FROM THE

2015 President Good Timing to Grow Membership

Mike Auderer PRESIDENT

G

ood news! All the statistics are slating 2015 to be a better year for the housing industry! Consumer confidence is slowly coming back. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) is predicting a 29.3% increase in new home sales and a 3% gain in residential remodeling. I like it when I talk with other industry people and they are actually seeing these improvements locally. I’m stoked! Here at Olympia Master Builders (OMB) we need to take advantage of the upward trend and use it to grow our membership so we can continue providing benefits to industry professionals. Last month I touched on a few of the reasons why I am a member. This month I am going to go into more depth. I also encourage you to check out page 8-9 and read what other OMB members

ost of you are probably very familiar with what OMB does for builders and the business community in your local city or county. In addition to our great slate of events, networking opportunities and education classes, OMB staff is hard at work representing your public policy interests in the five-county area we serve. Whether it’s fighting the proliferation of impact fees, monitoring local government updates to comprehensive plans and shoreline master programs, or keeping you informed on the latest developments in your local building department, OMB has you covered. All of these decisions made at the local level have a direct impact on the success of your business. I’ve often said, government is the business partner you never asked for but can’t get rid of. You are all very busy running your businesses and taking care of your families – who has time to go to city council meetings or county planning commission public hearings? Luckily, when you become a member of OMB we monitor all of that for you. And when an issue comes up where

Q & A With Olympia’s Building Official Todd Cunningham Where did you grow up? I was born in Petaluma California and grew up in Santa Rosa California a city about 50 miles north of San Francisco.

How long have you been working in the building industry? It’s been around 38 years overall in various capacities of which 23 years has been in the building and safety industry involved with all aspects of the programs we oversee. I’ve worked in California, Oregon and Washington serving the building and safety industry.

What other roles in the building industry have you played?

understanding the industry from many avenues. I’ve been a Code Enforcement officer for many years in my own business where I have acted as an expert witness for substandard housing conditions; something I still do today.

What do you like to do for fun? I currently enjoy reading and spending time with my family exploring the sights around Washington and Oregon. My wife and I have fours sons, two still at home and our first grandson was recently born; we love watching him grow. I enjoy visiting the mountains with our family and discovering high lakes to camp and fish; I enjoy kayak fishing and the quiet time it offers on a sunny day. I also enjoy welding and sharing time with my sons constructing goofy things out of junk metal or just spending time at home with my wife around a nice campfire.

I began working in the building industry during the summer in high school as part of a network of family and friends that were Contractors including my father and grandfather; mostly in the concrete and plumbing industries. owners about their ideas around our services including some of the Master Builders. This time next year I would like to see that the citizens, builders and business owners have developed a trusting relationship with me and build on the trust they already have for the team I serve here in the community development department. I want people to know that we are dedicated to their best interest in being a good partner. I would also like to create ways to make programs and services easier to understand and implement; sort of smoothing out some of the perceived wrinkles. Developing avenues of communication and listening is an important part of what we do; I would like to ensure we have a way to implement changes creating ways to make both sides pleased with the duty we have to each other by setting the example of excellent service.

What message would you like to share with the Olympia Master Builders’ members? That our team is dedicated and respectful of their needs; we understand how we fit into the process as their partner. I plan to listen and act upon their concerns and suggestions; and although I may not always be able to act completely on the exacting nature of their requests, I am always willing to explain why I make the decisions I do and the basis of our reasons for such decisions. I want to build an understanding and respectful long-term relationship that works for both sides. Chalk Line • 11

he Annual Remodeling Excellence (REX) Awards have been a part of Olympia Master Builders (OMB) for 14 years. The awards are designed to recognize outstanding projects completed by OMB members during the previous year. Any OMB member is welcome to enter the competition.

What’s there to gain by entering the REX competition? FREE publicity of your business and peer recognition of a job well done! The cost to enter a project in the REX award competition is $75 for the first entry and $50 for each additional entry. Entry deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2015. The entry form can be found at omb.org. If you have questions call the OMB office at 360-754-0912.

R.O.I.I.® Select: Eliminating Workplace Injuries   As a savvy business owner, you know the value of shopping around to get the best value for your buck. Workers’ compensation insurance isn’t any different. The idea of shopping around for workers’ compensation insurance may seem odd and completely foreign since nearly every employer in Washington state must purchase this insurance from the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I). However, Washington employers do have a choice of participating in an insurance group program L&I offers called Retrospective Rating, or “Retro.”   The idea behind Retro is simple: Eliminate workplace injuries through improvements in workplace safety. When an employee is injured, help them get better quicker and complete a successful return to work experience. Do this and you may be rewarded with lower premiums from an improved experience factor. Do this as a participant in a retro program, and you may earn a refund on your L&I premiums. As one of the oldest and largest retro groups in the state, the Building Industry Association of Washington’s (BIAW) Return On Industrial Insurance (R.O.I.I.®) program has returned over $400 million in retro refunds to construction-related companies that have participated since 1982.   Last year R.O.I.I.® Select earned the highest refund percentage of all construction-related retro programs (a whopping 45%), for the first adjustment of the 2012-13 plan year — the highest first adjustment refund in the R.O.I.I.® program’s 33-year history.   If you would like to talk more about joining the program, contact me, R.O.I.I.® Select Field Representative Mark Shaffer at (360) 352-7800, ext. 111 or by email at marks@biaw.com. You can also receive more information by completing and submitting the release form found at biaw.com.   There’s more to retro programs than refunds. I look forward to talking with you about making a switch and how you can make real change.   Regards,

Mark Shaffer
