1. A New Map of North America from the Latest Discoveries. Published in The London Magazine. Copperplate engraving, February, 1763. This map shows the colonial possessions in North America at the close of the French and Indian War. Noted are early settlements, forts, Indian villages and tribal territory. Various treaty and charter boundaries are shown. In North Carolina, “Earl Granville's Property” stretches from the Atlantic west to beyond the Mississippi River. Cartographically, this map is largely based on Dr. John Mitchell’s large-scale map of 1755. Image size 10 7/8 x 14 7/8". Good condition. Hand-colored. Jolly, P. 4 4. A New Map of the United States of America. J. H. Young. Published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. Philadelphia. Engraving with hand-color, 1850. This map is from A New Universal Atlas containing maps of the various Empires, Kingdoms, States and Republics of the World. It is one of the most interesting maps of the United States to appear in a commercial atlas, and one of the earliest to extend from coast to coast. This edition pre-dates the Gadsden Purchase and includes a large inset of the Gold Region of California. Washington and Oregon extend to the Rocky Mountains. Massive Utah and New Mexico Territories extend from California to the Rockies and beyond. Missouri Territory extends from the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains and the north fork of the Platte River to Canada, roughly equivalent to what would become Nebraska Territory in 1855. A massive Indian Territory takes on its early tomahawk configuration. Minnesota Territory includes all of Dakota. Exceptional detail in Texas and areas east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This edition of the map is one of the most interesting, during this extraordinary period of geo-political change in the west. Many early roads and explorer's routes are shown, along with Indian tribes and forts. Shows Fremont's route, Kearny's route, the Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail, General Arbuckle's route and many others. North America Index Map to Canada and the United States. Published by Baldwin & Cradock, 47 Paternoster Row under the supervision of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Engraving, hand-colored, Sept. 29, 1834. Engraved by J. & C. Walker. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, better known as SDUK, was an English enterprise devoted to spreading the most up to date cartographic information and enhancing geographical understanding and knowledge of the world. Over a period of years, the maps that the SDUK produced were issued by various publishers. The maps from this series are known for their fine engraving and attention to detail. Copperplate engraving, 1630. From the French edition of Atlas Sive Cosmographicae Meditationes by Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius. This is the scarcer, large-format edition of the Atlas Minor issued by Johann Cloppenburgh. Most of the maps were engraved by Pieter van den Keere. An early map of Tierra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan. Image size 7 3/8 x 10 1/8". Good condition save restored margin and neat line at right. Black and white. #47722.1 $385.

From John Melish's Travels in the United States of America in the Years 1806 & 1807, and 1809. 1810 & 1811. First edition. Engraved by Thackara. This map shows the Gulf Stream, prevailing winds, and the routes of several transatlantic voyages. Image size 8 5/8 x 10 5/8". 9. Plan of the City and Harbour of Havanna. Published London. Copperplate engraving, 1762. Subtitled “A Plan of the Siege of the Havana Drawn by an Officer. 15th August 1762.” This map depicts the successful British siege of Havana at the end of the French and Indian War. It locates ships in the harbor and offshore, the camps of General Elliott and Colonel How, a besieging encampment behind Morro Castle, and the city walls. Image size 6 7/8 x 7 1/4". 8. Cuba Insula et Jamaica. Cornelis van Wytfliet. Copperplate engraving, 1597 (1611). From Descriptionis Ptolemaicae Augmentum, Louvain. Wytfliet’s work was the earliest with maps devoted solely to the Americas. His Cuba map locates Havana and Matanzas, as well as other coastal and inland cities. Below, the map shows Jamaica and part of Hispaniola. A large title cartouche fills the lower ocean. Image size 9 x 11 3/8". Good condition save marginal repair. Black and white. Lowery 83. 10. L'Asia di N.Sanson d'Abbeville Geografo ordinario del Re. Nicolas Sanson. Published by Sebastiano Coleti, Venice. Copperplate engraving, 1725. A delightfully small map of Asia by the “father of French cartography, Nicolas Sanson. Image size 5 5/8 x 6 1/4". Good condition save re-margined on left. #63590.1 $225.

11. Het Gedeelte van Opper-Ethiopien. Waar in Leggen 't Ryk van Abissinien, en Nubien, enz. Nicolas Sanson. This map appeared in Allgemeene Weereld-Beschryving, published in Amsterdam, F. Halma, 1705. Copperplate engraving. A beautifully colored map focused on the fictitious Ptolemaic twin lakes of Zaire and Zaflan. Located at the foot of the mythical Lunae Montes, or Mountains of the Moon, often identified as the Ruwenzori Mountains in Uganda, the lakes were supposed to be the source of the Nile. This map has highly unusual deluxe coloring with gold leaf highlighting. It has been suggested by several experts that the coloring may well be the work of the Dutch master colorist Dirk Jansz. 12. T Koningryk en de Woestyne van Barca en Aegypten. Nicolas Sanson. Published in Amsterdam, F. Halma. Copperplate engraving, 1705. A beautifully colored map of the northern Africa coastline from Tripoli to the Red Sea by the French master cartographer, Nicholas Sanson. This state appeared in Allgemeene Weereld-Beschryving, published in Amsterdam by Halma. This map has highly unusual deluxe coloring with gold leaf highlighting. It has been suggested by several experts that the coloring may well be the work of the Dutch master colorist Dirk Jansz. Van Santen 1637-1708. Image size 6 5/8 x 10 7/8". Very good condition with marginal color smudge.. Beautiful original hand coloring. #67679.1 $375.

7 15. Venezuela cum parte Australi Novae Andalusiae. Arnoldus Montanus. Published by Jacob van Meurs, Amsterdam. Copperplate engraving, 1671. A fine map of Venezuela from Montanus' De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld: of Beschryving van America. The map shows the coastline of Venezuela from Nuestra Senora de los Remedios to the mouth of the Orinoco River. The Lesser Antilles is depicted in the upper section of the map, as is a large decorative cartouche showing Neptune and mermaids. Image size 11 3/8 x 14 1/4". Good condition save lower centerfold repair. #68028.1 $500. 16. Paraquaria Vulgo Paraguay Cum adjacentibus. Arnoldus Montanus. Published by Jacob van Meurs, Amsterdam. Copperplate engraving, 1671. A fine map of Paraguay from Montanus' De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld: of Beschryving van America. This map is based on Blaeu’s map of the same title, and extends from Rio de Janiero to the Rio de la Plata basin. The map includes Uruguay, Paraguay, part of northern Argentina, and northern Chili. It is highly detailed with a wealth of topographical detail and an ornate cartouche. Image size 11 3/8 x 14 1/4". Good condition save unobtrusive repaired 1" tear at lower left. #68029.1 $425. 17. Brasilia. Arnoldus Montanus. Published by Jacob van Meurs, Amsterdam. Copperplate engraving, 1671. A fine map of Brazil from Montanus' De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld: of Beschryving van America. Oriented with north to the right, this map shows Brazil from above the Amazon River south to the entrance to Rio de la Plata. It is adorned with a title cartouche incorporating European explorers and natives, plus a mileage cartouche enhanced with cherubs. Image size 11 3/8 x 14". Frederic Remington (1861-1909), noted illustrator, painter and sculptor of the American West, had a sketch first published in Harper's Weekly in 1882. In 1886, after briefly studying drawing at New York's Art Students League, Harper's commisioned Remington to travel to the southwest to visually record the army's search for the Apache chief Geronimo. For the next thirteen years, the artist supplied Harper's with various western subjects. He was also sent to Cuba to cover the Spanish-American War. Image size 8 3/4 x 13 1/2".
