurama” photo session. “We had to time the shots perfectly because we only had a few minutes to get each image, unless we wanted to go around again,” Robert explains. He also had the opportunity to photograph Olivia Newton-John for our cover. “She was one of the nicest people to work with: patient, kind and very beautiful.”

Christie Moeller

Sabin Orr

Krystle Randall

The idea to go extraterrestrial on the High Roller came about when Christie Moeller and photographer Robert John Kley scouted the circular pods. “We loved the spaceage feel of the graphics on the screens in the High Roller, and we’re both huge science fiction fans, so we thought, ‘Why not let our inner sci-fi geeks out!’” Christie describes the look as “fashion from a not-too-distant future, focusing on unconventional fabrics, textures and silhouettes.”

One of the first things to catch Sabin Orr’s eye when he stepped into Chayo Mexican Kitchen + Tequila Bar was the restaurant’s back wall decorated with sugar skulls. “The focus is all about the drink itself, but ultimately, it’s about creating an image that’s cool and visually appealing to look at,” Sabin explains. “I wanted to give a feel for the venue as well, and the vibrant colors of the skulls on the wall helped provide an interesting depth of field.”

What will women of the future look like? That was the task we set for hair and makeup artist Krystle Randall. “I matched the hair and makeup to the intensity of the outfit. Some outfits were simple, and some were more complex.” This led Krystle to give our models a natural fresh-faced, innocent look. “It was nothing over-the-top, but we did bring a bit of edginess to our version of the futuristic woman.”

oN THE sTrIp’s HoTTEsT NEw ATTrAcTIoNs We all know the High roller is the eye candy of The LINQ, but there are a whole lot of other tasty morsels and unique boutiques along the 1,250-foot stroll from Las Vegas Boulevard to the world’s tallest observation wheel. With close to a dozen restaurants, several bars and shops galore— specializing in everything from stylish eyewear and hats to running shoes and novelty items—there is something for everyone. Vegas Player caught up with Jon Gray, The LINQ’s vice president and general manager, to get an insider’s take on the transformation of the Center strip. 14

The best part of the High Roller is… Taking in the best views of Las Vegas from 550 feet up in the air. Brooklyn Bowl is an experience that plays on all five senses. Explain the concept. I tell people that Brooklyn Bowl isn’t a bowling alley; it’s a rock and roll club that happens to have bowling lanes available for VIPs. Brooklyn Bowl has some of the coolest live music, with artists that you won’t find anywhere else in Las Vegas. Even when there’s not a show, it’s a great place to hang out and try craft beers and amazing food. What is F.A.M.E.? Inspired by the Asian Night Markets, it stands for Food. Art. Music. Entertainment. On the lower level, a culinary bazaar features great street foods of Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, China and Vietnam on a menu serving dim sum, stir-fry, ramen, barbecue, crêpes and more. A stationary food truck offers fusion fare and will host various vendors, beginning with Fukuburger—a wildly popular Las Vegas truck that serves all-American burgers with a Japanese twist. In addition to the various dining options, a vast selection of Asian microbrews will be available in bottles and on tap. Live Asian-inspired entertainment, such as tiger and dragon dances and taiko drum performances, along with Gangnam-style beats—will keep the market festive. The upper level will host Fōchun, serving a hybrid of innovative Asian cuisine by celebrated chef Bryan Emperor.

Between bites—there are plenty of boutiques to explore. What are some unique finds? There are some cool souvenirs at The LINQ. It’s hard to leave empty-handed. Kitson features some neat Vegasinspired items. One of my favorites is a Cat Studio hand-embroidered Las Vegas pillow. If you’re looking for a personalized souvenir, check out the Polaroid Fotobar where you can turn your favorite photos from your phone, Instagram or Facebook accounts into classic Polaroids or other great art pieces. Any insider tips on how someone can get the most out of spending a day at The LINQ? Come ready to explore! I really encourage people to visit several shops, restaurants and bars. Also, if you need help planning your visit, we have the best concierge team in Las Vegas, located right next to Brooklyn Bowl. They can help you plan a great experience. Co m i n g s o o n ! Renovations are underway to transform the current Quad Resort & Casino into The LINQ Hotel & Casino. The remodeled property, with 2,256 renovated rooms, new retail and spa amenities and a refreshed pool deck, will welcome its first guests on Oct. 30. thelinq.com

With a Touch of French Flair, The Cromwell Makes Boutique Unique by Grace bascos

The Las Vegas skyline is constantly evolving, but this time it’s not a mega-resort that is changing the face of the Strip. Following a $185-million renovation, The Cromwell revealed itself as a sexy, sophisticated hotel-casino with Parisian influences, hot new nightlife options and a first-ever restaurant from Giada De Laurentiis. It’s a whole new way to look at Las Vegas.

Built on the footprint of Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall, The Cromwell is the Strip’s first stand-alone boutique hotel. The 188 rooms, including 19 suites, use the intimate space well, setting the bathrooms in the back, rather than near the door, to create a larger feel. Dark woods, plush upholstered wall panels and marble tile components add texture to the beautifully appointed suites, which range from a 723-square-foot one-bedroom Parlour Suite to the 2,550-square-foot, six-bedroom Cromwell Suite.

Parisian Style Everyday Italian

Rooms at The Cromwell are all styled to resemble a Parisian loft apartment. The residential feel starts underfoot with playful English-French phrases printed on the hallway carpets. In the rooms, distressed hardwood floors and vintage luggage and trunk-style furnishings anchor the space, while custom photographs by Deborah Anderson play to a more sensual side.

Giada De Laurentiis’ first restaurant, Giada, occupies the hotel’s second floor and has per fect panoramic views of the Bellagio fountains across the street. In creating the space, De Laurentiis wanted it to feel as if you were coming over to her home for a dinner party. Her handson approach ensures her style of California I talian cuisine translates to the plate, but her touch is also evident in the design—from the welcoming bread oven and antipasto counter near the door to the monogrammed “G” on the chair back.

The Cromwell’s suites, some featuring Strip views, are equipped with full-size refrigerators and wet bars that can be stocked upon request.

Raise the Roof

Mixology Maestro

Drai’s has been synonymous with Las Vegas nightlife for nearly two decades, thanks to his infamous Drai’s Afterhours, which operated in the basement of Bill’s until late last year. His new 65,000-square-foot Drai’s Beach Club • Nightclub elevates the party. “I always imagined how amazing a rooftop nightclub would be in Las Vegas,” Victor Drai says. “ To see my vision come alive in such a spectacular manner is a dream come true.” If underground is more your scene, have no fear, as Drai’s returns after hours downstairs at The Cromwell. “I’m not going to change the feel—I’m just going to make it better.”

When it comes to creating cocktails, world-renowned mixologist Salvatore Calabrese leads the pack. Known as “ The Maestro,” Calabrese has crossed the pond, bringing his custom shakers, glassware and coveted recipes from London to The Cromwell’s swanky new bar, Bound by Salvatore. He credits the creation of his iconic Breakfast Martini to his wife, who once served him toast with marmalade for a morning meal. Calabrese then took the jar to work and—presto—a star beverage was born. “A great cocktail has to satisfy three elements: eyes, nose and mouth. It has to look great. It has to smell divine and taste incredible.”

Ornate, red chandeliers hang over the casino floor, adding a classic, opulent reminder of the building’s history.

Bobby Flay was one of the first celebrity chefs to dive into Las Vegas when he opened the doors of Mesa Grill in 2004. From day one, crowds have packed the vibrant David Rockwell-designed restaurant at Caesars Palace to enjoy his tonguetingling signature dishes including his New Mexican spice-rubbed pork tenderloin (above) served with a bourbon glaze, ancho-chile sauce and sweet-potato tamale with pecan butter. 3 ChoW doWn Rumored to be eyeing Las Vegas for years, MR CHOW has found a home. “After many years of hard work, at last, we are happy to announce that we found our perfect match in Caesars Palace,” Michael Chow recently announced. The restaurant’s seventh location, which will overlook the resort’s Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis from a second-floor balcony, is expected to open in early 2015. The menu will feature his beloved dishes, including hand-pulled noodles, chicken satay and his famed Beijing duck.

He’s premiered Liaison, the first LGBT club on the Las Vegas Strip, which he sees as part of the next evolution of the party scene here. “I didn’t want to create just another club; I wanted to do something different and distinctive. It’s the right time for a beautiful gay nightclub in the middle of the action.” The nightlife pioneer once again knows what direction the party is headed, and is prepared to stay ahead of it again. “That has always been my goal—from After Hours to the new Drai’s at The Cromwell: to create the next frontier.” —Grace Bascos

5 Strip-Side Street Market A new shopping experience is coming to Las Vegas this fall. The Grand Bazaar Shops, located at the entrance to Bally’s Las Vegas, will bring an open-air, urban shopping scene to the Strip. “The inspiration came from the great markets of the world—the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Portobello Road and Camden Markets in London and the fantastic night markets in Asia,” explains developer and Juno Property Group chairman Larry Siegel. Anchored by Swarovski, some of the 150 tenants include Swatch, Superdry, Bettie Page, LUSH Cosmetics and five eateries from chef Sam Marvin. grandbazaarshops.com

Get Your StrandS in order

by ChristiE MoEllEr PhotoGrAPhs by robErt john klEy Colorist to the stars Michael Boychuck gives hair-raising inspiration for keeping your locks looking fashion forward year-round.

For Seasonal Change: “Change your look by gradually adding strands of lightness such as caramels, browns and auburns. You don’t have to do it all at once. Add different pieces through the hair to give your look an overall lightness.” For Your Cut: “I can’t get enough of airy unstructured hair in mid-length like Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory) and shorter cuts like Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1). They give off a laid-back, casualchic kind of vibe.”

Ashley Greene

Holly Madison

For Summer Color: “Ashley Greene (Twilight) has a beautiful blonde shade right now that is right on trend. Margot Robbie ( The Wolf of Wall Street) is showing off the right way to wear a lighter side of blonde; and Las Vegas’ own Holly Madison is showing the whole nation how good red looks (she got it done right here at COLOR Salon). People are going up and down with their colors right now. Ombre is still going strong but is just a bit softer than previous seasons. A little more blended, a little more natural looking, but still distinctive.”

Las Vegas PLays a starring roLe in the Dance MusicaL, Step Up All In

The glitter and glamour of Las Vegas provides the backdrop for Step Up All In, the latest in one of the most popular series of dance movies in Hollywood history. Crowd-pleasing young stars from the previous Step Up films unite to tear up Las Vegas with spectacular moves at an array of iconic landmarks, from the fountains at Caesars Palace to the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas. But why Vegas? Producer Jennifer Gibgot, who with her brother Adam Shankman, created Step Up, says. “It’s a playground, a place where you go and just let loose.” Filming [in Vegas] was like one big party.” “Vegas is one of a kind,” adds director Trish Sie. “It’s a mecca for entertainment and has great restaurants. It’s a place where everything is happening.” Step Up All In centers on stars Ryan Guzman and Briana Evigan, who play dancers betting their future on winning a fight-tothe-finish TV dance competition. Shankman, who began his own very successful Hollywood career as a dancer, says, “It mirrors the hopes and dreams of wanna-be dancers, both personally and as the characters they play. Vegas is a place where people come to make dreams come true. It can be your start to stardom.” Step Up All In is driven by the dazzling dancing and breathtaking choreography. The locations for these showstopping routines include the statues and fountains in front of Caesars Palace, and at the Neon Boneyard, an outdoor museum where classic signs from Sin City’s past are displayed. “There was very little the stars didn’t do themselves, unless it was something dangerous,” Sie says. “They were up for it— and that’s what makes it so exciting.” “Our goal was to make people happy and have them dancing out of the theater,” Gibgot adds. “That’s exactly what the crowd of onlookers was doing when we filmed a scene. They were dancing down the Strip. It was like Vegas was busting a move.” Above: Moose (Adam Sevani) dances on the bar at Seahorse Lounge in Caesars Palace; Monster (Luis Rosado) shows off his dance skills outside Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

From classy (he’s stitched many red-carpet looks) to quirky— he designed Katy Perry’s cupcake bra for her “California Gurls” video and nicki Minaj’s stuffed-animal dress for “Fireball”— Marco Marco is known for his eye-catching fashions. Britney Spears’ looks in Las Vegas are no exception.

From the moment she burst on the scene in a schoolgirl uniform for her “…Baby One More Time” video to her 2000 MTV Video Music Awards performance in a rhinestone-bedazzled nude bodysuit, Britney Spears has been making memorable fashion statements. Her “Britney: Piece of Me” residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino offers more of the same.

VEGAS PlAyEr m agazin e

The costume journey begins with design. With the help of Marco Marco—one of Hollywood’s hottest young designers—Spears goes back to the closet not only to resurrect some of her favorites, but to bring new looks to the show. Marco Marco, who even gives Spears angel wings, talks about creating her outfits. Britney Spears has had so many iconic fashion moments in her career. Was it difficult to create something new, yet equally bold? There are two sides to that. It was hard to think of something fresh for a show that was really supposed to be a journey through those iconic moments. On the other hand, it’s Britney Spears; anything she wears becomes iconic. How many costumes did you create for the show? There are seven looks she wears during the show, which can change, because we have multiple versions of each costume with slight variations. I created 40 costumes total—some you may see in the future. Just because she isn’t wearing them right now doesn’t mean they won’t be rotated in at a later date. You got your start in prop design. Does this give you a leg up over other costume designers? My designs tend to be sculptural. I don’t always think about fabric like most other designers. I think about clothing the body in alternative ways.

Once the costumes are complete, they are handed over to Tish Yates, the show’s head of wardrobe, who is in charge of maintaining, repairing and keeping them in stellar shape throughout Spears’ residency.

head of wardrobe Tish YaTes

Britney has several costume changes. How does that influence design? To get her into a costume, my top requirements are that it is comfortable and easy to put on. Then, on the flip side, is it going to last and be easy to repair? We use high-quality spandex that isn’t as opaque as we would like, but offers durability. What is a typical show day like for you? It’s fun. I normally come in around 3 p.m. We wash all the clothing the night before, right after the show, so I start by putting all of the costumes on mannequins and begin replacing rhinestones, fixing any rips or tears, and inspecting every zipper. Every single stitch gets looked over. Then it all gets put back on the rack and is lined up for the show. Each costume must look perfect, so that the show you watch is as fresh as if it were her first show. The show sparkles. How many rhinestones do you estimate are used? A good half million have gone through here.

In a nonreactive saucepan, stir together the vinegar, orange juice, lemon juice, lemon zest, marmalade, ginger, garlic, chile pepper (if you’d like a spicier flavor), white pepper, and salt to taste. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat; reduce the heat slightly and continue boiling until the mixture has reduced to about ½ cup, 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool. Whisk the oil. Set aside 2 tablespoons of this glaze. Spoon the rest over the fish fillets and turn to coat the fillets in glaze. Cover again with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to cook.

PrePAre tHe dAIkon: Put the daikon pieces in a small nonreactive saucepan and add the stock, soy sauce and reserved 2 tablespoons citrus glaze. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer gently until the radish pieces are tender when probed with the tip of a sharp knife, about 20 minutes, turning them occasionally so they ’ll cook evenly and be evenly glazed as the liquid reduces.

Wolfgang Puck’s new cookbook, Wolfgang Puck Makes It Healthy, is available at Spago in The Forum Shops at Caesars or on amazon.com.

WHILe tHe dIAkon Is sImmerIng, BroIL tHe FIsH: Preheat the broiler. Transfer the fish fillets to a broiler pan or baking dish large enough to hold them in a single layer. Spoon the citrus glaze from the dish over them. Place under the broiler and cook until nicely browned and barely cooked through in the center, 3 to 4 mintues per side depending on thickness, turning them carefully with a spatula. While the fish is broiling, prepare the pea shoots. Place the pea shoots in a bowl and sprinkle them with the vinegar, salt, white pepper and sugar. Toss well. Set aside.

AssemBLe tHe dIsH: As soon as the fish is done, use a spoon to place 2 pieces of braised radish about 2 inches apart in the center of each heated serving plate, spooning all but a few spoonfuls of the braising liquid over them. With a spatula, place a fish fillet on top of each pair of radishes. Stir any glaze left in the broiler pan into the remaining braising liquid, and spoon that mixure over the fish. Mound the pea shoots on top. Serve immediately. serVes: 4 WoLFgAng HeALtHY tIP: notice how briefly boiling the marinade/glaze mixture concentrates its flavors, which in turn makes the mild, lean fish fillets deeply satisfying.

The crafTsmanship TTsmanship of Van Cleef & arpels

iNTERviEwED BY cHRisTiE MOELLER iNTER how do you stay true to your brand legacy while ensuring success in the contemporary market? By creating pieces that express our special vision— a world of harmony, beauty and femininity. Van cleef is known for whimsical and fantastic pieces. what inspires a specific collection? Our most cherished sources of inspiration include nature, couture, literature and the arts. We interpret these through a poetic lens, enabling us to create collections that portray a special dreamlike vision of the world. how long does it take to design and create a piece? There is no set timeframe. For instance, it takes hours of hand craftsmanship to construct the perfect Perlée band with its delicate beadwork and lustrous polish. With High Jewelry, it can take years to produce unique creations. It depends on the complexity of the design, the rarity of the stones, and the skills necessary to bring the creation to life. tell us about the famous Mystery Setting. The iconic Mystery Setting was patented in 1933. It’s the perfect marriage of artistic design aesthetic and technical innovation. Perfectly cut and matched individual stones slide onto rose-gold tracks to create a seamless, velvety surface of rubies, emeralds or sapphires. It takes three to five hours to prepare each gemstone before it’s set, and the lapidary can spend hundreds or thousands of hours creating a single piece.

Zip Necklaces

When you mention iconic jewelry, one name immediately comes to mind: Van Cleef & Arpels. Born in Paris’ Place Vendôme in 1906, Van Cleef & Arpels’ artistic style and quality craftsmanship have become the worldwide reference for High Jewelry Maisons. Offering jewels and timepieces that tell stories and bring enchantment to life, these collections— whether inspired by nature, couture or the imagination— evoke a timeless world of harmony and beauty. Perlée Bands

Here, Alain Bernard, the company’s President & CEO of the Americas, talks to vegas Player.

your artisans are called golden hands. what training do they receive? Techniques are passed down from one generation to the next—from master to apprentice. Their ability to combine technical genius with artistic inspiration allows us to transform a one-dimensional gouache into a voluminous, wearable work of art. what is Van cleef ’s most iconic piece? My favorite is the Zip necklace—first suggested in 1938 by the Duchess of Windsor, who wanted to fashion a piece of jewelry out of a zipper. It took until 1951 to develop this technology. This piece is a perfect example of Van Cleef ’s dedication to transformability, as it can be converted into a bracelet. who is the standard Van cleef client? People who value timeless design and expert craftsmanship, and appreciate our majestic, feminine vision of the world.

“Depending on the complexity of the design, it can take years to produce unique creations.” —Alain Bernard

Flamingo Songstress Sings a Sweet Tune

Bird’s-Eye View In her distinguished career, Olivia Newton-John has won four Grammy Awards, amassed ten No. 1 hits and sold more than 100 million albums. Yet, despite all her stage success, the Australian singer is perhaps best known for her portrayal of good-girl-gone-bad Sandy in the movie Grease—a role that almost never happened.

it was by chance that olivia Newton-John met producer Allan carr. she was attending a dinner party at the home of Helen reddy when the two encountered each other. At the time, carr was working on the film adaptation of Grease. “He thought i was funny and asked me to audition,” Newton-John recalls. “i was nervous about it because they were looking for someone with an American accent, and i didn’t think i could do one,” the Australian-raised singer admits. “i was also 29 and worried about playing a high-school teenager, so i asked to do a screen test and it worked out, thank goodness.” Newton-John was already a successful singer with several No. 1 singles and Grammy Awards prior to the release of Grease in 1978, but the film, which starred John travolta as her love interest, Danny, became a box-office smash, propelling her to superstardom. “i had a number of highlights in my career prior to Grease. i felt good when i got on my first television show in Australia,” she says with a laugh. “i guess Grease was the one that pushed it over the top. i already had successful records and milestones in my life, but that really took it to a different level. “[Grease] was successful on Broadway and around the world even before the movie, so we knew we had a great story to tell,” she continues. “there was just magic in that movie that is hard to reproduce.”

With Chippendales dressed as T-Birds, and Jubilee showgirls dressed as Pink Ladies, Olivia Newton-John made a grand entrance in the same 1949 Mercury “Hell’s Chariot” convertible that was featured in the movie Grease. “It was a fun moment,” the singer said afterward of the arrival celebration in Las Vegas.

“I already had the icing on the cake. This residency is the candle on the icing of that cake.” —Olivia Newton-John road to stardom For Newton-John, the magic began when her family moved from england to Melbourne, Australia, when she was six years old. it was there where she found her voice and discovered her knack for entertaining. “As a little girl, i would always sing along to the radio,” she says. “it was just fun. i never set out to become an entertainer. it just happened. i guess it was my destiny.” Newton-John’s first big hit, “if Not for You,” came at the urging of her manager and producer, who thought the song, written by Bob Dylan and previously recorded by George Harrison, suited her voice. she wasn’t so sure, yet it rose to the top of the charts. “At the time, i didn’t really like the song,” she admits, “but i’ve grown to really love it, and it’s actually my husband’s favorite song. But when i recorded it, i just wanted to sing big ballads. “My roots, from the very beginning, were in folk music,” she continues. “When i started singing, folk music was the big thing and i loved it. it was my manager who took me the country route. i was really just recording songs that fit my voice.” And once again, her manager was steering her career down a golden road. However, there were many who felt a blonde, green-eyed foreigner didn’t belong in the “country club” and greeted her early success in country music with disdain. shrugging it off, Newton-John continued to sing what best fit her voice, and in 1974, was named country Music Association’s Female vocalist of the Year. soon thereafter, she left London and moved to the United states.

In 1992, Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her personal triumph led her to create the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre (ONJCWC) in her hometown of Melbourne. Opened in 2012, the center provides a comprehensive range of services and programs. “I had to find other wellness programs to go along with the treatments I was having,” Newton-John says. “When I was asked to put my name on this cancer center, it was really important to me that they have a wellness program to support the patient when they’re going through it. I’m very grateful and fortunate to be healthy. I would like to raise awareness that you can beat cancer; you can survive it.” A portion of every ticket sold to her Flamingo shows benefits the ONJCWC.

Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta have remained close friends since starring in Grease. They’re particularly proud that, after all these years, they still have two of the top-selling duets of all time in “Summer Nights” and “You’re the One That I Want.”

Now, Newton-John is in the midst of her “summer Nights” residency at Flamingo Las vegas. When she takes the stage these days, it’s a trip down memory lane. “the show is a journey through the life of my music,” she explains. “i don’t have dancers and it’s not a big production. it’s really about the music. it’s not all the songs that i’ve done, but it’s the ones most people know.” For a solid 90 minutes, Newton-John commands the stage as she performs some of her early country and pop hits. she later weaves in a trio of songs from Xanadu (the title track, “Magic” and “suddenly”), plus four songs from Grease, as clips from the films play on a video screen behind her. Newton-John also displays a playful side during her rendition of “Physical,” showing her original Grammy Award-winning video from 1981, remixed with an updated version from a recent episode of Glee, featuring Newton-John and actress Jane Lynch. “i thought it would be fun to put the new version in,” Newton-John explains. “they copied the original exactly.” For Newton-John, returning to perform in Las vegas has been exciting. “the best part of Las vegas is being on a familiar stage every night,” she says. “You know what’s going to happen. You’re sleeping in the same bed. it’s really enjoyable. it's like doing a theater run. “A lot of vegas shows are more theater-orientated. Big rooms are a lot less personal,” she continues. “it’s hard to settle in a booth and have a drink like we used to do in the old days when i’d go see sinatra and sammy Davis, Jr. i enjoy a cozy room, and the Flamingo is a much more intimate environment.” offstage, Newton-John, is exploring the city. she’s taken a ride on the High roller at the LiNQ, is testing out the city’s surplus of restaurants, and her husband, John easterling, has even made the leap off the stratosphere. “You wouldn’t catch me doing that,” she says of the skyJump thrill ride—a controlled bungee descent from the tower’s 108th floor. More likely, she admits, you’ll find her perusing the boutiques at the Forum shops at caesars. “the shopping is so convenient. they have just about everything i could want there,” she says with a bit of a laugh. “vegas has so much more to offer now. When i first started coming here, there was just gambling, drinking and a couple of shows. there is so much to do now. in the old days, you’d just go to the pool.” it didn't take her long to get back in the swing of being in Las vegas. “i was flattered to be invited here,” she says. “i’m having a blast.” FiLMogr aphy FuNNy ThiNgS hAppEN DOWN uNDER (1965) • TOOMORROW (1970) gREASE (1978) • XANADu (1980) • T WO OF A KiND (1983) • A MOM FOR ChRiSTMAS (T V) 1 9 9 0 • A C h R i S T M A S R O M A N C E ( T V ) 1 9 9 4 • i T ’ S M y pA R T y ( 1 9 9 6 ) • S O R D i D L i V E S ( 2 0 0 0 ) • ThE WiLDE giRLS (T V) (2001) • SCORE: A hOCKEy MuSiCAL (2010) • A FE W BEST MEN (2011) VEGAS PlAyEr m a g a z i ne

“I’m so proud of David. FIZZ was his brainchild and everything looks amazing. It’s the sort of place that Vegas needed.” —Elton John

Triple ThreaT Elton John’s return to his Caesars Palace residency coincided with his 67th birthday and an all-star bash at the grand opening of his champagne lounge FIZZ.

“Another birthday whizzes by. Sooner or later, it will be 70, but who cares,” Elton John told the grand-opening crowd.

Elton John and his civil partner, David Furnish, are famous for throwing big, high-profile parties. Now Las Vegas is getting a taste of these celebrity celebrations at FIZZ—a chic champagne lounge inside Caesars Palace. “Everything in Vegas is getting bigger, but it’s hard to feel special in a place like that,” explains Furnish. “When people go out, they want to feel special, so I thought if everyone is going bigger, let’s go smaller. My whole vision of FIZZ is I wanted it to be a treat in someone’s day. People come to Vegas to escape, to have fun and to treat themselves. I want them to feel like they’re escaping, like they’re walking into an oasis when they enter FIZZ.” Sandwiched between The Forum Shops at Caesars and The Colosseum, FIZZ serves up a selection of vintage and rare champagnes, carefully curated spirits, and a menu consisting of caviar, 132

“Champagne is a wonderful metaphor for life,” explains Furnish. “It’s always associated with special occasions. It’s representative of the effervescence of life, the joy of life and good times. That’s what FIZZ is about.”

charcuterie and small bites. Elton John fans will find champagne cocktails bearing the names of his songs, such as “Mexican Vacation,” “Jamaica Jerk-Off ” and “Kiss the Bride.” The lavish 2,750-square-foot, two-story lounge is dressed in warm hues of champagne, cognac, copper and ivory. Gracing the walls are stunning works of art by photographers David LaChapelle, David Bailey, Denise de la Rue, Kudzanai Chiurai and Edward Burtynsky. “Because Vegas is a colorful place, color photography was a natural choice, and because the room has such high ceilings, the images are large,” says Furnish. “Contemporary art always looks brilliant in a space where you can show it off; when you can give it air and let it breathe.” For reservaTions: Fizzlv.com or call (702) 776-3200.
